A little bit more than Facebook & Twitter
How to use different social media platforms to locate,
engage and keep your audience

3. Why should you care?
• Social media provides an easy way…
– to provide content in multiple formats on multiple platforms
– for your target audience to consume content at their own pace, in the
way that best suits them
– to influence them through peer pressure and advocacy
• Usually free, at worst low cost
• Easily measured
• Easy to use (!?)

6. #1: Find your audience
• The easy bit:
– Current fans & followers
– Existing database
• The harder bit – finding new people
– Finding influencers & advocates
– Social advertising using LinkedIn & Facebook
#ve12
10. #2: Engage with your audience
• Build “buzz” before & between events
– Use your existing networks
– Create a LinkedIn group
– Or build using a platform like Eventbrite
• Make it easy for (potential) attendees to contribute to the buzz, by
providing ways for them to share event details
• Gamify your event – allow the social network to comment so they
can shape the event.
• Reward participation: it’s easy to incentivise via a Facebook &
Twitter competitions

15. Share with your audience
• Share your content
• Previous event content can be published:
– Video to YouTube, Vimeo
– Presentations to a blog, Slideshare
– Pictures to Flickr, Tumblr
– Tweet wall

17. During the event…
• Get location check-ins
– Facebook check-in
– Twitter
– Foursquare
• Tweet updates, reminders, buzz
• Over multiple days
– Email updates
– Facebook, LinkedIn

18. #3: Retain your audience
• Post-event, you don’t want to lose your audience –
it’s going to make next year much harder!
• Encourage them to keep communicating
– Virtually – through the networks you have created
– IRL – consider Meetups
• Share again
– Target the non-attendees

20. #4: Monitor & Analyse
• At some point, someone will want to know what’s
worked
• Social media allows you to monitor buzz and
measure the “sentiment” of mentions

Editor's Notes
Event organisers & venue managers should all learn something new
Influencers – people with an expertise and a large following. They can become advocates for you / your brand & your event
Many ways to find influencers – wefollow is one. This is Twitter-only. Don’t view this as a way to find individual followers, but a way to find people who can be tweeted, will retweet and engage in public conversation. Note the BaT advert! An example of behavioural advertising (another seminar!).
Klout uses several social media evaluate an individual’s “influence”.
Advertising – for public events. Really simple & can be incredibly powerful.
