1. PITCH
For my Final Major Project on the course I have decided to create a magazine,
specifically a film magazine. I have chosen to do this because I plan on pursuing a
career in journalism and continuing media studies at university – should I get there.
I have a big interest in film so feel comfortable when writing about it. All in all, this
has been an enjoyable project.
The target audience demographic is aimed at males - late teens and early adults. I
have chosen this because, from research, I have found out that film magazines are
predominantly aimed towards this demographic. It also helps that I myself are part
of this age range because I feel my writing will relate to people of a similar age so will
be easy for me to write (compared to children or adults). The colour scheme, font
choice and images will also reflect the demographic.
I created a questionnaire and managed to get 20 people from around college to fill it
out. This really helped with influencing my decisions in relation to demographic,
price range, how often the magazine is put on sale, what type of features to include
and what competition I may face.
I have created a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread featuring a
Q&A article with a made up actor. I decided that the front cover, in order to fit in
perfectly with the demographic (rather than being too vibrant, attracting children or
too dull, attracting adults), that I will only include one photo on the front cover. It
will be large though and take up the majority of the space, surrounded by cover lines
(not too many, not too few) in order to attract any potential buyers. I decided to have
a red and gold colour scheme. Red is usually a colour that is linked with males. The
reason for the gold was to suggest that my magazine is the best. All pages stick to the
colour scheme and also the font. The font is sophisticated, with a silver glow on the
letters, which gives it a classy look. I made the decision of only taking photographs of
one person, using him for the front cover, the contents page (letting you know where
to find his interview) and of course, the double page spread.
I haven’t been too heavily influenced by any existing magazine; however the designs
of Empire and Q did provide small influences which helped me create the mag.
