Essay On Flat Income Tax
The federal government will not replace the current tax bracket system with a flat income tax.
The idea of a graduated, or progressive, income tax is an idea that originates from Britain. Prime
Minister William Pitt implemented the first bracketed tax system in 1798 in order to pay for the
French Revolutionary War (parliament.uk).115 years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed the
Revenue act of 1913, establishing the first graduatedincome tax in the United States. (history.com)
This idea of a graduated income tax makes the income gap smaller, and helps to make sure that every
family is paying a fair amount. Low income families pay a lower percentage, and higher income
families pay a higher percentage. In 2017, married couples who make $0 ... Show more content on

Taxes could be set at a specific percentage or a specific dollar amount. This idea seems fair, with
everyone paying the same rate, but, in fact, it can be extremely detrimental to low income families.
Flat taxes are usually set in the neighborhood of 17 to 20%, meaning that lower income families, let s
say, families making $5,000 a year would pay 1,000 dollars leaving just 4,000 to pay for necessities.
On the other hand, wealthy families making 400,000 a year would pay 80,000 dollars, leaving 320,000
dollars for spending, significantly more than low income families. Additionally, this system has not
gone unproposed. It has been brought up four times in the last 30 years, the most recent of which in
2011 when several republican candidates embraced the flat tax, including Herman Cain with a 9% set
tax, and Rick Perry with a 20%. However, these proposals and others similar to them have yet to gain
traction in our government. No form of the flat tax has ever made it past the first stages of formation,
which means it is very likely that there will never be a successful plan.
With the flaws in a flat tax system, and the benefits of a graduated income tax, the United States
government will not institute a flat income

George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty Four
Who said Fiction was Fake?
Imagine a place where the government is feared and seen as the center of the universe. No one dares
to go against it because of the torture and punishments that can occur. Propaganda is everywhere, and
no one knows what is the truth and what is a lie. Not knowing if today will be your last. This may
seem like an insight to a fictional novel, but this is not the case, this is a reality for some people. Like
in the novel Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell, the North Korean government uses fear to
control their citizens, and supervises the type of media presented through technology. By running
everything through a totalitarian regime, no one has the power or courage to fight back (North Korea:
Government) (Cha 13).
What is a way to get even the most stubborn person to follow commands? Fear. Fear is an effective
method of control that is used in both the governments of Nineteen Eighty Four and North Korea.
Oceania, the country where the novel takes place, has telescreens that claim to be watching everyone
at all times (Orwell 5). You had to live did live, from habit that became instinct in assumption that
every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised (Orwell
5). This kind of knowledge scares Winston and the citizens into obeying what the government says,
since they don t want to do something that can give the government a reason to punish them. Even the
slightest infraction can get someone in trouble:

A comparison Study of Russia and Estonia
Human rights are a fundamental aspect of the lives of individuals. The atrocities committed
throughout history have prompt the formation of a variety of organizations that have encourage the
advancement and respect for the human rights of all individuals around the world. Despite a growing
human rights movement and awareness among individuals, many countries still continue to violate the
human rights of their citizens. There could be many reasons for this trend, but there are certain factors
that could indicate why some countries have higher levels of human rights violations than others.
Through the method of agreement, this paper will attempt to provide the factor that leads to the

866). Their rationality is based on the fact that democracy empowers the masses that are able to use
this power to fight back and prevent their government from abusing their human rights. Democracy
also makes it easier for citizens to report instances of state repression to the international community,
thus forcing abusive leaders to either stop the abuses or to renounce their power (Poe Tate, 1994, p.
855 866). In a semi democratic country like Russia, this empowerment of the masses has less strength
to significantly prevent state repression, and sometimes the ability to shed light on abuses is difficult
since mass media is practically controlled by the abusive government. Similarly, Davenport (1995)
argues that democratic governments are less likely to use repression when dealing with mass
demonstrations because their nature is to allow expressions of freedom by the citizenry, which they
are aware always comes with a level of domestic disorder. This awareness decreases the use of
violence against the citizens (p. 690 691). Since Russia is a semi democratic state, government respect
and awareness of citizens freedom in not yet well developed, so the government continues to react
violently and to use repression when dealing with mass demonstrations, as it was the nature of the pre
existing socialist government.

Sexual Education And Sex Education
The purpose of this paper is to explain the importance of sexual education and describe differences
and similarities in some of the research done on this topic. Having sexual education available to youth
is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the individuals.
Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of consequence that might
follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer routes when deciding to
become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with preventing unplanned
pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have sexual education programs
but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are occurring. One reason could be
because very few of these sexual education programs are attending to the traditional social norms
around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on the traditional social norms
because findings in previous studies have found those that hold traditional social beliefs around
gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health consequences. Adolescents should
be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education in order to eliminate negative sexual
health consequences. Researchers have found that individuals in sexual education programs that
address traditional social norms and the effects of these beliefs, are less likely to agree with
hegemonic masculinity

The health benefits of ginger are plentiful and it is often classed as a wonder spice with both medicinal
and culinary upsides. Over forty four hundred years ago, according to Rodale s Encyclopedia of Herbs
, Greek bakers made gingerbread from ginger that was imported from the Orient. In the sixteenth
century the Spanish were cultivating it. From Jamaica conquistadors brought it to the New World. In
1884 Great Britain was importing well over 5 million pounds of ginger root. The origin of ginger is
uncertain. It is believed to be native to southern China and India. It was then introduced into southern
Florida. It grows well in fertile, well drained and moist soil that can be partially shaded.

Conceptualization Of Slope
Before this adventure in slope, I know I have never said to anyone slope is the most basic rate of
change . Basic may not be the appropriate word, but slope is typically a student s first introduction to
rate of change and it is somewhat simple, since the slope is the constant rate of change for a linear
function. Where am I going with this you may wonder? Semester after semester I have introduced,
reviewed, and examined slope with students, but I may have also caused a disconnect in students
conceptualizations of slope. I never said, slope is the most basic rate of change . It was evident from
my interview with Lawson that he did not initially connect the slope in his algebra courses to the rate
of change in his calculus course. He

Police Law Enforcement Protection And Citizen s Civil...
In 1991, nearly 10% of all United States murders occurred in New York City (La Vorgna, 2012). The
United States civil liberties grant citizen s rights and freedoms as determined by the Constitution and
Bill of Rights. Every citizen has the right to walk their streets without being racially targeted by
police. They also have the right to roam these streets without being mugged or killed. Both are civil
liberties. Amidst times of racial and ethnic animosity, this country faces a problem between law
enforcement protection and citizen s civil liberties. Stop and frisk is a policing tactic where officers
stop, question, and frisk a civilian based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. Many argue the
New York Police Department s (NYPD) use of stop and frisk is an obvious violation of the
Constitution and is based on racial discrimination. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS)
has heard many controversial cases dealing with this exact problem. Cases such as Terry v. Ohio and
Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin s partial ruling of Floyd v. City of New York have greatly impacted
both law enforcement tactics and the meanings of certain civil liberties. An analysis of the United
States judicial history and the biased decisions of Judge Scheindlin shows the NYPD s use of stop and
frisk tactic is not only constitutionally reasonable, but a non discriminatory way of reducing crime.
During 1968, Terry v. Ohio established the legal precedence for stop and frisk. The fourth

Personal Narrative-Old White Houses
I didn t always live on Meadow Ridge Road. But I have always remembered living on it. From the
time I was born to the time I was a year old, my parents and three brothers lived on a road in the city. I
don t know the house I had spent my first year in, but I know the one I m in now. Back then, it was
just an old white house, with a siding that was no longer produced. The front porch was small, barely
enough room to stand on and only there so people could stand above the snow during winter. The
kitchen floors were wooden, with my father making my brother Lucas and I clean the floors with a
toothbrush as punishment. The living room floors always had some form of urine from our dog. But

The Effects Of Domestic Violence On Domestic Abuse
Susan Cisneros
English 1301
Lacina Taylor
2 December 2014
Stop The Abuse Underreported and underestimated, domestic abuse rips families apart every single
day. Domestic violence comes in mainly five different forms, physical, sexual, psychological,
emotional, and economic. This violence ruins families, demoralizes the victims, and the public
downplays the household terrorism that goes on every day. Generally thought of as taboo, the public
belittles and humorizes domestic abuse as a way to deal with it, that avoidance must come to an end.
The five forms of domestic violence are economic, emotional, physical, psychological and sexual. The
most commonly known physical violence occurs when a partner or parent inflicts injury such as
hitting, stabbing, and shoving. Physical violence also takes place when food or fluids, medical care
and other sources that maintain health get withheld. The most commonly recognized form of sexual
violence is rape, or non consensual sexual intercourse. Sexual and physical violence oftentimes both
wind up reported by the same victim. Some individuals actively engage in sexually abusive lifestyles,
bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism, or BDSM is a wildly growing underground culture in
America. It focuses on dehumanizing the submissive partner and empowering the dominant one.
Certain pop culture books and films such as Fifty Shades of Grey have been giving this type of
lifestyle a veil and treating it like a glamorous relationship to be

Sports Influence On Canadian Identity
A nations identity is a way for all its common citizens to unite together, and for a country as young as
Canada, its identity is often not complete and is ever changing. Social trends and beliefs are constantly
evolving and therefore have an impact on how the rest of the world views Canada. However, sports
have been a staple in the Canadian identity for over 100 years, but even sports aren t impermeable to
changing times. Over the last 18 years there has been a steady decline in sport participation across all
age groups in Canada and to keep the soul of Canada intact it is important to keep funding the sports
industry because the growing disinterest in sports puts a main factor of the Canadian identity at risk.

One was heralded as the personification of what it means to be Canadian and the other as a villain who

hockey player of all time, born and raised in Canada. It was thought that through finding greatness in
him we can find greatness in ourselves (Jackson Ponic, 2001, p. 47), this shows how important he was

Historical Context Of Babylon Revisited
Knowing the historical context of a work is crucial to understanding both its general meaning and its
deeper essence. Often times, authors use their works as outlets to freely express their personal feelings
toward a social trend or issue. As such, the time in which a story is written can have a strong influence
on the message the author is trying to convey to his or her reader. Their personal reflections can be
asserted in many ways; among the most common being through the characters themselves and their
development throughout the work, the setting, and the implied themes.
An example of a work that is heavily influenced by the time period in which it was written is F. Scott
Fitzgerald s short story Babylon Revisited. Set in Paris during the 1920s, this work delineates the story
of a man named Charlie Wales who was at the pinnacle of his life when he succumbed to greed,
irresponsibility, and addiction. As a result of his carelessness, Wales experiences a tragic downfall. He
not only endures the death of his wife Helen, but he also loses his material fortune, his reputation, and
most importantly the custody of his daughter Honoria.
The time in which this story occurs the 1920s is vital to the plot. Dubbed The Roaring 20s, this period
is notorious for glamorizing lifestyles centered around materialism, gluttony, and self absorption. The
early 20th century brought about extreme social and political changes that influenced the lifestyles and
attitudes of the public.

Chlamydia Trachomatis
Introduction: Chlamydia Trachomatis is the organism responsible for diseases such as trachoma and
the STD Chlamydia. Chlamydia is the most common STD in the United States, with about 4 million
new cases diagnosed every year.
The Organism it s Life Cycle: Chlamydia are obligate intracellular parasites, and are among the
smallest living organisms. There are two stages in the life of Chlamydia: elementary bodies and
reticulate bodies. Another feature of Chlamydia is that they are unable to synthesize their own energy
(ATP) and are completely dependent on their host for energy. The organism is in the elementary stage
of its life when it encounters its host and is taken up by phagocytosis. It prevents the fusion of ... Show

Encounter, Diseases and Epidemiological Data: The most common way to get Chlamydia is through
sexual intercourse with an affected individual. Newborns may get infected by affected mothers during
childbirth. Typically, it causes pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which is a result of the
host s inflammatory response. Other diseases include ocular infections such as conjunctivitis and
blindness. Neonates are especially vulnerable to conjunctivitis and pneumonia if the mother is
infected. Trachoma is a disease that is caused by inflammation in the conjunctiva and subsequent
scarring of the cornea, which could lead to blindness.
A more serious disease called lymphogranuloma venereum (when Chlamydia cause lesions in the
genital mucosa and enter it) is also caused by Chlamydia, but it is not endemic in the developed world.
People with Gonorrhoea are susceptible to a chlamydial infection. Females aged 15 24 (USA) are
most susceptible to Chlamydia. Incidence rate and prevalence are highest among blacks.
Treatment: The most important form of treatment is prevention, which can be done by discouraging
multiple sexual partners, and possibly abstinence from sex for those who are known to be infected.
Other forms of prevention would include setting up information programs, especially in inner city
communities, where prevalence of Chlamydia is very high. Chlamydia is difficult to eradicate

new roots descend from its branches, pushing into the ground and forming new trunks. The roots grow
relentlessly; many of the ancient temples of Angkor have toppled as these roots have become
embedded in the cracks and crevices between their massive stones. A single tree might have dozens of

The French quickly usurped all but ceremonial powers from the monarch, Norodom. When he died in
1904, the French passed over his sons and handed the throne to his brother, Sisowath. Sisowath and
his son ruled until 1941, when Norodom Sihanouk was elevated to power. Sihanouk s coronation,
along with the Japanese occupation during the war, worked to reinforce a sentiment among
Cambodians that the region should be free from outside control. After World War II, Cambodians
sought independence, but France was reluctant to part with its colony. Cambodia was granted
independence within the French Union in 1949. But the French Indochinese War provided an
opportunity for Sihanouk to gain full military control of the country. In 1953, Cambodia managed to

Andrew Carnegie was a man of business. Born in Dunfermline, Scottland on November 25, 1835,
Carnegie emigrated to America with his family when the weaving business was unable to support

Introduction: By 2006, Whole Foods Market had evolved into the world s largest retail chain of

highly selective about what they sell, as well as being dedicated quality standards and core values.
Whole Food s stated mission statement was to promote vitality and well being for all individuals by

Whole Foods has already bought its largest competitor, Wild Oats, which has shown to be profitable.
By promoting organic foods Whole Foods can increase sales and attract new customers by introducing
them to the Whole Foods experience. Whole Foods would benefit not only by promoting itself but the
industry in general. In addition to promoting organic foods, they could enhance their brand image and
loyalty by continuing their community service efforts. If the industry continues to grow and they
continue to bring about brand awareness and loyalty, Whole Foods could strengthen its market share
and profitability. The key threats that Whole Foods faces include: local grocers increasing their
organic food options, the size of Whole Foods stores deterring customers, and the price of organic
foods. Local grocers could potentially take away from Whole Foods sales by stealing the customers
that want to get in and get out. If customers can get the organic foods they want at a smaller grocery
store, some customers may switch to them. This is where the size of Whole Foods stores becomes a
threat to themselves. If they continue to buy and build large stores they could potentially deter some of
their consumers to the smaller grocers in the area. Also what is a threat now is the high price of
organic foods. Consumers must pay a premium for these items because they cost more to produce.
Whole Foods must keep the customers

Conclusions reached by the G4+1 are not recognized as GAAP in any financial reporting jurisdiction.

Lessee Accounting Research: An Analysis of Three Decision Contexts
The members of G4+1 agree that the purpose of financial reporting is to provide information for
making economic decisions. Empirical research incorporates this view by identifying and estimating
linkages between accounting information and actions taken by decision makers. In my discussion of
research on lessee accounting, I decompose the research into three decision contexts financial
statement analysis of equity risk, financial statement analysis of equity value, and decisions/actions by
management.
Research Related to the Risk of the Lessee s Equity
Most empirical research on lessee accounting is based on financial statement analysis as the decision
context, with particular emphasis on how unrecorded lease commitments might affect assessments of
shareholder risk. Possible reasons for this emphasis are: 1. finance theory links debt like obligations to
risk;
2. unrecorded leases are large for some companies;
3
and
3. mandated disclosures facilitate estimation of the unrecorded obligations.
4
The finance literature linking shareholder risk to leverage includes Modigliani and
Miller (1958), Hamada (1969), Rubenstein (1973), Bowman (1979), and Christie (1982).

Stereotypes In The Big Bang Theory
Stereotypes in The Big Bang Theory Playing for Laughs
Television criticism and comedy analysis are not my strong suit. Nonetheless, the stereotyping
exhibited in the popular award winning TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory is hard to ignore. As
someone that will watch an occasional sitcom I like to believe I can enjoy the comedy and at the same
time recognize the stereotypes portrayed for what they are. The cast of characters in TBBT exhibits a
collage of stereotypes that were created and scripted to evoke laughter through the interplay of the
people and the stereotypes they embody. Key stereotypes depicted in the show include gender, social,
psychological, ethnic, and occupational. TBBT promotes or reinforces a variety of these stereotypes ...

Essay on Genetic Enhancement is Unethical
Picture a young couple in a waiting room looking through a catalogue together. This catalogue is a
little different from what you might expect. In this catalogue, specific traits for babies are being sold
to couples to help them create the perfect baby. This may seem like a bizarre scenario, but it may not
be too far off in the future. Designing babies using genetic enhancement is an issue that is gaining
more and more attention in the news. This controversial issue, once thought to be only possible in the
realm of science fiction, is causing people to discuss the moral issues surrounding genetic
enhancement and germ line engineering. Though genetic research can prove beneficial to learning
how to prevent hereditary diseases, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We now use a procedure known as germ line engineering. This branch of genetic engineering is
named for the type of cells it deals with. In the early embryonic stage, the unchanged cells develop
into either germ cells or somatic cells (CRG). The germ cells are what turn into the sperm and eggs,
and they also pass on hereditary characteristics. The somatic cells are the rest of the cells in the body
that make up the organs, muscles, etc. Even though both types of cells contain genes, only germ cells
pass their individual characteristics onto offspring (CRG). Any change performed with the sperm,
eggs or embryo is considered either germ cell or germ line genetic modification. And, since the
characteristics of germ cells are passed on to future generations, these modifications do not just affect
the individual organism. In fact these changes, over a certain time period, may become part of the
gene pool for good (CRG). These modifications include the removal of unwanted hereditary diseases
and the enhancement of genes associated with appearance, intelligence, and athletic ability.
Scientists at the Genetics and In Vitro Fertilization Institute in Virginia have already adapted a sperm
sorting system that was originally developed for breeding farm animals. This system offers patients

Essay On Pretzel
The first pretzel in the world was created by a monk in Italy around 610. Some say that a pretzel was
initially called a bracellae . Strips of dough are baked by the monk and he folded the strips into
crossed arms shape which looks like the posture of a child crossing his arms in prayer. Baked pretzels
were given to children who were able to memorize and recite the prayer correctly. However, there is
no documented evidence to prove that this story was real. The three holes of pretzel represent the Holy
Trinity which comes with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The twisted part of the pretzel brings the
meaning of good luck, prosperity and long life. It was quite surprising when we got the pretzel that we
have ordered. The size of the pretzel was big and the shape was formed almost perfectly. All of us
think that it worth the price since it is cheaper compared to other pretzels out there. The color of the
pretzel was golden brown and the surface was covered with the mixture of cinnamon and brown sugar.

The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By...
This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is similar
to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At every step it
stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is repeated until a
stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number of training
observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split and leaf node
class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the classifications made
by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the tree growing process. Additionally it can
also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network. It uses the network as an oracle
to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data points. This way it can make sure
that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made there are at least S_(min ) number of
data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number. Whenever we generate new data points at any
particular node, we have to make sure that they satisfy all the constraints from root to the current
node. One of the approach to distribute the data points over a network is to employ uniform
distribution, but Trepan takes into account the distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the
marginal distribution of data. If the data at the input is continuous then it

Special Considerations for Branch Office Deployments
Microsoft has identified a number of special considerations for deploying Active Directory in branch
office environments. The characteristics of a branch office environment include:
• A large number of physical locations that need to contain replicas of Active Directory data. • A
small number of users per location. • A hub and spoke network topology where many branch offices
rely on connectivity to a centralized hub site for communications to other parts of the organization. •
Slow network connectivity between the branch office locations and the hub site.
Because of the ramifications of these requirements, Microsoft has developed additional content
focused on deploying Active Directory in branch office environments. The Active Directory Branch
Office Planning Guide is available on line at

Charlie has difficulties making friends since his background does not allow him to be a social person.

The second reason is the death of his Aunt Helen (his favorite aunt). This event creates a negative
impact on Charlie s life. All these factors contribute to Charlie s shyness, but the real reason of his
introvert personality is due to his Aunt Helen. The author does not tell the reader, but one can come to
the conclusion that early in Charlie s life his aunt abuses him. He previously has suicidal attempts

Star Wars, the single most recognizable science fiction experience to the date, hides a substantial
amount of real life issues, and borrows a great deal from real life history. While feasting these senses,
a lot can be gained by analyzing the saga, specifically A New Hope and The Phantom Menace by
George Lucas. Ironic themes exist in the saga in the likes of an oppressive government, the horrid
results of such governments, a strong presence of theology all which demonstrates parallelism of real

War, murder, and neglect all chief contributors to this astounding death toll backed by the nefarious

annihilating countless lives, and shows a distasteful lack of morality. A simple theme here genocide
and utter disregard for human life, and the dangerous of such power in the wrong hands. Lucas plays
heavily on the audiences emotions with the destruction of the planet Aldaaran. The decision to destroy
the planet is made over a strategic demonstration of force and to leverage to get the Rebel princess,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Death Of Horatio Alger
Paul Krugman, author of The Death of Horatio Alger, evaluates the declining social mobility in
America. He proposes that the decline in social mobility is causing the rich to continue to get richer
and the poor to continue to get poorer. Krugman was inspired to discuss how this would result in the
shocking loss of the American Dream, after he read a Business Week article that made him fearful of
the considerable and drastic decline that would destroy the livelihood of many Americans. Krugman s
purpose was to make his audience; those of lower socioeconomic status, aware that the American
Dream they hoped to achieve would soon become extinct. He creates a fearful and negative tone, in
order to grab his audience s attention and inform them about the economic downfall. Krugman
strongly conveys his message not only through his harsh tone, but by appealing to pathos,
incorporating rhetorical questions that create a fearful mood, and appealing to logos to make a
credible and sound argument.
Throughout the article, Krugman attempts to grab the attention of his audience and help them become
mindful of how the limited movement between social classes will have an effect on their life. In order
to do so, he implements rhetorical questions that appeal to pathos and ethos, while displaying a
negative tone and fearful mood. Rhetorical questions are used throughout the article to introduce an
important idea and make the readers evaluate their current social status. For example, the author
creates a hypothetical situation about the rich wanting to seek more advancements, he then questions,
What would you do? (11) and follows this question with steps one could take to control the
government and receive more leverage over the poor community. This question and response
strengthened his argument because it appealed to the readers emotions about the ability the rich have
to further harm the poor. Krugman also proposes questions that appeal to his ethos. After stating the
steps one could take to close off as many routes to upward mobility as possible, (14) he asks, It all
sounds sort of familiar, doesn t it? (15). This question is meant to be unanswered but make the
audience reflect. If the audience did feel that the

Edward Larson s Work Summer For The Gods
Throughout United States history, Americans have always remain separated on certain issues. Edward
Larson s work Summer for the Gods exemplifies just how issues split the population. Larson uses the
Scopes Trial of 1925 to demonstrate to the rivalry between modernists and traditionalists in the early
20th century. Charles Dawson discovered fossilized human bones known as the Piltdown skull and
bridged a gap in history that seemed to confirm Darwin s theory of evolution. Darwin s account of
random variations, coupled with his survival of the fittest selection process, posed a critical problem
for many Christians who retained a teleological view of nature. (Larson, 17) This threat to Christian
spirituality sparked an anti evolution movement in an attempt to revoke the teachings of evolution in
public school systems. The Tennessee House of Representatives soon passed a statute making it illegal
for any public school official to teach any theory that rejected the divine creation of man as taught in
the Bible. The Scopes Trial would prove to be more than an argument between science and religion
and the removal of textbook content. It was individual rights versus the right of majority rule, freedom
of speech versus censorship, and evolution versus creationism. At the turn of the century,
traditionalists were making an effort to combat the teachings of evolution. The anti evolution
movement originated for many reasons. First, as a response to new scientific evidence that

The Heart of Concordia
What do we value? Where are our priorities? In whom do we put our trust? These are the questions
our lessons ask today. And these are the questions, we as Concordia Lutheran Church, have been
asking and continue to ask. Our scripture today, not only ask the questions, but answers them, too.
And we, as Concordia, can gain insight, excitement, and hope from the answers. My first few days
with you, I was not here in Superior, I was at Heartwood Conference Center and Retreat in Trego
attending the Fall Conference of our Northwest Synod of Wisconsin. I was able to meet many of the
pastors from our synod. Thank you for giving me that opportunity. Our main speaker for the
conference was Bishop Dick Graham, the bishop for Washington D.C. As we talked about priorities
for congregations, synods, and our denomination, he focused on two Caring for the Poor and Making
Disciples. That s what we are to be about as a church. And that s exactly what our lessons for today
talk about. Our Old Testament Text from Amos speaks judgment against those not caring for the poor.
Not caring for the poor is not something new. As we read the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament),
we constantly hear God calling the Israelites to care for the poor and judgment when they do not.

Cultural Revolution Mao
A revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall
Evaluate the accuracy of this statement in relation to the causes of the Chinese cultural revolution
A revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall. This statement by Che
Guevara suggests that in order for a revolution to occur, the leaders must not hesitate, but rather, they
should take immediate and effective actions. This quote is particularly accurate for the Chinese
Cultural Revolution, because the main leader of the Revolution Mao Zedong was able to manipulate
the public, thus enabling him to bring about a revolution. The Cultural Revolution occurred as a result
of the failures in the Great Leap Forward, and officially, Mao claimed that the goal of the Chinese
Cultural Revolution is to build a society surrounding the proletariats by bringing back revolutionary
spirit. However, it became increasingly clear that Mao s real intentions were rather personal, as he
used the Cultural Revolution to re establish his power as the Chairman of the Communist Party of
China.
The Cultural Revolution was Mao s response to the disasters of the Great Leap Forward, during which
at least 30 million Chinese people starved to death in the span of 5 years (Ben Walsh). In 1959, Mao
admitted that I also have an indirect share of the blame... I don t want other people to shirk their
responsibility. (Phillip Short). This suggests that even though Mao was aware that his

due to a recession and the Gulf War, demand for air travel dropped drastically, for this reason, fare
wars started and all the airlines incurred massive losses.
3,4 The Airline industry and the market The airline industry is large, specially in the United States,
mainly due to the Deregulation of the industry. In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Board was created to
control the growth of the air transportation industry. This board had the authority to control entry, exit,
prices and methods of competition. In the late 1970 this structure was found inefficient and in 1978
deregulation took place. Due to the deregulation of the industry competition intensified, prices
dropped, and the number of people travelling increased. Many new companies emerged and regional
airlines saw deregulation as an opportunity to expand. Due to the rise in competition, by 1986 mergers
started to take place and in 1987 64.8% of the market was controlled by the four largest airlines. The
demand for air travel is determined mainly by price, studies revealed that half of the leisure travellers
and on quarter of business travellers did not have a preference for a particular airline, which means
that prices determined the

Grecian Identity Essay
Greece has been a central pinnacle of continuous change. Change that has been influenced by
numerous cultures, such as the Minoan culture. The sum of these cultural influences developed a
variety of Grecian identities, as well as different interpretations of government. However, these
identities were not a unified, collective identity of the people itself. The Greeks were once known as
something else: Achaean, Dorian, Ionian, Mycenaean, Theban, Athenian, and so forth. The
government was not representative of its people. Shifts in power and authority beset the political
atmosphere of Greece. With time, however, the people of Greece began to strive toward a collective
identity. The political environment began to solidify toward a populist ... Show more content on

However, glory can be easily lost, hence Hector s reluctance to leave the battle.
Arête did not discriminate between ethnicities; it was a universal goal. The quest for arête indicated
the priorities of the military, specifically the individuals, during this time. It was more important to
achieve glory than it was to win the war (winning the war was also preferable to many individuals).
Also, the achievement of arête influenced social status. The greater the goal, the more well known and
powerful the individual was. Many times, arête was achieved by the aristoi, or wealthy nobleman. The
aristoi could afford armor and could easily participate in battles. Because of this advantage, the best
dominated the sociopolitical environment.
Written during the Iron Age (1150 750 BCE), The Iliad occurs within the Bronze Age (3000 1150
BCE). In its writing, Homer reveals the conduct of Grecian cities and settlements toward one another
during the Bronze Age. Throughout the plot of the poem, both the Achaeans and the Trojans receive
support from allies, regardless of the reason for their altercation. Agamemnon, king of Mycenae,
supports and aids his brother Menelaus in his battle against the Trojans. Others agree to support and to
fight with Menelaus as well, such as Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Concurrently, Hector, a prince of Troy
and brother of Paris, agrees to fight for Paris. In both occurrences, the belief of allies is strongly
supported. For the Achaeans, their

So What Analysis Miles Davis
So What Miles Davis Solo Analysis
Miles Davis solo is very minimalistic mainly using crotchet and quaver rhythms throughout with the
occasional triplet or semiquaver grace note. For the A sections of the first chorus he bases phrases
around the minor pentatonic scale. He develops his opening motif (bar 2 of A1) in bar 4 7 returning to
the root (E) in between each ascending then descending phrase going up to the 7th (D) in the final
variation of the motif. The phrase lengths are irregular; Davis generally uses shorter phrases in the E
minor Sections taking a vertical approach to the improvisation then uses longer phrases in the
contrasting F minor section where he takes a more horizontal approach. In A1 of the second chorus

Davis uses his opening phrase, an upbeat crotchet followed by another 3 crotchets, at the start of both
choruses and continues to use the 3 crotchet pattern throughout the solo for example bar 7 of A2 in
chorus 1. He also uses the pair of quavers starting or ending a phrase motif from So What throughout
this solo for example bar 7 of A1 chorus 1. From the start of this solo Davis makes use of the upper
extensions starting on the 9th (E) of the D minor chord. He tends to start the majority of phrases on the
4th of the chord being played at the time and also emphasises the 6th at the end of some phrases (bar
7, A1 in chorus 1) using the F# over an A minor chord. In general phrases last for about 2 bars
although the phrase lengths increase during the middle of the solo. One of the standout melodic
phrases is the partly chromatic semiquaver/triplet run in bar 7, A1 in the second chorus followed by
the repeated triplet pattern in the following bar. This phrase contrasts with the rest of the solo and adds
variation and excitement whilst moving the solo forwards. Davis uses triplet scalic/chromatic runs in
order to emphasise notes at the start of phrases for example, bar 8 of A1 in section 1 where the runs
leads to the G which emphasises the use of the 11th over the D minor chord. Miles Davis also uses
ghost notes in this solo (bar 6 of A2 chorus) in order to vary the dynamic levels

Our Mutual Friend Theme Essay
The novel Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens explores the theme of turning dust into gold,
whether it be in a literal or metaphorical way. Old John Harmon, the Boffins, and Betty Higden all
turn dust into gold in some way. Old John Harmon changes dust into gold in a literal way he grew rich
as a Dust Contractor (p. 24). The dust with which he made his fortune was piled around his mansion,
when talking about Old John, Mortimer says that he collected all kinds of dust; coal dust, vegetable
dust, bone dust, crockery dust, rough dust, and sifted dust (p. 24). Old John does not use his physical
wealth and dust for good things, he instead keeps it for himself. The Boffins started out as servants to
Old John Harmon, and when the other John ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rosamond does not listen to Lydgate when he does not want her to ride the horse to avoid her
miscarriage. She does not empathize with the way that he feels worried for their baby and her. He says
that she should not ride because there is always a chance of accident (p. 361), to which she responds
with there is the chance of accident indoors (p. 361). She doesn t understand why she should not ride
the horse, and how this decision affects Lydgate. She also does not empathize with the way that
Lydgate feels about getting rid of their furniture. She wants to get her father to lend them some money,
but Lydgate does not want that because he says that it is too late to do that (p. 368). She does not
understand how asking for help makes Lydgate feel. Rosamond s attitude changes when Dorothea
comes to visit her and forgives her for what she did with Will. She was taken hold of by an emotion
stronger than her own (p.491), and becomes a much nicer, less self centered person. In the Finale, we
find that Rosamond remarries after Lydgate dies, and she and her children are well cared for by a new

Native Americans and Their Intrinsic Relationship with...
Dances With Wolves, directed by Kevin Costner, and The Searchers, directed by John Ford, looks into
the fabric of this country s past. The media has created a false image of the relationship between
Native Americans and White men to suppress the cruel and unfortunate reality. Both directors wanted
to contradict these stereotypes, but due to the time period the films were created, only one film was
successful. Unlike The Searchers, Dancing With Wolves presents a truly realistic representation of
Native Americans.
Both Dances With Wolves and The Searchers protagonists, Dunbar and Ethan, embark on a journey
and evolve in different ways. The purpose of Dunbar s journey is to find who he is. For Ethan, it is to
rescue his nieces who he feels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this depiction, the Native Americans lure the men away from their homes, savagely kill their
families, and commit wrong. It is the white men who have to painstakingly hunt down the Indians to
reinstate justice, righting the wrongs that have been done. Native Americans are depicted as a
demonizing form of the other, a force to which fear and repression can be the only responses. Costner
s work almost inverts this.
Both films critique White racism and violence. Dunbar is guilty of the Whites and realizes that they
are involved in a system where the Native culture, habitats, and populations are being destroyed. To
purge his overwhelming sense of guilt, he switches sides and fights against his old comrades. White
society is the demon while the Native Americans are apotheosized. In The Searchers, Ford presented
Ethan not as the hero but almost as a subtle villain, a racist that embarks on a fixated and zealous
mission that is fuelled by his hatred of Native Americans. Ford uses Ethan to depict the wrong actions
of Whites.
Kevin Costner and John Ford both use the Natives language in their films. The big difference is the
effort of the directors. Costner uses sub titles and actual Native language unlike Ford. Ford does not
use the proper language for the Comanche. In beginning of Dances With Wolves, there is not as much
dialogue between Dunbar and Natives, but the body language is significant along with other forms of
symbolic communication used to make the story

Working Memory and Its Benefits Essay
What makes our everyday life very simple? What helps us to know what is happening now, what we
are thinking now and what we are doing now? We are aware of the present moment or any changes in
this moment, and this ability helps us in functioning effectively to face immediate environmental
changes in our everyday life. This ability is called the Working Memory. The term working memory
was coined by Miller, Galanter, and Pribram in 1960 (Baddeley, 2003). It refers to the temporary
storage in the brain for manipulation of necessary information to execute cognitive tasks. According to
Baddeley and Hitch s study (1974), working memory comprises three main components, a control
system, the central executive and two storage systems, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During their study, these researchers found that blind participants performed higher than the sighted
control group in a number of auditory, tactile and olfactory tasks ranging from basic sensory up to
higher levels of cognitive tasks. According to a study by Muchnik, Efrati, Nemeth, Malin and
Hildesheimer (1991) found that blind participants outperformed sighted participants in auditory tasks.
Similar results were noted by Alary, Duquette, Goldstein, Elaine, Voss, Buissonniere Ariza and Lepore
(2009) for tactile tasks. Other researchers also found similar results for olfactory perceptual
discrimination (Cuevas, Plaza, Rombaux, Volder Renier, 2009), auditory localization (Lessard, Pare,
Lepore and Lassonde, 1998), speech perception (Muchnik et. al, 1991), temporal perception (Muchnik
et. al, 1991), voice processing (Klinge, Rӧder Büchel, 2010b) and short term (Bliss, Kujala
Hamalinen, 2004) long term memory tasks(Amedi, Raz, Pianka, Malach Zohary, 2003).
These researches were done to understand intramodal plasticity and intermodal plasticity. The
understanding of these modal will help in explaining how different neural mechanisms contribute to
behavioral compensation including changes within the intact modality systems and changes that cross
modality boundaries. For example, a study by Matteau, Kupers, Ricciardi, Pietrini and Ptito (2010)
observed that visual deprivation can lead to higher

Peaceful Resistance In Henry David Thoreau s Civil...
In a free society such as the United States, peaceful resistance usually comes in the form of peaceful
protests such as people marching in the streets or people staying put in a public area for symbolic
reasons. Peaceful resistance of this form is allowed because the government of this country seems to
support an ideal set forth in Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience: That government is best
which governs least. In other words, the role of government is to protect the individual freedoms of its
people, and the constitution that the United States government adheres to works to protect those
individual freedoms, including the freedom of speech. Therefore, peaceful resistance in the form of
peaceful protests are protected by the constitution. And even when peaceful protests cause individuals
to break laws, these actions can bear fruits of justice and advancement within society.
Henry David Thoreau is an example of the morality within peaceful protests. By not paying poll ...

Speakers such as Milo Yiannopoulos, Nathan Damigo, and Richard Spencer hold lectures and protests
in order to spread hateful and harassing messages within college campuses. Due to their actions,
people across the nation have joined their cause, thinking that it is okay to freely harass Muslims or
talk about policies that support one race. Furthermore, people have outlashed in protest against these
demonstrations of peaceful resistance, but unfortunately, this has provoked violence and hateful
messages being thrown on both sides. Quite opposite to the examples set forth by Thoreau, King,
Parks, or Gandhi, peaceful resistance can be a mode of spreading evil and destruction within

The Soldier In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried
One of the main characters in the short story The Things They Carried , written by Tim O Brien, is a
twenty four year old Lieutenant named Jimmy Cross. Jimmy is the assigned leader of his infantry unit
in the Vietnam War, but does not assume his role accordingly. Instead, he s constantly daydreaming,
along with obsessing, over his letters and gifts from Martha. Martha is a student at Mount Sebastian
College in New Jersey, Jimmy s home state. He believes that he is in love with Martha, although she
shows no signs of loving him. This obsession is a fantasy that he uses to escape from reality, as well
as, take his mind off of the war that surrounds him, in Vietnam. The rest of the men in his squad have
items that they carry too, as a way of connecting to their homes. The story depicts the soldiers by the
baggage that they carry, both mentally and physically. After the death of one of his troops, Ted
Lavender, Jimmy finally realizes that his actions have been detrimental to the squad as a whole. He
believes that if he would have been a better leader, that Ted Lavender would have never been shot and
killed. The physical and emotional baggage that Jimmy totes around with him, in Vietnam, is holding
him back from fulfilling his responsibilities as the First Lieutenant of his platoon. Jimmy has apparent
character traits that hold him back from being the leader that he needs to be, such as inexperience and
his lack of focus; but develops the most important character trait in the

Sweatshops In China
It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere
ignorance. Many people in the Western world either do not know or choose to ignore the fact that a
massive amount of products that come into North America from faraway lands are produced in
sweatshops, including shoes, clothing, and toys. This ignorance over the inhumane and unjust labour
conditions happening in factories on other sides of the globe is precisely what keeps these horrifying
practices alive. China is home to one of the most enormous and concentrated sweatshop systems in the
world. There are approximately 150 million people in China working in ghastly conditions, having to
live off nearly unsustainable pay, and being refused benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In present China, forced and unpaid prison labor is widespread and common. Characteristics of
Chinese sweatshops include overcrowding, lack of sanitary conditions, no worker breaks, demands to
complete a task within a limited period of time, and a total lack of job security. Government
negligence is what allows such abuses to persist. Some plants force employees into working
extraordinary amounts of hours, for example, a Price Waterhouse audit of Nike factories in China
found that some require seven days of work per week. Many workers who supposedly have the choice
to work overtime must do so in order to survive on their low wage rates. The people working in
Chinese sweatshops only get a small amount of payment for their work and nothing more. The locals
do not benefit at all, but instead suffer from the presence of foreign businesses in their country. As for
the foreigners, one telling statistic is that the United States imports an estimated $100 million per year
in goods produced by Chinese migrant workers. The outside companies gain millions as the
developing countries struggle to survive. Presently, foreigners gain massively from the resource of
migrant workers in China. The locals that can benefit from their presence benefit very, very little, that
is, if a small amount of money for their work is seen as a benefit. The Chinese employees work is
valuable to the company, for their

  • 4. Essay On Flat Income Tax The federal government will not replace the current tax bracket system with a flat income tax. The idea of a graduated, or progressive, income tax is an idea that originates from Britain. Prime Minister William Pitt implemented the first bracketed tax system in 1798 in order to pay for the French Revolutionary War (parliament.uk).115 years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Revenue act of 1913, establishing the first graduatedincome tax in the United States. (history.com) This idea of a graduated income tax makes the income gap smaller, and helps to make sure that every family is paying a fair amount. Low income families pay a lower percentage, and higher income families pay a higher percentage. In 2017, married couples who make $0 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taxes could be set at a specific percentage or a specific dollar amount. This idea seems fair, with everyone paying the same rate, but, in fact, it can be extremely detrimental to low income families. Flat taxes are usually set in the neighborhood of 17 to 20%, meaning that lower income families, let s say, families making $5,000 a year would pay 1,000 dollars leaving just 4,000 to pay for necessities. On the other hand, wealthy families making 400,000 a year would pay 80,000 dollars, leaving 320,000 dollars for spending, significantly more than low income families. Additionally, this system has not gone unproposed. It has been brought up four times in the last 30 years, the most recent of which in 2011 when several republican candidates embraced the flat tax, including Herman Cain with a 9% set tax, and Rick Perry with a 20%. However, these proposals and others similar to them have yet to gain traction in our government. No form of the flat tax has ever made it past the first stages of formation, which means it is very likely that there will never be a successful plan. With the flaws in a flat tax system, and the benefits of a graduated income tax, the United States government will not institute a flat income ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty Four Who said Fiction was Fake? Imagine a place where the government is feared and seen as the center of the universe. No one dares to go against it because of the torture and punishments that can occur. Propaganda is everywhere, and no one knows what is the truth and what is a lie. Not knowing if today will be your last. This may seem like an insight to a fictional novel, but this is not the case, this is a reality for some people. Like in the novel Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell, the North Korean government uses fear to control their citizens, and supervises the type of media presented through technology. By running everything through a totalitarian regime, no one has the power or courage to fight back (North Korea: Government) (Cha 13). What is a way to get even the most stubborn person to follow commands? Fear. Fear is an effective method of control that is used in both the governments of Nineteen Eighty Four and North Korea. Oceania, the country where the novel takes place, has telescreens that claim to be watching everyone at all times (Orwell 5). You had to live did live, from habit that became instinct in assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised (Orwell 5). This kind of knowledge scares Winston and the citizens into obeying what the government says, since they don t want to do something that can give the government a reason to punish them. Even the slightest infraction can get someone in trouble: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The atrocities committed throughout history have prompt the formation of a variety of organizations that have encourage the advancement and respect for the human rights of all individuals around the world. Despite a growing human rights movement and awareness among individuals, many countries still continue to violate the human rights of their citizens. Their rationality is based on the fact that democracy empowers the masses that are able to use this power to fight back and prevent their government from abusing their human rights. Democracy also makes it easier for citizens to report instances of state repression to the international community, thus forcing abusive leaders to either stop the abuses or to renounce their power (Poe Tate, 1994, p. 855 866). In a semi democratic country like Russia, this empowerment of the masses has less strength to significantly prevent state repression, and sometimes the ability to shed light on abuses is difficult since mass media is practically controlled by the abusive government. Similarly, Davenport (1995) argues that democratic governments are less likely to use repression when dealing with mass demonstrations because their nature is to allow expressions of freedom by the citizenry, which they are aware always comes with a level of domestic disorder. This awareness decreases the use of violence against the citizens (p. 690 691). Since Russia is a semi democratic state, government respect and awareness of citizens freedom in not yet well developed, so the government continues to react violently and to use repression when dealing with mass demonstrations, as it was the nature of the pre existing socialist government. ... • 7. Sexual Education And Sex Education The purpose of this paper is to explain the importance of sexual education and describe differences and similarities in some of the research done on this topic. Having sexual education available to youth is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the individuals. Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of consequence that might follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer routes when deciding to become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have sexual education programs but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are occurring. One reason could be because very few of these sexual education programs are attending to the traditional social norms around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on the traditional social norms because findings in previous studies have found those that hold traditional social beliefs around gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health consequences. Adolescents should be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education in order to eliminate negative sexual health consequences. Researchers have found that individuals in sexual education programs that address traditional social norms and the effects of these beliefs, are less likely to agree with hegemonic masculinity ... Semester after semester I have introduced, reviewed, and examined slope with students, but I may have also caused a disconnect in students conceptualizations of slope. • 10. Police Law Enforcement Protection And Citizen s Civil... In 1991, nearly 10% of all United States murders occurred in New York City (La Vorgna, 2012). The United States civil liberties grant citizen s rights and freedoms as determined by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Every citizen has the right to walk their streets without being racially targeted by police. They also have the right to roam these streets without being mugged or killed. Both are civil liberties. Amidst times of racial and ethnic animosity, this country faces a problem between law enforcement protection and citizen s civil liberties. Stop and frisk is a policing tactic where officers stop, question, and frisk a civilian based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. Many argue the New York Police Department s (NYPD) use of stop and frisk is an obvious violation of the Constitution and is based on racial discrimination. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has heard many controversial cases dealing with this exact problem. Cases such as Terry v. Ohio and Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin s partial ruling of Floyd v. City of New York have greatly impacted both law enforcement tactics and the meanings of certain civil liberties. An analysis of the United States judicial history and the biased decisions of Judge Scheindlin shows the NYPD s use of stop and frisk tactic is not only constitutionally reasonable, but a non discriminatory way of reducing crime. During 1968, Terry v. Ohio established the legal precedence for stop and frisk. The fourth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Effects Of Domestic Violence On Domestic Abuse Susan Cisneros English 1301 Lacina Taylor 2 December 2014 Stop The Abuse Underreported and underestimated, domestic abuse rips families apart every single day. Domestic violence comes in mainly five different forms, physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, and economic. This violence ruins families, demoralizes the victims, and the public downplays the household terrorism that goes on every day. Generally thought of as taboo, the public belittles and humorizes domestic abuse as a way to deal with it, that avoidance must come to an end. The five forms of domestic violence are economic, emotional, physical, psychological and sexual. The most commonly known physical violence occurs when a partner or parent inflicts injury such as hitting, stabbing, and shoving. Physical violence also takes place when food or fluids, medical care and other sources that maintain health get withheld. The most commonly recognized form of sexual violence is rape, or non consensual sexual intercourse. Sexual and physical violence oftentimes both wind up reported by the same victim. Some individuals actively engage in sexually abusive lifestyles, bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism, or BDSM is a wildly growing underground culture in America. • 14. Sports Influence On Canadian Identity A nations identity is a way for all its common citizens to unite together, and for a country as young as Canada, its identity is often not complete and is ever changing. Social trends and beliefs are constantly evolving and therefore have an impact on how the rest of the world views Canada. However, sports have been a staple in the Canadian identity for over 100 years, but even sports aren t impermeable to changing times. Over the last 18 years there has been a steady decline in sport participation across all age groups in Canada and to keep the soul of Canada intact it is important to keep funding the sports industry because the growing disinterest in sports puts a main factor of the Canadian identity at risk. One was heralded as the personification of what it means to be Canadian and the other as a villain who embarrassed Canada (Jackson Ponic, 2001). Both athletes were once dominant in their sport and their actions have affected the way Canadians view themselves. Wayne Gretzky is known as the greatest hockey player of all time, born and raised in Canada. It was thought that through finding greatness in him we can find greatness in ourselves (Jackson Ponic, 2001, p. 47), this shows how important he was to Canadians and how much the average Canadian looked up to him. However, when he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings and married an American actress, Canadians were outraged. They viewed it as another thing the Americans stole from us (Jackson Ponic, 2001, p. 49). The other side of the coin is the story of Ben Johnson, Ben Johnson wasn t a household name in Canada until he won the gold medal at the Olympic games in Seoul, South Korea. When he won, Canadians were heralding him as their own, as representing the multiculturalism that was present in Canada since he was not Canadian born but rather, Jamaican born (Jackson Ponic, 2001, p. 50). • 15. Historical Context Of Babylon Revisited Knowing the historical context of a work is crucial to understanding both its general meaning and its deeper essence. Often times, authors use their works as outlets to freely express their personal feelings toward a social trend or issue. As such, the time in which a story is written can have a strong influence on the message the author is trying to convey to his or her reader. Their personal reflections can be asserted in many ways; among the most common being through the characters themselves and their development throughout the work, the setting, and the implied themes. An example of a work that is heavily influenced by the time period in which it was written is F. Scott Fitzgerald s short story Babylon Revisited. Set in Paris during the 1920s, this work delineates the story of a man named Charlie Wales who was at the pinnacle of his life when he succumbed to greed, irresponsibility, and addiction. As a result of his carelessness, Wales experiences a tragic downfall. He not only endures the death of his wife Helen, but he also loses his material fortune, his reputation, and most importantly the custody of his daughter Honoria. The time in which this story occurs the 1920s is vital to the plot. Dubbed The Roaring 20s, this period is notorious for glamorizing lifestyles centered around materialism, gluttony, and self absorption. The early 20th century brought about extreme social and political changes that influenced the lifestyles and attitudes of the public. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Empirical research incorporates this view by identifying and estimating linkages between accounting information and actions taken by decision makers. In my discussion of research on lessee accounting, I decompose the research into three decision contexts financial statement analysis of equity risk, financial statement analysis of equity value, and decisions/actions by management. Research Related to the Risk of the Lessee s Equity Most empirical research on lessee accounting is based on financial statement analysis as the decision context, with particular emphasis on how unrecorded lease commitments might affect assessments of shareholder risk. Possible reasons for this emphasis are: 1. finance theory links debt like obligations to risk; 2. unrecorded leases are large for some companies; 3 and 3. mandated disclosures facilitate estimation of the unrecorded obligations. 4 The finance literature linking shareholder risk to leverage includes Modigliani and Miller (1958), Hamada (1969), Rubenstein (1973), Bowman (1979), and Christie (1982). 5 2 Prior to SFAS No. 13, guidance came from APB No. 5 (Accounting Principles Board 1964), ASR No. 147 (SEC 1973), and APB 31 (APB 1973). This branch of genetic engineering is named for the type of cells it deals with. In the early embryonic stage, the unchanged cells develop into either germ cells or somatic cells (CRG). The germ cells are what turn into the sperm and eggs, and they also pass on hereditary characteristics. The somatic cells are the rest of the cells in the body that make up the organs, muscles, etc. Even though both types of cells contain genes, only germ cells pass their individual characteristics onto offspring (CRG). Any change performed with the sperm, eggs or embryo is considered either germ cell or germ line genetic modification. And, since the characteristics of germ cells are passed on to future generations, these modifications do not just affect the individual organism. In fact these changes, over a certain time period, may become part of the gene pool for good (CRG). • 32. The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By... This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is similar to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At every step it stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is repeated until a stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number of training observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split and leaf node class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the classifications made by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the tree growing process. Additionally it can also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network. It uses the network as an oracle to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data points. This way it can make sure that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made there are at least S_(min ) number of data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number. Whenever we generate new data points at any particular node, we have to make sure that they satisfy all the constraints from root to the current node. One of the approach to distribute the data points over a network is to employ uniform distribution, but Trepan takes into account the distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the marginal distribution of data. • 37. Rhetorical Analysis Of Death Of Horatio Alger Paul Krugman, author of The Death of Horatio Alger, evaluates the declining social mobility in America. He proposes that the decline in social mobility is causing the rich to continue to get richer and the poor to continue to get poorer. Krugman was inspired to discuss how this would result in the shocking loss of the American Dream, after he read a Business Week article that made him fearful of the considerable and drastic decline that would destroy the livelihood of many Americans. Krugman s purpose was to make his audience; those of lower socioeconomic status, aware that the American Dream they hoped to achieve would soon become extinct. He creates a fearful and negative tone, in order to grab his audience s attention and inform them about the economic downfall. Krugman strongly conveys his message not only through his harsh tone, but by appealing to pathos, incorporating rhetorical questions that create a fearful mood, and appealing to logos to make a credible and sound argument. Throughout the article, Krugman attempts to grab the attention of his audience and help them become mindful of how the limited movement between social classes will have an effect on their life. In order to do so, he implements rhetorical questions that appeal to pathos and ethos, while displaying a negative tone and fearful mood. Rhetorical questions are used throughout the article to introduce an important idea and make the readers evaluate their current social status. For example, the author creates a hypothetical situation about the rich wanting to seek more advancements, he then questions, What would you do? (11) and follows this question with steps one could take to control the government and receive more leverage over the poor community. This question and response strengthened his argument because it appealed to the readers emotions about the ability the rich have to further harm the poor. Krugman also proposes questions that appeal to his ethos. After stating the steps one could take to close off as many routes to upward mobility as possible, (14) he asks, It all sounds sort of familiar, doesn t it? (15). This question is meant to be unanswered but make the audience reflect. If the audience did feel that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Edward Larson s Work Summer For The Gods Throughout United States history, Americans have always remain separated on certain issues. Edward Larson s work Summer for the Gods exemplifies just how issues split the population. Larson uses the Scopes Trial of 1925 to demonstrate to the rivalry between modernists and traditionalists in the early 20th century. Charles Dawson discovered fossilized human bones known as the Piltdown skull and bridged a gap in history that seemed to confirm Darwin s theory of evolution. Darwin s account of random variations, coupled with his survival of the fittest selection process, posed a critical problem for many Christians who retained a teleological view of nature. (Larson, 17) This threat to Christian spirituality sparked an anti evolution movement in an attempt to revoke the teachings of evolution in public school systems. The Tennessee House of Representatives soon passed a statute making it illegal for any public school official to teach any theory that rejected the divine creation of man as taught in the Bible. The Scopes Trial would prove to be more than an argument between science and religion and the removal of textbook content. It was individual rights versus the right of majority rule, freedom of speech versus censorship, and evolution versus creationism. At the turn of the century, traditionalists were making an effort to combat the teachings of evolution. The anti evolution movement originated for many reasons. First, as a response to new scientific evidence that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Heart of Concordia What do we value? Where are our priorities? In whom do we put our trust? These are the questions our lessons ask today. And these are the questions, we as Concordia Lutheran Church, have been asking and continue to ask. Our scripture today, not only ask the questions, but answers them, too. And we, as Concordia, can gain insight, excitement, and hope from the answers. My first few days with you, I was not here in Superior, I was at Heartwood Conference Center and Retreat in Trego attending the Fall Conference of our Northwest Synod of Wisconsin. I was able to meet many of the pastors from our synod. Thank you for giving me that opportunity. Our main speaker for the conference was Bishop Dick Graham, the bishop for Washington D.C. As we talked about priorities for congregations, synods, and our denomination, he focused on two Caring for the Poor and Making Disciples. That s what we are to be about as a church. And that s exactly what our lessons for today talk about. Our Old Testament Text from Amos speaks judgment against those not caring for the poor. Not caring for the poor is not something new. As we read the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament), we constantly hear God calling the Israelites to care for the poor and judgment when they do not. Overall, I think congregations and our ELCA do a pretty good job with caring for the poor. Yet there are always ways to do more and ways to change the system that often hurts ... • 41. Cultural Revolution Mao A revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall Evaluate the accuracy of this statement in relation to the causes of the Chinese cultural revolution A revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall. This statement by Che Guevara suggests that in order for a revolution to occur, the leaders must not hesitate, but rather, they should take immediate and effective actions. This quote is particularly accurate for the Chinese Cultural Revolution, because the main leader of the Revolution Mao Zedong was able to manipulate the public, thus enabling him to bring about a revolution. The Cultural Revolution occurred as a result of the failures in the Great Leap Forward, and officially, Mao claimed that the goal of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is to build a society surrounding the proletariats by bringing back revolutionary spirit. However, it became increasingly clear that Mao s real intentions were rather personal, as he used the Cultural Revolution to re establish his power as the Chairman of the Communist Party of China. The Cultural Revolution was Mao s response to the disasters of the Great Leap Forward, during which at least 30 million Chinese people starved to death in the span of 5 years (Ben Walsh). In 1959, Mao admitted that I also have an indirect share of the blame... I don t want other people to shirk their responsibility. (Phillip Short). This suggests that even though Mao was aware that his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Board was created to control the growth of the air transportation industry. This board had the authority to control entry, exit, prices and methods of competition. In the late 1970 this structure was found inefficient and in 1978 deregulation took place. Due to the deregulation of the industry competition intensified, prices dropped, and the number of people travelling increased. Many new companies emerged and regional airlines saw deregulation as an opportunity to expand. Due to the rise in competition, by 1986 mergers started to take place and in 1987 64.8% of the market was controlled by the four largest airlines. The sum of these cultural influences developed a variety of Grecian identities, as well as different interpretations of government. The Greeks were once known as something else: Achaean, Dorian, Ionian, Mycenaean, Theban, Athenian, and so forth. The government was not representative of its people. Arête did not discriminate between ethnicities; it was a universal goal. The quest for arête indicated the priorities of the military, specifically the individuals, during this time. It was more important to achieve glory than it was to win the war (winning the war was also preferable to many individuals). Also, the achievement of arête influenced social status. The greater the goal, the more well known and powerful the individual was. Many times, arête was achieved by the aristoi, or wealthy nobleman. The aristoi could afford armor and could easily participate in battles. Because of this advantage, the best dominated the sociopolitical environment. So What Analysis Miles Davis So What Miles Davis Solo Analysis Miles Davis solo is very minimalistic mainly using crotchet and quaver rhythms throughout with the occasional triplet or semiquaver grace note. For the A sections of the first chorus he bases phrases around the minor pentatonic scale. He develops his opening motif (bar 2 of A1) in bar 4 7 returning to the root (E) in between each ascending then descending phrase going up to the 7th (D) in the final variation of the motif. The phrase lengths are irregular; Davis generally uses shorter phrases in the E minor Sections taking a vertical approach to the improvisation then uses longer phrases in the contrasting F minor section where he takes a more horizontal approach. Davis uses his opening phrase, an upbeat crotchet followed by another 3 crotchets, at the start of both choruses and continues to use the 3 crotchet pattern throughout the solo for example bar 7 of A2 in chorus 1. He also uses the pair of quavers starting or ending a phrase motif from So What throughout this solo for example bar 7 of A1 chorus 1. From the start of this solo Davis makes use of the upper extensions starting on the 9th (E) of the D minor chord. He tends to start the majority of phrases on the 4th of the chord being played at the time and also emphasises the 6th at the end of some phrases (bar 7, A1 in chorus 1) using the F# over an A minor chord. In general phrases last for about 2 bars although the phrase lengths increase during the middle of the solo. One of the standout melodic phrases is the partly chromatic semiquaver/triplet run in bar 7, A1 in the second chorus followed by the repeated triplet pattern in the following bar. This phrase contrasts with the rest of the solo and adds variation and excitement whilst moving the solo forwards. Davis uses triplet scalic/chromatic runs in order to emphasise notes at the start of phrases for example, bar 8 of A1 in section 1 where the runs leads to the G which emphasises the use of the 11th over the D minor chord. Dances With Wolves, directed by Kevin Costner, and The Searchers, directed by John Ford, looks into the fabric of this country s past. The media has created a false image of the relationship between Native Americans and White men to suppress the cruel and unfortunate reality. Both directors wanted to contradict these stereotypes, but due to the time period the films were created, only one film was successful. Unlike The Searchers, Dancing With Wolves presents a truly realistic representation of Native Americans. In this depiction, the Native Americans lure the men away from their homes, savagely kill their families, and commit wrong. It is the white men who have to painstakingly hunt down the Indians to reinstate justice, righting the wrongs that have been done. Native Americans are depicted as a demonizing form of the other, a force to which fear and repression can be the only responses. Costner s work almost inverts this. Both films critique White racism and violence. Dunbar is guilty of the Whites and realizes that they are involved in a system where the Native culture, habitats, and populations are being destroyed. To purge his overwhelming sense of guilt, he switches sides and fights against his old comrades. White society is the demon while the Native Americans are apotheosized. In The Searchers, Ford presented Ethan not as the hero but almost as a subtle villain, a racist that embarks on a fixated and zealous mission that is fuelled by his hatred of Native Americans. Ford uses Ethan to depict the wrong actions of Whites. Kevin Costner and John Ford both use the Natives language in their films. The big difference is the effort of the directors. Costner uses sub titles and actual Native language unlike Ford. Ford does not use the proper language for the Comanche.
