What do you prefer characters values to
be?
In my survey I asked the main questions to 20
people; these were all from my target audience
which I decided before hand so I could make
my project towards them. the first question
revealed that people wanted Zombies over
Mutants or Alien parasite's. the second
question showed that mindless hoards were
the best type of 'zombie'; this means that they
wanted walking dead style creatures instead of
more human like creatures. the wanted values
of the character to revolve around family which
worked well with the concept I already plan to
do. the twist in the story has to have clues
through out that hints towards the twist; rather
than built up tension before the drop or a
sudden drop of the twist. the main issue is that
when marketing the project; people didn’t like
the idea of being deceived about the genera,
however revealing the genera spoils the twist
ending. This would be an problem I would
have to work around so the audience dint feel
cheated.

Secondary Research
Mindless hoard Zombies
• Corpses that are resurrected and crawl out of the grave.
• Mindless hoard zombies come from thriller movies with a
higher rating.
• these zombies are always the villains as they are not
thinking about anything but food.
Thinking hoard Zombies
• The origins of this type of zombie aren't well known and never
really explained inside the story
• They have ether internal or external monologues that are given
to the audience depending on the
• They can be villains, heroes and depending on their roll in the
film they can evolve over the course.
Intellectual zombies
• Humans who are infected, they are intellectual and generally are don’t
travel around in groups; preferring try blending in.
• These are generally main characters that we see grow in personality
and character.
• They are generally in comedy, adventure style movies and TV shows
with teen audiences.

Contingency Planning
Possible Problem Effect on Production Solution/Control Person Responsible
SD card corrupting
Most, if not all, produced
footage will be lost and need
re-shooting.
Format the card beforehand to prevent
corruption and loss of footage
Responsibility for formatting the card is on
Sydney Pooleman.
Not enough Camera
Battery
Causes production to be
postponed as this will render
the cameras in-operational
Have a backup battery for a quick change over
during filming
If not checked beforehand then it is Sydney
Pooleman’s fault, however if batteries die and
were not provided with charger then fault is not
to be placed on them.
Faults with the Tripod
Causes uneven videos and
or makes the video
Check the tripod before taking the equipment
out of the college vicinity.
Sydney Pooleman job to check the tripod
before taking it out
The Crew are unreliable or
slacking on the day of
filming
Slows filming down and can
possibly stop it altogether
Inform the crew that they are not to do
anything that will slow down the filming
process
Have people who you trust to be your crew.
Sydney Pooleman is responsible for making
sure they understand and they are responsible
for the way they conduct themselves
The Cast becoming
unavailable or changing
their minds to close to
filming
Slows production and
potentially cost a day of
filming if a replacement isn’t
found
Make sure people are available with enough
time for them to make them self’s free if
needed
Have a backup for what can be done if there
are problems
Their job to inform Sydney Pooleman with
enough time to find a replacement, Sydney
Pooleman to find a replacement as there
should already be a backup for if things go
wrong.
Filming on private property
Without permission there is
the problem of not being able
to shoot there.
Arrange to shoot there before the date to
prevent any time clashes or arriving and being
denied access.
It is Sydney Pooleman responsibility to get the
permissions and the owner’s responsibility to
make sure it is available at the time and date
stated.
Running out of time to film
Sections can be missing and
or not good enough because
they were rushed
Make a schedule and be sure to stay as close
to it as possible.
Sydney Pooleman needs to be able to control
when everything is being filmed, the cast need
to be able to listen to me and work effectively

Editing Process
Family First
Act 1 Editing
• Act 1 starts with the opening of a door and the main
character walking to reach the kitchen, this meant
editing together the footage to show the movement. In
the first few moments of the Act we get two shots of the
same open door from the floor angle, this repeats
throughout until act 3; the reason for doing this is to
bring attention to the room as a key place in the story,
latter finding out it is where Leah is kept.
• The next section of Act 1 is the feeding of Tess in which
we see Abbie put food through a doggy door; originally
there were lines in which Abbie would call out to tell
Tess it was breakfast; however is decided against using
sound effects and instead used music, there for the line
was cut out as ‘un-important’ in the grand scheme of
things. The sequence also includes an after effect shot
of Tess passing by the window at the same time as
Abbie, overall its hard to catch without knowing its there
however the light changes in the background do attract
the attention of the viewer even though they don’t know
why.
• Over all I believe Act 1 when well the sequence showed
what it needed from getting up to leaving the house,
there were no inconsistencies between shots and it was
clear what was going on; however my decision about
the talking I am still not sure is right.

Act 2 Editing
• The leaving section of this was hard to film as
I couldn’t go off the drive as I was a learner
alone and had to remove the L plates for
filming; however when editing it together I
removed the leaving section to cut to back
inside the house, the idea originally was to put
banging noises here to show that Abbie wasn't
alone in the house, this changed when the
decision about sound came.
• Returning there are issues, for example to get
the car backing into the drive through the
glass I had to drive close to the house and this
is clear when watching some of the footage
back of getting out the car. However it does
work and I'm happy with the result.
• The cooking scene had to be re-edited after a
stupid error on my part where I forgot to check
the contingency of the section and it resulted
in there being to many in-corrections between
each jump cut.

Act 3 Editing
• Act 3 is where all the twists happen with the first reveal
of the little girl (Tess) we see that this isn't just a story
about a happy life; we see Abbie go up to her and look
out at her sister who turns violent with the arrival. This
is angled and cut to show that there is not recognition
within Tess for her family; long distant and close up
shots were cut together to show this, the main
reasoning besides dramatic effect were to do with
reflections of the camera and crew in the window.
• After we see Abbie go upstairs with food and again see
the low shot of the room we learn holds Leah. We see
Abbie walk in before it cuts to Leah who is behind the
Marked danger line; while filming this was used to
divide up the room, shots of Abbie would be taken on
one side and shots of Leah would be on the other. The
practicality of this is to stop any incidents in which the
two sisters would be seen together but couldn't be as
they were played by the same person.
• I did look into editing it so we saw the back of one girl
and faced the other and a wide angle of them sat
opposite however they looked wrong as lighting was
changing at a different rate in each frame and masking
out the empty section of the room without cutting
sections out the back of the actor didn't work well.

added in close colour with the eye footage and then puppeteer to move slightly with the eye
movements. This layer was then changed to black and white. The galaxy layer for the eye was
then masked over the eye and made to only become visible after the eye closes and re-opens;
finally the logo title was added to become visible along with this layer.
Polkadot Stories The dots were set out and their opacity changed to zero; the blocks were then moved over
each and the dot became visible while the box was over it. The title was made to become viable
after the boxes pass over at the same time and then leave sight of the screen. The background
was added after all this.
Opening credits Each new written title was planned to come on one section at a time with the main section; as
one section faded out another replaced it by fading in. the background would continually zoom
in and as it did it would lighten and become more white to then fade into the next section which
was the opening of Act 1.
Kitchen walk by The timings were wrong on the footage, so I masked out the section I wanted of ‘Tess’ walking
past the window; the footage I masked was then brightened and blurred to make it less obvious
of what was going on. The section of Abbie walking around the corner was then placed behind
the mask so they fit together and it had Abbie and Tess walk in frame at the same time.
Closing credits The closing credits was done in the same way as the opening credits only the background’s
change was slower than before.

Screen shot of all music
Opening Credits Act 1 Act 2 Act 3 End Credits
Sound Track Purpose
Opening credits: This section
included the Logo’s sound effects
and only the opening sequence; its
upbeat as the story seams to be an
up beat story about family and
starting off this was is a way to
start the story off without tipping
the audience off.
Act 1: This acts music is more positive
and up beat to stick to the openings
style of ‘everything is okay’ doing this
was a way to make the whole thing
seam positive as a story. However the
music somber out some after Abbie
leaves the house and we hear her try
getting through to Leah who we later
find out will never answer.
Act 2: The somber mood of the end of Act 1
lifts a little when Abbie returns to the house;
however it doesn't get back the truly upbeat
feeling of the opening credits. During this
time we get music of during the cooing
which faded into more tense tones as we
see Tess for the first time the little ‘girl’
trapped outside.
Act 3: Act 3 is where we truly hear the tone drop as it starts with
the downbeat and tense ones brought on by seeing Tess in the
back garden and then escalates when we see Abbie feeding a
infected Leah; the downbeat tones clash with the casual actions of
Abbie who we see truly views her actions as normal, the tone
becoming more somber as the scene goes on; the music fading
out into the next section in which we get close ups of all 3 sisters
and that then changes into the credits with the same music.
End credits: This is truly
downbeat tones fallowing the
ending of Act 3 and a huge
contrast to the opening to
symbolize that appearances are
not what the seam as the tone
shift between the 2 different credit
sequences is so drastic.

Pre-Planning and Legal Aspects
I had a detailed mind map that had more than enough information to kick start my project;
this included all the later expanded aspects. One aspect I believe I got correct is my target
audience, however it is rather vague and I would have rather had a more accurate
demographic. Though my mind map was detailed it was only a mind map about the project I
chose only and didn't show how I got to the decision to do this project; next time I would do
more mind maps to get a broader prospective. Next time I do a project I would also do mood
and concept boards to get a better view point.
With my target audience it would have been better to have looked at more similar movies to
get a closer or more accurate demographic. With my research I got the most important
questions asked in my Primary research; this was good because I managed to get a good
idea of the best plan to cater more to the audience. In my Secondary research I looked into
the type of zombies that there are; I saw this as important since 2 of my 3 visual cast were
zombies. Though my research was good but in my Primary research I should have asked
more questions, that are still important, so that it was more detailed results to analyse to get
more information on what was wanted. However with my Secondary research I should have
looked into specific movies to match the type of creature to similar movies.
With my contacts I had the names, rolls and contact numbers which was a good starting
point however the call time and dates should have been better. The contracts I wrote up were
good, structured and covered all the need areas well enough; I had a law student look at
them and they agreed that though not perfect they covered what was needed. My contracts
were good however there are still some holes and while asking the Law student I was told
that there are ways to improve, such as adding the adult section of the child contracts, and I
did adjust them but they weren't perfect.
Practical and Visual Planning
I kept to my budget and came up with the appropriate projections on what was going to be
spent; I was also keeping track of what was spent while I was updating any additional costs I
spent throughout. With my time management I had a clear plan of what had to be done and
when; however I should have filled every day even if it was a small task. Next time I would
push to achieve goals on time as I didn't always and sometimes I fell behind.
With my resources I knew what I needed and the specific type of each kind of equipment,
along with the most convenient way to get them. If however, I were to do it again I would
have listed any other possible external sources to get the equipment; another idea on how to
improve would be to list the prices of each option, what I picked and why I chose it. I knew
possible constraints with all the main aspects of my film however I should have had a list of
ways to combat any of the issues I faced should they arise.
With my locations I detailed the locations address, its suitability and its practicality; it was a
good plan and well sorted. However the listing of any pit falls of the location should have
been separated from the practicality.
My structural breakdown was a good plan on what was going to happen and in what order.
To improve next time I would add more details on the finger things would have given a better
idea of what needs to happen. With my story board I knew what section each panel belonged
in and knew many angles I planned to use; although a bigger, more detailed version would
have made the plan easier to mark out a shot list and then edit my short film.
My shot list had the angles, positions and details needed for the filming days; there could be
some more details on the requirements of each shot to make it easier on the day of filming.
Production
When I was done filming I filled in my footage log, the set up of my footage log is
well done with the exact location shown, however in the future I would make an
extra column which had the length of the footage; this would give a better idea of
the amount of the footage I used. The footage usage log, from both the individual
Act and the complete log, were completed and detailed; however there was only
space for using the same footage twice so in the future I should add more
columns.
I believe that my editing went well; by dividing my film into different Acts it meant
that I could see sections better. Nonetheless I should have had more footage,
even if its just the same scene and angle, done to have more options on the
footage I could use to improve the final film. My list of after effects of what I wanted
and what I did were good and detailed; I managed to do what I wanted to make my
short film more visually appealing.
I loved my soundtrack especially the opening however the middle section could
have been better as it drops in atmosphere; and is a little out of touch with the rest
of the music. Overall my choice to remove the background sounds can be an issue
with the fact that I couldn’t drop as many hints to the twist as I would have liked;
despite this decision I did use two audio files, which were expositional. The rest of
the background and talking files were discarded in the end.

In my survey I asked the main questions to 20 people; these were all from my target audience which I decided before hand so I could make my project towards them. the first question revealed that people wanted Zombies over Mutants or Alien parasite's. the second question showed that mindless hoards were the best type of 'zombie'; this means that they wanted walking dead style creatures instead of more human like creatures. the wanted values of the character to revolve around family which worked well with the concept I already plan to do. the twist in the story has to have clues through out that hints towards the twist; rather than built up tension before the drop or a sudden drop of the twist. the main issue is that when marketing the project; people didn’t like the idea of being deceived about the genera, however revealing the genera spoils the twist ending. This would be an problem I would have to work around so the audience dint feel cheated. 0 5 10 Clues througout that hint at the twist Dropped straight out of the blue Build up tention until the twist is trown into their face How would you prefer a twist to be revealed? • 15. Contingency Planning Possible Problem Effect on Production Solution/Control Person Responsible SD card corrupting Most, if not all, produced footage will be lost and need re-shooting. Format the card beforehand to prevent corruption and loss of footage Responsibility for formatting the card is on Sydney Pooleman. Not enough Camera Battery Causes production to be postponed as this will render the cameras in-operational Have a backup battery for a quick change over during filming If not checked beforehand then it is Sydney Pooleman’s fault, however if batteries die and were not provided with charger then fault is not to be placed on them. Faults with the Tripod Causes uneven videos and or makes the video Check the tripod before taking the equipment out of the college vicinity. Sydney Pooleman job to check the tripod before taking it out The Crew are unreliable or slacking on the day of filming Slows filming down and can possibly stop it altogether Inform the crew that they are not to do anything that will slow down the filming process Have people who you trust to be your crew. Sydney Pooleman is responsible for making sure they understand and they are responsible for the way they conduct themselves The Cast becoming unavailable or changing their minds to close to filming Slows production and potentially cost a day of filming if a replacement isn’t found Make sure people are available with enough time for them to make them self’s free if needed Have a backup for what can be done if there are problems Their job to inform Sydney Pooleman with enough time to find a replacement, Sydney Pooleman to find a replacement as there should already be a backup for if things go wrong. Filming on private property Without permission there is the problem of not being able to shoot there. Arrange to shoot there before the date to prevent any time clashes or arriving and being denied access. It is Sydney Pooleman responsibility to get the permissions and the owner’s responsibility to make sure it is available at the time and date stated. Running out of time to film Sections can be missing and or not good enough because they were rushed Make a schedule and be sure to stay as close to it as possible. Sydney Pooleman needs to be able to control when everything is being filmed, the cast need to be able to listen to me and work effectively

  • 32. Act 1 Editing • Act 1 starts with the opening of a door and the main character walking to reach the kitchen, this meant editing together the footage to show the movement. In the first few moments of the Act we get two shots of the same open door from the floor angle, this repeats throughout until act 3; the reason for doing this is to bring attention to the room as a key place in the story, latter finding out it is where Leah is kept. • The next section of Act 1 is the feeding of Tess in which we see Abbie put food through a doggy door; originally there were lines in which Abbie would call out to tell Tess it was breakfast; however is decided against using sound effects and instead used music, there for the line was cut out as ‘un-important’ in the grand scheme of things. The sequence also includes an after effect shot of Tess passing by the window at the same time as Abbie, overall its hard to catch without knowing its there however the light changes in the background do attract the attention of the viewer even though they don’t know why. • Over all I believe Act 1 when well the sequence showed what it needed from getting up to leaving the house, there were no inconsistencies between shots and it was clear what was going on; however my decision about the talking I am still not sure is right.

  • 34. Act 2 Editing • The leaving section of this was hard to film as I couldn’t go off the drive as I was a learner alone and had to remove the L plates for filming; however when editing it together I removed the leaving section to cut to back inside the house, the idea originally was to put banging noises here to show that Abbie wasn't alone in the house, this changed when the decision about sound came. • Returning there are issues, for example to get the car backing into the drive through the glass I had to drive close to the house and this is clear when watching some of the footage back of getting out the car. However it does work and I'm happy with the result. • The cooking scene had to be re-edited after a stupid error on my part where I forgot to check the contingency of the section and it resulted in there being to many in-corrections between each jump cut.

  • 36. Act 3 Editing • Act 3 is where all the twists happen with the first reveal of the little girl (Tess) we see that this isn't just a story about a happy life; we see Abbie go up to her and look out at her sister who turns violent with the arrival. This is angled and cut to show that there is not recognition within Tess for her family; long distant and close up shots were cut together to show this, the main reasoning besides dramatic effect were to do with reflections of the camera and crew in the window. • After we see Abbie go upstairs with food and again see the low shot of the room we learn holds Leah. We see Abbie walk in before it cuts to Leah who is behind the Marked danger line; while filming this was used to divide up the room, shots of Abbie would be taken on one side and shots of Leah would be on the other. The practicality of this is to stop any incidents in which the two sisters would be seen together but couldn't be as they were played by the same person. • I did look into editing it so we saw the back of one girl and faced the other and a wide angle of them sat opposite however they looked wrong as lighting was changing at a different rate in each frame and masking out the empty section of the room without cutting sections out the back of the actor didn't work well.

  • 38. After Effects Scene name Description of plan Blink Pictures Footage of an eye blinking was masked to remove the rest of the face, the background was added in close colour with the eye footage and then puppeteer to move slightly with the eye movements. This layer was then changed to black and white. The galaxy layer for the eye was then masked over the eye and made to only become visible after the eye closes and re-opens; finally the logo title was added to become visible along with this layer. Polkadot Stories The dots were set out and their opacity changed to zero; the blocks were then moved over each and the dot became visible while the box was over it. The title was made to become viable after the boxes pass over at the same time and then leave sight of the screen. The background was added after all this. Opening credits Each new written title was planned to come on one section at a time with the main section; as one section faded out another replaced it by fading in. the background would continually zoom in and as it did it would lighten and become more white to then fade into the next section which was the opening of Act 1. Kitchen walk by The timings were wrong on the footage, so I masked out the section I wanted of ‘Tess’ walking past the window; the footage I masked was then brightened and blurred to make it less obvious of what was going on. The section of Abbie walking around the corner was then placed behind the mask so they fit together and it had Abbie and Tess walk in frame at the same time. Closing credits The closing credits was done in the same way as the opening credits only the background’s change was slower than before.

  • 43. Sound Track Purpose Opening credits: This section included the Logo’s sound effects and only the opening sequence; its upbeat as the story seams to be an up beat story about family and starting off this was is a way to start the story off without tipping the audience off. Act 1: This acts music is more positive and up beat to stick to the openings style of ‘everything is okay’ doing this was a way to make the whole thing seam positive as a story. However the music somber out some after Abbie leaves the house and we hear her try getting through to Leah who we later find out will never answer. Act 2: The somber mood of the end of Act 1 lifts a little when Abbie returns to the house; however it doesn't get back the truly upbeat feeling of the opening credits. During this time we get music of during the cooing which faded into more tense tones as we see Tess for the first time the little ‘girl’ trapped outside. Act 3: Act 3 is where we truly hear the tone drop as it starts with the downbeat and tense ones brought on by seeing Tess in the back garden and then escalates when we see Abbie feeding a infected Leah; the downbeat tones clash with the casual actions of Abbie who we see truly views her actions as normal, the tone becoming more somber as the scene goes on; the music fading out into the next section in which we get close ups of all 3 sisters and that then changes into the credits with the same music. End credits: This is truly downbeat tones fallowing the ending of Act 3 and a huge contrast to the opening to symbolize that appearances are not what the seam as the tone shift between the 2 different credit sequences is so drastic. • 50. Pre-Planning and Legal Aspects I had a detailed mind map that had more than enough information to kick start my project; this included all the later expanded aspects. One aspect I believe I got correct is my target audience, however it is rather vague and I would have rather had a more accurate demographic. Though my mind map was detailed it was only a mind map about the project I chose only and didn't show how I got to the decision to do this project; next time I would do more mind maps to get a broader prospective. Next time I do a project I would also do mood and concept boards to get a better view point. With my target audience it would have been better to have looked at more similar movies to get a closer or more accurate demographic. With my research I got the most important questions asked in my Primary research; this was good because I managed to get a good idea of the best plan to cater more to the audience. In my Secondary research I looked into the type of zombies that there are; I saw this as important since 2 of my 3 visual cast were zombies. Though my research was good but in my Primary research I should have asked more questions, that are still important, so that it was more detailed results to analyse to get more information on what was wanted. However with my Secondary research I should have looked into specific movies to match the type of creature to similar movies. With my contacts I had the names, rolls and contact numbers which was a good starting point however the call time and dates should have been better. The contracts I wrote up were good, structured and covered all the need areas well enough; I had a law student look at them and they agreed that though not perfect they covered what was needed. My contracts were good however there are still some holes and while asking the Law student I was told that there are ways to improve, such as adding the adult section of the child contracts, and I did adjust them but they weren't perfect.
  • 51. Practical and Visual Planning I kept to my budget and came up with the appropriate projections on what was going to be spent; I was also keeping track of what was spent while I was updating any additional costs I spent throughout. With my time management I had a clear plan of what had to be done and when; however I should have filled every day even if it was a small task. Next time I would push to achieve goals on time as I didn't always and sometimes I fell behind. With my resources I knew what I needed and the specific type of each kind of equipment, along with the most convenient way to get them. If however, I were to do it again I would have listed any other possible external sources to get the equipment; another idea on how to improve would be to list the prices of each option, what I picked and why I chose it. I knew possible constraints with all the main aspects of my film however I should have had a list of ways to combat any of the issues I faced should they arise. With my locations I detailed the locations address, its suitability and its practicality; it was a good plan and well sorted. However the listing of any pit falls of the location should have been separated from the practicality. My structural breakdown was a good plan on what was going to happen and in what order. To improve next time I would add more details on the finger things would have given a better idea of what needs to happen. With my story board I knew what section each panel belonged in and knew many angles I planned to use; although a bigger, more detailed version would have made the plan easier to mark out a shot list and then edit my short film. My shot list had the angles, positions and details needed for the filming days; there could be some more details on the requirements of each shot to make it easier on the day of filming.
  • 52. Production When I was done filming I filled in my footage log, the set up of my footage log is well done with the exact location shown, however in the future I would make an extra column which had the length of the footage; this would give a better idea of the amount of the footage I used. The footage usage log, from both the individual Act and the complete log, were completed and detailed; however there was only space for using the same footage twice so in the future I should add more columns. I believe that my editing went well; by dividing my film into different Acts it meant that I could see sections better. Nonetheless I should have had more footage, even if its just the same scene and angle, done to have more options on the footage I could use to improve the final film. My list of after effects of what I wanted and what I did were good and detailed; I managed to do what I wanted to make my short film more visually appealing. I loved my soundtrack especially the opening however the middle section could have been better as it drops in atmosphere; and is a little out of touch with the rest of the music. Overall my choice to remove the background sounds can be an issue with the fact that I couldn’t drop as many hints to the twist as I would have liked; despite this decision I did use two audio files, which were expositional. The rest of the background and talking files were discarded in the end. Editing, Sound Track and Audio
