One Semester Class: .5 credits
Public speaking ranks as a top fear for most people—sometimes even greater
than the fear of death! However, all of us will inevitably be faced with a social or
vocational public speaking “opportunity.” How do we overcome fear and build con-
fidence? Learn and practice. This class will provide ample opportunity for stu-
dents to engage in real-life communication activities with their peers, learn how to
structure a speech, and demonstrate their learning in a safe environment that will
foster growth and mutual encouragement. Some people are blessed with public
speaking abilities, but everyone can learn basic ways to organize, outline, and de-
liver various speeches. By being thoroughly informed and prepared, students can
become confident speakers.
Special attention will be given to basic communication skills, both verbal and
nonverbal, in the teaching portion of this class. Students will be graded according
to an appropriate speech rubric (see sample attached) as well as their audience
participation and an occasional quiz. If possible, students will prepare at least one
speech supported by a PowerPoint presentation.
