Chapter Two
2. Over all internship experience
2.1. Joining of the company
I joined Al Haramain Company for Commerce & Contracting, Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia on 4th august 2014. The project manager Mr. Ahmed Yahya assigned me with
the site engineer on the three of their on-going projects.
2.2. Section of the company I have been work
My hosting company is working on several projects in Saudi Arabia. I was appointed in
Al-Baha region projects, a city which is 400km away from Jeddah.
The projects I was appointed are as following:
a. Souq Al Mikhwa Road Asphalt
b. Sanaia Link Road
c. Wadi Al Shaqra Lik Road
Our hosting company was a contractor it has so many responsibilities. First the
accountant compute bid for their drawing(architectural drawing) after they selected by
consultant they supply a working drawing like structural drawing, sanitary drawing,
electrical drawing in one copy based on the agreement and the total project cost(bill of
quantity) for the consultant after they officially announced the contractor. Then
construction begins starting from mobilization and office building.
The contracting work includes so many tasks such as inspecting of the site, quality
control and safety of workers. In the site works executed based on the agreement
between the client and the consultant. This document is called contract document so it
is contractor responsibility to checks every trade of work is executed based on the
contract document and the working methodology. Drawings and design also provide by
the consultant side.
2.2.1 Flow in the section
The working flow of the consultant and the contractor has many advantages in order to
work every task closely and to solve problems arise between them. In every work there
is a work flow whatever small is the section, my working site at Wadi Al Shaqra project
the work flow was look like the chart below. As shown in the chart every work was
executed based on this flow

Figure 3: flow in the section
1. Design and supervision team
The team includes structural engineer, architectural engineers, sanitary engineers,
electrical engineers and other experienced engineers in other professions. The design
and supervision team is a team from the consultant side which guide every work
executed in that site and gives supervision for the contractor based on the drawing and
the specification (bill of quantity).
This team mostly comes to the site when there is amiss understanding on drawings,
working techniques, drawing detailing error, and for meeting between the three parties.
The team provides continuous service to the project from start to finish, establishing
and maintaining the quality and integrity of each design.
2. Project manager
The project manager has so many responsibilities at the site and in our site these
positions is accountable for the contractor or the owner and are appointed by the owner
of the construction company.
The main duty of the manager is Manages the whole site work execution, Makes
payment to sub contract workers, Approves material request, Analyses the work
processes, Executes sub-contracting agreements, Reviews and checks the reports made
by the office engineer.
He/she also responsible for approval of change orders, invoices, deals with the
consultant. So, the poject manager mostly control every work as much as possible in
terms of their quality, cost and time.
3. Site Engineer
Site engineer shall be accountable for the following tasks and responsibilities:
 Studying the work plan submitted by the contactor and suggests any
modifications.
 To watch and inspect the construction work and assure that it is done in full
accordance with the drawings, technical specifications and bills of quantities.

using the template and procedure established by the consultant.
 Ensuring the correct implementation of the works according to technical
specifications, to designs and quality of materials
 prepare weekly report and suggest and instruct additional safety measures if
needed
 Site engineer manages all the machineries and workers on the different site
 A good site engineer is the keystone of their projects since they control every
work more closely than the others
 like project manager
4. Surveyor.
In any construction a surveyor is mandatory so, in our site the surveyor works starting
from setting out to checking verticality, keeping the natural level of the building,
checking elevation of columns.
5. Skilled and non-skilled workers:
This group includes masons, carpenter, bar benders, staff man, operator, mechanic and
the daily laborers. In our company workers of such group are appointed only by
experience these have its own advantage on the constriction. They work everything as
they ordered by withers the site engineer or the surveyor.
2.3 Work experience or task I have been executing
Since I have studied surveying course in my university so I was expecting to assigned
with the surveyor, but the projector manager assigned me with the site engineer as his
assistant so that I can easily learn from his experience and his methodology of executing
work on site and managing the whole team. The responsibilities of Site engineer include
management of sites as well as office documentation, computation of readings and
inspection of drawings.
2.3.1 Office Task
In my three weeks internship period I was asked to observe office work and I
experienced that Office works are mostly the work in progress at the site this includes
some tasks performed by site engineer. Such as;
 Report writing
 Reading and interpreting drawings
 AutoCAD 2013
Here I will discuss Report writing, AutoCAD 2013 and Reading and interpreting drawing
as these were my only task in office work.
Department of Civil Technology
Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 15 Hosting Company:
a) Report writing
Reporting is a controlling / informative mechanism which will help in evaluating the
status of a project. It also help decision makers to follow the status of the project
without being present physically on the site. The reports should explain the history of
the project .It should be realistic and self-explanatory. Numbers in a report are far
important than number crunching. Putting numbers for a report writer like 10 % or
90% may be simple but the meaning for the decision makers is very vital. Putting wrong
figures knowingly or unknowingly are devastating.
Major Contents of Report:
Project data ,Accomplishment of weekly Plan, Weekly labor and Machinery Deployment,
Material Delivered to the site, major Problems of the week , Solutions given to the major
problems, Anticipated problems to be solved for the next week , next week plan.
b) Reading and interpreting drawings
Drawings are the means by which the designer conveys the physical, quantitative,
and visual description of the project to the contractor. The drawings are a two-
dimensional representation of the physical structure that meets the objectives of the
owner. They are also known as plans or blueprints.
In this company AutoCAD drawings are used in which the site engineer design the
road with all the technicalities such as it shows where the filling is required or
cutting and the culvert box.
c) AutoCAD 2013
I was taught AutoCAD 2004 basic in our first semester but that wasn’t much
effective because it was very old version. I was given the software to learn and make
drawings of the simple house plan so that I can at least learn AutoCAD handling.
2.3.2 Site Task
The site work was the very important task for me because it is the main objective of
the internship. The ite work helped me in different areas such as communication
skill, handling workers, management skill etc.
The tasks I have been executing on the site are:
 Supervising of ongoing procedure
 Inspection of the work element
 Handling of equipment (total station, auto level
and GPS device).

3. Material and Methods.
The procedures I followed and performed different task are briefly describe below
on each project respectively.
3.1 Project: Souq AL Makhwa road asphalt
Task: Road asphalt and Curb stone work. Project Cost:
Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting. Consultant: Saudi tech.
Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia.
In this project our company was given the task for the road asphalt in the makhwa
market and also the blocks work on the island. Usually asphalt is done on a rough
surface or after scratching the old asphalt with the help of scrapper commonly
known as resurfacing but in this project due to shortage of time and a very busy
point in the city the client decided to re asphalt the all roads.
Here I was present just to witness the whole site and to observe the asphalt
procedure. This work requires much accuracy and mistakes are not bearable.

3.2. Project: Sanaia Link Road
Task: Designing and construction of road Project Cost:
Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting Consultant: Baldiyah Makhwa
Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia
This project was construction of 10km road which was divided in eight links in a new
housing society. The contractor makes a profile of the land and designs the road on the
area which was covered by mountains so blasting and cutting of the mountains was
carried out. Excavation work was already done on the site and there were total eight
roads. The filling was done and the road was in grading process.
a) Center line
A center line is marked by measuring the both ends of the road so that asphalt can be
done. The road is total of 10Km, after which small steel bars are placed for marking.
b) Levelling
Before asphalt is carried out the road is levelled on all three points which includes both
the ends and the centre line. Levelling is carried out by placing the auto level equipment
on a distance from where most of the road is covered and the staff man can be clearly
seen and reading on the staff scale.
The staff scale reading then gives the value of the subgrade material which should be of
20cm width and if the width is exceeding or it is underneath the 20cm we mention it
with the small steel bar and then the grader or the roller calls on the site to level it.

3.3 Project: Wadi Al Shaqra Link Road
Task: Designing of road and construction. Project Cost:
Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting. Consultant: Saudi tech.
Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia.
This project was actually divided in two phase of working procedure. The total road
constitute of 5Km, the first phase of the road was completed earlier (3Km).
The major problem we face here is the weather condition and its geographical location
as it was low latitude, the danger of heavy floods and landslip is quit high, also the area
is surrounded heavy mountains and the road is to be constructed in the gap.
Completion of this project in a given time was a challenge.

 Bench mark
Before we start work we have to put the bench mark for further construction and to put
bench mark it is necessary to locate a place on a site area from where we can see the
whole study area where we need to do construction.
There are several methods for putting the bench mark but my company gives me the
GPS device and the site engineer took me to possible highest place and there we make
our bench mark by taking Easting and Northing readings.
 Setting out/Surveying
A road is set out in order to clearly define the outline of the excavation and the center
line of the walls, so that construction can be carried out exactly according to the plan.
The basic coordinates of land will be set in position in accordance to the given bench
mark. Surveying carried out and we mark coordinates to take a plane area for the road
where no obstacles such as river, houses or farms in that area with the help of total
station.
Fig 10 : Wadi al shaqra area where road will be construct
 Excavation
Excavation is the first step of construction. It refers to the process of removing soil or
rock from its original location, typically in preparation for constructing foundations,
basements, roads in mountain area and underground utility lines and for grading of the
ground surface. Excavation work I have seen was including cutting of the mountain with
bulldozer and the material to be filled where it is needed with the help of grader. The
top layer we placed is of 20cm subgrade.
The subgrade usually tested in the lab by material and geology engineer which tells us
weather the material is fine to spread before asphalt and will it compressed and about
its compaction details.

Fig 11 : Excavation is in process. bulldozer cutting extra material.
 Leveling/Auto level:
The leveling is done with the auto level equipment. It is done after the subgrade
material and then we prepare another road profile report for the consultant. if the road
is not level the marking is done so that the grader operator level it.
 Grader work:
Grader has to cut the extra material and spread it where the extra material is required
which is called filling. In some places the mountains and the surface are hard so
bulldozer do the same job there. Operator leveling the sub grade material before the
asphalt can done with the grader.

Joining of the company I joined Al Haramain Company for Commerce & Contracting, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 4th august 2014. The project manager Mr. Ahmed Yahya assigned me with the site engineer on the three of their on-going projects. 2.2. Section of the company I have been work My hosting company is working on several projects in Saudi Arabia. I was appointed in Al-Baha region projects, a city which is 400km away from Jeddah. The projects I was appointed are as following: a. Souq Al Mikhwa Road Asphalt b. Sanaia Link Road c. Wadi Al Shaqra Lik Road Our hosting company was a contractor it has so many responsibilities. First the accountant compute bid for their drawing(architectural drawing) after they selected by consultant they supply a working drawing like structural drawing, sanitary drawing, electrical drawing in one copy based on the agreement and the total project cost(bill of quantity) for the consultant after they officially announced the contractor. Then construction begins starting from mobilization and office building. The contracting work includes so many tasks such as inspecting of the site, quality control and safety of workers. In the site works executed based on the agreement between the client and the consultant. This document is called contract document so it is contractor responsibility to checks every trade of work is executed based on the contract document and the working methodology. Drawings and design also provide by the consultant side. 2.2.1 Flow in the section The working flow of the consultant and the contractor has many advantages in order to work every task closely and to solve problems arise between them. In every work there is a work flow whatever small is the section, my working site at Wadi Al Shaqra project the work flow was look like the chart below. As shown in the chart every work was executed based on this flow
  • 13. Department of Civil Technology Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 13 Hosting Company: Figure 3: flow in the section 1. Design and supervision team The team includes structural engineer, architectural engineers, sanitary engineers, electrical engineers and other experienced engineers in other professions. The design and supervision team is a team from the consultant side which guide every work executed in that site and gives supervision for the contractor based on the drawing and the specification (bill of quantity). This team mostly comes to the site when there is amiss understanding on drawings, working techniques, drawing detailing error, and for meeting between the three parties. The team provides continuous service to the project from start to finish, establishing and maintaining the quality and integrity of each design. 2. Project manager The project manager has so many responsibilities at the site and in our site these positions is accountable for the contractor or the owner and are appointed by the owner of the construction company. The main duty of the manager is Manages the whole site work execution, Makes payment to sub contract workers, Approves material request, Analyses the work processes, Executes sub-contracting agreements, Reviews and checks the reports made by the office engineer. He/she also responsible for approval of change orders, invoices, deals with the consultant. So, the poject manager mostly control every work as much as possible in terms of their quality, cost and time. 3. Site Engineer Site engineer shall be accountable for the following tasks and responsibilities:  Studying the work plan submitted by the contactor and suggests any modifications.  To watch and inspect the construction work and assure that it is done in full accordance with the drawings, technical specifications and bills of quantities. Design and supervision team Site Engineer Surveyor Skilled and non-skilled workers Project Manager
  • 14. Department of Civil Technology Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 14 Hosting Company:  Supervising the works on site in accordance with the contract documents and using the template and procedure established by the consultant.  Ensuring the correct implementation of the works according to technical specifications, to designs and quality of materials  prepare weekly report and suggest and instruct additional safety measures if needed  Site engineer manages all the machineries and workers on the different site  A good site engineer is the keystone of their projects since they control every work more closely than the others  like project manager 4. Surveyor. In any construction a surveyor is mandatory so, in our site the surveyor works starting from setting out to checking verticality, keeping the natural level of the building, checking elevation of columns. 5. Skilled and non-skilled workers: This group includes masons, carpenter, bar benders, staff man, operator, mechanic and the daily laborers. In our company workers of such group are appointed only by experience these have its own advantage on the constriction. They work everything as they ordered by withers the site engineer or the surveyor. 2.3 Work experience or task I have been executing Since I have studied surveying course in my university so I was expecting to assigned with the surveyor, but the projector manager assigned me with the site engineer as his assistant so that I can easily learn from his experience and his methodology of executing work on site and managing the whole team. The responsibilities of Site engineer include management of sites as well as office documentation, computation of readings and inspection of drawings. 2.3.1 Office Task In my three weeks internship period I was asked to observe office work and I experienced that Office works are mostly the work in progress at the site this includes some tasks performed by site engineer. Such as;  Report writing  Reading and interpreting drawings  AutoCAD 2013 Here I will discuss Report writing, AutoCAD 2013 and Reading and interpreting drawing as these were my only task in office work.
  • 15. Department of Civil Technology Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 15 Hosting Company: a) Report writing Reporting is a controlling / informative mechanism which will help in evaluating the status of a project. It also help decision makers to follow the status of the project without being present physically on the site. The reports should explain the history of the project .It should be realistic and self-explanatory. Numbers in a report are far important than number crunching. Putting numbers for a report writer like 10 % or 90% may be simple but the meaning for the decision makers is very vital. Putting wrong figures knowingly or unknowingly are devastating. Major Contents of Report: Project data ,Accomplishment of weekly Plan, Weekly labor and Machinery Deployment, Material Delivered to the site, major Problems of the week , Solutions given to the major problems, Anticipated problems to be solved for the next week , next week plan. b) Reading and interpreting drawings Drawings are the means by which the designer conveys the physical, quantitative, and visual description of the project to the contractor. The drawings are a two- dimensional representation of the physical structure that meets the objectives of the owner. They are also known as plans or blueprints. In this company AutoCAD drawings are used in which the site engineer design the road with all the technicalities such as it shows where the filling is required or cutting and the culvert box. c) AutoCAD 2013 I was taught AutoCAD 2004 basic in our first semester but that wasn’t much effective because it was very old version. I was given the software to learn and make drawings of the simple house plan so that I can at least learn AutoCAD handling. 2.3.2 Site Task The site work was the very important task for me because it is the main objective of the internship. The ite work helped me in different areas such as communication skill, handling workers, management skill etc. The tasks I have been executing on the site are:  Supervising of ongoing procedure  Inspection of the work element  Handling of equipment (total station, auto level and GPS device).

The procedures I followed and performed different task are briefly describe below on each project respectively. 3.1 Project: Souq AL Makhwa road asphalt Task: Road asphalt and Curb stone work. Project Cost: Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting. Consultant: Saudi tech. Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia. In this project our company was given the task for the road asphalt in the makhwa market and also the blocks work on the island. Usually asphalt is done on a rough surface or after scratching the old asphalt with the help of scrapper commonly known as resurfacing but in this project due to shortage of time and a very busy point in the city the client decided to re asphalt the all roads. Here I was present just to witness the whole site and to observe the asphalt procedure. This work requires much accuracy and mistakes are not bearable. • 17. Department of Civil Technology Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 17 Hosting Company: 3.2. Project: Sanaia Link Road Task: Designing and construction of road Project Cost: Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting Consultant: Baldiyah Makhwa Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia This project was construction of 10km road which was divided in eight links in a new housing society. The contractor makes a profile of the land and designs the road on the area which was covered by mountains so blasting and cutting of the mountains was carried out. Excavation work was already done on the site and there were total eight roads. The filling was done and the road was in grading process. a) Center line A center line is marked by measuring the both ends of the road so that asphalt can be done. The road is total of 10Km, after which small steel bars are placed for marking. b) Levelling Before asphalt is carried out the road is levelled on all three points which includes both the ends and the centre line. Levelling is carried out by placing the auto level equipment on a distance from where most of the road is covered and the staff man can be clearly seen and reading on the staff scale. The staff scale reading then gives the value of the subgrade material which should be of 20cm width and if the width is exceeding or it is underneath the 20cm we mention it with the small steel bar and then the grader or the roller calls on the site to level it. Project Cost: Contractor: AL Haramain Company of commerce and contracting. Consultant: Saudi tech. Client: Ministry of Transportation Saudi Arabia. This project was actually divided in two phase of working procedure. The total road constitute of 5Km, the first phase of the road was completed earlier (3Km). The major problem we face here is the weather condition and its geographical location as it was low latitude, the danger of heavy floods and landslip is quit high, also the area is surrounded heavy mountains and the road is to be constructed in the gap. Completion of this project in a given time was a challenge. Fig 9 : Sandstorm in Wadi Al Shaqra
  • 19. Department of Civil Technology Written By: Ahmed Zakaria Page 19 Hosting Company:  Bench mark Before we start work we have to put the bench mark for further construction and to put bench mark it is necessary to locate a place on a site area from where we can see the whole study area where we need to do construction. There are several methods for putting the bench mark but my company gives me the GPS device and the site engineer took me to possible highest place and there we make our bench mark by taking Easting and Northing readings.  Setting out/Surveying A road is set out in order to clearly define the outline of the excavation and the center line of the walls, so that construction can be carried out exactly according to the plan. The basic coordinates of land will be set in position in accordance to the given bench mark. Surveying carried out and we mark coordinates to take a plane area for the road where no obstacles such as river, houses or farms in that area with the help of total station. Fig 10 : Wadi al shaqra area where road will be construct  Excavation Excavation is the first step of construction. It refers to the process of removing soil or rock from its original location, typically in preparation for constructing foundations, basements, roads in mountain area and underground utility lines and for grading of the ground surface. Excavation work I have seen was including cutting of the mountain with bulldozer and the material to be filled where it is needed with the help of grader. The top layer we placed is of 20cm subgrade. The subgrade usually tested in the lab by material and geology engineer which tells us weather the material is fine to spread before asphalt and will it compressed and about its compaction details.

It is done after the subgrade material and then we prepare another road profile report for the consultant. if the road is not level the marking is done so that the grader operator level it.  Grader work: Grader has to cut the extra material and spread it where the extra material is required which is called filling. In some places the mountains and the surface are hard so bulldozer do the same job there. Operator leveling the sub grade material before the asphalt can done with the grader.
