2. VOGUE WEBSITE
Vogue website is very
minimalistic, to potentially
make it easier for
readers/consumers to use.
And to ensure that the
vogue website is chic as
possible.
The font style and words are
in keeping with its print
base magazine. This might
be also to ensure the
audience can relate and
understand the terminology
used within both Vogue
magazine/website.
3. LOVE WEBSITE
âLoveâ magazine is still
considered as fashion magazine,
but also a artistic/photography
based, this therefore creates a
space in the market for
consumers, as it is slightly
different too any other existing
magazine.
The website also shows
consistency with the magazine
its advertising, with links to its
online articles and images or art
and photography. The use of the
colour (red and blue) within the
title connotes wealth and
glamour. The title has its own
graphics of what seems like
thrills you would see on clothing
often shown within the
magazine. This here creates
cohesion with the magazine and
its websites. The language used
in the links on the websites uses
expert power, such as "The
weekly round up of Tim Walker"
5. IMAGES OF EXISTING MAGAZINES.
The paper magazine focuses
on celebrity endorsement,
this is creates a
distinguished difference
between other fashion
magazines, as it is often
only features one celebrity.
They also only release a new
magazine every season.
7. IMAGES OF EXISTING MAGAZINES
DPS
The Hello magazine has a very royal and
glamourous front cover page. It has a white and
grey title to match the main image colour scheme,
like the diamond tiara and pearl studded jacket,
This might have been done to show consistency
through its images and text. (Text-image
cohesion). The font it self uses a very bold and a
eye catching title. It was necessary for the
magazine to use simple but elements of silver to
entwine with the wealthy imagery across the cover.
This front cover all had to be respectful of the
death of a royal family member. The words used
are complimentary to Princess Diana, such as
"Humanitarian" "Fashion icon". The language used
is not something you would often see in a gossip
magazine, more similar to the style of a newspaper
article, this is interesting as the language is
different for a royal, rather than a celebrity.
9. WORDS.
Writing style within fashion magazines- I found that the writing style within
magazines such as âLoveâ or âPaperâ they used little writing but when used
the words were very specific too the fashion genre. The use of expert power
helps the audience feel as if theyâre being educated and therefore
appreciating the in depth knowledge of the fashion industry.
Language used within fashion magazine- To suit the target audience (upper
and middle class), when a§rticles are included in the magazines they use
lengthy and long paragraphs and use formal language so the reader can
understand what is being said specific to the fashion industry.
Text/image ratio- In general high fashion magazines tend to focus on the
high quality images to content wealth and represent high end fashion. The
text that goes with the images are minimal, unless there is an article on a
particular aspect of fashion.
Mode of address- Fashion magazines tend to use both informal/formal
mode of address, for example cosmopolitan uses a less formal tone but
direct to appeal to more readers âhow you get a beach bodyâ this is a
common trait to many FMâs, this might be done to ensure readers feel
included within the fashion industry.
10. FONTS.
Type face- High-end magazines all share one thing in common â they love a
beautiful serif font. It makes fashion titles look elegant, timeless and luxurious.
Harper's Bazaar uses Didot, a typeface which has become synonymous with the
magazine. A well-chosen typeface can pull together a magazine cover, and make
it instantly attractive, contemporary and relevant.
Style- Another thing that makes fashion magazine layout look desirable, is a
combination of serif and sans serif fonts. The simplicity of the sans serif font
along with the serif font can give a very modern yet timeless look. The quality of
look is dependent on the caliber of the typographer and then perfectly
composing their work in the layout.
Make a statement with big letters
Another attribute of a fashionable spread is using large scale serif lettering. You
will find this technique used in almost every issue of popular fashion magazines.
Some even like to add color to maximize the impact. Here is a great example of
GQ magazine using Paris Pro Typeface upper case G for their interview with
Giorgio Armani:
11. COLOUR.
Colour palette
Colour represents an important element in design so thatâs why we
have to choose the right ones for the magazine. The colors used for
the cover should be tones that appear in the main photograph to
create harmony, or in a contrasting combination to give a different
feeling.
Schemes- Decided on elements of colour before taking photographs
so you can try to highlight them in photographs, this is important for
continuntiy throughout covers
12. CONVENTIONS.
Masthead- The masthead is the title block for the magazines, usually this
the most eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct.
Cover lines- Cover lines are short statements found on the cover of the
magazine that allude to or describe the articles inside. Their purpose is to
entice the reader into picking up and/or buying the magazine. Generally
there's one main larger cover line and then a few (or lots of) smaller ones.
Images- a representation of the external form of a person or thing in art.
Bar code- a machine-readable code in the form of numbers and a pattern of
parallel lines of varying widths, printed on a commodity and used especially
for stock control. (all magazines require a barcode)
Blobs and stars- Not images or text, more like graphics, highlights
necessary information that might be missed in a packed magazine front
covers.
17. NME WEBSITE
I found that even music magazines
such as NME kept a simplistic
tones this might be to keep the
next issueâs colour schemes etc, a
secret, to ensure sales. This
website also had a little bit of
advertising and product
placement.
21. PRINT INDESIGN EVALUATION
Whilst using In-design for the first time, We learned the basic skills of
using the software. For example the use of grids were essential for
creating an accurate layout of a double page spread, the grids helped
me keep the columns in line with one another, and also organize my
images to suit the codes and conventions of a magazine double page
spread.
I also used âpalletdoâ to create a organized colour scheme, this
helped me create consistency within my front cover spread.
22. WEBSITE EVALUATION.
For my website we used a range of free website creators. A few Wix,
Wordpress , Yola, Free Website, Builder. We did this to see which site
gave the best template lay outs, how simple it was to use, and also
how professional the end outcome was.
I firstly used Yola, This was my first choice, as I found this to be the
most simple one to use with the most affective as to what I wanted
too achieve for my end goal.
I also tried WordPress but unfortunately I did not find the same
standard of
23. Within my practice cover, I learned using grids, to
line up and keep my images, bar codes, page
numbers and text all in line with each other. This
helps me create a more polished and professional
looking practice. Creating a mock up front cover
helped me finalise the look of my magazine cover, I
wanted to include the pastel colour scheme as I felt
it was chic and suited the codes and conventions of
a fashion/lifestyle magazine. However I felt the
using a black and white image was potentially not
suited for a front cover image, I felt using black and
white images were more suitable for double page
spreads, so that the audiences attention were spread
to both the article text and images included in a
double page spread. I also liked the font within my
mock front cover page, simply because it was
traditional to fashion magazines, such as vogue, Elle
etc, When I was creating my final cover I applied the
font that I felt fitted the fashion magazine aesthetic.
24. IDEA GENERATION.
For my actual production, I will plan the following: Images (Models,
Locations, Styles)
Models- Olivia groom and Eleanor Johnson. I picked these models
due to the fact one is blonde and one is brunette. I found this an
interesting concept because it would make my the photo contrast
with each model.
Style- I wanted to use medium close up shot, of my models, side to
side, with nude colour tops, and simplistic make up to which would
link in with some tag lines I plan to have. E.g âsupernaturalâ. Once I
have taken my images I will go through different filters and editing,
to find the right filter too taste.
I wanted to use an high-end finished look, to create this I will use the
studio at college, I would use a black or white back ground with a
variation of flash or non flash.
27. ARTICLES IDEAS & COVER LINES
For my initial title I wanted to use âLunarâ I thought it was an individual name
which would stand out in audiences minds, much like âvogue, loveâ and other
mainstream fashion magazines. I liked the idea of using just one word for a
title. The reason for this being that you can edit, change and add graphics to
the font/title. For example within in the love magazine they often add
different graphics, to create a new vibe/style or for even different topics for
the magazines themes of each issue.
For some my articles I wanted one article to focus on ânatural beautyâ
however I decided this was something I had seen so much within fashion
magazines, and articles, I wanted to write an article on something
refreshing, new and original. So I came up with the idea of an almost
historic. Using clothing that I considered to be timeless. But as I thought of
this, I wanted to ensure that it was not boring and mundane for the
audience. So I might it snappy and a easy read. So I decided on picking 5
items of clothing, and write a fair bit on each clothing.

34. BREAKDOWN OF PRODUCTION.
Photography-I plan to take my photoâs in the college studios, and
also some at home.
I wanted to use the studio to create a professional/ High end
photoshoot, to suit my conventions of a fashion magazine. I have
tried to book the studio for Friday 8th of Dec. I will be using a white
background, with different looks.
Once photoâs have been taken I will begin to put my magazine front
cover and DPS together, I will plan to take around 15-20 photos and
pick the best from the bunch.
I will also try to complete website before next week. I will use
WorldPress.com to create a free website trial.
