This document discusses the flora and fauna of Cyprus. It notes that Cyprus has over 1950 species of flora, of which 153 are endemic. The fauna includes 32 mammal species, 126 reptile and amphibian species, 364 bird species, and thousands of insect species. Cyprus' geographic position at the intersection of three continents and long isolation have led to great biodiversity and many endemic species. Notable endemic fauna mentioned include dwarf elephants and hippos that once inhabited the island.
The threadfin breams consist of the family Nemipteridae within the order Perciformes. They are also known as whiptail breams and false snappers.
They are found in tropical waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Most species are benthic carnivores, preying on smaller fishes, cephalopods, crustaceans and polychaetes; however, a few species eat plankton.
Threadfin bream harbour parasites. A study conducted in New Caledonia has shown that the fork-tailed threadfin bream (Nemipterus furcosus) harboured 25 species of parasites, including nematodes, cestodes, digeneans, monogeneans, isopods, and copepods. None of these parasites is transmitted to humans.[

They are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. Jellyfish have drifted along on ocean currents for millions of years, even before dinosaurs lived on the Earth. Some jellyfish are clear, but others are in vibrant colors such as pink, yellow, blue, and purple, and often are luminescent. The Chinese have fished jellyfish for 1,700 years. They are considered a delicacy and are used in Chinese medicine. Jellyfish (also known as jellies and sea jellies) are boneless animals that float freely through the world's oceans. Although jellyfish exist in our oceans worldwide they are particularly prominent in coastal areas. There are thought to be around 2,000 different species of jellyfish, the most common being the big, colorful ones found in warmer coastal areas. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, warned over-fishing in the Mediterranean was boosting jellyfish, which reduce stocks further and it called for jellyfish to be used in food, medicine and cosmetics. Jellyfish have powerful anti-aging properties that may benefit both the cosmetics and fishing industries.

Class
The phylum group is then divided into even smaller groups, known as classes. The Chordata (vertebrates) phylum splits up into Mammalia (Mammals), Actinopterygii (Bony Fish), Chondrichthyes (Cartilaginous Fish) , Aves (Birds), Amphibia (Amphibians) and Reptilia (Reptiles).
Order
Each class is divided into small groups again, known as orders. The class Mammalia (Mammals), splits into different groups including Carnivora, Primate, Artiodactyla and Rodentia.
Family
In every order, there are different families of animals which all have very similar features. The Carnivora order breaks into families that include Felidae (Cats), Canidae (Dogs), Ursidae (Bears), and Mustelidae (Weasels).
Genus
Every animal family is then divided into small groups known as genus. Each genus contains animals that have very similar features and are closely related. For example, the Felidae (Cat) family contains genus including Felis (small Cats and domestic Cats), Panthera (Tigers, Leopards, Jaguars and Lions) and Puma (Panthers and Cougars).
Species
Each individual species within the genus is named after it's individual features and characteristics. The names of animals are in Latin so that they can be understood worldwide, and consist of two words. The first word in the name of an animal will be the genus, and the second name indicates the specific species.

The skin is covered in protective scales, with some exceptions (lampreys, ocean sunfish). All fins have fins of some sort, all the size, number, and shape vary. Fish breathe through gills, and only a very few have actual lungs. Most fish have a special organ known as a swim bladder that prevents them from sinking, and, in some cases, aids in respiration. The common name "fish" refers to four different classes, depending on the person classifying them (there are numerous different ways to classify fish). Bony fish also have special adaptations that allow them to remain buoyant. A special organ called a swim bladder housed under the bony skeleton is a gas filled chamber that allows the bony fish to remain floating in the water. Some fish have a connection between this organ and the digestive tract to allow the extraction of oxygen. Another special adaptation is the operculum, a flap on each side of the fish that covers the chambers housing the gills. A bony fish is able to breathe without swimming simply by moving the operculum. Other hallmarks of these fish are paired fins, many teeth, dermal scales in the skin (in most species), and numerous vertebrae. Most bony fish are ray-finned fish, meaning that they have thin, flexible skeletal rays. Lobe-finned fish, the other type of bony fish, have muscular fins supported by bones. Only one species of lobe-finned fish, the coelacanth, still lives. However, it was the lobe-finned fish that made possible the colonization of land.

years ago, Cyprus has always been an island. The final
configuration of the shape of Cyprus was the result of
the interaction of the differential elevation of the island
and the fluctuation of the sea level during the glacial

amounts of water were trapped in the ice, resulting in
falling sea levels above 100 meters and the formation of
small islands east of the Cape of the Apostle Andrew.

4. It is believed that these islands helped the first
mammals, such as elephants and hippos, to
colonize the island. The animals were later
mutated into dwarf elephants and hippos due to
isolation and limited food. Their final extinction
10,000 years ago is due to humans, as evidenced
by recent excavations in the settlement of
Aetokremmos in Akrotiri, where evidence was
found that hundreds of such mammals were killed
and dismembered for food. Also during the glacial
period the coasts extend to the sea a few
kilometers beyond the current coastline.

been recorded in Cyprus. Of these, 48 are permanent residents
and the remaining 316 are migrants. The total number of birds
giving birth in Cyprus is 114 and includes birds that have given

place there are 7 endemic birds. One species and six varieties:
