The document outlines a 4-part math lesson on number sense and algebra. It begins by introducing the concept of distributing multiplication with unknown variables. Examples are shown of distributing terms like 14x and 6x. The goal is to rewrite expressions in fully distributed form, like 6(x)(4) + 6(x)(4). This helps demonstrate how to manipulate algebraic expressions before students encounter more complex problems.

OTF Connect Webinar - Exploring Measurement and the 4-Part Math LessonKyle Pearce
Ontario Teachers Federation (OTF) Connect Webinar Session: Exploring Measurement and the 4-Part Math Lesson Slide Deck. Delivered via webinar on March 9th, 2015.
A graphical representation of all the properties of multiplication. This is the foundation for algebra. Unfortunately most students have poor conceptual understanding and therefore turn to rote learning math. And that's where the disaster begins.
Multiplication -- More Than Repeated Addition and Times Tables.pdfChris Hunter
Multiplication is repeated addition... but it also means so much more than that! In this workshop, you will explore several fundamental meanings of this operation (e.g., equal groups, arrays and areas, how a quantity is “stretched,” etc.) through rich tasks that address each of these meanings. Also, you will explore and discuss relationships between the “basic facts.” More importantly, you will learn how to help your students see that these relationships extend to other types of numbers that they come across in BC’s intermediate and middle years mathematics curriculum (e.g., two-digit whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, etc.).

Digging Deep Into Ratios and Proportional Reasoning in the Middle Grades - NC...Kyle Pearce
Ratios and proportionality have a complex history and connect with many concepts in the curriculum, not always in a consistent fashion. Facilitators and participants will explore the fundamental ideas of ratios and proportional relationships to understand their development, contexts, and roles in the middle-school curriculum based on the learning from a symposium of teachers, mathematicians, and mathematics educators held in April 2017.

Making Math Moments That Matter - OAME 2017 PresentationKyle Pearce
What makes a memorable math moment?
Is it a real world task? Is it relevant to your students? Is it media-rich or delivered in 3 acts?
We believe it is much more than that.
Join Jon Orr and Kyle Pearce to help tear apart a math lesson to uncover the components that lead to more memorable math moments during each class.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
