Research- Calendar
Strengths: One of the strengths of my research based around the Nat Geo calendar was the design on the
cover gave me inspiration for my own product. On the Nat Geo calendar, there are 12 images on the cover
which reveals all the photographs, however this helped me understand that I did not like this layout and
wanted to try something else. Another strength of my research was the audience profile because this allowed
me to see what the audience of the calendar enjoy and have as a profession. This helped with my product
because the customers of the Nat Geo calendar are aged between 18 and 24 which means that my prediction
was wrong. I thought that the calendar would be purchased and more interesting to an older audience,
however young people who enjoy photography in their spare time are interested in the calendar because it
gives them more inspiration for their own products. Another strength is that evaluating the calendar
highlighted to me that I need to create a logo to feature across all my products so there is strong branding
across all the products and the products become more recognisable. This has helped me with my product
because I am creating several different products and I want them to be all connected therefore creating a logo
of my own will increase the quality and make the products look more professional. The final strength of my
research was that I was able to see the photographs that Nat Geo used on their calendar. This means that I
could see any common colours, styles and type of shots as well as how the photographs are edited. Because
professional photographers and editors work on the calendar, it highlighted to me what techniques interest a
younger audience. This helped me with my product because I found that the photography style is similar
throughout the all the images as well as the type of shot. There is a strong colour scheme on the calendar
which highlighted to me that I have to have consistent techniques featured in each image so that it is all
connected.
The audience profile for Nat
Geo calendar:
Research- Calendar
Weaknesses: One of the weaknesses of my research was that I only researched one product example
of a calendar. I did not research other calendars and study their layouts, types of shots, colours etc. This
would have allowed me to learn more techniques and broaden my knowledge when creating a
calendar. This also lead to me quickly researching other designs for calendars during production as I
knew that I did not want to follow the Nat Geo style. In the future, I would research more existing
products so that I get to see alternate options as this narrowed my understanding. Another weakness
was that I did not discuss why I wanted to focus on this specific calendar. I wanted to look at Nat Geo
calendars because I personally think the quality of the photographs is very professional and high
quality. I wanted to copy techniques to make my own calendar look just as good. Including this
information into my research would have allowed me to focus on these specific areas in more detail
and perhaps learn something new. My final weakness of my research was that I chose a calendar that
was based on landscape photography. Even though my calendar will have some landscape images, the
main theme is on nature and wildlife. This means that I did not get to see how Nat Geo photograph
wildlife and flowers or how they edit the colours. This means that my work may be lacking several
crucial techniques that improve photography. In the future, I would like to focus on the specific style of
photography as well as the layout.
Here are wildlife photography calendars by Nat Geo that I
should have analyzed as well as the landscape
photography calendar:
Research- Map
Strengths: One of the strengths of my research of the walkthrough was that it highlighted to me new
techniques that I could use to make the map as easy to understand as possible. For example, creating a
colour coded box makes the map much more simple because you can colour code where the toilets,
stairs, cafeteria etc. is instead of attempting to draw it. This helped me with my product because it saved
lots of time trying to draw all the rooms as well as small details within them to signify what the room
was. Another strength of my research was that the example that I researched had an ariel view with
different frames of viewpoint. This made the map quite confusing as well as not suiting all customers
that visit the exhibition as it needs to be simple. This helped me with my product because I decided that
I wanted it to be an ariel image, however it had to be much simpler, not following certain techniques on
the example.
These maps are better examples
because they are designed flat and
much more basic.
Research- Map
Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses is the same across all my research; I only studied one example of
a map. This means that I did not get to look at other designs and layouts therefore I could not see how
to make my map simple as I researched a complicated design. In my head, I knew how I wanted to
layout the map therefore I should have researched a similar existing map to help me during my
production. This effected my production because building the map was time consuming as I was unsure
of how to start or how to make it look good. Once again I had to quickly research other existing products
so that I could copy those techniques. Another weakness of my research was that I researched a map
that was designed for an entire museum and not just one exhibition. This meant that I repeated this in
my own work when it was supposed to focus on the exhibition. My map was intended to show you how
to get there but also how the photographs would be projected. This disrupted my own production
because I created a map for the museum which took up an entire week. It also disrupted production
because I then had to add smaller detail for the exhibition which resulted in the map looking messy.
The exhibition on the first floor is
not very detailed as it is only
signified by walls throughout the
room. I should have included
arrows signifying where you walk
around and enter workshops etc.
Because the map is a flat plan, it is
very simple. However, it does not
really look like a map because
there is not a 3D element. I should
have included more shading and
heightened certain areas to make it
look more realistic.
Another improvement to my map
would be adding more text and
information. On existing products there
is text near the bottom of the page
therefore I should have incorporated
this technique.
Research- Poster
Strengths: One strength of researching the National History Museum poster was that it gave me
inspiration of what I would write on my own poster to advertise the exhibition. For example, the title of
the event is in the centre of the page in the largest font size. This means that it grabs your attention and
influences you to read what the poster is advertising. This research helped me with my own product
because I knew how to layout the page so that the title of the event was central and large.
Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses is that I only researched one product example which is not created
in the style that I want. I knew that I wanted my poster to be more abstract with drawings on, therefore
researching this poster was not very helpful because there is one photograph on the cover. If I could
improve my research, I would not only look for another example but maybe research art exhibition
posters instead as they may follow the same style. This did not effect my product much because I knew
what I wanted the poster to look like even before research.
Research- Guide Book
Strengths: Researching examples of the guide book was very difficult because I struggled to find
books for photography exhibitions. However, the guide book that I researched did help my
product. For example, it highlighted to me that the least amount of font possible on the cover is
the most effective as the main focus is on the image and the background. This helped me with my
own guide book because I planned to write more on the cover, however minimising this makes
the photograph much more effective. Another strength of my research was the colour scheme on
the cover. The Natural History Museum has a blue and white colour scheme which is similar to my
own colour scheme. This helped me with my product because I got to see an example layout and
design using my colour scheme. Furthermore, this gave me inspiration about what I would
include on the cover, what colour the font would be and what type of image would feature.
Research- Guide Book
Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses of my research was that the example that I analyzed was
advertising a museum of natural history. This means that on the cover there was graphics of what a small
section of the museum looks like. However, if I had researched an example of a photography guide book
this would have been much more helpful as I could have seen how the text surrounded the image, how
the photograph was edited and other important techniques. This affected my product because I did not
know where to place the text where it stood out and was legible. This made the production of the guide
book much longer. Another weakness of my research was that I did not discuss what I did not like about
the cover. If I analyzed what I did not like on the cover I would highlight why I avoid these techniques. For
example, I did not like how the behind the image there was a blurred background. I thought the design
was too boring and not eye catching. Therefore, I should have discussed what I would change on the cover
and what techniques I would like to copy. This affected my product because I did not know what type of
photograph to feature on the cover and how to edit it so that it stood out and the cover would look fun
influencing the customers of the exhibition to pick up a copy of the guide book. Below are some
photography guide book examples that I should have researched.
Research- Portfolio
Strengths: I enjoyed researching different portfolios because I found it interesting and inspiring to look
at other photographers work. When researching portfolios, I looked at different professional
photographers websites where there was a gallery of their work under different styles. One of my
strengths of this research was that I was looking at examples of professional work. Therefore I could see
specific techniques that I would like to copy so that my own photography would be high quality. This
helped me with my own photography because I got to expand my knowledge and learn about the
Fibonacci ratio and the rule of thirds. I also experimented with new ways to edit my photography on
Photoshop to make my photographs look much better. Finally, it helped me with my product because I
was allowed to use a new camera and macro lens which is designed for nature photography. This means
that my product quality was majorly improved resulting in some good photographs. Another strength of
my research was that I analysed each style of photography that I would like to use on my products. I
looked at examples of this style and analysed the image. I discussed the colour scheme, type of shot and
much more. This helped me with my product because whilst taking the photographs, I thought about
the colours that I wanted in the image as well as the type of shot and the angle.
My photography at the
beginning of the rotation
versus at the end:
Research- Portfolio
Weaknesses: The major weakness of my research is that I did analyze one specific portfolio and
annotate it. Instead I looked at lots of different examples online, they copied some images and
analyzed them. If I could improve this, I would annotate the portfolio as a whole; how the
photographs are layed out on the page, where the information is, colour schemes etc. This
affected my product because I was unsure of how to design the portfolio. I did not know how to
include as many images as possible as well as writing about the photograph and how I edited it,
(also the equipment). In the future, I would analyze one image as well as the entire portfolio so
that I could expand my knowledge on portfolios as well as photography. Another weakness of my
research was that I did not read the information that was provided on the websites. On some of
the portfolios I looked at, there was information about the photographs which would have been
helpful to read as it would allow me to know what writing style and information to include on my
own portfolio. In the future, I would make notes on the information so I would have better
knowledge on what to write myself. This affected my product because I wanted to write about
the location of the image, what camera was used and how it was edited. I was unsure of how to
write this underneath all the images as I ran out of space.
Research- Exhibition
Strengths: One of my strengths on my research was that I researched a photography exhibition that I
visited before. A few years ago I went to the Beverley Exhibition because it had award winning
photographs. Visiting the exhibition allowed me to discuss what interested me in going to exhibition.
Whatever these techniques were; I would include at my own product. This helped me with my
exhibition because I could include workshops, award winning photographs and question and answer
sessions to include everyone. Another strength of my research was that I chose an example that is a
nature photography style which is what I want my own exhibition to include. This means that I could
analyse how they were portrayed and set out in the exhibition as well as what type of photographs are
on display. My research helped me with my product because it allowed me to design a map of how to
layout the exhibition in the best way possible. The final strength of my research was that it gave me lots
of inspiration for my own exhibition. For example, at the side of the photographs there is a plaque of
information about the photograph: who it was photographed by, where and the equipment used. This
helped me with my product because I decided I wanted to use this technique across several of my
products. I thought that this would make my exhibition look much more sleek and full of information.
Research- Exhibition
Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses in my research was that I did not build a character profile of the
type of people that attend photography exhibitions. This would help my product because it would give
me more knowledge about my audience and how to interest them. I created a survey which gave me an
insight, however the more information about my audience the better. In the future, I would create an
audience profile to expand my knowledge and understanding. This affected my product because I spent
lots of time creating the survey, however I was only able to ask 10 questions. Having an audience profile
would give me more insight into their hobbies, profession and age. I knew how to interest a younger
audience, however it was more difficult finding ways to interest an older audience which is why I
included a question and answer session. Another weakness of my research was that I should have
researched multiple exhibitions. This would have highlighted to me different ways to display the
photographs as well as other techniques such as background music. To improve this, I would visit
another near by exhibition and see how the pictures are displayed as well as what activities there are
and how the information is shown.
Another exhibition I should have
analyzed: York Museum Gardens
Photography Exhibition.
Planning
Planning each individual product was very difficult and time consuming. I also experienced several difficulties along the way such as
downloading fonts. I chose three fonts from Dafont.com and analysed why I wanted to use them, however when it came to production that
would not install because they were corrupt. This means that I then had to chose different fonts that did not have this font type but also
that I liked and thought would fit with the products. I then researched about framing my photographs using the Fibonacci ratio and the rule
of thirds. This was a major strength in my planning because I got to take practice shots using these techniques which resulted in my
photographs massively improving in quality. This technique helped my product because my photographs have now improved in quality and
look more professional. After that, I practiced writing out what I was going to include on my map, poster etc. However, this was one of my
weaknesses as I spent a long time deciding on what I would write but when it came to production it would not all fit on the cover or look
good. In the future, I would write down ideas of what I want to include but then design it on the page to make sure it would all fit. Even
though this didn’t effect production too much, it resulted in me not coming up with designs and information that was crucial to the product
such as designing a logo.
I then began designing layouts for the products. For the portfolio, I decided where to place the photographs and where to include the
information. One of my weaknesses was the plan for the portfolio because I could only include 5 of my photographs on the portfolio and I
would have liked to include at least 7. In the future, I would improve this by researching more examples of nature photography portfolios so
I could see how they are structured. This effected my product because I had to make the font quite small so that the images were large
enough to stand out. In the future, I would create alternate layout plans so I had more options to follow and look at.
Finally, I discussed what resources I would need, what possible health and safety issues could possibly happen as well as a contingency plan.
Completing these forms allowed me to address what could possibly go wrong with the equipment or production and how I would resolve
this problem. Filling in the pages was helpful, however I did not go back to look at the pages when I experienced a problem to see how to
resolve it. One problem I experienced was that my camera could zoom in close enough to the flowers therefore there was lots of
background noise. To resolve this I borrowed a camera an lens from college which was designed for macro photography.
Time Management
Managing was very difficult. I had challenged myself to creating several different products that
would take up a lot of time. Throughout the rotation I experienced lots of problems. For example,
during the holidays I had lots of homework to do which included improving my power points as
well as carrying on with production. I attempted to download Photoshop, however it was not
working therefore I came into college during the week off so that I could catch up with
production. Once we were back at college, we had several days off because of exams. However,
to resolve this I came in on the mornings to carry on with production. At the beginning of the
production week, I spent too long on the map and poster which resulted in me being very far
behind producing my other products. Overall, I think I managed my time well because I gave
myself a sufficient amount of time to edit my photographs and each individual product. I did not
want to rush my production because I wanted to be happy with the outcome. However, I was
slightly rushed when we came back after the holidays. I completed my work on time, however if I
was given more time I would improve my PowerPoint's more and spend more time editing
photographs and my products. If I had more time I would improve my map as I am not so happy
with the result. I would also edit a few things on my calendar cover and portfolio to improve the
quality. One specific improvement would be making sure that my logo features across all my
products so the audience recognises the brand.
Technical Qualities- Calendar
There are several similarities
and differences between
these 2 products. One
similarity is the bar code is in
the bottom right on both
pages. I included a bar code
in the bottom of my calendar
so that it looks more
professional and increases
the quality. Another
similarity between the
products is that the images
on the cover are of wildlife
and nature. My calendar
includes photographs of
wildlife and nature because I
thought it would make the
cover much more interesting
to highlight the variety of
image style that is featured
throughout the calendar. On
the Nat Geo calendar there
are lots of photographs of
wildlife, however there are
some landscape and flower
shots incorporated
throughout. The final
similarity between the
products is that they both
have borders. On the Nat
Geo calendar there are black
borders, however I wanted
mine to be more creative.
I made my borders more creative by using
the pencil tool on Photoshop and drawing in
the grass as the bottom. Finally, I copied an
image from Google and edited the colour
overlay to black so that it was bolder.
There are lots of differences
between the products. For
example, the Nat Geo
showcases nearly all of the
images that feature
throughout the calendar. I
didn’t want to include this
technique because it is not as
exciting for the audience as
they already know what is
inside the calendar and may
not purchase it. Another
difference is that at the top
of the page there is a brand
name, logo, name of the
calendar and the year. At the
top of my calendar there is
only the name of the
calendar and the year. I
should have included my logo
at the top of the page so that
it looks more professional
and realistic. Another major
difference between the
products is the colour
scheme. My colour scheme is
purple, blue and green
whereas on the Nat Geo
calendar it is yellow and
black. These colours do not
have connotations to nature,
however they are eye-
catching.
One common technique that it used on a calendar cover is the
sponsors and brands at the bottom with information about the
manufacturer etc. This makes the calendar look more professional
and official. I was unsure of how to fit this on the cover as well as
what to include. Although this technique may have helped improved
the quality of my cover.
Technical Qualities- Inside Calendar
There are several similarities
and differences between these
two inside pages. One similarity
between them is that the
general layout and design is very
similar. Both pages have the
nature photographs at the top
of the page with the month
underneath. Then follows the
boxes with the dates. This
specific layout is traditional for a
calendar and looks structured
and professional. Another
similarity is the colour scheme.
They both have green, blue and
brown on the page and all these
colours have connotations to
nature. Blue has connotations
to the sky and water and green
has connotations to the earth,
grass and trees. Finally, brown
has connotations to the earth,
dirt and trees. This helps
indicate what the theme of the
calendar is all about.
There are more similarities between
the products than differences. One
difference between the pages is how
the photographs have been taken and
edited. The professional calendar
photograph is much better quality and
probably taken on a better camera. The
image has been edited in a different
style where the colours have been
toned down and deepened. It has been
edited this way to signify that it has
been taking in the autumnal season.
Whereas my photographs are not as
high quality but have also not been
edited in this style: I wanted my
pictures to look more colourful and
vibrant to stand out. Another difference
between the products is the calendar
on the right has information a the
bottom with smaller photographs. I did
not like this technique because I
wanted one large image on the page;
which is why I never used this
technique in production. My page is
filled with photographs and boxes
therefore if I included more images an
information it would look crowded and
messy.
The final similarity between the products is that the
boxes that begin or end in another month and shaded in
a lighter colour to signify the dates are not in that month.
I like this technique because it influences my calendar to
look more professional and realistic. Overall, I think both
calendars look very similar.
The final difference between the products is that I included some background shapes to fill
the space and make the calendar have connotations to the season. In spring and summer
there are butterflies; in autumn there are leaves and winter there are snowflakes. The
professional calendar does not do this which is why I think the background looks quite
boring and basic. Overall there are more similarities than differences.
Technical Qualities- Map
On the left is the map I
created myself on
Photoshop and on the
right is the professional
version that I found
online. One similarity
between the maps is the
way the floors are
labeled. For example,
they are titled ground
floor, floor 1 and floor 2.
This makes it easy for the
reader to understand and
navigate themselves
around the place. A
common technique that
is used on a map is a
colour code and key box
as this makes it much
easier to understand. I
copied this technique
because I thought it
would be incredibly time
consuming and difficult to
attempt to draw the
rooms to highlight what
each room was for. It
would be too small where
the reader could not see
it therefore this was the
easiest method.
Another similarity between the products is that the floors are shaded.
Each room is a lighter shade so that it looks more 3D. I copied this
technique so that my map did not look like a flat plan and appear
difficult to understand as it needs to be suitable for everyone.
Even though there
are lots of similarities
between the
products, there are
several differences.
For example, my
map has a title for
what it is a map for: ‘
Nature Photography
Exhibition Map’. This
gives the map much
more structure as
well as making more
sense to the reader.
Another difference
between the 2 is the
fact that I included
my brand logo at the
bottom of the page.
This does not only fill
empty space but also
highlight to the
reader once again
what the map is for
as the logo is
recognizable from
other products.
Overall the two maps share lots of similarities and differentiate as well. I think
that my map is not detailed enough and that is why it does not look
professional. The map on the right looks much better because it has more
shading and information. My map lacks information which means that the
reader and visitor of the museum may have a lot of questions.
Technical Qualities- Poster
There are numerous
similarities and differences
between both posters. One
similarity is the style of
poster. I wanted my poster to
look abstract so that it stands
out more and does not look
like every other nature
photography exhibition
poster. The Natural History
Museum poster follows this
style as well with one image
filling the entire page then
there are lines and boxes
framing the main focus of the
photograph. This makes the
poster stand out once again
and grab your attention.
Another similarity between
the products is the colour
scheme. On both posters
there is a dominant colour:
light pink. Even though pink
does not have connotations
to nature or photography, it
is a bright colour that stands
out against other colours
which is why I used this
technique to make my poster
stand out.
There are more differences
between the posters than
similarities. One major
difference is that the Natural
History Museum uses a
photograph as the
background. Even though I am
advertising a photography
exhibition, I did not want to
show any images because I
thought it would influence
more people to visit as they
don’t have any insight. Instead
I created a drawing of the
museum with my logo in the
middle which makes it more
abstract. Another difference is
the borders: At the bottom of
my page there is a grass and
flower border to highlight
what the images will feature.
However, the other poster
does not have any creative
borders which makes it look
more simple but sleek.
Another major difference is the font and text. On my poster, nature
is the largest word on the page to interest nature lovers. However,
on the other poster the largest boldest word is ‘evolve’ the name if
the exhibition then ‘wildlife’. My exhibition does not have a creative
name because I wanted the name to be simple and say exactly what
it will entail. The font type on the Natural History Museum is much
more simple and standard, whereas my font choice has a pattern
and is bold which grabs your attention. My font has more
connotations to nature whereas the other font is too basic to signify
a photography exhibition.
Technical Qualities- Guide Book
I spent a lot of time on the
guide book because I wanted
it to look as professional and
as realistic as possible. Once
again, there are more
differences than similarities
between the guide books.
One major difference
between the products is the
general layout. On my guide
book, the title is at the top of
the page then there is one
image filling the entire page.
My name and the bar code
then follows at the bottom.
On the professional guide
book, there are three images
on the cover with the title
and name of author in the
middle of the page. I like this
layout and tried to copy it,
however I realized that it was
not going to work with the
ideas that I had. Another
major difference is the
photographs themselves. My
picture is not very good
because I ran out of time to
take landscape shots which is
what I wanted.
Even though I edited the photograph to make it as
colourful and interesting as possible, the other
photographs on the other guide book are much
better. If I had more time, I would have taken a
photograph with a blue sky, and blue water with a
background to make it more interesting. Another
difference is that my guide book has a logo and a
tagline. The logo signifies the branding and
connects with the rest of my products. I wanted to
write a tagline to highlight what would be inside
the guide book and what aspiring photographers
could learn. The other guide book does not do this
because the page is already filled with
photographs to draw away attention.
One similarity is the colour
scheme. My guide book has
a consistent colour scheme
of blue, yellow and green.
These colours have
connotations to nature and
stand out on the
photograph. The
professional guide book has
a prominent colour on the
cover: blue. This helps
highlight to the audience
what the book is all about
and what is inside. Another
similarity is the editing
technique between the
photographs. The colours
are intensified so that they
are more vibrant. On my
photograph, I made the
yellow and blue brighter
and the other photographs
have increased the blue and
orange to make it more
colourful.
Technical Qualities- Portfolio
There are numerous similarities
and differences between the
two portfolios. In my opinion,
there are much more
differences. For example, my
portfolio has been created in a
completely different style. It
was not created for a website
purpose which is why the
information is at the side of the
photograph. Whereas on the
professional portfolio, you have
to click on the images to get
any information. Having the
information at the side of the
photographs takes up lots of
space which is why the other
portfolio has many more
pictures. I wanted to include at
least 7 images, however it was
not possible with my design.
The photographs on the
professional portfolio vary in
size and alternate between
portrait and landscape. This
makes the portfolio more
interesting than my portfolio
that only has five images that
are presented the same way.
One similarity between the
portfolios is the photography style.
My portfolio is based on macro
photography as I took all images
using a macro lens. Similarly, the
professional portfolio is all
extremely close up pictures of
wildlife or nature. Even though my
photographs are just of flowers,
both portfolios follow the same
theme. Another similarity is that all
the pictures have a border around
them to frame them. I copied this
technique to give my photographs
more structure to stand out more.
My borders are green to fit with the
colour scheme of green and blue.
However, on the professional
portfolio it follows a sleek and
classic black and white colour
scheme. The final similarity
between the portfolios is the colour
schemes. On nearly all the
photographs, there is a theme of
blue and green which have
connotations to nature. Neither of
the portfolios are portrayed on a
white background which makes the
colours in the photographs
enhanced.
The final difference between the portfolios is there is not a
logo or photographer name on the portfolio. On my
portfolio, there is a logo at the top to signify the brand that it
was created by ,( and to link it to my other products), and my
name is also featured in the title so the audience knows who
photographed and created the portfolio. The other portfolio
does not do this which means that the audience has to do
more research on the website therefore the information is
not as easily accessible.
Aesthetic Qualities- Calendar
I think the pages on the inside of
the calendar look good. I like
how the image is central and
large then the dates underneath
with the grass as the border. I
think elements of the calendar
pages were creative such as the
grass at the bottom and the
photographs themselves.
However, the layout itself was
not creative as I followed other
calendar designs. If I could
improve something on my
calendar pages it would be the
boxes as they vary in size and
boldness because I was using
different computers which had
different settings. I would keep
the boxes the same thickness
across all the months so that it
looks more professional. I would
improve this by making sure the
line was on the first setting with
the thickness on 2.
In my opinion, I think that the
calendar cover could be improved
if I had more time. I think that the
idea was creative of having three
images on the cover instead of
the traditional one or twelve.
However, I think it looks quite
simple. I like how I kept the grass
and flowers at the bottom just
like on the poster. I also like how I
created coloured boxes around
the images to frame them better
and make them stand out.
However, if I could improve my
calendar I would use different
images on the cover so that there
was a stronger colour scheme
that grabs your attention. One of
my strengths on my calendar
cover is that I chose my favourite
photograph that I have taken as
the main focus. Because it is
bright purple it stands out
however, it would work better
with a better colour scheme.
I am happy and proud of the photographs inside the calendar. I
took the images on my own camera whilst experimenting with
different settings and exposure as well as the shutter speed. I
have posted several images on to my photography account on
instagram which allowed me to receive feedback of how I could
improve my photography. In all my photographs, I used either
the Fibonacci ratio or the rule of thirds to help frame my images
better. This improved the quality massively and helped draw the
eye to main focus of the image.
When I was finalizing the the calendar pages, I added a few improvements to improve the quality and grade. To improve my calendar, I
incorporated symbols into the seasons. For example, in the spring and summer months I included butterflies behind the dates. In Autumn, I
included leaves and in winter I added snowflakes. This does not only fill empty space but also make the background much more interesting
and not as basic. I copied these symbols from the internet then edited the colour overlay to make them black just like the grass and
flowers.
Aesthetic Qualities- Poster
The poster is what I am most proud of
overall. I think the colour scheme is bright
and draws attention to the image. I tried a
new technique where I drew over my
photograph of the museum with the line
tool so that it looked like I had digitally
drawn the museum which makes the
poster look more abstract and art themed.
I like the large font because it stands out
and grabs your attention as well as having
connotations to nature due to the print
that is incorporated throughout the text.
Finally, I think the grass and the flowers at
the bottom are creative because it is
highlighting the theme of the exhibition
without showing photographs.
If I could improve the poster, I would try
to stick to the colour scheme of green and
blue. I would make the triangles blue and
green so that it connected with the other
products as the colours are not featured
on my other products. I would create a
shadow at the bottom of the museum
drawing so that it looked more realistic
and 3D.
One of the strengths of my poster is how creative it is. The font type helps signify the exhibition style and grab the audiences attention.
The bottom of the page is filled with grass which is another connotation to nature. And finally, the museum signifies the location as well
as highlighting that the exhibition will not just show my images, but other artists drawings and paintings. One of my weaknesses was not
following the colour scheme that is consistent across the other products. Another weakness would be that I did not make the lines on
the museum black and bold enough. This would result in the museum standing out more and also matching with the thickness of the
black on the rest of the page. Whilst creating the poster, I received lots of help because I was not happy with what I had created as it was
very colourful and filled with text. With help, I was shown how to make it stand out more and not look as plain and boring.
Aesthetic Qualities- Map
Overall, I do not think that my map
looks good because I think that it
requires lots of improvements. I do
not have time to restart my map which
is why I have to hand it in looking as it
does. I do not like it because it does
not look like a map. I tried to add
shading by making the rooms different
colours, however it did not make the
floors like 3D; instead they still look
flat. I tried to copy techniques from
other maps that I researched by
including a colour coded key which I
think made it easy to understand and
navigate. Because I can not draw, I did
not want to draw small subjects in the
rooms to signify what the room was
for which is why I included a coloured
square. The strength of my map is the
colour coding because it makes the
map easy to understand but it also
grabs the audiences attention so when
they visit the exhibition they are
shown a map to help assist them.
Another strength is that I included my
logo at the bottom. Incorporating the
logo filled lots of empty space as well
as highlighting to the audience the
brand of the map and connecting it to
other products, (guide book, poster,
calendar etc.).
There are lots of weaknesses on the
map. The first weakness is the colour
scheme. In my opinion there are too
many colours on the map. I should
have made the floors grey but with
different shading. Another weakness is
that the map looks like a flat plan and
not a map. I am not the best at
drawings therefore creating the map
was difficult for me. I could have made
another map that had a different point
of view/angle to make it more simple.
Another weakness was the amount of
time I spent on the production of the
map. I spent over a map trying to
research and make the map look as
good as possible. However, I should
have moved onto other production as
it massively slowed me down.
If I could improve my map, I would make the floors
the same colour but different shades. This would
make the map look more shaded and 3D and less
colourful and abstract. I would also change the font
that I chose. The writing that I wrote on the floors
and at the key should have been written in the font
‘jolly’ and not ‘moon flower’ as it is not bold
enough and is too small. In the future, I would
research more examples and look into the
production of maps to see what techniques they
used to edit the map to improve the quality. This
would allow my map to look more professional and
realistic.
Aesthetic Qualities- Portfolio
I am happy with the portfolio
because I wanted it to be a flower
theme. However, experimenting
with the macro lens allowed me
to focus more closely on the
flowers and photograph them
much better. This also gave me a
new creative style for my
portfolio: macro photography. I
struggled to come up with ways
to design the portfolio because I
wanted to showcase at least 5
photos with information
underneath them. Even though
the page is filled with text, I think
it does not look overwhelming or
boring as the photographs are
large and colourful.
I think that my portfolio is
creative because I tried a new
style of photography that was
challenging for me to
experiment with. I wanted the
page to look as creative as
possible. I did this by including
my logo in the top corners of
the page to signify it is my
brand. I edited the
photographs on Photoshop
using the camera raw filter to
make the colours brighter and
more vibrant.
One of my weaknesses on the portfolio is that I would have liked to include more photographs. I struggled to layout the portfolio where I
could include at least 7 photographs with information underneath. The font would have to be very small where it would no longer be
legible and the photographs would have to be too small where they do not stand out on the page. Instead I had to space out 5
photographs with the text surrounding. If I could improve my work, I would include many more photographs in the macro photography.
Another weakness on my portfolio is that it does not look exciting. It doesn’t grab your attention, therefore I would change the font, size
and colour of the body text so that it stands out more. One of the strengths of my portfolio is the photographs. I followed either the
Fibonacci ratio or the rule of thirds so the eye is naturally drawn to the inside of the flower then you gradually look around the image. The
inside of the flower tends to be in the centre box on the rule of thirds so it stands out. The rose bud is on the 3 line so that you eye is
drawn to the flower then the bud then the background.
Aesthetic Qualities- Guide Book
Overall, I am happy with the guide book. It
took a long time to prepare for the guide
book so I thought that I would run out of
time and not be able to complete it. I
decided to have a landscape background
with a blue sky and blue water, however I
did not have time to take more
photographs which I why I used this
picture. I think the guide book looks
creative because I incorporated my logo at
the top and spent a lot of time editing the
photograph. One strength about my guide
book is the general layout. For example, I
like the design of having a photograph as
the background, the title featuring at the
top with a tagline underneath. I then wrote
my name at the bottom with the bar code
because it is important information that
needs to be featured on the book but does
not need to be at the top with other
information. Another strength of the guide
book is how the photograph. Even though
it is not what I imagined it to look like, I am
happy with how it has been edited. I
enhanced the colours blue and yellow so it
was more vibrant and eye catching. The sky
was quite grey and cloudy therefore using
RGB curves I increased the blue to make
the photo look like it was taken in summer.
One of my weaknesses when creating the
guide book was the amount of time I gave
myself. I did not have time to take more
photographs that I intended on being the
cover which is why I had to look at
previous photographs I had taken and use
them. I only had two days to create the
guide book because it was right at the end
of production and the year. I would have
liked to have a photograph with water and
a nicer landscape background to make the
cover more interesting. If I could improve
my work, I would change the image. I
would also change the font type of
‘nature photography’ so that it looks more
creative and bold as it slightly blends in. I
think the cover is creative and is the best I
could have made it in the time I gave
myself.
The final strength on my guide book is the font
and text choice. I did not like the ‘zengo’ font
for the title like on other products because I
thought it was too bold and not easy to read.
Having the title in green blended in with the
grass too much and was not vibrant enough
which is why I chose the same blue shade as on
other products to make them look similar and
connected. The font I used for the title and
tagline was ‘jolly’ and ‘moon flower’.
Aesthetic Qualities- Practice Guide
BookThis is my practice cover for my guide book. I
had previously experimented with macro
photography and I thought that it might be
creative to have one of these images as the
cover. Whilst researching guide book covers, I
found that some images had black borders for
the titles. I do not like this cover at all which is
why I did not use it. One weakness is the
background image as it is too close and not
designed for the guide book purpose. Another
weakness of mine is the font choice and how it
has been layed out on the page. I do not like
the ‘zengo’ font at the top as it is hard to read
and does not stand out. I also do not like the
black border as it ruins the photograph and
distracts from it. The final weakness is the logo
at the bottom corner as you can not even see
it as it blends in with the background of the
photograph. I improved my work by recreating
my guide book with a different photograph
that was in a landscape photography style and
I took away the font type and the black border.
I think the idea for a macro photography
guide book was creative, however it did
not work. It was too close and detailed to
be the cover; it was taken for my portfolio.
My only strength on this first attempt at
the guide book is the actual photograph.
The photograph was taken on a special
macro lens to help get in closer with the
flower and get more detail in the picture. I
like how I edited the photograph because I
made the orange much more vibrant and
brighter to catch your attention. I also
edited in a vignette which made the focus
more on the inside of the flower as the
corners are black. I like the photograph
because I followed the Fibonacci ration
where the inside of the flowers are inline
with the beginning of the spiral where the
eye is then drawn across the rest of the
flower naturally.
I am glad that I restarted the guide book because I would not have been happy with this cover nor got a good enough grade.
I am missing several techniques to make the guide book look high quality. In the future, if I had the time I would create
practice versions experimenting with different layouts because it highlighted to me what I like and didn't like.
Audience Appeal
I think overall my products appeal to the target audience. My products are targeted at different age groups for example the calendar is
targeted at an older audience whilst the photography exhibition is targeted at anyone. The guide book is targeted at an older audience
because it acts as a free souvenir that you can take away from the exhibition. Whilst I was researching the audience profiles for nature
calendars, I found that the audience was 18-24 years old. I think my calendar appeals to this audience because the photographer and editor
is the age which means I am not a professional experienced photographer. This could result in the audience feeling more comfortable
purchasing the calendar as they can look at what other photographers their age are photographing as well as inspiring them to try new
techniques. My calendar also appeals to an older audience because it features a range of photographs of nature, flowers, wildlife and
landscape. My results from the questionnaire suggest that an older audience would pay between £6-£10 so that suggests that they are
paying for high quality images. I used my own camera as well as a camera from college with a macro photography lens, therefore I think that
the photographs featured on the calendar are high quality and edited so that they look better than the original.
The target audience for my nature photography portfolio was not aimed at any specific age range. I think that a younger audience would like
the nature photography portfolio because I learned about macro photography whilst working on this product. Therefore, younger less
experienced photographers may be introduced into a new spectrum of photography that they can experiment with for themselves. I wrote
information underneath the photograph of how I took the image, (on what settings), and how I edited it. Once again, this could be a teaching
method where inexperienced photographers learn new ways to edit their own images or play with the camera settings on their own
equipment. On the other hand, my portfolio can also appeal to an older audience because they may be interested in photography, (especially
macro photography), so they like looking at upcoming photographers work and offering feedback.
Audience Appeal
I think that my photography exhibition and poster will appeal to the target audience for many reasons. The target audience for my poster
was a younger audience aged as young as 12 above. This is because at the exhibition I have included a workshop and question and answer
session. This gives a younger audience an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to improve their own photography. The poster
can also appeal to an older audience because it features lots of connotations to nature themed photography which will interest
experienced photographers where they have the opportunity to look at other peoples work as well as asking questions to other
professionals. The results from my questionnaire suggest that the audience would like to see award winning photographs and workshops
as well as the interviews. My exhibition will appeal to this target audience because it includes all these qualities.
Finally, I think that my guide book appeals to my target audience because I followed several different techniques. The target audience for
my guide book varies as it was targeted at people who want to learn about photography and editing as well as equipment. This could be
aimed at younger beginners or older people who have more spare time and want to learn new techniques. However, overall the guide
book is targeted at an older audience because there are not activities inside the book or bright colours: it is just a book to learn from. I
have appealed to the audience by having a tagline explaining what the audience member can learn inside. Because there is only one
photograph on the cover, it looks more formal and professional and targeted at a mature audience. From my results from the survey,
the audience expected to receive a guide book for free from the exhibition. This means that it appeals to the audience because the guide
book will be free and the audience will learn lots of new things. I wanted the guide book to be accessible to everyone: not just
photographers that can afford high quality equipment etc.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• The product (calendar) looks very professional and all the colours work very well
together. The product has good audience appeal as the image captures the audiences
attention.
• The poster is very eye-catching as the font works well with the images. The text is very
clear to read and doesn’t fill up the page so there is more visual aspects for the
audience to look at.
• The portfolio has a good image to text ratio so the viewer wouldn’t get bored reading it.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• The calendar could do with some brighter colours as they are all quite pale.
• The poster could maybe have a different colour scheme.
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• I really like the photo that you have taken, I think the colours stand out perfectly, and I also really like the
our of focus shot that you have produced on the photo. I also like the font that you have used on your
calendar and the colours within it. The font stands out really well. Your ability to take photographs is out
the questions, this is really good! I also like the font that you have used within the boxes, I like the hand
written theme. I also like the grass (I think it’s grass..) that you have designed at the bottom, that looks
great. (Grass is meant to be Green0 this is sad grass.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• For improvements, I think it would be nice to see different months that have different
photographs along with them. I don’t think that this needs much improvement at all.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The photography in the calendars is very sharp, bright and
colourful. The images is in focus and is taken well. The poster
looks professional and sticks to a simple colour scheme which
doesn’t look out of place. There is also also a section explaining
how some of the photos are taken which is good. The poster
includes the time, data and location of the photography
exhibition.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product? The only improvement which I would suggest is
that the colours on the march calendar look overexposed.
This is due to the editing but is a simple fix.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
I agree when the audience says that they like the colour schemes because they are very eye catching
and colourful: they help draw attention to the products. Another response is that people like the
photographs and how they have been edited which I agree with because I am proud of my photographs
and how they look because they are unique and colourful.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
I disagree that the poster should have a different colour scheme because I think that the colours work
well and are eye catching. The blue and green colour scheme would not work on the cover which is why
I chose these colours. Having black font and black borders makes the poster much bolder. One feedback
said that the colours could have been brighter and more vibrant, however they would then not be easily
legible. Opposing this, another feedback said that the colours were overexposed and too bright. I
disagree with these statements because I think the colours are eye catching and easy to read.
Peer Feedback Summary
If I could make changes to my work based on my feedback I would change how I edited the photographs and the colours I chose
as a few people said that the colours were overexposed and too pale. Firstly, I would change the brightness of my photographs
so that they were not as bright. After that I would not enhance the vibrancy as much as I did as it made the colours too bright.
Then I would chose a darker blue and green as the font as it is slightly too bright. Because the colour scheme on the inside pages
are too bright, it influences the pages in general to look over exposed. Overall this is the only feedback I received from the
products, however comparing my products to the questionnaire answers, I would change a few things. For example, I would add
more information about the photographers that inspired me to create my own work. Firstly, I would at the exhibition I would
incorporate other photographers work so people can be open to other styles of photography. I did this by having a question and
answer hall with professional photographers, however it would be better with photographs to go alongside. Finally, I would add
another page to the portfolio where people can look at other peoples work.

Fmp evaluation

  • 3. Research- Calendar Strengths: One of the strengths of my research based around the Nat Geo calendar was the design on the cover gave me inspiration for my own product. On the Nat Geo calendar, there are 12 images on the cover which reveals all the photographs, however this helped me understand that I did not like this layout and wanted to try something else. Another strength of my research was the audience profile because this allowed me to see what the audience of the calendar enjoy and have as a profession. This helped with my product because the customers of the Nat Geo calendar are aged between 18 and 24 which means that my prediction was wrong. I thought that the calendar would be purchased and more interesting to an older audience, however young people who enjoy photography in their spare time are interested in the calendar because it gives them more inspiration for their own products. Another strength is that evaluating the calendar highlighted to me that I need to create a logo to feature across all my products so there is strong branding across all the products and the products become more recognisable. This has helped me with my product because I am creating several different products and I want them to be all connected therefore creating a logo of my own will increase the quality and make the products look more professional. The final strength of my research was that I was able to see the photographs that Nat Geo used on their calendar. This means that I could see any common colours, styles and type of shots as well as how the photographs are edited. Because professional photographers and editors work on the calendar, it highlighted to me what techniques interest a younger audience. This helped me with my product because I found that the photography style is similar throughout the all the images as well as the type of shot. There is a strong colour scheme on the calendar which highlighted to me that I have to have consistent techniques featured in each image so that it is all connected. The audience profile for Nat Geo calendar:
  • 4. Research- Calendar Weaknesses: One of the weaknesses of my research was that I only researched one product example of a calendar. I did not research other calendars and study their layouts, types of shots, colours etc. This would have allowed me to learn more techniques and broaden my knowledge when creating a calendar. This also lead to me quickly researching other designs for calendars during production as I knew that I did not want to follow the Nat Geo style. In the future, I would research more existing products so that I get to see alternate options as this narrowed my understanding. Another weakness was that I did not discuss why I wanted to focus on this specific calendar. I wanted to look at Nat Geo calendars because I personally think the quality of the photographs is very professional and high quality. I wanted to copy techniques to make my own calendar look just as good. Including this information into my research would have allowed me to focus on these specific areas in more detail and perhaps learn something new. My final weakness of my research was that I chose a calendar that was based on landscape photography. Even though my calendar will have some landscape images, the main theme is on nature and wildlife. This means that I did not get to see how Nat Geo photograph wildlife and flowers or how they edit the colours. This means that my work may be lacking several crucial techniques that improve photography. In the future, I would like to focus on the specific style of photography as well as the layout. Here are wildlife photography calendars by Nat Geo that I should have analyzed as well as the landscape photography calendar:
  • 5. Research- Map Strengths: One of the strengths of my research of the walkthrough was that it highlighted to me new techniques that I could use to make the map as easy to understand as possible. For example, creating a colour coded box makes the map much more simple because you can colour code where the toilets, stairs, cafeteria etc. is instead of attempting to draw it. This helped me with my product because it saved lots of time trying to draw all the rooms as well as small details within them to signify what the room was. Another strength of my research was that the example that I researched had an ariel view with different frames of viewpoint. This made the map quite confusing as well as not suiting all customers that visit the exhibition as it needs to be simple. This helped me with my product because I decided that I wanted it to be an ariel image, however it had to be much simpler, not following certain techniques on the example. These maps are better examples because they are designed flat and much more basic.
  • 6. Research- Map Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses is the same across all my research; I only studied one example of a map. This means that I did not get to look at other designs and layouts therefore I could not see how to make my map simple as I researched a complicated design. In my head, I knew how I wanted to layout the map therefore I should have researched a similar existing map to help me during my production. This effected my production because building the map was time consuming as I was unsure of how to start or how to make it look good. Once again I had to quickly research other existing products so that I could copy those techniques. Another weakness of my research was that I researched a map that was designed for an entire museum and not just one exhibition. This meant that I repeated this in my own work when it was supposed to focus on the exhibition. My map was intended to show you how to get there but also how the photographs would be projected. This disrupted my own production because I created a map for the museum which took up an entire week. It also disrupted production because I then had to add smaller detail for the exhibition which resulted in the map looking messy. The exhibition on the first floor is not very detailed as it is only signified by walls throughout the room. I should have included arrows signifying where you walk around and enter workshops etc. Because the map is a flat plan, it is very simple. However, it does not really look like a map because there is not a 3D element. I should have included more shading and heightened certain areas to make it look more realistic. Another improvement to my map would be adding more text and information. On existing products there is text near the bottom of the page therefore I should have incorporated this technique.
  • 7. Research- Poster Strengths: One strength of researching the National History Museum poster was that it gave me inspiration of what I would write on my own poster to advertise the exhibition. For example, the title of the event is in the centre of the page in the largest font size. This means that it grabs your attention and influences you to read what the poster is advertising. This research helped me with my own product because I knew how to layout the page so that the title of the event was central and large. Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses is that I only researched one product example which is not created in the style that I want. I knew that I wanted my poster to be more abstract with drawings on, therefore researching this poster was not very helpful because there is one photograph on the cover. If I could improve my research, I would not only look for another example but maybe research art exhibition posters instead as they may follow the same style. This did not effect my product much because I knew what I wanted the poster to look like even before research.
  • 8. Research- Guide Book Strengths: Researching examples of the guide book was very difficult because I struggled to find books for photography exhibitions. However, the guide book that I researched did help my product. For example, it highlighted to me that the least amount of font possible on the cover is the most effective as the main focus is on the image and the background. This helped me with my own guide book because I planned to write more on the cover, however minimising this makes the photograph much more effective. Another strength of my research was the colour scheme on the cover. The Natural History Museum has a blue and white colour scheme which is similar to my own colour scheme. This helped me with my product because I got to see an example layout and design using my colour scheme. Furthermore, this gave me inspiration about what I would include on the cover, what colour the font would be and what type of image would feature.
  • 9. Research- Guide Book Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses of my research was that the example that I analyzed was advertising a museum of natural history. This means that on the cover there was graphics of what a small section of the museum looks like. However, if I had researched an example of a photography guide book this would have been much more helpful as I could have seen how the text surrounded the image, how the photograph was edited and other important techniques. This affected my product because I did not know where to place the text where it stood out and was legible. This made the production of the guide book much longer. Another weakness of my research was that I did not discuss what I did not like about the cover. If I analyzed what I did not like on the cover I would highlight why I avoid these techniques. For example, I did not like how the behind the image there was a blurred background. I thought the design was too boring and not eye catching. Therefore, I should have discussed what I would change on the cover and what techniques I would like to copy. This affected my product because I did not know what type of photograph to feature on the cover and how to edit it so that it stood out and the cover would look fun influencing the customers of the exhibition to pick up a copy of the guide book. Below are some photography guide book examples that I should have researched.
  • 10. Research- Portfolio Strengths: I enjoyed researching different portfolios because I found it interesting and inspiring to look at other photographers work. When researching portfolios, I looked at different professional photographers websites where there was a gallery of their work under different styles. One of my strengths of this research was that I was looking at examples of professional work. Therefore I could see specific techniques that I would like to copy so that my own photography would be high quality. This helped me with my own photography because I got to expand my knowledge and learn about the Fibonacci ratio and the rule of thirds. I also experimented with new ways to edit my photography on Photoshop to make my photographs look much better. Finally, it helped me with my product because I was allowed to use a new camera and macro lens which is designed for nature photography. This means that my product quality was majorly improved resulting in some good photographs. Another strength of my research was that I analysed each style of photography that I would like to use on my products. I looked at examples of this style and analysed the image. I discussed the colour scheme, type of shot and much more. This helped me with my product because whilst taking the photographs, I thought about the colours that I wanted in the image as well as the type of shot and the angle. My photography at the beginning of the rotation versus at the end:
  • 11. Research- Portfolio Weaknesses: The major weakness of my research is that I did analyze one specific portfolio and annotate it. Instead I looked at lots of different examples online, they copied some images and analyzed them. If I could improve this, I would annotate the portfolio as a whole; how the photographs are layed out on the page, where the information is, colour schemes etc. This affected my product because I was unsure of how to design the portfolio. I did not know how to include as many images as possible as well as writing about the photograph and how I edited it, (also the equipment). In the future, I would analyze one image as well as the entire portfolio so that I could expand my knowledge on portfolios as well as photography. Another weakness of my research was that I did not read the information that was provided on the websites. On some of the portfolios I looked at, there was information about the photographs which would have been helpful to read as it would allow me to know what writing style and information to include on my own portfolio. In the future, I would make notes on the information so I would have better knowledge on what to write myself. This affected my product because I wanted to write about the location of the image, what camera was used and how it was edited. I was unsure of how to write this underneath all the images as I ran out of space.
  • 12. Research- Exhibition Strengths: One of my strengths on my research was that I researched a photography exhibition that I visited before. A few years ago I went to the Beverley Exhibition because it had award winning photographs. Visiting the exhibition allowed me to discuss what interested me in going to exhibition. Whatever these techniques were; I would include at my own product. This helped me with my exhibition because I could include workshops, award winning photographs and question and answer sessions to include everyone. Another strength of my research was that I chose an example that is a nature photography style which is what I want my own exhibition to include. This means that I could analyse how they were portrayed and set out in the exhibition as well as what type of photographs are on display. My research helped me with my product because it allowed me to design a map of how to layout the exhibition in the best way possible. The final strength of my research was that it gave me lots of inspiration for my own exhibition. For example, at the side of the photographs there is a plaque of information about the photograph: who it was photographed by, where and the equipment used. This helped me with my product because I decided I wanted to use this technique across several of my products. I thought that this would make my exhibition look much more sleek and full of information.
  • 13. Research- Exhibition Weaknesses: One of my weaknesses in my research was that I did not build a character profile of the type of people that attend photography exhibitions. This would help my product because it would give me more knowledge about my audience and how to interest them. I created a survey which gave me an insight, however the more information about my audience the better. In the future, I would create an audience profile to expand my knowledge and understanding. This affected my product because I spent lots of time creating the survey, however I was only able to ask 10 questions. Having an audience profile would give me more insight into their hobbies, profession and age. I knew how to interest a younger audience, however it was more difficult finding ways to interest an older audience which is why I included a question and answer session. Another weakness of my research was that I should have researched multiple exhibitions. This would have highlighted to me different ways to display the photographs as well as other techniques such as background music. To improve this, I would visit another near by exhibition and see how the pictures are displayed as well as what activities there are and how the information is shown. Another exhibition I should have analyzed: York Museum Gardens Photography Exhibition.
  • 14. Planning Planning each individual product was very difficult and time consuming. I also experienced several difficulties along the way such as downloading fonts. I chose three fonts from Dafont.com and analysed why I wanted to use them, however when it came to production that would not install because they were corrupt. This means that I then had to chose different fonts that did not have this font type but also that I liked and thought would fit with the products. I then researched about framing my photographs using the Fibonacci ratio and the rule of thirds. This was a major strength in my planning because I got to take practice shots using these techniques which resulted in my photographs massively improving in quality. This technique helped my product because my photographs have now improved in quality and look more professional. After that, I practiced writing out what I was going to include on my map, poster etc. However, this was one of my weaknesses as I spent a long time deciding on what I would write but when it came to production it would not all fit on the cover or look good. In the future, I would write down ideas of what I want to include but then design it on the page to make sure it would all fit. Even though this didn’t effect production too much, it resulted in me not coming up with designs and information that was crucial to the product such as designing a logo. I then began designing layouts for the products. For the portfolio, I decided where to place the photographs and where to include the information. One of my weaknesses was the plan for the portfolio because I could only include 5 of my photographs on the portfolio and I would have liked to include at least 7. In the future, I would improve this by researching more examples of nature photography portfolios so I could see how they are structured. This effected my product because I had to make the font quite small so that the images were large enough to stand out. In the future, I would create alternate layout plans so I had more options to follow and look at. Finally, I discussed what resources I would need, what possible health and safety issues could possibly happen as well as a contingency plan. Completing these forms allowed me to address what could possibly go wrong with the equipment or production and how I would resolve this problem. Filling in the pages was helpful, however I did not go back to look at the pages when I experienced a problem to see how to resolve it. One problem I experienced was that my camera could zoom in close enough to the flowers therefore there was lots of background noise. To resolve this I borrowed a camera an lens from college which was designed for macro photography.
  • 15. Time Management Managing was very difficult. I had challenged myself to creating several different products that would take up a lot of time. Throughout the rotation I experienced lots of problems. For example, during the holidays I had lots of homework to do which included improving my power points as well as carrying on with production. I attempted to download Photoshop, however it was not working therefore I came into college during the week off so that I could catch up with production. Once we were back at college, we had several days off because of exams. However, to resolve this I came in on the mornings to carry on with production. At the beginning of the production week, I spent too long on the map and poster which resulted in me being very far behind producing my other products. Overall, I think I managed my time well because I gave myself a sufficient amount of time to edit my photographs and each individual product. I did not want to rush my production because I wanted to be happy with the outcome. However, I was slightly rushed when we came back after the holidays. I completed my work on time, however if I was given more time I would improve my PowerPoint's more and spend more time editing photographs and my products. If I had more time I would improve my map as I am not so happy with the result. I would also edit a few things on my calendar cover and portfolio to improve the quality. One specific improvement would be making sure that my logo features across all my products so the audience recognises the brand.
  • 16. Technical Qualities- Calendar There are several similarities and differences between these 2 products. One similarity is the bar code is in the bottom right on both pages. I included a bar code in the bottom of my calendar so that it looks more professional and increases the quality. Another similarity between the products is that the images on the cover are of wildlife and nature. My calendar includes photographs of wildlife and nature because I thought it would make the cover much more interesting to highlight the variety of image style that is featured throughout the calendar. On the Nat Geo calendar there are lots of photographs of wildlife, however there are some landscape and flower shots incorporated throughout. The final similarity between the products is that they both have borders. On the Nat Geo calendar there are black borders, however I wanted mine to be more creative. I made my borders more creative by using the pencil tool on Photoshop and drawing in the grass as the bottom. Finally, I copied an image from Google and edited the colour overlay to black so that it was bolder. There are lots of differences between the products. For example, the Nat Geo showcases nearly all of the images that feature throughout the calendar. I didn’t want to include this technique because it is not as exciting for the audience as they already know what is inside the calendar and may not purchase it. Another difference is that at the top of the page there is a brand name, logo, name of the calendar and the year. At the top of my calendar there is only the name of the calendar and the year. I should have included my logo at the top of the page so that it looks more professional and realistic. Another major difference between the products is the colour scheme. My colour scheme is purple, blue and green whereas on the Nat Geo calendar it is yellow and black. These colours do not have connotations to nature, however they are eye- catching. One common technique that it used on a calendar cover is the sponsors and brands at the bottom with information about the manufacturer etc. This makes the calendar look more professional and official. I was unsure of how to fit this on the cover as well as what to include. Although this technique may have helped improved the quality of my cover.
  • 17. Technical Qualities- Inside Calendar There are several similarities and differences between these two inside pages. One similarity between them is that the general layout and design is very similar. Both pages have the nature photographs at the top of the page with the month underneath. Then follows the boxes with the dates. This specific layout is traditional for a calendar and looks structured and professional. Another similarity is the colour scheme. They both have green, blue and brown on the page and all these colours have connotations to nature. Blue has connotations to the sky and water and green has connotations to the earth, grass and trees. Finally, brown has connotations to the earth, dirt and trees. This helps indicate what the theme of the calendar is all about. There are more similarities between the products than differences. One difference between the pages is how the photographs have been taken and edited. The professional calendar photograph is much better quality and probably taken on a better camera. The image has been edited in a different style where the colours have been toned down and deepened. It has been edited this way to signify that it has been taking in the autumnal season. Whereas my photographs are not as high quality but have also not been edited in this style: I wanted my pictures to look more colourful and vibrant to stand out. Another difference between the products is the calendar on the right has information a the bottom with smaller photographs. I did not like this technique because I wanted one large image on the page; which is why I never used this technique in production. My page is filled with photographs and boxes therefore if I included more images an information it would look crowded and messy. The final similarity between the products is that the boxes that begin or end in another month and shaded in a lighter colour to signify the dates are not in that month. I like this technique because it influences my calendar to look more professional and realistic. Overall, I think both calendars look very similar. The final difference between the products is that I included some background shapes to fill the space and make the calendar have connotations to the season. In spring and summer there are butterflies; in autumn there are leaves and winter there are snowflakes. The professional calendar does not do this which is why I think the background looks quite boring and basic. Overall there are more similarities than differences.
  • 18. Technical Qualities- Map On the left is the map I created myself on Photoshop and on the right is the professional version that I found online. One similarity between the maps is the way the floors are labeled. For example, they are titled ground floor, floor 1 and floor 2. This makes it easy for the reader to understand and navigate themselves around the place. A common technique that is used on a map is a colour code and key box as this makes it much easier to understand. I copied this technique because I thought it would be incredibly time consuming and difficult to attempt to draw the rooms to highlight what each room was for. It would be too small where the reader could not see it therefore this was the easiest method. Another similarity between the products is that the floors are shaded. Each room is a lighter shade so that it looks more 3D. I copied this technique so that my map did not look like a flat plan and appear difficult to understand as it needs to be suitable for everyone. Even though there are lots of similarities between the products, there are several differences. For example, my map has a title for what it is a map for: ‘ Nature Photography Exhibition Map’. This gives the map much more structure as well as making more sense to the reader. Another difference between the 2 is the fact that I included my brand logo at the bottom of the page. This does not only fill empty space but also highlight to the reader once again what the map is for as the logo is recognizable from other products. Overall the two maps share lots of similarities and differentiate as well. I think that my map is not detailed enough and that is why it does not look professional. The map on the right looks much better because it has more shading and information. My map lacks information which means that the reader and visitor of the museum may have a lot of questions.
  • 19. Technical Qualities- Poster There are numerous similarities and differences between both posters. One similarity is the style of poster. I wanted my poster to look abstract so that it stands out more and does not look like every other nature photography exhibition poster. The Natural History Museum poster follows this style as well with one image filling the entire page then there are lines and boxes framing the main focus of the photograph. This makes the poster stand out once again and grab your attention. Another similarity between the products is the colour scheme. On both posters there is a dominant colour: light pink. Even though pink does not have connotations to nature or photography, it is a bright colour that stands out against other colours which is why I used this technique to make my poster stand out. There are more differences between the posters than similarities. One major difference is that the Natural History Museum uses a photograph as the background. Even though I am advertising a photography exhibition, I did not want to show any images because I thought it would influence more people to visit as they don’t have any insight. Instead I created a drawing of the museum with my logo in the middle which makes it more abstract. Another difference is the borders: At the bottom of my page there is a grass and flower border to highlight what the images will feature. However, the other poster does not have any creative borders which makes it look more simple but sleek. Another major difference is the font and text. On my poster, nature is the largest word on the page to interest nature lovers. However, on the other poster the largest boldest word is ‘evolve’ the name if the exhibition then ‘wildlife’. My exhibition does not have a creative name because I wanted the name to be simple and say exactly what it will entail. The font type on the Natural History Museum is much more simple and standard, whereas my font choice has a pattern and is bold which grabs your attention. My font has more connotations to nature whereas the other font is too basic to signify a photography exhibition.
  • 20. Technical Qualities- Guide Book I spent a lot of time on the guide book because I wanted it to look as professional and as realistic as possible. Once again, there are more differences than similarities between the guide books. One major difference between the products is the general layout. On my guide book, the title is at the top of the page then there is one image filling the entire page. My name and the bar code then follows at the bottom. On the professional guide book, there are three images on the cover with the title and name of author in the middle of the page. I like this layout and tried to copy it, however I realized that it was not going to work with the ideas that I had. Another major difference is the photographs themselves. My picture is not very good because I ran out of time to take landscape shots which is what I wanted. Even though I edited the photograph to make it as colourful and interesting as possible, the other photographs on the other guide book are much better. If I had more time, I would have taken a photograph with a blue sky, and blue water with a background to make it more interesting. Another difference is that my guide book has a logo and a tagline. The logo signifies the branding and connects with the rest of my products. I wanted to write a tagline to highlight what would be inside the guide book and what aspiring photographers could learn. The other guide book does not do this because the page is already filled with photographs to draw away attention. One similarity is the colour scheme. My guide book has a consistent colour scheme of blue, yellow and green. These colours have connotations to nature and stand out on the photograph. The professional guide book has a prominent colour on the cover: blue. This helps highlight to the audience what the book is all about and what is inside. Another similarity is the editing technique between the photographs. The colours are intensified so that they are more vibrant. On my photograph, I made the yellow and blue brighter and the other photographs have increased the blue and orange to make it more colourful.
  • 21. Technical Qualities- Portfolio There are numerous similarities and differences between the two portfolios. In my opinion, there are much more differences. For example, my portfolio has been created in a completely different style. It was not created for a website purpose which is why the information is at the side of the photograph. Whereas on the professional portfolio, you have to click on the images to get any information. Having the information at the side of the photographs takes up lots of space which is why the other portfolio has many more pictures. I wanted to include at least 7 images, however it was not possible with my design. The photographs on the professional portfolio vary in size and alternate between portrait and landscape. This makes the portfolio more interesting than my portfolio that only has five images that are presented the same way. One similarity between the portfolios is the photography style. My portfolio is based on macro photography as I took all images using a macro lens. Similarly, the professional portfolio is all extremely close up pictures of wildlife or nature. Even though my photographs are just of flowers, both portfolios follow the same theme. Another similarity is that all the pictures have a border around them to frame them. I copied this technique to give my photographs more structure to stand out more. My borders are green to fit with the colour scheme of green and blue. However, on the professional portfolio it follows a sleek and classic black and white colour scheme. The final similarity between the portfolios is the colour schemes. On nearly all the photographs, there is a theme of blue and green which have connotations to nature. Neither of the portfolios are portrayed on a white background which makes the colours in the photographs enhanced. The final difference between the portfolios is there is not a logo or photographer name on the portfolio. On my portfolio, there is a logo at the top to signify the brand that it was created by ,( and to link it to my other products), and my name is also featured in the title so the audience knows who photographed and created the portfolio. The other portfolio does not do this which means that the audience has to do more research on the website therefore the information is not as easily accessible.
  • 22. Aesthetic Qualities- Calendar I think the pages on the inside of the calendar look good. I like how the image is central and large then the dates underneath with the grass as the border. I think elements of the calendar pages were creative such as the grass at the bottom and the photographs themselves. However, the layout itself was not creative as I followed other calendar designs. If I could improve something on my calendar pages it would be the boxes as they vary in size and boldness because I was using different computers which had different settings. I would keep the boxes the same thickness across all the months so that it looks more professional. I would improve this by making sure the line was on the first setting with the thickness on 2. In my opinion, I think that the calendar cover could be improved if I had more time. I think that the idea was creative of having three images on the cover instead of the traditional one or twelve. However, I think it looks quite simple. I like how I kept the grass and flowers at the bottom just like on the poster. I also like how I created coloured boxes around the images to frame them better and make them stand out. However, if I could improve my calendar I would use different images on the cover so that there was a stronger colour scheme that grabs your attention. One of my strengths on my calendar cover is that I chose my favourite photograph that I have taken as the main focus. Because it is bright purple it stands out however, it would work better with a better colour scheme. I am happy and proud of the photographs inside the calendar. I took the images on my own camera whilst experimenting with different settings and exposure as well as the shutter speed. I have posted several images on to my photography account on instagram which allowed me to receive feedback of how I could improve my photography. In all my photographs, I used either the Fibonacci ratio or the rule of thirds to help frame my images better. This improved the quality massively and helped draw the eye to main focus of the image. When I was finalizing the the calendar pages, I added a few improvements to improve the quality and grade. To improve my calendar, I incorporated symbols into the seasons. For example, in the spring and summer months I included butterflies behind the dates. In Autumn, I included leaves and in winter I added snowflakes. This does not only fill empty space but also make the background much more interesting and not as basic. I copied these symbols from the internet then edited the colour overlay to make them black just like the grass and flowers.
  • 23. Aesthetic Qualities- Poster The poster is what I am most proud of overall. I think the colour scheme is bright and draws attention to the image. I tried a new technique where I drew over my photograph of the museum with the line tool so that it looked like I had digitally drawn the museum which makes the poster look more abstract and art themed. I like the large font because it stands out and grabs your attention as well as having connotations to nature due to the print that is incorporated throughout the text. Finally, I think the grass and the flowers at the bottom are creative because it is highlighting the theme of the exhibition without showing photographs. If I could improve the poster, I would try to stick to the colour scheme of green and blue. I would make the triangles blue and green so that it connected with the other products as the colours are not featured on my other products. I would create a shadow at the bottom of the museum drawing so that it looked more realistic and 3D. One of the strengths of my poster is how creative it is. The font type helps signify the exhibition style and grab the audiences attention. The bottom of the page is filled with grass which is another connotation to nature. And finally, the museum signifies the location as well as highlighting that the exhibition will not just show my images, but other artists drawings and paintings. One of my weaknesses was not following the colour scheme that is consistent across the other products. Another weakness would be that I did not make the lines on the museum black and bold enough. This would result in the museum standing out more and also matching with the thickness of the black on the rest of the page. Whilst creating the poster, I received lots of help because I was not happy with what I had created as it was very colourful and filled with text. With help, I was shown how to make it stand out more and not look as plain and boring.
  • 24. Aesthetic Qualities- Map Overall, I do not think that my map looks good because I think that it requires lots of improvements. I do not have time to restart my map which is why I have to hand it in looking as it does. I do not like it because it does not look like a map. I tried to add shading by making the rooms different colours, however it did not make the floors like 3D; instead they still look flat. I tried to copy techniques from other maps that I researched by including a colour coded key which I think made it easy to understand and navigate. Because I can not draw, I did not want to draw small subjects in the rooms to signify what the room was for which is why I included a coloured square. The strength of my map is the colour coding because it makes the map easy to understand but it also grabs the audiences attention so when they visit the exhibition they are shown a map to help assist them. Another strength is that I included my logo at the bottom. Incorporating the logo filled lots of empty space as well as highlighting to the audience the brand of the map and connecting it to other products, (guide book, poster, calendar etc.). There are lots of weaknesses on the map. The first weakness is the colour scheme. In my opinion there are too many colours on the map. I should have made the floors grey but with different shading. Another weakness is that the map looks like a flat plan and not a map. I am not the best at drawings therefore creating the map was difficult for me. I could have made another map that had a different point of view/angle to make it more simple. Another weakness was the amount of time I spent on the production of the map. I spent over a map trying to research and make the map look as good as possible. However, I should have moved onto other production as it massively slowed me down. If I could improve my map, I would make the floors the same colour but different shades. This would make the map look more shaded and 3D and less colourful and abstract. I would also change the font that I chose. The writing that I wrote on the floors and at the key should have been written in the font ‘jolly’ and not ‘moon flower’ as it is not bold enough and is too small. In the future, I would research more examples and look into the production of maps to see what techniques they used to edit the map to improve the quality. This would allow my map to look more professional and realistic.
  • 25. Aesthetic Qualities- Portfolio I am happy with the portfolio because I wanted it to be a flower theme. However, experimenting with the macro lens allowed me to focus more closely on the flowers and photograph them much better. This also gave me a new creative style for my portfolio: macro photography. I struggled to come up with ways to design the portfolio because I wanted to showcase at least 5 photos with information underneath them. Even though the page is filled with text, I think it does not look overwhelming or boring as the photographs are large and colourful. I think that my portfolio is creative because I tried a new style of photography that was challenging for me to experiment with. I wanted the page to look as creative as possible. I did this by including my logo in the top corners of the page to signify it is my brand. I edited the photographs on Photoshop using the camera raw filter to make the colours brighter and more vibrant. One of my weaknesses on the portfolio is that I would have liked to include more photographs. I struggled to layout the portfolio where I could include at least 7 photographs with information underneath. The font would have to be very small where it would no longer be legible and the photographs would have to be too small where they do not stand out on the page. Instead I had to space out 5 photographs with the text surrounding. If I could improve my work, I would include many more photographs in the macro photography. Another weakness on my portfolio is that it does not look exciting. It doesn’t grab your attention, therefore I would change the font, size and colour of the body text so that it stands out more. One of the strengths of my portfolio is the photographs. I followed either the Fibonacci ratio or the rule of thirds so the eye is naturally drawn to the inside of the flower then you gradually look around the image. The inside of the flower tends to be in the centre box on the rule of thirds so it stands out. The rose bud is on the 3 line so that you eye is drawn to the flower then the bud then the background.
  • 26. Aesthetic Qualities- Guide Book Overall, I am happy with the guide book. It took a long time to prepare for the guide book so I thought that I would run out of time and not be able to complete it. I decided to have a landscape background with a blue sky and blue water, however I did not have time to take more photographs which I why I used this picture. I think the guide book looks creative because I incorporated my logo at the top and spent a lot of time editing the photograph. One strength about my guide book is the general layout. For example, I like the design of having a photograph as the background, the title featuring at the top with a tagline underneath. I then wrote my name at the bottom with the bar code because it is important information that needs to be featured on the book but does not need to be at the top with other information. Another strength of the guide book is how the photograph. Even though it is not what I imagined it to look like, I am happy with how it has been edited. I enhanced the colours blue and yellow so it was more vibrant and eye catching. The sky was quite grey and cloudy therefore using RGB curves I increased the blue to make the photo look like it was taken in summer. One of my weaknesses when creating the guide book was the amount of time I gave myself. I did not have time to take more photographs that I intended on being the cover which is why I had to look at previous photographs I had taken and use them. I only had two days to create the guide book because it was right at the end of production and the year. I would have liked to have a photograph with water and a nicer landscape background to make the cover more interesting. If I could improve my work, I would change the image. I would also change the font type of ‘nature photography’ so that it looks more creative and bold as it slightly blends in. I think the cover is creative and is the best I could have made it in the time I gave myself. The final strength on my guide book is the font and text choice. I did not like the ‘zengo’ font for the title like on other products because I thought it was too bold and not easy to read. Having the title in green blended in with the grass too much and was not vibrant enough which is why I chose the same blue shade as on other products to make them look similar and connected. The font I used for the title and tagline was ‘jolly’ and ‘moon flower’.
  • 27. Aesthetic Qualities- Practice Guide BookThis is my practice cover for my guide book. I had previously experimented with macro photography and I thought that it might be creative to have one of these images as the cover. Whilst researching guide book covers, I found that some images had black borders for the titles. I do not like this cover at all which is why I did not use it. One weakness is the background image as it is too close and not designed for the guide book purpose. Another weakness of mine is the font choice and how it has been layed out on the page. I do not like the ‘zengo’ font at the top as it is hard to read and does not stand out. I also do not like the black border as it ruins the photograph and distracts from it. The final weakness is the logo at the bottom corner as you can not even see it as it blends in with the background of the photograph. I improved my work by recreating my guide book with a different photograph that was in a landscape photography style and I took away the font type and the black border. I think the idea for a macro photography guide book was creative, however it did not work. It was too close and detailed to be the cover; it was taken for my portfolio. My only strength on this first attempt at the guide book is the actual photograph. The photograph was taken on a special macro lens to help get in closer with the flower and get more detail in the picture. I like how I edited the photograph because I made the orange much more vibrant and brighter to catch your attention. I also edited in a vignette which made the focus more on the inside of the flower as the corners are black. I like the photograph because I followed the Fibonacci ration where the inside of the flowers are inline with the beginning of the spiral where the eye is then drawn across the rest of the flower naturally. I am glad that I restarted the guide book because I would not have been happy with this cover nor got a good enough grade. I am missing several techniques to make the guide book look high quality. In the future, if I had the time I would create practice versions experimenting with different layouts because it highlighted to me what I like and didn't like.
  • 28. Audience Appeal I think overall my products appeal to the target audience. My products are targeted at different age groups for example the calendar is targeted at an older audience whilst the photography exhibition is targeted at anyone. The guide book is targeted at an older audience because it acts as a free souvenir that you can take away from the exhibition. Whilst I was researching the audience profiles for nature calendars, I found that the audience was 18-24 years old. I think my calendar appeals to this audience because the photographer and editor is the age which means I am not a professional experienced photographer. This could result in the audience feeling more comfortable purchasing the calendar as they can look at what other photographers their age are photographing as well as inspiring them to try new techniques. My calendar also appeals to an older audience because it features a range of photographs of nature, flowers, wildlife and landscape. My results from the questionnaire suggest that an older audience would pay between £6-£10 so that suggests that they are paying for high quality images. I used my own camera as well as a camera from college with a macro photography lens, therefore I think that the photographs featured on the calendar are high quality and edited so that they look better than the original. The target audience for my nature photography portfolio was not aimed at any specific age range. I think that a younger audience would like the nature photography portfolio because I learned about macro photography whilst working on this product. Therefore, younger less experienced photographers may be introduced into a new spectrum of photography that they can experiment with for themselves. I wrote information underneath the photograph of how I took the image, (on what settings), and how I edited it. Once again, this could be a teaching method where inexperienced photographers learn new ways to edit their own images or play with the camera settings on their own equipment. On the other hand, my portfolio can also appeal to an older audience because they may be interested in photography, (especially macro photography), so they like looking at upcoming photographers work and offering feedback.
  • 29. Audience Appeal I think that my photography exhibition and poster will appeal to the target audience for many reasons. The target audience for my poster was a younger audience aged as young as 12 above. This is because at the exhibition I have included a workshop and question and answer session. This gives a younger audience an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to improve their own photography. The poster can also appeal to an older audience because it features lots of connotations to nature themed photography which will interest experienced photographers where they have the opportunity to look at other peoples work as well as asking questions to other professionals. The results from my questionnaire suggest that the audience would like to see award winning photographs and workshops as well as the interviews. My exhibition will appeal to this target audience because it includes all these qualities. Finally, I think that my guide book appeals to my target audience because I followed several different techniques. The target audience for my guide book varies as it was targeted at people who want to learn about photography and editing as well as equipment. This could be aimed at younger beginners or older people who have more spare time and want to learn new techniques. However, overall the guide book is targeted at an older audience because there are not activities inside the book or bright colours: it is just a book to learn from. I have appealed to the audience by having a tagline explaining what the audience member can learn inside. Because there is only one photograph on the cover, it looks more formal and professional and targeted at a mature audience. From my results from the survey, the audience expected to receive a guide book for free from the exhibition. This means that it appeals to the audience because the guide book will be free and the audience will learn lots of new things. I wanted the guide book to be accessible to everyone: not just photographers that can afford high quality equipment etc.
  • 35. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? • The product (calendar) looks very professional and all the colours work very well together. The product has good audience appeal as the image captures the audiences attention. • The poster is very eye-catching as the font works well with the images. The text is very clear to read and doesn’t fill up the page so there is more visual aspects for the audience to look at. • The portfolio has a good image to text ratio so the viewer wouldn’t get bored reading it. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The calendar could do with some brighter colours as they are all quite pale. • The poster could maybe have a different colour scheme.
  • 36. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? • I really like the photo that you have taken, I think the colours stand out perfectly, and I also really like the our of focus shot that you have produced on the photo. I also like the font that you have used on your calendar and the colours within it. The font stands out really well. Your ability to take photographs is out the questions, this is really good! I also like the font that you have used within the boxes, I like the hand written theme. I also like the grass (I think it’s grass..) that you have designed at the bottom, that looks great. (Grass is meant to be Green0 this is sad grass. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • For improvements, I think it would be nice to see different months that have different photographs along with them. I don’t think that this needs much improvement at all.
  • 37. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – The photography in the calendars is very sharp, bright and colourful. The images is in focus and is taken well. The poster looks professional and sticks to a simple colour scheme which doesn’t look out of place. There is also also a section explaining how some of the photos are taken which is good. The poster includes the time, data and location of the photography exhibition. • What improvements could have been made to the product? The only improvement which I would suggest is that the colours on the march calendar look overexposed. This is due to the editing but is a simple fix.
  • 38. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? I agree when the audience says that they like the colour schemes because they are very eye catching and colourful: they help draw attention to the products. Another response is that people like the photographs and how they have been edited which I agree with because I am proud of my photographs and how they look because they are unique and colourful. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? I disagree that the poster should have a different colour scheme because I think that the colours work well and are eye catching. The blue and green colour scheme would not work on the cover which is why I chose these colours. Having black font and black borders makes the poster much bolder. One feedback said that the colours could have been brighter and more vibrant, however they would then not be easily legible. Opposing this, another feedback said that the colours were overexposed and too bright. I disagree with these statements because I think the colours are eye catching and easy to read.
  • 39. Peer Feedback Summary If I could make changes to my work based on my feedback I would change how I edited the photographs and the colours I chose as a few people said that the colours were overexposed and too pale. Firstly, I would change the brightness of my photographs so that they were not as bright. After that I would not enhance the vibrancy as much as I did as it made the colours too bright. Then I would chose a darker blue and green as the font as it is slightly too bright. Because the colour scheme on the inside pages are too bright, it influences the pages in general to look over exposed. Overall this is the only feedback I received from the products, however comparing my products to the questionnaire answers, I would change a few things. For example, I would add more information about the photographers that inspired me to create my own work. Firstly, I would at the exhibition I would incorporate other photographers work so people can be open to other styles of photography. I did this by having a question and answer hall with professional photographers, however it would be better with photographs to go alongside. Finally, I would add another page to the portfolio where people can look at other peoples work.
