This document provides an overview of aluminum extrusion technology. It discusses the fundamentals of extrusion, including the history and importance of education in the field. Extrusion is defined as a process where a block of metal is forced to flow through a die opening of smaller cross-section. The two main types are direct extrusion, where the billet moves relative to the container, and indirect extrusion, where the die moves but the billet does not. Methods like direct, indirect, billet-on-billet, and porthole/bridge die extrusion are described. The mechanics of extrusion and metal flow patterns are also summarized.

Roll forming Long parts with constant complex cross-sections; good surface finish; high
production rates; high tooling costs.
Stretch forming
Large parts with shallow contours; suitable for low-quantity production; high
labor costs; tooling and equipment costs depend on part size.
Drawing Shallow or deep parts with relatively simple shapes; high production rates;
high tooling and equipment costs.
Stamping Includes a variety of operations, such as punching, blanking, embossing,
bending, flanging, and coining; simple or complex shapes formed at high
production rates; tooling and equipment costs can be high, but labor costs
are low.
Rubber-pad
forming
Drawing and embossing of simple or complex shapes; sheet surface protected
by rubber membranes; flexibility of operation; low tooling costs.
Spinning Small or large axisymmetric parts; good surface finish; low tooling costs, but
labor costs can be high unless operations are automated.
Superplastic
forming
Complex shapes, fine detail, and close tolerances; forming times are long,
and hence production rates are low; parts not suitable for high-temperature
use.
Peen forming Shallow contours on large sheets; flexibility of operation; equipment costs
can be high; process is also used for straightening parts.
Explosive
forming
Very large sheets with relatively complex shapes, although usually axisymmetric;
low tooling costs, but high labor costs; suitable for low-quantity
production; long cycle times.
Magnetic-pulse
forming
Shallow forming, bulging, and embossing operations on relatively lowstrength
sheets; most suitable for tubular shapes; high production rates;
requires special tooling.
The cold forging, cold extrusion, and cold heading are general terms for plastic processing. Cold forging, also called cold volume forming, is a manufacturing process and a processing method. Cold forging is the forming process below the recrystallization temperature of the material, and the forging performed below the recovery temperature.

Hot working and cold working of metals – Forging processes – Open, impression and closed die forging – Types of Forging Machines – Typical forging operations. Rolling of metals– Types of Rolling – Flat strip rolling – shape rolling operations – Defects in rolled parts. Principle of rod and wire drawing – Tube drawing – Principles and types of Extrusion – Hot and Cold extrusion.
The first chapter of this book discusses the fundamentals of extrusion
technology, including extrusion principles, processes, mechanics, and
variables and their effects on extrusion. The extrusion industry is now over 100 years old. A concern within the industry is the continuing education necessary to upgrade knowledge about aluminum extrusion technology, both in the academic and industrial communities.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
