Hp Has An Edge On Human Resource
Since 1939 set up by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, HP has provided worldwide customers personal
computers, computer peripherals, and date and Internet services. The company became the No.1 PC
manufacturer in 2007 and held the first rank for several years. Currently, HP is still one of the leading
companies in the computer manufacturing industry. In 2014, HP reports a net revenue of 111.5 billion,
decreased by 1% from 112.3 billion of 2013. HP 's four main businesses, which are personal systems, printing,
enterprise group, and enterprise service, account for 96.4% of the total net revenue (See Appendix I). SWOT
Strength Compared with other competitors, HP has an edge on human resource (Enderle, 2013). Wright,
McMahan and McWilliams (1994) stated that human resources always were a potential source of sustained
competitive advantage, if they were valuable, rare, inimitable, and non–substitutable. Technically, the CHRO
of HP uses human resource matric analysis and HR science in management. In practice, human resource is
viewed as a strategic resource, not just a kind of equipment that can be sold and bought. Being respected and
well treated, employees in HP hold a relatively higher loyalty. According to Enderle (2013), HP is enjoying
some of the lowest employee turnover number in the industry. Low turnover rate on workers of production
lines means that HP can save money on recruiting and training and that skilled workers guarantee a high level
of productivity. Low turnover

Hewlett-Packard and the Personal Computer Industry
HP: Stay or Leave the PC Industry
The computer industry is a tough and competitive business. Companies are constantly competing to have the
newest and greatest advancements in technology that will make their product the most appealing to
consumers. It is a multi billion–dollar industry, but in mid August Hewlett Packard, the worlds largest PC
distributor made the announcement that it planned to exit the Personal computer industry to focus on other
aspects of their company. This shocked not only consumers, but also other competitors in the industry. Just a
few months after Leo Apotheker, the CEO who made this decision, was fired from his position and replaced
by Meg Whitman. When Whitman was hired she made it clear that "Apotheker's ... Show more content on

By having this large amount of income it can help sustain another division that may encounter higher
production costs or lower sales. Another way it can uphold other parts of the company is by helping be an
entry for other products. The printing and imaging division is a large part of the company and it seems that
there is strong correlation between printing and PC's. It makes it easier on consumers to go to place and pick
up a Hewlett Packard computer and printer. By offering these necessary items together HP, like other
companies have done, can use this as a market strategy and offer price discounts for both which can lead to
higher sales in both. "Computers also help promote HP's brand, and are a crucial part of the company's "one–
stop shop" services that it offers to corporate customers, HP said." The personal computer business also seems
like driver for HP's software sales. Technology is constantly growing and changing. People are not going to
buy a new product every time some new advancement comes out so updating software easy way to keep up to
date for consumers. The Personal computer divisions seem to be strongly associated with the other aspects of
the business and it seems to help support these divisions profits as well. If HP had gotten rid of its PC
business it could have a serious effect on the rest of the company.

Dell's Business Down Into Four Groups
Introduction Dell, Inc. is a multinational computer technology company that was founded in 1984. It is the
third largest personal computer manufacturer in the world. The company became a public company in 1988,
but then in 2013, became a private company once again (Dell). Dell breaks its business down into four
groups: its core group is End–User Computing (desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets.) More than 60% of the
company's revenues come from PCs (Guglielmo). The newest groups, Enterprise Solutions (servers,
networking, and storage,) and Software and Services are the fastest growing and most profitable (Dell)
(Guglielmo). In its earlier years, Dell pioneered the use of direct sales on its website and the "build–to–order"
process of manufacturing individual personal computers. It also used the just–in–time manufacturing
approach to keep inventories of raw materials low. However, in the last several years, this course has been less
effective as computers have become low–cost commodities and competition has heated up with high–volume
Asian manufacturers, such as Acer and Lenovo. Michael Dell, the founder of Dell, Inc., recently took the
company private, because he would like to concentrate on the Enterprise Solutions, Software and Services
divisions. He felt that stockholders did not want to change the core business from the manufacturing of
computers. This doesn't mean he plans to stop manufacturing computers; in fact, he wants to sell computers at
a competitive price to get

Analysis Of Hewlett Packard And Dell Packard Enterprise
Breaking up is a hard thing to do; whether it is with a girlfriend or another company, the process is hurt a
headache waiting to happen. However, due to hard times and demanding environments, business are choosing
to "de–merge" to make a play on major change. Hewlett–Packard is a business that is quite familiar with these
hard times. Not to say that they've been struggling with selling their product, but keeping up with the times is
something that H–P has not done the best of. At one time, Hewlett–Packard was leading the world in PC
manufacturing for five straight years (Gartner, 2014). Why, after so much success in year's past, did HP decide
that is was time for major change? Well, they figured that, by splitting HP into two separate companies, they
would be giving each respective company its best chance of thriving. Now, instead of being Hewlett–Packard,
the two companies are: HP Inc. and Hewlett–Packard Enterprise. Development and distributions of hardware
for computers and printers is now the forte of HP Inc., while HP Enterprise will sell commercial computer
systems, software, and tech services. CEO of HP, Meg Whitman stated, "Today, I'm more convinced than ever
that this separation will create two compelling companies well positioned to win in the marketplace and to
drive value for our stockholders, (Vanian, 2015). I believe that Whitman is right by saying this because by
separating HP into two companies, this allows financial and human resources to be allocated to

Hewlett–Packard's majority of earnings are coming from its printing supplies division. This makes the

HP also lost shares in the PC and server markets in 2002 and 2003 while its top competitors Dell and IBM

investment in creating a strong research software product for consumer so that IBM can support many highest

also limits the possibility of exploring the brand opportunity in different product category. With only 1
product line for home consumer (Compaq Presario), Compaq was perceived by customers as lack of
performance and flexibility compare to Dell. This was due to the extensive product line of Dell which also

Business Strategy For Hewlett Packard Company
1. Introduction
Among global manufacturers, offshoring, obtaining products and services from overseas, has been one of the
most widely used strategies to take advantage of the arbitrage of labour cost. However, in recently years,
reshoring seem to be the new trend in business as a recent survey conducted by the Boston Consulting Group
found that 21 per cent of a sample of 200 executives of large manufacturers were either already relocating
production to the US, or planning to do so within the next two years. A further 33 per cent said they were
considering it, or would consider it in the near future. [1] Many well–known companies such as Google,
General Electric, Caterpillar and Ford Motor Company are moving part of their production or adding new
plants back in their country of origin.[3]
In my point of view, there is a potential opportunity for Hewlett–Packard Company to reshore part of their
value chain activities in its personal system division back to the US, as detailed proposal and analysis will be
discussed as follow.

seamless manner, that it is almost transparent to the user. The user takes a photo on the iPhone, it is

The international IT and electronics industries have been characterized with intensive competition. Electronics
and IT companies are constantly reviewing their achievements as well as the competitors' in order to come up
with better business strategies in an effort to best all other existing industry rivals. With the merger and
acquisition strategy between HP and Compaq, members of the IT and electronics industry all over the world

With the conglomerate efforts between the new HP–Compaq corporation, it is expected the substitute
products and services that competes with the provisions and offers of HP–Compaq will be lessen due to better
production and manufacturing processes and technological infrastructures that cannot be afforded by small
rival companies.
New Entrants
New entrant in the electronics and IT industries are confronted with relatively more difficult entry to the
international market due primarily to highly aggressive competition between and among large corporations. It
is common knowledge that business operations and facilities that characterize both the international IT and
Electronics industries are very expensive and sophisticated. Such factors serve as strong barriers of entry to
the industries where HP–Compaq belongs.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
The merger between HP and Compaq will increase the companies' competitiveness when it comes to the
possible new product lines and services that they will offer as a single company to the clients and customers.

HP Case Study Essay
1. Analyze how people, information, and information technology help the company remain competitive in
their industry.
New products and category innovation define and redefine the computer hardware and software industry and
its landscape. Lately, we've seen even greater volatility than usual, and it has begun to affect the makeup of
hardware and software companies themselves (Casey & Hagen, 2015). The structure some technological
companies were built upon is becoming a thing of the past as more strict customers force companies to take
upon mergers, acquisitions and/or split ups to achieve the desired financial performance.
Hewlett–Packard (HP), as many companies, has been forced to modify their strategy in order to remain
competitive in the corporate business as well as the printer and personal computer segment of the hardware
and services industry. On its efforts to keep up with continuous market fluctuations, HP separated into two
companies with quite distinct markets, with quite distinct customers, being able to move faster to take
advantage of the changing customer needs and accelerating the company's products and innovation road map
(Clark, 2014).
Corporate transitions, whether to a new industry or business model or to a new innovation process, often
reveal the fissures in in organization's culture, and create a need for culture change and HP has ample
experience with this (House, 2015). In November 2014, HP announced that the original company was
splitting in two. HP

Benefits Of A Proactive Strategic Procurement Operation
INTRODUCTION
Every organisation requires goods and services from external suppliers or providers as no company is an
Island. These goods are to be acquired at the right time, right source, right quality of materials, right quantity
and also these goods are to be of the right price in order to give the organisation an advantage over its
competitors( competitive advantage) allowing it to generate greater sales and retain more customers than its
competition. We will be looking at HEWLETT–PACKARD. Hewlett–Packard emphasis has gone beyond just
reacting to the needs of users as and when they arise, to a forward looking proactive approach. This reflects

Going to low–cost countries to source has plenty of advantages, but it has to be done right. ( The Boston
consulting Group 2008)
Hewlett–Packard is the case study of this work, procurement being a broad topic, we will concentrate on three
main areas for the purpose of these work. Brief understanding of them;
GLOBAL SOURCING:
Global sourcing can be simply defined as coordinating and integrating of procurement requirement across
worldwide business units. Mostly practised by large organisations because they are the ones that have the
need, leverages and facilities around the globe to enable them apply the process to gain competitiveness from
global sourcing. They are usually in a contract with other large corporations who have the ability to supply the
products to their sites located globally. Many organisations are meeting the need for lower cost by moving to
foreign countries where there are less regulations that interferes with the manufacturing process, where they
can find cheaper labour and thereby lower the cost of basic plant, personnel cost and also operational cost.
Sourcing and outsourcing which have developed over time are the two basic methods of foreign
manufacturing and it helps in making the best choice for global supply chains. Some basic things need to be
considered before outsourcing, sometimes companies outsource when it does not make any sense. Eg if a

Hp Compaq Essay
Question 1 Using a SWOT analysis, identify the key strategic fits between the two companies. What are the
most important expected synergies? Strength Weakness  Ability to serve customers at lower cost  Compaq
was a significant player in enterprise systems and HP in IT services business  Wider spectrum of products
for its clients through the merger  Strong brand recognition, something that takes time to build  Highly
complimentary R&D  Overlapping management  Overlapping product lines  Diluted interests in
imaging and printing which were traditionally HP's strengths Opportunity Threat  The next IBM? (HP was

The expected cost synergies (as announced by HP) are approximately $2.5 billion . This amounts to
approximately $0.83 per share in the merged firm. The market value of Compaq at the time was
approximately $21 billion pre–merger announcement, meaning that a reasonable price for Compaq should be
$23.5 billion. So the final exchange ratio price of $25 billion includes a premium of 6.3% or $1.5 billion.
Considering that the PC market had matured and was faced with increasing competition with price
undercutting by competitors, the price offered by HP seems rather optimistic. (Refer to HP–Compaq key note
slides)  One of the assumptions is the P/E of 15x to 25x. Is this justified? 0  Is the discount rate of 15%
justified? (Look at the back and use beta to calculate). If you calculate it, it seems reasonable. (Beta for HP is
1.5 and 15% discount rate is viable)  Revenue loss of $4.1 billion. Where could this come from? ANS:
Overlapping businesses and cannibalisation of products and hence natural revenue loss. Question 3 (exhibit 5
– 7 ) Conduct a simple valuation of Compaq. Does your valuation differ significantly from the HP offer price
and why? Do you think the offer price is appropriate? Brief background of Compaq: Founded in 1982 its
primary strengths are in innovation and its low cost structure of its products which compete with Dell. Its
primary business divisions are commercial and consumer PCs, enterprise computing and global services. Its

Case Study : Hp 's Software Sales
One weakness for the company would be HP's software sales. According to Peter Grant from EHOW, "HP
software sales and HP's Enterprise Business line of software products are one of the weaker revenue streams
among HP's other business units". "These software products compete with others produced by Microsoft,
VMWare, and Salesforce in the CRM, ERP, and virtualization software markets" (Grant, Peter).
Another weakness for the company is their lack of presence in the tablet market. HP continues to produce
high quality desktop and laptop computers, but haven't fully jumped into the tablet market. Desktop and
laptop computers are slowly being replaced by tablets and smart phones. HP needs to take this weakness and
change it to an opportunity in the future in order to keep the company up to date with consumer demand. After
assessing the company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the SWOT analysis, it is
important to create both an internal and external factor evaluation analysis and summary. This shows how
each external and internal factor is weighted and rated, then giving us a weighted score of each (see Appendix,
Figure 5). After all external and internal factors are evaluated and a weighted score is found, it is then plotted
on a chart based on each weighted score (see Appendix, Figure 6). This helps the company determine if they
should grow and maintain their company, build and harvest the company, or hold or digest the company.

printers are one of the highly used items by consumers. However, PC sales have been declining due to
consumers using their mobile phones or tablets. It will continue to decline unless HP develops a sustainable
solution to produce successful mobile phones or tablets. 2.4 Bargaining power of customers Customers have
moderate bargaining power mainly because there are many buyers and not one particular buyer is dominant
enough to directly influence HP's profit margin. Another reason why is because, customers knows that if they
demand more customization and features for the product, HP or its competitors will be able to meet their
demand in order to increase their profit. 2.5 Supplier HP's suppliers have a high level of bargaining power
mainly because of the type of industry it is in. HP is in the electronics industry. A PC or a printer is made up

All of these two competitors are focused on their industries. Some of the opportunities HP figured out are by
pursuing long–term visions that will create new markets. This includes the new HP Fiorina Way where she
breaks the management into two sectors, front end and back end. The new structure boosts collaboration,
giving sales and marketing executives a direct pipeline to engineers so products are developed from the
ground up to solve customer problems. Another one is to come up with new e–services and then making the
gear to deliver them. Couple other new innovations HP is thinking taking their company to the Web where
they identified three solutions – the digital imaging effort to make photos, drawings, and videos as easy to
create, store and send as e–mail. A commercial printing thrust aims to capture business that now goes to offset
presses. And a wireless services effort might, say, turn a wristwatch into a full function. A net device that
tracks the wearer's heart rate and transmits that info to a hospital. The threats HP posses are from its rival
members such as Dell, Sun and IBM. The printing and imaging business is the company's crown jewel. As HP
becomes more heavily reliant on commoditizing markets like PCs and servers the company will continue to
face margin pressure. HP's biggest threats on a system level looking at companies with a broad breadth of

GLOBAL SOURCING/ OUT SOURCING:
?Global Sourcing is the integration and coordination of procurement requirement across the world wide

?Global sourcing is practiced by big corporations as they have the need and leverage to gain competitiveness
from global sourcing and also the facilities around the globe to enable them to apply the process. They are

Hp Has An Edge On Human Resource

  • 1. Hp Has An Edge On Human Resource Since 1939 set up by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, HP has provided worldwide customers personal computers, computer peripherals, and date and Internet services. The company became the No.1 PC manufacturer in 2007 and held the first rank for several years. Currently, HP is still one of the leading companies in the computer manufacturing industry. In 2014, HP reports a net revenue of 111.5 billion, decreased by 1% from 112.3 billion of 2013. HP 's four main businesses, which are personal systems, printing, enterprise group, and enterprise service, account for 96.4% of the total net revenue (See Appendix I). SWOT Strength Compared with other competitors, HP has an edge on human resource (Enderle, 2013). Wright, McMahan and McWilliams (1994) stated that human resources always were a potential source of sustained competitive advantage, if they were valuable, rare, inimitable, and non–substitutable. Technically, the CHRO of HP uses human resource matric analysis and HR science in management. In practice, human resource is viewed as a strategic resource, not just a kind of equipment that can be sold and bought. Being respected and well treated, employees in HP hold a relatively higher loyalty. According to Enderle (2013), HP is enjoying some of the lowest employee turnover number in the industry. Low turnover rate on workers of production lines means that HP can save money on recruiting and training and that skilled workers guarantee a high level of productivity. Low turnover ... It makes it easier on consumers to go to place and pick up a Hewlett Packard computer and printer. Dell breaks its business down into four groups: its core group is End–User Computing (desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets.) More than 60% of the company's revenues come from PCs (Guglielmo). The newest groups, Enterprise Solutions (servers, networking, and storage,) and Software and Services are the fastest growing and most profitable (Dell) (Guglielmo). In its earlier years, Dell pioneered the use of direct sales on its website and the "build–to–order" process of manufacturing individual personal computers. It also used the just–in–time manufacturing approach to keep inventories of raw materials low. However, in the last several years, this course has been less effective as computers have become low–cost commodities and competition has heated up with high–volume Asian manufacturers, such as Acer and Lenovo. Michael Dell, the founder of Dell, Inc., recently took the company private, because he would like to concentrate on the Enterprise Solutions, Software and Services divisions. He felt that stockholders did not want to change the core business from the manufacturing of computers. This doesn't mean he plans to stop manufacturing computers; in fact, he wants to sell computers at a competitive price to get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At one time, Hewlett–Packard was leading the world in PC manufacturing for five straight years (Gartner, 2014). Why, after so much success in year's past, did HP decide that is was time for major change? Well, they figured that, by splitting HP into two separate companies, they would be giving each respective company its best chance of thriving. Now, instead of being Hewlett–Packard, the two companies are: HP Inc. and Hewlett–Packard Enterprise. Development and distributions of hardware for computers and printers is now the forte of HP Inc., while HP Enterprise will sell commercial computer systems, software, and tech services. CEO of HP, Meg Whitman stated, "Today, I'm more convinced than ever that this separation will create two compelling companies well positioned to win in the marketplace and to drive value for our stockholders, (Vanian, 2015). • 22. HP Case Study Essay 1. Analyze how people, information, and information technology help the company remain competitive in their industry. New products and category innovation define and redefine the computer hardware and software industry and its landscape. Lately, we've seen even greater volatility than usual, and it has begun to affect the makeup of hardware and software companies themselves (Casey & Hagen, 2015). The structure some technological companies were built upon is becoming a thing of the past as more strict customers force companies to take upon mergers, acquisitions and/or split ups to achieve the desired financial performance. Hewlett–Packard (HP), as many companies, has been forced to modify their strategy in order to remain competitive in the corporate business as well as the printer and personal computer segment of the hardware and services industry. On its efforts to keep up with continuous market fluctuations, HP separated into two companies with quite distinct markets, with quite distinct customers, being able to move faster to take advantage of the changing customer needs and accelerating the company's products and innovation road map (Clark, 2014). Corporate transitions, whether to a new industry or business model or to a new innovation process, often reveal the fissures in in organization's culture, and create a need for culture change and HP has ample experience with this (House, 2015). So the final exchange ratio price of $25 billion includes a premium of 6.3% or $1.5 billion. Considering that the PC market had matured and was faced with increasing competition with price undercutting by competitors, the price offered by HP seems rather optimistic. • 25. Case Study : Hp 's Software Sales One weakness for the company would be HP's software sales. According to Peter Grant from EHOW, "HP software sales and HP's Enterprise Business line of software products are one of the weaker revenue streams among HP's other business units". "These software products compete with others produced by Microsoft, VMWare, and Salesforce in the CRM, ERP, and virtualization software markets" (Grant, Peter). Another weakness for the company is their lack of presence in the tablet market. HP continues to produce high quality desktop and laptop computers, but haven't fully jumped into the tablet market. Desktop and laptop computers are slowly being replaced by tablets and smart phones. HP needs to take this weakness and change it to an opportunity in the future in order to keep the company up to date with consumer demand. After assessing the company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the SWOT analysis, it is important to create both an internal and external factor evaluation analysis and summary. This shows how each external and internal factor is weighted and rated, then giving us a weighted score of each (see Appendix, Figure 5). After all external and internal factors are evaluated and a weighted score is found, it is then plotted on a chart based on each weighted score (see Appendix, Figure 6).
