It is taught that education is the key to success; that going to college would open a brighter future,
and those who did not would not be as capable of finding a career. The analogy often presented is
that it is easy to find a job, but it is harder to find a career. I understand that getting a degree would
give me an advantage when applying for a job; there is a lot competition in the job market
especially, if I am to pursue computer engineering, so every advantage is needed. However, I have
realized that there are an infinite amount of options in regards to a career, and not all of them require
a college degree. Before starting college, I believed that education was tedious, but necessary. I still

At the age of fifteen, my mother had just finished cooking dinner when I noticed her slurred speech
and incoherent sentences. Flustered by the sequence of events, I dialed 911 for help. On the way to
the hospital, I recall one of the EMS personnel shakily exclaim: " her blood glucose is 899, she
needs insulin ASAP." Having no understanding of what any of this meant my anxiety multiplied and

My first exposure to osteopathic medicine occurred as a young man when I switched my Primary
Care Provider. The change took place when I was incredibly ill and in urgent need of an

There is more than one type of doctorate in the medical field. A physician can earn either an
allopathic (MD) or an osteopathic (DO) degree. An allopathic degree is the more traditional form of

Dr. Andrew Taylor Still is considered to be the founder of osteopathic medicine. Dr. Still practiced

A Day For A Hospital Volunteer
The skateboard flew from underneath her as she slammed down onto the concrete, her belongings
scattering everywhere around her. As I picked up her belongings to return to her, I noticed she had
landed on her back and was bleeding from her head. Everyone gathered around us. An assistant
teacher tried to help her up when I exclaimed, "Stop! You 're never supposed to move someone with
a head wound." Two others brought her water to help her feel better, but I denied their suggestion,
informing them that she shouldn 't have any water or food in case she needs to have a procedure at
the hospital. I wouldn 't let anyone near this girl until the paramedics arrived. I held her hands in an
attempt to comfort her while we waited. It was in those moments that I found myself grateful for
everything I had learned as a hospital volunteer, while simultaneously wishing I could help the girl
even more. While I had all the right knowledge to prevent more harm from coming to this stranger
who fell off her skateboard, I was unable to provide the level of care I desired.
After that incident, I decided it was time I did more for my community. I began explaining health
insurance to community members in Summer of 2013, and in doing so, I have become more aware

All professionals will find that reflecting on the way they carry out their work can help them
improve the quality of their skills. This is even more important in work involving a continual
increase in understanding, such as fields with ongoing research like osteopathy. ("Ncor" 2017)
Reflecting has become a necessary skill for those in healthcare who want to provide the highest
level of care they can for their patients. It has been proposed that reflection is a more meaningful
method of learning than formal teaching. (Jasper 2003) This essay will question that statement;
briefly describe how to reflect and will contrast the benefits and drawbacks.
Reflection process:
In a healthcare setting reflection is the process of critiquing one's experiences by analysing them
based on the relevant literature. (Reid 1993) Professor Graham Gibbs provides a 6 stage process that
can be followed: (Gibbs' 1988)
Description – simply describe what has happened. It can be useful to describe the experience in the
most matter of fact way so that it can be examined clearly.
Feelings – explain how the incident made you feel.
Evaluation – explain what was good and/or bad about the incident. This will help in identifying
what areas need additional study.
Analysis – what understanding do you have of the incident? This step is crucial in developing skill
but can also be the most challenging. This step requires the practitioner being able to look at the
experience objectively. The nature of being self–critical is that it comes easier to some than it does
for others. Someone with a large ego may have a lot of trouble with this stage but to truly reflect
they will need to learn to be able to criticise themselves. Reflection without critical analysis has
little value as it will serve to mask weak areas of knowledge (Kralik, 2005)
Conclusion – decide whether you could have done anything else.
Action plan – using the knowledge gained from the previous stages prepare for if the situation arises
again.

The time I spent working in the ER as a scribe and the people I met during my time there inspired
me to apply to osteopathic medical schools. Prior to my working there, I honestly didn't know there
were two routes to becoming a physician. I started noticing that there was either D.O. or M.D.
initialed after doctors' names in the signature of different physicians throughout the hospital.
I asked one of the ER doctors if there was a difference between the two. She gave me a vague
