Planned Parenthood By Margaret Sanger
The first birth control clinic in the United States opened on October 16, 1916 by Margaret Sanger. Her
nonprofit organization is now known as Planned Parenthood. Sanger was not only an advocate for
women s reproductive rights, but also a vocal eugenic enthusiast. Her motives behind starting the
organization were to educate women about the reproductive process allowing them to choose when
and whether to bear children. Although Sanger supported the eugenics movement and sterilization, we
cannot forget about all of the men and women her organization helped and continues to help to this
day.
Growing up Sanger s father was an unstable man who was incapable of providing adequately for his
large family. Although a skilled craftsman, he was unable to properly care for his family because he
preferred drinking over earning a steady wage, while his 11 children suffered bitterly from privation.
Once Sanger grew older she fled her unhappy home in search for a better life. She attended college
and found it was not for her and later met her husband who she had 3 children with. Sanger detested
domestic life and neglected her children to the point that neighbors had to step in and care for them (
Margaret Sanger ). It is safe to say Sanger did not have it easy growing up. Living such a rough
childhood can be partial to blame for her eugenic views.
