The document outlines plans for a new hip hop magazine aimed at 16-18 year olds. It will be available in print and digitally. The target audience listens to 9+ hours of music per week and downloads from iTunes. The magazine will cover new artists, reviews, interviews and charts. It will have posters, competitions and cost £2 per issue to appeal to its target demographic of students and part-time workers earning around £20,000 annually. Sample covers and layouts are included to showcase the magazine's style.
2. Who its aimed at/Genre
The magazine will be a hip hop magazine aimed at young adults aged between
16 – 18 with the average reader being 17 years old.
The magazine will be a print based magazine which will be available to be
bought in shops all over the uk. Due to our generation using the internet to buy
music and rather than CD’s we use our phones or music devices to listen to
music. An electronic copy of the magazine will also be able to be bought on the
newsstand in the Itunes store which will make it appeal to not only the target
audience but a much wider audience to as it will be purchasable to those who
cant access it at stores. This will enable issues to be re read anywhere the
individual will go. The magazine will also have a Facebook page, Twitter feed
and Instagram page this will be great advertisement and will appeal and
engage the target audience.
3. KEY STATITISTICS:
The average age of the readers will be: 17 with the female
audience being 77.27% and the male audience: 22.73%.
The readers are interested in a hip hop genre. The average
readers are 55% working full time 45% part time and 79%
are students. The reader would be of any race as the
magazine has no prejudice and our society is multicultural.
The reader likes to download music using sites such as
iTunes, and listens to music for over 9 hours a week
therefore they are interested in the magazine to know
about upcoming music, tour dates and what’s ranked in the
charts.
The average reader is a C1 Earner and has an average
income of 20,000. Therefore they would be able to
purchase the magazine and it would be within price range
without affecting their bank account.
4. Cost and Publication pattern
The publication pattern will be monthly therefore the magazine
will be of a long length in order for the reader to be content to
last a month until the next issue. Also the magazine will have to
be of good quality so that the target audience will keep buying
it every month as one bad issue could drop sales permanently.
Using the audience research again the evidence from the target
audience shows they would spend £1.55-£2.00 on a magazine
therefore the cover price of the magazine will be £2.00. This
price was chosen because it is cheap enough for the target
audience to buy it and the price is just the right amount in
order to make a profit and not break even. The price is different
to other music magazine that have a more expensive price so
this suggests why the sales of music magazines have decreased.
5. Style and coverage of the magazine
The magazine will cover the latest trends of the hip-hop music genre
such as: the newest/upcoming artists, the upcoming songs and albums of
known artists, reviews of what was the best of the month and upcoming
music the reader should listen to and what to avoid. It will cover these
areas by interviews with upcoming artists/ already known artists. It will
also feature articles of album/songs, reviews on songs/ albums, it will
also have an article on the top 40 music of the month. Furthermore it will
have detachable posters for the younger generation to take out and use
or just to look at, we will also have mini competition and giveaways to
the first 100 people to promote upcoming artists.
The magazine will have an equal amount of pictures and text to appeal
to the target audience with the pictures and texts equally spread out i.e.
not cramped into one small page. The photos will compliment the text
and engage the reader and the colours used will be bold, attractive and
eye catching to make the page interesting and engaging for the target
audience.

These are some sketches I did of the front cover, to see which design/ arrangement of the
magazine will be most suited to the target audience. The second cover will be the cover of the
magazine as it has more going on, secondary images and looks more like a cover of hip hop
magazine.
