This evaluation template guides students in evaluating their year two projects at L3 Creative Media Production & Technology. It prompts students to concisely discuss the aims, research, development, outcomes, responses to, and analyses of their projects. The template also encourages students to identify strengths, challenges, and areas for improvement to develop their skills for future projects.
2. Evaluation Overview
This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects.
When using this form it is good practice to:
• Use appropriate terminology.
• Stay concise and focus on key points.
• Evaluate and analyse your statements.
• Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made.
Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level.

3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The theme was uk rap and dance music, which is something I'm very
passionate about. I always feel endless enthousiasm when doing
projects on topics I'm interested in, so this enthousiasm was present
throughout. I also felt a fanzine went hand in hand with my topic, as
there is so much content online regarding it, I just had to gather it
together. I also wanted to make it sorrounding this topic as its
something ive been a part of for a while, and I really wanted
something visual that represents it.
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• I looked at firstly other fanzines, notably punk ones. I analysed them,
making notes regarding fonts, artwork, printing techniques and the
attitude of the writing. I then researched my topic, looking at existing
publications about it. I didn’t find any actual fanzines but there was
magazines and online articles etc. I gathered a collection of punk fanzines
and other products about my topic, and evaluated which teqniques would
be good for my project. Once I was confident on how I would format the
zine, I began visual element research. I looked at classic fanzine styles but
also the visual comventions of my topic. These were mostly graffiti fonts,
design elements like fire, diamonds and lightning. This research helped a
lot as I felt confident on how it would look before starting, and you can see
the similarities with my plan and final piece.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• I firstly intended to use certain design elements that in my final piece
I didn’t. One being a graphic at the bottom of each page. I planned to
make a city skyline with speakers and photos of flats intertwining, but
ended up using a line drawing of a skyline instead. This is because
after a few experiments, I just couldn’t find a way to make it look how
I invisioned. To develop it further, I added a stroke effect on
photoshop so it fit with my colour theme. I also planned to use things
like fire and lightning to fill in gaps, in production I decided to go for
bullet wholes instead as the use of fire and lightning was bringing too
many colours and it didn’t fit with the overall theme.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
• I made a 12 page fanzine, regarding uk rap & dance music. It covers
genres I like and describes what they are. It then delves into artists I
like who make these genres, and then lists and describes some songs
of these genres. I did a page called 'artist spotlight' where I covered
some artists I like with no specific genre. Also, I did a page dedicated
to one artist, which explained a lot about what they do and had
some quotes from them.
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• I was looking forward to producing this project as I had never done a
print project before, I usually do video. I also had an idea straight
away so I felt confident that I could just get straight on with it. I
wasn’t too confident with how my actual graphic design would turn
out as I havent done that much photoshop before. Overall I was
excited to do start this project, and I felt this way throughout it all.
10. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
11. Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• I contacted various musicians that I covered in my fanzine. I asked one
of them to provide me a few quotes that outline why they make
music, and what thier musics about. I also aksed some people for
photos that regard my fanzines topic, as I know some photographers
that attend events was talking about. I also checked with all the
producers of the music I covered if they were ok with me talking
about it and using the artwork etc.
12. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• Proud as I feel I achived my goals and possibly even exceeded them.
The final product actually means something to me as it’s about all my
friends and the achivements weve made over the years in one visual
format. I do feel that I could have developed every aspect more if I
had more time, but that’s not bothering me too much as it wasn’t
such a big project.
13. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
14. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• I liked that I could express myself via the project, and I learnt that
when making work about my passion, my enthousiasm is very high.
• I also liked how I could effectivley do whatever I want, it had to be a
fanzine but that’s quite broad. Things like the page content and the
overall design was all up to me. I think this gave me skills in
indipendance, as often in projects I have more instruction.
15. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• One challenge was the varied quality of images and graphics I used
within my fanzine. I used photos on every page and sometimes the
resolution and exposure etc. was different. Also, on the front cover I
pieced together various images to create one seamless one, this was
where the contrasting image qualities were most challenging. I
overcame this issue by formatting the pictures as best I could to make
them look similar, and applied a filter to them which made them look
seamless.
• I also struggled with some elements of graphic design, like boarders
for the pages and artistic details etc. I intended to make a graphic at
the bottom of each page, but I struggled so used an image off the
internet instead.
16. What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
17. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
18. What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
19. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
20. How did you design apeal to your target
audience?
21. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
24. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
25. What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
28. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
29. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
30. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
31. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
