The theme of my project was a mixture of music journalism and classic fanzines. Initially, I planned to
create a documentary, however, I found early on that the subject that I had chosen to do would have
worked better as a fanzine then a documentary. As soon as I had realised this, I took it upon myself to
start researching fanzine. Looking at classic 70s fanzines attracted me even more to create a fanzine. I
liked the fact that there were no rules or guidelines that they had to follow as they were publishing them
on their own, so nothing was off the table. They would use crazy, explicit art and tackle controversial
topics just because they could. I liked this a lot, wanting to create my own. Although, mine was a lot
more reserved then theirs were! If I were to do this project again, I would have let myself go more and go
a bit more crazy.
For research, I used a mixture of books and online resources to help me get a wide range of different
sources. I mainly used books for research about the history of fanzines and for the structural layout for
production, and would use the internet for the context. For example, I would read articles about Lorde
done by NME or Rolling Stone for research context which was the easy part of my research. I created a
survey for audience research, so I could understand what people liked when reading print media and
what colour schemes they prefer. This helped me develop my project when it came to replacing certain
pictures that didn't fit right or when I wanted to choosing the colouring of the adverts, I was able to read
this research and match it to what the audience would want then combine it with what I liked.
During production, I often referenced my research along the way to keep the fanzine on track and so I
could see the facts i needed to include in my articles.
Throughout my project, I was constantly re-editing pages and changing the structure of my pages. I did
about 7 different formats of my fanzine, some were very similar to each other, others were very different.
This helped my develop my ideas and the overall fanzine, as by the end, the first copy and final copy
were so different to each other. The final copy was visibly at a higher standard then the original copy.
This helped me develop my work and my skills simultaneously.
The outcome of this project was a 14 page fanzine about Lorde. B the end of the project, I think it came
out well. I like how the final product turned out. It came out better then I thought it would and I like the
changes I made.

This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the experience. This will help gain a understand of how your
personal feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
I wavered a bit before the project as it didn't know if my idea would work out the way I wanted it to, but
after a few weeks into the project, I finally saw it start to come together.
I think my project development helped me refine my idea because I could visualise the changes to the
project and watch it come together. As the project came along, I found that my idea started to get
sharper and create a more solid focus then at the start, as i was able to choose appropriate topics for
the articles and the structure i would use in production.
I felt happy and relieved as it meant that I could crack on with my evaluation and hand all my work in on
time. IT also meant that could stop worrying about re-editing pages over again
Evaluation
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The evaluation may include some
similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it is important to be honest.
Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of the success of the project
How did you feel about the project before you started? *
What do you think about your project development and how did it help you to refine your
idea? *
* If working in a group, how do you think other people felt?

I liked how my final product came out. After all the hard work i put into my work, being able to see the
final product was very satisfying. I particularly liked the cut-out style of editing that i chose to do on the
cover and thorughout the rest of the fanzine.
The challenges i faced was keeping consistency with the editing style of my project. In the early copies
of my project, the pages didn't match up as much as they could have. This meant i went back and
changed anything i didn't like or if i thought they didn't fit. This benefitted my project, as by the end, all
my pages looked presentable and matched up with each other.
The bad points were probably the fact that i didn't allow myself to go fully creative in editing and
production, so my fanzine was a bit more reserved then the ones i had researched. If i would do it again,
i would change the way i approached this project, with a closed mind, and allowed myself be extremely
creative with my work.

I think that my final product was good, but i feel as if i could have been even more creative and followed
my research a bit more harsher and create a crazy 70s style fanzine that would have been fun to create.
It would have meant that i would have had more creative control, leaving nothing off the table during
production.
I think that i hit my target audience pretty well, as i kept my audience research survey at hand during
production so i could see what elements i should have included in my fanzine that would appeal to the
audience. As someone who is in my target audience, i think that i would read it if i was presented with it.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make sense of what happened in the project. You should
demonstrate how your decisions informed the project development and the success of the outcome.
The project was a success, as it showed my development of skills and how my work evolved through the
project. i think the style of the cut-out effect i used on the cover turned out really well and i will definitely
use this style in future projects. i was also able to improve my familiarity with programs such as
InDesign and Photoshop which is very helpful, as the skills are transferrable for different projects.
The elements that did go well was probably structuring the articles, which was harder then i thought it
would be. Originally, i chose to edit the articles in Photoshop but switched to InDesign later on in the
production process. This changed the quality of my work quite a bit, as it made the editing more visual
and i could shape the text boxes around the pictures that i used.
Justify your rating above? What is your opinion of your final piece? What elements do you
think are successful and why?
How well would your design appeal to the target market?
In what ways was the overall project a success? *
What elements did not go well and why? *

In the future, i think that i will allow myself to be more creative when it comes to production, rather then
to stick to what i know. This means that i can create more interesting work and be able to develop my
skills in a range of different subjects. This can be applied to many different media platforms which will
help me create lots of different projects at a high standard.
Through this project, i was able to learn about new media platforms and how people used to create
these and communicate with their readers. This showed me different methods that could be used when
it comes to marketing a product. This project also taught me that media doesn't have boundaries and
those who are more creative and self expressive with their work make the most interesting products.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and identify ways you could develop.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio?
What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings?
What would you do differently in the future and why? *
What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the future to improve your
project? Also, what knowledge from academic literature and professionals has helped and
why? *

As i have said before, i would definitely be more creative and let my ideas develop and expand more the
n i did in this project. This would make my products more interesting and possibly have a higher
standard of production.
To develop my skills more, i could watch YouTube videos and read up about Media Theory so i could
include them into my projects. This would mean that i could include more messages into my work that
could be harder to understand at first watch.
A personal attribute that i can use for myself is to set myself certain tasks for each day and allow
myself more relaxed time for the entire production time. This means that i could create a higher
standard of work in the same amount of time, but have a more relaxed process, instead of creating it
quickly and having to do it again multiple times.
