1. How effective is the combination
of your main product and
ancillary texts?

3. Magazine Advert
• The image used on our magazine article has come straight from the music video.
• We decided to keep the font the same on the magazine article and the digipack.
The font was bold and simple, this allowed the audience to be drawn in by the
images on the magazine article.
• We had an image of the artist on the front, this follows Mulveys theory of the male
gaze were men are idolised by women, this attracts a specific target audience.
• We used the effect of black and white to connote the loneliness and sadness of
the main artist that his true love has left him.
• The artist is looking at himself in the mirror which shows us two different sides, we
can see the artist standing there himself and we see the reflection of the artist in
the mirror. This can connote that the artist only wants us to see a reflection of him
and not his true self. It also relates to the music video where the lyrics are
juxtaposed.
‘Don’t call me on the phone, I could talk with anyone’ and ‘I need you here I want
you now’
• The artist looks somewhat emotionless, however his posture and the way he has
placed his hand around his face almost seem like he is hiding from his true self or
that he is hiding from his emotions.
4. Magazine Advert
• I feel our magazine article was very effective because
we were able to establish the indie genre really well.
We have used a range of emotions and the use of an
image of the band member allows for a widened
audience. The font that was used is very standard and
doesn’t side with a specific gender, however, the image
we used slightly favours the girls as linked to Mulveys
theory.
• If we had better equipment and more time we would
have been able to have a clearer picture in the back
ground which could establish some emotions clearer.
5. Digipack – Front Cover
• For the front cover of our album/digipack we used an image from the music video and
manipulated it so that we had the main protagonist and singer of the band, Conor, in the
front of the screen in black and white and the foggy background we had was in colour.
• We decided to have Conor in the front of the album and in black and white because it added
more desire to him. It made him look extremely interesting and this helped establish the
male gaze. The male gaze is a theory by Mulvey who believes that male artists are made to
be desired by young impressionable girls. We have done this through making him look
emotional in a field.
• We decided to use a location such as the foggy field because it was very quirky and different.
It has lots of different connotations such as expressing different emotions like sadness and
confusion. The foggy location can also be seen as lurking shadows in the background which
links very well with our album title ‘Chasing Shadows’ and the lyrics in the song ‘Remedy’ of
‘shadows closing fears that I can’t tell’
• We positioned Conor in the field by himself which may leave the audience asking why we
have placed him there. Is he a shadow or is he really there? We have decided to let the
audience make up their mind individually as we feel there are a lot of connotations of why he
is alone in a field such as wanting to be isolated from the world, sadness and loneliness. This
is a theory by hall where the audience decodes things that the editors have encoded.

7. Digipack – Inside Left
• The inside left is the first time we get a real look
at the band members. This suggests that the
other band members are less important than
Conor who is seen as the front man of the group.
We have edited a light to shine over the top of
the group showing the importance of all
members. Having the band inside the cover and
not on the front allows people to buy it to get the
extra something when they do. This can make the
audience feel special and it may encourage them
to buy more albums in the future.
8. Digipack – Inside Right
• The inside right cover is a reflection of the band members
but in a silhouette style. This connotes a suggestion of alter
egos and seeing different sides of people.
• Having seen a different side of the band, we can link it to
the magazine article where we see two different sides of
Conor.
• The silhouette style of the band members make them look
more interesting. It makes them mysterious and wonder
why they don’t want to be seen.
• This links to the genre of indie because we can establish
that the band are different in the way they want to be seen
by their target audience and how they decide to entice new
listeners in.
9. Digipack – Back cover
• We have used a light to shine down over the titles of the
songs to match the theme of lighting up peoples world.
• The font has been established and stays the same
throughout both the digipack and the magazine article. This
allows the font to be fixed to the band and it may be
something that makes people recognise the band.
• The song titles are in a white colour to make them stand
out and be brighter then the rest of the page. This makes it
easier for people to read.
• The lamp post has helped in keeping to the interesting
theme of stillness. It also connotes leading the way or
lighting up peoples life.
