The document analyzes BBC Radio Humberside's 1pm news broadcast hosted by Phil White. The target audience is those aged 35+ and the presenter aims for an informal yet clear delivery. News stories last 1:30-2 minutes to keep the audience engaged. The order of stories follows news values like impact and relevance to local listeners. Music and jingles are chosen to match the target audience and brand the station. Analyzing this broadcast provided lessons for the student's own radio show regarding format, style, and engaging an equivalent target audience.
2. General Information
The show that I will be analysing is BBC Radio Humberside. The news broadcast starts
at 1pm and is presented by Phil White. The mode of address for the radio show is an
informal and friendly manner as he wants the audience to feel relaxed while
listening to his radio show. The presenter also has good pronunciation of words so
they are clear for the audience to hear and understand.
The target audience for BBC radio Humberside is around 35+ as it is an informative
radio show discussing not only local news put also global news that would interest a
more mature audience.
3. Codes and Conventions
The presenters voice is very clear, loud and has a consistent speed this is done so
the audience can have a clear understanding of what is being said throughout the
broadcast.
The presenters style is quite informal but also has a very good pronunciation of words
and doesn’t use a lot of slang also to help the audiences understanding and also to
fit in with the target audience of the broadcast.
The music used in the broadcast has been chosen to fit in with the target audience
and the theme of the show and it is soft, soothing music, this is so the audience feel
relaxed when listening to the broadcast.
The broadcast uses pre recorded interviews to attract the audiences attention as it
gives different views of the news story rather than just the presenters views alone.
The broadcast also uses headlines for each of the news stories this has been done to
grab the audiences attention rather than just saying the full story from the
beginning.
4. The length of the segments
The length of each of the stories is around 1:30 to 2 minutes long. This is so
the news stories cover all the required and interesting elements of the
particular stories while still keeping them short and sweet as if they
become to long winded the audience will become bored and may tune
into a different station.
5. Covered news stories
New mobile technology means Humberside police can spend more time in their
communities, Two men are jailed for their part in an armed robbery and Big weekend
for Grimsby’s strictly come dancing stars.
The stories have been placed in this order due to the news values involved with each
story:
the first story involved has threshold as it is a large event and affects a lot of people
therefore more people will be interested and more likely to be reported also it has
meaningfulness which means it involves people nearby therefore is more likely to
people reported
The second news story involves personalisation which means people are interested in
people especially if the story is about crime as the people want to see the right action
of justice taken.
The third story also involves personalisation as it is about a Grimsby trio on strictly come
dancing so therefore people will be interested as it involves local people on a
worldwide television programme.
6. The Jingle
The jingle is an upbeat but formal jingle which informs the audience of the
name of the radio and where the radio can be accessed. This has been
done to make sure the jingle sticks into peoples head which therefore
could attract an bigger audience and to also let them know that they
don’t just have to listen in the car but then have also different ways to
listen such as TV and Online.
7. My radio Broadcast
I think analysing this radio broadcast has shown me what is necessary to
have in a successful broadcast and how it is all linked in with attracting an
audience and meeting a target audiences needs.
My radio broadcast is rather similar to BBC Radio Humberside as we have
similar target audiences and we mainly focus on news stories as well so
analysing BBC Radio Humberside has given me ideas and put an image in
my mind of how we need to meet the target audiences need but while
keeping it short and sweet to keep the audience listening.
