What Is Syria Essay
In the political and social badlands that those residing in this world have come to regard as the
middle east, there exists a country by the name of Syria. Like many other countries of the region,
this country has large areas of arid land not fit for habitation. However, unlike some of the other
countries of this region, Syria boasts large hospitable coastal, forested, and mountainous areas that
have diverse seasons ranging from extreme heat to snow in the winter months. Most of the habitable
areas of Syria reside along the western coastline of the region or along the eastern plateau, which
boasts large areas of mountainous and often densely forested areas. This diversity has given Syria
some social wiggle room that its neighboring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But alas, this feat of stability, was to be short lived. By early 2011, the country balanced on the
razor's edge as it was stressed by severe socioeconomic issues as well as by the turmoil of the
changing political climate raging through its neighboring countries. For it was at this time, that a
wave of violent and nonviolent protests swept the entire region of the middle east in what has come
to be known as the Arab Spring . This season of protests led to toppling of regimes, political figures,
and even the caused the destabilization of entire governments. Some of these included: Protests that
forced Hosni Mubarak (president of Egypt at the time) to resign his office , Mass Demonstrations
that forced the government of Yemen to crack down on the protesters leaving anywhere from 200 to
2,000 people dead, and the exile of Ben Ali (the autocratic ruler of Tunisia) as deadly
demonstrations ravaged the country . This did not bode well for Syria, as the Assad regime was
having trouble dealing with their population at the time. In his article, "For America, An Arab
Winter" Aaron Miller noted that, "support in Syria was increasingly tenuous as a result of Assad's
repression and whose Islamist trope seemed out of step with the non–ideological, youthful, secular
character of the opposition in the Arab street." Make no mistake, the regime that the Assad's had
established brought much needed stability to the state of Syria, but it did so at a

Should Photojournalism or Documentary Photography Be...
"A photograph is not merely a substitute for a glance. It is a sharpened vision. It is the revelation of
new and important facts." ("Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History."). Sid Grossman, a Photo League
photographer expressed this sentiment, summarizing the role photography had on America in the
1940's and 50's. During this era, photojournalism climaxed, causing photographers to join the
bandwagon or react against it. The question of whether photography can be art was settled a long
time ago. Most major museums now have photography departments, and the photographs procure
pretty hefty prices. The question of whether photojournalism or documentary photography can be art
is now the question at hand. Art collectors are constantly looking ... Show more content on

He felt that FSA photographers used stylistic elements such as sharp focus, even lighting, and
frontal composition to mark their images as factual and that they should be read as unbiased. He felt
that the work should be described as documentary style.
American photographers of the late 1950's and 60's reinvented the documentary tradition.
Photographers like Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and lee Friedlander looked at the world through
the "astonish–me" viewpoint. Diane Nemerove, or better known as Diane Arbus, was an American
Documentary Photographer known for her compelling, yet often disturbing portraits of people from
the edges of society. An example is the 1962 image of The Boy with the Hand Grenade in Central
Park. As a native New Yorker, Diane Arbus photographed the people of the city, but not just the
everyday. Arbus sought out those at the edge of society. She depicts the daily life, but with an
emphasis on the abnormality of the commonplace. When looking at the image of the boy in 1962,
the child seems no different from other children; his facial expression communicating a frustration
beyond the specific image. You see a boy with the strap of his shorts awkwardly hanging from his
shoulder, with his arms tense and his hands clenched in frustration; a toy replica hand grenade in his

William Somerset Maugham : The Formula Of Life
William Somerset Maugham: The Formula to Life
"My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the
world at large with surprise and horror"(Quotes). Playwright and novelist William Somerset
Maugham was no stranger when it came to admitting he had a promiscuous private life. After
running away from his home in England, Maugham began publishing books and plays he had
written that soon made him thousands of dollars. With this new lifestyle, Maugham could afford the
elegant parties, couture clothing, and intricate homes in the French Riviera with facilitation. He had
an exciting and somewhat risqué way of life that was unheard of during the 1920's. Maugham was
known to interact with both genders sexually, and even the most carnal of his companions described
him as the most sexually enthusiastic man they had ever known. He had the lifestyle of many
celebrities who are exposed in today's tabloids. However, just like many celebrities of today,
Maugham was secretly a very unhappy man. This depression and search for life's true meaning are
seen vividly throughout his works. In Maugham's broken, unhappy world, he brings to his readers a
sense of repeated conformity and reflection of himself with his writing. William Somerset
Maugham's novels The Painted Veil, Magician, and The Razor's Edge employ a recurring formula
for weak females, intelligent males, and the sad state of their marriages
Maugham incorporates one recurring statement

Giorno Giovanna Character Analysis
[Monster Profile: Giorno Giovanna]
Life is very expected, there is no telling what is gonna happen or where it will take you. For Giorno,
he wasn't expecting to find out his father was alive...or that he had two. He certainly wasn't
expecting a visit from one of them telling him that his life was in endanger all because some rival
mob somehow rebooted a bunch of ancient Aztec death robots that were now after his life. Least of
all he didn't expect to suddenly be thrown out a window and growing a pair of wings. At least, in
that case, it was someone help.

A cambion is the offspring of an "incubus or succubus" and a human. As luck would have it with his
incubus blood and his partial vampire blood, Giorno became a holy cambion. With his unique

Personal Narrative: My Writing As A Means
As my mother and I were driving on a horrendously windy day, I howled something that was
incomprehensible. She stopped the vehicle in bewilderment and outrage, and immediately
questioned me for the reasoning of this action. All I could do was stand and point in awe of what I
was witnessing. She immediately discovered the bird too, just sitting in a long–dead cornfield. The
ruckus startled the Bald Eagle, and began to fly away. My mother attempted to draw out her phone
to take a picture of the beautiful bird, only to lose control of the device, dropping it on the vehicle's
floor. The marvelous bird flew directly above our vehicle, merely feet away, leaving me to this day
striving to understand and appreciate all this country has provided me. Since then I have regarded
and understood more about our world, furthermore, how much I have been given. I would not be
competent to perform the simplest of duties if I had grown up in many other countries. Now I realize
that not a single soul that I know would be capable to be in the place that we all seem to dread, our
school. None of us would be able to organize the fun activities we take part in, including soccer
tournaments and the occasional movie. There are many major events we would ... Show more

decisions, I can legitimately appreciate that I am not endangered at all moments with the spectacular
judgement of our military. Truly, I can't even remember a time I felt at a razor's edge at all, and I

Gooseberry Season by Simon Armitage
Gooseberry Season by Simon Armitage This essay is about the poem which is called "Gooseberry
Season" and it's by Simon Armitage. I will be looking at the character of father in the poem and look
at the different techniques that are used to describe the behaviour of the father. At the start of the
poem the character of the father seems to be kind, generous and caring as he lets a stranger stays in
the house when the stranger comes and asks for water. This shows his generosity and niceness. Later
in the poem he becomes angry and has jealous. At the end of the poem he is a murderer. The title

What Is Insanity In Hamlet
The distinction between sanity and insanity is narrower than the razor's edge, sharper than a hound's
tooth, more agile than a mule deer. It is more elusive than the merest phantom. Perhaps it does not
even exist; perhaps it is a phantom.–Philip K. Dick, Valis. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet the
protagonist Hamlet is able to relate to this quote as he is often dancing on the thin line between
sanity and insanity. Insanity often acts as a trojan horse for Hamlet, being an excuse for some rash
actions committed by him.The book starts after the death of King Hamlet which is believed to have
been caused by a bite from a venomous snake. However, young Hamlet learns that it was no animal.

After deciding that he can't just murder Claudius without significant proof of him killing his father
Hamlet decides that he'll throw a play with events similar to the death of his father and attempt to
get a reaction out of Claudius. When the play has been planned and he's ready to catch Claudius red
handed Hamlet begins to descend into temporary insanity. During the play Hamlet becomes
progressively more erratic and throws jabs at the audience occasionally. When Ophelia comments
on the briefness of the prologue Hamlet responds with "As woman's love"(III.i.137–138). But after

Analysis of 'The Escape'
Analysis of the story "The Escape" by W.S. Maugham
William Somerset Maugham is one of the best known English writers of the 20th century. He was
not only a novelist, but also a one of the most successful dramatist and short–story writers.
Maugham wants the readers to draw their own conclusion about the characters and events described
in his novels. His reputation as a novelist is based on the following prominent books: "Of Human
Bondage"; "The Moon and Sixpence"; and "The Razor's Edge".
Though Maugham doesn't denounce the contemporary social order, he is critical of the morals and
the narrow–mindedness. Realistic portrayal of life, keen character observation, and interesting plots

The Perils And Privileges Of Auto Ethnography
Reading Response Week 4: The Perils and Privileges of Auto–Ethnography
Although not mentioned in this week's Marshall/Rossman chapter, feminism and autoethnography
has popped up before in prior readings, so there is some familiarity with both concepts. Now comes
what their synthesis looks like in practice. In this light the readings forced me to re–examine
positionality, especially in the framework of auto–ethnography. At first I thought this was too
obvious but in light of the titular question Stacey asks – "Can There Be a Feminist Ethnography?" –
the feminist researcher's proximity to the data and interpretation positionality becomes the fraught
answer to consider, Her awkwardness (if that's the right word) in balancing the tightrope as an
ethical researcher between product and personal integrity feels unexpected yet palpable. The
dilemma she faces "forced my recognition that conflicts of interest and emotion between the
ethnographer as authentic, related person (i.e. participant), and as exploiting researcher (i.e.
observer)" (23). I feel as if she as a feminist researcher was startled by the dilemma she faced and
wonder if her surprise was compounded by not anticipating it . How much an epiphany is it to learn
that participants come with their own agendas? Therefore participants come with their own inherent
powers which threaten to usurp the researcher and her own objectives. In the wake of this surprise
she asks the provocative introspective question

Essay on A Brief History of Hard Rock
The music industry has many different genres, to suit a multitude of listeners; but, the most popular
is rock. Rock has numerous genres within itself, including; heavy metal, hard rock, arena rock, and
many more. The most popular genre would be either heavy metal or hard rock. They are both very
similar in "taste" with the only differences being what the music is about and the pitch of the music.
Heavy metal is typically about the "darker" things in life and it will have an overall deeper pitch to
it. While, hard rock is considered "good–time music" and contains a multitude of different pitches.
Hard rock really began in the 1970's; but, is rooted from the music of the mid–1960's; such as,

These bands along with the others that had risen from this time period are still around today and
have millions of fans. The 1980's had brought with them a new era of hard rock, the glam metal era.
During this period many of the hard rock bands of before had broken up and only a few remained.
The remaining bands changed their style of play even more, toward the heavy metal scene. This in
turn allowed the creation of the punk metal genre and the development of the heavy metal scene.
Within this new era several bands had changed their appearance along with their music. Kiss had
removed their, famous, makeup and moved toward the pop/punk genre. Near the end of this era all
of the surviving artists had either stayed with hard rock or jumped on the new, popular, heavy metal
bandwagon. Within the 2000's many of the band had come to end and were forced to separate
because most people had fallen for the heavy metal genre and were no longer interested in just heard
rock. To this day a few bands such as AC/DC and Foreigner are still holding sold out concerts and
completely refuse to ever cease, even though the public would never let it happen.
On New Year's Eve 1974, one of the greatest rock bands to have ever existed took the stage for the

The Society Of Fahrenheit 451
The society of Fahrenheit 451 constantly presents characters with instances in which they must react
to social injustice. The most prominent examples of this come to the reader through the eyes of Guy
Montag as he slowly evolves from a blinded Fireman to a man who discovers the truth about his
society and dedicates himself to saving books in hopes of creating a new society. Even in the
beginning, deep down Guy knows what the firemen do is wrong, "Montag grinned the fierce grin of
all men singed and driven back by flame...Later, going to sleep, ...the fiery smile still gripped by his
face...[after talking to Clarisse a few minutes later] "Are you happy?" she said. "Am I what?" he
cried. But she was gone–running in the moonlight. Her front door shut gently. "Happy! Of all the
nonsense." He stopped laughing."... Of course I 'm happy. What does she think? I 'm not?"(1, 4 (pdf

bliss" because in a short walk and a few words Clarisse has awakened Guy, pointing him towards
the truth." The woman replied quietly, "I want to stay here" "Five. Six." "You can stop counting,"
she said. She opened the fingers of one hand slightly and in the palm of the hand was a single
slender object. An ordinary kitchen match...The woman 's hand twitched on the single matchstick.

Antigone Creon Tragic Hero Quotes
Creon as a Tragic Heroine What do you consider a tragic hero? A tragic hero is a person of noble
birth with heroic or potentially heroic qualities. This person is fated by the Gods or by some
supernatural force to doom and destruction or at least to great suffering. But the hero struggles
mightly against this fate and this cosmic conflict wins our admiration. Creon, one of the main
characters, shows his five tragic flaws and they are hubris, peripetia, anagnoisis, hamartia, and the
fate must be greater than deserved.
One of Creon's tragic flaws is hubris. Creon's tragic flaw is his hubris which is exhibited in his

The downfall of Thebes was caused by Creon's stubbornness and abuse of power. Creon thought by
being King he can do whatever he pleases and have everything going his way. Creon's role a King
made him believe that he has the right to brake the laws of God and makeup his own for his people
without even asking the people how the like the new arrangements. He caused the corruption of
Thebes by trying to measure his powers with the powers of the Gods which Tiresias foreshadowed
that it won't have a good ending. In my opinion the major cause of the downfall of Thebes is the
poor ability of Creon to tell apart what's right and what's wrong. This is evident when he says, " The
last example of Creon as a tragic hero is his fate is greater than deserved. This Is evident when
Creon and Haemon are speaking and they say, Creon–"you threaten me?" ("Sophocles" 190) And

Razor's Edge
A handful of conflicted characters, a substantial amount of drama, and a dash of enlightenment –
this is what makes up "The Razor's Edge" by W. Somerset Maugham. After initial character
introduction, this book quickly reveals how unwise it is to put complete faith in first impressions. At
first glance, Laurence Darrell and Isabel Bradley appear to be the epitome of an early 1900s couple:
young, naive, and extremely in love. Looking closer, Isabel seems to be the one in control of their
relationship. Larry is dependent upon Isabel for companionship, having grown up without a true

factors. Firstly the film is set in the 2019, giving people a fascinating insight into the future.
However the unusual thing about the future is the dystopian outlook, which is not the habitual
preconception we most have. The special effects and fight scenes did much to increase the

most is the presence of Harrison Ford, who still is to this day a huge star. And stars like him make
people want to go and watch a film.
Blade runner addresses some of the eternal questions that humans have asked for centuries, for
example:
"What does it mean to be human?" "What is reality?" "What is the difference between real
memories and artificial memories?" "How does our environment affect us?" "What are the moral
issues we face in the creation of artificial people?"
Moreover, Scott's better films reach toward higher truths. Blade Runner, thus, cannot be understood
without comprehending the deeply felt moral, philosophical, ecological and sociological concerns
that are interwoven throughout the story. Take, for instance, the film's title–a "Blade Runner" is one

What Is Harrod Model Of Economic Growth
Introduction on Harrod Model of Economic Growth
Harrod's model of growth is similar to that of Domar, but it differs from the latter in details.
Therefore we will explain below the essential features of Harrod's growth theory separately. In his
essay "Towards a Dynamic Economics", Harrod put forward a theory which can be consid¬ered as
truly dynamic. Explanation of secular trends is his main theme. He seeks to explain the secular
causes of unemployment and inflation and the factors which determine the equilibrium and the
actual rate of capital accumulation.
The classical economists considered economic development as a race between technological
progress and capital accumulation on the one hand, and growing population and diminishing returns
from land on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While arriving at the behavior of income as a response to entrepreneurial decisions regarding
investment, Harrod makes two assumptions: Saving in any period of time is a constant proportions
of the income received during that period, and The investment is proportional to the rate of increase
of income.
The second assumption is in fact the acceleration principle which states that the increase in output or
income that occurs induces an increase in the stock of capital. Harrod begins his analysis of growth
by combining together acceleration principle and the theory of investment multiplier. As in Domar's
model, Harrod explains that growth rate depends on the rate of capital formation (or investment) and
capital–output ratio which he defines as "the value of the capital goods required for the production
of a unit increment of output.
Assumptions of Harrod model: Constant returns to scale holds. The level of ex–ante aggregate
saving is a constant proportion of aggregate income. Capital output and labor output are assumed to
be constant. The overall effect of technical progress is

Razor Vs Electric Razor
The truth is grooming matters. For most men, body grooming is essential to achieving a suave and
professional look. There are two main types of razors: the electric razor and the blade. Both of these
razors have their advantages and disadvantages. The electric razor results in fewer cuts. However,
the disadvantages of the electric razor greatly outnumbers that of the electric razor. Electric razors
are initially expensive and required maintenance (which involves sending the razor to the factory for
repairs from time to time). Additionally, without electrical outlets or electricity electric razors are
utterly pointless. Benefits of Using a Straight Razor A straight razor will provide a better shave. A

Antigone Family
The play Antigone composed by Sophocles relays the dispute between Antigone and Creon, two
tragic heroes, and their opposing philosophies on honor. Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and
Polynices, fell on separate sides of the battlefield. Fighting for Creon's kingdom, Eteocles is to
receive a proper, honorable burial. While Polynices, for the rebels, " is to be left unburied, left to be
eaten by dogs and vultures" (131). Although both authority and family are present, the reader can
interpret that to Sophocles, family holds more importance over authority. The actions presented by
Ismene convey the importance of family to Sophocles. For example, Antigone argues the proper
burial for her fallen brother, Polynices, to her sister Ismene who, "cannot act [a]gainst the State"
(128). While Ismene is initially siding with authority, she eventually converts to family. After
Antigone is caught in the act of burying her brother and is sentenced to death, Ismene, "can [not]
bear to live, if [Antigone] must die " (141). If Sophocles believed authority held more importance,
Ismene would not feel guilty for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Upon continuing his act of repention, Creon goes to free Antigone, but he finds her "hanging by the
neck [with] the rope [which] was woven linen of her dress" (159). Haemon, with Antigone in his
arms, was distraught at the site of his dead fiance. Blaming his father, Haemon lunged at Creon, but
instead stabbed himself in the side. Through this action the reader can interpret that Haemon saw no
reason to live without his beloved Antigone. Upon hearing the dreadful news, Eurydice, Haemon's
mother, demonstrated another act of love by, " [driving] the sharp sword home into her heart" (161).
Eurydice knew she could not live knowing her son sacrificed his life for the love and commitment to
his family. The audience can infer that Sophocles uses death to show the importance of family to

Clean Edge Analysis Essay
Position Statement:
Paramount Health and Beauty wants to launch a new razor into the market currently referred to as
"Clean Edge." The project team recommends that the company should position the product as a
distinct mainstream product, dubbing it "Clean Edge by Paramount" in order to produce growth in
sales from new product innovation. The importance of placing the product in a mainstream position
is to successfully launch an innovative product creating more market share for Paramount and for
Clean Edge to become the most sought out razor in the industry. Failing to take this route and
deciding to position the product in a niche would only give the new product a limited amount of
consumers, preventing Clean Edge from reaching its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clean Edge by Paramount gives customers a clear perception of the advantages of the product
without being concerned about other product categories.
Critique of Rejected Options
There are several reasons why the project team should reject the first option in positioning Clean
Edge in a niche. The first reason concerns the pricing strategy. Placing the product in a niche
position would make the razor more expensive in the retail sense. Catering to the more involved
groomers places the product at a suggested retail price at $12.99. Placing the product at a higher
price in the niche position could only lead Clean Edge Razor to a limited market. Rosenberg
suggested placing the product in the niche position for a year or two; however, this could lead to
prevention in attracting a wider customer base for the product during that time frame.
Another reason Paramount should not place in the niche position is their significantly low marketing
budget compared to their competitors. In just media advertising alone, Radiance spent $16 million
on Naiv. For Clean Edge, the cost for advertising for the niche position would only be $7 million.
Because Radiance is spending more than twice as much on their advertising compared to what
Paramount would spend in the niche position, Radiance would gain an advantage in covering more
ground to promote its product.
As far as product naming is concerned, "Paramount

Examples Of Materialism In The Razor's Edge
Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well–being defined by positive or pleasant emotions. In
Somerset Maugham's novel The Razor's Edge, some characters think that wealth, social status, and
material possessions will bring them happiness. Larry Darrell is the only character that doesn't care
for any of these things, and he is the only character that Maugham says is happy. Through these
differing ideas of happiness, Maugham creates the argument that happiness is not achieved through
materialism. Materialism is a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as
more important than spiritual values. I argue that Maugham believes happiness is achieved through
spiritual beliefs and not materialism.

When Maugham's character goes to a party with Elliott he "did not know whether to admire his
indomitable spirit or to lament that at his age, stricken with mortal illness, he should still retain his
passion for society." (224) Maugham doesn't want us to admire Elliott for this, he wants us to feel
sorry for him. At the end of his life Elliott had nothing left; he was abandoned by all his friends and
was no longer being invited to parties. What makes his death pathetic is the fact that he never gives
up on his social life. Despite his mortal illness and his lack of friends he still thinks that responding
to his party invitation is worthy of his time. His entire goal in life was pointless in the end. It's
almost like Maugham is slapping him in the face for choosing the wrong path. By presenting
Elliott's life as the wrong path Maugham tells us that social status isn't the way to happiness either.
Since Larry is the opposite of Elliot it is easy to see how Maugham favors Larry's

Who Is A Sympathetic Character In The Razor's Edge
In The Razor's Edge by Somerset Maugham Isabel was a sympathetic character because she loved
Larry, but married Gray. She understood that her love for Larry would not be enough for his
happiness, so she let him go. She married Gray not for her happiness, but to appease her family. Her
ability to relinquish her emotions, future, and her family, made her selfless. Elizabeth was engaged
to Larry for the first two parts of The Razor's Edge, but her love for him continued throughout the
novel. Larry was lost though and felt the need to explore an avenue that he was not accustomed to.
By being engaged he felt anchored or forced to stay in Chicago because that is what society was
dictating. "Isabel had been brought up a certain way and she accepted the principles that had been
instilled into her" (49). This meant that with the small amount of money that Larry had they could
not raise a family together and travel the world like Larry wanted in an "acceptable" way. She
contemplates going with Larry even though he doesn't have the funds, but she cannot fathom the
idea of living below her means if she doesn't have to. Larry though has a sort of wondering heart, he

narrator and Isabel, Isabel says "Mother and Uncle Elliot approve of what I have done. Do you

did not want to marry Gray, but instead wanted to marry Larry. What she says that her "Mother and

embodiment of social justice and with his approval she can climb the social ladder. I think that

Leadership Styles And Their Preferred Language Of...
Introduction A leader in Human Resources (HR) Management must be a professional, dedicated to
self–awareness and stewardship of the HR profession. Management leadership is an ongoing
responsibility and an art that develops over time. According to the late George Terry (1981), the
primary task of a manger is to enable a working environment that will induce and maintain an
enthusiastic desire to accomplish work among employees (p. 90). Leadership progresses with
experience, observation, and interaction with employees. The critical understanding of leadership is
being able to motivate employees to invest their personal interest in the organization and provide a
purpose for the duties they perform. To do this, there are multiple facets of effective leadership to
discuss; keeping in mind that individuality is key. Employees are people and with that comes
psychological, physiological, and motivational differences. An effective leader must understand
these differences and adapt to each employee on an individual basis. Employees will differ in
leadership styles and their preferred language of appreciation. Understanding the different styles of
each employee will enable effective leadership and encourage an atmosphere of cooperation,
cohesiveness, and dedication.
Leadership Styles Research compounded by Daniel Goleman concluded that there are six styles of
leadership. Each style being a reflection of the leader's emotional intelligence. Goleman (2009)

Female Genital Mutilation Paper
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a surgical procedure performed on the genitals of girls and
women in many parts of the world. The term FGM covers a range of procedures, which are also
referred to as female circumcision and introcision. FGM is found extensively in Africa and is also
indigenous to other parts of the world. The age and time at which FGM is practiced differs from
community to community, and can be carried out from as early as a few days after birth, to
immediately after the birth of a woman's first child. One of the notable trends in global FGM today
is the progressive lowering of the age at which girls undergo the practice. Among communities that

film after analyzing the reasons for the procedure and the lack of the knowledge when it comes the

Meaning, I tried thinking about what if I was there and it was a traditional, religious requirement for

Roman Polanski's Repulsion Essays
Roman Polanski's Repulsion
Analysis of an aspect of visual form in the film 'Repulsion' In the 1964/65 film 'Repulsion' by
Roman Polanski, the story is about the conflict between reality and fantasy or sanity and insanity
inside the main character's mind – Carol played by Catherine Deneuve. Therefore the narrative
technique of symbolism is used to display visually to the film's audience what happens to Carol's
mind. In this particular instance, the degeneration of Carol's state of mind is symbolised.
Carol's state of mind degenerates, or breaks down because of her repulsion of masculinity in a
sexual context. Through Carol's eyes, we see masculinity as being aggressive, obsessive,
crude/sexually suggestive, rapacious and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously the camera then pans to see this – but it can hold onto the shot for longer than Carol looks
at it, giving the audience a chance to understand why Carol might look at it. As her state of mind
being like it is, what it symbolises only needs a casual look or glance at it from Carol. As a symbol
itself, the empty 'hut' represents a pathway or tunnel to a 'dark' kind of life – one filled with despair,
depression, anxiety, anger, fear, hate, and/or any other types of negative human qualities. Near the
end of the film, this 'dark' image is shown again, just after Carol kills the landlord with the cut–
throat razor. Her face is kept in shadow – an oval of near black – and is framed by her hair, which
enhances this image further because it is blond.
As I have implied before, Carol's understanding of life around her is distorted. She frequently sees
cracks appearing in walls – which can be read as cracks in her mind. In one instance, Carol sees a
crack in the pavement on her way to work. She becomes engrossed by it, and sits down on a bench
by it to simply look at it. The shot of the crack taken over her right shoulder shows that the crack
runs between her feet. It then splits into two cracks, making the entire crack look like a 'Y'. This
suggests that it is used as a symbol to show two paths in life to take: the first being the good,
realistic or sane path; the other being the bad, fantastic or insane path. Her boyfriend then finds her

Savagery In Lord Of The Flies
"Civilization is the lamb's skin in which barbarism masquerades."– Thomas Bailey Aldrich has
shown how each human being has barbarism hidden under the mask of civilization. When there is
absolute freedom and no outside check, how barbaric ways influence, dominate and overrule human
psyche and how quickly human beings discard civilized ways under the tempting influence of
barbarism. In William Golding's, Lord of the Flies, he displays the struggle between civilization and
savagery through three characters: Jack, Ralph, and Piggy. Jack has become a savage once all
authority has been removed from his life. He demands power and authority over the boys in the

He also had a deep respect for authority, which illustrates he is more civilized than anyone else on

our meat'" (Golding 107). As exhibited in this quote Piggy is trying to calm Ralph down and telling
him to leave so he does not get into a brawl with Jack. Furthermore Piggy also shows that he is in
need of order and a civilized way of life. As portrayed in chapter 8 Piggy is overjoyed that Jack has
departed from the group. "Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack's departure, so
full of pride in his contribution to the good of society... (Golding 142). In this quote Piggy is
overjoyed with the fact that Jack has now left the group and that order can now be restored to their
group. In the Lord of the Flies Piggy is the most intellectual and the most civilized of all the boys.

Transcendentalism In James Baldwin's Another Country
Early in the first chapter of Another Country, James Baldwin presents a kaleidoscopic canvas of
urban humanity situated within the precincts of a quasi–pastoral setting, presumably Washington
Square Park:
The passage cited here is not only as testimony to Baldwin's literary eloquence –– the entire novel is
a nearly a symphony in language. The passage also serves as witness to the scope of the author's
observant compassion. In his re–creation of the nature–image in fiction, Baldwin transcends misty
transcendentalism. He rises above the class–laden and ephemeral nature–writing conventions that
rhapsodize about ponds, butterflies, copses and flowerbeds. Rather, the flora and fauna of Baldwin's
writing is the wilderness of monkeys (the ladies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interesting, the business–type is not unlike "Mr. Nash" in Another Country –– the odious
"impresario" in the nightclub scene where Cass Silenski admits to a subterfuge (in a novel of
interweaving subterfuges) in which she has "been using Ida [Rufus Scott's sister] and Vivaldo as
smoke screens to cover her affair with Eric [so] why should not Ida use her, then, to cover from
Vivaldo her assignation with Ellis (Baldwin 362)." This is the same scene we later learn that Ida, as
the price of her ambitions, is humiliated by her fellow jazz musicians: "You black white man's
whore, don't you never let me catch you on Seventh Avenue, you hear? I'll tear your little black
pussy up."
In any case, the "nigger–in–the–woodpile" image is introduced here as a conceptual nexus between
Another Country and Leo Marx's Pastoralism in America. In the essay, Marx writes that the
"machine–in–the–landscape" image "became an omnipresent feature of popular culture (Marx, 37)."
He contends that the concept has explanatory value in comprehending such disparate cultural
phenomena as Walden Pond and the Berkeley student protests of the late

recognized the existence of a greater power and searched to find it. He enjoyed learning from
anyone willing to teach and read a great many books about things many didn't believe in. Larry is

That is an important statement. The other services, the interagencies are dependent on the Army to
provide support to their actions. So as we look to the Army of 2020, as a part of Joint Force 2020,
how do we want to shape it? Today, we are an Army that is globally engaged in 150 countries on six
of seven continents. We have over 95,000 Soldiers deployed in support of operations; another
96,000 Soldiers forward stationed. Our strategic posture is a testament to our flexibility and
adaptability as well as our unmatched credibility as the best trained, best equipped, and best led land
force in the world. Moving forward, our Army's primary purpose is steadfast and resolute: to fight
and win our Nation's wars. But we all know that the Army must be able to do much more than that.
Today, we require an Army that is adaptive and innovative, flexible and agile, integrated and
synchronized, lethal and discriminate. Even more critical in today's complex and uncertain
environment, the Army is the decisive arm of the Joint Force in a broad range of missions.
Historically the Army has been focused on a specific set of needs, but these needs and the means in
which they are resourced have changed. So we must fundamentally change how we do business. As
we keep adding rocks to our Soldiers' rucksacks, all leaders must remain cognizant over time.
Everyone's load can get too heavy and cause permanent wear and tear. So it is a good idea to

What Does Templeton From The Razor's Edge Mean
Elliott Templeton, from The Razor's Edge, comes across in every way that his social status is the
most important aspect of his life. Even the narrator notes that he may have "given the reader an
impression that Elliott Templeton was a despicable character." (6) To quite the contrary, throughout
the novel Elliott demonstrates to the reader there are far more important things in his life. As a
wealthier individual, he does not hesitate to spoil his friends and family or financially assist them in
times of hardship. He also understands that sometimes money isn't the only way to show kindness.
Elliott shows the full extent of his kindness and generosity in the way he treats his sister Louisa,
looks after his niece Isabel, and in his friendship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the start of the story, Elliott and Louisa "hadn't seen one another since 1912," (17) and although
Elliott was yearning to return to Paris, he "promised Louisa to spend six weeks with her." (17)
Putting his own wants aside to make his sister happy demonstrates how Louisa's happiness means
more to Elliott than his own. Louisa visits Elliott in Paris later, to which Elliott informs her that he
had made an appointment for her with Chanel to purchase some new outfits. When Louise objected,
telling Elliott she didn't "want to spend a lot of money," (46) he insisted, telling her he was
"proposing to pay for everything." (46) His generosity when it comes to his sister is endless, even if
it is just by means of some new clothes for her to enjoy her visit to Paris in. As well, after receiving
a tip about re–investing his money before the crash, Elliott's first thought was of his sister. After
selling all his stocks and buying gold, he "cabled to Louisa to tell her to do the same." (103) He
might have informed other wealthy friends first, but Elliott's kindness to inform his sister could have
saved her financial disaster if she had taken it. No matter the distance between them, there is no
level of kindness and generosity that Elliott

Informative Speech On Pitbulls
We have all heard about people saying that Pit Bulls are dangerous or that they are uncontrollable,
which is not completely true. There are three things I'm going to tell you about Pit Bulls and some
history. First you are going to learn about the history of the dogs. Second, you're going to be told
about some facts about the breed, some good and some bad. Third, you're going to be told how they
compare to other kinds of dogs.
The history of Pit Bulls is a violent one that most people don't know about. The term pit bull
referred to the now outlawed sport of bull–baiting, where they had a bull attach to the ground by
rope in a pit. They would send dogs into the pit to subdue the bull by biting its nose and the bulls
usually died since the dogs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first fact is something everyone should know, Pit Bulls are not an actual breed of dog! Yes there
is a breed called the American Pitbull Terrier, but that is what most people call a 'Pitbull', Pit Bull
refers to the look of a dog. There is a rumour about the Pit Bull's bite, which stated that they had a
bite strength of 1,600 pounds per square inch and was the strongest bite of any dog, and the is not
true the Pit Bulls true bite strength is 235 pound per square inch, which is weaker than the German
Shepherd and the Rottweiler. Despite having an overly aggressive reputation Pit Bulls don't make
good guard dogs, since they are to trusting of humans and might greet them as a new friend. The Pit
Bull is known to be so caring to children that they are called nanny dogs. Pit Bulls have 31% more
likelihood to attack an unknown individual. There is thought to be about 2.5 million Pit Bulls in
america. In the year 1991, England and Wales banned Pit Bulls. At any given time there is a media
scare about a specific breed and before Pit Bulls there was German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers,
and even Bloodhounds had a media scare. Though Pit Bulls have been around since the 1800's they
only recently began to gain popularity in the 1980's when there was crack downs on dog fighting
rings. The most well known crackdown was in 2007, when Michael Vick's ring was busted and 51
dogs were seized, of those

What Is Syria Essay

  • 1. What Is Syria Essay In the political and social badlands that those residing in this world have come to regard as the middle east, there exists a country by the name of Syria. Like many other countries of the region, this country has large areas of arid land not fit for habitation. However, unlike some of the other countries of this region, Syria boasts large hospitable coastal, forested, and mountainous areas that have diverse seasons ranging from extreme heat to snow in the winter months. Most of the habitable areas of Syria reside along the western coastline of the region or along the eastern plateau, which boasts large areas of mountainous and often densely forested areas. This diversity has given Syria some social wiggle room that its neighboring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But alas, this feat of stability, was to be short lived. By early 2011, the country balanced on the razor's edge as it was stressed by severe socioeconomic issues as well as by the turmoil of the changing political climate raging through its neighboring countries. For it was at this time, that a wave of violent and nonviolent protests swept the entire region of the middle east in what has come to be known as the Arab Spring . This season of protests led to toppling of regimes, political figures, and even the caused the destabilization of entire governments. Some of these included: Protests that forced Hosni Mubarak (president of Egypt at the time) to resign his office , Mass Demonstrations that forced the government of Yemen to crack down on the protesters leaving anywhere from 200 to 2,000 people dead, and the exile of Ben Ali (the autocratic ruler of Tunisia) as deadly demonstrations ravaged the country . This did not bode well for Syria, as the Assad regime was having trouble dealing with their population at the time. In his article, "For America, An Arab Winter" Aaron Miller noted that, "support in Syria was increasingly tenuous as a result of Assad's repression and whose Islamist trope seemed out of step with the non–ideological, youthful, secular character of the opposition in the Arab street." Make no mistake, the regime that the Assad's had established brought much needed stability to the state of Syria, but it did so at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

("Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History."). Sid Grossman, a Photo League photographer expressed this sentiment, summarizing the role photography had on America in the 1940's and 50's. During this era, photojournalism climaxed, causing photographers to join the bandwagon or react against it. The question of whether photography can be art was settled a long time ago. Photographers like Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and lee Friedlander looked at the world through the "astonish–me" viewpoint. Diane Nemerove, or better known as Diane Arbus, was an American Documentary Photographer known for her compelling, yet often disturbing portraits of people from the edges of society. An example is the 1962 image of The Boy with the Hand Grenade in Central Park. As a native New Yorker, Diane Arbus photographed the people of the city, but not just the everyday. Arbus sought out those at the edge of society. She depicts the daily life, but with an emphasis on the abnormality of the commonplace. • 16. William Somerset Maugham : The Formula Of Life William Somerset Maugham: The Formula to Life "My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror"(Quotes). Playwright and novelist William Somerset Maugham was no stranger when it came to admitting he had a promiscuous private life. After running away from his home in England, Maugham began publishing books and plays he had written that soon made him thousands of dollars. With this new lifestyle, Maugham could afford the elegant parties, couture clothing, and intricate homes in the French Riviera with facilitation. He had an exciting and somewhat risqué way of life that was unheard of during the 1920's. Maugham was known to interact with both genders sexually, and even the most carnal of his companions described him as the most sexually enthusiastic man they had ever known. He had the lifestyle of many celebrities who are exposed in today's tabloids. However, just like many celebrities of today, Maugham was secretly a very unhappy man. This depression and search for life's true meaning are seen vividly throughout his works. In Maugham's broken, unhappy world, he brings to his readers a sense of repeated conformity and reflection of himself with his writing. William Somerset Maugham's novels The Painted Veil, Magician, and The Razor's Edge employ a recurring formula for weak females, intelligent males, and the sad state of their marriages Maugham incorporates one recurring statement ... She immediately discovered the bird too, just sitting in a long–dead cornfield. The ruckus startled the Bald Eagle, and began to fly away. My mother attempted to draw out her phone to take a picture of the beautiful bird, only to lose control of the device, dropping it on the vehicle's floor. The marvelous bird flew directly above our vehicle, merely feet away, leaving me to this day striving to understand and appreciate all this country has provided me. Since then I have regarded and understood more about our world, furthermore, how much I have been given. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet the protagonist Hamlet is able to relate to this quote as he is often dancing on the thin line between sanity and insanity. The Perils And Privileges Of Auto Ethnography Reading Response Week 4: The Perils and Privileges of Auto–Ethnography Although not mentioned in this week's Marshall/Rossman chapter, feminism and autoethnography has popped up before in prior readings, so there is some familiarity with both concepts. Now comes what their synthesis looks like in practice. In this light the readings forced me to re–examine positionality, especially in the framework of auto–ethnography. At first I thought this was too obvious but in light of the titular question Stacey asks – "Can There Be a Feminist Ethnography?" – the feminist researcher's proximity to the data and interpretation positionality becomes the fraught answer to consider, Her awkwardness (if that's the right word) in balancing the tightrope as an ethical researcher between product and personal integrity feels unexpected yet palpable. The dilemma she faces "forced my recognition that conflicts of interest and emotion between the ethnographer as authentic, related person (i.e. participant), and as exploiting researcher (i.e. observer)" (23). I feel as if she as a feminist researcher was startled by the dilemma she faced and wonder if her surprise was compounded by not anticipating it . He caused the corruption of Thebes by trying to measure his powers with the powers of the Gods which Tiresias foreshadowed that it won't have a good ending. In my opinion the major cause of the downfall of Thebes is the poor ability of Creon to tell apart what's right and what's wrong. However the unusual thing about the future is the dystopian outlook, which is not the habitual preconception we most have. The special effects and fight scenes did much to increase the entertainment level of the film. But most of all the aspect of the film that entertains the audience the most is the presence of Harrison Ford, who still is to this day a huge star. And stars like him make people want to go and watch a film. Blade runner addresses some of the eternal questions that humans have asked for centuries, for example: "What does it mean to be human?" "What is reality?" "What is the difference between real memories and artificial memories?" "How does our environment affect us?" "What are the moral issues we face in the creation of artificial people?" Moreover, Scott's better films reach toward higher truths. In his essay "Towards a Dynamic Economics", Harrod put forward a theory which can be consid¬ered as truly dynamic. Explanation of secular trends is his main theme. Electric razors are initially expensive and required maintenance (which involves sending the razor to the factory for repairs from time to time). Additionally, without electrical outlets or electricity electric razors are utterly pointless. Benefits of Using a Straight Razor A straight razor will provide a better shave. • 44. Antigone Family The play Antigone composed by Sophocles relays the dispute between Antigone and Creon, two tragic heroes, and their opposing philosophies on honor. Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, fell on separate sides of the battlefield. Fighting for Creon's kingdom, Eteocles is to receive a proper, honorable burial. While Polynices, for the rebels, " is to be left unburied, left to be eaten by dogs and vultures" (131). Although both authority and family are present, the reader can interpret that to Sophocles, family holds more importance over authority. The actions presented by Ismene convey the importance of family to Sophocles. For example, Antigone argues the proper burial for her fallen brother, Polynices, to her sister Ismene who, "cannot act [a]gainst the State" (128). While Ismene is initially siding with authority, she eventually converts to family. After Antigone is caught in the act of burying her brother and is sentenced to death, Ismene, "can [not] bear to live, if [Antigone] must die " (141). Through this action the reader can interpret that Haemon saw no reason to live without his beloved Antigone. Upon hearing the dreadful news, Eurydice, Haemon's mother, demonstrated another act of love by, " [driving] the sharp sword home into her heart" (161). The project team recommends that the company should position the product as a distinct mainstream product, dubbing it "Clean Edge by Paramount" in order to produce growth in sales from new product innovation. The importance of placing the product in a mainstream position is to successfully launch an innovative product creating more market share for Paramount and for Clean Edge to become the most sought out razor in the industry. Failing to take this route and deciding to position the product in a niche would only give the new product a limited amount of consumers, preventing Clean Edge from reaching its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clean Edge by Paramount gives customers a clear perception of the advantages of the product without being concerned about other product categories. Critique of Rejected Options There are several reasons why the project team should reject the first option in positioning Clean Edge in a niche. The first reason concerns the pricing strategy. Placing the product in a niche position would make the razor more expensive in the retail sense. Catering to the more involved groomers places the product at a suggested retail price at $12.99. Placing the product at a higher price in the niche position could only lead Clean Edge Razor to a limited market. Rosenberg suggested placing the product in the niche position for a year or two; however, this could lead to prevention in attracting a wider customer base for the product during that time frame. Another reason Paramount should not place in the niche position is their significantly low marketing budget compared to their competitors. In just media advertising alone, Radiance spent $16 million on Naiv. For Clean Edge, the cost for advertising for the niche position would only be $7 million. Because Radiance is spending more than twice as much on their advertising compared to what Paramount would spend in the niche position, Radiance would gain an advantage in covering more ground to promote its product. In Somerset Maugham's novel The Razor's Edge, some characters think that wealth, social status, and material possessions will bring them happiness. Larry Darrell is the only character that doesn't care for any of these things, and he is the only character that Maugham says is happy. Through these differing ideas of happiness, Maugham creates the argument that happiness is not achieved through materialism. Materialism is a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values. When Maugham's character goes to a party with Elliott he "did not know whether to admire his indomitable spirit or to lament that at his age, stricken with mortal illness, he should still retain his passion for society." At the end of his life Elliott had nothing left; he was abandoned by all his friends and was no longer being invited to parties. What makes his death pathetic is the fact that he never gives up on his social life. Despite his mortal illness and his lack of friends he still thinks that responding to his party invitation is worthy of his time. His entire goal in life was pointless in the end. It's almost like Maugham is slapping him in the face for choosing the wrong path. By presenting Elliott's life as the wrong path Maugham tells us that social status isn't the way to happiness either. She understood that her love for Larry would not be enough for his happiness, so she let him go. She married Gray not for her happiness, but to appease her family. Her ability to relinquish her emotions, future, and her family, made her selfless. Elizabeth was engaged to Larry for the first two parts of The Razor's Edge, but her love for him continued throughout the novel. Larry was lost though and felt the need to explore an avenue that he was not accustomed to. By being engaged he felt anchored or forced to stay in Chicago because that is what society was dictating. This meant that with the small amount of money that Larry had they could not raise a family together and travel the world like Larry wanted in an "acceptable" way. Introduction A leader in Human Resources (HR) Management must be a professional, dedicated to self–awareness and stewardship of the HR profession. Management leadership is an ongoing responsibility and an art that develops over time. According to the late George Terry (1981), the primary task of a manger is to enable a working environment that will induce and maintain an enthusiastic desire to accomplish work among employees (p. 90). Leadership progresses with experience, observation, and interaction with employees. The critical understanding of leadership is being able to motivate employees to invest their personal interest in the organization and provide a purpose for the duties they perform. To do this, there are multiple facets of effective leadership to discuss; keeping in mind that individuality is key. Employees are people and with that comes psychological, physiological, and motivational differences. An effective leader must understand these differences and adapt to each employee on an individual basis. Employees will differ in leadership styles and their preferred language of appreciation. Understanding the different styles of each employee will enable effective leadership and encourage an atmosphere of cooperation, cohesiveness, and dedication. Leadership Styles Research compounded by Daniel Goleman concluded that there are six styles of leadership. Each style being a reflection of the leader's emotional intelligence. The term FGM covers a range of procedures, which are also referred to as female circumcision and introcision. FGM is found extensively in Africa and is also indigenous to other parts of the world. The age and time at which FGM is practiced differs from community to community, and can be carried out from as early as a few days after birth, to immediately after the birth of a woman's first child. Roman Polanski's Repulsion Essays Roman Polanski's Repulsion Analysis of an aspect of visual form in the film 'Repulsion' In the 1964/65 film 'Repulsion' by Roman Polanski, the story is about the conflict between reality and fantasy or sanity and insanity inside the main character's mind – Carol played by Catherine Deneuve. Therefore the narrative technique of symbolism is used to display visually to the film's audience what happens to Carol's mind. In this particular instance, the degeneration of Carol's state of mind is symbolised. Carol's state of mind degenerates, or breaks down because of her repulsion of masculinity in a sexual context. Obviously the camera then pans to see this – but it can hold onto the shot for longer than Carol looks at it, giving the audience a chance to understand why Carol might look at it. As her state of mind being like it is, what it symbolises only needs a casual look or glance at it from Carol. As a symbol itself, the empty 'hut' represents a pathway or tunnel to a 'dark' kind of life – one filled with despair, depression, anxiety, anger, fear, hate, and/or any other types of negative human qualities. Near the end of the film, this 'dark' image is shown again, just after Carol kills the landlord with the cut– throat razor. Her face is kept in shadow – an oval of near black – and is framed by her hair, which enhances this image further because it is blond. As I have implied before, Carol's understanding of life around her is distorted. She frequently sees cracks appearing in walls – which can be read as cracks in her mind. In one instance, Carol sees a crack in the pavement on her way to work. She becomes engrossed by it, and sits down on a bench by it to simply look at it. The shot of the crack taken over her right shoulder shows that the crack runs between her feet. It then splits into two cracks, making the entire crack look like a 'Y'. This suggests that it is used as a symbol to show two paths in life to take: the first being the good, realistic or sane path; the other being the bad, fantastic or insane path. The passage also serves as witness to the scope of the author's observant compassion. In his re–creation of the nature–image in fiction, Baldwin transcends misty transcendentalism.
