From my previous title sequence analysis I have highlighted
several key areas for the construction of a successful Local TV
News intro. Putting this research into practice I worked with my
group to create our own title sequences. Here is the finished title
sequence and analysis of the process and finished product.
1. News Station name: As a group we chose the following
name: “Prime Central” .
After completing some earlier analysis of TV News we decided
that this title would best fit with our research because it is during
prime time and so the word prime relates to this, the central means
that we are the ‘hub’ or ‘central’ place to find news.
Ancillary Task: Analysis
2. As a group we then created a Logo based on our name to use
within the title sequence and on our final news programme. This
consisted of “PC”, a map of England with the west midlands
highlighted and a globe within the C.
Through the use of semiotics companies use their logos to remind
their audience of their services, products and brand.
TV news also uses this technique to remind the viewer who they
are.
• 3. Through our research into audience theory we studied ‘The
Hartley Classification’ and knew that is was important to appeal to
our audience demographic through these 7 socially grouped
categories:
• 1 Self – ambitions or interests of the audience
• 2 Gender
• 3 Age Group
• 4 Class – different social classes e.g. working, upper etc.
• 5 Ethnicity
• 6 Family
• 7 Nation
One of the ways we did this was through our use of still and moving
images, in our bug and logo the west midlands is highlighted on a map
of England, this relates to the nation of the audience, I also took
primary picture of landmarks around the area to use in my title
sequence.
Both of these pictures are
iconic places in
Birmingham city centre
and instantly relate to the
area.
4. Using this work we constructed our TV title sequence in a programme
called Video Studio Pro x8 which is a video editing programme.
We edited together our Logos and footage from our filming day. Trimming
footage, adding transitions, effects and text based on our groups storyboard.
. The transitions we used were fades, cuts, wipe.
The reason we chose these transition was because they were quick and sharp
which complimented the style of the news intro.
. The effects and transitions we used on our logos and images were, a god ray
on the map of the UK to highlight the area where the news is located. A
animated globe was added in the C which rotates, a vignette is applied to the
PC to make it more subtle and professional
The reason we chose these was because it gave a professional, simplistic look
to the logo, and made the brand recognisable.
. The length of our title sequence is 20 seconds. This is because we wanted the
sequence to contain a lot of information and pictures but in a short period of
time, this is how the majority of professional news channels approach their
intro so seemed like the best way to replicate something similar.
5. We then added Music to our title sequences.
We chose this music because it seemed to follow the conventions
of other news shows.
It fits our brand of news programme as it grabs the attention of
the audience, unlike morning news intros which are more quite
and lengthy. This relates to semiotics as we are using non-verbal
communication through symbols used and the music that this is a
news programme.
6. Once our title sequences were completed we asked
an audience panel to review our intro and give feed
back.
7. Based on this feedback we amended our title sequences.
8. I feel I have made a successful title sequence because it
conforms to the codes and conventions of many news programmes
but done to a high standard.
9. In preparation for the main task I will use both our groups
logo, the music style and the three different shades of blue as our
house style. On my top and bottom strips and in the actors
clothing to carry through the continuity.
