Algebra I
Class Description:
Romans 12:6-7 says “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s
gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is
teaching, let him teach;.” God has created us all with different gifts. Some parents feel
more comfortable having their children learn about topics covered in high school Algebra I
in a classroom setting. This class is being offered to assist those families. We will be
completing a large majority of the Saxon Algebra I textbook and will be studying signed
numbers, exponents, solving equations, two equations with unknowns, graphing equations,
scientific notation, ratio, percent, variation, unit conversions, perimeter, area, volume,
surface area, and English to metric conversion. Students will be expected to complete
homework throughout the week at home. During class, students will have a chance to ask
questions regarding homework and work through examples over new material. Occasional
pop quizzes will be given during class to encourage active listening☺. Students will
complete weekly tests at home, and will return them to class the following week for grading.
Grades will be issued at the end of each semester and will be based on attendance, active
participation, quizzes, and tests.
Outside assistance:
Students may contact me at home if they are having difficulty with a problem. If I am not at home, please leave a message and I will
return your phone call by the end of the day. I do not want students struggling with a homework problem and becoming frustrated. My
goal is to make these topics understandable in a non-stressful manner for the student, and am willing to meet via phone, Skype, or in
person as convenient to both parties in order to promote such understanding. I enjoy math and also hope to help students gain confidence
as they learn how to solve increasingly difficult mathematical problems.
