Susan took this class because she needed one more class to become a full-time student. She was interested in learning about using technology like iPods to aid learning. She discovered her learning preferences are active/reflective, sensing, visual/verbal balanced toward visual, and sequential/global balanced toward sequential. She explored using iPods, microblogs, and multimedia as learning tools and found games and multimedia most engaging. She plans to continue strategies like outlining and spacing repetition and leverage technologies like iPods and social media in the future.
2. MY MOTIVATION
What motivated me to take this class was due
to the fact that I needed one more class to
become a full time student. I stumbled upon
ITEC 299 and the name, How 2 Lrn w ur iPod,
immediately caught my attention. I read the
class description and was interested in what it
had to offer so I decided to enroll in this class.
4. LEARNING PREFERENCE
• It was interesting to find out my learning preferences
•
•
•
•
•
because I never considered what kind of learner I was.
For the active and reflective, I scored a 7 with a
moderate preference towards the reflective side.
I scored a 7 towards sensing for the sensing and intuitive
category.
As for the visual and verbal, I scored a 5 leaning towards
the visual side.
Lastly, for the global and sequential group, I scored
sequential-3 which meant I am well balanced on the two
sides but a little more toward the sequential side.
With the class coming to an end, I felt that my learning
preference did not really change; I still prefer to use my
current preferences.
5. THOUGHTS ON LEARNING
PREFERENCES
• I think it is important to know your learning style
because it will help you improve your way of learning
and know how to understand the material better.
Since everyone has a different learning preference,
the teacher would not be able to accommodate to
everyone’s needs so it would be best to know what
your learning style is and apply it through the
course.
• After knowing my learning preferences, I realized
what my strength and weakness were and strived to
improve my weaknesses. It would be nice if I were
well balanced on both sides, that way, learning
would be easier in different environments.
6. LEARNING PATHWAY
• The learning pathway I chose in the
beginning of class was Learning Sage where I
would explore the different technologies.
• As someone who is not tech savvy, I believe I
will broaden my knowledge of different
technologies as a Learning Sage by the end
of the class.
8. ACTIVITIES
• The activity that helped me get a broader understanding
of using technology to learn was the level one activity. By
looking at the PowerPoint and watching the screencast, I
was able to get a basic understanding of how that
specific technology works and how I could use it to learn.
• The activities that helped me get a deeper understanding
were the level two and level three activities because I
had the chance to use the technology to see what was
effective and what was not. The level three activities
gave me the opportunity to apply the technology in my
daily life, like, using my iPod to record lectures and help
me study.
• The activity that worked best for learning with others is
when people would response to each other’s topic. I
thought reading people’s responses and engaging in the
discussion helps to get your questions answered and to
get feedback.
9. TOP 3 TECHNOLOGIES
• iPods and mp3
The first technology I explored was the iPods and mp3 players
which accommodated my verbal learning. Since I already
own an iPod, I thought it would be a good opportunity to
further explore the technology and use its features to improve
my learning. I started using my iPod to record lectures,
particularly for my three hour classes, so I can playback the
audio to help me review for exams and to make sure that I
didn’t miss anything in my notes. It was really helpful in my
learning because I was able to pay more attention to the
professor’s lecture and not have to worry about missing any
information.
10. TOP 3 TECHNOLOGIES
• Microblogs
This technology surprised me the most because I didn’t
expect it would be useful when it comes to researching. It
accommodated my visual, verbal and active learning
styles. When I was evaluating the strategies, I had the
opportunity to take advantage of the search system on
Twitter and Tumblr to search various tags and determine
whether it was helpful or not. It is helpful to some extent
because you can easily scan through the posts and
sometimes you would find links to articles regarding the
topic you’re researching on.
11. TOP 3 TECHNOLOGIES
• Multimedia
Multimedia had graphics and sound that helped me connect
with the subject as well as allowing me to actively participate
with the software. Most of strategies that I explored were fun
and interactive. It accommodated my visual, verbal, active
and sequential learning styles.
For example, I had the opportunity to virtually participate in a
hip replacement surgery and see how the surgery was done.
The instructions were given to me verbally which made it easy
to follow and understand the basics of the surgery even
though I never had prior knowledge to it before.
12. EXPERIENCE WITH DIFFERENT
TECHNOLOGIES
• Games and multimedia were the most interesting as
learning tools because they were fun and interactive. It
accommodated to my learning preferences the best.
• The technology that surprised me the most as a learning
tool was microblog. I had always thought it was only used
as a way to communicate small messages with friends. It’s
helpful because you can find various articles or opinions
when you search up a tag related to your topic.
• The technology that doesn’t seem to work as well is social
bookmarking because sometimes the links don’t work.
Although it is good for getting a quick access to a
website, it’s not a guarantee that the site will always be
there.
13. PHYSIOLOGICAL FACTORS
• I have integrated physiological factors into my
learning practice by getting the essential amount of
sleep and eating healthier.
• I will continue to manage my schedule better in
order to get at least 8 hours of sleep so I would not
feel drowsy throughout the day. I will make sure not
to skip any meals and eat more fruits and vegetables
to enable a healthier lifestyle.
• By doing so, it will make me feel more energized
throughout the day and improve my cognitive
functioning which will help my brain’s ability to
acquire and process information.
14. THE FUTURE
• To use learning strategies and technologies that are
•
•
•
•
effective to my learning.
The learning strategies I will continue to use after this class
are outlining for note taking, and spacing and repetition
for studying.
I plan to continue to use iPods & mp3 players and
podcast for learning because they are easy to access
since most of the time I won’t have access to a computer
or internet when I’m outside.
I will continue to integrate physiological factors into my
learning practice, such as getting the essential amount of
sleep and eating healthier.
I will taking advantage of the resources available to me,
such as social networking sites(Facebook), to interact and
get help from other students taking the same course.
15. AS A LEARNING SAGE…
• I believe I was successful in obtaining a
broader knowledge of more technologies
because I learned of different ways to use
technology to my advantage, whereas
before, I did not consider using them to
help me with my learning.
• I hope to use my knowledge of different
technologies to further improve my
learning.
