The Assigned Portrait By Anthony Van Dyck
The assigned portrait is a work by Anthony van Dyck that dates back to 1621, presumably finished before the artist left his
native city of Antwerp for Italy (Genua). From the title, we gather that Van Dyck is depicting a family of three. The father is
sat on the right, while the mother is sat on the left; they are both facing the viewer. Their young child is positioned on the
mother s lap, its head turned towards the father. The colour scheme includes rich, dark colours for the attire of the couple, a
vibrant red colour for the drapery behind the mother and similar shades of dark green for the mother s skirt, the child s skirt
and the velvet fabric on the furniture approximate to the child s skirt. Additionally, the inset of the mother s dress ... Show

The bear little resemblance to other depictions of Wildens, whose satyr like characteristics and sharp glance are considered
distinctive. However, the features of the father in our case study look oddly familiar. That is because they are much more
similar to the characteristics of the father in the portrait The Family of Cornelis de Vos (1584/5 1651), also by Van Dyck. In
addition to the facial features, Van Dyck diligently portrayed the fine lace ruff and sleeves of the man s attire and the tightly
starched ruff of the woman (The State Hermitage Museum, Family Portrait ) in both portraits, pairing those with delicate
hand gestures, present in both paintings. To boot, Van Dyck used the same landscape art as a background for the father s
head and the same deep red coloured blinds behind the mother. The colour schemes and even the golden button details and
the wooden handle on the furniture where the mother is sat are alike, too. Given these similarities (and the fact that de Vos
painted a portrait of his own family during the same period), it might be possible that the family in the portrait is actually
that of Cornelis de Vos. (Dickinson, Sir Anthony Van Dyck ) Since we know that Magdalena, the youngest daughter of de
Vos was born in 1619, it is possible that the family portrait below was painted in 1620 and our case study was actually

Genetic Engineering Is The Precision Of Gene Transfer
As defined by Halford and Shewry (2000), genetic Modification is the manipulation of organism development, structure or
composition by the insertion of specific DNA sequences. This may be for the purpose of expressing a gene that is not
naturally found in the plant or to modify endogenous genes (Halford et al., 2000). In a way, we have been genetically
modifying our food for thousands of years. Since the dawn of agriculture, our ancestors were selecting and breeding plants
and livestock with the desired phenotypes, such as bigger cows or plants. One particular difference between conventional
methods of obtaining better crop yields and modern genetic engineering is the precision of gene transfer. Getting a child

The new DNA found in this genetic plant can be referred to as recombinant DNA. According to Hillis, Sadava, Hill and
Price (2013), recombinant DNA is a single DNA molecule containing DNA sequences from 2 or more sources.
History
According to Woosley (2012), genetic engineering as we know it today relied on our knowledge of DNA. DNA was
discovered by Russian scientist Andrei Nikolaevitch Belozersky in 1935. In 1973 a student at Stanford came up with
revolutionizing idea that DNA could be man made (rDNA). In the 1970 s 80 s a conference was held to create guidelines for
the safe use of genetically modified DNA and a genetics engineer gained a patent on a living organism, a bacterium that eats
crude oil (Woosley, 2012). In 1982 the first GMO was approved by the FDA; Humulin, insulin which is produced by
genetically engineered E. coli bacteria (Woosley, 2012).
How GMOs Are Created
In order to make a genetically engineered or transgenic organism, scientists must first find the desired trait, be it frost
resistance or salinity tolerance, and identify an organism with this trait. Scientists then take a sample of the plant or
organism and use genome mapping technology to find where the trait is located within the DNA. Restriction enzymes are
used by scientists to cut the DNA into fragments that can then be manipulated in the

Abstract: In this paper we present a load measurement scheme for home energy management system with energy demand
management. The proposed system will have control of various appliances that are available in the home. It manages
household loads according to their predefined priority and guarantees the total household power consumption below certain
levels. The home energy management system will receive the demand response from the utility side. The goal of the system
is to encourage the consumer to use less energy during peak hours or to move the time of energy use to off peak times such
as nighttime and weekends. Thus the high peak to average ratio (PAR) of power will be avoided and also we adopt real time
pricing. The utility company use real time dynamic pricing to coordinate demand responses to the benefit of the overall
system. Hence for this purpose we need to measure the power consumed by the various appliances that are available in the
home.

Disadvantages Of Biometric System
1. Introduction
Biometric technology provides several advantages over conventional security methods like pin, password, key, card etc. The
Biometric system grants authentication by different physiological and behavioral traits of a person.
Biometric systems are basically of two types based on the use of a biometric trait for identification and verification. The
types of biometric system are
Unimodal biometric system
Multimodal biometric system
The Unimodal system has an only single source of information for authorization of a valid user.
But sometimes single trait do not provide good quality of sample due to deformations problem in a biometric trait such as

Problems which occur in unimodal biometric systems are alleviated by a new approach i.e. multibiometric. Multimodal
systems are the combination of more than one unimodal biometric traits. It includes more than one modalities of a single
user for providing better acceptability, accuracy, performance and reliable authentication [2]. Fig 1 Different category of

Physical Examination And Laboratory Testing
Introduction to case study
Genitourinary problem in female have a number of symptoms and these symptoms requires clinical skills to focus on
problem history and examination. The context of assessing genitourinary problem is based on a number issues such as
gynaecological background, family history, obstetric history and sexual history. Having lower pain being experienced in
upper urinary track and iliac fossa pain experienced in ectopic pregnancies are some of the symptoms produced by
genitourinary pathology(Detollenaere, et al., 2015). According to description of 51 years old female, having lower
abdominal pain and 100 degrees temperature and the problem persisting for a while should undertake genitourinary
examination as well as laboratory tests. Therefore, the study reveals genitourinary problem from examination, findings and
treatment framework.
Physical examination and laboratory testing
Physical examination involves assessment of vital signs, temperature, respiratory and pulse rate and Blood pressure.
Generally, physician should observe general appearance of comfort or distress of patient, apparent state of health, state of
hydration, color and nutrition status. Furthermore, it is important to match the patient s physical appearance with the stated
age. Getting to abdominal inspection and examination, physician should assess abdominal contour, scars, symmetry and
dilatation of the veins. The movement of the abdominal walls in relation to respiration are also essential

The Character Of Naomi Nakane In Obasan, By Joy Kogawa
Naomi is always the good, silent child who does what s expected of her, she takes whatever is given to her, for awhile
without any complaints. In Joy Kogawa s novel, Obasan, the main character, Naomi Nakane, chronicles her life with
distance, and it is through minor character like her brother, Stephen, and their actions that we see the depth and impact of
Naomi s passive nature.
At the start of the book, Naomi describes herself as being a part of her mother, like a branch to a tree. She often hides behind
her mother and is completely silent. Stephen on the other hand, is the star child; musically gifted from birth. With [his]
practice time each night (Kogawa 62) Naomi was constantly forced to listen to Stephen play his music, and as a child she
would sit and watch him, but not just him, it would be her father and mother, too. Everyone in Naomi s immediate family

as they grew up, Naomi continued to be the observer while Stephen was the one in the spotlight, Steven comes in second in
the talent show... All of Granton is proud of Stephen (242). Stephen was the talk of the town, everyone knew who he was
and Naomi was just Stephen s sister. Even academically they were compared, and still Naomi could not compete: Not like
your brother, are you? [a teacher] said once, returning a poor paper (242). There was nothing that Naomi had that could
compete with her brother s intelligence and musical talent. And so this, along with other things may have lead

How Social Class Affects Health
All over the world status hierarchy and social class are a common concept of how well we live our lives, however they
affect our lives more than we think. Social class can affect many things such as education, opportunities presented to us,
economic factors, and even our health. Recently socioeconomic status effects on health has become a more popular topic of
discussion but is nothing new to researchers. Research on socioeconomic inequalities in health in the UK has a long history.
In the early part of the 20th century the British government introduced questions on occupation in the decennial census. This
allowed researchers to examine health outcomes by social class. (Knott, Dr Laurence). Researchers have discovered social
class can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social class is determined by many things such as status, culture, employment, background, and wealth, along with other
factors. Being in a certain class affects your health and even the type of health care you receive. Males in a higher social
class live on average 9 years longer than males in more deprived areas or lower social classes and are in good health for 85
percent of their lives compared to 70 percent (Knott, Dr Laurence..). I believe social class affects health because of things
such as living conditions, lack of resources for health care and education, and that lower class people prefer and are fine
with less healthy lifestyles. People in higher classes are usually very successful and motivated in most aspect of life while
people in lower classes may not be. I don t think there is much we can do to resolve this problem as most of these problems
are dependent on each person s life choices and not much will change if we cannot fix this problem. Why social class has
such a big on health will always be a question and I dont think theres an exact answer for it.
There are believed to be many reason why social class affects health. One of these reasons are the bad habits or addictions
that are associated with the lower class. One of the biggest habits or addictions most commonly associated with the lower
class is smoking. An article from the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (Levinson, Arnold H. )Is

Allergy Model Of Addiction
There are many models of addiction. It appears that addiction is still not totally understood by the establishment due to the
different interactions including everything from family dynamics, genetics, economic availability of substances to brain
chemistry, morality, and social interactions as well as other criteria. The following is a sample of four different models of
addiction with some of the positives and negatives of each model.
The allergy model was born from Dr. Silkworth s opinion explained to the founder of AA. As Freed quoted Johnson in
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON ADDICTION Wilson left Towns Hospital with a new perspective on alcoholism: He
was physically sick, not morally weak as most Americans labeled alcoholics (Freed, 2012, p. 33). The positive side of the
allergy model was that the explanation that Silkworth gave to Bill Wilson removed the shame of moral failure that blocked
Wilson from recovery. AA has been the most effective alcoholic recovery program to date. If the allergy model perspective
has helped other alcoholics gain freedom that could be construed as a positive thing. The allergy model is a bit lacking
though; it doesn t explain the allergy and why people tend toward something they re allergic to. Furthermore, it s just based
upon a Dr. s opinion and not any data that he had compiled.
The syndrome model seems to cover all its bases with its definition which is one of its benefits. According to Freed s
understanding of the syndrome

Corpse Bride Symbolism
The character that really caught my attention was Emily. Considering the fact she has been dead for year now Burton did a
splendid job creating a mysteriously alluring corpse bride. Relating death to the color blue because blue is the coldest color,
Emily is blue from head to toe except for her subtle but sweet pink lips. Corpse Bride had me at the maggot. In multiple
scenes the corpse bride s eye falls out and a maggot comes from inside her head and gives her advice. I feel the eye falling
out is to symbolize Emily being half blind to what s going on around her. The fact that Burton can use stop motion and have
an eyeball fall from Emily s face is pure magic. Based on true events dating back to the 19th century about gangs that would

Bullying And Its Effects On The Workplace
Bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in today s society. It is most commonly thought to be found in schools or
online, but it is becoming increasing popular in the workplace. Organizations must establish anti bullying policies to stop
this detrimental behavior. Targets of workplace bullying often suffer from a multitude of health problems such as depression
and anxiety. In this paper, we will examine the reasons why bullying has become so common in the workplace, the
damaging effects, and what can be done to help stop this behavior. Bullying should be considered as a problem for the entire
organization, not just an issue for the target. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is
repeated, health harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators (WBI, 2015).
Bullying can come in many forms including abusive conduct that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating. Along with the
verbal abuse, there can be sabotage, or work interference that impacts work performance. The WBI states that 35% of the
workforce in the United States have been bullied. This equals 1 in 3 workers who have been victimized. As a result of this
staggering statistic, organizations must address this problem. This paper will expose the traumatic effects of bullying, and
will show interventions and recommendations for a solution to this growing social injustice. Bullying, or mobbing, was first

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Scientific Management
Frederic Winslow Taylor (1865 1915) was an engineer and most importantly an innovator who affects the way many
organizations function even today. In his time he introduced the term of scientific management which refers to a system
where leaders are capable of managing and workers are able to execute the tasks given by the managers in the most efficient
and productive way in a mass production environment with the basic element of job specialization (McKenna, 2012, p.7).
According to Taylor, scientific management should include the selection of the best qualified people to work in a company,
the incentives to work harder and as a result more efficient by awarding them with higher salaries as well as the authority
given to the managers to control and evaluate the working process. Also, dealing with fatigue of labour force by
implementing rest pauses. Taylor believed that in this way, managers and employees would be more interested in work and
would try to maintain their high wages and as a consequence would be more productive (Bagad, 2008, p.20). In order to
make this theory feasible he developed four main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One drawback is that distinction of planning and doing has a negative impact especially on companies with numerous and
specialized human resources. In this case, neither people have the ability to be creative and constructive nor have the
opportunity to take an initiative (Ghuman and Aswathappa, 2010, p.135). Another drawback is that Taylor system can be
described as an environment in which workforce is treated as a machine and not as individuals who can influence the
production of the firm (Dutt, 2008, p.21).Finally, scientific management was largely criticized by the workers themselves
due to the fact that the efficiency which has a central role in company s productivity lead to a decrease in demand for
employees and made them insecure because there was a strong possibility to lose their jobs (Singla, 2009 2010,

Improving Current System Of Police Reporting
5.5 Improvement to Current Situation
According to five factors that have been proposed, we had suggested some recommendations to improve current system of
police reporting in Malaysia which is the Police Reporting System (PRS) to ensure that the function of the PRS will
definitely helped to record and transfer the report in a better and easier way.
5.5.1 Role
As mentioned above, role is very important factor in police reporting in order to make the report, received statement from
complainant, and most important thing is to transfer the report to another police officers. As a recommendation, police
organization in Malaysia can organize or provide a training program for police personnel on duty at the enquiry office about
the use and maintenance of the PRS so that they can write the report quickly and also they know the function for every
single menu and button of the PRS. Plus, if the PRS are breakdown, the police personnel will know how to fix the problem.
Thus, it wills not wasting time to wait for the technical team to fix the problem and also they no need to write the report
manually in POL 55 and re type it once the PRS was fixed.
Besides that, enquiry officer also are encourage to more than one language. For instance, if the complainant who come over
to lodge a report does not know to speak Bahasa Malaysia, the enquiry officer are able to speak another language like
English, Mandarin, Tamil or any language that easy to understand by the complainant.

Management Control System
CHAPTER 22
MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEMS, TRANSFER PRICING,
AND MULTINATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
22 1 A management control system is a means of gathering and using information to aid and coordinate the planning and
control decisions throughout the organization and to guide the behavior of its managers and employees. The goal of the
system is to improve the collective decisions within an organization.
22 2 To be effective, management control systems should be (a) closely aligned to an organization s strategies and goals, (b)
designed to fit the organization s structure and the decision making responsibility of individual managers, and (c) able to

22 12 Reasons why a dual pricing approach to transfer pricing is not widely used in practice include:
1. The manager of the supplying division uses a cost based method to record revenues and does not have sufficient
incentives to control costs.
2. This approach does not provide clear signals to division managers about the level of decentralization top management
wants. 3. This approach tends to insulate managers from the frictions of the marketplace because costs, not market prices,
affect the revenues of the supplying division. 4. It leads to problems in computing the taxable income of subunits located in
different tax jurisdictions.
22 13 Disagree. Cost and price information are often useful starting points in the negotiation process. Costs, particularly
variable costs of the selling division, serve as a floor below which the selling division would be unwilling to sell. Prices that
the buying division would pay to purchase products from the outside market serves as a ceiling above which the buying
division would be unwilling to buy. The price negotiated by the two divisions will, in general, have no specific relationship
to either costs or prices. But the negotiated price will generally fall between the variable costs based floor and the market
price based ceiling.

Essay on Texas s Political Culture
Political Culture
Texas political culture is one that can be described as a combination of three main ideas: individualistic, traditionalism and
moralism. Considering Texas and its overwhelming 254 counties we can see these main ideas undoubtedly. The 254
counties each have their own general set of ideas, attitudes and beliefs. The whole state of Texas is simply not just
considered individualistic, traditionalism, or moralism, it is considered all three. Individualistic, traditionalism and moralism
are all strong values that coexist in our society and they all affect how we as the people live our lives. A political culture

Individualism is the belief of self reliance. Texas is also known for being on its own. Which leads to its famous saying, you
ve got nobody to blame but yourself. They are all about being the self made man. An individualist prefers privacy, is
suspicious of public institutions, and is an independent contractor. This attitude ties into our low active government.
Government is sought out to be at low cost and out of the way of its voters. Texas government is very limited, and has a
legislature that meets biennially. Due to our isolation, public education is under funded and is at its high in many court
battles and legislative conflicts. The heart of individualism would be laissez faire. In Britannica, laissez faire is the policy of
minimum governmental interference in the economic affairs of individuals and society. Laissez faire is basically telling
government to leave them alone. The whole concept is to keep minimum government interference in business.
Moralism is all about the community and a commonwealth. They are suspicious of private institutions and interests. An
example would be social security, social welfare programs, and public education programs. A moralist is all about being
equal with people, everyone needs a fair share. Austin Texas has a lot of business there. They are big or moralism because of
its big community.

are some of the different types of weather a carpenter might have to work through. They have to be able to work in small
spaces, so they can get certain jobs finished. Carpenters need to be able to work in many different positions so they can get
at things to work on them. Being a carpenter means that I will need to know how to use all kinds of tools. I will have to use
anything from hand tools, to machines, to computers. Hand tools are the widest variety of tools that carpenters have to use.
These hand tools range from using levels, to make sure things are level to the ground, and tape measures, so I know how
long or how tall something is. I need to also use power saws so I can cut the piece of wood that I need, or a wood chisel so I
can shape something. Carpenters need to be able to use computers, so they can draft a house and see how it should look
when the project is completed. There are three different kinds of carpenters. There are residential carpenters,

Machiavelli The Prince Research Paper
Machiavelli on Principalities and Republics
Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of history s most renowned political theorists. Truly a Renaissance
Man , he excelled in many disciplines and was an avid scholar of the ancients, but his most enduring legacy has been his
political theories, particularly those outlined in The Prince. Popular culture, however, has a skewed perception of
Machiavelli s own personal political ideals. Although Machiavelli s The Prince discusses governance of a principality from
the point of view of the prince, his longer work, The Discourses, extolls the virtues of republics and provides a detailed
analysis of the republics of Ancient Italy compared to modern Italian republics and more closely ... Show more content on

Although he does say that these princes have achieved their power and status through immoral means, he also states that
whether or not they are justified depends on whether cruelty be well or badly used. Well used are those cruelties (if it is
permitted to speak well of evil) that are carried out in a single stroke, done out of necessity to protect oneself, and are not
continued but are instead converted into the greatest possible benefits for the subjects (Machiavelli, 106). He indicates that
often times the prince, as a ruler of his people, cannot make the same choices that would be considered moral for a normal
person. As a ruler, he must consider the good of all of the people, and in doing so must sometimes choose the route which
on the surface appears to be immoral and evil, but will in theory create the most good for his people while also maintaining
or bolstering the prince s power over the people.
In spite of these statements, not all of his instructions are as unethical as his critics have made them out to be. Later, in
Chapter IX, he states that a prince must have the friendship of the common people; otherwise he will have no support in
times of adversity (109). It is out of pragmatism, and not morality, that he makes this assertion. The good will and well
being of the people are conducive to maintaining order and may help preserve the prince s position of power. First and
foremost, however, is that preservation of power for the

Exhibition Review – Dale Chihuly, the Halcyon Gallery Essay
Exhibition Review Dale Chihuly, the Halcyon Gallery
Dale Chihuly is an American artist, born September 20th, 1941 who is known for his glass sculptures. One of his most well
known pieces is the blue and green glass sculpture hanging in the front entrance of the Victoria Albert Museum in London
(figure 1). His work has included over 200 museum collections worldwide, and I visited his exhibition in the Halcyon
Gallery on New Bond Street in London on the 23rd of January 2012.
The entire exhibition was made up of glass sculptures fitting into several different genres created by the artist; for example
Seaforms , Persians , both created in the 1980 s, and Fiori , which he created in the 2000 s. Chihuly explored a variety of

As the pieces were 3D, standing out from the wall, interesting coloured shadows and highlights were created with the
lighting on the white walls. The viewers could walk beneath the pieces to view the underneath of each bowl like disc, and
see the detail of different coloured glass swirled into the piece. The curving edges of the discs created a natural feel to the
piece, softening it.
Another part of the exhibition that I found visually stimulating were the Basket themed pieces, created in the 1970 s, as I
thought their smooth edges and insides captured and reflected the lights really effectively (figures 8 and 9). I also really
liked the multiple baskets stacked inside one another, showing how Chihuly can handcraft the basket shapes on a variety of
scales. The lip wrap on each basket is often a contrasting colour, developed from the tradition of Venetian glassmaking, and
is a trademark of Chihuly s work. I feel the bold colour lip wraps help to draw the viewer s eye into the centre of the
baskets, revealing the smaller baskets within.
I really liked the contrast in the colour of the two chandelier pieces in the windows of the Halcyon Gallery (figures 10 and
11). The deep red and blues within the Cranberry and Clear Chandelier and the Dusky Sky Chandelier draw the attention of
passers by, encouraging you to step closer and view the intricacies of each handcrafted piece of the two chandeliers. I feel
they were the ideal pieces of work to advertise the

`` We Wants Our Rights And We Don t Care How
The opening line on Marat/Sade posters read, We wants our rights and we don t care how. We want our revolution NOW .
The disturbing picture alongside portrays a blood soaked arm grasping an equally crimson knife from which blood drips.
Ever since its first English language production, in 1964, Peter Weiss play has proved a confronting experience for
audiences, and Barry French s production at the New Theatre does not disappoint. A play within a play written by the
infamous Marquis de Sade during his imprisonment in an asylum, French sought to represent a re enactment of the twilight
hours of the French Revolutionary ending with Marat s murder. This links back to the opening line and the partisans

Immediately afterwards she is seen calling for Simmone, her attendant and lover to calm her itching skin with cold water.
Despite being passionately committed to collective action for social reform, her physical handicaps serve as a reminder that
her character is merely an extension of Sade s writing and any further personal action requires his permission . In contrast,
Sade often remained silent save for his occasional polarizing arguments with Marat which solidified his position as a creator
rather than just an another character. Furthermore, his ability to physically pace and project a louder presence in contrast to
Marat within the performance space highlights an another aspect of power separation between the two central characters.
I believe that such displays of power inequality amongst characters such as Sade and Marat could be further explored
through the cage like setting stated earlier. Upon entering the intimate yet slightly claustrophobic theatre, the audience and I
were faced with a unique and privileged seating arrangement where three rows of seating surrounded a central metal cage.
The cage is reminiscent of a prison compound with high iron fences that have wrapped around the stage except for a single
entrance/exit in a far corner. It was much later in the performance did I realize that French usage of literary place was
ingenious. The outer action consist of the Coulmiers and the Parisian elite (the audience) while the

We see the number of vehicles around us in our daily life and everyone needs it but with the population increase, vehicles
increased last decades in large quantity. But it created disturbances to the human life such as huge traffic, large sound, crime
cases accidents, such as stealing of vehicles etc. and therefore we need management of vehicle. As a result, there is a lot of
work going on to improve the transportation of vehicles. Out of these, Indian car plate recognition system is the most
attractive research issue and this result manuscripts discusses some practical aspect of the recognizing number written on
vehicle number plate. A Vehicle Plate Recognition System is a tracking system that identifies the vehicle so that the car is
tracked down through our existing database. Each Number plates are unique for each vehicle, its takes the unique
identification of each vehicle all over country. So its need to be monitor and recognize. We can track number plates in two
ways firstly manually and second is automatically. In India traffic police noted manually the vehicle number plate. It is
complex and not accurate reading. But automatic number plate recognition is the fast and efficient based system. Its helps to
track the maximum number of system at a time with an accurate reading. Automatic number plate system uses the image

Monroe Doctrine In Early American History
The Monroe doctrine is an exemplary piece of work that has helped the U.S. throughout history, and will most likely
continue helping us in the future. These assistances from the Monroe doctrine include: keeping European settlers out in
early American history when the document was made, helped us expand to the west, and allowed us to defend Cuba from
the Russians. In early American history there was a lot of conflict between European powers, and the U.S. mostly for their
interference in the American ways of life and constantly creating settlements on our land. Once the Monroe document was
made, it struck the nerve of those European domestic disturbers and gave us the right to stop those hinder some acts. Sure
while we would have eventually ended up doing the same thing the Monroe document did not only make it legal but started
that process a lot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1836 the U.S. used the Monroe doctrine to deny the British an alliance with the shiny, new republic of Texas. Then on
December, second, 1845, president James Polk told congress that the Monroe document should be strictly enforced and we
should rapidly move west eliminating all resistance until we own all of the new world. In 1842 president John Tyler applied
this document to Hawaii forcing the British to end interference and then began bringing Hawaii to the U.S. states. Again in
1852, politicians used the Monroe documents to take the Spanish out of Cuba; they ceded for 20 million and gave us that
land (until allowed legal independence from the U.S. in 1902). This doctrine was used in so many more cases such as 1862,
1870, and 1895. While there is a possibility that we could have done the things we did with Cuba, and the expansion of the
U.S. and so much more without the Monroe doctrine. Again the doctrine made it so much easier, and faster than it would

Free-Will In Herman Melville s Moby Dick
In Herman Melville s Moby Dick, each gam that occurs in the story has significant meaning. These connotations are also
used to create personal interpretations, analysis, and inferences. The first gam that the Pequod encounters is The Albatross,
which transpires in Chapter 52. As the two ships pass each, Ahab calls out to the other captain, asking him if he has seen
Moby Dick: Ship ahoy! Have ye seen the White Whale? (Melville 195). Unlike of what others expect from sailors and ship
captains, Ahab makes no small talk and gets straight to the point because of his preeminent madness and monomaniacal
aspiration for revenge against the White Whale . Immediately after Ahab s question, a sequence of misfortune ensues and
the other captain drops ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The crewmembers of the Town Ho believe Radney s death was because of the direct command of God because of Radney s
unjust acts. This opens up a whole new counterargument regarding fate versus free will. This topic was also touched upon in
Chapter 47, The Mat Maker. By describing the act of Moby Dick to God, Melville reinforces the theme of fate: Everything
happens in the accord of God or the will of the fates. Though the sailors seek for omens and indications of the future, the
accept that they cannot alter their destiny. This acceptance leads some of them, like Ishmael and Stubb, to adopt a carefree
and joyful attitude. Ahab, on the other hand, sets about the task of his fate with stern determination. The account of Radney
and Steelkit reveal a simple theme: power is arbitrary. This story also reverberates fairy tales in which a good looking
peasant or laborer protagonist defeats a nasty authority figure. In most cases, it turns out that the peasant is actually of noble
birth, and the opponent is a fraud. This is grounded on the idea that attractiveness is associated with other positive attributes
and vice versa. Towards the end of the chapter, Ishmael claims that he has seen and talked with Steelkilt since the death of
Radney (Melville 214). At the conclusion of the Town Ho, Steelkilt lives happily ever after, which proves that Moby Dick is
the avenger of injustice. Similar to the Albatross, the Town Ho gam is an essential omen in which the fate of the essential
characters in the novel can be predicted. In addition, Melville utilizes this chapter to mock the spiritual institution in Lima,
by having Ishmael request a priest and the bible at the conclusion of the account, to affirm that the Town Ho s story is

Clinician Psychodynamic Theory Paper
Introduction Theories inform many activities that social workers use within their practice. It provides a lens that allows the
clinician to understand the client s needs in a different way, depending on what theory is being acknowledged. This paper
explores three theories, and how they informed projects performed within the Department of Family Services. Additionally,
the strengths and limitations of each theory are also documented. While no theory fits in to every situation within the social
work practice, each has a concept or quality that can improve overall practice and understanding of the client s being served.

The theory is considered revolutionary due to it s life span model of human development that included eight psychosocial
stages. He purposed that in each stage there is a conflict or crisis that the individual must successfully settle to continue with
their development. Erikson also believed that external and internal forces had significant contributions to how successful an
individual s development would be (Sokol, 2009). The theory is broad and assists in the understanding of development
across the lifespan. Additionally, it takes in to consideration both social and biological factors. The theory has some
criticism as well. Often labeled as vague, some feel the theory is not specific enough and is difficult to test. Furthermore,
other perspectives are that the theory needs to elaborate on how culture impacts the developmental stages (Zhang,

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead
Founded by Søren Kierkegaard, existentialism is a philosophy concerning why life exists and the meaning behind it. It
emphasizes how there is no set purpose in life, and the humans just merely exist in the world. A big idea behind
existentialism is that existence precedes essence. After World War II, existentialism gained popularity in Europe with it
appearing in many works of literature. In the film Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, the main characters of the film
contemplate the meaning behind life throughout the movie, especially during their exchange about death in a box. Similarly,
in Shakespeare s Hamlet, the main character questions life and death in his famous To be or not to be speech. Both of these
works of literature seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this delivery, the audience hears a lot about his thoughts regarding life and death. Hamlet seems to think that dying
ends all the suffering and heartache of living. Hamlet says, To die, to sleep / No more and by a sleep to say we end / The
heartache (Shakespeare III, i, 68 70). To him, death is freedom. This is actually very similar to the existentialism, as they
view death as nothingness and freedom. Furthermore, Hamlet fears death because of the uncertain. He says, But that the
dread of something after death, / The undiscovered country from whose bourn / . . . Thus conscience does make cowards of
us all (Shakespeare III, i, 86 87 and 91). The unknown scares Hamlet. This view is quite a departure from existentialism.
Existentialists believe that death is nothingness not unknown like Hamlet. Moreover, in the end of Hamlet s speech, he
mentions how a well thought out plan may be overthought causing the action not to happen. Hamlet seems to believe that
one should act quickly and not overthink. This seems contrary to existentialism. Existentialists believe in freedom of choice;
however, they believe that choices have a huge impact. Therefore, they should be well thought out and not carried out
rashly. In this sense, Hamlet does not seem to follow the existentialist viewpoint. Hamlet s To be or not to be speech in the
play allows the readers to see his

Introduction
Gregor Johann Mendel, the father of genetics, was born in 1822. He was a priest and scientist who became famous for his
work and studies on the inheritance patterns using pea plants. Gregor Mendel used pea plants known as Pisumsativum in his
research where he developed two fundamental laws of genetics known today as the Law of segregation , and the Law of
independent assortment (Hartl, 1992). The Law of segregation states that when an individual produces a gamete, the copies
of a given gene separate in which each gamete receives only one copy of that gene. The phenotypic ratio in the F2

One of the most important Brassica rapa features is that many generations can be grown in a short period of time for
experimental analysis and comparison(Tsunoda, 1980).Brassica rapaplants are involved in many research works recently in
which they are crossed with other crops to modify their genetic fitness(Tompkins, 1990). The Chi Square ( ) test was used in
this experiment to determine whether the statistical data supports or rejects the hypothesis.
Materials and Methods The experiment was successfully accomplished in classroom where the Brassica Rapa were grown
under suitable conditions. The experiment began by developing a watering system to the plants using the idea of capillary
action. The watering system was made up of a plastic reservoir filled with a certain amount of water and a water mat placed
on the top of the plastic reservoir. This design was helpful in making sure that the plants are receiving water constantly.
Also, one piece of copper sulfate was addedinto the reservoir to avoid any algal growth. Two Styrofoam quads with four
cells each were used for planting the seeds of Brassica Rapa. The cells were numbered from one to eight and a wick was
placed in each cell in a way that allowed water access from the water mat through the capillary action. Each cell was then
half way filled with soil and two fertilizers were placed in

Cognitive Psychology Essay
Cognitive neuroscience categorised as one of the many approaches to human cognition, focuses on the study of both the
brain and behaviour in collaboration. Evidence from such approaches can be used to understand in depth, the mental
processes forming cognition. Consequently, this contributes to our understanding of the mind. Despite vast development in
this field, various challenges are posed as no single method can answer every question raised due to its limitations and
therefore must be combined in order to produce a more reliable understanding. Cognitive psychology was the first to make
progress in the understanding of these areas and accordingly it can be noticed that the tasks used by cognitive
neuroscientists for brain imaging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brain imaging techniques used by cognitive neuroscientist s aid research into such field by analysing the different parts of
the brain that become active when a certain task is performed. The main technique that can be discussed in the role of trying
to understand the mind is Functional magnetic resonance imaging. This technique uses an MRI machine to measure brain
activity by looking at changes in one s blood flow. Stern et al, 1996 carried out research into the parts of the brain crucial for
encoding and storage of information in the long term memory store. Using fMRI, participants were monitored while
performing a novel picture encoding task. Evidence was provided to show that the encoding of these pictures depends on
how the ventral cortical regions and the hippocampal region interact. This highlights a link between the two which therefore
creates a valid contribution to our understanding of the mind as it identifies the parts of the brain crucial for engaging in
essential mental processes. On the other hand, although this link can be identified, the method used by cognitive
neuroscientists cannot explain exactly how the hippocampal formation is crucial in the encoding of information in long term
memory meaning that it cannot be explained as to why it is needed and what exactly would happen to the encoding process
if damage to this formation was to occur. In terms of the technique itself, low temporal resolution and high expense can be
noted as another

When the first Irish immigrants landed on the eastern shores of America in the 18th century, they were met by intolerance
from the Native whites who saw them as a threat to the American way of life. The Dangers of Foreign Immigration, an
article written by Samuel Morse in 1835, exposits much of the anti immigrant sentiment prevalent in the 19th century. To
the natives, the Irish were simply niggers turned inside out (Anonymous Satirism), who came to America as refugees from
Ireland to deprive them of their wealth and prosperity. Thus, the immigrants of Erin were forced to join the ranks of the
slave, the German, and the free Negro laborer at the very bottom of the American diaspora. But instead of accepting the

In addition to Irish progress politically, the sons and daughters of Erin also received help from each other. Written in 1835,
The Dangers of Foreign Immigration was not targeted at the earliest wave of Irish immigrants who arrived in the late 18th
century. Unlike later generations, these early Irish Americans were not necessarily Catholic, and didn t always speak
English, but rather Gaelic. By the time the second wave of Irish immigrants arrived in the mid 19th century, yet more
differences existed between these two waves. Those immigrants who had arrived earlier were by now relatively more
wealthy and established than their more recent counterparts. But through their common threads Irish men and women, the
established communities provided financial and political aid to their newly arriving brethren. The Shamrock Friendly
Association, an Irish aid group comprised of prosperous Irish American citizens, published an informational pamphlet in
1816 entitled Hints to Emigrants from Europe. In it, they tell Irish immigrants that they may derive benefit from the counsel
and guidance of friends, and that if one has gone the road [they] are about to travel, by only showing [them] how it winds
beyond the next hill, (Shamrock Friendly Association 4) they would be better able to navigate their path in America
successfully. In addition to encouragement, the immigrants also received

  • 2. The Assigned Portrait By Anthony Van Dyck The assigned portrait is a work by Anthony van Dyck that dates back to 1621, presumably finished before the artist left his native city of Antwerp for Italy (Genua). From the title, we gather that Van Dyck is depicting a family of three. The father is sat on the right, while the mother is sat on the left; they are both facing the viewer. Their young child is positioned on the mother s lap, its head turned towards the father. The colour scheme includes rich, dark colours for the attire of the couple, a vibrant red colour for the drapery behind the mother and similar shades of dark green for the mother s skirt, the child s skirt and the velvet fabric on the furniture approximate to the child s skirt. Additionally, the inset of the mother s dress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bear little resemblance to other depictions of Wildens, whose satyr like characteristics and sharp glance are considered distinctive. However, the features of the father in our case study look oddly familiar. That is because they are much more similar to the characteristics of the father in the portrait The Family of Cornelis de Vos (1584/5 1651), also by Van Dyck. In addition to the facial features, Van Dyck diligently portrayed the fine lace ruff and sleeves of the man s attire and the tightly starched ruff of the woman (The State Hermitage Museum, Family Portrait ) in both portraits, pairing those with delicate hand gestures, present in both paintings. To boot, Van Dyck used the same landscape art as a background for the father s head and the same deep red coloured blinds behind the mother. The colour schemes and even the golden button details and the wooden handle on the furniture where the mother is sat are alike, too. Given these similarities (and the fact that de Vos painted a portrait of his own family during the same period), it might be possible that the family in the portrait is actually that of Cornelis de Vos. (Dickinson, Sir Anthony Van Dyck ) Since we know that Magdalena, the youngest daughter of de Vos was born in 1619, it is possible that the family portrait below was painted in 1620 and our case study was actually painted ... • 4. Genetic Engineering Is The Precision Of Gene Transfer As defined by Halford and Shewry (2000), genetic Modification is the manipulation of organism development, structure or composition by the insertion of specific DNA sequences. This may be for the purpose of expressing a gene that is not naturally found in the plant or to modify endogenous genes (Halford et al., 2000). In a way, we have been genetically modifying our food for thousands of years. Since the dawn of agriculture, our ancestors were selecting and breeding plants and livestock with the desired phenotypes, such as bigger cows or plants. One particular difference between conventional methods of obtaining better crop yields and modern genetic engineering is the precision of gene transfer. Getting a child plant with the desired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new DNA found in this genetic plant can be referred to as recombinant DNA. According to Hillis, Sadava, Hill and Price (2013), recombinant DNA is a single DNA molecule containing DNA sequences from 2 or more sources. History According to Woosley (2012), genetic engineering as we know it today relied on our knowledge of DNA. DNA was discovered by Russian scientist Andrei Nikolaevitch Belozersky in 1935. In 1973 a student at Stanford came up with revolutionizing idea that DNA could be man made (rDNA). In the 1970 s 80 s a conference was held to create guidelines for the safe use of genetically modified DNA and a genetics engineer gained a patent on a living organism, a bacterium that eats crude oil (Woosley, 2012). In 1982 the first GMO was approved by the FDA; Humulin, insulin which is produced by genetically engineered E. coli bacteria (Woosley, 2012). How GMOs Are Created In order to make a genetically engineered or transgenic organism, scientists must first find the desired trait, be it frost resistance or salinity tolerance, and identify an organism with this trait. Scientists then take a sample of the plant or organism and use genome mapping technology to find where the trait is located within the DNA. Restriction enzymes are used by scientists to cut the DNA into fragments that can then be manipulated in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The proposed system will have control of various appliances that are available in the home. It manages household loads according to their predefined priority and guarantees the total household power consumption below certain levels. The home energy management system will receive the demand response from the utility side. The goal of the system is to encourage the consumer to use less energy during peak hours or to move the time of energy use to off peak times such as nighttime and weekends. Thus the high peak to average ratio (PAR) of power will be avoided and also we adopt real time pricing. The utility company use real time dynamic pricing to coordinate demand responses to the benefit of the overall system. Hence for this purpose we need to measure the power consumed by the various appliances that are available in the home. Introduction Biometric technology provides several advantages over conventional security methods like pin, password, key, card etc. The Biometric system grants authentication by different physiological and behavioral traits of a person. Biometric systems are basically of two types based on the use of a biometric trait for identification and verification. The types of biometric system are Unimodal biometric system Multimodal biometric system The Unimodal system has an only single source of information for authorization of a valid user. The Character Of Naomi Nakane In Obasan, By Joy Kogawa Naomi is always the good, silent child who does what s expected of her, she takes whatever is given to her, for awhile without any complaints. In Joy Kogawa s novel, Obasan, the main character, Naomi Nakane, chronicles her life with distance, and it is through minor character like her brother, Stephen, and their actions that we see the depth and impact of Naomi s passive nature. At the start of the book, Naomi describes herself as being a part of her mother, like a branch to a tree. She often hides behind her mother and is completely silent. Stephen on the other hand, is the star child; musically gifted from birth. With [his] practice time each night (Kogawa 62) Naomi was constantly forced to listen to Stephen play his music, and as a child she would sit and watch him, but not just him, it would be her father and mother, too. • 9. How Social Class Affects Health All over the world status hierarchy and social class are a common concept of how well we live our lives, however they affect our lives more than we think. Social class can affect many things such as education, opportunities presented to us, economic factors, and even our health. Recently socioeconomic status effects on health has become a more popular topic of discussion but is nothing new to researchers. Research on socioeconomic inequalities in health in the UK has a long history. In the early part of the 20th century the British government introduced questions on occupation in the decennial census. This allowed researchers to examine health outcomes by social class. (Knott, Dr Laurence). Researchers have discovered social class can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social class is determined by many things such as status, culture, employment, background, and wealth, along with other factors. Being in a certain class affects your health and even the type of health care you receive. Males in a higher social class live on average 9 years longer than males in more deprived areas or lower social classes and are in good health for 85 percent of their lives compared to 70 percent (Knott, Dr Laurence..). I believe social class affects health because of things such as living conditions, lack of resources for health care and education, and that lower class people prefer and are fine with less healthy lifestyles. People in higher classes are usually very successful and motivated in most aspect of life while people in lower classes may not be. I don t think there is much we can do to resolve this problem as most of these problems are dependent on each person s life choices and not much will change if we cannot fix this problem. Why social class has such a big on health will always be a question and I dont think theres an exact answer for it. There are believed to be many reason why social class affects health. One of these reasons are the bad habits or addictions that are associated with the lower class. One of the biggest habits or addictions most commonly associated with the lower class is smoking. • 10. Allergy Model Of Addiction There are many models of addiction. It appears that addiction is still not totally understood by the establishment due to the different interactions including everything from family dynamics, genetics, economic availability of substances to brain chemistry, morality, and social interactions as well as other criteria. The following is a sample of four different models of addiction with some of the positives and negatives of each model. The allergy model was born from Dr. Silkworth s opinion explained to the founder of AA. As Freed quoted Johnson in HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON ADDICTION Wilson left Towns Hospital with a new perspective on alcoholism: He was physically sick, not morally weak as most Americans labeled alcoholics (Freed, 2012, p. 33). The positive side of the allergy model was that the explanation that Silkworth gave to Bill Wilson removed the shame of moral failure that blocked Wilson from recovery. AA has been the most effective alcoholic recovery program to date. If the allergy model perspective has helped other alcoholics gain freedom that could be construed as a positive thing. The allergy model is a bit lacking though; it doesn t explain the allergy and why people tend toward something they re allergic to. Furthermore, it s just based upon a Dr. s opinion and not any data that he had compiled. The syndrome model seems to cover all its bases with its definition which is one of its benefits. • 13. Bullying And Its Effects On The Workplace Bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in today s society. It is most commonly thought to be found in schools or online, but it is becoming increasing popular in the workplace. Organizations must establish anti bullying policies to stop this detrimental behavior. Targets of workplace bullying often suffer from a multitude of health problems such as depression and anxiety. In this paper, we will examine the reasons why bullying has become so common in the workplace, the damaging effects, and what can be done to help stop this behavior. Bullying should be considered as a problem for the entire organization, not just an issue for the target. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is repeated, health harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators (WBI, 2015). Bullying can come in many forms including abusive conduct that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating. Along with the verbal abuse, there can be sabotage, or work interference that impacts work performance. The WBI states that 35% of the workforce in the United States have been bullied. This equals 1 in 3 workers who have been victimized. As a result of this staggering statistic, organizations must address this problem. • 14. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Scientific Management Frederic Winslow Taylor (1865 1915) was an engineer and most importantly an innovator who affects the way many organizations function even today. In his time he introduced the term of scientific management which refers to a system where leaders are capable of managing and workers are able to execute the tasks given by the managers in the most efficient and productive way in a mass production environment with the basic element of job specialization (McKenna, 2012, p.7). According to Taylor, scientific management should include the selection of the best qualified people to work in a company, the incentives to work harder and as a result more efficient by awarding them with higher salaries as well as the authority given to the managers to control and evaluate the working process. Also, dealing with fatigue of labour force by implementing rest pauses. Taylor believed that in this way, managers and employees would be more interested in work and would try to maintain their high wages and as a consequence would be more productive (Bagad, 2008, p.20). Another drawback is that Taylor system can be described as an environment in which workforce is treated as a machine and not as individuals who can influence the production of the firm (Dutt, 2008, p.21).Finally, scientific management was largely criticized by the workers themselves due to the fact that the efficiency which has a central role in company s productivity lead to a decrease in demand for employees and made them insecure because there was a strong possibility to lose their jobs (Singla, 2009 2010, ... Improving Current System Of Police Reporting 5.5 Improvement to Current Situation According to five factors that have been proposed, we had suggested some recommendations to improve current system of police reporting in Malaysia which is the Police Reporting System (PRS) to ensure that the function of the PRS will definitely helped to record and transfer the report in a better and easier way. 5.5.1 Role As mentioned above, role is very important factor in police reporting in order to make the report, received statement from complainant, and most important thing is to transfer the report to another police officers. As a recommendation, police organization in Malaysia can organize or provide a training program for police personnel on duty at the enquiry office about the use and maintenance of the PRS so that they can write the report quickly and also they know the function for every single menu and button of the PRS. Plus, if the PRS are breakdown, the police personnel will know how to fix the problem. Thus, it wills not wasting time to wait for the technical team to fix the problem and also they no need to write the report manually in POL 55 and re type it once the PRS was fixed. Besides that, enquiry officer also are encourage to more than one language. For instance, if the complainant who come over to lodge a report does not know to speak Bahasa Malaysia, the enquiry officer are able to speak another language like English, Mandarin, Tamil or any language that easy to understand by the complainant. 5.5.2 ... The manager of the supplying division uses a cost based method to record revenues and does not have sufficient incentives to control costs. 2. This approach does not provide clear signals to division managers about the level of decentralization top management wants. 3. This approach tends to insulate managers from the frictions of the marketplace because costs, not market prices, affect the revenues of the supplying division. 4. It leads to problems in computing the taxable income of subunits located in different tax jurisdictions. 22 13 Disagree. Cost and price information are often useful starting points in the negotiation process. Costs, particularly variable costs of the selling division, serve as a floor below which the selling division would be unwilling to sell. Prices that the buying division would pay to purchase products from the outside market serves as a ceiling above which the buying division would be unwilling to buy. The whole state of Texas is simply not just considered individualistic, traditionalism, or moralism, it is considered all three. An individualist prefers privacy, is suspicious of public institutions, and is an independent contractor. This attitude ties into our low active government. Government is sought out to be at low cost and out of the way of its voters. Texas government is very limited, and has a legislature that meets biennially. In Britannica, laissez faire is the policy of minimum governmental interference in the economic affairs of individuals and society. Laissez faire is basically telling government to leave them alone. The whole concept is to keep minimum government interference in business. Moralism is all about the community and a commonwealth. They are suspicious of private institutions and interests. A carpenter has many tasks to do, this job will have things that may or may not fit me, and I have to have a plan to accomplish all of my goals. Carpenters work outside most of time, but every now and then they will work inside. They have to be able to tolerate some less than favorable conditions at times to get the job done. Popular culture, however, has a skewed perception of Machiavelli s own personal political ideals. Well used are those cruelties (if it is permitted to speak well of evil) that are carried out in a single stroke, done out of necessity to protect oneself, and are not continued but are instead converted into the greatest possible benefits for the subjects (Machiavelli, 106). He indicates that often times the prince, as a ruler of his people, cannot make the same choices that would be considered moral for a normal person. As a ruler, he must consider the good of all of the people, and in doing so must sometimes choose the route which on the surface appears to be immoral and evil, but will in theory create the most good for his people while also maintaining or bolstering the prince s power over the people. In spite of these statements, not all of his instructions are as unethical as his critics have made them out to be. Later, in Chapter IX, he states that a prince must have the friendship of the common people; otherwise he will have no support in times of adversity (109). It is out of pragmatism, and not morality, that he makes this assertion. The good will and well being of the people are conducive to maintaining order and may help preserve the prince s position of power. In early American history there was a lot of conflict between European powers, and the U.S. mostly for their interference in the American ways of life and constantly creating settlements on our land. As the two ships pass each, Ahab calls out to the other captain, asking him if he has seen Moby Dick: Ship ahoy! Have ye seen the White Whale? (Melville 195). The crewmembers of the Town Ho believe Radney s death was because of the direct command of God because of Radney s unjust acts. This opens up a whole new counterargument regarding fate versus free will. This topic was also touched upon in Chapter 47, The Mat Maker. By describing the act of Moby Dick to God, Melville reinforces the theme of fate: Everything happens in the accord of God or the will of the fates. Though the sailors seek for omens and indications of the future, the accept that they cannot alter their destiny. This acceptance leads some of them, like Ishmael and Stubb, to adopt a carefree and joyful attitude. Ahab, on the other hand, sets about the task of his fate with stern determination. The account of Radney and Steelkit reveal a simple theme: power is arbitrary. This story also reverberates fairy tales in which a good looking peasant or laborer protagonist defeats a nasty authority figure. In most cases, it turns out that the peasant is actually of noble birth, and the opponent is a fraud. This is grounded on the idea that attractiveness is associated with other positive attributes and vice versa. Towards the end of the chapter, Ishmael claims that he has seen and talked with Steelkilt since the death of Radney (Melville 214). At the conclusion of the Town Ho, Steelkilt lives happily ever after, which proves that Moby Dick is the avenger of injustice. Similar to the Albatross, the Town Ho gam is an essential omen in which the fate of the essential characters in the novel can be predicted. In addition, Melville utilizes this chapter to mock the spiritual institution in Lima, by having Ishmael request a priest and the bible at the conclusion of the account, to affirm that the Town Ho s story is ... It emphasizes how there is no set purpose in life, and the humans just merely exist in the world. A big idea behind existentialism is that existence precedes essence. After World War II, existentialism gained popularity in Europe with it appearing in many works of literature. In the film Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, the main characters of the film contemplate the meaning behind life throughout the movie, especially during their exchange about death in a box. Hamlet seems to think that dying ends all the suffering and heartache of living. Hamlet says, To die, to sleep / No more and by a sleep to say we end / The heartache (Shakespeare III, i, 68 70). To him, death is freedom. This is actually very similar to the existentialism, as they view death as nothingness and freedom. Furthermore, Hamlet fears death because of the uncertain. He says, But that the dread of something after death, / The undiscovered country from whose bourn / . . . Thus conscience does make cowards of us all (Shakespeare III, i, 86 87 and 91). The unknown scares Hamlet. This view is quite a departure from existentialism. Existentialists believe that death is nothingness not unknown like Hamlet. Moreover, in the end of Hamlet s speech, he mentions how a well thought out plan may be overthought causing the action not to happen. Hamlet seems to believe that one should act quickly and not overthink. This seems contrary to existentialism. Existentialists believe in freedom of choice; however, they believe that choices have a huge impact. Therefore, they should be well thought out and not carried out rashly. He was a priest and scientist who became famous for his work and studies on the inheritance patterns using pea plants. Gregor Mendel used pea plants known as Pisumsativum in his research where he developed two fundamental laws of genetics known today as the Law of segregation , and the Law of independent assortment (Hartl, 1992). The Chi Square ( ) test was used in this experiment to determine whether the statistical data supports or rejects the hypothesis. This design was helpful in making sure that the plants are receiving water constantly. Also, one piece of copper sulfate was addedinto the reservoir to avoid any algal growth. Two Styrofoam quads with four cells each were used for planting the seeds of Brassica Rapa. The main technique that can be discussed in the role of trying to understand the mind is Functional magnetic resonance imaging. This technique uses an MRI machine to measure brain activity by looking at changes in one s blood flow. Stern et al, 1996 carried out research into the parts of the brain crucial for encoding and storage of information in the long term memory store. Using fMRI, participants were monitored while performing a novel picture encoding task. Evidence was provided to show that the encoding of these pictures depends on how the ventral cortical regions and the hippocampal region interact. This highlights a link between the two which therefore creates a valid contribution to our understanding of the mind as it identifies the parts of the brain crucial for engaging in essential mental processes. On the other hand, although this link can be identified, the method used by cognitive neuroscientists cannot explain exactly how the hippocampal formation is crucial in the encoding of information in long term memory meaning that it cannot be explained as to why it is needed and what exactly would happen to the encoding process if damage to this formation was to occur. The Dangers of Foreign Immigration, an article written by Samuel Morse in 1835, exposits much of the anti immigrant sentiment prevalent in the 19th century. To the natives, the Irish were simply niggers turned inside out (Anonymous Satirism), who came to America as refugees from Ireland to deprive them of their wealth and prosperity. Unlike later generations, these early Irish Americans were not necessarily Catholic, and didn t always speak English, but rather Gaelic. By the time the second wave of Irish immigrants arrived in the mid 19th century, yet more differences existed between these two waves. Those immigrants who had arrived earlier were by now relatively more wealthy and established than their more recent counterparts.
