Course Objective: To build confident writers, with the competency to
demonstrate college level academic writing skills.
Course Description: This course will focus on the academic writing skills
required in college. Emphasis will be on refining skills within the individual
stages of the writing process. Students will learn valuable research skills as we
walk through the traditional research paper, the argumentative research paper,
and three citation styles (Chicago, MLA & APA). Current event topics will act as
springboards for timed essay writing practice. Students should expect to
improve their grammar, writing style, thinking and organization skills, and
national and international current event knowledge. Each student will be
constructing a writing portfolio containing college level samples of their best
work.
Required Materials: Students will need their own copy of the reference book,
Kate L. Turabian. Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers. Chicago: U Chicago P,
2010. (You may purchase anywhere~ $15)
Please bring 3-ring binder, college-lined paper, pencils and erasers.
Tuition: Course tuition is $250 per year. Half ($125) is due the week before
classes begin in September. The other half is due at the beginning of the
second semester in January.
Tutor Information: Graduated from WMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Education and minors in Creative Arts, Math & Science. Extensive experience
teaching all ages & abilities, including ESL and English Language Arts. Married
for 16 years and homeschooling son & daughter since 2007. Currently serving
as Math Connection High School Leader, HCYA Parent Advisor & Kalamazoo
Cougars Girls Varsity Soccer Coach.
