2. Evaluation Overview
This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects.
When using this form it is good practice to:
• Use appropriate terminology.
• Stay concise and focus on key points.
• Evaluate and analyse your statements.
• Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made.
Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level.

3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The theme of my project was the MOD subculture. This included things like who
the mods were, what music they listened to, how they dressed and much more.
The thing that attracted me to it was the fact that I had been brought up around
the mod culture so naturally I have always had an interest in things like the music
and the fashion. Another thing that attracted me to it was the fact that it was a
topic which isn’t really known with younger people so I thought I could use this
project as a way to teach people about this subculture that is known globally.
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
The research that I undertook was simply looking at previous fanzines that had
been made in the past and trying to get an idea as to what styles they used to draw
in the audience and how they made it appeal to the MODS or people who were
interested in becoming one. I would say the research helped a lot as i had never
seen a fanzine about the mod culture, so it was interesting to see all the different
styles that had been created throughout the years.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• I developed and improved my ideas quite often throughout this project. I did this
because some of the ideas didn’t fit the style I was going for or simply because I
had seen something that looked a lot better and wanted to add it to my work
instead. However, some things I had never planned originally were added to my
work as I had seen them maybe looking at something else or just produced the
idea out of the blue.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
• The outcome of the project was to create a fanzine on any topic you
wanted. The outcome for my personal fanzine was not too bad. I
think If I had managed my time a lot better then It could have looked
a lot better. But overall it wasn’t too bad. Id say there were many
good things about the fanzine however to counter that there were
quite a few things that needed to be improved so in the future if I am
able to create another fanzine I will be sure to improve it massively
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• For this project I collaborated with my uncle to get some photos of his
scooter and some of him wearing his MOD outfits. Although I get
many photos, I only used a couple within my fanzine as the others
didn’t really fit into the style of how the fanzine was looking.
However, I had no contributors when it came to creating the final
fanzine.
10. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• I felt quite relieved when the project had finished as I was a bit
behind during the production which resulted in me handing the
project in a lot later than the original deadline so after I fully finished
it I felt relieved and ready to start the FMP project as that’s what I am
most looking forward to. The reason I felt relieved was because of the
pressure of attempting to hand it in as soon as possible which would
mean rushing the fanzine and not making it look as good as what it
could be.
11. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
12. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• A good point about the project was being able to create a fanzine based on whatever topic it was
that I had chosen. I learnt from choosing my own topic that I could’ve chosen a topic which more
people knew about as this would’ve helped when it came to collecting information.
• Another good thing about the project was that overall, it was something I had never created
before and it was a new experience, so I really enjoyed that side of it. What I learnt from this is
that there are many ways to create these fanzines so don’t just go for the typical style that
everyone else does when making them.
• The research part of the project I would say is a good point as it helped me discover other
fanzines that had been created in the past, not necessarily about the topic I chose but ones thar
wee like it so I would day I learnt many things when from that area as it opens you up to a whole
new world of different creative techniques.
13. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• A challenge I faced when it came to this project was trying to find somebody to interview about
the topic I had chosen, I wouldn’t say I responded to this challenge to well as I didn’t end up
incorporating and interview in my fanzine although I did try to get somebody to interview
however that didn’t work out as I had planned.
• Another challenge that I came across during the project was the time management. Again, I'm
not sure I responded to it to the best of my ability however I did manage to hand my work in a
little past the deadline but nevertheless it was still handed in which is better than no work at all. I
said in the previous year that I would like to improve my tie management when it came to
handing in projects on the deadline but unfortunately, I haven’t really improved on that.
• A third challenge I faced would have to be not being able to edit any work from home.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the editing software like adobe photoshop or premiere pro, so I
wasn’t able to do any work on that outside of college however to respond to this challenge I went
into college on a couple of my free days and did some work there aswell as using my scan in
sessions to do some more work.
14. What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• The negative points about the experience I would say have to be the
ability to not work on any of the final piece outside of college. This is
things like using the software to edit photos or create mockups just
general things like that. There isn’t much I could have done to improve
this point as earlier I mentioned that to tackle this problem, I went into
college on my days off and did some work there aswell as on my scan in
sessions I used that time to finish off any work. I perhaps could have
come into college a little bit more when I had free days but apart from
that there isn’t much else I can say.
15. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
• I would rate my final piece a satisfactory. My reasoning for this is
because as I missed the deadline the pressure was on to get it handed
in as soon as possible to during that time I rushed many things and
didn’t focus on creating a great piece it was more I wanted to hand it
in as quick as I could so that is the reasoning for giving it a
satisfactory.
16. What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
• Like I said in the previous slide I wasn’t too happy about my final
piece a I felt it was rushed instead of being thorough and creative I
thought only about handing it in as quick as possible. Some elements
I would say were successful were the photos I had taken although not
many of them were used in the final piece I am still glad I was able to
capture them as they could be used in something later down the line.
17. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
• Well the project was to create a fanzine which is a print based design
and that’s what I created however it wasn’t a print in was produced
online and published online so other that than that I would say it
applied to the characteristics and convention of the medium.
18. How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
• My design I would say sort of appealed to my target audience. The
reason I say it sort of is because I think it could have included more
things about the mods so basically more information was needed.
Other than that, I think it has a decent amount of information in it to
learn many new things.
19. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
20. In what ways was the overall project a
success?
• Well, I created a fanzine so I would say that is a success in its own
right. I captured many of my own photos which were used within the
fanzine. Each page had its own unique style that included information
and many pictures. All of these points I would say make the fanzine a
success seen as though I have actually made something so there is
evidence there of a fanzine being created.
21. What elements did not go well and why?
• I would say there is one element that did not go well, this was the fact
that the fanzine could have had a lot more pages and information
added to it. The reason for this is because it would have made the
fanzine a lot better to look at as more pages would equal more
visually pleasing images plus information. I could also add an element
which didn’t go well and that was the getting hold of someone to do
an interview with, I would say this factor let me down when it came
to creating the final piece.
22. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• I would say my skills developed on and off during the portfolio. The
reason I say they developed on and off is because some of the skills
were better improved than others. For example, the organization of
the first few areas in the project like the research and planning were
all kept up to date however the time management side sort of let me
down as I missed a couple of the deadlines for when those were
supposed to be handed in leading up to the start of the production
weeks. The communication side of things was I bit hit and miss I sort
of like to get things done on my own without asking for any help but
ive realised help is always good.
23. What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
• There wasn’t really any sort of meaning or message I was trying to
convey through my fanzine it was more to get people to learn about
these subcultures that originated in Britain and spread all around the
world. I would say a little message is that people dress to express how
thy feel about things they are interested in for example the mods
wore suits and parkas as that’s what they adopted and wanted to
stand out from their parents and everyone else, so really just don’t be
judging anyone for loving something.
24. What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
• I didn’t get any written feedback from anyone it was more just
showing them what I had created and asked their opinion on it
however thinking about it now it would have been useful for them to
have written it down so then in the future I can see all the opinions
people had and any faults or improvements I could act upon them.
25. What would you do differently in the future
and why?
• In the future the one thing I would do differently is potentially
choosing a subject in which it is more known as it is easier to find
information and more people just know about it which helps
massively when it comes to the production side as for this project, I
need someone to interview but seen as though the topic I chose
wasn’t to known and there was limited to do on it it made it hard to
find someone to interview. So yes in the future I would choose a
better topic.
26. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
27. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
• If I was to make a similar project in the future the thing, I would do
differently is choose a subject where there is plenty to talk about, lots
of information and facts about it on the internet and just generally a
topic that will draw viewers in straight away. Im not saying my fanzine
didn’t draw viewers in straight away but I would like to create
something that just has that extra to it.
28. What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
• Some personal attributes I could develop to ensure I am working at a
professional level is improving time management as when I am
working at a professional level, I cannot be handing things in late or
not completing certain tasks as that is not working in a professional
manner. Another thing is working on my organizational skills, I feel I
am organized most times however there are some days where I just
sack it off and can't really be bothered to work which then crates
work being left not completed so that is one of the things I would like
to improve on.
