2. During the research and planning period of the course so far, I have recently
discovered that a digi-pack is the style/design of a DVD/CD case which promotes
the artist and the content. As Jamie T's song 'Emily's Heart' was released as part
of the album 'Kings and Queens', the album artwork (below) is representable for
all of the songs within it. For my Digipak however, I would like to aim for the
same style (still fitting with the hip-hop genre and including theme colours) but
perhaps make it more appropriate for the song. As the little boy is shown to draw
a picture, perhaps a child's handwriting or drawing would fit and give it
originality. When I am out filming this weekend, I hope to get some photographs
of my actor in which I can edit and possibly use for my Digipak.
Although Jamie T's material is
mainly hip-hop, i feel that some
of his work (Emily's Heart in
particular) is edging towards
the indie pop/rock genre. So I
have done a little more research
into the digipaks of these
groups.
3. Icame across this beauty, an album digipak released by the Gorillaz. I found this
digipak rather appealing, not only is it a different style to others (which
represents the Gorillaz as a band) but I also liked the idea of cartoon
drawings/artwork rather than photograph. The design is simple effective without
being too busy. Each member of the Gorillaz band is represented by a cartoon
caricature, so this digi-pak promotes the artist and creates a strong relationship
between them and the audience (Goodwin's Theory).
As Gorillaz are a hip-
hop/alternative band I would be
able to create my own digipak
following the design of this one.
This way, I am following codes
and conventions of the hip hop
genre (Jamie T's genre)
4. This is the self titled debut album by Eliza Doolittle, an indie pop artist with a young
teenage female target audience.
The image on the front of the CD is very busy and fun with a bright fluorescent colour
palette that appeals to a young target audience. The images are very entropic and
imaginative creating a fun, exciting artist image. The images make reference to Eliza as an
British artist with images of famous London landmarks like Big Ben. These are an
example of how the cover is creating a recognizable brand image brand image. The image
of Eliza is very entropic with her in size proportion with the buildings. This is presenting
her as important with a celebrity status that many record label demand in promotional
media products in order to create a memorable brand image. There is a lot of movement
on the front cover with Eliza's pose, the blue sky and clouds and the erupting volcano. The
collage of so many images creates a really exciting and intriguing CD cover which positive
tone would appeal to its young target audience. Continued:
5. The inside of the digipak shows a close up shot of Eliza on the front inside pane.
This close up is used to create a strong artist image and to build a relatable
relationship between the artist and the audience according to Goodwin's theory.
Inside the digipak the bright colours and fun tone has been continued creating a
continuous artist and album image. The CD design is very simplistic with the
artist and album name printed in a striking, feminine coloured font. The
repetition of the name is making the brand recognizable which is extremely
important as this is a debut album. The pink colour and simplistic, striking
design would really appeal to a young female audience.
6. Another example from the indie pop/rock genre would be Pumpkin soup by
singer and songwriter Kate Nash. I enjoyed this digipak front cover because of
the uniqueness and the childlike drawings.
I feel the picture theme
and colour schemes are
quite universal and they
can appeal to a wide range
of people (including those
who don't know Kate
Nash's work-like me),
including both genders.
I like the idea of having my
own go at drawing my own
album artwork in this sort
of style and perhaps
incorporating
graphics/editing my work
on the computer so there
are two different elements
involved; thus appealing to
a wider audience.
