Researchers tested different row covers for early tomato production in central Iowa. They found that using agribon or slitted clear plastic row covers increased early tomato yields by 1.7 times compared to no row cover. The agribon kept temperatures about 5 degrees F cooler than the slitted plastic. For later harvests, yields were higher without row covers as the covers caused earlier fruit maturation. Overall marketable seasonal yields were similar between slitted plastic row cover and no cover, indicating row covers provide an early yield advantage but do not increase total production. The variety Mountain Fresh produced the highest percentage of marketable fruit overall.
