TheIndianCottonFederationhasestimatedarecordcottoncropof406lakhbales(170kgeach)forthe2014-15season.TheestimatesfortheOctober'14toSeptember'15period,werearrivedattheboardmeetingheldhereonNovember22,ICFPresidentJThulasidharansaid.Gujaratwilltopthelistwith125lakhbales,followedbyMaharashtra85lakh,Telangana45lakh,Karnataka36lakh,Seemandhra25lakhbalesandHaryana24lakhbales,Yarnpriceswerestableduringthelastoneweek.Inthelastthreedaysthepriceswereupwardduetoseasonaldemandandbriskexportbooking, comparedtolasteightweeksduringwhichthepriceshadbeencontinuouslydecliningduetolowernewseasoncottonprices.
Withathirdoftheirvegetablesandfruitsgoingwasteduetospoilage,farmersareturningtostart-upssuchasEcozen, ColdStar,PrometheanandCoolifyforprovidingaccesstosolarandhybrid-poweredcoldstoragesolutions.EcozenSolutions, startedin2010byIITKharagpuralumnusDevendraGuptaalongwithVivekPandeyandPrateekSinghal,offerssolar- cum-hybridcoldstoragetofarmersinruralIndia."Theproductworksonsolarpowerandusesthermalstorageastheenergyback-up.Thecostofthesolutiondependsonthecommoditytobestored.Normally,afruitfarmershouldbeabletorecoverthecostwithinthreeyearsandearnatleasttwiceofwhatheiscurrentlyearning,"saidGupta.Sincehorticulturalcommoditiesareperishableandthereisnostorage,farmersareforcedtoselltheirproduceatthrowawaypricesduringharvesttime,saidGupta,addingthattherehasbeenpricefluctuationofmorethan200percentincertaincommodities.

TendersareinvitedbyGOVERNMENTOFANDAMANANDNICOBARISLANDfortransportationandhandlingofsugarfortheyear2014-2015.Openingdateoftendershasbeenfixedat15thDecember,2014.AspertheISMAreport,sugarproductioninthecountryfor2014-15(till15thNov,2014)standoutat5.6lakhtonsasagainst4.6lakhtonesduringthesameperiod.Sofar,thedatacollectedwasfrom141sugarmillsmostlyoperatinginMaharashtra,KarnatakaandGujaratwhilecrushingprocessisstillpendinginstateslikeUttarPradesh.U.Pgovt.declaredcaneSAPofRs280/quintal(normalvariety),Rs290/quintal(earlyripeningvariety)andRs275/quintal(latevariety)formarketingyear2014-15;whicharesimilartotheratefixedlastyear.Thegovt.hadalsomadeitcompulsoryforthemillerstopaythefirstinstallmentofRs240/quintalwithin14daysofprocurementwhiletheremainingamountneedstobepaidwithinthreemonthsofcompletionofcrushing.
