MS Word (2010 and above) for Windows is the preferred editor to be used to prepare your report. However, this template should work with MS Word for Mac as well.
To apply a Style, you must first type the text (e.g. in the default Normal style), then select it, and finally apply the style by selecting it in the Styles list. In the rest of this document, each style is shown in brackets “[…]” the first time it is applied.
If you experience any issue with the formatting

This is a Paragraph. Within the text, you can emphasize [Emphasis] text, bold [strong] text or underline [Underline] text. How to Use in Text Citations
Type the document in Word.
After typing the paragraph, table, chart, etc., click on the reference tab at the top of the page.
Click on the citations style box that says APA.
Click on insert citation.
Click on add new source.
Under the type of source click on the drop-down box and select the appropriate choice.
Fill it in completely and click ok.
Add the period, quotation mark, etc. at the end of parentheses.
Repeat this each time the paragraph changes.
How to Prepare a Reference Page
Click on the reference tab and choose bibliography.
Click on insert bibliography.
Go to the home tab and on the paragraph section change the indention (for all but the first line) to hanging.
Also, in the paragraph section, change the spacing to double space, and click on remove spacing after paragraph. (References should be single-spaced within the source and double-spaced between sources.)
APA Formatting for the Body of the Paper
Margins: APA format requires 1” margins on the top, bottom, and sides of the page. The default on Word is incorrect for APA so it is necessary to change it.
Remove extra spacing After all Body Paragraphs: Click the drop-down arrow for the Line and Spacing button (Home tab, Paragraph group), and choose the Remove Spacing After Paragraph option. Do this at the beginning of your paper so all space is removed after all body paragraphs.
Line Spacing: The default line spacing for Word is set at 1.15 and is incorrect for APA. The line spacing should be double-spaced (2.0) and remember to hit the enter bar only once between paragraphs (do not leave a blank line after body paragraphs).
Font and Font Size: It is necessary to change the font to 12, Times New Roman, as this is also not the Word default. Be sure to make changes prior to typing the document. [These guidelines are in compliance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Edition.]
Template
Make an outline of the APA formatting and save it in a file or document. When typing an APA business paper preset the margins, spacing, and header so that they are compliant with APA guidelines. Save the document under the title of the paper and use the preset outline as a guide. Retain this guide for future APA formatting help.
Remember:
Sources must be academic in nature (no Wiki sources) and must be current (less than 5 years old). Keep in mind that the doctorate program is projected to be a 3-year program. Editing of sources and references may be required in order to comply with the current standard.

The Writing Process
Spend time planning your paper. Before you can create your first paragraph, consider these “pre-writing” tips. A good practice is to brainstorm ideas and decide how to express the main idea or thesis. Once you have a rough idea of what you want to say or argue, create an outline or list to help you organize the evidence you plan to present. For longer papers, include sub-headings or levels of heading. You can use this template to help you format your paper.
Writing the Body Paragraphs
Each paragraph of your assignment should be clear and easy to follow. We have several good resources to help you write a strong paragraph, such as How to Write a Good Paragraph and the P.I.E. Paragraph Structure.
Using Citations Correctly
In addition to being well-written, each paragraph should include an in-text citation to all ideas, references, or quotations that are from outside sources and research. The Ashford Writing Center provides many resources to help you follow correct citation style (primarily APA) and gives lessons and examples of how to paraphrase and cite sources. The APA Key Elements page is a good place to start.
Using Tables, Graphs, Images, and Appendices
For some papers and reports, you may choose to add a table, graph, or image
within the body of the draft. Or you may choose to include an appendix at the end of your paper. These can help to provide a visual representation of data or other information that you wish to relay to your reader. Follow this guidance to understand when and how to use these features.

You will prepare a paper on an issue concerning human-animal relationships (see Schedule for due
dates). In this paper you will develop alternative (pro and con) positions on the identified issue, taking
