RESEARCH- EMPIRE
 Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer
Media of Hamburg based Bauer Media Group. From the first issue in July
1989, the magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap.
 It is the biggest selling film magazine in the United Kingdom and is also
published in the United States, Australia, Turkey, Russia, Italy and Portugal.
Empire organises the annual Empire Awards which were sponsored by Sony
Ericsson, and from 2009 sponsored by Jameson.[2] The awards are voted for
by readers of the magazine.
 THE EMPIRE READERSHIP is three-quarters male and aged 18-40,
employed, in a relationship (although not necessarily married), university
educated and time-poor. Empire’s audience is passionate about film — they
use cinema as escapism or insight into other worlds

EMPIRE- FRONT PAGE
The colour scheme for Empire
magazine is red, grey and white. The
red is bold and eye catching which
grabs the readers attention. Because
the image is dark, it stands out
against the all grey background.
Because there are no bright colours
on the front cover, it suggests that the
magazine is targeted at an older
audience.
The font is very big at the top
of the page as well as in the
middle. Empire have done this
so that the title stands out and
grabs the viewers attention.
The font is bold and simple
which connotes to the
magazine being targeted at an
older audience.
The image used is very dark as
the Joker is clothed in his iconic
purple suit with green hair.
Because the image is dark, it
stands out against the all grey
background.
There are several blobs and stars
on the cover. For example there
is a bubble with the Jokers name
as well as who plays him: Heath
Ledger. There is also a bubble
advertising what the magazine
has to offer; interviews and
photos.
There is little writing on the front cover
therefore it is difficult to tell what the
writing style/ language is. However,
from the writing on the cover, it seems
that the writing language is formal. This
suggests that the magazine style is
professional and simple for an older
audience.
The mast head is not very clear as the
Joker’s head covers some letters,
however the bright red colouring makes
up for it. The cover line fills the centre of
the page and stands out. It clearly tells
the reader what the magazine is about
and why the Joker is on the cover.
EMPIRE DOUBLE PAGE
The colour theme on this
double page spread is blue.
Blue has connotations to trust
which makes the reader feel
like they can trust the
information on this page. There
are several different shades of
blue on this page therefore the
light blue stands out against the
dark blue clothes on the
character.
Once again, the title is covered
by a characters head, however
Empire have made up for it by
making the font big and boldly
coloured so that you can still
read the title clearly.
The cover line stands out as the
font is large and black which
contrasts against the blue. The
cover line also tells you what
film they are analysing if you do
not recognise the characters
from the image.
The imagery is a low angle
which suggests the
characters are powerful in
Star Trek. The photo is
very clear therefore it
stands out on the page
due to the bright colours of
blue and green.
There is one blob and star
on this double page
spread. It is a speech
bubble looking closer at
the film.
The font has connotations
to the cinema due to the
blocked lights. Next to the
title, there is the dates
where Star Trek will be
shown in cinemas.
There is only one image on the page which means the
reader does not get to see many bits in the film.
However, the lack of images is made up by a large
review on the film. This means that the reader decides
whether to watch the film by what the critic has wrote
instead of colourful images.
Once again, the writing style is formal which suggests
that the film is also for an older audience just like the
magazine.
EMPIRE- WEBSITE
The website has a dark
colour scheme of red
and black. The red title
grabs the readers
attention. The black
looks very simple but
professional which
highlights to the viewer
that the magazine and
website is for an older
reader as the interviews
and critics are in detail.
The mast head on the
website is clear and
bold in the traditional
red coloured font. It
stands out against the
black header. There are
several images on the
website which highlights
to the reader what
Empire is about.
The writing style on the website is formal which once again
highlights that Empire is targeted at an older audience of film
lovers. The font on the website is different to on the magazine. I
think this is because the images are about comics and superhero's
therefore the font has comic connotations.

RESEARCH- VOGUE
 Vogue is an American fashion and lifestyle magazine made up of many components
including fashion, beauty, culture, living, and runway. Vogue began as a weekly newspaper
in 1892 in the United States, before becoming a monthly publication years later. The British
Vogue was the first international edition launched in 1916. As of today there are 22
international editions, and the launch the twenty-third edition, Vogue Polska in Polish, has
been announced for March 2018.In July 1932, American Vogue placed its first color
photograph on the cover of the magazine. The photograph was taken by photographer
Edward Steichen and portrays a woman swimmer holding a beach ball in the air.[6]

VOGUE- FRONT PAGE
The colour scheme varies on the
cover of Vogue depending on
the image. However, the title is
always red so that it stands out
and grabs the viewers attention.
The colours on this cover are
very bright and bold due to the
background cushion, clothes and
green background. The colours
pink, yellow and green have a
connotation to summer.
The font is very simple and basic
where it looks professional and
clean. This has connotations to
the magazine appealing to an
older audience. The writing style
is formal which once again
connotes to an older audience
appeal.
The photograph fills up the entire page
background and text is written on top of the
image. On the cover of Vogue, there is
always a celebrity models. This means that
the magazine is about beauty and fashion
which appeals mainly to a female audience.
When analysing a previous magazine, the
image has covered several letters from the
mast head, however on the Vogue covers the
image is always behind the text. There are
several cover lines on this cover. For
example, ‘Selena Gets Real’ is in bold white
writing which stands out against the green
background and it also tells you what this
issue of Vogue is about. Another cover line is
‘ Spring’s Upbeat Style’ which suggests to the
reader how to change their fashion this
spring.
There is no barcode on the copy of Vogue
which suggests that the magazine is
expensive for a fashion and beauty
magazine. This could put readers off as they
want to know the price of a magazine they
are purchasing.
There is no blobs and stars on this cover which suggests that Vogue does not
giveaway any free items within the magazine: you are strictly paying for the
magazine and that’s all. All text on the cover is not in a box or border, it is just
overlayed over the image which creates a clean professional effect. The writing
is very small on the cover which highlights that the magazine is not for a young
audience.
VOGUE- DOUBLE PAGE
The colour scheme is black, red
and white. These colours are very
classic and simple which creates a
professional, elegant feel to the
magazine. Once again, the red
stands out and grabs the readers
attention because it is the boldest
colour on the page against the
white background. The font is very
classic and thin as well as small
which suggests to the reader that
there is lots of information on the
page which will appeal to people
who love their fashion and beauty
and could be too boring and
repetitive to someone who does
not have this interest. There are
several images on this double
page spread as well as one image
taking up the entire page. The
images fit in with the colour
scheme on the page as they are
black with red elements.
Because the writing is
separated into paragraphs, it
suggests that there is a lot of
information which is written
formally to interest the older
audience. The writing style
once again matches the
photos in the magazine of
very elegant and
professional.
The mast head is the model
and actors name therefore it
does not tell the reader
anything what the article is
about: a new film? The red
colour theme throughout the
magazine suggests that all
photographs of women in the
magazine has connotations
to them being very talented
powerful women.
The red colour theme has connotations to power
and love. Because talented famous women feature
throughout the magazine, the red suggests that the
public loves them and would be interested in reading
an interview with them which would later lead to
them purchasing a copy of Vogue. The images do
not seem to be edited much in the magazine; the
skin is smoothed and brightness edited however the
photos never have cool effects to make the photos
stand out and look different to other fashion
magazines. Vogue is classic and sleek. There are
several lips that have been over layed over images
with the statement red colour to grab the readers
attention.
VOGUE- WEBSITE
The colour scheme on the
website is different to the
magazine: there is no red. The
website is black and white
which is classic and simple
which makes the website and
magazine look high end and
expensive. The font is bold to
grab your attention because
the text is black. The writing
style is formal which suggests
that the magazine is high end
and expensive. Because the
colour scheme and images
look professional and classic,
the writing style has to match
otherwise the reader will be
confused what the style of the
magazine is. The mast head
has the iconic font style so that
the readers recognise the
website and magazine as it is
familiar to the reader. The
mast head ‘Vogue’ has
different versions written in the
O. For example, this
screenshot shows the reader
they are on the British Vogue
website.
There are several different
cover lines on the website
that are about new fashion
trends, beauty trends or the
news. There are side
headings that make it easy
for the reader to find what
they are looking for. Vogue
does not feature any blobs
and stars on their magazine
or website therefore, cover
lines and titles do not stand
out and grab your attention.
Instead the font is small and
black to give the website a
professional high end feel. At
the top of the website, there
is sometimes an offer where
you can subscribe to Vogue
and get 24 copies of Vogue
for £48. This is the first
pricing shown for Vogue that
has been advertised,
The photographs on the website are taken from catwalks
or photo shoots. This means that the images are
professional and edited to a high standard so that the
lighting is perfect to show the new fashion items or beauty
products. On the website, the website is structured so that
there is an image next to a cover line. This interests the
reader to click on the article because there is a title that
grabs their attention followed by an image which gives
them a visual representation of the story.

RESEARCH- ELLE
 Elle is a worldwide lifestyle magazine of French origin that focuses on
fashion, beauty, health, and entertainment.[3] It is the world's best-selling
fashion magazine.[citation needed] It was founded in 1945 by Pierre Lazareff and
his wife Hélène Gordon.[4] The title, in French, means "she" or "her".
 In 2007 the website of Elle was launched.
 Elle is the world's largest fashion magazine, with 43 international editions in
over 60 countries. Technologically speaking, the Elle brand is a global
network encompassing over 33 websites. Subscriptions account for 73
percent of readers. There are 33 Elle websites globally, which collectively
attract over 25 million unique visitors and 370 million page views per month.
The magazine reaches over 69 million readers. The vast majority (82 percent)
of Elle's audience are women between the ages of 18 and 49. Its readers
have a median age of 34.7 years. Forty percent of the readers are single, and
the median household income is $69,973.

ELLE- FRONT PAGE
The colour scheme varies on each
cover of Elle. For example, on this
cover the colour theme is white, grey
and yellow. The background is all grey
where the model wears white the same
colour as the mast head and some
cover lines. Other cover lines are
yellow which has connotations to
happiness. The yellow stands out
against the grey background and grabs
the readers attention. On other covers
of Elle, there has been pink, blue, red
and purple: each issue has a different
colour scheme. The white and grey
makes the magazine look simple and
classic, however the yellow makes the
cover look more interesting. The
photograph is taken in a studio
professionally with a major celebrity on
the cover therefore, this attracts people
of different ages to pick up a copy.
Because the model is wearing basic
clothing with minimal makeup the cover
looks simple. The image covers some
letters as it has been over layed. This
suggests that the celebrity on the cover
is more important to the reader than
what magazine it is; sales will increase.
The writing style is formal which suggests to
the reader that the target audience is older.
The mast head is at the top and is covered
by the model on the cover. The cover line is
always in the middle of the page. The cover
lines tends to be in a bolder font and a
brighter colour to grab the readers attention
more. There are no blobs and stars on the
front cover of Elle. This suggests that the
magazine does not give away any free items
within each issue; the reader is strictly
paying just for the magazine. The magazine
does not address the reader which creates a
separation between magazine and the
audience.
There is no barcode on the front of the magazine which suggests that the
magazine is expensive and high end. Vogue is Elle’s main competitor. Because the
colour scheme is basic and simple, there is little writing surrounding the model
which highlights to the reader that the magazine will interest an older audience.
There is only one image on the cover of Elle which fills the whole background. This
does not give the reader any insight into the magazine; they have to purchase it
themselves to see what's inside. Although, the one image on the cover is similar to
Vogue which creates a sophisticated expensive feel to the magazine.
ELLE- DOUBLE PAGE
The colour theme on this double
page spread is black, white and
red. Once again, there are
similarities between Elle and
Vogue: the two main fashion
magazine competitors. Because
the image is also in black and
white, the big bold red ‘L’ stands
out on the page. Another
similarity between Vogue and
Elle is that the image takes up
one page and the text is on the
other. The image is not eye
catching for the audience
because it is in black and white.
The photograph has been shot
in a studio with a plain white
background which can be too
basic and boring for the reader
as it does not interest them.
There is no title on this double
page spread that grabs the
readers attention. This means
that the reader has to associate
the image with the text on the
following page: the text is about
Lady Gaga.
The title at the top of the page is in
large black writing. The font is not
unique but classic therefore it does
not stand out and make the reader
interested. Because it is written in
black, the text is drowned out with
the other text on the page. The title
is placed at the top of the page like
always. This means that the reader
knows where to look to find out
what the paragraphs are about,
however the reader is not
interested as the title is simple and
basic. It does not give the reader
an insight into the text like a
possible new song or album. The
rest of the writing on the page is
set out in structured paragraphs
with formal language style. There
is a lot of writing on the right hand
side crammed onto one page. This
means that the reader may get
bored reading all this information
and skip to the next page as there
is nothing else to look at such as
other images or blobs and stars.
In my opinion, this double page spread is not
interesting to an audience member: there is too much
text and not enough images or colour. There is no
cover line on this spread therefore the reader has to
read various paragraphs before they understand
what this page is about. From analysing the colour
scheme and writing style, Elle magazine is targeted
at an older audience as no young person would be
interested by this page and want to read more: it is
too boring. Some letters are larger than others that
begin at the start of a paragraph, however once again
it gives the reader no insight. If the paragraph started
with an enlarged sentence, then this would interest
the reader more as they know what it is about. An
enlarged letter provides no interest or excitement.
ELLE- WEBSITE
The website follows the same
theme as the magazine with basic
colouring and a formal writing style.
This repeats that the target
audience is for someone older and
not young people. The general
layout of the website is very simple
and easy to navigate. The mast
head is at the top of the page which
stands out to the reader as ‘Elle’ is
written in bold capital black letters
against a plain white background: a
classic colour scheme. Under the
mast head there is several titles
that take you to a specific page. For
example, there is fashion, runway,
beauty etc. After that, there is the
news stories with cover lines. The
cover lines stand out because the
cover line is in a box that grabs the
readers attention. The box is black
with bold white writing; following the
classic and sleek colour scheme
once again. Next to each cover line
there is an image which further
interests the reader as well as
giving the reader an insight to the
following story.
There are several images on
the website which grab the
readers attention. The
photographs are taken in
studios, runways or of new
beauty products. The colours
from the image are eye
catching because the website
and magazine have followed a
classic professional colour
scheme of black and white.
This means that the outfits and
beauty products stand out and
interest the reader. On the Elle
website, Elle address the
audience several times in their
cover lines. For example,’ 9
ways to upgrade your eye
makeup’. This creates a
connection between the
magazine and reader as they
are offered help and new tips
and tricks to improve their
appearance or lifestyle.
I think the website successfully advertises products
because there are images of the products on
models and celebrities, therefore the reader wants
to look like them and have the products the
celebrities are using for themselves. The use of
photographs is interesting and successful on the
website as the reader becomes interested in
celebrities lifestyle and what clothes they are
wearing or products they are using. However, Elle
promotes where to follow them on Twitter and
Instagram which appeals to a young audience as
they can look at the images and photographs
without having to read lots of paragraphs and formal
writing.

SUMMARY
 From my research, I have decided to create a fashion and beauty magazine based
around the 70s era. I found that creating a magazine based on film would be
difficult to create as I found it hard trying to come up with creative ideas for the
front cover and other images that would be featured throughout the magazine.
When analysing Vogue and Elle, I was interested in the research I found which
lead me to creating a fashion magazine for this project. I became inspired by
looking at different covers and images from these magazines that I started coming
up with ideas for myself. Whilst studying Vogue and Elle, I found several similarities
and differences between the magazines. Vogue’s main competitor is Elle therefore,
the magazines used similar colour schemes and images on the cover. I wanted to
create a magazine with images featured that are different than the usual fashion
magazine. I want to create a fashion magazine about the 70s with suggested
places to find new pieces that are on trend. Vogue and Elle have a certain tone and
mood about the magazines where they are classic and sleek which influences the
magazine to feel expensive and high end. I would like to copy this technique of
formal writing matching with a black, white and red colour scheme so that my
magazine also seems professional and expensive.
MOOD BOARD
I want the front cover to
have a specific colour
scheme e.g. red as it is eye
catching. For example,
model wears red top with
red lipstick and red flower.
I want the front cover to
incorporate flowers like a flower
crown or the model is just
photographed with a flower. This
is because the early 70s were
known for hippies and ‘flower
power’ therefore this will
complete the 70s tone/mood.
Red is a bright colour that
is eye catching and grabs
the readers attention. If
the model has a red top
and is wearing red lipstick
whilst posing with a rose,
this will give the
magazine a classic sleek
feel as red features in the
colour scheme of many
famous fashion
magazines e.g. Vogue or
Elle.
Example clothing trends in the 70s were
floppy hats, round sunglasses, flared
trousers and bell sleeve tops. Other trends
were open flow skirts, shirts and trousers
with various different prints.
I would like the
images in my
magazine to be shot
in a studio with an all
white background.
This will make the
magazine look more
professional.
PROPOSAL
Working Title:
• Vintage Magazine.
• Decade Magazine.
Audience:
• I would like my fashion and beauty magazine to be targeted at females aged from 16-25 years old. I think
females will find my magazine more interesting than males because I will specifically talk about fashion
trends for females and where females can find these items. I will also incorporate a beauty element into my
magazine where I will find brands and products perfect to complete your 70s look. I think my magazine will
appeal to females aged between 16-25 because people in this age range tend to care more about
appearance and keeping up with new trends. Also, I will be talking about certain shops where to find items
that are targeted at a younger audience such as Topshop and Urban Outfitters as well as online stores and
second hand clothes. In my opinion, my magazine will interest people in the working class and upper
class. This is because people in the working class can treat themselves to new items that may be
considered expensive. Therefore they can invest and treat themselves every so often to update their look. I
also think my magazine will appeal to people in the upper class because these people have the money to
afford to keep up with new trends and the latest beauty products released. My magazine has to appeal to
people with a specific personality trait that they are interested in fashion and shopping as well as following
trends. They must be interested in updating their appearance and changing their style. Readers of a
fashion magazine must be interested in the celebrity lifestyle where you where similar cheaper outfits and
wear specific makeup to give you the same effect. This desired lifestyle will interest people in the working
class who may not have the money to update their wardrobe but enjoy learning and reading about the latest
trends. My audience must have an interest in fashion and beauty otherwise my magazine will not interest
them at all.
PROPOSAL
Rationale:
• Throughout the year I have made lots of progress. For example, I have used lots of
new programmes such as Photoshop which will be useful when editing images for the
cover of my fashion and beauty magazine. I have acquired the skills to edit the
brightness and make the skin appear clearer and smoother using Photoshop from
previous projects such as the print advertisement for Irn Bru. This will be helpful when
editing images to appear in my magazine where the models have to look flawless.
When taking images for my Irn Bru advertisement I found it interesting discovering the
best angles and shots to make the print advertisement photos look the best they can.
Because I have researched in projects in the past, I know what information to look for
when making notes as well as copying web links so I can visit the same page again if
needed as well as creating a bibliography.
Project Concept:
• I am going to make a fashion magazine based around the 70s era. I will talk about new trends and where to
buy the latest fashionable items for the best price or best quality. I will also discuss what makeup items you
could purchase to complete your 70s look. In the future, I need to research specific trends in the 70s and find
similar items from stores such as Topshop or Urban Outfitters or other high-street brands. I will also research
online shops such as ASOS Marketplace where you can find second hand clothing items that have the
vintage/ retro feel. I also need to research what clothing items and trends people in the target age range like.
As well as this I need to conduct a survey where people in that age range talk about what their favourite
fashion magazine is, favourite trend and what influences them to pick up a copy of a fashion/beauty
magazine. Also, I need to research covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue in the 70s to see how I can
incorporate this tone/mood onto my magazine cover. I am interested in this specific genre because I love
listening to 70s music and I try to incorporate 70s fashion elements into my style. I think that researching and
finding information about this era will be interesting and something different to talk about in a fashion
magazine other than the new trends today.
PROPOSAL
Evaluation:
• I will evaluate my work by conducting a survey with my friends and family to see
what they liked and disliked about the product as well as how it could be
improved in the future. The results will highlight to me errors and positives in my
work so in the future when studying photography and editing, I can make sure I
use similar techniques and avoid certain mistakes. I will also critic my own work
when creating my evaluation blog post. Here, I will evaluate my work extremely
harshly where I will talk about what I like about my magazine and dislike. Finally,
my work will be evaluated and marked by my tutor where I can learn from my
mistakes and develop my knowledge of photography and editing when moving
onto the next project/rotation.
PRACTICE FRONT COVER
To create my mock front
cover I used Photoshop. I
copied an image from
Google and pasted it onto a
new document. I wanted the
image to over lap the mast
head, therefore I copied the
layer and used the polygon
lasso tool to cut around the
models head and hair so
that it became in front of the
text which is common in
other fashion magazines
such as Vogue and Elle.
In the future I would like to
use an image that has a
white background so that I
could write the mast head in
red and the cover lines in
black as well as white.
I then created several
cover lines and edited it to
have a drop shadow so
that it stood out against the
models clothes. The cover
lines I wrote are not the
cover lines I will use for my
actual magazine. To make
the mock front cover look
more professional and real
I copied an image from
Google of a bar code.
PRACTICE DOUBLE PAGE
SPREAD
To create the double
page spread I used
Adobe InDesign. This
was my first time using
this programme
therefore, there are
several things I would
differently. For example
I would change the
layout of the text and
images so that I could
fit in more pictures.
When I researched other
double page spreads
from magazines such as
Vogue and Elle, they had
set out the page where
one image took up the
entire left side. On the
right side there are 5
paragraphs that will
surround several
images. I used Lorem
Ipsum to act as the
article to fill in the
paragraph space.
When I was creating a double page spread I wanted to layout the page
in this way to see if it would work and look good for my magazine. I like
this layout, however I would like to have more room for pictures of the
clothes and makeup products.
I put the title at the top of the page with an introduction paragraph
underneath which then leads into the 4 paragraphs about fashion and
beauty.
PRACTICE WEBSITE
To create my mock website
I used Wix. I tried to lay the
website out the same way
as my final website product
so that I could see whether
I liked the layout. The
colour theme is red, black
and white to link with the
magazine colour scheme. I
copied the images from
Google and pasted them
into Wix. Whilst
researching for the images
I tried to pick pictures with
a similar colour scheme so
that the photos all linked
together.
I wanted to include
cover lines underneath
the images to grab the
readers attention. I
have seen this
technique on the Vogue
website. I like this
technique because the
reader can visually see
what the article is about
as well as reading the
cover line which also
gives them an insight.
To improve my website,
I would make the cover
lines bolder so they
stand out more and
grab the readers
attention.
In the future, I would change the background
image to an all white background instead of a
marble print. I would also change the layout of the
images and cover lines so that they stood out
more whilst still looking classic and sleek.
Mind
Map
I would like my
magazine to have a
red, white and black
colour scheme to
make it look classic
and professional as
well as sleek just like
Vogue and Elle.
On the front cover, I use a close up
image of my friend that will model for
me throughout the magazine. The
cover will be a close up so that you
can see the makeup look as well as
the flowers in the image. I want my
friend to either wear a flower crown or
pose with a flower, (preferably a rose
to stick to colour theme), so that the
70s era is incorporated into the cover
and is highlighted to the reader.
Red is a bright colour
that stands out and
grabs the readers
attention therefore they
are influenced to read
the cover and the
article.
I would like the images to
be shot professionally in a
studio so that the image
has an all white
background. Because the
images are shot in a studio,
it will make the magazine
look expensive and high
end. It will also improve the
quality of the image as the
lighting will highlight the
makeup that is from the
70s.
Because my magazine is
about 70s fashion and
beauty trends, I would like
my friend to wear iconic
clothing from the 70s such
as flared jeans and bell
sleeves as well as floppy
hats and printed trousers.
Me and my friend have
access to these clothing
items therefore I already
have the clothes ready for
the images, however I need
to do some research for the
specific makeup looks worn
in the 70s.
My target audience are females aged
between 16 and 25 years old. This is
because I will only talk about women's
clothing and trends as well as makeup
which will not interest males. Also my
magazine is targeted at this age range
because this is where I believe people are
most interested in their appearance and
keeping up with the latest trends.

• I would like to use a darker red so that it stands out and grabs the readers attention. I would
like my writing to be black against a white background to give the magazine a classic, sleek,
professional tone so that it looks high end.
• I like these fonts because they are bold which grabs your attention. They are also similar to the
font that Vogue uses which I think is memorable and iconic.

  • 2. RESEARCH- EMPIRE  Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media of Hamburg based Bauer Media Group. From the first issue in July 1989, the magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap.  It is the biggest selling film magazine in the United Kingdom and is also published in the United States, Australia, Turkey, Russia, Italy and Portugal. Empire organises the annual Empire Awards which were sponsored by Sony Ericsson, and from 2009 sponsored by Jameson.[2] The awards are voted for by readers of the magazine.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_(film_magazine)  THE EMPIRE READERSHIP is three-quarters male and aged 18-40, employed, in a relationship (although not necessarily married), university educated and time-poor. Empire’s audience is passionate about film — they use cinema as escapism or insight into other worlds  http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/uploads/empiremediapack.pdf
  • 3. EMPIRE- FRONT PAGE The colour scheme for Empire magazine is red, grey and white. The red is bold and eye catching which grabs the readers attention. Because the image is dark, it stands out against the all grey background. Because there are no bright colours on the front cover, it suggests that the magazine is targeted at an older audience. The font is very big at the top of the page as well as in the middle. Empire have done this so that the title stands out and grabs the viewers attention. The font is bold and simple which connotes to the magazine being targeted at an older audience. The image used is very dark as the Joker is clothed in his iconic purple suit with green hair. Because the image is dark, it stands out against the all grey background. There are several blobs and stars on the cover. For example there is a bubble with the Jokers name as well as who plays him: Heath Ledger. There is also a bubble advertising what the magazine has to offer; interviews and photos. There is little writing on the front cover therefore it is difficult to tell what the writing style/ language is. However, from the writing on the cover, it seems that the writing language is formal. This suggests that the magazine style is professional and simple for an older audience. The mast head is not very clear as the Joker’s head covers some letters, however the bright red colouring makes up for it. The cover line fills the centre of the page and stands out. It clearly tells the reader what the magazine is about and why the Joker is on the cover.
  • 4. EMPIRE DOUBLE PAGE The colour theme on this double page spread is blue. Blue has connotations to trust which makes the reader feel like they can trust the information on this page. There are several different shades of blue on this page therefore the light blue stands out against the dark blue clothes on the character. Once again, the title is covered by a characters head, however Empire have made up for it by making the font big and boldly coloured so that you can still read the title clearly. The cover line stands out as the font is large and black which contrasts against the blue. The cover line also tells you what film they are analysing if you do not recognise the characters from the image. The imagery is a low angle which suggests the characters are powerful in Star Trek. The photo is very clear therefore it stands out on the page due to the bright colours of blue and green. There is one blob and star on this double page spread. It is a speech bubble looking closer at the film. The font has connotations to the cinema due to the blocked lights. Next to the title, there is the dates where Star Trek will be shown in cinemas. There is only one image on the page which means the reader does not get to see many bits in the film. However, the lack of images is made up by a large review on the film. This means that the reader decides whether to watch the film by what the critic has wrote instead of colourful images. Once again, the writing style is formal which suggests that the film is also for an older audience just like the magazine.
  • 5. EMPIRE- WEBSITE The website has a dark colour scheme of red and black. The red title grabs the readers attention. The black looks very simple but professional which highlights to the viewer that the magazine and website is for an older reader as the interviews and critics are in detail. The mast head on the website is clear and bold in the traditional red coloured font. It stands out against the black header. There are several images on the website which highlights to the reader what Empire is about. The writing style on the website is formal which once again highlights that Empire is targeted at an older audience of film lovers. The font on the website is different to on the magazine. I think this is because the images are about comics and superhero's therefore the font has comic connotations. https://www.empireonline.com/
  • 6. RESEARCH- VOGUE  Vogue is an American fashion and lifestyle magazine made up of many components including fashion, beauty, culture, living, and runway. Vogue began as a weekly newspaper in 1892 in the United States, before becoming a monthly publication years later. The British Vogue was the first international edition launched in 1916. As of today there are 22 international editions, and the launch the twenty-third edition, Vogue Polska in Polish, has been announced for March 2018.In July 1932, American Vogue placed its first color photograph on the cover of the magazine. The photograph was taken by photographer Edward Steichen and portrays a woman swimmer holding a beach ball in the air.[6]  38: AVERAGE AGE OF READER  LUXURY CONSUMERS 93% buy designer fashion / 92% buy premium beauty  ENGAGED READERS 90% of VOGUE readers pay attention to the advertising they see in print  A UNIQUE AUDIENCE 69% of VOGUE readers do not read Elle or Harper’s Bazaar  2.9 MILLION MONTHLY UNIQUE USERS  65 MILLION MONTHLY PAGEVIEWS  UK AUDIENCE PROFILE 96% Female 78% ABC1 43% London-based 33 Average Age | 60% Millennials (18-34 Vogue.co.u k file:///C:/Users/A bigail- Nicholls/AppDat a/Local/Temp/Te mp1_Conde- Nast-Media-Kit- Vogue- United%20Kingd om.zip/vg_media _pack_latest.pdf https://en.wikipe dia.org/wiki/Vogu e_(magazine)
  • 7. VOGUE- FRONT PAGE The colour scheme varies on the cover of Vogue depending on the image. However, the title is always red so that it stands out and grabs the viewers attention. The colours on this cover are very bright and bold due to the background cushion, clothes and green background. The colours pink, yellow and green have a connotation to summer. The font is very simple and basic where it looks professional and clean. This has connotations to the magazine appealing to an older audience. The writing style is formal which once again connotes to an older audience appeal. The photograph fills up the entire page background and text is written on top of the image. On the cover of Vogue, there is always a celebrity models. This means that the magazine is about beauty and fashion which appeals mainly to a female audience. When analysing a previous magazine, the image has covered several letters from the mast head, however on the Vogue covers the image is always behind the text. There are several cover lines on this cover. For example, ‘Selena Gets Real’ is in bold white writing which stands out against the green background and it also tells you what this issue of Vogue is about. Another cover line is ‘ Spring’s Upbeat Style’ which suggests to the reader how to change their fashion this spring. There is no barcode on the copy of Vogue which suggests that the magazine is expensive for a fashion and beauty magazine. This could put readers off as they want to know the price of a magazine they are purchasing. There is no blobs and stars on this cover which suggests that Vogue does not giveaway any free items within the magazine: you are strictly paying for the magazine and that’s all. All text on the cover is not in a box or border, it is just overlayed over the image which creates a clean professional effect. The writing is very small on the cover which highlights that the magazine is not for a young audience.
  • 8. VOGUE- DOUBLE PAGE The colour scheme is black, red and white. These colours are very classic and simple which creates a professional, elegant feel to the magazine. Once again, the red stands out and grabs the readers attention because it is the boldest colour on the page against the white background. The font is very classic and thin as well as small which suggests to the reader that there is lots of information on the page which will appeal to people who love their fashion and beauty and could be too boring and repetitive to someone who does not have this interest. There are several images on this double page spread as well as one image taking up the entire page. The images fit in with the colour scheme on the page as they are black with red elements. Because the writing is separated into paragraphs, it suggests that there is a lot of information which is written formally to interest the older audience. The writing style once again matches the photos in the magazine of very elegant and professional. The mast head is the model and actors name therefore it does not tell the reader anything what the article is about: a new film? The red colour theme throughout the magazine suggests that all photographs of women in the magazine has connotations to them being very talented powerful women. The red colour theme has connotations to power and love. Because talented famous women feature throughout the magazine, the red suggests that the public loves them and would be interested in reading an interview with them which would later lead to them purchasing a copy of Vogue. The images do not seem to be edited much in the magazine; the skin is smoothed and brightness edited however the photos never have cool effects to make the photos stand out and look different to other fashion magazines. Vogue is classic and sleek. There are several lips that have been over layed over images with the statement red colour to grab the readers attention.
  • 9. VOGUE- WEBSITE The colour scheme on the website is different to the magazine: there is no red. The website is black and white which is classic and simple which makes the website and magazine look high end and expensive. The font is bold to grab your attention because the text is black. The writing style is formal which suggests that the magazine is high end and expensive. Because the colour scheme and images look professional and classic, the writing style has to match otherwise the reader will be confused what the style of the magazine is. The mast head has the iconic font style so that the readers recognise the website and magazine as it is familiar to the reader. The mast head ‘Vogue’ has different versions written in the O. For example, this screenshot shows the reader they are on the British Vogue website. There are several different cover lines on the website that are about new fashion trends, beauty trends or the news. There are side headings that make it easy for the reader to find what they are looking for. Vogue does not feature any blobs and stars on their magazine or website therefore, cover lines and titles do not stand out and grab your attention. Instead the font is small and black to give the website a professional high end feel. At the top of the website, there is sometimes an offer where you can subscribe to Vogue and get 24 copies of Vogue for £48. This is the first pricing shown for Vogue that has been advertised, The photographs on the website are taken from catwalks or photo shoots. This means that the images are professional and edited to a high standard so that the lighting is perfect to show the new fashion items or beauty products. On the website, the website is structured so that there is an image next to a cover line. This interests the reader to click on the article because there is a title that grabs their attention followed by an image which gives them a visual representation of the story. http://www.vogue.co.uk/

Forty percent of the readers are single, and the median household income is $69,973.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elle_(magazine)
  • 11. ELLE- FRONT PAGE The colour scheme varies on each cover of Elle. For example, on this cover the colour theme is white, grey and yellow. The background is all grey where the model wears white the same colour as the mast head and some cover lines. Other cover lines are yellow which has connotations to happiness. The yellow stands out against the grey background and grabs the readers attention. On other covers of Elle, there has been pink, blue, red and purple: each issue has a different colour scheme. The white and grey makes the magazine look simple and classic, however the yellow makes the cover look more interesting. The photograph is taken in a studio professionally with a major celebrity on the cover therefore, this attracts people of different ages to pick up a copy. Because the model is wearing basic clothing with minimal makeup the cover looks simple. The image covers some letters as it has been over layed. This suggests that the celebrity on the cover is more important to the reader than what magazine it is; sales will increase. The writing style is formal which suggests to the reader that the target audience is older. The mast head is at the top and is covered by the model on the cover. The cover line is always in the middle of the page. The cover lines tends to be in a bolder font and a brighter colour to grab the readers attention more. There are no blobs and stars on the front cover of Elle. This suggests that the magazine does not give away any free items within each issue; the reader is strictly paying just for the magazine. The magazine does not address the reader which creates a separation between magazine and the audience. There is no barcode on the front of the magazine which suggests that the magazine is expensive and high end. Vogue is Elle’s main competitor. Because the colour scheme is basic and simple, there is little writing surrounding the model which highlights to the reader that the magazine will interest an older audience. There is only one image on the cover of Elle which fills the whole background. This does not give the reader any insight into the magazine; they have to purchase it themselves to see what's inside. Although, the one image on the cover is similar to Vogue which creates a sophisticated expensive feel to the magazine.
  • 12. ELLE- DOUBLE PAGE The colour theme on this double page spread is black, white and red. Once again, there are similarities between Elle and Vogue: the two main fashion magazine competitors. Because the image is also in black and white, the big bold red ‘L’ stands out on the page. Another similarity between Vogue and Elle is that the image takes up one page and the text is on the other. The image is not eye catching for the audience because it is in black and white. The photograph has been shot in a studio with a plain white background which can be too basic and boring for the reader as it does not interest them. There is no title on this double page spread that grabs the readers attention. This means that the reader has to associate the image with the text on the following page: the text is about Lady Gaga. The title at the top of the page is in large black writing. The font is not unique but classic therefore it does not stand out and make the reader interested. Because it is written in black, the text is drowned out with the other text on the page. The title is placed at the top of the page like always. This means that the reader knows where to look to find out what the paragraphs are about, however the reader is not interested as the title is simple and basic. It does not give the reader an insight into the text like a possible new song or album. The rest of the writing on the page is set out in structured paragraphs with formal language style. There is a lot of writing on the right hand side crammed onto one page. This means that the reader may get bored reading all this information and skip to the next page as there is nothing else to look at such as other images or blobs and stars. In my opinion, this double page spread is not interesting to an audience member: there is too much text and not enough images or colour. There is no cover line on this spread therefore the reader has to read various paragraphs before they understand what this page is about. From analysing the colour scheme and writing style, Elle magazine is targeted at an older audience as no young person would be interested by this page and want to read more: it is too boring. Some letters are larger than others that begin at the start of a paragraph, however once again it gives the reader no insight. If the paragraph started with an enlarged sentence, then this would interest the reader more as they know what it is about. An enlarged letter provides no interest or excitement.
  • 13. ELLE- WEBSITE The website follows the same theme as the magazine with basic colouring and a formal writing style. This repeats that the target audience is for someone older and not young people. The general layout of the website is very simple and easy to navigate. The mast head is at the top of the page which stands out to the reader as ‘Elle’ is written in bold capital black letters against a plain white background: a classic colour scheme. Under the mast head there is several titles that take you to a specific page. For example, there is fashion, runway, beauty etc. After that, there is the news stories with cover lines. The cover lines stand out because the cover line is in a box that grabs the readers attention. The box is black with bold white writing; following the classic and sleek colour scheme once again. Next to each cover line there is an image which further interests the reader as well as giving the reader an insight to the following story. There are several images on the website which grab the readers attention. The photographs are taken in studios, runways or of new beauty products. The colours from the image are eye catching because the website and magazine have followed a classic professional colour scheme of black and white. This means that the outfits and beauty products stand out and interest the reader. On the Elle website, Elle address the audience several times in their cover lines. For example,’ 9 ways to upgrade your eye makeup’. This creates a connection between the magazine and reader as they are offered help and new tips and tricks to improve their appearance or lifestyle. I think the website successfully advertises products because there are images of the products on models and celebrities, therefore the reader wants to look like them and have the products the celebrities are using for themselves. The use of photographs is interesting and successful on the website as the reader becomes interested in celebrities lifestyle and what clothes they are wearing or products they are using. However, Elle promotes where to follow them on Twitter and Instagram which appeals to a young audience as they can look at the images and photographs without having to read lots of paragraphs and formal writing. http://www.elleuk.com/
  • 14. SUMMARY  From my research, I have decided to create a fashion and beauty magazine based around the 70s era. I found that creating a magazine based on film would be difficult to create as I found it hard trying to come up with creative ideas for the front cover and other images that would be featured throughout the magazine. When analysing Vogue and Elle, I was interested in the research I found which lead me to creating a fashion magazine for this project. I became inspired by looking at different covers and images from these magazines that I started coming up with ideas for myself. Whilst studying Vogue and Elle, I found several similarities and differences between the magazines. Vogue’s main competitor is Elle therefore, the magazines used similar colour schemes and images on the cover. I wanted to create a magazine with images featured that are different than the usual fashion magazine. I want to create a fashion magazine about the 70s with suggested places to find new pieces that are on trend. Vogue and Elle have a certain tone and mood about the magazines where they are classic and sleek which influences the magazine to feel expensive and high end. I would like to copy this technique of formal writing matching with a black, white and red colour scheme so that my magazine also seems professional and expensive.
  • 15. MOOD BOARD I want the front cover to have a specific colour scheme e.g. red as it is eye catching. For example, model wears red top with red lipstick and red flower. I want the front cover to incorporate flowers like a flower crown or the model is just photographed with a flower. This is because the early 70s were known for hippies and ‘flower power’ therefore this will complete the 70s tone/mood. Red is a bright colour that is eye catching and grabs the readers attention. If the model has a red top and is wearing red lipstick whilst posing with a rose, this will give the magazine a classic sleek feel as red features in the colour scheme of many famous fashion magazines e.g. Vogue or Elle. Example clothing trends in the 70s were floppy hats, round sunglasses, flared trousers and bell sleeve tops. Other trends were open flow skirts, shirts and trousers with various different prints. I would like the images in my magazine to be shot in a studio with an all white background. This will make the magazine look more professional.
  • 16. PROPOSAL Working Title: • Vintage Magazine. • Decade Magazine. Audience: • I would like my fashion and beauty magazine to be targeted at females aged from 16-25 years old. I think females will find my magazine more interesting than males because I will specifically talk about fashion trends for females and where females can find these items. I will also incorporate a beauty element into my magazine where I will find brands and products perfect to complete your 70s look. I think my magazine will appeal to females aged between 16-25 because people in this age range tend to care more about appearance and keeping up with new trends. Also, I will be talking about certain shops where to find items that are targeted at a younger audience such as Topshop and Urban Outfitters as well as online stores and second hand clothes. In my opinion, my magazine will interest people in the working class and upper class. This is because people in the working class can treat themselves to new items that may be considered expensive. Therefore they can invest and treat themselves every so often to update their look. I also think my magazine will appeal to people in the upper class because these people have the money to afford to keep up with new trends and the latest beauty products released. My magazine has to appeal to people with a specific personality trait that they are interested in fashion and shopping as well as following trends. They must be interested in updating their appearance and changing their style. Readers of a fashion magazine must be interested in the celebrity lifestyle where you where similar cheaper outfits and wear specific makeup to give you the same effect. This desired lifestyle will interest people in the working class who may not have the money to update their wardrobe but enjoy learning and reading about the latest trends. My audience must have an interest in fashion and beauty otherwise my magazine will not interest them at all.
  • 17. PROPOSAL Rationale: • Throughout the year I have made lots of progress. For example, I have used lots of new programmes such as Photoshop which will be useful when editing images for the cover of my fashion and beauty magazine. I have acquired the skills to edit the brightness and make the skin appear clearer and smoother using Photoshop from previous projects such as the print advertisement for Irn Bru. This will be helpful when editing images to appear in my magazine where the models have to look flawless. When taking images for my Irn Bru advertisement I found it interesting discovering the best angles and shots to make the print advertisement photos look the best they can. Because I have researched in projects in the past, I know what information to look for when making notes as well as copying web links so I can visit the same page again if needed as well as creating a bibliography. Project Concept: • I am going to make a fashion magazine based around the 70s era. I will talk about new trends and where to buy the latest fashionable items for the best price or best quality. I will also discuss what makeup items you could purchase to complete your 70s look. In the future, I need to research specific trends in the 70s and find similar items from stores such as Topshop or Urban Outfitters or other high-street brands. I will also research online shops such as ASOS Marketplace where you can find second hand clothing items that have the vintage/ retro feel. I also need to research what clothing items and trends people in the target age range like. As well as this I need to conduct a survey where people in that age range talk about what their favourite fashion magazine is, favourite trend and what influences them to pick up a copy of a fashion/beauty magazine. Also, I need to research covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue in the 70s to see how I can incorporate this tone/mood onto my magazine cover. I am interested in this specific genre because I love listening to 70s music and I try to incorporate 70s fashion elements into my style. I think that researching and finding information about this era will be interesting and something different to talk about in a fashion magazine other than the new trends today.
  • 18. PROPOSAL Evaluation: • I will evaluate my work by conducting a survey with my friends and family to see what they liked and disliked about the product as well as how it could be improved in the future. The results will highlight to me errors and positives in my work so in the future when studying photography and editing, I can make sure I use similar techniques and avoid certain mistakes. I will also critic my own work when creating my evaluation blog post. Here, I will evaluate my work extremely harshly where I will talk about what I like about my magazine and dislike. Finally, my work will be evaluated and marked by my tutor where I can learn from my mistakes and develop my knowledge of photography and editing when moving onto the next project/rotation.
  • 19. PRACTICE FRONT COVER To create my mock front cover I used Photoshop. I copied an image from Google and pasted it onto a new document. I wanted the image to over lap the mast head, therefore I copied the layer and used the polygon lasso tool to cut around the models head and hair so that it became in front of the text which is common in other fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle. In the future I would like to use an image that has a white background so that I could write the mast head in red and the cover lines in black as well as white. I then created several cover lines and edited it to have a drop shadow so that it stood out against the models clothes. The cover lines I wrote are not the cover lines I will use for my actual magazine. To make the mock front cover look more professional and real I copied an image from Google of a bar code.
  • 20. PRACTICE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD To create the double page spread I used Adobe InDesign. This was my first time using this programme therefore, there are several things I would differently. For example I would change the layout of the text and images so that I could fit in more pictures. When I researched other double page spreads from magazines such as Vogue and Elle, they had set out the page where one image took up the entire left side. On the right side there are 5 paragraphs that will surround several images. I used Lorem Ipsum to act as the article to fill in the paragraph space. When I was creating a double page spread I wanted to layout the page in this way to see if it would work and look good for my magazine. I like this layout, however I would like to have more room for pictures of the clothes and makeup products. I put the title at the top of the page with an introduction paragraph underneath which then leads into the 4 paragraphs about fashion and beauty.
  • 21. PRACTICE WEBSITE To create my mock website I used Wix. I tried to lay the website out the same way as my final website product so that I could see whether I liked the layout. The colour theme is red, black and white to link with the magazine colour scheme. I copied the images from Google and pasted them into Wix. Whilst researching for the images I tried to pick pictures with a similar colour scheme so that the photos all linked together. I wanted to include cover lines underneath the images to grab the readers attention. I have seen this technique on the Vogue website. I like this technique because the reader can visually see what the article is about as well as reading the cover line which also gives them an insight. To improve my website, I would make the cover lines bolder so they stand out more and grab the readers attention. In the future, I would change the background image to an all white background instead of a marble print. I would also change the layout of the images and cover lines so that they stood out more whilst still looking classic and sleek.
  • 22. Mind Map I would like my magazine to have a red, white and black colour scheme to make it look classic and professional as well as sleek just like Vogue and Elle. On the front cover, I use a close up image of my friend that will model for me throughout the magazine. The cover will be a close up so that you can see the makeup look as well as the flowers in the image. I want my friend to either wear a flower crown or pose with a flower, (preferably a rose to stick to colour theme), so that the 70s era is incorporated into the cover and is highlighted to the reader. Red is a bright colour that stands out and grabs the readers attention therefore they are influenced to read the cover and the article. I would like the images to be shot professionally in a studio so that the image has an all white background. Because the images are shot in a studio, it will make the magazine look expensive and high end. It will also improve the quality of the image as the lighting will highlight the makeup that is from the 70s. Because my magazine is about 70s fashion and beauty trends, I would like my friend to wear iconic clothing from the 70s such as flared jeans and bell sleeves as well as floppy hats and printed trousers. Me and my friend have access to these clothing items therefore I already have the clothes ready for the images, however I need to do some research for the specific makeup looks worn in the 70s. My target audience are females aged between 16 and 25 years old. This is because I will only talk about women's clothing and trends as well as makeup which will not interest males. Also my magazine is targeted at this age range because this is where I believe people are most interested in their appearance and keeping up with the latest trends.

They are also similar to the font that Vogue uses which I think is memorable and iconic.
