Evaluation questions
Music Documentary Rough Royalty Collective- Tamilore Alade
Q1: In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
• Other ways our documentary uses convention of existing
documentaries. Is the use of sound bedding, which is used during
the during the voice over, interview and as a soundtrack for the
beginning of the episode. Sound bedding/track is an instrumental
sound usually from the song that the cast produced or from a
featured song that relates to the genre. We used sound bedding
because it helps the audience capture what is going on.
• Actuality footage was used during the interview of Kayz. Showing the
artist performing on stage. This adds realism to our documentary.
We also used another actuality footage where the group were
performing for a music video in the borough of Abbey wood.
• Text was used during the interview. Which includes the artists name and what they do. This is
a important form, because it gives the audience further information of who they're watching
telling them what their role in Rough Royalty and also makes the characters more easier to
remember.
• Interviews are a very common convention. This allows our cast to speak directly to the
audience, telling them about themselves and experiences. Interviews help to give our
documentary a sense of realism. The interviewee also look into the eye of the interview
while giving there thoughts on the subject. This helped to create more emotion as they
speak.
In our interview it was set up in a room using a white screen background and bright lightning
and the camera remains static to make it look more professional and so it doesn’t distract the
audience from what`s being said, makes it easier to see the cast and offers a clean space to
place in the text.
We also used cutaways during the interview to illustrate what the casts are talking about e.g.
Dans (public relations) interview.
• We used Narrative montage for the introduction by showing different
cuts of what's going to take place in the documentary. There were
numerous shots of the group in different settings and time within the
documentary. Montages in documentaries usually link to what the
narrator or different people in the documentary says. However we
used this technique but also challenged it by using montage to show
iconography images and things that’s going on in the series.
• Another convention that was used is colour bars and “beep” sound
to add emphasis during the interview of Kaysan. The Colour bars
were added during post production, where we censored some of the
language used and redid the interview. Colour bars are usually used
for behind the scenes and for some music documentaries.
• During the end of the series before the advertisement. We used cliff-hanger
footages to add anticipation towards the audience making them want to see
more. This is usually done in tv shows and documentaries to gain the
audiences attention. We included footages of the group meeting a famous
rapper Tinie Tempah and them performing for a music video.
Video of cliff-hanger in
documentary...
• Mise-en-scene has been consistent throughout the documentary, which were
potrayed in the narration, introduction, interview, archive footage.
The mise-en-scene includes:
• Costume- The cast were all black/white to represent the Hip-Hop and grime culture adding realism to
the documentary.
• Lightning- Most documentary use natural lighting. We portrayed natural lighting in some areas. In the
interview we used 2-point soft box lighting equipment which uses white light to make it appear
natural.
• Makeup/hair- documentaries are very natural so we didn’t use any makeup and hair. It was much
preferred for the cast to be themselves.
• Setting/location- the location different areas of south east London. Most documentary usually have a
done in the natural environment. We chose south east London because it relates to the theme of our
documentary of Grime/Hip-Hop
• Camera- was mostly handheld and static for the interview. We also used two camera to show different
POV during the interview.
Q2: How effective is the combination of your main
and ancillary texts?
• For my main product of A2 Media studies. My group and I created a
short documentary within the genre of stereotype and representation
of young black teenage boys.
My documentary had to meet a criteria point:
• 5 mins long
• How black boys are represented in a negative way
• Must present themes and issues
Ancillary task include:
• My magazine TV listing
• My Documentary Channel 4 poster
I did some research on TV listing magazines and looked
into the house style and layout I started looking into
different forms of double page spread TV listing
magazines to help me know how to structure the
magazine.
For the film poster, I looked at different posters from
different channels. I also looked at posters for Channel
4, which were based on mainly on TV shows. But there
were effective to use because they all consisted of the
similar house styles.
• Channel 4 logo on the middle corner
• A main image
• The names of the documentary and date its being
shown.
These are some of the TV listing magazine and
TV posters I've been looking at…
One thing that these double page
spread have in common is use very
large images of the main characters
covering most of the pages. Which
helps to attract the audience.
For the posters I looked mainly into
Channel 4 posters. They had very different
ways of potraying the main image.
Although they used the same Channel 4
logo on the right side. And the name of the
channel with date and time
After researching on existing TV review magazines, I looked into the design
on “Vampire Diaries” and what's its trying to portray. I noticed that the
purpose is to advertise their show. Through using heading, images (main
and secondary), cast names, designs and colour etc. Using these elements
make the poster more attractive, sellable and similar to other products.
Looking at these elements for magazine has helped me to structure my
work in similar ways.
Existing magazine and ancillary
Existing poster and ancillary
The production of poster and TV listing
double page spread (DPS)
To produce the poster and Tv listing magazine I used adobe software. Which include
photoshop, illustrator, and indesign. The Designs where inspired by research into
different existing products. It was very important for us to design a product that
looks similar and carried a house colour and style throughout.
I edited the photograph for the tv listing magazine using magic wand to be able to
use the background of Woolwich to represent where the documentary is talking
place. Photoshop was used for editing the photographs and Indesign was used to
include text and organise the layout.
When comparing my documentary to the poster and TV listing pages. I think that the most
effective and strongest is the documentary because the film uses good iconography and
language to explore the themes and issues of representation/stereotypes in more detail.
Making the audience connect to the casts and have a better understanding. However I feel
that the magazine and poster adds more the film as these two elements are vital parts of the
production as a whole. As both emphasis the genre of Hip-Hop giving the reader the reason
to watch the documentary.
The use of synergy (which is the combination of two or more products which are linked
together and are used to boost and promote each other). The style guide which usually
consist of black and white because it’s the colour represented in Grime culture. Its used in all
of the products including the documentary.
• In the TV magazine DPS uses mainly white for the text in the columns. The white can be easier seen over the
dark background compared to using black. I used black colour “Big” to emphasis how important inspiration is.
This also helps the headline stand out more.
• The poster is in black and white, to create mysterious feel. The picture is in black and white to make the logo and
text stand out more. It also fits the theme on grime culture.
• For the documentary series, we used some aspects of black and white text and elements. For the Rough Royalty
glitch transition, the names of cast and the costume and white background, it showed elements of style guide
colours.
I believe that the main task links well with
the ancillary products and the ancillary
products linked with each other.
Although each ancillary are used to target the
audience in different ways. The poster is used
to attract the audiences attention and the TV
listing magazine is used to give the audience
a bit of information on what`s the
documentary is about.
Q3. What have you learned from your audience
feedback?
We showed our final documentary to a large audience during creative arts evening including our target
audience. The Rough Royalty Collective also came to watch our documentary and give us feedback. We asked
them “What do you think of the documentary?” and “How can it be improved?”. Most of the feedback were
positive…these are videos of the feedback we got from the group….
Temi- Public relations Ugo- Artist (rapper)
Temi- Public relations
We also gave out feedback forms to the audience to tell us what they
thought of the documentary. These are a few quotes told by them:
• “They should show more passion and emotion”
This was a fair point because the cast seemed quite nervous during the interview. But we
couldn’t there made because the interview was supposed to be natural and realist. Although, if
the interview was talking in a more natural setting e.g. studio, in home or in a basketball
court. It might make them feel more comfortable and change their moods.
• “It could have improve to add more shots to back up with they were saying”. I agree to this
point because most of the shots used during the interview didn’t link with what they said
because some of them were quite random. Which was also shown in the narration montage
as well. However some shots, including the closing narration used evidence that link the
what the narrator said about what was coming up next.
• “Narrator was too loud and the interviewees seemed depressed”. I disagree with this view.
This is because when the audience watched the documentary in the hall it was done using
loud speakers so it can be heard over noise. If the speakers were turned down it wouldn’t
seem so loud. And during the process of recording the voice over, Sam used a clear calm
voice and the editing process was done so that the audience can be able to here the voice
over the sound bedding/track.
Overall I was pleased by most of the feedback we received from the group and the
audience we showed our video to, as a high number of the comments were positive. I
think few negative comments were relating to things that we couldn’t control e.g the
mood of the characters and the camera quality for the archive footage. Which I feel
wasn’t very important because its meant to represent an old footage of them
performing on stage and can be difficult to re-film because we have to plan out
another time for the group to perform live.
I think that the process of receiving feedback on my documentary, I have learnt a lot
on how to make documentaries in the future. The main thing ive learnt is the type of
elements used, that makes up a music documentary. And how to put everything
together including the media text in order to attract your target audience.
An example of this is used in the narrators script to get the viewers attention. By
using words like “Are hoping of becoming part of Hip-Hop history”. This use of words
catch the audiences attention because itll make the audience want to question how
the Rough Royalty group will achieve that goal. We also used languages like
“Inspiration” and “stereotype” which are important themes in our documentary that
we`d try to cover. Some members of the audience got the message of what we were
trying to portray wrong because our documentary was supposed to show how young
black males are stereotyped as loud and aggressive. But they thought we were trying
to represent them in the way that young black males are stereotyped in. But we were
only showing their personalities.
Q4: How did you use new media technologies in the
construction research, planning and evaluation stages?
While in the planning and research stage, I used a variety of different
programmes and website…
Research
When researching Hip-Hop music documentaries, I looked onto the google search
engine and found most Music documentaries on YouTube. I also looked on google
to search for photos of Hip-Hop/grime artists from my genre. I had information on
artist like JME and section boys. I also looked onto Google to research topics such
as High and folk culture, Frankfurt school, Adorno and cultural trends relating to
fashion. I also used Google to research images of existing products for my
ancillary task to help us decide the layout of our products.
Research and Planning
We used blogger for our advanced portfolio to write about our process of our work from the
researching stages, introduction to the final video and evaluation. Blogger was very easy
to use compared to using kite last year for AS media. It allowed me to organise each area
and keep track of my progress.
It was useful because we could be able to input photographers, YouTube videos, prezis,
links and other forms of media to show where we got the form of information from.
We were told to use blogger like a diary, to do constant updating of our progress after
shooting and editing every week.
The only problem with using blogger is that after publishing the blog it the images and text
disperse from where I place them when editing my blog. Which makes it appear
unorganised.
Research and Planning
Microsoft office helped me during my project. It was useful and easy to access and use.
I used Microsoft excel when I design my production schedule. It made it look more simpler
to understand what we needed to complete during those following weeks.
Microsoft word was one of the software we used for most of our planning and research
stages before putting it into our blogs. As it helped us to write drafts for our narration
script and Interview script. It also allowed me to plan out my blog post for Cultural trends
and mass culture before doing it onto Prezi for Blog.
Research and Planning
Prezi is a free and creative presentation tool. I used this to presenting some of the
themes for my Advanced portfolio including The male gaze, High and folk culture,
and our introduction for the pitch presentation.
I found using Prezi useful because it was easy to use. It also allowed me to include
different media e.g. videos, Images , voice over, sound track and links which makes
my work look more visual appealing.
When I was researching I used other students Prezi to help me know how to layout my
work.
The problem with using Prezi is that it is web-based. Meaning that it can only be used
when I have internet access. If the internet is inaccessible, the Prezi takes a while to
load and freezes up . However, there were times where I couldn't access the internet
and had to wait awhile for the wifi to connect.
Slide Share provides a range of work from previous students, which i found very
helpful because they gave very decent information to help with my research on for my
magazine and poster conventions.
Mobile phone and Laptop- research
and planning
My phone was useful in taken clear pictures during the planning stage. I used my phone to take
photographs of location for the setting of the documentary. I also used it for the behind the
scenes, that I used for my blog and taking pictures of. My phone is an I phone 5 so it could
take very clear photos which can be quickly sent onto the internet by using wifi connection.
The problems with using my phone was that the storage was very limited with only a small
space. I could only save a minimal amount of photographs onto it. And my phone was didnt
have Bluetooth to send the photos and videos in that particular moment, and can only be sent
in places with free connection.
I used my laptop to do a lot of research at home. I was able to go onto Youtube and listen and
watch music documentaries in my spare time to be able to get an idea of how the
documentary should be like.
Software and equipments
Software- Research and planningPhotoshop- This was used during the construction of the Poster and TV listing magazine. When edited the images I could be able to remove the
background using magic -wand/quick selection tool. And I could also be able to change the filter and lighting of the image to suit the
background.
Indesign- In Indesign I used a margin and columns to know how to layout the elements on the page. This made my work look more organised. I
could also include text which I could adjust by changing the size or position.
Premiere Pro- To edit our video, we used Premiere Pro, which is a timeline based video editing software application. It has high resolution video
editing and can be used for any kind of PC with video editing card and plug-ins. We used “soundbedding”, which was used during the
interview and narration And we also used it to match frames together e.g. In the interview we used two camera which were in different
position. In Premiere we matched the two shots together.
After-effects- After Effects compositions can live in a Premiere Pro sequence. Changes made in After Effects are immediately reflected in Premiere Pro using
Dynamic Link. This technology gives you a render-free editing and graphics workflow. In after effects we rendered the title name of Rough Royalty Collective,
using glitch transition special effects and added sound . In the next page it shows our introducing title ...
What I like about using these Adobe softwares is that all integrate with each other. Photoshop can be opened directly onto Indesign and After
effects can be opened onto Premiere pro. And any changes that is made on the images from Photoshop can immediately be updated when its
saved.
Glitch transition video on After-effects
Equipments- Research and planning
DSLR video camera/ DSLR Camcorder- We used two different cameras during the
production. The camcorder was used in school where we shot the interview and
photoshoots. Whereas the video camera ( which was owned by a member of our group)
was used to take videos outside the school in our chosen locations e.g. Abbeywood,
Woolwich and Thamesmead. The cameras was a important part of the production, which
we needed to use to be able to capture all the footage for the documentary. The school`s
camcorder helped make the video look HD quality making it look professional. The video
camera also provided HD quality, although it was much preferred to use the camcorder.
Tripod- The tripod helped to keep the camera more stable than it being hand-held during
filming. We got a more clearer shot using the tripod. Although the tripod was only used for
the interview and the camera was hand-held most of the time. Because from research we
found out that most music documentaries are usually handheld because it allows a
greater freedom of motion during our filming. Because the documentary is not scripted so
this allows us to track the cast much easier.
Evaluation- Blogger
• Blogger was used for recording down the process of production. From pre-
production to post-production. Which includes the planning, research, filming
and editing. And what we have done throughout this process.
• Blogger was created by Google which makes it trustworthy to use and easy to
access, with only writing in the login for my Google account. It can be used on
any devices and like my I Pad, I phone, IPod touch, Laptop etc.
• I kept my blog up-to-date every week. Including new resources that we received
when filming and editing.
• I tried to summarise it not create a lot of paragraphs. I used links to Prezi, that
helped to not take too much space and other edits like embedded videos from my
chosen genre on YouTube or from my documentary.
• I did a lot of analysis for my project including the ancillary task. Where I
explained what conventions were used existing products and how I used it my
design. This was done to make the idea clearer.
• It was hard for me to organise my blog posts, as I was unable to change the
order.
Evaluation- PowerPoint/slideshare
For my evaluation I used PowerPoint and slide share to map out my visual presentation which
was posted onto my blog. I had to convert to slide share in order to be shared to my blog.
We also got an option of using Prezi for our evaluation, the problem with using this it can
only be accessed with good internet connection but my connection was very poor. Which is
why I used PowerPoint.
PowerPoint and Slide share are both easy to use and also makes the presentation look more
interesting through the use of multimedia which can help the audience focus. In PowerPoint,
I am also able to use images, audio and video to have a greater visual impact.
It also uses media content sharing this allows it to be uploaded to websites like YouTube, with
everything featured in your work including all of the slides, commentary and transitions. And
you can also change the PowerPoint into other formats like PDF which allows it to be viewed
on a Website page online.
Prezi is an convenient website as it allows you to add description/title and caption to the
uploaded PowerPoint to present a clearer understanding for the audience.

A2 Media Evaluation music Documentary

  • 1. Evaluation questions Music Documentary Rough Royalty Collective- Tamilore Alade
  • 2. Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 3. • Other ways our documentary uses convention of existing documentaries. Is the use of sound bedding, which is used during the during the voice over, interview and as a soundtrack for the beginning of the episode. Sound bedding/track is an instrumental sound usually from the song that the cast produced or from a featured song that relates to the genre. We used sound bedding because it helps the audience capture what is going on. • Actuality footage was used during the interview of Kayz. Showing the artist performing on stage. This adds realism to our documentary. We also used another actuality footage where the group were performing for a music video in the borough of Abbey wood.
  • 4. • Text was used during the interview. Which includes the artists name and what they do. This is a important form, because it gives the audience further information of who they're watching telling them what their role in Rough Royalty and also makes the characters more easier to remember. • Interviews are a very common convention. This allows our cast to speak directly to the audience, telling them about themselves and experiences. Interviews help to give our documentary a sense of realism. The interviewee also look into the eye of the interview while giving there thoughts on the subject. This helped to create more emotion as they speak. In our interview it was set up in a room using a white screen background and bright lightning and the camera remains static to make it look more professional and so it doesn’t distract the audience from what`s being said, makes it easier to see the cast and offers a clean space to place in the text. We also used cutaways during the interview to illustrate what the casts are talking about e.g. Dans (public relations) interview.
  • 5. • We used Narrative montage for the introduction by showing different cuts of what's going to take place in the documentary. There were numerous shots of the group in different settings and time within the documentary. Montages in documentaries usually link to what the narrator or different people in the documentary says. However we used this technique but also challenged it by using montage to show iconography images and things that’s going on in the series. • Another convention that was used is colour bars and “beep” sound to add emphasis during the interview of Kaysan. The Colour bars were added during post production, where we censored some of the language used and redid the interview. Colour bars are usually used for behind the scenes and for some music documentaries.
  • 6. • During the end of the series before the advertisement. We used cliff-hanger footages to add anticipation towards the audience making them want to see more. This is usually done in tv shows and documentaries to gain the audiences attention. We included footages of the group meeting a famous rapper Tinie Tempah and them performing for a music video. Video of cliff-hanger in documentary...
  • 7. • Mise-en-scene has been consistent throughout the documentary, which were potrayed in the narration, introduction, interview, archive footage. The mise-en-scene includes: • Costume- The cast were all black/white to represent the Hip-Hop and grime culture adding realism to the documentary. • Lightning- Most documentary use natural lighting. We portrayed natural lighting in some areas. In the interview we used 2-point soft box lighting equipment which uses white light to make it appear natural. • Makeup/hair- documentaries are very natural so we didn’t use any makeup and hair. It was much preferred for the cast to be themselves. • Setting/location- the location different areas of south east London. Most documentary usually have a done in the natural environment. We chose south east London because it relates to the theme of our documentary of Grime/Hip-Hop • Camera- was mostly handheld and static for the interview. We also used two camera to show different POV during the interview.
  • 8. Q2: How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts? • For my main product of A2 Media studies. My group and I created a short documentary within the genre of stereotype and representation of young black teenage boys. My documentary had to meet a criteria point: • 5 mins long • How black boys are represented in a negative way • Must present themes and issues
  • 9. Ancillary task include: • My magazine TV listing • My Documentary Channel 4 poster I did some research on TV listing magazines and looked into the house style and layout I started looking into different forms of double page spread TV listing magazines to help me know how to structure the magazine. For the film poster, I looked at different posters from different channels. I also looked at posters for Channel 4, which were based on mainly on TV shows. But there were effective to use because they all consisted of the similar house styles. • Channel 4 logo on the middle corner • A main image • The names of the documentary and date its being shown.
  • 10. These are some of the TV listing magazine and TV posters I've been looking at… One thing that these double page spread have in common is use very large images of the main characters covering most of the pages. Which helps to attract the audience. For the posters I looked mainly into Channel 4 posters. They had very different ways of potraying the main image. Although they used the same Channel 4 logo on the right side. And the name of the channel with date and time
  • 11. After researching on existing TV review magazines, I looked into the design on “Vampire Diaries” and what's its trying to portray. I noticed that the purpose is to advertise their show. Through using heading, images (main and secondary), cast names, designs and colour etc. Using these elements make the poster more attractive, sellable and similar to other products. Looking at these elements for magazine has helped me to structure my work in similar ways. Existing magazine and ancillary
  • 12. Existing poster and ancillary
  • 13. The production of poster and TV listing double page spread (DPS) To produce the poster and Tv listing magazine I used adobe software. Which include photoshop, illustrator, and indesign. The Designs where inspired by research into different existing products. It was very important for us to design a product that looks similar and carried a house colour and style throughout. I edited the photograph for the tv listing magazine using magic wand to be able to use the background of Woolwich to represent where the documentary is talking place. Photoshop was used for editing the photographs and Indesign was used to include text and organise the layout.
  • 14. When comparing my documentary to the poster and TV listing pages. I think that the most effective and strongest is the documentary because the film uses good iconography and language to explore the themes and issues of representation/stereotypes in more detail. Making the audience connect to the casts and have a better understanding. However I feel that the magazine and poster adds more the film as these two elements are vital parts of the production as a whole. As both emphasis the genre of Hip-Hop giving the reader the reason to watch the documentary. The use of synergy (which is the combination of two or more products which are linked together and are used to boost and promote each other). The style guide which usually consist of black and white because it’s the colour represented in Grime culture. Its used in all of the products including the documentary. • In the TV magazine DPS uses mainly white for the text in the columns. The white can be easier seen over the dark background compared to using black. I used black colour “Big” to emphasis how important inspiration is. This also helps the headline stand out more. • The poster is in black and white, to create mysterious feel. The picture is in black and white to make the logo and text stand out more. It also fits the theme on grime culture. • For the documentary series, we used some aspects of black and white text and elements. For the Rough Royalty glitch transition, the names of cast and the costume and white background, it showed elements of style guide colours.
  • 15. I believe that the main task links well with the ancillary products and the ancillary products linked with each other. Although each ancillary are used to target the audience in different ways. The poster is used to attract the audiences attention and the TV listing magazine is used to give the audience a bit of information on what`s the documentary is about.
  • 16. Q3. What have you learned from your audience feedback? We showed our final documentary to a large audience during creative arts evening including our target audience. The Rough Royalty Collective also came to watch our documentary and give us feedback. We asked them “What do you think of the documentary?” and “How can it be improved?”. Most of the feedback were positive…these are videos of the feedback we got from the group…. Temi- Public relations Ugo- Artist (rapper)
  • 18. We also gave out feedback forms to the audience to tell us what they thought of the documentary. These are a few quotes told by them:
  • 19. • “They should show more passion and emotion” This was a fair point because the cast seemed quite nervous during the interview. But we couldn’t there made because the interview was supposed to be natural and realist. Although, if the interview was talking in a more natural setting e.g. studio, in home or in a basketball court. It might make them feel more comfortable and change their moods. • “It could have improve to add more shots to back up with they were saying”. I agree to this point because most of the shots used during the interview didn’t link with what they said because some of them were quite random. Which was also shown in the narration montage as well. However some shots, including the closing narration used evidence that link the what the narrator said about what was coming up next. • “Narrator was too loud and the interviewees seemed depressed”. I disagree with this view. This is because when the audience watched the documentary in the hall it was done using loud speakers so it can be heard over noise. If the speakers were turned down it wouldn’t seem so loud. And during the process of recording the voice over, Sam used a clear calm voice and the editing process was done so that the audience can be able to here the voice over the sound bedding/track.
  • 20. Overall I was pleased by most of the feedback we received from the group and the audience we showed our video to, as a high number of the comments were positive. I think few negative comments were relating to things that we couldn’t control e.g the mood of the characters and the camera quality for the archive footage. Which I feel wasn’t very important because its meant to represent an old footage of them performing on stage and can be difficult to re-film because we have to plan out another time for the group to perform live. I think that the process of receiving feedback on my documentary, I have learnt a lot on how to make documentaries in the future. The main thing ive learnt is the type of elements used, that makes up a music documentary. And how to put everything together including the media text in order to attract your target audience. An example of this is used in the narrators script to get the viewers attention. By using words like “Are hoping of becoming part of Hip-Hop history”. This use of words catch the audiences attention because itll make the audience want to question how the Rough Royalty group will achieve that goal. We also used languages like “Inspiration” and “stereotype” which are important themes in our documentary that we`d try to cover. Some members of the audience got the message of what we were trying to portray wrong because our documentary was supposed to show how young black males are stereotyped as loud and aggressive. But they thought we were trying to represent them in the way that young black males are stereotyped in. But we were only showing their personalities.
  • 21. Q4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction research, planning and evaluation stages? While in the planning and research stage, I used a variety of different programmes and website…
  • 22. Research When researching Hip-Hop music documentaries, I looked onto the google search engine and found most Music documentaries on YouTube. I also looked on google to search for photos of Hip-Hop/grime artists from my genre. I had information on artist like JME and section boys. I also looked onto Google to research topics such as High and folk culture, Frankfurt school, Adorno and cultural trends relating to fashion. I also used Google to research images of existing products for my ancillary task to help us decide the layout of our products.
  • 23. Research and Planning We used blogger for our advanced portfolio to write about our process of our work from the researching stages, introduction to the final video and evaluation. Blogger was very easy to use compared to using kite last year for AS media. It allowed me to organise each area and keep track of my progress. It was useful because we could be able to input photographers, YouTube videos, prezis, links and other forms of media to show where we got the form of information from. We were told to use blogger like a diary, to do constant updating of our progress after shooting and editing every week. The only problem with using blogger is that after publishing the blog it the images and text disperse from where I place them when editing my blog. Which makes it appear unorganised.
  • 24. Research and Planning Microsoft office helped me during my project. It was useful and easy to access and use. I used Microsoft excel when I design my production schedule. It made it look more simpler to understand what we needed to complete during those following weeks. Microsoft word was one of the software we used for most of our planning and research stages before putting it into our blogs. As it helped us to write drafts for our narration script and Interview script. It also allowed me to plan out my blog post for Cultural trends and mass culture before doing it onto Prezi for Blog.
  • 25. Research and Planning Prezi is a free and creative presentation tool. I used this to presenting some of the themes for my Advanced portfolio including The male gaze, High and folk culture, and our introduction for the pitch presentation. I found using Prezi useful because it was easy to use. It also allowed me to include different media e.g. videos, Images , voice over, sound track and links which makes my work look more visual appealing. When I was researching I used other students Prezi to help me know how to layout my work. The problem with using Prezi is that it is web-based. Meaning that it can only be used when I have internet access. If the internet is inaccessible, the Prezi takes a while to load and freezes up . However, there were times where I couldn't access the internet and had to wait awhile for the wifi to connect. Slide Share provides a range of work from previous students, which i found very helpful because they gave very decent information to help with my research on for my magazine and poster conventions.
  • 26. Mobile phone and Laptop- research and planning My phone was useful in taken clear pictures during the planning stage. I used my phone to take photographs of location for the setting of the documentary. I also used it for the behind the scenes, that I used for my blog and taking pictures of. My phone is an I phone 5 so it could take very clear photos which can be quickly sent onto the internet by using wifi connection. The problems with using my phone was that the storage was very limited with only a small space. I could only save a minimal amount of photographs onto it. And my phone was didnt have Bluetooth to send the photos and videos in that particular moment, and can only be sent in places with free connection. I used my laptop to do a lot of research at home. I was able to go onto Youtube and listen and watch music documentaries in my spare time to be able to get an idea of how the documentary should be like.
  • 28. Software- Research and planningPhotoshop- This was used during the construction of the Poster and TV listing magazine. When edited the images I could be able to remove the background using magic -wand/quick selection tool. And I could also be able to change the filter and lighting of the image to suit the background. Indesign- In Indesign I used a margin and columns to know how to layout the elements on the page. This made my work look more organised. I could also include text which I could adjust by changing the size or position. Premiere Pro- To edit our video, we used Premiere Pro, which is a timeline based video editing software application. It has high resolution video editing and can be used for any kind of PC with video editing card and plug-ins. We used “soundbedding”, which was used during the interview and narration And we also used it to match frames together e.g. In the interview we used two camera which were in different position. In Premiere we matched the two shots together. After-effects- After Effects compositions can live in a Premiere Pro sequence. Changes made in After Effects are immediately reflected in Premiere Pro using Dynamic Link. This technology gives you a render-free editing and graphics workflow. In after effects we rendered the title name of Rough Royalty Collective, using glitch transition special effects and added sound . In the next page it shows our introducing title ... What I like about using these Adobe softwares is that all integrate with each other. Photoshop can be opened directly onto Indesign and After effects can be opened onto Premiere pro. And any changes that is made on the images from Photoshop can immediately be updated when its saved.
  • 29. Glitch transition video on After-effects
  • 30. Equipments- Research and planning DSLR video camera/ DSLR Camcorder- We used two different cameras during the production. The camcorder was used in school where we shot the interview and photoshoots. Whereas the video camera ( which was owned by a member of our group) was used to take videos outside the school in our chosen locations e.g. Abbeywood, Woolwich and Thamesmead. The cameras was a important part of the production, which we needed to use to be able to capture all the footage for the documentary. The school`s camcorder helped make the video look HD quality making it look professional. The video camera also provided HD quality, although it was much preferred to use the camcorder. Tripod- The tripod helped to keep the camera more stable than it being hand-held during filming. We got a more clearer shot using the tripod. Although the tripod was only used for the interview and the camera was hand-held most of the time. Because from research we found out that most music documentaries are usually handheld because it allows a greater freedom of motion during our filming. Because the documentary is not scripted so this allows us to track the cast much easier.
  • 31. Evaluation- Blogger • Blogger was used for recording down the process of production. From pre- production to post-production. Which includes the planning, research, filming and editing. And what we have done throughout this process. • Blogger was created by Google which makes it trustworthy to use and easy to access, with only writing in the login for my Google account. It can be used on any devices and like my I Pad, I phone, IPod touch, Laptop etc. • I kept my blog up-to-date every week. Including new resources that we received when filming and editing. • I tried to summarise it not create a lot of paragraphs. I used links to Prezi, that helped to not take too much space and other edits like embedded videos from my chosen genre on YouTube or from my documentary. • I did a lot of analysis for my project including the ancillary task. Where I explained what conventions were used existing products and how I used it my design. This was done to make the idea clearer. • It was hard for me to organise my blog posts, as I was unable to change the order.
  • 32. Evaluation- PowerPoint/slideshare For my evaluation I used PowerPoint and slide share to map out my visual presentation which was posted onto my blog. I had to convert to slide share in order to be shared to my blog. We also got an option of using Prezi for our evaluation, the problem with using this it can only be accessed with good internet connection but my connection was very poor. Which is why I used PowerPoint. PowerPoint and Slide share are both easy to use and also makes the presentation look more interesting through the use of multimedia which can help the audience focus. In PowerPoint, I am also able to use images, audio and video to have a greater visual impact. It also uses media content sharing this allows it to be uploaded to websites like YouTube, with everything featured in your work including all of the slides, commentary and transitions. And you can also change the PowerPoint into other formats like PDF which allows it to be viewed on a Website page online. Prezi is an convenient website as it allows you to add description/title and caption to the uploaded PowerPoint to present a clearer understanding for the audience.
