Neoliberalism In Canada
Introduction Unions have a long and sometimes contentious history in Canada, although they are also
the source of many of the labour laws and standards that we have come to accept as normal. However,
since the 1980s, an increasing trend towards favouring neoliberal policies has erased many of the
social welfare and employment standards gains by unions, with particularly harsh effects on more
vulnerable populations including women, immigrants, younger workers, and Aboriginal peoples. A
striking example of these shifts is seen in the restaurant sector in B.C., where recent controversies with
Canada s temporary foreign worker program has at least brought some discussions of worker s rights
to the headlines in regional and national newspapers. Unfortunately, despite this new attention the
current political climate continues to be hostile to workers groups and to workers rights. Changes:
Neoliberalism in Theory and Practice in Canada and British Columbia Neoliberalism is a direct
descendent of 19th century liberalism and was explicitly intended to re create laissez faire conditions

The need to compete effectively in a global workplace has been a theme of reform in British Columbia

the market imperative of Fordism, in that businesses must find ways to make labour more flexible
(Vidal 590), meaning that part time, temporary, and contract workers fear for their jobs and job
security and so are willing to make concessions or even to look the other way when employment

South Meck Observation
Monday through friday South Meck is bustling with the activity of 3,030 students. My old high school
which continues to grow with every new school year is building the a second three story building to
house the influx of students. Along with the two large buildings there is an additional six buildings, a
gym, an auditorium, and three sets of trailers on either side of the school. Since there are so many kids
there are 5 different lunch times dedicated to certain buildings so that the chaos of each 20 minute
lunch period can be miniscule.
When I attended South Meck there was only three lunches, each 40 minutes long. This gave us plenty
of time to go through the lunch line, finish our meal and even talk to our friends. Many of us sat

Most of the kids either ate a lunch they brought from home or they purchased a bag of doritos from
the vendor that was between the 2 cafeteria rooms. Some students didn t eat lunch at all. The students
who ate the school lunch had to wait in a long, slow moving line which deterred many from eating it.
The kids separated into their friend groups which for the most part had moderate diversity with the
exception of one or two groups who remained predominantly their own respective race. One thing that
remained consistent between all of the lunches is that the cafeteria was always filled with students.
For this research, I asked one of my friends, Hannah, who still a student there to skype me in so I
could observe. We started to skype at the end of her class and I watched as her and other students
herded into the lunch building. She described what she witnessed as I paid close attention to the
screen. Many students were either speed walking or running toward the lunch lines while other rushed
to claim their spot in the cafeteria or hallway. Once all the spots are claimed in the cafeteria and on the
sides of the hallway, several social groups take to standing in

Macbeth (Witches Effect) Essays
Topic: How important are the witches to Macbeth? Discuss the effects of the witches on character,
plot, themes and audience.
In the play of ‘Macbeth by William Shakespeare the witches have an important effect on Macbeth,
the characters, the plot, the theme and the audience. They help construct the play and without them it
would have been a totally different story line. The three weird sisters influence Macbeth in his acts,
they effect characters lives, orientate the plot, they are related to most of the themes and appeal the
audience s attention.

The witches can predict the future, they can add temptation, and influence Macbeth, but they cannot
control his destiny. Macbeth creates his own misery when he is driven by the guilt of his actions.
Although the witches did have the power to accurately predict significant events in Macbeth s life, the
actual ‘carrying out of those prophecies was undertaken by Macbeth.
In this play, the three equivocators have a resilient effect, not only on Macbeth but on the other
characters too. ‘Lesser than Macbeth, and greater. Not so happy yet much happier. Thou shalt get
kings though thou be none. (Act 1 Scene 3) Banquo is directly involved with the three witches; he
talks to them face to face. Being at first strongly contrasted with Macbeth, as an innocent man with a
guilty one, it seems like this contrast must be continued to his death; while, in reality, though it is
never removed, it is gradually diminished. Banquo in fact may be described much more truly than
Macbeth as the victim of the Witches.
Some other characters are indirectly affected by their prophecies. If Macbeth had not been influenced
by the witches, he would not have killed Duncan. Because they are the ones who start the play and
orientate it, the witches have an effect on every ones life.
The three weird sisters prophesies orientate the plot in a certain direction, some events might not have
occurred without their sayings. Macbeth hears these words and then tries to make

Ticks In Oklahoma
In Oklahoma many residents spend time in heavily populated areas with
ticks. Almost all the land in Oklahoma is owned by private individuals such as farmers, ranchers and
average citizens. This means that more Oklahoman s are at risk of coming in contact with ticks.
Prevention through education is the key to ensure less people become infected every year. With this in
mind knowing the source of the disease, how its transmitted, early detection, treatment and prevention
steps will decrease the number of cases each year. Since we are at a higher risk its our responsibility to
inform locals of the potential hazards that lurk in our back yards.
Lyme Disease comes from a line of bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi which originated during the
ice age in Europe. Lyme disease cases are mainly reported in the northeastern states. This blood borne
pathogen can only survive inside a host such as a tick. The Ixodes tick commonly known as the black
legged tick or deer ticks become infected transmitting Lyme Disease through their bite. Unexpected
hosts such as deer, fox, possum, raccoons, horses, cattle, small rodents, pets and even humans can be

Evolution of Management Theory
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Managing is one of the most important human activities. From the time human beings began forming
social organizations to accomplish aims and objectives they could not accomplish as individuals,
managing has been essential to ensure the coordination of individual efforts. As society continuously
relied on group effort, and as many organized groups have become large, the task of managers has
been increasing in importance and complexity. Henceforth, managerial theory has become crucial in
the way managers manage complex organizations. It has to be unequivocally emphasized that
managers who mix management theories in their day to day practice, have better chances of managing
their organizations more efficiently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, the purpose of an organizational structure is to help in creating an environment for human
performance. However, designing an organizational structure is not an easy managerial task because
many problems are encountered in making structures fit situations, including both defining the kind of
jobs that must be done and finding the people to do them.
Staffing involves filling, and keeping filled, the positions in the organization structure. This is done by
identifying work force requirements; inventorying the people available; and recruiting, selecting,
placing, promoting, appraising, planning the careers of, compensating, and training or otherwise
developing both candidates and current jobholders to accomplish their tasks effectively and efficiently.
Leading is the influencing of people so that they will contribute to organization and group goals; it has
to do predominantly with the interpersonal aspect of managing. Most important problems to managers
arise from people their desires and attitudes, their behavior as individuals and in groups. Hence,
effective managers need to be effective leaders. Leading involves motivation, leadership styles and
approaches and communication. Controlling, for example, budget for expense, is the measuring and
correcting of activities of subordinates to ensure that events conform to plans. It measures
performance against goals and plans, shows where negative deviations exist, and, by

The Characteristics Of The Monarch Butterfly
The monarch population has decreased up to about 22 million from last year to this year. (Rice) The
monarch butterfly is an insect that is beneficial to the ecosystem ;however, their population has
decreased over the years. Poaching and farming have caused this declination ,but there are solutions
we can work with that may help the population increase once again. The monarch butterfly is known
by scientists as Danaus plexippus, which in Greek literally means sleepy transformation. The name
evokes the species ability to hibernate and metamorphize.(Schafer) Monarch butterflies are indicator
species just like they are pollinators as well ,and their characteristics all serve different purposes to
help them. For instance, their colorful wings consist of veins and muscles. These features help blood
circulate through their tiny bodies and allow them to be able to do move. Their characteristics tell
differences in their gender as well by their patterns. In fact, males have black dots on their wings ,and
females are a little smaller in size. Additionally, they live up to about two to six weeks as they grow
from a caterpillar to becoming an adult monarch butterfly. Their life cycle is made up of four stages:
egg, the larvae, the pupa, and the adult butterfly. It lasts about 28 to 38 days to be able to complete the
process. Their winter migration usually takes place in Mexico or Southern California, where it is

The Tax Laws And The United States Constitution
Ever since the ratification of the 16th amendment to the United States Constitution, Americans have
faced the burden of federal income taxes. Income taxes were first proposed as a better way of
gathering revenue, as well as an effective measure to manipulate economic spending. However, the
current tax code bears very little resemblance to the relatively simple codes that were originally
written into law. Today s tax laws have grown astonishingly complex and unequally distributes the
burden of tax liabilities. Our country should confront the issues derived from the increasing
complexity of the tax laws and equally distribute the obligations to each taxpayer.
Virtually all citizens and politicians alike, agree that the current tax code is entirely too complex, yet
nearly every year the system gets more complicated, not less. The reason is that simplicity almost
always clashes with the other goals within the tax policy. Most people believe income taxes should be
enforceable, fair, and beneficial to economic wealth, all while maintaining simplicity. But even those
who agree on the necessity of these goals often disagree about the hierarchical importance of each. As
a result, the tax policies usually represent a portion of each competing goal, leaving no room for
simplicity. For example, most countries tailor tax liabilities to the characteristics of the individual
taxpayer. That can make taxes more fair, but also more complex. Income must first be traced from a
business to the

Seven Approaches to Studying the Human Body Essay
When studying the human body, there are seven organizational approaches. Each approach studies the
body in a different yet unique way and is used in the health care field. The approaches consist of; body
planes and directions, body cavities, quadrants and regions, anatomy and physiology, microscopic and
macroscopic, body systems and medical specialties.
There are three body planes which use different directions: coronal, sagittal, and transverse planes.
Coronal plane slices the body from head to toe giving a front and back view. There are two directions
that are related with it; anterior posterior, moving from the outside of the body through the anterior
part then the posterior section, and posterior anterior, which is its reverse. ... Show more content on

For instance, in the left lower quadrant is the lower part of the kidney, part of the colon, and the left
ovary for women. This type of diagram would help with position the organs. In the health field,
physicians refer to this during an internal exam.
According to Degreedirectory.org (1999), anatomy studies the structure of organs and cells. Since
cells are a microscopic size the best way to study, using this approach is with a microscope, which is,
a tool used to examine cells. Physiology is the study of the function of organ and cells. Organs are of a
macroscopic size that means it can be seen with the naked eye. These approaches can be used in many
ways in health care. An orthopedic would study muscles and tendons or an immunologist would study
blood cells using a microscope.
The human body is made up of several different types of systems. This means that each system is
made up of a few organs, which synchronize with one another and work as a unit. Organs are unable
to perform without the help of the other organs in their unit. All of the organs support one another to
perform their functions.

Andrew Carnegie s Leadership
Dogged determination, refusal to conform, a strong desire for knowledge and eternal optimism are a
few terms practically synonymous when referring to Andrew Carnegie. With a childhood marked by
struggle, Carnegie learned at a young age, the value of an education. His desire to learn is evidenced
by the knowledge he gained when his family immigrated to the United States, from Scotland in1848.
While on the ship, at 12 years old and determined to make the best of his situation, he learned how the
ship s day to day operations were handled. He helped with Sunday dinners, learned the names of the
ropes and eventually helped lead the passengers when necessary. Young Carnegie was not content to
keep his place, therefore, he explored and mastered his environment, taking full advantage of all he
could gain from the experience. A keen eye for opportunity or brazen disregard for protocol could also
be synonymous when referring to Andrew Carnegie. In 1853, while working as a personal assistant for

And Sonny couldn t take that. (p. 91) This interaction between Sonny and Isabel and her family is a
critical moment Baldwin uses to convey the theme of communication. Sonny is putting his heart and
soul into the music as a way to communicate the way he feels, but the people around him do not
understand his interpretation and in turn cannot communicate with Sonny. The dynamic character with
the most impact in the story is easily the narrator. A dynamic character is a character that undergoes a
major change in the story. We see this major change finally come in the last sequence of the story.
Sonny and the narrator go to a nightclub where the narrator watches Sonny perform on the piano. This
is where the reader finally sees the narrator gain an understanding of his brother. And, while Creole
listened, Sonny moved, deep within exactly like someone in torment. I had never before thought of
how awful the relationship must be between the musician and his instrument. He has to fill it, this
instrument, with the breath of life, his own. (p. 99) The narrator finally understand why Sonny is
attracted to music. Music gives him the ability to express himself, to communicate his feelings with
others in a way words do not allow. A tortured soul, Sonny is able to be free of the torment of life
when he plays the piano. Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to
be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we

A Comparison of Butler s Life and Kindred Essay
A Comparison of Butler s Life and Kindred
What lies in the mind of an author as he or she begins the long task of writing a fiction novel? This
question can be answered if the author s life is studied and then compared to the work itself. Octavia
E. Butler s life and her novel Kindred have remarkable comparisons. This essay will point out
important events of Butler s life and how they link to the mentioned novel.
Octavia Estelle Butler was born on June 22, 1947 in Pasadena, California (Voices From 1). She began
her life with many hardships as an only child and having her father die when she was very young
(Voices From 1). She grew up in a location that had a wide variety of racial backgrounds, however
Butler never felt like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She became bored with the books that were more common for children her age and became interested
in fairy tales and horse stories (Black Women 208). She received a card for the public library and as
she became more comfortable with reading she discovered that she was very interested in science
fiction (Black Women 208). Science fiction became a false reality for Butler, however she was
concerned for the lack of Black characters and the stereotypes that women received in the novels that
she read (Black Women 208). These important events were the beginning of the process that would
shape her into a feministic science fiction writer.
It wasn t until the eighth grade that she realized that she had become a very intelligent young woman
(Notable Black 144). She often engaged in competitions with a friend of a different learning disorder
to see which of the two could receive better grades. Until that point in her life she considered herself
as not being very bright but when she started winning the competitions she described it as the first
time that I d ever done anything to impress myself (Notable Black 144). It is interesting to consider
that she may have been forced out of her dyslexia by the accompaniment of adults and her strange
attraction to science fiction novels. However, the consequences of the dyslexia such as shyness and
the difficulty to understand still haunted her throughout high school (Notable Black 144).

Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians
Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians The characterisitics of the ideal guardian is summarized in
those words by Socrates in the second book of the Republic : [H]e who is to be a really good and
noble guardian of the State will require to unite in himself philosophy and spirit and swiftness and
strength. . . Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to be like a well bred
watchdog, who ought to be quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy when they see him, and
strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him. The requirement of spirit is
then derived from this, because if he is to fight well he ought to be brave, and Socrates finds that he is
not likely to be brave who has not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Heroes should not be seen lamenting or fearing death. In short, only virtues which are desirable shall
be depicted in their tales, and none that are undesirable which children might imitate. The gymnastic
education that Socrates prescribes is not as complicated. He rather merely says that it would be
sufficient for their purposes that those being reared to be guardians maintain a healthy diet and follow
a simple exercise plan from youth. What is more emphasized by Socrates is that there should be
balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be properly
harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those who
likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. As Socrates says, this ferocity only comes from spirit,
which if rightly educated, would give courage, but, if too much intensified, is liable to become hard
and brutal. He continues, On the other hand the philosopher will have the quality of gentleness. And
this also, when too much indulged, will turn to softness, but, if educated rightly will be gentle and
moderate. Thus the traits that make a good guardian are developed and nurtured through a good
balance of musical and gymnastic education. That portion in the second book is where the qualities are
actually first enumerated. The discussion will deviate a little in the third to the fifth books, and the
subject will be brought up again in the sixth book. There Socrates

Experiment #4AA Separation and purification Scheme Amena Alkeswani, PHCC Dhanlal Murally,
PHCC September 27, 2012 Abstract: There are millions of different organic compounds. Most of them
are found in mixtures and in order to achieve a pure form they need to be separated, isolated, and
purified. However, there are endless numbers of possible mixtures, which make it impossible to have a
pre designed procedure for every mixture. So chemists often have to make their own procedures. The
purpose of this experiment was to prepare the student to the real world by them designing their own
procedure which will help them understand the techniques of separation and purification better. The

Comparing Antigone To Creon
The play Antigone is about two brothers who kill each other in battle, one is buried one isn t and laws
are placed in order to prevent it from happening. A sister comes in to bury his brother despite the laws
and risk potential death in the process. The person who put these laws into place is called Creon, who
wants the person who buried the body to face justice. The sister who committed this crime is
Antigone, who is also the character that I m contrasting with Creon.
Antigone, while being the sibling to the two brothers, is also related to Creon. You would assume this
would cause Creon to not consider killing his blood and also is actually his son s bride. Instead, he
chooses to be relentless and even tell to her sister, Ismene, Why not? There are other fields for him to
plough. This choice was a big contributor to Creon s becoming of a tragic hero. It shows to Antigone
that he doesn t want her brother buried by any means necessary even if it means killing his own blood.
This also leads to the scene where Haemon, Creon s son, confronts his about the killing of his bride. ...

gods for them, so she, in a way, is disobeying the gods. We don t know where he got this idea from but
he s been thinking he was doing the right thing all along. So with this he eventually confirms that
Antigone will die. How this advances the plot is her future husband will come confront her about it as

Explain How Are Gradients Important In Diffusion And Osmosis
Questions to Ponder:
What is kinetic energy and how does it differ from potential energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, however potential energy is the energy that is stored.
What environmental factors affect kinetic energy and diffusion?
Factors like temperature, surface area, and salinity affect kinetic energy and diffusion.
Why do these factors alter kinetic energy and diffusion?
Temperature increases kinetic energy of the molecules, facilatating faster diffusion of particles as
particles now have a greater speed and thus more readily diffuse across the membrane. Higher surface
area allows for greater diffusion as more particles can enter at once with more room in which to enter.
Higher salinity means more particles within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How are gradients important in diffusion and osmosis?
Without gradients, diffusion and osmosis would not be possible. This is because diffusion is the
movement of particles down concentration gradients and osmosis is the diffusion of water, which
means they both require gradients to function.
What is the explanation for the fact that most cells are small and have cell membranes with many
convolutions?
Higher surface area to volume ratio as being small minimizes volume and having many folds
maximizes surface area. With a higher surface area, greater diffusion rates can occur as there is a
larger area for nutrients and water to pass through.
Will water move into or out of a plant cell if the cell has a higher water potential than the surrounding
environment?
Because substance move from high concentration to low concentration, water will go out of the cell
and into the surrounding environment.
What would happen if you applied saltwater to a

Patrick Slush Descriptive Writing
There is nothing more terribly beautiful than the snow stricken streets of New York City. Beneath a

Patrick Sole, a man without a home, is slumped, in wet, grey slush, against a brick wall. He does not

looks and feels as white as a ghost.
With an icy puff of breath, Patrick blinks slowly and blankly observes the blur of faces before him. As

Flashbacks In The Movie Deadpool
Flashbacks are one of the biggest metafictional elements shown in the movie Deadpool. Throughout
the movie these flashbacks help the audience understand who Wade Wilson was and how he became

Florence Nightingale
Nursing is a job we would consider a very selfless job. It s a job that requires you to be at your best at
every moment because someone s life or well being is depending on you. Long shifts may get you
tired, you may not have a lunch break because you are working non stop but you could care less. All
you care about is impacting the lives of others. You are constantly putting others before yourself.
Florence Nightingale was a remarkable woman who did exactly this. Nightingale was born in Florence
Italy, on May 12, 1820. She discovered she wanted to be a nurse early in her lifetime because as a

The soldiers eventually started giving her nicknames like The Lady with the Lamp and The Angel of

Mutiny in 1857. This led to the establishment of a Sanitary Department within the Indian government.
Her reports and testimony to others on sanitary conditions of the army led to a lot of improvements
that also led to opening an army medical college in 1861. Florence also intended to write a book to
help others on practicing how to become a nurse and how nursing can be used in future preferences.
Aside from all of that Florence helped establish many nursing organizations throughout her whole life.
Doing what she did for others she won awards for the work that she did. In the 1870 s, she mentored
Linda Richards, the first professionally trained American nurse, who established nurse training
programs in the U.S. and Japan. In late 1954 s, Nightingale Received a letter from the secretary of War

Charlemagne, The King Of The Franks Essay
Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was born around the 2nd of April 747 and died on the
28th of January 814. He was noted down in history as King of the Franks, a Germanic speaking
people who invaded western Rome residing in current day Germany, the King of the Lombards,
Germanic people who resided in parts of the Italian peninsula, and finally was the first Holy Roman
Emperor. Another name that has been bestowed upon Charlemagne was the title Father of Europe .
Due to the Carolingian empire s rule, Charlemagne was able to unite nearly all of western Europe. The
last empire to do so was the Roman Empire and no other country would unite Europe until the
eighteen hundred under Napoleon. Charlemagne s father was named Pepin the Short, a name that
deceives most on the battlefield due to his incredible and unmatched strength. Pepin the Short was the
predecessor to Charlemagne as the king of the Franks. Pepin also helped set up the Carolingian
dynasty but did not peak its power until the crowning of Charlemagne. Charlemagne s successor was
his son, Louis the Pious, who would be dissimilar from Charlemagne. In fact, for most of his reign,
Louis the Pious would have to deal with many civil wars which foreshadowed the diminishing
strength of the Carolingian empire. Charlemagne would serve as the prototype for most of the
medieval western Europe for the next millennium until the founding of the new world.

Argumentative Essay On Drinking Milk
You always hear your mom or dad say, Drink your milk, so you can get stronger! but is milk really

actually consuming far more than just milk. American dairy farmers have long been injecting cows

Social Psychology, The Social Identity
Within social psychology, the social identity tradition (Tajfel, Billig, Bundy, Flament, 1971) argues
that individuals possess more than their characteristic personal identities, which are activated during
interpersonal contact with others; in addition, people can engage in intergroup behavior as informed
by their social identities (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). Such social identities comprise memberships in any
psychologically relevant grouping with which an individual identifies, including kin, peers,
profession, nation, and cultural identity (Galang, Quiñones, Adriano, Portillo, Carvajal, 2015). The
ingroup identification afforded by social identities then allows individuals to distinguish between
people belonging to and excluded from the ingroup (Brewer Yuki, 2007), and to bolster one s self
concept through affiliation with high status groups and individuals (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). In
addition, these social identities are created and manifested in different ways across cultures as a
function of the values endorsed by society, the ways in which society s members construe themselves,
and the manners in which their interpersonal relationships are structured (Feitosa, Salas, Salazar,
2012).
Moreover, social identity theory (SIT) has been invoked as an explanation for a social psychological
phenomenon introduced in Robert Cialdini and his colleagues (1976) research: basking in reflected
glory (BIRG). As reflected in the opening quote, individuals are able to emphasize

Political and Cultural Significance of the Flavian...
Assess the political and cultural significance of the construction and initial use of the Colosseum.
Throughout the history of Ancient Rome, the construction of public buildings was used as a political
tool, to manipulate the views of the people and to demonstrate the power of the State. The very first
emperor of Rome, Augustus, initiated social reform through the construction of buildings from 27 BC
onwards. Emperor Vespasian in 69 AD used a similar initiative, and throughout Rome s history it can
be seen that times of civil unrest are often followed by a flourish in architecture and the arts. An
example of this can be seen in one of Vespasian s major building projects, the Colosseum, officially
the Flavian Amphitheatre, which had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 79 AD Vespasian came to his final days, dying before the construction of the Colosseum was
complete. His son, Titus, was to take over his role as emperor. Titus, new in his role, knew that he too
must impress the people as his father had done, and so he announced the opening of the Colosseum
would occur one year later. This seemed like an impossible goal for the constructers, and Titus had
planned an extravagant opening to ensure that none would think he was less visionary than his father.
Upon the opening of the great amphitheatre there were one hundred days of fighting. These one
hundred days involved the slaughter of an unfathomable number of animals and men; one source tells
us that five thousand animals were killed in the first day. The writer Cassius Dio tells us just how
extravagant the opening may have been; Titus suddenly filled this same theatre with water and brought
in horses and bulls and some other domesticated animals that had been taught to behave in the liquid
element just as on land. He also brought in people on ships, who engaged in a sea fight there,
impersonating the Corcyreans and Corinthians. This suggests that Titus had the Colosseum flooded in
order to stage a naval battle; however several historians question the technicalities of this, despite the

Analysis Of George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion
Social standing is central to the plot of George Bernard Shaw s play Pygmalion . The portrayal of
class identity in Shaw s play appears to be a criticism of the distinctions between high society and the
poorer classes in Victorian England. Shaw s aim was to portray how the upper crust of Victorian
society viewed the lower classes, as evidenced by Higgins treatment of Eliza upon her first visit to his
laboratory; Higgins treats her as though she is too stupid to understand that he is insulting her. The
assumption is that the wealthy view the lower classes as being somehow lesser. So what is it that Shaw
is trying to impart upon the reader? Shaw appeared to show open disdain not just for the upper class of
society but for society in general, and Pygmalion may be interpreted as an open criticism of class
distinctions in Victorian England. Class distinctions are made abundantly clear in Shaw s Pygmalion.
Eliza is representative of Shaw s view of the English working class of the day: Crude, crass, and
seemingly unintelligent yet worthy of pity. Equal criticism is leveled at the upper classes, who pass
judgement upon the poor precipitated by their appearance and mannerisms. Higgins and Pickering s
attitude towards Eliza is one of derision, stemming from their difference in social status. For instance,
Higgins open mockery of Eliza s speech: You see this creature with her kerbstone English: the English
that will keep her in the gutter to the end of her days. (Shaw.

Propaganda In The Hitler Youth
The pinnacle of the movement is embodied during the raging battles of World War II. At present, it is
apparent that the entire barrage of propaganda for seven plus years was in preparation to send German
youths, both boys and girls, to both fronts to fight the Allied powers. According to expert David Welch
of the BBC, the Nazi usage of propaganda was so persuasive that Hitlerjugend became paramilitary
troops who were sent directly to Poland to fight the Soviets as well as to the Rhine region to fend off
the Americans. One such propaganda poster depicted a father with a SS armband helping his son shoot
a gun, both of them in full military attire, as well as another which, when translated, says, For
Freedom and Life; The People s Storm, (see Appendix B) and Welch argued that such encouragement
would have filled the youth on the battlefield with drive. The surprising fanaticism and reckless
bravado of the Hitler Youth in battle left the Western Allied forces astonished. There were reports of
accounts which detailed how the adolescent boys fought till their death without the thought of
surrendering; young boys were shot by soldiers who were old enough to be their own fathers. From
the D Day and Invasion of Normandy, the Hitlerjugend lost 8000 over the course of six hours. Even
boys at the age of seventeen were described as ruthless fighters, who would outfight their fellow adult
Nazi soldiers, and this can be directly attributed to their indoctrination. Out of the

Spike Lee s Do The Right Thing
Chris Shea Professor Christine Doyle CINE 201 02/04/16 Screening Report for Spike Lee s Do the
Right Thing In the fighting and rioting scenes toward the end of his 1989 film Do the Right Thing,
Spike Lee uses the misc en scene and camera angles to demonstrate that racial tensions are still strong
between the white police officers of Brooklyn and its black citizens. He accomplishes this through the
various actions the police officers take depicting their poor handling of the situation and the effects of
it taken on by the black rioters. The first of such scenes depicts how the police handled Radio Raheem
in his fight against Sam. It would have been just enough for the cops to just pull Raheem off Sam and

Essay On Mercury Pollution
Mercury pollution occurs from industrial sources such as mining, power plants and coal combustion
centers. When mercury is released from the sources, it can travel halfway around the world before it
ever enters into the waterways and contaminates the fish that we then eat. Through the trade of those
fish, people in every continent are at risk for mercury pollution. Newborns are also at risk of mercury
pollution due to the consummation of fish by their mothers, thousands of babies are at risk every year
of impaired motor skills ( Reduce Mercury Pollution ). In order to reduce the pollutants of mercury we
need to implement a policy to clean up sites already contaminated, limit the amounts discharged into
the water and provide consumers on tips to reduce their exposure to it. My first step in decreasing the
amount of mercury is to focus on the areas that are already contaminated. They would priority since
the mercury would have had time to sit and settle and we would want to clean it up before it causes
further harm. Some of the sites would be cleaned up under the EPA s superfund policy. One example
of a site that is being cleaned up is the Carson River Mercury Site in Nevada. This is the former sites
of mills and mining that have contaminated the soil, waterways and fish over a 50 mile stretch.
Nevada at one time recommended that limited consumption of fish and duck from the river should be
in effect. State and federal actions are being performed in order to excavate and remove the
contaminated soils and they were sent to a mineral resource recovery facility. That action has already
reduced the amount of exposure during the monitoring period and they plan to add a layer of clean
topsoil to reduce the exposure to any mercury soil left behind. They have also worked in sampling 26
different developments for mercury affects and levels. They are working on figuring out the cost and
benefit of cleaning up the rivers sediment to try to remove the mercury from the river, wetlands and
reservoir. In the meantime short term cleanup will be done in order to prevent threats to the
population( Carson River Mercury Site ). The second step in my policy to reduce the mercury levels
would be to limit the amount of discharge

A Career As A Radical Feminist
Radical feminists have paved the way for so many women to stand up for themselves. Many rights
were made available to all women because of radical feminists. Their presence, their energy, their
ideology was desperately needed during a difficult time of oppression. Some feminine acts of
oppression are still frowned upon today as a form of oppression. I would rather be a bad feminist then
to not a feminist at all , a quote by Roxanne Gay, but in this generation why should feminists have to
choose between being a good or bad feminist?
Radical feminism, starting around the 1960s, sought to eradicate male supremacy. This wave of
feminists believe that men are the main source of oppression and if you eliminate patriarchy, then
everyone will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently, women have more rights than before and we can contribute a part of that to radical
feminists. We have so many rights, that radical feminism is no longer the only solution, or even
necessary. There are several ways that women, can now, fight oppression.
I think a lot of the ideology from radical feminism is still used by feminist today and Gay highlights
this problem in Bad Feminist. Feminists denounce other feminists for wanting to engage in activities
that radical feminists would not approve of. Which tears down the movement, in my opinion.
Anything that is woman like, or typical behavior for women, gets disapproval. There are women who
like to do woman things, like cook for the husband, or even get married to a man. These women
should not have to choose between being a feminist or not, if they believe in the equality of the

  • 2. Neoliberalism In Canada Introduction Unions have a long and sometimes contentious history in Canada, although they are also the source of many of the labour laws and standards that we have come to accept as normal. However, since the 1980s, an increasing trend towards favouring neoliberal policies has erased many of the social welfare and employment standards gains by unions, with particularly harsh effects on more vulnerable populations including women, immigrants, younger workers, and Aboriginal peoples. A striking example of these shifts is seen in the restaurant sector in B.C., where recent controversies with Canada s temporary foreign worker program has at least brought some discussions of worker s rights to the headlines in regional and national newspapers. Unfortunately, despite this new attention the current political climate continues to be hostile to workers groups and to workers rights. My old high school which continues to grow with every new school year is building the a second three story building to house the influx of students. Along with the two large buildings there is an additional six buildings, a gym, an auditorium, and three sets of trailers on either side of the school. Since there are so many kids there are 5 different lunch times dedicated to certain buildings so that the chaos of each 20 minute lunch period can be miniscule. Most of the kids either ate a lunch they brought from home or they purchased a bag of doritos from the vendor that was between the 2 cafeteria rooms. Some students didn t eat lunch at all. The students who ate the school lunch had to wait in a long, slow moving line which deterred many from eating it. The kids separated into their friend groups which for the most part had moderate diversity with the exception of one or two groups who remained predominantly their own respective race. One thing that remained consistent between all of the lunches is that the cafeteria was always filled with students. For this research, I asked one of my friends, Hannah, who still a student there to skype me in so I could observe. We started to skype at the end of her class and I watched as her and other students herded into the lunch building. She described what she witnessed as I paid close attention to the screen. In the play of ‘Macbeth by William Shakespeare the witches have an important effect on Macbeth, the characters, the plot, the theme and the audience. They help construct the play and without them it would have been a totally different story line. The witches can predict the future, they can add temptation, and influence Macbeth, but they cannot control his destiny. Macbeth creates his own misery when he is driven by the guilt of his actions. Although the witches did have the power to accurately predict significant events in Macbeth s life, the actual ‘carrying out of those prophecies was undertaken by Macbeth. In this play, the three equivocators have a resilient effect, not only on Macbeth but on the other characters too. ‘Lesser than Macbeth, and greater. Not so happy yet much happier. Thou shalt get kings though thou be none. (Act 1 Scene 3) Banquo is directly involved with the three witches; he talks to them face to face. Being at first strongly contrasted with Macbeth, as an innocent man with a guilty one, it seems like this contrast must be continued to his death; while, in reality, though it is never removed, it is gradually diminished. Banquo in fact may be described much more truly than Macbeth as the victim of the Witches. Some other characters are indirectly affected by their prophecies. If Macbeth had not been influenced by the witches, he would not have killed Duncan. Because they are the ones who start the play and orientate it, the witches have an effect on every ones life. • 15. The Tax Laws And The United States Constitution Ever since the ratification of the 16th amendment to the United States Constitution, Americans have faced the burden of federal income taxes. Income taxes were first proposed as a better way of gathering revenue, as well as an effective measure to manipulate economic spending. However, the current tax code bears very little resemblance to the relatively simple codes that were originally written into law. Today s tax laws have grown astonishingly complex and unequally distributes the burden of tax liabilities. Our country should confront the issues derived from the increasing complexity of the tax laws and equally distribute the obligations to each taxpayer. Virtually all citizens and politicians alike, agree that the current tax code is entirely too complex, yet nearly every year the system gets more complicated, not less. The reason is that simplicity almost always clashes with the other goals within the tax policy. Most people believe income taxes should be enforceable, fair, and beneficial to economic wealth, all while maintaining simplicity. But even those who agree on the necessity of these goals often disagree about the hierarchical importance of each. As a result, the tax policies usually represent a portion of each competing goal, leaving no room for simplicity. For example, most countries tailor tax liabilities to the characteristics of the individual taxpayer. That can make taxes more fair, but also more complex. The Sounds of Sonny s Blues Sean Cohen English 1197 Sec 001 April 10th, 2012 The Sounds of Sonny s Blues James Baldwin s Sonny s Blues is a short story focused around the narration of Sonny s brother. The narrator in the case of Sonny s Blues is the most important character in a cast of characters not only because he is the narrator, but due to the dynamic change of his character we see at the end of the story. Baldwin effectively uses the first person narration of Sonny s brother in order to convey the theme of communication. The dynamic character with the most impact in the story is easily the narrator. A dynamic character is a character that undergoes a major change in the story. We see this major change finally come in the last sequence of the story. Sonny and the narrator go to a nightclub where the narrator watches Sonny perform on the piano. This is where the reader finally sees the narrator gain an understanding of his brother. And, while Creole listened, Sonny moved, deep within exactly like someone in torment. I had never before thought of how awful the relationship must be between the musician and his instrument. He has to fill it, this instrument, with the breath of life, his own. (p. 99) The narrator finally understand why Sonny is attracted to music. Music gives him the ability to express himself, to communicate his feelings with others in a way words do not allow. This question can be answered if the author s life is studied and then compared to the work itself. Octavia E. Butler s life and her novel Kindred have remarkable comparisons. This essay will point out important events of Butler s life and how they link to the mentioned novel. Octavia Estelle Butler was born on June 22, 1947 in Pasadena, California (Voices From 1). Science fiction became a false reality for Butler, however she was concerned for the lack of Black characters and the stereotypes that women received in the novels that she read (Black Women 208). These important events were the beginning of the process that would shape her into a feministic science fiction writer. It wasn t until the eighth grade that she realized that she had become a very intelligent young woman (Notable Black 144). Until that point in her life she considered herself as not being very bright but when she started winning the competitions she described it as the first time that I d ever done anything to impress myself (Notable Black 144). It is interesting to consider that she may have been forced out of her dyslexia by the accompaniment of adults and her strange attraction to science fiction novels. However, the consequences of the dyslexia such as shyness and the difficulty to understand still haunted her throughout high school (Notable Black 144). There were many amongst the students ... Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians The characterisitics of the ideal guardian is summarized in those words by Socrates in the second book of the Republic : [H]e who is to be a really good and noble guardian of the State will require to unite in himself philosophy and spirit and swiftness and strength. . . Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to be like a well bred watchdog, who ought to be quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy when they see him, and strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him. The requirement of spirit is then derived from this, because if he is to fight well he ought to be brave, and Socrates finds that he is not likely to be brave who has not ... In short, only virtues which are desirable shall be depicted in their tales, and none that are undesirable which children might imitate. The gymnastic education that Socrates prescribes is not as complicated. He rather merely says that it would be sufficient for their purposes that those being reared to be guardians maintain a healthy diet and follow a simple exercise plan from youth. What is more emphasized by Socrates is that there should be balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be properly harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those who likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. As Socrates says, this ferocity only comes from spirit, which if rightly educated, would give courage, but, if too much intensified, is liable to become hard and brutal. He continues, On the other hand the philosopher will have the quality of gentleness. And this also, when too much indulged, will turn to softness, but, if educated rightly will be gentle and moderate. Thus the traits that make a good guardian are developed and nurtured through a good balance of musical and gymnastic education. That portion in the second book is where the qualities are actually first enumerated. The discussion will deviate a little in the third to the fifth books, and the subject will be brought up again in the sixth book. There Socrates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sister who committed this crime is Antigone, who is also the character that I m contrasting with Creon. Antigone, while being the sibling to the two brothers, is also related to Creon. You would assume this would cause Creon to not consider killing his blood and also is actually his son s bride. Instead, he chooses to be relentless and even tell to her sister, Ismene, Why not? There are other fields for him to plough. This choice was a big contributor to Creon s becoming of a tragic hero. Temperature increases kinetic energy of the molecules, facilatating faster diffusion of particles as particles now have a greater speed and thus more readily diffuse across the membrane. Higher surface area allows for greater diffusion as more particles can enter at once with more room in which to enter. Higher salinity means more particles within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How are gradients important in diffusion and osmosis? Without gradients, diffusion and osmosis would not be possible. This is because diffusion is the movement of particles down concentration gradients and osmosis is the diffusion of water, which means they both require gradients to function. What is the explanation for the fact that most cells are small and have cell membranes with many convolutions? Higher surface area to volume ratio as being small minimizes volume and having many folds maximizes surface area. With a higher surface area, greater diffusion rates can occur as there is a larger area for nutrients and water to pass through. Will water move into or out of a plant cell if the cell has a higher water potential than the surrounding environment? • 38. Social Psychology, The Social Identity Within social psychology, the social identity tradition (Tajfel, Billig, Bundy, Flament, 1971) argues that individuals possess more than their characteristic personal identities, which are activated during interpersonal contact with others; in addition, people can engage in intergroup behavior as informed by their social identities (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). Such social identities comprise memberships in any psychologically relevant grouping with which an individual identifies, including kin, peers, profession, nation, and cultural identity (Galang, Quiñones, Adriano, Portillo, Carvajal, 2015). The ingroup identification afforded by social identities then allows individuals to distinguish between people belonging to and excluded from the ingroup (Brewer Yuki, 2007), and to bolster one s self concept through affiliation with high status groups and individuals (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). In addition, these social identities are created and manifested in different ways across cultures as a function of the values endorsed by society, the ways in which society s members construe themselves, and the manners in which their interpersonal relationships are structured (Feitosa, Salas, Salazar, 2012). Moreover, social identity theory (SIT) has been invoked as an explanation for a social psychological phenomenon introduced in Robert Cialdini and his colleagues (1976) research: basking in reflected glory (BIRG). As reflected in the opening quote, individuals are able to emphasize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Political and Cultural Significance of the Flavian... Assess the political and cultural significance of the construction and initial use of the Colosseum. Throughout the history of Ancient Rome, the construction of public buildings was used as a political tool, to manipulate the views of the people and to demonstrate the power of the State. The very first emperor of Rome, Augustus, initiated social reform through the construction of buildings from 27 BC onwards. Emperor Vespasian in 69 AD used a similar initiative, and throughout Rome s history it can be seen that times of civil unrest are often followed by a flourish in architecture and the arts. An example of this can be seen in one of Vespasian s major building projects, the Colosseum, officially the Flavian Amphitheatre, which had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 79 AD Vespasian came to his final days, dying before the construction of the Colosseum was complete. His son, Titus, was to take over his role as emperor. Titus, new in his role, knew that he too must impress the people as his father had done, and so he announced the opening of the Colosseum would occur one year later. This seemed like an impossible goal for the constructers, and Titus had planned an extravagant opening to ensure that none would think he was less visionary than his father. Upon the opening of the great amphitheatre there were one hundred days of fighting. These one hundred days involved the slaughter of an unfathomable number of animals and men; one source tells us that five thousand animals were killed in the first day. The writer Cassius Dio tells us just how extravagant the opening may have been; Titus suddenly filled this same theatre with water and brought in horses and bulls and some other domesticated animals that had been taught to behave in the liquid element just as on land. He also brought in people on ships, who engaged in a sea fight there, impersonating the Corcyreans and Corinthians. This suggests that Titus had the Colosseum flooded in order to stage a naval battle; however several historians question the technicalities of this, despite the multiple ... • 40. Analysis Of George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion Social standing is central to the plot of George Bernard Shaw s play Pygmalion . The portrayal of class identity in Shaw s play appears to be a criticism of the distinctions between high society and the poorer classes in Victorian England. Shaw s aim was to portray how the upper crust of Victorian society viewed the lower classes, as evidenced by Higgins treatment of Eliza upon her first visit to his laboratory; Higgins treats her as though she is too stupid to understand that he is insulting her. The assumption is that the wealthy view the lower classes as being somehow lesser. So what is it that Shaw is trying to impart upon the reader? Shaw appeared to show open disdain not just for the upper class of society but for society in general, and Pygmalion may be interpreted as an open criticism of class distinctions in Victorian England. Class distinctions are made abundantly clear in Shaw s Pygmalion. Eliza is representative of Shaw s view of the English working class of the day: Crude, crass, and seemingly unintelligent yet worthy of pity. Equal criticism is leveled at the upper classes, who pass judgement upon the poor precipitated by their appearance and mannerisms. Higgins and Pickering s attitude towards Eliza is one of derision, stemming from their difference in social status. For instance, Higgins open mockery of Eliza s speech: You see this creature with her kerbstone English: the English that will keep her in the gutter to the end of her days. (Shaw. ... • 41. Propaganda In The Hitler Youth The pinnacle of the movement is embodied during the raging battles of World War II. At present, it is apparent that the entire barrage of propaganda for seven plus years was in preparation to send German youths, both boys and girls, to both fronts to fight the Allied powers. According to expert David Welch of the BBC, the Nazi usage of propaganda was so persuasive that Hitlerjugend became paramilitary troops who were sent directly to Poland to fight the Soviets as well as to the Rhine region to fend off the Americans. One such propaganda poster depicted a father with a SS armband helping his son shoot a gun, both of them in full military attire, as well as another which, when translated, says, For Freedom and Life; The People s Storm, (see Appendix B) and Welch argued that such encouragement would have filled the youth on the battlefield with drive. The surprising fanaticism and reckless bravado of the Hitler Youth in battle left the Western Allied forces astonished. There were reports of accounts which detailed how the adolescent boys fought till their death without the thought of surrendering; young boys were shot by soldiers who were old enough to be their own fathers. From the D Day and Invasion of Normandy, the Hitlerjugend lost 8000 over the course of six hours. Even boys at the age of seventeen were described as ruthless fighters, who would outfight their fellow adult Nazi soldiers, and this can be directly attributed to their indoctrination. Out of the ... Spike Lee s Do The Right Thing Chris Shea Professor Christine Doyle CINE 201 02/04/16 Screening Report for Spike Lee s Do the Right Thing In the fighting and rioting scenes toward the end of his 1989 film Do the Right Thing, Spike Lee uses the misc en scene and camera angles to demonstrate that racial tensions are still strong between the white police officers of Brooklyn and its black citizens. He accomplishes this through the various actions the police officers take depicting their poor handling of the situation and the effects of it taken on by the black rioters. The first of such scenes depicts how the police handled Radio Raheem in his fight against Sam. It would have been just enough for the cops to just pull Raheem off Sam and place him in handcuffs and then into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Essay On Mercury Pollution Mercury pollution occurs from industrial sources such as mining, power plants and coal combustion centers. When mercury is released from the sources, it can travel halfway around the world before it ever enters into the waterways and contaminates the fish that we then eat. Through the trade of those fish, people in every continent are at risk for mercury pollution. Newborns are also at risk of mercury pollution due to the consummation of fish by their mothers, thousands of babies are at risk every year of impaired motor skills ( Reduce Mercury Pollution ). In order to reduce the pollutants of mercury we need to implement a policy to clean up sites already contaminated, limit the amounts discharged into the water and provide consumers on tips to reduce their exposure to it. My first step in decreasing the amount of mercury is to focus on the areas that are already contaminated. They would priority since the mercury would have had time to sit and settle and we would want to clean it up before it causes further harm. Some of the sites would be cleaned up under the EPA s superfund policy. One example of a site that is being cleaned up is the Carson River Mercury Site in Nevada. This is the former sites of mills and mining that have contaminated the soil, waterways and fish over a 50 mile stretch. Nevada at one time recommended that limited consumption of fish and duck from the river should be in effect. State and federal actions are being performed in order to excavate and remove the contaminated soils and they were sent to a mineral resource recovery facility. That action has already reduced the amount of exposure during the monitoring period and they plan to add a layer of clean topsoil to reduce the exposure to any mercury soil left behind. They have also worked in sampling 26 different developments for mercury affects and levels. They are working on figuring out the cost and benefit of cleaning up the rivers sediment to try to remove the mercury from the river, wetlands and reservoir. In the meantime short term cleanup will be done in order to prevent threats to the population( Carson River Mercury Site ). The second step in my policy to reduce the mercury levels would be to limit the amount of discharge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. A Career As A Radical Feminist Radical feminists have paved the way for so many women to stand up for themselves. Many rights were made available to all women because of radical feminists. Their presence, their energy, their ideology was desperately needed during a difficult time of oppression. Some feminine acts of oppression are still frowned upon today as a form of oppression. I would rather be a bad feminist then to not a feminist at all , a quote by Roxanne Gay, but in this generation why should feminists have to choose between being a good or bad feminist? Radical feminism, starting around the 1960s, sought to eradicate male supremacy. This wave of feminists believe that men are the main source of oppression and if you eliminate patriarchy, then everyone will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Currently, women have more rights than before and we can contribute a part of that to radical feminists. We have so many rights, that radical feminism is no longer the only solution, or even necessary. There are several ways that women, can now, fight oppression. I think a lot of the ideology from radical feminism is still used by feminist today and Gay highlights this problem in Bad Feminist. Feminists denounce other feminists for wanting to engage in activities that radical feminists would not approve of. Which tears down the movement, in my opinion. Anything that is woman like, or typical behavior for women, gets disapproval. There are women who like to do woman things, like cook for the husband, or even get married to a man. These women should not have to choose between being a feminist or not, if they believe in the equality of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
