The University of Queensland project to develop a mobile phone application based on ISO 7933 Predicted Heat Strain is complete. Rational heat stress indices have been shown to provide a more accurate assessment of heat stress scenarios than many of the simpler and more commonly used empirical indices such as Effective Temperature (ET) and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). A key advantage is that the rational indices also provide an avenue for the health professional to assess potential heat strain using additional parameters as well as evaluate potential controls. Despite this they have not been as readily accepted and utilised. One of the barriers has been their complexity and the numerous calculations associated with their use, requiring access to a computer. In order to address this issue, a project has been undertaken at The University of Queensland to develop and evaluate a mobile phone application based on the ISO standard 7933 Predicted Heat Strain. This freely available application allows investigators to input a number of parameters associated with the environment, task and individual to evaluate the work scenario’s potential risks and controls without requiring access to a computer. Based on the input data, the app uses a number of algorithms to produce predicted core body temperature and water loss graphs and reports. It is envisaged that the app will become a useful tool for the practicing occupational health and safety professional in the investigation and control of heat stress in the field. Once only accessible to academics or with the purchase of expensive equipment, this free app will take heat stress assessment for the health & safety professional to another level.

Workplace Health Without Borders - US Chapter (WHWB-US) has teamed up with Amazon Smiles program. Our non-profit organization is trying to help workers in nail salons better understand the health hazards and the controls needed to reduce exposure. WHWB-US is partnering with federal OSHA to help self-employed workers and very small employers understand the health and safety hazards of their trade. Unlike larger companies, small employers don't have the human talent and resources to protect themselves from harm. Federal OSHA provides onsite consultations but they don't have the capacity to protect all workers. That's where WHWB-US can help. We have volunteers to train and educate workers on the health hazards that can cause serious physical harm or death over time. We also conduct outreach programs to discuss the economic, social, and governance impact of using a hierarchy of controls to reduce the risk. Some of these interventions can save lives to workers who only seek to provide a living for their families. So, select WHWB-US under the Amazon Smiles program to donate to a charitable cause.

There is growing recognition among businesses about the impact that workplace health and safety management can have on organizational productivity, worker well-being, morale, risk management and operational costs. Thomas Edison was an inventor who wanted to construct a long-lasting battery. His experiments used elemental mercury to create an high energy carrona that would be sustainable. In the development process, elemental mercury was spilled on the wooden floor and seeped into the interstitial spaces. Eventually, the mercury had to be removed and this presentation discusses the trials and tribulations of the project. The use of an onsite CIH proved practical and cost effective to protect workers and the surrounding environment for elevated levels of mercury.

Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on a near-atomic scale to produce new structures, materials and devices. The technology promises scientific advancement in many sectors such as medicine, consumer products, energy, materials and manufacturing. Nanotechnology is generally defined as engineered structures, devices, and systems. Nanomaterials are defined as those things that have a length scale between 1 and 100 nanometers. At this size, materials begin to exhibit unique properties that affect physical, chemical, and biological behavior. Researching, developing, and utilizing these properties is at the heart of new technology. Workers within nanotechnology-related industries have the potential to be exposed to uniquely engineered materials with novel sizes, shapes, and physical and chemical properties. Occupational health risks associated with manufacturing and using nanomaterials are not yet clearly understood. Minimal information is currently available on dominant exposure routes, potential exposure levels, and material toxicity of nanomaterials. Studies have indicated that low solubility nanoparticles are more toxic than larger particles on a mass for mass basis. There are strong indications that particle surface area and surface chemistry are responsible for observed responses in cell cultures and animals. Studies suggests that some nanoparticles can move from the respiratory system to other organs. Research is continuing to understand how these unique properties may lead to specific health effects. Engineering controls are being studied to reduce worker exposures through comprehensive risk assessments. This presentation addresses the current research in identification of hazardous working conditions and the types of engineering controls that can be used to control and reduce the exposure to an acceptable risk.

This brief covers the lessons that need to given to these workers in order to have an honest conversation about the job hazards and how to communicate them to their supervisor. These workers also need to understand that every employers is responsible for their health and safety. Employers have a duty to communicate the hazards and controls so that all workers are protected from harm. Workplace exposure to UFP, also known as ultra fine particles, takes place in many manufacturing scenarios. UFP can't be seen but can be inhaled. It is measured using the nano scale. Studies shown that UFP can damage the brain, lungs, and alter DNA processes. HEPA filters trap UFP before it can be inhaled. NIOSH says HEPA filtration is "effective in capturing nanoscale particles." Industrial hygienists have the skills necessary to solve the problem of nanoscale particles in the workplace.

Individual work tasks and business operations vary from industry to industry as well as within each industry. OSHA has collected a wealth of industrial hygiene sample data prior to the change in collection methods. We looked at the OSHA data to determine where the risks occurred within each industry. In many industries, workers are exposed to very dusty operations from coal mining to construction. This presentation aims to highlight those operations and work tasks where improvements can be made. There are consultants and organizations that could provide support to reduce the risk of exposure and prevent occupational illness and disease.

Heat stress is a concern for baseball and softball officials doing multiple games over a tournament weekend. Some officials can officiate 9-11 games over a three day period with little rest in between. With elevated air temperatures and relative humidity during mid-day, officials are affected by the environmental conditions. This affects not only their cognitive skills but their physical ability to call plays. Wearing the protective gear places an additional heat strain on the officials behind the plate. Progress in understanding the molecular basis of primary neurulation has occurred on two fronts: neural induction and shaping and bending of the neural plate. In regard to the former, the neural plate is now known to be the default state of the ectoderm, and induction of the neural plate actually involves suppressing the formation of the epidermal ectoderm (neural induction is not considered further herein). In regard to shaping and bending of the neural plate, about 100 mutations in the mouse have been identified that result in defective shaping and/or bending and, consequently, result in neural tube defects (NTDs); thus, these mutations provide insight into which genes are involved in both normal and abnormal neurulation. Because these form-shaping events of neurulation are driven by changes in cell behavior, as discussed earlier, it is not surprising that mutation of cytoskeletal, extracellular matrix/cell adhesion, cell cycle, and cell death genes results in NTDs. Neurulation is a highly choreographed morphogenetic series of events that must be precisely timed and coordinated across multiple tissues. This presumably involves signaling among tissues. It is the hope of studies using mouse mutations that such signaling pathways will be identified, ultimately leading to an understanding of the molecular basis of neurulation and the formation of NTDs in both animal models and ultimately in humans. In the following sections, we discuss what has been learned about the molecular basis of shaping and bending of the neural plate.Embryology Neurulation is the critical morphogenetic event occurring during the fourth week of human gestation, converting the previously developed neural plate into the ectoderm covered neural tube that will eventually differentiate into the brain and spinal cord. Genetic regulation of the events involved in mammalian neural tube morphogenesis is a complicated process that involves a multitude of genes. These genes have vital functions in a range of biological activities that are thought to include signaling molecules, transcription proteins and factors, cytoskeletal and gap junction proteins, growth factors, and tumor suppressor genes (Copp et al., 2003; Ewart et al., 1997; Sah et al., 1995; Zhang et al., 1996). The neural tube, formed by the cell shape changes and movements, ultimately fuses at several discrete points.Neurulation (or primary neurulation) starts in the fourth week of gestation and is the process that leads to the formation of the neural tube from the neural plate, the rudiment of the CNS [34]. It encompasses four essential and overlapping events: (1) neural induction, (2) shaping, (3) bending of the neural plate, and (4) closure of the neural tube. Neural induction (1) is the process of neural plate formation, that is, the beginning of the development of the CNS. It occurs during gastrulation starting on day 18. As described earlier, cells of the ectoderm differentiate into the neuroectoderm, a pseudostratif.
