3. Who is Emperor Qianlong?
Emperor Qianlong (1711 - 1799) is the forth Qing emperor to rule over China,
with Aisin Goorro as his surname, Hongli as the frist name, and emperor
Qianlong as the reign title after his ascending the throne.
Being on the throne for 60 years, Emperor Qianlong, together with his
grandfather - Emperor Kangxi and his father - Emperor Yongzheng, jointly
created the last and the most prosperous age of Chinese feudal dynasties, which is
called ‘Kang-Qian Flourishing Age’ in history.
4. Where did Emperpor Qianlong live?
Emperpor Qianlong lived in the Forbidden City, it was the Chinese imperial
palace. It is located in the middle Beijing, China. The complex consists of 980
buildings with 9999 rooms and covers 720,000m2. For almost 500 years, it served
as the home of emperors and their households.
5. What did Emperor Qianlong do?
Economically, emperor Qianlong encouraged farming and building irrigations works.
Emperor Qianlong was keen on traditional Chinese culture, and he himself was a poet
who composed over 40000 poems in his life.
The most significant of his commissions was a catalogue of all important works on
Chinese culture, the Siku quanshu (四库全书). It is an imperial collection
completed by order of the emperor Qianlong. It produced in 36,000 volumes,
containing about 3450 complete works and employing as 15,000 copyists, the entire work
took around 20 years.
6. Why is Emperor Qianlong
relevant to us today?
The imperial collection of Siku quanshu (四库全书) completed by emperor
Qianlong is still used today.
