NAPOLEON S INFLUENCE ON MODERN WESTERN MILITARY ARMIES
History 100, Staff Group A, CGSC Class 14 001
27 March 2014
1
Throughout history, military leaders have immortalized their legacies by vanquishing their enemies in
the battlefield against overwhelming odds. Soldiers and historians have revered their accomplishments
by studying their mastery in the art of warfare with the hopes mimicking their accomplishments. Of
them all, Napoleon Bonaparte is considered the best military leader in the history of the Western
World and has been the most influential with the development of modern day Western armies.
According to Knox, military revolutions are changes in the nature and purpose of war itself. 1

the control of constantly larger and more widely dispersed forces. 5 According to Lynn, by
subdividing his army into corps, Napoleon enhanced command and control. It improved logistics,
since several corps operating along separate lines of advance could supply themselves more easily
than could a single large army operating along a single route. 6 In addition to the forming of corps and
divisions, Napoleon created brigade and army levels of commands. This unique military
organizational structure allowed him to effectively move his large armies and outmaneuver his
enemies.
Like the French, the U.S. Army s military organizational structure consists of armies, corps, divisions,
brigades, and battalions. The only exception is the regional commands that it uses. Each command
level organization consists of a robust staff that assists commanders with developing plans and
executing orders. This organizational structure provides an efficient method of commanding and
controlling from the lowest to the highest level of commands.
The transformation of the French military organizational structure provided better command and
control for large armies. However, its use of combined arms allowed the French to annihilate their
enemies in the battlefield. The French had pioneered the use of combat division, combining

Homosexual Marriage Analysis
Maggie Gallagher argues that she is not in favor of homosexual marriage which is relationship view,
because it ruins the basic human value, procreation. Her strongest argument according to her essay
would be the continuation of society since at one point in the world, there was a low population. In
addition, as concluded by many scientists, we could stop having children and still be able to survive
with the people and resources that we have. Since this is her main reason for the argument, she is
using Natural Law Theory for her explanation. She believes if there is another reason to establish a
marriage, it would ruin the reputation of a marriage.

Effect Of The Reminder System On Appointment Nonadherence...
This experiment was used to determine the impact of reminder systems on appointment nonadherence
rates in a clinic population. Clinician time lost due to no shows is unrecoverable. Because of the
unpredictable nature of appointment nonadherence, providers schedule gaps cannot be filled with
other patients. Since the no shows then to occur at spotty intervals, creating short periods of
downtime, it is even difficult for providers to fill the time with administrative tasks. The loss of
revenue from fees that would have been charged for services had patients kept their appointments
affects clinic budgets significantly (Maxwell 2001). According to Sims (2012) Missed outpatient

sample (Sims, 2012, p. 161). The results of this research is significant when it comes to try to bring
the maximum amount of money to the clinic. The more patients that adhere to the appointment, the
more money the clinic brings in. Short message service is a low cost tool that could be used to create
higher adherence rates. In England alone, a 25% to 28% reduction in missed outpatient appointments
would translate to national cost savings of more than $245 million per year. Short message service
encourages patients to show up to their scheduled appointments. Another significant study was
Maxwell s study that examined effectiveness of reminder systems on appointment adherence rates.
The goal of this study was to determine the impact of reminder systems on appointment adherence
rates within a clinic. According to Maxwell from a daily list of patients scheduling appointments,
patients who verbally consented to participate in the study were randomly assigned to receive a phone
reminder, mailed reminder, or no reminder (control group). The three groups consisted of (1) patients
receiving an automated telephone reminder of their appointment the day prior to the actual
appointment, (2) patients receiving a postcard reminder within 5 days prior to the actual appointment,
and (3) patients receiving no reminder (p. 507). The findings of this study also showed

Controversy Over the United States Providing Developmental...
Throughout history and present day times, many countries such as Germany, France, and Canada have
provided assistance and aid to underdeveloped countries to help alleviate poverty. The United States
itself issues aid to developing countries which include Israel, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Ethiopia; this
has been an American practice since 1947 after World War II. During the time period from 1947 to
1949 the United States, under the Marshall Plan, provided both financial and technical assistance to
Europe and Asia after the war. As a result, Europe was rebuilt both politically and economically.
Today the United States continues to provide aid to underdeveloped countries, helping them evolve
and strengthen their economy. Many Americans believe that America is doing the right thing in
issuing aid, while others hold the opinion that the United States should not issue aid, and that the issue
of money to developing countries needs to stop. On one side of the issue the supporters of
developmental aid believe that the United States is doing more than a great job by offering economic
assistance to countries that need help to develop. These individuals are aware of the unfortunate
poverty levels in many countries abroad. They believe that it is the duty of the American people to
help reduce the poverty levels in countries in which people live with less than a dollar a day. In fact,
some supporters believe that the U.S. is not offering enough support to the poorer countries. Many

The American Industrial Revolution
The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial
revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most
importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource
needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the
US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could
be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material
production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off
pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working
conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around
dangerous machines at a young age.
After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel
production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over triple
the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase steel
production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the
industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. As a result of having
more steel, more railroads and buildings can be built for cheaper, improving transportation

This analysis is of the organizational of Symmetry Financial. This essay will discuss the attitudes,
leadership, managerial policies, and practices used by them. By using this data, I will provide a list of
recommendations on how to improve the company. This analysis will describe the culture, nature of
the company, motivational techniques, mores of communication used, and the emotional intelligence.
I will provide information about the company to ensure the readers understand all of the different
categories used to analyze the company. I will provide information on how individuals, and groups of
people behave within the organization. I will be evaluating their leadership techniques and how the
owners assist in the day to day running of the business.
One of the most important things a business needs to be successful is happy employees. It is important
for employees and managers have an established plan to deal with critical matters. They must study
the behavior of their employees to decide how they will achieve their desired goals. Organizational
behavior is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the interface between human
behavior and the organization, and the organization itself. We can divide organizational behavior into
3 separate categories. The first one is the individuals within the organization. The second is the work
group which is made by pacing workers into specific groups. The last one is how the organization
itself behaves.

The Human Of Human Visual System
Facial Recognition
Abstract
One of the most impressive skills of the human visual system is our ability to identify an individual
from a brief glance at their face, which will distinguish that certain individual from hundreds of others
one knows. Despite the variations in the appearance of each face as it changes in expression and
hairstyle. The ability to recognize human faces is so important in that the brain appears to have an area
solely devoted to the task. The fusiform gyrus is the area responsible for this. Brain studies consistently
find that this region of the temporal lobe of the brain becomes active when people look at faces.
Skeptics have countered that these studies show only an assumption, not proof, that activity in this
area is essential for face recognition. Thanks to the willingness of an intrepid patient, a new study
provides evidence that neurons in this area help humans recognize faces, and not other body parts or
objects.
The act of recognizing a face is actually quite complex. Faces must be accurately recognized in any
condition, even while moving. But unlike other objects, faces are intimately involved in
communication, and our brains must be able to extract a tremendous amount of subtle detail from just
a glance. So while some of the issues involved in face recognition are the same as for recognizing any
object, other issues are unique to faces.
There is a deep controversy in face recognition

Corvus Scavenger
Ravens (Corvus corax) are known to be scavengers and there have been observations that they may
have developed a foraging strategy that involves grey wolves (Canis lupis). Henrich et al. (2002)
discussed the benefits that the common raven gain by utilizing kleptoparasitism as a foraging strategy
in order to reduce risk and search time, as well as obtaining mammalian prey that they would likely
never be able to hunt without wolves. A kleptoparasitic relationship means that ravens steal the prey
that the wolves have caught. Hayes et al. (2005) discussed how skillful ravens have become at
scavengers and they are highly dependent on wolf predation particularly during the winter. They also

first, the ravens did not go near the board and it took about a month and a half to grow accustomed to
the board. Once the ravens showed comfort to be near by the board, they began to add food of small
and large sizes around the board and recorded the ravens behavior for two weeks. From there, they
placed the food on the board and recorded the ravens behavior for another two weeks. There was a
significant difference with the choices when the board was introduced. The board has changed their
behavior to primarily choose the smaller pieces and the ravens that did choose the larger pieces had
other ravens stealing their food instead of going to the board to get

The Lokia And Like The Leaves By Graciela Huinao And Two...
Scars that can t be seen, are the hardest to heal. This phrase can be connected to the two literary
poems, The Lokia, written by Graciela Huinao and Like the Leaves poet by Humberto Ak abal. In The

Similarity, the second poem Like the Leaves, illustrates that a tree is a figure of a Native American
losing their culture and themselves to the injustices of their society. Both of these two poems are then
connected to a historical text, Canada s Hidden History, My Mother and Me, authored by Gabrielle

leaders influence the culture of their organisations. Researches talk about a range of leadership

summarised the definition of leadership constitutes five elements. First of all, ask question to set

In the last few years the economic growth of China has caused the demand (and supply) of all kinds of

The Globe and Mail October 18th 2010.
Demand and supply are the quantity of a good or service that consumers and producers are willing
able to purchase and produce at a given price in a given time period. Equilibrium is a state of rest, self
perpetuating in the absence of outside disturbance. At this price, the quantity demanded equals
quantity supplied. Price elasticity of demand (PED) is the responsiveness of demand in change of

This sends a signal to suppliers to increase price until a new equilibrium is reached at price P1 and
quantity demanded Q1.
However, instead of keeping the price at P1, the suppliers will rather shift the supply curve to the right
by exporting more pecans because the Chinese demand is greater than the demand North American
demand and they can make more profit by allocating resources to China instead. Here we assume that
PE is greater than North American price of pecans.
This causes a positive shift in supply for China, from SC to SC1. Now, at price P1, Q1 pecans is

EUCLID: The Man Who Created a Math Class
Euclid of Alexandria was born in about 325 BC. He is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity
best known for his dissertation on mathematics. He was able to create The Elements which included
the composition of many other famous mathematicians together. He began exploring math because he
felt that he needed to compile certain things and fix certain postulates and theorems. His book
included, many of Eudoxus theorems, he perfected many of Theaetetus s theorems also. Much of

There is a thought that he was able to build up a school in Alexandria that was very vigorous and

Euclid s most famous work is his dissertation on mathematics The Elements. The book was a
compilation of knowledge that became the center of mathematical teaching for 2000 years. Probably
Euclid first proved no results in The Elements but the organization of the material and its exposition
are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using earlier textbooks as he
writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions, which are never used such as
that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. This book first began the book by giving the definition
of five postulates. The first three are based upon constructions. For example, the first one is that a
straight line can be drawn between two points. These three postulates also describe lines, circles, and
the existence of points and the possible existence of other geometric objects. The fourth and fifth
postulates are written in a different nature. Postulate four states that all right angles are equal. The fifth
one is very famous. It is also can be referred to as the parallel, the fifth parallel. It states that one and
only one line can be drawn through a point parallel to a given line. His decision to create this

Assess sociological explanations of changes in the status of childhood?
Childhood is a social construction and varies between times, places and groups. Most sociologists see
our ides of childhood as a fairly recent one, the result of industrialisation and other social changes.
Modern society constructs childhood as a tie of vulnerability, innocence and segregation from the
adult world. The March of progress sociologist believe we live in an increasingly child centred
society. They state that children have existence of child poverty, abuse and exploitation. Child

These have encouraged parents to make a greater financial and emotional investment in the fewer
children that we have now. Children s health and development became the subject of medical
knowledge. Jacques Donzelot (1977) observes how theories of child development that began to appear
from the 19th century. The laws and policies that apply specifically to children, such as minimum
wages for a wide range of activities from sex to smoking, have reinforced the idea that children are
different from adults and so different rules must be applied to their behaviour.
The march of progress view
Is that position of children has improved dramatically in a relatively short period of time. However,
conflict sociologist such as Marxists and feminists dispute this. They argue that society is based on
conflicts between social groups such as social classes or between genders. In this conflict, some
groups have more power, status or wealthy than others. Conflict sociologist see the relationship
between groups as one of domination and subordination, in which the dominant act as oppressors.
Conflict sociologist argues that the march of progress view of modern childhood is based on false and
idealised image that ignores important inequalities. They criticise the march of progress view on two
grounds and they; that there are inequalities among children in terms of the opportunities and risks

What Are Some Examples Of Foreshadowing In Watership Down
Watership Down, written by Richard Adams in 1970, is a story centered around rabbits. The two main
characters are Hazel and Fiver. When Fiver senses that there is danger in the warren, Hazel and Fiver
go to the leader of the warren, Threarah and tell him that all of the rabbits must leave the warren
because of danger. Threarah says it is too risky to move all over the rabbits and insist that there is no
danger. Regardless, Hazel and Fiver decide to leave the warren and look for a new home. Along the
way they come across many obstacles, but in the end, they are able to create a safe new warren.

All of the animals are personified because rabbits don t actually talk, but the writer Richard Adams
made them seem almost human. Without personification the story would simple be about rabbits
hoping around. Adams also uses foreshadowing in the book. One example of this is when Fiver says,
Oh, Hazel! This is where it comes from! I know now something very bad! Some terrible thing coming
closer and closer (Adams 7). This is foreshadowing because it gives an idea of what is going to
happen in the future of the story and later in the book something terrible did happen. Foreshadowing
makes the story interesting and can keep the reader interested. There are also many different similes
used throughout the story. The light, full and smooth, lay like a gold rind over the turf (Adams 123) I
can feel the danger like a wire round my neck like a wire Hazel, help? (Adams 13). These are
examples of similes because they use the words like or as to compare two different things. Simile help
the reader to be able to see what is happening in the story in their mind and to be able to imagine it.
For example, Her hair was red is dull and is not very descriptive, but Her hair was as red as fire gives
the reader an idea of how red it the hair was and allows the reader to imagine it. Without similes

Back Pain Research Paper
Textbooks have been around for ages, and yet they hold a lot of information, they do not contain all
that is needed. You would think with all the technology textbooks would be extinct by now. Don t you
think its about time they were replaced by some sort of electronic device? A couple of students have
already started using notebook computers instead of textbooks. In this time, textbooks are not as
sufficient since this generation practically runs on technology. With this generation, textbooks can
possibly disappear. Textbooks can weigh up to 15 pounds on a student s back. This weight can cause
backache and later turn into other problems, like scoliosis. This back pain can affect students
concentration. A study done by David Siambanes of the Inland Empire Spine Center in Riverside,
California. The study found that most students said that their back hurt from their backpacks; 64%

The Five Differences Between Physical And Human Geography
Physical Geography and Human Geography
Physical geography looks at the ordinary course of the Earth, such as weather and plate tectonics.
Human geography looks at the impact and behavior of people and how they relate to the physical
world.
Location
Location pinpoints different positions, people, and places on the earth surface. It is defined for
geography using two terms, absolute and relative.
Absolute location vs relative location
Absolute location answers the question where is it (The Five Themes of Geography pdf). It s the place
on earth which can be located using longitude and latitude. The specific spot on the planet.

Humans are adept at modifying and adapting to different environments. Starting off as hunters and
gathers, humans have progressed to the ability to farm and raise livestock. We have further modified
our environment to the point trade is used primarily with currency. We now can buy a large variety of
different foods from supermarkets and many different styles of clothing from a huge selection of
clothing stores. We now use heaters and a/c units to modify our climate in houses and businesses. The
selection and specialization of shelter also points to how well humans have adapted. We continue to
develop and modify our existing environments to increase our standard of living and longevity of life.
There is a growing concern we may be harming our current environment with the overuse of fossil
fuels.
Movement
Movement deals with studies of societal migration and circulation in the different countries of the
world. It defines how people get from one place to another locally and globally.
Humans Interacting on the Earth
Physical movement of people allows the human race to explore different things such as the ocean,
moon, and land. Another characteristic of movement is the moving of possessions from one place to
another on earth. It is the study of human exchange. A particularly essential aspect of movement is the
movement of people s ideas.

First Battle Of Hoxington Research Paper
The First Battle of Lexington
How would you feel if you found yourself on a battlefield firing red hot cannon shots at moving hay
bales? This is exactly what soldiers did in the First Battle of Lexington. This battle was not as
tiresome as the battles of Bull Run or other battles and under 200 casualties from both sides combined
came out of this battle.
The First Battle of Lexington, which is located in Missouri, surprisingly also known as the Battle of
the Hemp Bales or the Siege of Lexington, was fought for eight tedious days in 1861. From September
12 to September 20 the Union army and the pro Confederate Missouri state guard in Lexington
furiously clashed with muskets canons, bayonets and hemp bales. The Missouri state guard was a
militia of approximately 25000 Confederate soldiers, although not all of these soldiers were used in
this battle. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Confederate General Sterling Price began fighting at Lexington on September 12 when two federal

Animal Farm Character Analysis
On a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, I am sitting at the skate park on the bench. I was watching kids
skate around then I suddenly turn my attention on four boys. Three of which are picking on a boy who
is smaller than them because he didn t know the skills nor tricks that they knew. I finally couldn t
stand hearing them pick on him anymore, so I marched over to where they were standing pulled the
boy away from the situation and talked to him about sticking up for himself during anytime that
something like that may occur. I told him that he shouldn t let people walk all over him. In the story
Animal Farm by George Orwell the animals have accomplished a rebellion against the humans to run
them out of the farm. What caused the rebellion was mistreatment against the animals. Napoleon the
main character, then becomes the so called leader of the animals. He has many self conflicts and
conflicts with others. It is difficult to say who does the you the most harm: enemies with the worst
intentions or friends with the best. At least you know your enemies are the people who don t like you,
will have bad intentions, but when your real friends try to help, they can cause more harm than good
because they are supposed to be your friend so they would want to help but that help can do more
harm but it isn t intended. Some may argue that it can be easy to tell who will do the most harm:
enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best, but it s not. I can see why some may argue

The current CSI MasterFormat ™ 2004 Edition [1] comes closest to covering all the scope of work
found in the construction of Building Facilities and Site Work. It falls short in addressing the unique
requirements of estimators, schedulers and cost engineers in identifying all phases of work included in
major Infrastructure work such as Build Own and Transfer (BOT) projects. This Standard Work
Breakdown attempts to format the project into a multi level WBS suited to estimate, schedule, track
cost and measure performance on international infrastructure projects. The breakdown is also designed
to facilitate the data transfer of a standard work breakdown between common estimating, scheduling
and cost control software applications. The International Infrastructure Project Work Breakdown

Civil Infrastructure WBS. The Sub Projects within a Civil Infrastructure Project Life Cycle Traditional

Semiotics Analysis of Lego Advert
Lego targets parents, offering an alternative to television!
From the first glance, it is immediately noticeable that this controversial advertisement is clearly very
different from the traditional advertisements one would expect from Lego. It definitely has the parents
as the target audience and is focusing on the parent s fear of bad influences on their children.
When one considers who the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readers would be as defined by
Stuart Hall (Hall et al. 1980), it becomes noticeable that the preferred reading for this advertisement
would be that of wealthy young parents that can still relate to playing with Lego when they too were
children. Even more so would be the parents that are influenced by the ... Show more content on

The target audience of the advertisement can easily make a connotation with the signs given in the
first frame that this woman is about to have an intimate and maybe even sexual encounter. Her partner
being unknown to the audience does signify that he is likely unknown to her as well. The door in the
right of the image serves as a great use of an anchor to confirm to the audience that these two are
about to have a monument in private behind a closed door.
The signs in the second frame of the advert can be denoted as a young male sitting on a white sofa
holding an object to his head. The audience cannot see the object his holding as it has been censored
out with Lego blocks. There is also a bottle of orange liquid with black labels. The room the man is
sitting in is very sterile and empty and the only other known items visible is a newspaper, knocked
over drinking glass and a chest of draws in the background.
As with the first frame, the creators of the advert, DDB advertising agency (Best ad, 2009, online),
were relying on semiotics. They were trusting that in our modern culture the audience would be able
to see the censored shape and colours of the Lego pixelated object and use it as an indexed sign to
derive the meaning that the man is in fact holding a gun against his head.
This notion is anchored by the man s facial expression. The clever use of semiotics tool of

Don T Give Up The Fight And Susan B. Anthony Dares To Vote
The stories Don t Give Up the Fight and Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote share a common theme
which is perseverance. In the story Don t Give Up the Fight, Ava is being bullied by the boys on the
track team, because she is the only girl. Susan in Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote, shows perseverance
because, she had to speak up even though she would get arrested. While both of the stories share a
common theme the character s actions are very different. The story Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote,
Susan fights for women s rights using speech. While Ava, in the story Don t Give Up the Fight, raced
one of the boys on the track team making her use physical activity to redeem herself.
In Don t Give Up the Fight perseverance is showed in most of the text. For example, Jacob a boy on
the track team said If you beat me to the tree I believe you. This is important to notice because, this
shows that Jacob thinks that Ava can t win any races. Also, the boys were making fun of her on the bus
because she was very quiet. So, the boys asked, Are you dead? Because Ava didn t answer the boys
the first time. But, what really hurt her was when she saw coach McCoy laughing when the boys said
something really mean. This is important to notice because, she was traumatized from coach McCoy ...

Correlation as a measure of association summary
Introduction
In this essay I will describe correlation is a measure of association as well as describe different
methods of establishing a correlation between variables. In this essay I will also explain advantages
and disadvantages of each method, were each must be applied, and provide particular circumstances
and examples in which a researcher may want to establish correlation

In situations where every/or nearly/case has its own unique rink, and there are no or a few ties, the
data are said to be fully ordered (Monette, Sullivan amp; DeJong, (2011).The interval data the most
used measured of association for interval data is the correction or Pearson s r. The correlation
coefficient is mathematically related to both phi and Spearman s rho, making comparisons among
them possible (Monette, Sullivan amp; DeJong, (2011).
There are several different kinds of relationships between variables. Before drawing a conclusion, you
should first understand how one variable changes with the other. This means you need to establish
how the variables are related is the relationship linear or quadratic or inverse or logarithmic or
something else ( Relationship Between Variables , n.d) advantages and disadvantages for correlational
research methods
Correlation is a measure of association that tests whether a relationship exists between two variables.
It indicates both the strength of the association and its direction (direct or inverse). The Pearson
product moment correlation coefficient, written as r, can describe a linear relationship between two
variables Correlation (n.d). As a human service professional and completing research there are
advantages and disadvantages to correlational research methods, such as using correlational research it

Tijuana Straits, By Kem Nunn
People do not always get to have the fairytale life they once dreamed of. Life comes with many
struggles, but people can overcome them if they really want to. They choose to follow a certain path in
their life, which at times it can be good or bad. In the book, Tijuana Straits , by Kem Nunn, the author
explains the different life experiences of certain characters in the book and how their life ended up.
Unlike a fairytale, he gives the different perspective and point of views of the characters. Nunn gave
enough information to know how the character s lives ended up the way it did. The characters, Fahey,
Armando, and Magdalena, were each described with a different persona so that each one sticks out
different than the other. Nunn gave the point of view of the characters so the readers can get a sense of
what each one of them is thinking of. There s a character named Fahey, an ex surfer who took the
wrong path and ended up owning and working in his worm farm, which is basically the protagonist in
the book. Fahey s life was described as a rollercoaster and he went into detail about it. Nunn states,
The man was so pissed about not getting more mileage out of a second offense that he kept Fahey in a
county lockup for six months awaiting transfer and another six in what they euphemistically called bus
therapy that is, in constant motion, from one facility to another, all the way to Leavenworth and back
again. (77). Nunn describes a scene in which Fahey was arrested for

Edward Mcclelland Roll The Middle Class Summary
Has there been a demise in the middle class? Edward McClelland believes there has been. Could he be
right? Since the 1970 s, the middle class has been slowly declining is the assumption that McClelland
makes. Through my life experiences, I believe McClelland has some strong points but could be wrong
in some areas. And I believe where you are located can also makes a difference. In Edward
McClelland s article, RIP, the Middle Class: 1946 2013 , McClelland argues that there has been a
decline in the middle class since the 1980 s. He begins his article remembering times in the 1970 s,
when the middle class was able to live similar to the upper class. He stated I saw the evidence of
prosperity distributed equally among the social classes: speedboats, Corvette Stingrays, waterbeds,
snowmobiles, motorcycles, hunting rifles, RV s, CB radios. This was his evidence that the middle
class was doing well and prospering. He also gave an example of a couple he knew. This couple was

second because of the confession of one of the witches who was accused. Her name was Tituba which
after she admitted to being a witch and using witchcraft. Didn t turn out well for the town of Salem, it
caused paranoia to set in with the neighbors turning against each other. So from then on the

I will be evaluating Lurhman s use of mise en scene and its success in reflecting the narrative and
emotions of the characters. I will be assessing two scenes from two movies (The Great Gatsby, Romeo

Gatsby is another successful scene. In The Great Gatsby the mise en scene is used to show off the
romance and magnificence of Jay Gatsby it is used to describe his personality and economic status. In
Romeo and Juliet the success comes from the symbolism of the water and the use of camera position.

Why Marathon Running Is Good for Your Health
If you want a full body workout, running is one of the simplest and easiest ways to get yourself fit.
You can start right away since you don t need any equipment when you run, just your workout clothes
and running shoes.
Running is a well loved workout of several people. In fact, in the United States alone, there are about
65 million people who went running or jogging in 2016. Running is generally good for your body
since it does not only help you to lose weight and tone your muscles, but it also improves your mental

When you run, your body temperature increases which help inhibit the growth of bacteria in your
body. Running also hastens the circulation of the body s protective cells throughout the body enabling
your immune system to fend off viruses and bacteria.
Boosts your confidence and relieves stress. If you finished running longer miles and crossed the finish
line, it gives you a sense of achievement. Successfully achieving your goals boosts your confidence
and it inspires you to do more. Your body also releases a chemical called endorphin when you
exercise. Endorphins are your body s feel good chemicals hence relieving you of stress.
Helps build your endurance and strength. Running marathons requires a lot of preparation and
training. Compared to those who are only training for running short miles, long distance runners
undergo a more rigorous running program that enables them to build their endurance and strengthen
their muscles to last a 26 mile run.
Lets you meet new friends. Running seems to be a solo activity since you only depend on yourself
when reaching for the finish line. However, running marathons also lets you connect with other people

Dog Parks Benefits
I strongly agree a dog parks benefits all. I think that every state should have a dog park. Dogs need to
exercise. You cant walk your dog without a leash in public areas. Plus it would raise property values.
If a dog doesnt exercise it becomes lazy. The dog can also become unhealthy. Most of the time dogs
can t just run around any where they want. If they had a park then no one would have to worry about
the dangers of someone being bitten. If dogs are always house bond it can cause bad behavior. It can
even cause for the dog to attack the owner. Which does nt sound like a good thing.
If I were a dog owner i would nt want my dog on the leash all the time. I would feel like I was tryna

The Glass Ceiling, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson
Faces of Women The glass ceiling is something still very present in today s society. Women in the
workforce are constantly trying to break through barriers set by society to break away from
stereotypes. Many women work twice as hard and still get paid significantly less than their male co
workers. They experience sex typing from a young age being pushed to study more feminine
occupations, such as nursing. While on the other hand men are encouraged to seek positions of power
and leadership. If a woman decides to choose an occupation that demands the use of intellectual
thinking, they are given boundaries to which they are limited. Women are seen as the weaker sex and
have been severely over diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or any other type of mental illness. We
see this issue addressed in Virginia Woolf s Professions for Women and Susanna Kaysen s memoir
Girl, Interrupted . Women are taught to that they need to display certain behavior and uphold a perfect
appearance in order to be taken seriously in society. Charlotte Perkins Stetson uses the art of writing to
bring us along the emotional ride of a woman who s true feelings were labeled unreliable in her story
The Yellow Wall Paper . For decades women have struggled with being treated as subordinates and
this continues today. We are able to see the unjust treatment of women reflected in their salaries,
promotions, and general treatment in the workforce, specifically the medical field. There has been

in the war, there were many supporters and non supporters that included various political groups,
interest groups, students, Civil Rights groups, and the military. Through all of the issues of U.S.
involvement up to the major events that took place during the time period of 1964 1968, a great deal
happened and the U.S. was unsuccessful in attaining the goal that it wished to achieve in Vietnam;
ending the reign of communism. Arising out of issues originating in the Cold War and primarily the
stopping of the spread of communism, the Vietnam War had a lasting impact that would never be
forgotten. Many Americans believed that the containment doctrine, which was devised by George
Kennan, was the key doctrine that got the United States involved in the Vietnam War to begin with;
however, others say that no president really decided to go to wage war in Vietnam but instead became
involved because of increasing commitment over many years (Brinkley, 843). From right after the end
of World War II in

Why Advertising Alcohol Is Destroying Public Well-Being Essay
Brenna Clarine
Mrs. Vanwormer
C.P. Reading Writing
6 May 2016
Why Advertising Alcohol Is Destroying Public Well Being When I was nine years old, I remember
seeing the most delectable, mouthwatering commercial on television. It was for beer. Growing up in a
family that did not drink, I never thought beer could look so appetizing. The beverage was everywhere
I looked except for in my own fridge. Not only adults, but kids and teens everywhere are being
bombarded with alcohol advertisements. Many of these youths choose to succumb to these ads and
end up with destructive drinking habits. Not only is alcohol damaging to youth but also to adults.
According to a U.S. study, adults were found to put themselves at severe risk of harm after having
more than four drinks in one session (Medew). This number can change depending on the gender, size,
athleticism, and other factors of the consumer. Although some may say that alcohol is not too
damaging if drunk responsibly, the fact that alcohol is a direct route to damaging organs like the liver,
heart, and pancreas and harming the brain is a red flag (NIHSeniorHealth). To whatever extent,
alcohol weakens the brain s control over movement, speech, memory, and especially judgement,
which often leads to impulsive behavior and other dangerous activities (NIHSeniorHealth). There are
plenty of harmful side effects of drinking, so the obvious solution to preserving the nation s well being
is to not encourage it. One quote by a Seattle

Pros And Cons Of Insanity Defense
The insanity defense, used when a defendant commits a crime but is mentally incapable of
understanding the consequence of his actions, is a controversial plea that has been in existence for
several centuries. The insanity defense uses the idea that the defendant committed the crime, but due
to the lack of mental instability, was unable to understand that their actions are wrong. The insanity
defense dates back to the 19th century. Daniel M Naghten was a woodworker who thought that he was
a target of a conspiracy with the pope and the British Prime Minister, Robert Peel. He went down to
10 Downing Street planning to attack Robert Peel, but instead shot and killed his secretary. During his
trial, the jury found Daniel M Naghten delusional and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using the insanity defense, it can get rid the death penalty all together. Instead of getting put up for
the electric chair, the defendant could plead insanity be admitted to an asylum, whether the person is
found guilty of the crime or not. Just by pleading insane, it promotes an atmosphere of guilt almost
instantly.Instead of trying to argue facts, the person has to prove to the defendant that their actions
were wrong but because of his or her mental state, they are innocent. Societies punish those who do
not have the mental capacity to know right from wrong. The insanity defense can also lessen or mean
no jail time. Instead of being sent to jail for committing a crime, the defendant will be sent to an
asylum. The chances of this plea working in cases is slim to none because the plea has become harder
to get away with. There are all these positive things about the insanity defense, but there are equally as
negative things. The insanity defense can also increase trial costs. If the defendant tries to plead guilty,
then the cost of the trial would go up, due to hiring a specialist to determine the level of existing
conditions. The insanity defense is not implemented in all court systems. Some court system do not
use the insanity defense. The insanity defense can be hard to prove sometimes. (Source

Essay on Graffiti as an Artform
Graffiti as an Artform The value of any message or work of art, whether it is hanging on the wall of a
gallery or a subway, lies on the intensity of the artist s or vandal s beliefs. Graffiti is an uncertain issue
in respect to its virtue. While the voice of the individual must never be lost in a society of shouts
growing larger and louder every second; graffiti is such a public medium that its integrity must be of
great concern. Graffiti is a vast wasteland of indefinite opinions. Foremost graffiti is illegal and a form
of vandalism, it invades peoples privacy and destroys their property. However, graffiti can be a means
by which one may permanently express one s self. It has the potential to convey a powerful, relevant

Even legitimate complaints about the behavior of some individuals should not be expressed in this
manner, they are to be judged within the walls of a courtroom not on the walls of a bathroom.
Another reason why people engage in graffiti is to shape their identities. They wish to leave a mark in
a permanent environment exclaiming to the rest of the world that they exist, that even though their
voices may be lost before politicians, parent, and peers they are real and the spraypaint is proof of this.
This form of graffiti is easily passed off as mere vandalism and considered an annoyance to our
society but when viewed with more compassion, it becomes clearer how important of an outlet this
form of graffiti is. Especially for today s youth (a generation that often feels insignificant) it is
psychologically important for them to have solid, material evidence of their own existence. Correlated
with identity based graffiti is another type called tagging. Tagging refers to types of graffiti that range
from stylized signature [tags] to mural size [pieces] that elaborately blend fanciful script, cartoon
characters and messages with the artist s street name (Beaty 43). This is a questionable form of
expression for it does not actually exhibit a need for acknowledgment but rather a recreational
engagement, an act of boldly testing the boundaries of the law in

Internal And External Factors That Affect The Core...
Professional football clubs need revenue. It is vital to the financial survival of a club as they have
ultimately become a business. Money is a vital necessity to enable the club to function. From paying
ground rent to the funding of the youth system and to even signing players for the clubs, it is
fundamental that a club is making a profit. The owners of the clubs will want to see profits being
made otherwise the club will eventually no longer be able to function. In this assignment I will be
exploring the ways in which Internal and external factors have an impact on the core revenues of
Clubs and how clubs themselves can potentially help put the factors in their favour. Topics such as
Fans and their behaviour and Player conduct on and off the pitch will be explored. Things that can
occur which clubs have little or no power over such as a major political shift which can affect a clubs
income will also be covered. One of the most obvious ways a club can make money is through ticket
sales. Supporters of the clubs in question and also neutral spectators will all pay the club to watch the
match. To ensure that the club continues to hold or expand its fan base the club will have to be
somewhat successful in its competitive competitions. Clubs who are less competitive in their
competitions will generally have less of a following than a more dominant club. Another way to bring
in fans is to also give them a good match day experience. Catering, comfort and ease of access

Why Women Still Can t Have It All
Anyone Can Have It All Sooner or later in life, we will inevitably face the question that asks if we
have it all. One may respond with a question: What does it all mean? According to the article Why
Women Still Can t Have It All, author Anne Marie Slaughter defines it all as work family balance
(678). It means to have both career and family at the same time. And the consensus of our society has
agreed with her definition of it all. We live in a society where we are raised to grow up to have a
career and a family. Correspondingly, we will likely raise our children with the same tenet, and the
cycle repeats. Our society dictates that work family balance is what defining it all. However, not
everyone agrees with the society s or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is pleased because she has the power to achieve her it all by using her position to balance her
career and family. Likewise, in his article Why Men Still Can t Have It All, Richard Dorment feels
glad to be back in his office working rather than taking full advantage of his paternity leave. At work,
I had a purpose things needed to be done, people needed me to do them (Dorment 711). Dorment is an
editor at Esquire magazine. At work, he has purposes and is needed, whereas he feels his presence is
not necessarily needed and finds it to be boring at home (Dorment 711). Being needed and having able
to work for his purposes, he can have personal fulfillment. On the other hand, people who are not
contented are the ones that do not have personal satisfaction for their actions. For example, Slaughter
demonstrates this when she says, The flip side is the harder truth: having it all was not possible in
many types of jobs , including high government office at least not for very long (681). Her high
government position is very demanding of her time, therefore she has little time for her children.
Additionally, Dorment has his unpleasant experience as well. This used to annoy me why do I even
bother? (Dorment 706). It is a comment Dorment has regarding his wife refolding the clothes after he
has folded them. I would sympathize with him. A woman I knew asked me to go with her to her
daughter s

John Montague Expresses His Themes In A Clear And Precise...
John Montague expresses his themes in a clear and precise fashion
You have been asked by your local radio station to give a talk on the poetry of John Montague. Write
out the text of the talk you would deliver in response to the above title. You should refer to both style
and subject matter. Support the points you make by reference to the poetry on your course.
Good evening listeners and welcome to our Friday night poetry segment, Poetry Aloud. Tonight we
will explore the works of the famous northern Irish poet, John Montague. As anyone familiar with his
work would know, Montague expresses his themes in a clear and precise fashion and that very notion
is what we will be proving tonight. Montague s poems include the themes of childhood, ... Show more

The poem highlights the beauty and sensuality of nature. He uses the theme of nature to explore the
pleasure he feels whilst taking in the sights and smells of nature. Montague uses broad vowel sounds
to create assonance in the first stanza. This creates euphony and a sort of verbal music, possibly
representing the noise of the river and the theme of nature.
In The Locket, Montague expresses the theme of memory clearly and precisely, as it is written in
memory of his recently deceased, estranged mother. It documents Montagues resentment of his mother
s rejection of him and the pain he felt at having to grow up without her love: Sing a last song for the
lady who has gone fertile source of guilt and pain . The poet uses a rhyming couplet to begin the first
stanza. This gives the stanza a song like style that is in juxtaposition with the sardonic, tongue in
cheek tone. When he grew older he sought her out again and tried desperately to win her over but as
she grows fond of him, she tells him not to come again. In the final stanza, there is a twist as, after her
death, Montague discovers that she wore a locket containing a baby picture of him, beneath her
clothes at all times. Although this does confuse him i.e. mysterious blessing , it does provide him with
some closure as he realises she was guilty about her inability to love him. Similarly, The Cage
expresses the memory of

Tree Thoughts Research Paper
Tree Thoughts In the early 1950s when I was a tyke of five or six, in my backyard with no sand box or
swing set, grew a cherry tree probably planted in the 1930s by our home s first owners. One of its
major limbs had been sawed off. In spite of being an amputee, its remaining branches of dark green
serrated leaves stretched to five or seven feet higher than the flat roofed garage it stood next to. It
produced an ample crop, maybe twenty five quarts, of sour cherries which ripened rapidly in the
middle of summer there in Canton, Ohio. Birds liked those red cherries as much as we did. More often
than not we picked them before the robins began snacking on them. My mom had grown up on a farm
about fifty miles east of Canton and knew how to bake a cherry pie. Starting from scratch, using lard
or Crisco in her recipe, guaranteed her crust would be crisp and flaky. My parents grew up when
canning fruits and vegetables was more the norm than not. Their generation valued thriftiness. As their
first born I was a shy, inquisitive child. My usual summer attire was blue jeans turned up three or four
inches, and a colorful, striped tee shirt. When I was older I was told, I acted grown up because I had a
serious air about me. Like trees, though, I thrived in the sunshine. After just a few minutes of being in
the sun, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

relocating all those acres of orchards to the Central Valley. That too is unknowable. Perhaps, that was
part of a natural geometric progression that makes sense only from a very, very high

  • 2. NAPOLEON’S INFLUENCE ON MODERN WESTERN MILITARY ARMIES Essay NAPOLEON S INFLUENCE ON MODERN WESTERN MILITARY ARMIES History 100, Staff Group A, CGSC Class 14 001 27 March 2014 1 Throughout history, military leaders have immortalized their legacies by vanquishing their enemies in the battlefield against overwhelming odds. Soldiers and historians have revered their accomplishments by studying their mastery in the art of warfare with the hopes mimicking their accomplishments. Of them all, Napoleon Bonaparte is considered the best military leader in the history of the Western World and has been the most influential with the development of modern day Western armies. According to Knox, military revolutions are changes in the nature and purpose of war itself. 1 Napoleon s military tactics and strategy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John A. Geoffrey Parker (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2005), 189. 3 the control of constantly larger and more widely dispersed forces. 5 According to Lynn, by subdividing his army into corps, Napoleon enhanced command and control. It improved logistics, since several corps operating along separate lines of advance could supply themselves more easily than could a single large army operating along a single route. 6 In addition to the forming of corps and divisions, Napoleon created brigade and army levels of commands. This unique military organizational structure allowed him to effectively move his large armies and outmaneuver his enemies. Like the French, the U.S. Army s military organizational structure consists of armies, corps, divisions, brigades, and battalions. The only exception is the regional commands that it uses. Each command level organization consists of a robust staff that assists commanders with developing plans and executing orders. This organizational structure provides an efficient method of commanding and controlling from the lowest to the highest level of commands. The transformation of the French military organizational structure provided better command and control for large armies. However, its use of combined arms allowed the French to annihilate their enemies in the battlefield. The French had pioneered the use of combat division, combining ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her strongest argument according to her essay would be the continuation of society since at one point in the world, there was a low population. In addition, as concluded by many scientists, we could stop having children and still be able to survive with the people and resources that we have. Since this is her main reason for the argument, she is using Natural Law Theory for her explanation. She believes if there is another reason to establish a marriage, it would ruin the reputation of a marriage. Clinician time lost due to no shows is unrecoverable. Because of the unpredictable nature of appointment nonadherence, providers schedule gaps cannot be filled with other patients. Since the no shows then to occur at spotty intervals, creating short periods of downtime, it is even difficult for providers to fill the time with administrative tasks. Adherence rates were significantly higher for the 2009 and 2010 samples than for the 2008 sample (Sims, 2012, p. 161). The results of this research is significant when it comes to try to bring the maximum amount of money to the clinic. The more patients that adhere to the appointment, the more money the clinic brings in. Short message service is a low cost tool that could be used to create higher adherence rates. In England alone, a 25% to 28% reduction in missed outpatient appointments would translate to national cost savings of more than $245 million per year. Short message service encourages patients to show up to their scheduled appointments. Another significant study was Maxwell s study that examined effectiveness of reminder systems on appointment adherence rates. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of reminder systems on appointment adherence rates within a clinic. According to Maxwell from a daily list of patients scheduling appointments, patients who verbally consented to participate in the study were randomly assigned to receive a phone reminder, mailed reminder, or no reminder (control group). The three groups consisted of (1) patients receiving an automated telephone reminder of their appointment the day prior to the actual appointment, (2) patients receiving a postcard reminder within 5 days prior to the actual appointment, and (3) patients receiving no reminder (p. 507). • 5. Controversy Over the United States Providing Developmental... Throughout history and present day times, many countries such as Germany, France, and Canada have provided assistance and aid to underdeveloped countries to help alleviate poverty. The United States itself issues aid to developing countries which include Israel, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Ethiopia; this has been an American practice since 1947 after World War II. During the time period from 1947 to 1949 the United States, under the Marshall Plan, provided both financial and technical assistance to Europe and Asia after the war. As a result, Europe was rebuilt both politically and economically. Today the United States continues to provide aid to underdeveloped countries, helping them evolve and strengthen their economy. Many Americans believe that America is doing the right thing in issuing aid, while others hold the opinion that the United States should not issue aid, and that the issue of money to developing countries needs to stop. On one side of the issue the supporters of developmental aid believe that the United States is doing more than a great job by offering economic assistance to countries that need help to develop. These individuals are aware of the unfortunate poverty levels in many countries abroad. They believe that it is the duty of the American people to help reduce the poverty levels in countries in which people live with less than a dollar a day. In fact, some supporters believe that the U.S. is not offering enough support to the poorer countries. Many have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The American Industrial Revolution The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around dangerous machines at a young age. After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over triple the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase steel production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. As a result of having more steel, more railroads and buildings can be built for cheaper, improving transportation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Human Of Human Visual System Facial Recognition Abstract One of the most impressive skills of the human visual system is our ability to identify an individual from a brief glance at their face, which will distinguish that certain individual from hundreds of others one knows. Despite the variations in the appearance of each face as it changes in expression and hairstyle. The ability to recognize human faces is so important in that the brain appears to have an area solely devoted to the task. The fusiform gyrus is the area responsible for this. Brain studies consistently find that this region of the temporal lobe of the brain becomes active when people look at faces. Skeptics have countered that these studies show only an assumption, not proof, that activity in this area is essential for face recognition. Thanks to the willingness of an intrepid patient, a new study provides evidence that neurons in this area help humans recognize faces, and not other body parts or objects. The act of recognizing a face is actually quite complex. Faces must be accurately recognized in any condition, even while moving. But unlike other objects, faces are intimately involved in communication, and our brains must be able to extract a tremendous amount of subtle detail from just a glance. So while some of the issues involved in face recognition are the same as for recognizing any object, other issues are unique to faces. There is a deep controversy in face recognition ... • 9. Corvus Scavenger Ravens (Corvus corax) are known to be scavengers and there have been observations that they may have developed a foraging strategy that involves grey wolves (Canis lupis). Henrich et al. A kleptoparasitic relationship means that ravens steal the prey that the wolves have caught. Hayes et al. The book was a compilation of knowledge that became the center of mathematical teaching for 2000 years. Probably Euclid first proved no results in The Elements but the organization of the material and its exposition are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using earlier textbooks as he writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions, which are never used such as that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. This book first began the book by giving the definition of five postulates. The first three are based upon constructions. For example, the first one is that a straight line can be drawn between two points. These three postulates also describe lines, circles, and the existence of points and the possible existence of other geometric objects. The fourth and fifth postulates are written in a different nature. Postulate four states that all right angles are equal. The fifth one is very famous. All of the animals are personified because rabbits don t actually talk, but the writer Richard Adams made them seem almost human. This is where it comes from! I know now something very bad! Some terrible thing coming closer and closer (Adams 7). This is foreshadowing because it gives an idea of what is going to happen in the future of the story and later in the book something terrible did happen. Foreshadowing makes the story interesting and can keep the reader interested. There are also many different similes used throughout the story. The light, full and smooth, lay like a gold rind over the turf (Adams 123) I can feel the danger like a wire round my neck like a wire Hazel, help? (Adams 13). • 38. Dog Parks Benefits I strongly agree a dog parks benefits all. I think that every state should have a dog park. Dogs need to exercise. You cant walk your dog without a leash in public areas. Plus it would raise property values. If a dog doesnt exercise it becomes lazy. The dog can also become unhealthy. Most of the time dogs can t just run around any where they want. If they had a park then no one would have to worry about the dangers of someone being bitten. If dogs are always house bond it can cause bad behavior. It can even cause for the dog to attack the owner. Which does nt sound like a good thing. If I were a dog owner i would nt want my dog on the leash all the time. Winnie and Isabel grew close with a mother and daughter named Kate and Molly respectively that lived opposite to them however that was short lived as Kate and Molly moved out of state. This therapy will be beneficial for Winnie s parents as well as they will able to give importance and be supportive of her coping skills. This in turn will allow Winnie to be determined to overcome the fear and this can positively improve the quality of their family relationship. Children could form unrealistic and exaggerated scenarios and ideas about the dangers of being alone. Winnie in this case maybe fails to differentiate reality from the thoughts of something bad happening to her mother. CBT will allow the therapist together with Winnie to dissect these thoughts and see if they have any logic behind it. To elaborate on that, the therapist could ask Winnie several questions that would help her realize that the actual risk of something bad happening to her mother is lower that what she had imagined or feared (Meichenbaum, 1977)). • 40. The Glass Ceiling, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson Faces of Women The glass ceiling is something still very present in today s society. Women in the workforce are constantly trying to break through barriers set by society to break away from stereotypes. Many women work twice as hard and still get paid significantly less than their male co workers. They experience sex typing from a young age being pushed to study more feminine occupations, such as nursing. While on the other hand men are encouraged to seek positions of power and leadership. If a woman decides to choose an occupation that demands the use of intellectual thinking, they are given boundaries to which they are limited. Women are seen as the weaker sex and have been severely over diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or any other type of mental illness. We see this issue addressed in Virginia Woolf s Professions for Women and Susanna Kaysen s memoir Girl, Interrupted . Women are taught to that they need to display certain behavior and uphold a perfect appearance in order to be taken seriously in society. Charlotte Perkins Stetson uses the art of writing to bring us along the emotional ride of a woman who s true feelings were labeled unreliable in her story The Yellow Wall Paper . For decades women have struggled with being treated as subordinates and this continues today. We are able to see the unjust treatment of women reflected in their salaries, promotions, and general treatment in the workforce, specifically the medical field. There has been much ... The United States Involvement During The Vietnam War The United States involvement in the Vietnam War primarily between the years 1964 and 1968 were brought about by the many hostilities and frustrations predominately based on issues of the Cold War, communism, the Policy of Containment, and the Domino Theory. When the United States first got involved in the Vietnam War in the first half of the 1960s, problems had been ongoing for quite sometime and were continuing to increasingly get worse. Throughout the period of U.S. involvement in the war, there were many supporters and non supporters that included various political groups, interest groups, students, Civil Rights groups, and the military. Through all of the issues of U.S. involvement up to the major events that took place during the time period of 1964 1968, a great deal happened and the U.S. was unsuccessful in attaining the goal that it wished to achieve in Vietnam; ending the reign of communism. Arising out of issues originating in the Cold War and primarily the stopping of the spread of communism, the Vietnam War had a lasting impact that would never be forgotten. Many Americans believed that the containment doctrine, which was devised by George Kennan, was the key doctrine that got the United States involved in the Vietnam War to begin with; however, others say that no president really decided to go to wage war in Vietnam but instead became involved because of increasing commitment over many years (Brinkley, 843). • 43. Why Advertising Alcohol Is Destroying Public Well-Being Essay Brenna Clarine Mrs. Vanwormer C.P. Reading Writing 6 May 2016 Why Advertising Alcohol Is Destroying Public Well Being When I was nine years old, I remember seeing the most delectable, mouthwatering commercial on television. It was for beer. Growing up in a family that did not drink, I never thought beer could look so appetizing. The beverage was everywhere I looked except for in my own fridge. Not only adults, but kids and teens everywhere are being bombarded with alcohol advertisements. Many of these youths choose to succumb to these ads and end up with destructive drinking habits. Not only is alcohol damaging to youth but also to adults. According to a U.S. study, adults were found to put themselves at severe risk of harm after having more than four drinks in one session (Medew). This number can change depending on the gender, size, athleticism, and other factors of the consumer. Although some may say that alcohol is not too damaging if drunk responsibly, the fact that alcohol is a direct route to damaging organs like the liver, heart, and pancreas and harming the brain is a red flag (NIHSeniorHealth). To whatever extent, alcohol weakens the brain s control over movement, speech, memory, and especially judgement, which often leads to impulsive behavior and other dangerous activities (NIHSeniorHealth). There are plenty of harmful side effects of drinking, so the obvious solution to preserving the nation s well being is to not encourage it. One quote by a Seattle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Pros And Cons Of Insanity Defense The insanity defense, used when a defendant commits a crime but is mentally incapable of understanding the consequence of his actions, is a controversial plea that has been in existence for several centuries. The insanity defense uses the idea that the defendant committed the crime, but due to the lack of mental instability, was unable to understand that their actions are wrong. The insanity defense dates back to the 19th century. Daniel M Naghten was a woodworker who thought that he was a target of a conspiracy with the pope and the British Prime Minister, Robert Peel. He went down to 10 Downing Street planning to attack Robert Peel, but instead shot and killed his secretary. During his trial, the jury found Daniel M Naghten delusional and ... Instead of getting put up for the electric chair, the defendant could plead insanity be admitted to an asylum, whether the person is found guilty of the crime or not. Just by pleading insane, it promotes an atmosphere of guilt almost instantly.Instead of trying to argue facts, the person has to prove to the defendant that their actions were wrong but because of his or her mental state, they are innocent. Societies punish those who do not have the mental capacity to know right from wrong. The insanity defense can also lessen or mean no jail time. Instead of being sent to jail for committing a crime, the defendant will be sent to an asylum. The chances of this plea working in cases is slim to none because the plea has become harder to get away with. There are all these positive things about the insanity defense, but there are equally as negative things. The insanity defense can also increase trial costs. If the defendant tries to plead guilty, then the cost of the trial would go up, due to hiring a specialist to determine the level of existing conditions. The insanity defense is not implemented in all court systems. Some court system do not use the insanity defense. The insanity defense can be hard to prove sometimes. (Source ... • 45. Essay on Graffiti as an Artform Graffiti as an Artform The value of any message or work of art, whether it is hanging on the wall of a gallery or a subway, lies on the intensity of the artist s or vandal s beliefs. Graffiti is an uncertain issue in respect to its virtue. While the voice of the individual must never be lost in a society of shouts growing larger and louder every second; graffiti is such a public medium that its integrity must be of great concern. Graffiti is a vast wasteland of indefinite opinions. Foremost graffiti is illegal and a form of vandalism, it invades peoples privacy and destroys their property. However, graffiti can be a means by which one may permanently express one s self. It has the potential to convey a powerful, relevant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even legitimate complaints about the behavior of some individuals should not be expressed in this manner, they are to be judged within the walls of a courtroom not on the walls of a bathroom. Another reason why people engage in graffiti is to shape their identities. They wish to leave a mark in a permanent environment exclaiming to the rest of the world that they exist, that even though their voices may be lost before politicians, parent, and peers they are real and the spraypaint is proof of this. This form of graffiti is easily passed off as mere vandalism and considered an annoyance to our society but when viewed with more compassion, it becomes clearer how important of an outlet this form of graffiti is. Especially for today s youth (a generation that often feels insignificant) it is psychologically important for them to have solid, material evidence of their own existence. Correlated with identity based graffiti is another type called tagging. Tagging refers to types of graffiti that range from stylized signature [tags] to mural size [pieces] that elaborately blend fanciful script, cartoon characters and messages with the artist s street name (Beaty 43). This is a questionable form of expression for it does not actually exhibit a need for acknowledgment but rather a recreational engagement, an act of boldly testing the boundaries of the law in ... • 46. Internal And External Factors That Affect The Core... Professional football clubs need revenue. It is vital to the financial survival of a club as they have ultimately become a business. Money is a vital necessity to enable the club to function. From paying ground rent to the funding of the youth system and to even signing players for the clubs, it is fundamental that a club is making a profit. The owners of the clubs will want to see profits being made otherwise the club will eventually no longer be able to function. In this assignment I will be exploring the ways in which Internal and external factors have an impact on the core revenues of Clubs and how clubs themselves can potentially help put the factors in their favour. Topics such as Fans and their behaviour and Player conduct on and off the pitch will be explored. Things that can occur which clubs have little or no power over such as a major political shift which can affect a clubs income will also be covered. One of the most obvious ways a club can make money is through ticket sales. Supporters of the clubs in question and also neutral spectators will all pay the club to watch the match. To ensure that the club continues to hold or expand its fan base the club will have to be somewhat successful in its competitive competitions. Clubs who are less competitive in their competitions will generally have less of a following than a more dominant club. Another way to bring in fans is to also give them a good match day experience. • 47. Why Women Still Can t Have It All Anyone Can Have It All Sooner or later in life, we will inevitably face the question that asks if we have it all. One may respond with a question: What does it all mean? According to the article Why Women Still Can t Have It All, author Anne Marie Slaughter defines it all as work family balance (678). It means to have both career and family at the same time. And the consensus of our society has agreed with her definition of it all. We live in a society where we are raised to grow up to have a career and a family. Correspondingly, we will likely raise our children with the same tenet, and the cycle repeats. Our society dictates that work family balance is what defining it all. However, not everyone agrees with the society s or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is pleased because she has the power to achieve her it all by using her position to balance her career and family. Likewise, in his article Why Men Still Can t Have It All, Richard Dorment feels glad to be back in his office working rather than taking full advantage of his paternity leave. At work, I had a purpose things needed to be done, people needed me to do them (Dorment 711). Dorment is an editor at Esquire magazine. At work, he has purposes and is needed, whereas he feels his presence is not necessarily needed and finds it to be boring at home (Dorment 711). Being needed and having able to work for his purposes, he can have personal fulfillment. On the other hand, people who are not contented are the ones that do not have personal satisfaction for their actions. For example, Slaughter demonstrates this when she says, The flip side is the harder truth: having it all was not possible in many types of jobs , including high government office at least not for very long (681). Her high government position is very demanding of her time, therefore she has little time for her children. Additionally, Dorment has his unpleasant experience as well. He uses the theme of nature to explore the pleasure he feels whilst taking in the sights and smells of nature. Montague uses broad vowel sounds to create assonance in the first stanza. This creates euphony and a sort of verbal music, possibly representing the noise of the river and the theme of nature. In The Locket, Montague expresses the theme of memory clearly and precisely, as it is written in memory of his recently deceased, estranged mother. It documents Montagues resentment of his mother s rejection of him and the pain he felt at having to grow up without her love: Sing a last song for the lady who has gone fertile source of guilt and pain . The poet uses a rhyming couplet to begin the first stanza. This gives the stanza a song like style that is in juxtaposition with the sardonic, tongue in cheek tone. When he grew older he sought her out again and tried desperately to win her over but as she grows fond of him, she tells him not to come again. In the final stanza, there is a twist as, after her death, Montague discovers that she wore a locket containing a baby picture of him, beneath her clothes at all times. Although this does confuse him i.e. mysterious blessing , it does provide him with some closure as he realises she was guilty about her inability to love him. Similarly, The Cage expresses the memory of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Tree Thoughts Research Paper Tree Thoughts In the early 1950s when I was a tyke of five or six, in my backyard with no sand box or swing set, grew a cherry tree probably planted in the 1930s by our home s first owners. One of its major limbs had been sawed off. In spite of being an amputee, its remaining branches of dark green serrated leaves stretched to five or seven feet higher than the flat roofed garage it stood next to. It produced an ample crop, maybe twenty five quarts, of sour cherries which ripened rapidly in the middle of summer there in Canton, Ohio. Birds liked those red cherries as much as we did. More often than not we picked them before the robins began snacking on them. My mom had grown up on a farm about fifty miles east of Canton and knew how to bake a cherry pie. Starting from scratch, using lard or Crisco in her recipe, guaranteed her crust would be crisp and flaky. My parents grew up when canning fruits and vegetables was more the norm than not. Their generation valued thriftiness. As their first born I was a shy, inquisitive child. My usual summer attire was blue jeans turned up three or four inches, and a colorful, striped tee shirt. When I was older I was told, I acted grown up because I had a serious air about me. Like trees, though, I thrived in the sunshine. After just a few minutes of being in the sun, ...
