Good Vs. Evil In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Themes of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American Writer, born in the 1800s. His family has a strong, strict puritan belief, which is why he writes about Puritanism
in his stories, and why more than half of his novels are centered around it. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is a story that illustrates different
pieces of Puritanism. The novel is based on it's main character, Hester Prynne, and the sin she committed before the novel even begins. Hawthorne's
novel shows how one sin can escalate into how the person behind the sin is lost. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his characters to develop the themes of
strength, good versus evil, and sin versus purity to create a strikingly historical tragedy. Nathaniel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hester Prynne is considered to be evil because of the sin she committed. The people of the town consider themselves as the "good" citizens of the
puritan society. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his writing skills and tone to bring this theme to life. Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale's act of
adultery is obviously seen as sinful in God's eyes and the puritan society, yet they are still beneficial to their community. They suffer the consequences
of the sin, Hester publicly and Dimmesdale in secret. They continue to using their citizenship in positive ways. Hawthorne describes Hester as a
humble woman that is caring and helpful to anyone in their society, and Dimmesdale's profession is a high–level pastor in Boston. The theme of good
is represented in how everyone treats one another. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays evil in other characters throughout the novel. One of the main
antagonists in the novel is Roger Chillingworth. He is considered to be the most evil person in the story because he devoted his entire life to torturing
his wife's lover for the transgression of adultery they committed. The theme of good versus evil clashes the most on this specific topic in the

Summary Of Soakanon: The Goddess Of The Sky
It is said by combining all of the good in the world, it will still create some bad. And with that in mind, the world produced the purest women ever
created. And with her came the ugliest, meanest woman. At first they fought over silly things such as who could survive the longest, and who was
the prettiest (which the first born won every time1). However, as they grew older, they began to fight over property and leadership. The second
born lost everything, and began to cheat. But Kwanita (2) saw everything, and noticed right away. So she gave the first born godly powers, and
declared her "Soakanon: The Goddess of The Sky". And by the means of jealousy and envy, the second born tried to steal her godly powers.
Nevertheless, each try brought failure and a stronger will to win; desperateness. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She tried to train her in the ways of evil, and Soyala learned, but still remembered training with Soakanon (7). One night, Soyala asked about
Soakanon to Piapot, saying they looked and acted alike. Piapot, angry, struck Soyala with blue lightning (8). Because Soyala was a god, it did not
kill him, though instead sent him to Kwanita to be revived. Kwanita became disappointed and bored. She promised that whoever killed the other
sister, would receive their greatest want: Soakanon wanted Soyala back, and Piapot wanted the power of both sisters. So to avoid her sister,
Soakanon began to live in the god's dimension and sealed it off to Piapot. She watched the people live, and did her job each day, to create the rain.
Piapot tried to get closer to her sister. She stole a single strand of light, and using her powers, turned it into darkness. She named him Aeternis
Tenebris. Soakanon felt this, as this strand of light was her faithful servant (9). Soakanon begged Kwanita for her servant back, so she promised that if
she made a recipe with the elements in it, she would be allowed to have AT (10)

The Life Of Jeffrey Wimson
In a large town in urban Nebraska lived a tall, lanky kid with sandy blond hair and acne named Wes. Wes Nelson was a sophomore in high school
and had always dreamed about playing for their state number one five years in a row golf team. Wes would always see the varsity golf players in
the hall of the school and gawk at them as if they were greek gods themselves. They just seemed so perfect to him. First there was Jeffrey Wimson,
the varsity number six. Jeffrey was a 5' 10'' junior with chiseled features from playing on the football team, and a perfect shiny black beard. Jeffery
was a ladies man, always could be seen in the halls with at least one or two bodacious women under his arms. Next there was Keenan Jenski, A junior

skin, a sly smile, chiseled features, ocean blue eyes, and a golf game that would blow you away. Dustin was a super respectful, and would always
help everyone at practice before he would even begin. He was truly an amazing role model, one that Wes has looked up to his entire life. Wes had
earned his way on to the JV team for Dellburg high this year and is the number one spot, which is no easy task in itself. Every player on the Varsity
roster shoots consistently in a range from 67 to 73. Wes was about a two handicap which means he shoots a range from about 74 to 79. Ever since
Wes was a young boy he had always had aspirations to play for this prestigious team. He had practiced day and night for years trying to accomplish
this one goal. It always came down to the same thing that was holding him back, putting. Wes could hit the ball like no ones business always putting
himself into great position to score, but never being able to make the clutch putts to put himself into the low 70's range. Wes would always have coach
Wilder, the JV coach, help him during practice on short and long lag

College Admissions Essay: Best Friend
My so–called "Best Friend"
How would you feel if someone you had trusted betrayed you? Made you feel like rotting garbage every single day of your freaking life. Kept on
saying, I'm trying to help you, when really they hated the way you dressed, they hated your personality, and they just hated you. What would happen if
that spoiled brat was your so–called "BFF", "Best Friend", or even "Sister"? Every single day of the fourth grade to fifth grade was another day to think
about what would happen if I said "I was too busy" or "I had something to do last week" or even "I had a dentist appointment that day". Every single

but she also lied about my other friends. She made rumors about me. She called me spoiled, stupid, and an awful friend. She told me directly to my

O' Conner uses the grandmother and the Misift to illustrate society's attitudes towards family relationships (Fite). The senseless violence is used
to create an emotional shock to the reader. With the shock in place, the author utilizes irony to make it clear to the reader that Southern societal
views are illogical to any competent person. Furthermore, O'Conner uses the development of the characters to support her critical view of the
South. Through the use of macabre and irony, the author clearly employs the elements of Southern Gothic literature to emphasizes the moral
blindness of the grandmother. Flannery O'Conner utilizes the elements of macabre and irony in Good Country People to criticize her view of
religious principals in the South. The story focuses on a girl named Joy Hopewell who strives to gain her mother's approval. When she does not
get it, Joy believes she is not worthy of admiration from anyone. Joy changes her name to Hulga thinking "she had hit upon the ugliest name in any
language" as a direct result of her mother's disapproval (O'Conner 223). Joy goes on to meet a bible salesman, Manley Pointer who ultimately tricks
her into having sex with him by telling her she is beautiful. Joy immediately falls for Pointer as she has never been admired by anyone before.
Pointer goes as far as to ask Joy to remove her wooden leg, a request that would be emotionally shocking to

history. The greatest instance where Wicca phobia had gotten out of hand was The Salem Witch Trials. The Salem witch trials began February 29, "in
colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft–the Devil 's magic–and 20 were
executed." They took place in Salem at a site called Proctor's Ledge contrary to the older recognized location which was Gallows Hill. As stated by
The History Channel "In January 1692, 9–year–old Elizabeth (Betty) Parris and 11–year–old Abigail Williams (the daughter and niece of Samuel
Parris, minister of Salem Village) began having fits, including violent contortions and uncontrollable outbursts of screaming. After a local doctor,
William Griggs, diagnosed bewitchment, other young girls in the community began to exhibit similar symptoms, including Ann Putnam Jr., Mercy
Lewis, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mary Walcott and Mary Warren". "On March 1, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, an Indian slave from Barbados
(some sources mention her as being Caribbean), became the first Salem residents to be charged with the capital crime of witchcraft. Later that day,
Tituba confessed to the crime and subsequently aided the authorities in identifying more Salem witches. With encouragement from adults in the
community, the girls, who were soon joined by other 'afflicted' Salem residents, accused a widening circle of local residents of witchcraft, mostly

Child Beauty Pageants Child Abuse
Monica Landrum Landrum 1

English 1101
12 January 2014 Title
Although they seem undisputed and lighthearted, child beauty pageants are one of the most contentious and criticized of all children's activities. While
all other types of beauty contests are often viewed as distasteful, child beauty contests yield an even greater unfavorable response. Many individuals
go as far as critiquing the pageants as being child abuse. Some say the beauty pageants sexualize the young girls and place unnecessary expectations
of beauty at too early of an age. Contributors argue that the pageants help to build confidence and to teach the girls traits such as having poise and
self control. Child beauty pageants are contests constructed to reward adolescence for their looks and charisma. There are many different
components to every pageant. The children are often judged on how well they do during their interview, they're judge on their appearance, then on
their talents. The events are set up by age groups, such as 0 to 6, so the criticism is fair. Each age division winner usually wins a crown or a trophy....

The Greeks believed that the Earth was here before the gods; the gods did not create the universe, instead the universe made the gods. So the heaven

amongst the twelve Olympians, the other eleven included his two brothers: Poseidon, and Hades, their sister: Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo,

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Beauty is said to be in the eyes of the beholder, but what if the image of beauty is forced into the minds of many? The beauty of a person could be
expressed in many different ways, as far as looks and personality goes, but the novel The Bluest Eye begs to differ. It contradicts the principle,
because beauty is no longer just a person's opinion but beauty has been made into an unwritten rule, a standard made by society for society. The most
important rule is that in order to be beautiful, girls have to look just like a white doll, with blue eyes, light pink skin, and have blond hair. And if they're
not, they are not beautiful. Pecola, one of community's ugly children, lives life each day wanting to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

something that she believes is better (Weever 3/5). All over town, there are many little girls just like Pecola, buying into the products of Shirley

Although there are many different characters in this novel that are affected by the great advertisement of the beauty of a female in society, Pecola is

This is effective because it shocks us the audience and is hard hitting. Spielberg also creates this mood by tracking the girls running around in the

Analysis Of Sonny's Blues By James Baldwin
Racial injustice and stereotyping African–Americans were things that heavily influenced America's society in the mid–1900's. Place these problems
into an impoverished location full of African–Americans, and you get things like gangs and violence. Children who grow up in these ghettos, as they
are referred to in society, tend to either join the gangs and get caught up in the drugs and violence or get killed, sometime both. Sometime, people can
escape from the hard life that people are subjected to in the ghettos. Brent Staples, who grew up in the crime–ridden town of Chester, Pennsylvania,
was one of these people. Staples managed to be able to attend a university and leave his gang–filled home. His brother, Blake, was not so fortunate.

"When I finally did [write to Sonny], it was just after my little girl died, and he wrote me back a letter which made me feel like a bastard" (Baldwin
459). The two reconnect, and when Sonny gets out of jail, he comes and lives with the narrator until he gets back on his feet. Everything was
going fine, until the narrator finds Sonny smoking again. "When he scolds Sonny for smoking, Sonny laughs and asks the narrator if he smoked
when he was his age. He pleads with Sonny to finish school and promises to help him with his goals when he graduates" (Baldwin 186). The story
ends with the narrator watching Sonny perform at a local bar, where he sees all of Sonny's struggles get poured out into Sonny's music, and that is
when the switch flipped in his head, and he started to get a feel for why Sonny wanted to do what he did, and that he did drugs because he wasn't
able to release all of his emotions into his music. The neighborhood that the two grew up in, Harlem, was a big factor in how Sonny came to use
drugs when his music wasn't working out. The narrator describes Harlem "as the 'killing streets of our childhood'" (Baldwin 188). The narrator also
states that some are able to escape that impoverished environment while others [are] not" (Baldwin 185). The narrator and Sonny both grew up in the
same neighborhood, with the same

Sadly, it is violence against a small and young child. Right overcomes might as the child is rescued. We get the point and the understanding without in
being overly graphic. This movie was made in the sixties. I feel that through storytelling, direction, and camera angles the film got the action of
violence captured without being overly graphic. Today's movies seem to me more graphic. Movies are much more violent today. Over the last fifty
years or since this movie was made the level of gun violence has doubled and that gun–related violence in PG–13 movies exceeds that of the most
successful R–rated movies. Of course, gun violence is just one means of the portrayal of violence. The MPAA movie rating is but one aspect of this
all. Sadly, the ratings and classifications board has traditionally been soft on violence and harder on the portrayal of sex. This is something to take a
deeper look at by society as a whole. Upon further examination I go into the movie more deeply as regards to themes of

Dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs...The neighbor lady who had driven me to the hospital was surprised that I didn't run in the
opposite direction from any fire I saw. 'Why the hell would she?' Dad bellowed with a proud grin. 'She already fought the fire once and won'"
(Walls 15). Fire represented hope and not giving up. Despite getting burned as a young girl, Walls was not afraid to approach fire again. This
symbolized all the future challenges she would have to face, and no matter how much they would hurt her, she would rise back up. In addition, the
Glass Castle that her father had envisioned represented hope and the American Dream. She explained, "Once he finished the Prospector and we
struck it rich, he'd start work on our Glass Castle" (Walls 25). Even though the family was poor, they were chasing after that dream. The Glass Castle
was a representation of happiness, stability, and all their worries coming to an end. It was glass because it's fragile, and at any moment it could
collapse. Symbolism played an important role in conveying ideas and

The Bluest Eye
The novel The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison presents the certain type of beauty admired by the main character in this fictional story, which seems to
be the main content of the novel. The first thing that the people judge is the physical appearance, no matter from which part of the world anyone
comes from. The stereotype of defining a beauty in a certain way still prevails in our society. On the other hand, human beings being a social animal,
cannot remain secluded from the society. They shape themselves into the societal beliefs, values, trend, culture etc. of the society. Especially, the ones
who do not have the tendency or ability to contend are easily influenced. Likewise, the main character, the young black girl self–loathes up to the point

No matter how ugly, mean, pitiful one can be, the family is always meant to support, raise, guide, nurture and be a means of inspiration in anyone's
life. In the novel, this isn't the case for Pecola, which is why she gets mentally unstable as she couldn't bear the torture of ugliness of not having
blue eyes. Blue eyes are the one and only reason she could blame as per to her ability and thought process. In fact, she doesn't get the real ugliness
of how her father rapes her, the ugliness of how the mother choose the white girl over her, the ugliness of the fights between her parents is coming
from their unpleasant past. After all, she doesn't have that mentor in her life to explain what was happening. Everybody in her family is occupied
with their own mindset. She is very young to understand and analyze on her own. The narrator Claudia even gets to compare between her and
Pecola and starts accepting life and feel blessed for having a supportive family, which she doesn't feel until Pecola enters in her life. So, this shows
how young kids psychology is totally built upon the type of family environment she/he gets. There is a saying that young kids are like a raw clay

of environment they grow up with. By all means, Pecola's family is the

Analysis Of The Novel 'Gone Girl'
The novel 'Gone Girl' written by Gillian Flynn, is the story of a middle aged couple that shifts from their exciting lifestyle in New York to a small
town in North Carthage, Missouri in order to take care of Nick's sick mother. On the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick the main
character, realises that his wife Amy has disappeared, leaving behind nothing but clues that assist the idea that her husband had killed his wife.
Gone Girl is without a doubt one of the best 'love' stories I have ever read. Personally, I am not a fan of novels but this book had engaged me to the idea
that marriage can look so deceiving. This novel had put forward to me the conflicting accounts of the relationship between Nick and Amy Dunne in
ways that made me doubt the fantasy of true love. It portrayed to me a negative depiction of marriage and gender that such a contradictory book
delivered, which I found myself a little terrified at. Although I admired reading this book because of its clever plot and the interrogation of human
nature, this significant idea I got from the text had taught me that being in love isn't as easy as it looks. An example of this is through the character of
Amy Dunes as she presents what starts as a "fairy–tale" romance, by mentioning how she had found the most "great, gorgeous, funny cool–ass guy."
but in reality, the book revealed to me how their love life was falling apart and wasn't what they made it look to be towards the public. An example of
this idea

Southern Gothic Writing Style
Southern Gothic literature is a writing style that emphasizes the use of macabre and irony to expose social problems in the south. The Southern Gothic
writing style aims to expose the ignorance and moral blindness of the American South (Bjerre). Southern Gothic literature uses the writing style to
enhance the message of the author. In other words, the author uses Southern Gothic elements to place emphasis on their critical views of the south.
The authors use macabre and irony to emotionally influence the reader so that the message has the greatest impact. This essay will explore the use of

Movie Review : ' Silence ' Essay
A half dozen kids and their parents lined the walls of the small room, all squirming in their plastic chairs, excited that they were going to stars in
Pankyland the Movie. Except for me, that is. My knees knocked against each other like I had to go to the bathroom, but not because I bubbled inside.
This small room felt like they had the AC set on the polar bear setting. I yearned for a jacket. All the other kids held a copy of the movie script and
read it to themselves, most moving their lips and mumbling to themselves. Craig, my nine–year–old little brother, sat next to me in his squeaky chair
and read his script in silence. Mom sat on the other side of Craig, tapping text messages into her smartphone, probably bragging that she was to be
the mom of a movie star. Both Mom and Dad became weird the moment we learned the casting people picked Craig to be in the movie. They'd been
calling people, texting them, posting stuff on Facebook, and smiling at Craig a little more than usual. Even when I made black belt in karate, I trotted
up to Mom and Dad with my new belt in hand and found them talking about Craig and this stupid movie. The movie was about how Pankyland, the
Florida theme park, got its start. My dad loved Pankyland so much he forced an annual trip on us to suffer through the kiddie rides and nonstop,
repetitive, overly happy theme park music. Last summer, Craig, a neighbor, and I accidentally stumbled our way on stage. In front of hundreds, Craig
sang the Pankyland

Concision and Repetition in Babel's Collected Stories
Concision and Repetition in Babel's Collected Stories
With laconic power, Isaac Babel tells short stories that are at once cold and full of exultation. This effect arises as much from his prose style as from
the wrenching content of his narratives.
In this paper, I will explore several techniques that compress his prose to the lapidary and one that is more expansive and cuts against his impulse to
concision.
One of Babel's most striking tools for reducing his text to essentials is the simile (and more rarely the metaphor), a tactic that allows him to juxtapose
images that complicate the text in a short space. He also has a knack for rendering psychological states in terms so compressed that they seem
irreducible; for instance, at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "The Journey," with a few swift words, he paints a desolate landscape of dead horses in eschatological terms: "[Nevsky Prospect] was marked off
by the carcasses of horses as by so many milestones. With their legs in the air the horses supported a sky that had fallen low." Babel has lowered the
sky to the hooves of the inverted horses, forcing the reader to crouch lower still.
В§2 Psychological States
Babel frequently compresses his prose when rendering psychological states, lending them an urgency and power. Rather than linger on these moments
to which he could devote much more page weight, he picks his words carefully, forcing the reader to slow and mull the emotions and thought which
are given such emphasis by his lapidary style.
Sometimes Babel engages purely with the emotion. For instance, the narrator of "Guy de Maupassant" gives this account of his reaction to a book:
"My heart was constricted. I was brushed by a foreboding of truth." The constriction is not further elucidated, yet the moment is clearly a queer mix of
exaltation and fear that emerges not just from the book he has read, but also from his thwarted sexual advance to Raisa and an implicit quickening of
his writer's impulse.
More often, though, Babel tackles emotion indirectly, giving us a character's mental state through the diction and syntax of a description or an action.
In "The Sun of Italy," the narrator tells us: "The naked brilliance of the

Analysis Of ' The Bluest Eye '
In The Bluest Eye, Pecola the protagonist is taken under the Macteer family's wing much like "The African family is community–based and the
nurturing quality is not contained within the nuclear family, but is rather the responsibility of the entire community" (Ranström). In traditional Africa
each child has a place and is welcome in the community. The act of parenting another child was not odd because every adult that lived in each
community believed that any child is welcome in anyone's home. This, however, is not the case for Pecola. Although traditional African culture was
integrated into The Bluest Eye, it was not fully combined. Pecola lives in a very abusive household and always wonders to herself, what if she were
white, what if she had blue eyes? Would it change things, hopefully for the better?
Pecola obsesses over all things white because the town makes fun of her blackness. Pecola is alone due to her lack of beauty. In one scene Pecola is
laughed at called "e mo" and other names as other black children make fun of her blackness. Morrisons uses collective voice to show the racial
segregation at the time was not only white people, but it was the different shades of black. Something that someone cannot control. The boy bullying

Why Is Ma Rainey Important
Gertrude "Ma" Rainey is a pivotal figure in the history of American music. She was the first person to ever perform blues and the first internationally
known African American female blues singer. Her music acted as inspiration for many distinguished figures during the Harlem Renaissance, and
continues to influence contemporary music and art.
A single source of blues music cannot be traced, but Ma Rainey is rightfully credited with introducing it to the world. Hence the reason she was
dubbed as "The Mother of the Blues". During an interview in the 1930s, Ma told musicologist John Work, that she heard what would be called
blues, for the first time around 1902. She was in a small town in Missouri working a show at the time, and one morning a local girl came into the
tent singing about a man whom had left her. This new style of soulful music drew in Ma Rainey so much she later had the girl teach her the song.
Rainey performed the song as an encore in a show soon after, earning a special place in the show, and marking the start of her career (Jas Obrecht
Archive).
Gertrude Pridgett was born in 1986 to tent performers Thomas Pridgett Sr. and Ella–Allen Pridgett. Both were said to had traveled around the south
performing minstrel shows, which was the most popular form of live comedy entertainment from 1840 to the early nineteenth century (Biography.com).

My initial reaction was that such a book was the last thing I wanted to write. As someone who has suffered from depression since he was a teen, I
was afraid that writing about that illness might well sink me into a dark place from which it would be difficult to climb out. But only a few moments
after Cheryl asked, I found myself not only agreeing wholeheartedly to do it, but believing that this may well be the very book I was meant to write.
I'm not exactly sure when the first bout of depression came. The earliest episode that comes to mind was soon after my adoptive father died, when I
was thirteen–years old. Charlie Stork died instantaneously when he crashed his 1965 Rambler station wagon into the concrete pillar of a railroad
overpass. We were living in the small town of Alpine,Texas, located somewhere between El Paso and San Antonio. I'm an only child and my mother
had gone to Mexico to care for her gravely–ill father. Charlie and I were living in a dilapidated house in the poorest section of town. Our trailer had
been repossessed a couple of months earlier for failure to make the monthly payments. Photo courtesy of rellim (flickr.com) As hard at the grief of
losing my father was, it was still better than the debilitating depression that came a few months after his death. I was living at that time with Father
Martinez, a priest and old family friend. (My mother had to return to Mexico to care for my grandfather.)

Arnold Friend: A Short Story
There are many humbling sights of unfathomable magnificence, that have been described in some similar fashion, on the pale blue dot approximately
ninety–three million miles away from the sun. Here there are many creatures that gather in groups and walk on two legs. These mysteriously
coordinated, yet chaotic and lanky beings are humans. These gatherings are often called towns or cities for brevity's sake. In these civilizations it is
commonly known if life were a deck of cards, drawings straws, or a game of hungry hippos where the game is completely tilted one side, someone is
going to come up short. In essence, there is a fine line between thriving and suffering. So much so, in some cases, trying does not matter in the least.

There are many angles of some sort of disdain in grand and small ways with this tale. But none are more enigmatic than the plight of Bartleby. A
peculiar man, who is said to cut through paperwork like humans through a rainforest, is hired to be a helping hand at a law copyist firm on law street.
The fact that being a law copyist is a profession of monotonous connotation should speak partly to most characters in the tale. Bartleby was essentially
surrounded by curmudgeons with slight superiority complexes but for a while, he got along doing a fair amount of work and remaining quiet.
Time progresses and there begins a trend or quirk that escapes definition or reasoning. When asked if he would preform a task he would candidly
and calmy reply "I'd prefer not to."(Melville 27) This began with relatively trivial things. It seemed Bartleby was interested in the more pertinent
material at first. Contrary to that notion his preferences slowly begin to worsen into insubordination at the workplace, though gradually at first. The
narrator of the story, who is also the boss, begins to wonder where Bartleby had lived. What he had done in his spare time, things any curious soul
would wonder about such an increasingly peculiar gentleman. Then, Bartleby is solely discovered by him that he is living in their very place of work.

John F. Kennedy preaches that "conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." Conformity and fitting society's so–called "correct" mold
does exactly that: it limits individuality, and in the case that someone is unable to fit such a narrow mold, causes agony and self–loathing. But, in a
society where beauty is restricted to only fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes while anyone else is subjected to harassment, the effects can be even
more detrimental. In The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, the standards of beauty cause Pecola, one of the main characters, to become self–loathing and

Analysis Of Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter
In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops the dynamic characterization of Hester Prynne from a beautiful, innocent girl into a somber,
hardened women to showcase the evils and hypocrisy of Puritan New England's culture of shaming. Hawthorne employs rhetorical devices such as
metaphor and juxtaposition to further develop the characterization and his critique of Puritan society. When initially describing Hester, Hawthorne
emphasizes her incredible beauty, and juxtaposes this with the other ugly, judging Puritan women, adding to the hypocrisy of her being shamed for
sinning. Hawthorne emphasizes the verbal assault on Hester by employing metaphor and imagery in its description. After the community shuns and
shames Hester for years, Hawthorne uses metaphor again to show how Hester's body and character changes for the worst, emphasizes the malice and
evil of public shame.
Hawthorne juxtaposes the incredible grace and poise of Hester with the grotesque words and figures of the established Puritan women. When she is
heading up to the scaffold, Hester is described as, "lady–like, too, after the manner of the feminine gentility of those days, characterized by a certain
state and dignity" (Hawthorne 46). The idea of Hester being "lady–like" and having "gentility", which are very positive qualities to have for a woman,
especially in Puritan times, is used as a foil to the malicious treatment Hester receives. These positive traits also show the beauty and desirability of

Figurative Language In The Book Thief
In past reviews of The Book Thief, Pat Frade (2009), April Brannon (2006), and Jenni Adams (2010) focus on the questions that are typical in
reviewing a novel: who, what, where, when, and why did this happen? They talk about the facts and focus on the main events, but this is not an
acceptable interpretation of this novel. In approaching the novel this way, they lose the essence of what makes this book extraordinary. They lose the
lovely, haunting words that shape every page of the journey. It is understandable that they each took this approach. It is possible they just fell back on
the type of review that they are accustomed to in their work. However, this is not a typical novel. This novel is exceptionally unique in its narration
and the figurative language. The words make the story what it is. There is a tremendous amount of material on World War II and Nazi, Germany.
Marcus Zusak's novel, The Book Thief, is unlike any work that the reader knows on this subject matter. Because of this unusual perspective, the novel
must have a review that places the focus on the remarkable story telling qualities it possesses. The author, Zusak, chooses to communicate the events

Biography of Guy De Maupassant
Guy De Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850 at the ChГўteau de Miromesnil. He was born to his mother and father Laure Le Poittevin and
Gustave de Maupassant. At a young age his parents divorced, he and his brother lived with his mom for most of his life. Laure was highly involved
in his life, she is the first person to show him the love for classical literature. As he grew up that love grew stronger and stronger. After he graduated
college, he enlisted into the Franco– Prussian War. Although he served, and had other jobs afterwards he was not a very ambitious man. He would
rather spend his time and energy writing than doing his job. Many of his stories took place during the Franco–Prussian War. To me his stories were
twisted and depressing. His early life was not exactly the easiest of lives. "When Maupassant was 11, his parents separated, and he was brought up by
his mother in the picturesque coastal town of Г‰tretat" (Liukkonen). This affects the way he thinks, therefore the way he writes his stories. I also
believe that the war had a great effect on his writings. During the time of the war, many aspects of life weren't exactly joyful. I feel that the way the
world around him was depressing, which influenced him to write more depressing stories. "His subjects include war, the Norman peasantry, the
bureaucracy, life on the banks of the Seine, the emotional problems of the different classes, and, ominously, hallucination" (Britannica). It could have
been a way for

Good Vs. Evil In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne

  • 1. Good Vs. Evil In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne Themes of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American Writer, born in the 1800s. His family has a strong, strict puritan belief, which is why he writes about Puritanism in his stories, and why more than half of his novels are centered around it. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is a story that illustrates different pieces of Puritanism. The novel is based on it's main character, Hester Prynne, and the sin she committed before the novel even begins. Hawthorne's novel shows how one sin can escalate into how the person behind the sin is lost. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his characters to develop the themes of strength, good versus evil, and sin versus purity to create a strikingly historical tragedy. Nathaniel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hester Prynne is considered to be evil because of the sin she committed. The people of the town consider themselves as the "good" citizens of the puritan society. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his writing skills and tone to bring this theme to life. Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale's act of adultery is obviously seen as sinful in God's eyes and the puritan society, yet they are still beneficial to their community. They suffer the consequences of the sin, Hester publicly and Dimmesdale in secret. They continue to using their citizenship in positive ways. Hawthorne describes Hester as a humble woman that is caring and helpful to anyone in their society, and Dimmesdale's profession is a high–level pastor in Boston. The theme of good is represented in how everyone treats one another. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays evil in other characters throughout the novel. One of the main antagonists in the novel is Roger Chillingworth. He is considered to be the most evil person in the story because he devoted his entire life to torturing his wife's lover for the transgression of adultery they committed. • 2. Summary Of Soakanon: The Goddess Of The Sky It is said by combining all of the good in the world, it will still create some bad. And with that in mind, the world produced the purest women ever created. And with her came the ugliest, meanest woman. At first they fought over silly things such as who could survive the longest, and who was the prettiest (which the first born won every time1). However, as they grew older, they began to fight over property and leadership. The second born lost everything, and began to cheat. But Kwanita (2) saw everything, and noticed right away. So she gave the first born godly powers, and declared her "Soakanon: The Goddess of The Sky". One night, Soyala asked about Soakanon to Piapot, saying they looked and acted alike. Piapot, angry, struck Soyala with blue lightning (8). Because Soyala was a god, it did not kill him, though instead sent him to Kwanita to be revived. Kwanita became disappointed and bored. She promised that whoever killed the other sister, would receive their greatest want: Soakanon wanted Soyala back, and Piapot wanted the power of both sisters. So to avoid her sister, Soakanon began to live in the god's dimension and sealed it off to Piapot. She watched the people live, and did her job each day, to create the rain. Piapot tried to get closer to her sister. She stole a single strand of light, and using her powers, turned it into darkness. She named him Aeternis Tenebris. Soakanon felt this, as this strand of light was her faithful servant (9). Soakanon begged Kwanita for her servant back, so she promised that if she made a recipe with the elements in it, she would be allowed to have AT (10) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wes Nelson was a sophomore in high school and had always dreamed about playing for their state number one five years in a row golf team. Wes would always see the varsity golf players in the hall of the school and gawk at them as if they were greek gods themselves. They just seemed so perfect to him. First there was Jeffrey Wimson, the varsity number six. Jeffrey was a 5' 10'' junior with chiseled features from playing on the football team, and a perfect shiny black beard. Every player on the Varsity roster shoots consistently in a range from 67 to 73. Wes was about a two handicap which means he shoots a range from about 74 to 79. Ever since Wes was a young boy he had always had aspirations to play for this prestigious team. He had practiced day and night for years trying to accomplish this one goal. It always came down to the same thing that was holding him back, putting. Child Beauty Pageants Child Abuse Monica Landrum Landrum 1 Mrs. Wilkie English 1101 12 January 2014 Title Although they seem undisputed and lighthearted, child beauty pageants are one of the most contentious and criticized of all children's activities. While all other types of beauty contests are often viewed as distasteful, child beauty contests yield an even greater unfavorable response. Many individuals go as far as critiquing the pageants as being child abuse. Some say the beauty pageants sexualize the young girls and place unnecessary expectations of beauty at too early of an age. Contributors argue that the pageants help to build confidence and to teach the girls traits such as having poise and self control. Child beauty pageants are contests constructed to reward adolescence for their looks and charisma. There are many different components to every pageant. The children are often judged on how well they do during their interview, they're judge on their appearance, then on their talents. The beauty of a person could be expressed in many different ways, as far as looks and personality goes, but the novel The Bluest Eye begs to differ. It contradicts the principle, because beauty is no longer just a person's opinion but beauty has been made into an unwritten rule, a standard made by society for society. The most important rule is that in order to be beautiful, girls have to look just like a white doll, with blue eyes, light pink skin, and have blond hair. And if they're not, they are not beautiful. Gone Girl is without a doubt one of the best 'love' stories I have ever read. Personally, I am not a fan of novels but this book had engaged me to the idea that marriage can look so deceiving. This novel had put forward to me the conflicting accounts of the relationship between Nick and Amy Dunne in ways that made me doubt the fantasy of true love. It portrayed to me a negative depiction of marriage and gender that such a contradictory book delivered, which I found myself a little terrified at. Although I admired reading this book because of its clever plot and the interrogation of human nature, this significant idea I got from the text had taught me that being in love isn't as easy as it looks. An example of this is through the character of Amy Dunes as she presents what starts as a "fairy–tale" romance, by mentioning how she had found the most "great, gorgeous, funny cool–ass guy." but in reality, the book revealed to me how their love life was falling apart and wasn't what they made it look to be towards the public. • 22. Concision and Repetition in Babel's Collected Stories Concision and Repetition in Babel's Collected Stories With laconic power, Isaac Babel tells short stories that are at once cold and full of exultation. This effect arises as much from his prose style as from the wrenching content of his narratives. In this paper, I will explore several techniques that compress his prose to the lapidary and one that is more expansive and cuts against his impulse to concision. One of Babel's most striking tools for reducing his text to essentials is the simile (and more rarely the metaphor), a tactic that allows him to juxtapose images that complicate the text in a short space. He also has a knack for rendering psychological states in terms so compressed that they seem irreducible; for instance, at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "The Journey," with a few swift words, he paints a desolate landscape of dead horses in eschatological terms: "[Nevsky Prospect] was marked off by the carcasses of horses as by so many milestones. With their legs in the air the horses supported a sky that had fallen low." Babel has lowered the sky to the hooves of the inverted horses, forcing the reader to crouch lower still. В§2 Psychological States Babel frequently compresses his prose when rendering psychological states, lending them an urgency and power. Rather than linger on these moments to which he could devote much more page weight, he picks his words carefully, forcing the reader to slow and mull the emotions and thought which are given such emphasis by his lapidary style. Sometimes Babel engages purely with the emotion. For instance, the narrator of "Guy de Maupassant" gives this account of his reaction to a book: "My heart was constricted. I was brushed by a foreboding of truth." The constriction is not further elucidated, yet the moment is clearly a queer mix of exaltation and fear that emerges not just from the book he has read, but also from his thwarted sexual advance to Raisa and an implicit quickening of his writer's impulse. More often, though, Babel tackles emotion indirectly, giving us a character's mental state through the diction and syntax of a description or an action. • 23. Analysis Of ' The Bluest Eye ' In The Bluest Eye, Pecola the protagonist is taken under the Macteer family's wing much like "The African family is community–based and the nurturing quality is not contained within the nuclear family, but is rather the responsibility of the entire community" (RanstrГ¶m). In traditional Africa each child has a place and is welcome in the community. The act of parenting another child was not odd because every adult that lived in each community believed that any child is welcome in anyone's home. This, however, is not the case for Pecola. Although traditional African culture was integrated into The Bluest Eye, it was not fully combined. Pecola lives in a very abusive household and always wonders to herself, what if she were white, what if she had blue eyes? Would it change things, hopefully for the better? Pecola obsesses over all things white because the town makes fun of her blackness. Pecola is alone due to her lack of beauty. In one scene Pecola is laughed at called "e mo" and other names as other black children make fun of her blackness. • 24. Why Is Ma Rainey Important Gertrude "Ma" Rainey is a pivotal figure in the history of American music. She was the first person to ever perform blues and the first internationally known African American female blues singer. Her music acted as inspiration for many distinguished figures during the Harlem Renaissance, and continues to influence contemporary music and art. A single source of blues music cannot be traced, but Ma Rainey is rightfully credited with introducing it to the world. Hence the reason she was dubbed as "The Mother of the Blues". During an interview in the 1930s, Ma told musicologist John Work, that she heard what would be called blues, for the first time around 1902. She was in a small town in Missouri working a show at the time, and one morning a local girl came into the tent singing about a man whom had left her. This new style of soulful music drew in Ma Rainey so much she later had the girl teach her the song. Rainey performed the song as an encore in a show soon after, earning a special place in the show, and marking the start of her career (Jas Obrecht Archive). Gertrude Pridgett was born in 1986 to tent performers Thomas Pridgett Sr. and Ella–Allen Pridgett. Both were said to had traveled around the south performing minstrel shows, which was the most popular form of live comedy entertainment from 1840 to the early nineteenth century (Biography.com). As someone who has suffered from depression since he was a teen, I was afraid that writing about that illness might well sink me into a dark place from which it would be difficult to climb out. But only a few moments after Cheryl asked, I found myself not only agreeing wholeheartedly to do it, but believing that this may well be the very book I was meant to write. I'm not exactly sure when the first bout of depression came. The earliest episode that comes to mind was soon after my adoptive father died, when I was thirteen–years old. Charlie Stork died instantaneously when he crashed his 1965 Rambler station wagon into the concrete pillar of a railroad overpass. We were living in the small town of Alpine,Texas, located somewhere between El Paso and San Antonio. I'm an only child and my mother had gone to Mexico to care for her gravely–ill father. Arnold Friend: A Short Story There are many humbling sights of unfathomable magnificence, that have been described in some similar fashion, on the pale blue dot approximately ninety–three million miles away from the sun. Here there are many creatures that gather in groups and walk on two legs. These mysteriously coordinated, yet chaotic and lanky beings are humans. These gatherings are often called towns or cities for brevity's sake. In these civilizations it is commonly known if life were a deck of cards, drawings straws, or a game of hungry hippos where the game is completely tilted one side, someone is going to come up short. There are many angles of some sort of disdain in grand and small ways with this tale. But none are more enigmatic than the plight of Bartleby. A peculiar man, who is said to cut through paperwork like humans through a rainforest, is hired to be a helping hand at a law copyist firm on law street. The fact that being a law copyist is a profession of monotonous connotation should speak partly to most characters in the tale. Bartleby was essentially surrounded by curmudgeons with slight superiority complexes but for a while, he got along doing a fair amount of work and remaining quiet. Time progresses and there begins a trend or quirk that escapes definition or reasoning. When asked if he would preform a task he would candidly and calmy reply "I'd prefer not to."(Melville 27) This began with relatively trivial things. It seemed Bartleby was interested in the more pertinent material at first. Contrary to that notion his preferences slowly begin to worsen into insubordination at the workplace, though gradually at first. The narrator of the story, who is also the boss, begins to wonder where Bartleby had lived. But, in a society where beauty is restricted to only fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes while anyone else is subjected to harassment, the effects can be even more detrimental. • 30. Analysis Of Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops the dynamic characterization of Hester Prynne from a beautiful, innocent girl into a somber, hardened women to showcase the evils and hypocrisy of Puritan New England's culture of shaming. Hawthorne employs rhetorical devices such as metaphor and juxtaposition to further develop the characterization and his critique of Puritan society. When initially describing Hester, Hawthorne emphasizes her incredible beauty, and juxtaposes this with the other ugly, judging Puritan women, adding to the hypocrisy of her being shamed for sinning. Hawthorne emphasizes the verbal assault on Hester by employing metaphor and imagery in its description. After the community shuns and shames Hester for years, Hawthorne uses metaphor again to show how Hester's body and character changes for the worst, emphasizes the malice and evil of public shame. Hawthorne juxtaposes the incredible grace and poise of Hester with the grotesque words and figures of the established Puritan women. When she is heading up to the scaffold, Hester is described as, "lady–like, too, after the manner of the feminine gentility of those days, characterized by a certain state and dignity" (Hawthorne 46). The idea of Hester being "lady–like" and having "gentility", which are very positive qualities to have for a woman, especially in Puritan times, is used as a foil to the malicious treatment Hester receives. • 32. Figurative Language In The Book Thief In past reviews of The Book Thief, Pat Frade (2009), April Brannon (2006), and Jenni Adams (2010) focus on the questions that are typical in reviewing a novel: who, what, where, when, and why did this happen? They talk about the facts and focus on the main events, but this is not an acceptable interpretation of this novel. In approaching the novel this way, they lose the essence of what makes this book extraordinary. They lose the lovely, haunting words that shape every page of the journey. It is understandable that they each took this approach. It is possible they just fell back on the type of review that they are accustomed to in their work. However, this is not a typical novel. This novel is exceptionally unique in its narration and the figurative language. The words make the story what it is. There is a tremendous amount of material on World War II and Nazi, Germany. Marcus Zusak's novel, The Book Thief, is unlike any work that the reader knows on this subject matter. Because of this unusual perspective, the novel must have a review that places the focus on the remarkable story telling qualities it possesses.
