BEFORE
Split screen.
SAMMY is on the left side, in what appears to be a living
room however the photos are of her family. SAMMY is dressed
up nice in a floral dress, make up and hair done. Sammy wears
Glasses.
JOE is on the other side, in a field with large crowds seen
of into the background. JOE is dressed in shorts with a vest
top on with a cap and sun glasses, holding a beer.
SAMMY
(Angrily)
Why didn’t you tell me?
JOE
Tell you what?
SAMMY
(Angrily)
About spending the day with the boys,
I saw Toms post.
JOE
Right… the day.
Joe laughs awkwardly
SAMMY
(sternly)

JOE is quiet on his end, looking down and around sheepishly.

Joe. Where are you? You had better be
dressed and on your way here dinners
almost ready and you promised.
JOE
Yeah, about that…
We hear an exclamation of celebration followed by a chant in
the background.
JOE
Im not coming.
SAMMY
What?
JOE
I know its been planned for ages, but
I realised I didn’t want to spend a
weekend being nagged and berated by
your parents. Besides, your brother
doesn’t like me much and its his and
Jessica’s anniversary so why would
they want me there?
SAMMY
You know she’s called Melissa. And non
of that matters because you said you
would be here. You said you would come
to this weekend for me. Also Ian would
have liked you, if you hadn’t been a
dick the last time we saw him.

For the last time it was an accident.
SAMMY
I’m not saying it wasn’t but you could
have said sorry. Anyway thats not the
point. You said you would be here.
JOE
Look, baby. I’m sorry I lied but in
fairness you never even gave me a
choice. And you’re being really un-
reasonable about this. Im not coming,
I’m away with the Guys and I will be
back Sunday night.
SAMMY
Im not being un-reasonable you
promised my and now you’re going back
on your word, all to spend time with
your friends who you see every day. I
was really looking forward to spending
the weekend with the people I care
about, and that included you.
JOE

SAMMY

have to thing seriously on this. You
can say you can’t stand my family but
their not going anywhere.
JOE

SAMMY is on the left side, in a bed. SAMMY is dressed in pj’s
and missing her glasses, with her hair ruffled.
JOE is on the right side, in a field. JOE is dressed in
shorts with a vest top on and sun glasses. He is slumped down
and bleeding from his abdomen. Screaming can be heard on
Joe’s side.
SAMMY
What do you want Joe? It’s the middle
of the night, I was asleep.
JOE
I just…
JOE breaks of closing his eyes breathing deeply, its shaky.
JOE
I just wanted to tell you I’m sorry
SAMMY
Joe. Are you okay?
JOE
Yeah everything fine.
JOE
(whispering)
You’re going to be fine.

JOE

blown your weekend off, it meant
something to you and I should have
taken that into account.
SAMMY
Thank you… Joe are you sure you’re
okay?
Joe isn’t listening staring off into nowhere
JOE
I should have just apologised to Ian,
it was just my damn pride…
SAMMY
You still can, just apologise when you
get back. We’ll all go out and you can
apologise.
Joe takes a shaky breath
JOE
That sounds like a good plan. He can
bring Melissa.
SAMMY

Sammy shakily laughs
SAMMY
I told you… Hows your weekend going?
Joe scoffs
JOE
It actually kind of blows, I shouldn’t
have come…
SAMMY
Well, I’ll save the I told you so’s
for when I see you.
Joe smiles and closes his eyes.
SAMMY
I know there is something you’re not
telling me.
JOE
How was dinner? Your farther must have
been happy I wasn’t there.
Sammy smiles and laughs a little
SAMMY
Yeah, he wasn’t actually. He’s mad

Sammy lets out a breathy laugh
SAMMY
He says karma’s going to get you for
breaking that promise.
Joe chuckles, looking down at his stomach. He presses it
wincing a little.
JOE
I’ll be sure to let him know when it
does…
Joe closes his eyes
JOE
(Mutters)
Im so so sorry Sammy, you’re the best
thing to happen to me and I took
advantage of that. You deserve better.
SAMMY
I forgive you, just don’t do it again.
Don’t make promises you don’t intend
to keep.
JOE
Ill never make you another promise I
cant keep, don’t worry about that. I
love you.

JOE
Good bye Sammy.
Sammy smiles and then hangs up. Joe looks down and sighs
before pressing his hand to his stomach. We hear sirens in
the background.

VOICEMAIL
Split screen.
SAMMY is on the left side. Sammy is dressed in black hair up
and makeup done. We see a church behind her and can hear
people in the background.
The right side of the screen is black.
SAMMY
Hey Joe, I miss you. You would have
loved this, everyone is here just for
you.
Sammy gives a dry laugh
SAMMY
I never wanted you hurt, dad never
wanted you hurt.
SAMMY
God, couldn’t you have just told me
you were injured badly? I could
helped, well no I couldn’t, but I
could have comforted you.
Bells ring as Sammy wipes away tears
SAMMY
You may have ditched me that weekend
but you still looked out form me,
didn’t let me live on feeling bad
because our last words were a loving
goodbyes, they weren’t anger filled
bitterness. Thank you so much for
letting me say goodbye.
