This document provides a proposal for a set of idents for a fictional youth TV channel called "The GRID". It outlines the content, purpose, and target audience of 17-21 year olds. It discusses the planning, production methods, and management of the project. Key elements include designing 3 game-based idents involving dots, blocks, and falling boxes. Animation and motion graphics will be used to composite the game footage over live action shots of a player on their phone. A budget and schedule are included to complete the idents by a deadline of December 22nd.
3. • Another channel aimed at
younger audiences is E4 which is
in association with Channel 4,
being their ‘hip’ channel with a
younger target audience a
• The target audience shows as the
channel mainly airs comedy based
shows: which have running jokes
and current references.
• Comedy central is a channel that
has a target audience that is close
to mine as well as showing
comedy based shows, however
this channel also shows a lot of
re-runs of older shows.
Looking into Others of the Same Style
E4 and Comedy Central
4. • My concept is to have a person playing
an old school video game, then as the
camera pulls out the logo appears
within the game and when then there
will be a screen in which the person
celebrates because they are winning or
beat their high score.
• This should fit in with the new
generations phone dependency and
using older phone games should relate
to the furthest/oldest end of my
audience range.

Content, Purpose and Audience
Content
• My aim it to make Idents for the fictional TV channel The Grid; this will comprise of
a 2D visual of the completed suite of Idents and a three dimensional, fully
animated Ident with original audio to accompany the actions in the Ident and a
backing noise if required.
Purpose
• Mainly used to reaffirm the channel a viewer is watching so in future they think of
that channel and go straight to it when starting up the TV, however as this is a
youth channel it still is required to be entertaining and appealing to them. The
Idents will be shown before a show starts and at the start of advert brakes.
Target audience
• My target audience is generally quite mixed aiming more at an age range than a
gender or social class; this means the gender is both Males and Females and are
probably in the middle class in the social hierarchy. The main element of the
channels audience is the age, which is predicted around 17 to 21 years of age.
6. Proposal Document
Delivery, Planning and Management
Medium of delivery and specifications
• My Idents will be broadcast in 1080i 50 as it is broadcast standard.
Importance of planning
• Planning is important as it gives clear standards for the production team to achieve
towards. Its important with Idents to do research as they are supposed to appeal to
the audience of a specific branding and are the face of said branding. Planning is
also important when the product is one sub-section of a larger brand.
Management and Roles
• I will manage my project by following my plans and keeping on top of my projects
different aspects and being prepared for the worst. Actors and camera people will
be required to help out however I will be directing doing most if not all the camera
work and will only require one other person who will just be a hand model and
have one reaction shot.
7. • This is my design for the youth channel logo 'The GRID Youth'.
• When animating the logo I will have it so that the blocks will animate to appear
separate times in rows based on the color. The words 'the' and 'grid' will come in as
full words but at separate times where as the letters in 'youth' will appear
separately.
• This was the target audiences favorite logo so this will be the one I use. It has color
but also doesn’t over power the audience.
Logo design
My chosen logo for the channel
8. • For this project I made all my own sounds and music
• I chose to have a different sound for the boxes dropping/ blocks moving into place/
filling a box; this was the sound below as it can be used for all 3 Idents to make
more of a link.
• I chose to have a separate Logo music which fit into the animation I did, this is the
sound below. However I will speed it up in post as then it is more in time with my
logo animation.
• I wanted something similar to the logo, so that it would easily blend into the other,
for my win screen. I chose to have this as my full win screen sound however it
doesn't’t mean that the whole thing will be used in my Ident.
• In the way of main music these were my 4 choices as to what my In-app music
would be; this would be played on repeat until the win screen shows. I chose the
3rd as it was my audiences favorite.
Sound design
Making sound choices
9. • I will use Motion tracking on the over the shoulder shot of the phone screen and
then add the game to the phone screen so that the game will appear on the screen.
• I will have the game Animated so that actions only happen when the screen of the
phone is tapped so the game appears to be reaction to the owner of the phone.
• As for the Logo I will have that animated like any other elements of the game (in
the lines and dots game it will fill in one set of players squares that they completed,
in the cane game it will swing in like the blocks, in the un un-block-me game it will
be the block that has to be released) this is so the logo looks like it belongs inside
of the game.
• At the end of the Ident there will be the logo of the TV channel animated on its
own as apposed to just being an element in the game. However there will still be
action behind this.
Production Method
Motion graphics and compositing techniques
10. • In this design the player draws lines
between the different dots to make
box’s
• I improved the design to have the
blue player’s box fill with the
channel logo while the green
players boxes fills with silhouette.
• I designed the win screen in classic
style with the upgrade of a ‘Next
Level’ button above the ‘Home’ and
‘Replay' buttons.
Designing the Suit
Ident 1
11. 1. Close up of screen that has the
player playing the game; the game
has just started and we see the
player add a few lines.
2. As game goes on it zooms out to
reveal its on a phone; there are
some boxes filled in at this point
and it appears that the player is
winning.
3. Win screen; after about 30 goes
the win screen comes up and says
the player is the winner.
4. Celebration; a reaction shot of the
player.
5. Logo; the logo comes on screen to
show the audience that it is this
channel.
Designing the Suit
Ident 1
12. • In this design the player moves
wooden textured blocks around so
that the blue/ logo block can be
moved to the exit, which is
highlighted red.
• I improved the design by replaces
simple blue block with a channel
logo block with texture box fill.
• I designed the level complete
screen with the same design as
Ident 1 but with a move counter.
Designing the Suit
Ident 2
13. 1. Close up of screen that has the
player playing the game; the game
has just started and we see the
player move a few blocks.
2. As game goes on it zooms out to
reveal its on a phone; there are
some more moves made and the
logo block is closer to the exit
point.
3. Level Completed screen; after the
player completes the level the
level completed screen comes on.
4. Celebration; a reaction shot of the
player.
5. Logo; the logo comes on screen to
show the audience that it is this
channel.
Designing the Suit
Ident 1
14. • In this design the player draws lines
between the different dots to make
box’s
• I improved the production process
by changing to a claw instead of a
hook as the animation was to hard
and fiddly and the animation looked
blocky.
• I designed the high score screen in
like the others but with out the
player icon and a score instead.
Designing the Suit
Ident 3
15. 1. Close up of screen that has the
player playing the game; the game
has just started and we see the
player start to drop boxes.
2. As game goes on it zooms out to
reveal its on a phone; there more
boxes at this point making the
tower taller.
3. High Score screen; after the logo
block is dropped the high score
screen comes on display.
4. Celebration; a reaction shot of the
player.
5. Logo; the logo comes on screen to
show the audience that it is this
channel.
Designing the Suit
Ident 1
16. • I have chosen to do Ident 3 as I believe it will be the easiest to film and produce
while also presenting enough of a challenge to keep me working on the projects
minor details; such as the back ground.
• My sequence for my Ident will be:
o Close up of screen that has the player playing the game; the game has just he first box is on
what appears to be the ground with another box in a crane above that drops when the
screen is tapped..
o As game goes on it zooms out to reveal its on a phone; after a few more boxes drop the
ground isn't in frame anymore and there are some things that move such as the birds,
clouds and leaves.
o High Score screen; this continues until after the logo block is dropped then one more drop
after that the high score screen comes on display.
o Celebration; jumps to a reaction shot of the player.
o Logo; the logo sequence comes on screen to show the audience that it is this channel.
• On the right is my sound board for my Ident; it has all the better choices for the
sounds that were chosen by the target audience.
Chosen to make
Final ident to produce
17. • My real budget is a total of £10 and
with my calculations it will only cost
£7 to make. This is because I have
most the things I need for free and
only have to pay for actors at each
and the card to make the green
screen on the phone.
• A hypothetical budget if this was for a
real TV channel is £2,000 and an
estimated £1,954, this would cover a
filming and editing studio for 8 days,
camera hire with he props and the
cast and crew.

18. Sound planning
Break down
• Blue box is the opening
music and ends when the
fist drop occurs and this
section only covers the
movement of the first box
before the game starts.
• Green box is the
logo music and
occurs at the end
of the main
animated section
and fades out
into the end logo.
• Red box is the drop points
this has the sound track but
an over sound that has the
second a box hits the tower
to add a more interactive
method.
19. Contingency plan
Possible problems
Possible Problem Effect on Production Solution/Control Person Responsible
SD card corrupting o Most, if not all, produced footage
will be lost and need re-shooting.
o Format the card beforehand to prevent
corruption and loss of footage
o Responsibility for formatting the card is on
Sydney Pooleman.
Not enough Camera
Battery
o Causes production to be
postponed as this will render the
cameras in-operational
o Have a backup battery for a quick change over
during filming
o If not checked beforehand then it is Sydney
Pooleman’s fault, however if batteries die and
were not provided with charger then fault is not
to be placed on them.
Faults with the Tripod o Causes uneven videos and o Check the tripod before taking the equipment
out of the college vicinity.
o
Faults with the Tripod o Causes uneven videos and or
makes the video
o Check the tripod before taking the equipment
out of the college vicinity.
o Sydney Pooleman’s job to check the tripod before
taking it out
The Crew are
unreliable or slacking
on the day of filming
o Slows filming down and can
possibly stop it altogether
o Inform the crew that they are not to do
anything that will slow down the filming
process
o Have people who you trust to be your crew.
o Sydney Pooleman is responsible for making sure
they understand and they are responsible for the
way they conduct themselves
The Cast becoming
unavailable or
changing their minds
to close to filming
o Slows production and potentially
cost a day of filming if a
replacement isn’t found
o Make sure people are available with enough
time for them to make them self’s free if
needed
o Have a backup for what can be done if there
are problems
o Their job to inform Sydney Pooleman with
enough time to find a replacement, Sydney
Pooleman to find a replacement- Sydney
Pooleman should also have a backup for if things
go wrong.
Filming on private
property
o Without permission there is the
problem of not being able to shoot
there.
o Arrange to shoot there before the date to
prevent any time clashes or arriving and being
denied access.
o It is Sydney Pooleman responsibility to get the
permissions and the owner’s responsibility to
make sure it is available at the time and date
stated.
Running out of time
to film
o Sections can be missing and or not
good enough because they were
rushed
o Make a schedule and be sure to stay as close
to it as possible
o Sydney Pooleman needs to be able to control
when everything is being filmed, the cast need to
be able to listen to me and work effectively
20. Production Schedule
Plan
Time/ Date Activity
1 Week
6th - 9th November
o The 6th up to the 9th will be used for Design the Ident set and decide on the final one to
make.
1 Week
13th - 17th November
o The 13th till the 17th is when week that I will be Creating assets and background of the
game.
2 Weeks
20th November –
1st December
o Animating the background and then, after the filming, the animation of the blocks in time
with the actor pressing the screen. This will take longer as it is around 26 blocks and each
has to be done correctly to avoid messing up the animation.
1 Day
22nd November
o On the 22nd I have Filming in the studio and will have to get my live action stuff done first.
1 Week
4th - 8th December
o Do the motion graphics and positioning onto the phone, live action.
1 Week
11th - 15th December
o Editing sound and joining the 2 sections together to finish the Ident.
1 Week
18th - 22nd December
o Any written work that needs finishing including the Production Log.
1 Day
22nd December
o Hand in ALL work for marking.
21. • Repeated the same drop sequence:
o Left, Center, Right, then Center landing at 0.5
second intervals.
o When screen is tapped the crane stops and then
the 2 sides open and the box takes 0.05 seconds
to hit the tower.
o During the box’s drop the next block fades in
amongst the claws that have closed during the
time it takes to fade in.
o Then it goes back to the top and continues to
move.
o Move down the block as the tower disappears
down the screen.
Production log
Methods of production
22. • Green screen the phone front to make
the app play appearing behind:
o I took the original image and add the key light
effect to remove the green area from the phone
screen.
o Then I added in the animation and moved It
around to keep central to the screen.
o Have the winner screen do the same but have the
opacity changed to appear at the end of the
sequence.
Production log
Methods of production
23. • Which software have you used and
how have you managed your files
o I have a broad file called Idents inside
that is 5 sub-folders called:
1. Design
2. Footage
3. Planning
4. Production
5. Screen shots
o Each one of them is divided into
sections such as the file types,
purpose, or subject matter.
o This layout is also done on the
desktop.
Production log
Software & file management
24. • I used different file types such as
o The assets used in animation
are PSD files that were able to
be layered and move each layer
in after effects.
o Footage is all MOV files, this
includes the animated
sequences and the after effect
sequences.
o The music was in M4A files as
they are my own exported from
garage band.
Production log
Software & file management
25. • My Ident is not as seamless as professional Idents which I obvious as
it is quite rough around the edges and has issues with the live action
shot elements.
• My ident is quite different from any current ident, as it hasn't got a
whole bunch of live action movement; compared to other Idents for
my audience the ident I made is more adolescent and reflects a more
millennial feeling.
• The background and lighting of the live action were off however with
time restrictions I couldn’t re-shoot them so I had to reduce the
exposure and just live with a white background; The animation and
motion tracking went well and turned out pretty good, which I
believe made up for the live action issues.

Fitness for purpose
26. Clearance and Permissions
Actor Contracts
• To make my Ident without legal issues I
have done the following things:
o Made own music not using pre-made/
existing sound on garage band.
o Filmed my own footage so that stock
footage so that I have the right to use it
however I need without issue.
o Made all assets myself so that there is no
copy right infringement.
o Had actors sigh a contract so that there is no
misunderstanding of the use of their image;
the full contract here:
