Ancillary Task: Analysis
From my previous title sequence analysis I have highlighted several key
areas for the construction of a successful Local TV News intro. Putting this
research into practice I worked with my group to create our own title
sequences. Here is the finished title sequence and analysis of the process
and finished product.
1. News Station name: As a group we chose the following name WMN.
2. After completing some earlier analysis of TV News we decided that
this title would best fit with our research because our broadcast is
going to be focused on west midlands, so it’s only right that we
included ‘West Midland’s in the title. It gives the audience something
they can relate to
(Teacher said and I quote ‘I think it’s a good strong name for a local t.v
news station because I would instantly understand that this was local news,
and the simplicity showcases that this news station is honest and straight
forward, and therefore I assume is going to present honest and straight
forward which Is what I am for in my local news)
2. As a group we then created a Logo based on our name to use within
the title sequence and on our final news programme. This the logo we
created:
Through the use of semiotics companies use their logos to remind their
audience of their services, products and brand.
TV news also uses this technique to remind the viewer who they are.
Evident through our logo, we used the golden circles on the final letter
as a representation of a famous building; the Birmingham library.
New logo
After receiving audience feedback; this was our final
new logo as unlike the previous logo; it does not
exclude or only target a specific region within the
West Midlands; rather it relates to everyone situated
around the West Midlands.
• 3. Through our research into audience theory we studied ‘The Hartley
Classification’ and knew that is was important to appeal to our audience
demographic through these 7 socially grouped categories:
• 1 Self – ambitions or interests of the audience
• 2 Gender
• 3 Age Group
• 4 Class – different social classes e.g. working, upper etc.
• 5 Ethnicity
• 6 Family
• 7 Nation
One of the ways we did this was through our use of still and moving
images, we took various shots and aimed to meet the socially grouped
categories of the Hartley classification theory.
By using famous images of the west midlands, I have appealed to peoples
individuals interests In regards to their local areas. By using still and
moving images of a wide range of genders, age group, classes, and
ethnicities I have appealed to broader target audience. Finally, I have only
used images taken from within the west midlands, as I am aiming to make
it clear that it is local news.
4. Using this work we constructed our TV title sequence in a programme called
Video Studio Pro x8 which is a video editing programme.
We edited together our Logos and footage from our filming day. Trimming
footage, adding transitions, effects and text based on our groups storyboard.
. The transitions we used were cross fade.
The reason we chose these transition was because it stuck to the codes and
conventions of TV news presenting a serious and professional finish. We used
the same transition throughout to keep the continuity.
. The effects and transitions we used on our logos and images were that we
were able to move from one moving or still image, smoothly without the
audience noticing. We used a circles effect on our logo, to mirror the circles of
Birmingham central; library to bring a link between our logo and the city we are
based in. We also chose a gold and beige background as this will be our signature
colour throughout our news programme.
. The length of our title sequence is 20 seconds. This is because during our
market research we found out that the normal TV news title sequence was
between 20/30 seconds.
. We added text of the local areas to appeal to those individuals who may live
within them areas. (this question does not affect all groups)
5. We then added Music to our title sequences.
We chose this music because we felt that it sounded like a TV news
intro. We listened to various pieces of music but felt that this was the
one that the audience could relate to the most. The music we selected
appeals to a wide target audience, it also follows the news values. I have
applied my analysis of music for news intros to my choice in choosing a
piece that demonstrates professionalism and reliability.
 We asked a small focus group for some feedback based
on our title sequences. As a result of the feedback given,
my self and Rob decided to merge our title sequences
using his logo as (the audience preferred this and my
centre section as the audience also preferred this) The
information gathered has been helpful and has help us
to make a batter decision about our title sequence.
7. Based on this feedback we amended our title sequences.
8. I feel I have made a successful title sequence because based on the
research that I have done; within my title sequence I used, Hartley's
classification theory, and the news values of Galtung and Ruge.
9. In preparation for the main task I will use both our groups logo, the
music style and the colours throughout my news broadcast. I will also
use the colours On my top and bottom strips and in the actors clothing
to carry through the continuity.
