Competitive User Experience Intelligence: A PrimerBeverly Freeman
Analyzing your competition can be quite informative and motivating. Brands compare themselves based on strategies, market share, and feature sets, but what about the user experience? This presentation discusses the unique characteristics of competitive analysis from a UX perspective, ways to think about “the competition” beyond the obvious, and methods for competitive analysis. As a bonus, it also includes frameworks for going beyond basic usability comparisons, and common pitfalls to avoid.

UXPA 2023: Learn how to get over personas by swiping right on user rolesUXPA International
This session walks through the concept of user roles as an alternative to personas as a means to generate and disseminate user insights for product development teams. We will describe the tools and methods used to create a research database organized by user roles, along with examples and short exercises to help attendees think through user roles within their own context.
By the end of the session, attendees should be aware of tools and approaches for:
Organizing user research information in a database
Disseminating user role information to product and design teams
Managing a user roles database as part of a long term UX Research program
If you’re ready to ditch personas but don’t know how, this session is for you!
User research: Uncovering compelling insights through interviewsSteve Portigal
Interviewing users is undeniably one of the most valuable and commonly used user research tools. Yet sometimes we forget that it’s a skill we need to learn, because it’s based on skills we think we have (talking or even listening) and it’s not taught or reflected on.
In this workshop, we’ll consider how to frame the problem, when to use research in the design process, and the tactics for setting up a successful study. We will focus in detail on the interview itself, reviewing detailed techniques for listening and asking questions, then conclude with an engaging exercise to bring these best practices to life.
This workshop will show you how to:
Integrate mixed methods of research into solving a problem.
Develop increased empathy, a critical facet to meaningful interviews.
Derive useful results from interviews once you get participants to open up.
A 4 hour workshop as a follow up to the "What is UX?" presentation.
Group exercises designed to get people thinking about how UX skills are applied to their daily digital work.

[Yow! 2019] 3 insights from 4 years at SpotifyJason Yip
Thinking back over my 4 years at Spotify, I see 3 main insights:
1. Aligned autonomy is an ongoing struggle;
2. Building teams in the context of high growth require different assumptions;
3. Consulting companies are generally better at forming high-performing teams fast.
Some think working remotely is a terrible setting that takes control away and let's employees stay at home and be useless. Others find that remote work increases overall productivity and lowers the need to micromanage.
And both sides might be correct as remote work, like all other structures, work really well for some and make others crazy.
The only thing that we can say for certain is that telecommuting is increasingly popular and there are problems you need to face to make it work.
User experience can be drastically elevated by combining data science insights with user-based insights from research. Data analytics on its own can make themes and correlations difficult to explain and to provide accurate recommendations. For example, themes identified via large global surveys and usage data can be better understood with UX insights from focused user research, such as user interviews and/or cognitive walkthroughs. This presentation will highlight the complimentary nature of data science and UX and will focus on the benefits of bringing the two disciplines together. This will be buttressed with practical examples of enterprise projects and applications that combined data and skills from the two disciplines, guidance on how the two disciplines can better work together, and the skills needed to improve as a UX professional when working with data science teams.

Effective Digital Diary Studies / UXPA Webinar May 2016Sara Cambridge
Diary studies are one of the few research methods that allows people to report their in-the-moment experiences, but their usefulness has been limited by the difficulty in getting people to remember to carry them around and fill them out. Mobile phones have breathed new life into diary studies since people are already using them in short spurts throughout their day. However designing a study that collects relevant data can be tricky.
This is the lecture Dr Igor Calzada delivered on Ethnography in order to tackle the issues regarding data analysis in qualitative research in addition to the writing process of ethnographic method. That was delivered as a mean to achieve social innovation projects.
One of the shortcomings of many user interviews is the vast gulf between what people think they do versus what they actually do, not to mention what they may have forgotten having done. Fortunately, new research tools are filling that gap by allowing users to quickly provide feedback from their phone right after they use a product, allowing for the capturing of rich, emotional details. These tools are breathing new life into a traditional research tool, the diary study.
This talk share the best practices I’ve developed for designing a digital diary study that collects relevant and insightful data. It will be framed by examples from a recent diary study exploring how people use their fitness trackers (Fitbit, Jawbone Up, etc). Attendees will come away with not only an understanding of how much rich data can be collected this way, but with the basic knowledge needed to execute their own digital diary studies.

Systems Thinking - Web à Québec - May 2022Boon Yew Chew
In modern times, both signal and noise overwhelms us—pandemic, wars, climate change, yet another platform redesign—complexity has finally caught up, and we've no choice but to deal with it.
But where do we begin with complexity when there's so much to think of? A systems view might help us unravel the mess, connect the right dots, and eventually getting along with the change.
That's what this talk is about - a peek into the world of systems thinking, and what it can teach us about embracing and navigating overwhelming things.
Presented at Web à Québec, 24 May 2022.
Reading across a diverse range of topics is a good sign of maturing craft and designers. Boon's obsession with design and the human condition has led him to discover often unconventional but powerful perspectives through books. He will share how some of these books have influenced and shaped him as a designer, and talk about how that has supported his work with complex problem spaces.
I pulled together some broad perspectives and thoughts from working on chatbots the last six months into this talk I gave at UX Live conference on October 2017.
Chatbot interaction design — IxDA London July 2017Boon Yew Chew
Now that chatbots are seeping into the mainstream, interaction designers are starting to receive briefs to design and improve chatbot conversational experiences on apps, websites, and more.
That begs the question: What is interaction design for chatbots?
These are some thoughts from my recent work writing UX guidelines and recommendations for a large high-street client. I'll address some basic thinking and approaches to designing chatbot experiences, focusing on practical rather than future-forward applications.
Visual thinking for service design — CanUX November 2016Boon Yew Chew
The success of service design involves an organisation's ability to restructure itself towards the design and delivery of services in a meaningful, impactful way. Visual thinking provide a powerful means for diverse teams to work through complexity. This workshop introduces visual thinking as an approach to solve service design problems, involving methods like rapid visualisation, visual sensemaking, touchpoint sketching, rich pictures, and service posters.
