Film Magazine Questionnaire Results
1. FILM MAGAZINE QUESTIONNAIRE
Results
1. Are you…?
Male [ ] 14 Female [ ]6
The majority of the people who took this questionnaire were male. This is because my target
audience is aimed mostly at males.
2. How old are you?
......................... 16 4 17 9 18 7
As the questionnaire was taken in college, it was hard to get people of a more varied age range. As
you can see, everyone who took the questionnaire was between the ages of 16 and 18. It was hard
to get hold of teachers as they were busy but the teachers in the media department don’t fit into my
target audience demographic anyway so it would have been pointless to ask them. Although not
ideal with only the 3 ages, it isn’t too bad because they still fit into my desired target audience
demographic.
3. How often do you buy a film magazine?
Weekly [ ] 5 Fortnightly [ ] 3 Monthly [ ] 10 Never [ ]2
From the answers given to this question, it seems logical to release my magazine once a month. This
is because exactly half of the people who took the questionnaire said that they buy film magazines
monthly.
4. If you do, what film magazine do you buy?
Empire [ ] 13Total Film [ ]5Rotten Tomatoes [ ] 2 Boxoffice [ ] 0
Other (please specify) * + ……………………………………………………………………………………….0
From this question you can see that Empire is the most popular film magazine with my demographic.
I probably could have predicted this anyway, as Empire and Total Film are the two main film
magazines in the country. Thanks to the questionnaire, I now have Empire as the main inspiration
when creating my magazine.
5. Which articles do you like to read about the most?
Interviews [ ] 12Reviews [ ] 5Sneak peeks [ ]3
Other (please specify) * + ……………………………………………………………………………………….0
2. From this question I found out that over half of the people who filled in my questionnaire look
forward to interviews more than anything else in film magazines. This means that I must make the
interview section an extremely important and focal part of my magazine, meaning I do my best in
making it the most crucial part (by providing enough images and eye catching designs in order to
draw the reader in).
6. Do you buy any non-film related magazines?
Yes [ ] 17 No[ ]3
It is really obvious from this question that people also like to purchase other magazines. This means
that I must try really hard in order to make my magazine so good that they decide to put their hands
in their wallets for FILM:A, rather than spending their money on a music magazine, for example.
7. If yes, what type of magazines do you buy?
……………………………………………………………………………………….
Music 8 Celebrity/Gossip 4 Football 3 Lifestyle (Take a Break, etc) 2
As predicted, music magazines are my biggest competition. Music takes up a big part of people’s
lives and due to the fickle nature of most music fans, there is always going to be a new artist or band
for them to drool over. This means I have to make sure my magazine provides a great insight into
the interviewee’s life, as well as providing other great features and great designs, in order to
persuade a potential buyer to choose FILM:A over another magazine from a different genre.
8. How often do you go to cinema?
Weekly [ ] 3 Fortnightly [ ] 2 Monthly [ ] 7 Never [ ] 0
Other (please specify) [ ] ……………………………………………………………………………………….
Several times a year (no real pattern) 8
This question didn’t really narrow down how often people like to go to the cinema in all honesty.
Cinema tickets have become so pricey these days that people can’t go as often as they used to.
However, my magazine will be a benefit for cinema starved people for several reasons. It could
possibly persuade people to go to the cinema more. It could fill the void of not going to the cinema
by reading it. It could make people think about saving their money when they see a film being
written about in the magazine that is due for release at the cinemas in, say, a few months’ time.
9. How much would you pay for a film magazine?
£1.00-£1.99 [ ] 4 £2.00-£2.99 [ ] 11 £3.00-£3.99 [ ] 3 £4.00-£4.99 [ ] 0
£5.00 or more [ ]2
According to the results of this question, most people prefer to spend between £2.00 and £2.99 for a
film magazine. This means that I must make my magazine cost roughly the same as that. If I don’t, it
could swing either way. On one hand, if it is cheaper, people may believe the quality to be much less
3. than another magazine because they may think “it can’t be very good if it’s so cheap”. On the other,
if you make it too expensive, it will alienate potential buyers as they may think “well I’m not paying
that much for an unproven magazine, it’s not worth it”. Finding the right balance is important so I
think I will opt for a £2.50 price tag.
10. Would you prefer to read a magazine about specifically British films or other countries
too?
British [ ] 9Other countries [ ]11
This question returned answers that were almost 50/50. Some people prefer to only read about
British cinema, while others want to only read about other countries (maybe they want to read all
about Hollywood, or Bollywood, or obscure art house films from around the globe). I have decided
to keep the magazine predominantly British, however not discarding other countries and cultures
too. This is because I am tired of movie magazine about Hollywood where the biggest story is how
Jennifer Aniston is again single. I instead have decided to incorporate all cultures and countries into
the mag by focusing on how British people in the movie business are doing around the globe.
Whether it is an actor, a director, a producer, a screenwriter, whoever - we can see how they are
getting on wherever they are - starring in a big Hollywood franchise, carving out good roles in
Bollywood, taking part in an Australian movie, for example .
