The Shah s Adaptation And Endorsement Of Islam
Throughout the history of present day Iran it has been contested whether the Shi i ulama or the Shah
are the logical leaders of the community. It is true that the ulama have gained control of Iran, and that
Islam changed much in Iran, but in some respects continuity from the past was far stronger than the
new concepts (Frye 36) due to the fact that the power of the Shah remained for hundreds of years after
the introduction of Islam. The Iranian people have a long history of traditions and culture and even
when Islam spread throughout the country it was adapted to include some of the Iranian traditions.
The most significant example of this is the Shah s adaptation and endorsement of Islam. The long
history, tradition, and the decline of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The office of the Shah has had such an impact that one may find in the literature and in the art of Iran
evidence for a powerful and continuing charisma of kingship, even through great upheavals and
changes in the history of the land (Frye 36). The Shahs in pre Islamic Persia established legitimacy by
charisma and by being a religious leader because the people believed Ahura Mazda confers on the
king charisma and special wisdom. The king s duty was to enforce the law, social order, and
righteousness, however if social unrest occurred, it was a sign that the dynasty had lost divine favor.
The Iranian theory of kingship lasted for a long periods of time because the Shahs who ruled were
charismatic and successful at establishing legitimacy, and if not they were able to be disposed of by
the religious priests and nobles. The Shahs in post Islamic Iran needed to learn to establish legitimacy
in a region where the people were disposing of Zoroastrian beliefs and converting to the Shī a
ideology of Islam. The Shah that managed to merge traditional role of a Shah and the religious aspects
of Islam was Shāh Ismāʿil. This Shah needed to establish his legitimacy and did so in two important
and relevant ways. First, Shāh Ismāʿil used the the ancient Persian concept of kingship which was
expressed in the concept of the king being the shadow of God on Earth because he believed that he
was divine and had the right to rule because of

Acoustic Spaces And Ambient Noise Levels
Introduction
A range of observations were conducted to assess acoustic spaces in terms of their characteristics and
ambient noise levels. Using a Digitech QM 1589 (see figure one) three studies were measured in order
to successfully account for characteristic behaviours and differentiate between ambient noise levels.
These studies where assessed under A and C weightings and in fast and slow settings. A weighting
follows the frequency sensitivity of the human ear at low

frequency sensitivity of the human ear at very high noise levels (Hear Forever, 2013). Measurement
One is the sound pressure level of 8 acoustic environments that where examined to establish the
quietest space possible, maintaining a reliable and consistent source of results. Measurement Two
follows the assessment of Clarendon Street, a busy road; involving the observations of cars, trucks and
trams that share the road. Measurement Three is the analysis between A and C weighted testing of
pink noise from a single speaker repeated at 1 and 4 metres validating the application of the Inverse
Square Law.

Daoism And Confucianism Essay
Daoism, Confucianism, Shintoism There are many religions that originated in Asia. These religions
that we are focusing on include Daoism, Confucianism, and Shintoism. The religions of Daoism and
Confucianism mainly originated in China, but like most religions, have now spread all throughout
Asia to many different cultures. Shintoism on the other hand, originated in Japan and like the other
two has also spread all throughout Asia. In this essay I will briefly discuss a few of the main points of
each of these religions and ways of life.
The first religion I will talk about is Daoism. Daoism seems to go pretty hand in hand with
Confucianism, both originating in China, but they obviously have a few differences too. Daoism
worships The Dao. Just like many other religions, their main person they worship isn t actually a
specific person but more so of a spiritual figure of worship. Daoism is a more relaxed religion
compared to Confucianism. The Daoist outlook is a very positive and accepting and joyful way of life.
Daoism also focuses a lot on the unknown and the metaphysical parts of life. This is a big difference
that distinguishes it from Confucianism, who does not value that as much. They do still accept the
metaphysical but do not necessarily value it or consider it of much importance. Daoism is ... Show

This religion is a study of the teachings of Confucius who was a widely known and popular Chinese
philosopher. To me Confucianism seems less like a religion, than it does more a way of life.
Confucianism has its own outlooks on basically everything, politically and spiritually. This is a pretty
unique religion. One main thing that Confucianism values is family and respecting your elders. This is
a common value found in a lot of religions but especially held high in this particular one. Overall,
Confucianism to me sounds like a way of life and culture, more than it does a

Desiderius Erasmus Research Paper
The desire to write grows with writing . Desiderius Erasmus was famous for
writing and he admired it much. This quote is referring to him because he
loved to write and when he wrote he gained more love for it. Desiderius Erasmus was a
known humanist who was the greatest scholar of the northern Renaissance. Desiderius Erasmus had an
important and interesting life and it all started during his early life. He was born October 27, 1469, to
Roger Gerard and Margaretha Rogerious in Rotterdam, Holland. He was the second illegitimate son of
Roger Gerard, his father, which whom was a priest. He went on as far to be the third highest class at

Thomas More, Erasmus and More became friends for life. John Colet quickened Erasmus thought to
be a primitive theologian, one who would expound scripture but not in a argumentative way of
scholastics but in the manner of Jerome and the other Church Fathers, the ones who lived in an age
when men still understood and practiced the classical art of rhetoric. The impassioned Colet brought
him to lecture on the Old Testament at Oxford, but the more paranoid he was made him not ready even
more. He went back to the Continent with a Latin copy of St. Paul s Epistles and the conviction that
ancient theology required mastery of Greek. By 1502 Erasmus had already settled in the university
town of Leuven which is now in Belgium and was reading Origen and St. Paul Greek. Erasmus urged
leaders to inject into the vitals, the teachings of Christ by studying and meditating on the scriptures
using a spiritual interpretation. He sailed for England in 1505 trying to find support for his studies, he
then found an opportunity to travel to Italy instead. He published many books using satirical dialogue
and an example of that is Julius Exclusus e coelis which was published in 1513 1514. In the end of his
finalized work the second edition of Erasmus New Testament (1519) replaced

The Importance Of Gadils
The use of collagen, alginate, and chitin fibers have increased in medical and surgical applications due
to the promotion of healing (Pillai, Paul, Sharma, 2009). When alginate fibers are used for wound
contact layers, the reaction between the alginate and the exuding wound forms a sodium calcium
alginate gel (Horrocks Anand). The gel is hydrophilic in nature, permeable to oxygen, and
impermeable to bacteria, and make a contribution to the creation of new tissue (Horrocks Anand).

Compression bandages are designed to exert a required amount of compression on the leg when
applied at a constant tension. They are used for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis,
leg ulceration (Partsch et al., 2008) . They are made of woven and contain cotton and elastomeric fiber
yarns or warp and weft knitted in both tubular and fully fashioned form (Partsch et al., 2008). Another
kind of bandages is called Orthopedic cushion bandages, mainly used under plaster casts and
compression bandages to provide padding, comfort (Rigby et al., 1997b). Nonwoven orthopedic

Fashion Marketing And Its Impact On Consumer s Design...
The concept of marketing is the action or business of bringing or sending a product or commodity to
the market. (Oxford English Dictionary) Fashion Marketing differs from the marketing of other goods
because of the uniqueness of the merchandise. According to the Parson s School of Design, fashion
marketing is the process of analyzing, developing, and marketing current fashion trends into sales
strategies. (IJMBT) In fashion marketing, consumers are the creators by virtue of their adoption and
rejection of new trends and styles. Furthermore, fashion is integral to the construction and
communication of one s social identity, helping to define the class, ethnicity, class, age, and the gender
of the wearer as a reflection of individuality. Fashion marketers must position products based on
consumer s design preference. Fashion advertisements have their own stylistic modes and spheres of
production and consumption, involving the interrelationship of word and image among other things.

Clinical Microsystem Assessment
A clinical microsystem is a small, interdependent group of people who work together regularly to
provide care for specific groups of patients (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, p.1). It is the goal
of this paper to discuss the findings of the Johnson Clinical Microsystem Assessment Tool to the
microsystem where I am employed on call, the Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD), HIV

The Effects Of Using Math Cooperative Learning Groups On A...
Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using math cooperative learning groups on a
second grade class at Cypress Cove Elementary School during the academic year of 2016 2017. This
chapter focuses on conceptual understanding and the effectiveness of cooperative learning groups in
math as well as the influence of group processing on achievement.
Making Connections in Math Cognitive development occurs when students use their current
knowledge of a subject s concepts and procedures to learn new material. Math is no different. Students
use what they already know as a foundation for learning new math skills. Teachers who understand
this aspect of cognitive development and know how to build on what their students already have
learned are effective educators (Sidney Alibali, 2015).
In a study of fifth and sixth graders being taught division by fractions, Sidney et al. (2015), found that
students drew on their past knowledge to understand new problems. Students used their prior
knowledge to activate the transfer of the new information.
The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning
Using differentiated instruction helps build existing knowledge and activates prior knowledge. Once
students have gained a deeper level of understanding, using cooperative learning groups is beneficial
because it enhances academic achievement, student attitudes, and student retention (Hsiung, 2012).
Cooperative learning also provides a natural

Life Cycle of a Plant, Dominant and Recessive Traits
Paragraph One: Description of the life cycle of a plant from seed to seed (information about the seed,
germination, growth, development, flower, pollination, fruit, seed; information is accurate)
The life cycle of a plant from seed to seed is not that complicated, it consists of a few steps. This all
starts with a seed. The first step is for the seed to germinate and turn into a seedling. Once the seedling
is formed, it will then grow into an adult plant with petals. These petals will then sprout to flowers,
which will produce fruits. The flowers will go to a process of fertilization called pollination, that s
when the pollen is moved from anthers to stigmas. Since the pollen contains sperm and it is passed on
to the ovules in the ovary, the sperm moves down to an ovule, which contains eggs. Fertilization then
happens when the sperm fuses with the egg in the ovule. The petals and stamens then fall away
creating a fruit. These fruits contain seeds, and once the plant has died, the seeds will fall to the
ground and repeat this cycle. So to summarize, the seed goes through a process called germination and
forms into a seedling, which then grows roots and forms true leaves. This plant continues to grow until
flowers are formed. The next step is a process called pollination and fertilization, which then forms a
fruit. The fruit will release the seeds and the process repeats.
Paragraph Two: Description of the purposes of the different parts of the plant

The Reality Of Television Programs
Today s television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over fifty
years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a
hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the
years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in
today s world. Because of today s TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look
like.
Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own
children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being
parents. The hit comedy Modern Family has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron.
They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as
well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. As Greg
Graffin wrote in his article Anarchy in the Tenth Grade It is also a shining example of how easy it is to
follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality which only motivates me to keep fighting
for originality. (3) This is seen on the show The Fosters , a girl named Callie is placed in a foster home
with a lesbian couple and their other adopted children. On this show the couple showed more love and
support than the previous foster homes she was placed in, that consisted of the usual

The Game Of Baseball Was Invented By Abner Doubleday Essay
The game of baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday, in 1839 177 years ago from today. Baseball
has been, and is still today, known as America s favorite pastime; additionally, due to its extensive
history and partaking it monumental events, it can as well serve as a great topic to use in a story or
poem. Poet Dale Ritterbusch, uses the game of baseball along with metaphors in his poem as a vehicle
to write about a more substantial subject in poetry, the Vietnam War. His poem, Behind the Plate , can
be simply over looked to one as just a poem about an overweight catcher; nonetheless, when closely
examined, it has a deeper meaning. Authors Michael Cocchiarale and Scott Emmert, both agree with
the statement that baseball is a great outlet for further analysis of a more important subject: Writers
have seen sports, particularly baseball, as a useful vehicle for cultural and epistemological analysis
(Cocchiarale). The poem, Behind the Plate , starts off with the line: Always the dumbest and fattest kid
played catcher (Ritterbusch, Behind ); however, Dale Ritterbusch chose to start this poem with that
statement for a reason it sets a tone for the rest of the poem to have a certain meaning. The fat catcher
is known to specifically represent America in the Vietnam War; the catcher is fat because, well, in
history catchers in baseball are often overweight. Additionally, in general one who is fat in sports
often has a disadvantage, even in the case of being a catcher, and

China And The Implementation Of Pinyin
Over Population in China and the implementation of Pinyin In response to massive over population in
China, the Chinese over has taken drastic measures to reduce the nation s population. The first step
that was implemented was the one child policy also known as; pinyin. Pinyin is the one child
limitation on the majority of families that live in the People s Republic of China. It is enacted under
the official family planing policy. It limits the number of children marries urban couples to have to
one. The exceptions only apply to those who are: ethic minorities, rural families who depend on
children for farming and, parents without any siblings themselves. The Chinese government has given
an official statement saying that roughly to 35 to 40 percent of the Chinese population falls under the
one child rule. The higher ups in the government bureaucracy who mostly live in Macau and some
parts of Hong Kong are not affected by this policy as well. The policy was brought up by the
government in 1978 but, was officially enacted to first born children in 1979. Like today, China was
dealing with many social, economic, and environmental problems. Pinyin was a response to alleviate
these problems. Chinese authorities claimed that pinyin has prevented around 250 to 300 million
births from the time of its implementation in 1979 to the year 2010(SOURE CITATION). There is still
controversy within and outside of china for use of this policy. Because of the manner that policy was

Comparing Christian Beliefs In Islam And Christianity
Muslims and Christians share the belief that both God and Jesus exist or have existed. Although the
two religions accept this, their view points are quite different. Muslims believe that Jesus was a
prophet, while Christians believe Jesus was not only the son of God, but also the messiah. Both
religions believe in the same God, but Christians believe that God is part of the holy trinity. Muslims
do not accept this as part of their faith. Despite how similar these two religions are, Muslims and
Christians continue to argue about their beliefs. Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God,
given birth from the virgin Mary, and was sent to save us from our sins. Part of the Christian faith is
after Jesus spread his message and performed various miracles, he was crucified, died, and then was
resurrected three days later. This belief creates the Christian religion in a sense, because without Jesus
resurrecting with fulfillment of the scriptures, he could not come back to his disciples and more

Muslims believe God as being one almighty power, who does not share his divinity. This directly goes

prophet who performs miracles and delivers God s message, while Christians believe Jesus was the

junior high, grades 5 through 8. All students enter into High School for grades 9 12 and if they are

Canadians have taken similar measures to deal with drugs in schools. The rate of drug use among

New Liberalism Essay
New Liberalism
Old liberalism, otherwise know as classical or Gladstonian liberalism was centred around the
fundamental rights of the individual. It was an ideology that the state should have little to no
intervention in people s lives and in the economy. It relied heavily upon the notion of laissez faire, and
the Victorian mindset of self help. Thrift was one of these ideas. It was the theory that any family
could support itself if that income was managed wisely, and a pension could be saved for. The key
pillars of old liberalism was low taxes and low state intervention. This was because they believed that
the people should be able to spend their money as they wised, and not be forced to send it ... Show

Towards the end of the century this was coming into question. Other European nations were
industrialising and eating into Britain s profits. There was a thought among the British public that as
long as the economy was growing, eventually prosperity would filter down to the lower classes. But as
the economy began to shrink, according to Lee it eroded the attractions of industrial growth as a
panacea for society s ills. Victorian notions were rapidly becoming out of date and viewed as wrong,
not only economically, but morally as well. In London and York, studies showed that a third of people
lived in poverty as a direct result of simply not having a large enough income to cover their basic
needs, while thousands more lived in poverty due to inadequate education to manage there finances.
Laissez faire was being proven to be out dated in Birmingham where the conservative mayor Joseph
Chamberlain had shown that local government taking control for and organised public amenities and
facilities could benefit the community as a whole. Not only did this destroy laissez faire, but also it
was an attack by the Tories on Liberal values. In the 1880 s socialism was starting to gain ground as

Grief In Hamlet
Everyone is going to lose someone they love at some point in life. It is simply the way life works, and
how each individual handles the loss can change everything. If a person doesn t handle the loss well it
can ruin everything, tearing their life apart. On the opposite end of that a death could just be a small
set back in life before moving forward. The grief is too much for some to bear; they go mad, unable to
operate without this person in their life. It all depends on how a person reacts to the loss, in the case of
Hamlet from Shakespeare s tragedy Hamlet, he was entirely consumed by grief. He slipped into
madness because he was unable to let go of his father s death. Hamlet s problems all begin with the
death of his father, King Hamlet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

revenge. This mission becomes Hamlet s only thought and drive, he states that he will wipe away
trivial fond records ... and [the ghost s] commandment all alone shall live (1.5.97 102). This is where
Hamlet takes the turn from bad to worse. Because he never let go of his father s death Hamlet is a
dead man walking, but now he has a drive for revenge that keeps him moving. It becomes Hamlet s
purpose in life. When the ghost visits him again, the ghost tell him Do not forget this visitation Is but
to whet thy almost blunted purpose (3.4.112 113). This is especially interesting because unlike the first

ghost. There are two possibilities with this, the first being that the ghost only appeared to Hamlet. This
offers very little and would simply mean the ghost worries that Hamlet is forgetting his mission, but
the second choice is far more entertaining. The other possibility is that this appearance of the ghost is
a figment of Hamlet s crazed mind. This would mean that crazy Hamlet is forgetting his purpose in

Empirical Evidence Bearing On Capital Asset Pricing Theories
This study explores the (troubling) empirical evidence bearing on capital asset pricing theories.
General formulas for the coefficient on beta and it standard error are derived, which show that the
outcomes of cross sectional tests have no causal relation to the pricing models. If a test refutes a
model, this could be because the model is misspecified or because poor proxies for true expected
returns and betas are used. Simulation and calibration results suggest that realized returns are a much
poorer proxy than estimated betas are. The noise in realized returns typically inflates the estimated
standard error, with drastic effects on the statistical power. Inferences based on ex ante returns are
more powerful but suffer from a serious size problem. JEL: G12, C31, C52. I. Introduction One
should hardly have to tell to financial economists that the noise in the data they use is critically
important: garbage in, garbage out. And yet the information surprises in returns are the neglected child
in the house of empirical finance, a neglect described by Elton (1999, p.1218) in the following terms:
When I first entered the profession, anyone using realized returns as expected returns made the
argument that in the long run we should get what we expect. Even this weak defense is no longer used
and researchers generally treat realized returns as expected returns in their tests without any
qualifications. In this paper, I shall argue that the information surprises in returns, along

Difference Between Medieval And Renaissance Architecture
Renaissance Revisited
An investigation into the aesthetics and philosophy reflected in Italian Renaissance architecture
Introduction
The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own
civilization. Frank Lloyd Wright
The architectural legacy of the past is one full of astonishing, miraculously constructed buildings and
urban spaces. Great books on architectural history and its dissemination can be found everywhere, and
history of architecture courses offered to students are a reflection of our continuous amazement with
architectural principles and manifestations all around the world. It interests us to see what civilizations
of the past established. This is very well reflected in Frank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is always being posed in the light of the Dark Ages or Middle Ages, of which the name already
suggests the cloud of insignificance it is surrounded by according to many intellectuals. However,
before we can distinguish this superior Renaissance philosophy from earlier philosophy, it needs to be
established that medieval and Renaissance philosophy do relate to each other and are part of a
continuous process of increasing intellectual insights into the world and all its phenomena
(Copenhaver and Schmitt, 1992). Both medieval and Renaissance philosophy looked at heritage from
their ancestors, and it is not true that medieval philosophy completely disregarded the ancients
(Copenhaver and Schmitt, 1992). Rather, they treated the past differently, focusing on ancient
philosophy being a companion to theology and the word of God. There were various important
developments responsible for the different approach Renaissance philosophy took and its spread
throughout Europe, but the most important one can be said to be the introduction of the printing press
by Gutenberg in 1440 (Eisenstein, 1980). This development provided a rapid increase of availability
of texts to intellectuals and (Eisenstein, 1980). This technological development, along with the
rediscovery and recovery of ancient philosophical works in the late Middle Ages were responsible for
the rise of Renaissance philosophy and the renewed interest in classical writings which would later
become the basis of Renaissance philosophy (Stump, 1982; Copenhaver and Schmitt,

Serial Killer Psychology
The mind of a serial killer has been researched for years and years. Since the earliest serial killers to
the most recent, everyone wants to know what goes on in a serial killers mind. Do they just kill
because they want to see people suffer or deep down is there something wrong with them? It could be
that they are working for the devil as some people may say. It may just be that these people are
downright crazy and killing is what they want to do. A lot of things in the mind can force a serial killer
to kill, whether it is the mental disorder they are suffering from, the feelings they have (lust, glory,
rage, et cetera), or it is the history of mental, physical, and sexual abuse they have gone through.
Although it may not seem like it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it is something that happened or something imagined. Rage serial killers are probably the
most dangerous because you can never predict when they are going to kill. Anger is built up over time
until someone decides they are going to grab a gun and kill. You can never predict that even if you
tried. People that kill for lust, glory, and rage are probably the most dangerous because most of them

Examples Of High-Class Conflict In The Great Gatsby
The cynosures of the 1920s were people in the high class society . They had abundant amounts of
money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in The Great
Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this through rich versus
poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts. In this novel, rich are
treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really sees this conflict is when
Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly asks, Do you want to hear about
the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? She then goes on to explain that he can not smell because of his old job,
which was for lower class people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tom is a rich man who lives in East Egg, whereas George is a poor man who lives at a gas station in
the Valley of Ashes. Since the rich only marry rich, and Gatsby was not available at the time, Daisy
Buchanan marries Tom and keeps her title as a rich individual. On the other end of things Myrtle
Wilson, who lives in the Valley of Ashes hates her life at the gas station , and wants more for her life
than a man who only faked his wealth to be with her (Sam January 17, 2013). Because of this mishap,
Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the book, but no man would step
down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that Myrtle is at. As a result of the social
status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy because she is so far below her. This issue
becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle, out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout
Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character throughout the novel, and with one swift upward
motion broke her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald pg41). Tom believes his actions were acceptable
because Myrtle was speaking out of place. This example shows the extreme actions taken against
someone of a different class, and just how regular it really was to treat them a completely different

Persuasive Essay On Society
People think of me as a mannequin. All show and no substance. It s not often that someone can say
that they have something in common with a celebrity; however, unfortunately I can. Brooke Shields,
the well known model turned actress that verbalized my thoughts, and I are alike in one way; both of
us have been molded into life size dummies. The object that best represents me is a mannequin. I have
discovered this through universal, personal and practical avenues of inquiry.
Firstly, we don t often think about how a life size dummy relates to us as humans or the impact they ve
had on our society as a whole; however, they play a major role in the way we view ourselves as
individuals and function as a collective society. We preach about how precious individuality is, but
intentionally or not, we often strive to become identical to the perceptions of perfection in society. As
a matter of fact, mannequins are often perceived as a universal image of perfection due to their
figures, the various on trend outfits they display, and sometimes even the human like faces painted
onto them. As young children, whenever we go shopping with our parents we would stumble across
displays that would showcase little boys and girls with cool , new outfits and toys and we would
attempt to convince our parents to buy them. As we get into our teen years, often as girls, we see the
mannequins as constant reminders of what we strive to be based on whatever the ideal body type may

You should use shampoos with natural fragrance like eucalyptus and lavender. The ingredients used on

same stories are told every time. When she is told to open the door for the prophet Elijah, she is

The Philosophical View Of Empiricism
Today in society, many people are free to follow which ever philosophical view that they feel is right
for them. Each philosophical view has a different set of beliefs, and many philosophers went through
great lengths to prove that the philosophical view of their choice was the best one. In this paper I will
be talking about two philosophical theories. The first one is called Empiricism, and it was made
famous by a philosopher named David Hume. Empiricism states that our knowledge should come
from sensory experience, impressions, and observation. The other philosophical view I will be taking
about is called Rationalism. Many people who don t agree with empiricism lean more towards

With thoughts, your mind thinks about certain feelings, but you don t experience them first hand. With
impression, you experience things such as hearing, seeing, and feeling first hand, instead of just
thinking about them. For example, an impression can be used to describe a man who is in fit of anger ,
and a man who is thinking about anger, but not actually in a fit of anger would be considered to be a
thought. A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as being less vivacious than
impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or imagination, thus causing them to
be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex ideas, and according to Hume these ideas
are the things that influence our imagination. He claims that complex ideas are combined into one big
idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use
the memories we have of the color gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the
two into a single image of a golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of
the supremely good and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his
goodness to the goodness of a human beings. Hume claims that we can only have knowledge of things
that we have experienced before. Since a blind man can t see, his knowledge of the colors will be very
limited. The only way

Analysis Of `` For Esme, With Love And Squalor ``
In his short story, For Esmé, with Love and Squalor, J.D. Salinger utilizes the function of secondary
characters to expose the correlation between the contrasting ideas of idealism and cynicism. The three
minor characters of Esmé, her brother Charles, and Corporal Z all play different but necessary roles in
the mental and emotional development of the main character, Sergeant X. While the characters of
Esmé and Charles represent the best traits of humanity, their lifestyles contrast that of Corporal Z, a
pessimistic and rude war veteran. After Salinger sets a standard of ideal human nature through the two
siblings and their interaction with Sergeant X, he purposefully introduces Corporal Z into the story to
help demonstrate the differences between the personalities of idealistic and cynical people; in doing
so, Salinger reveals relationships between youthful innocence and idealism, as well as arrogance and
cynicism.
Esmé s commendable traits, such as her compassion and sophistication, reflect her perfection in the
eyes of Sergeant X. From the time she first talks to him at the restaurant, Esmé puts forth effort to
develop a friendship and unique bond with the struggling soldier. After Esmé comments to Sergeant
X, I d be extremely flattered if you d write a story exclusively for me sometime, she reminds him, It

Theme Of Love In Antigone
Joseph Keighley was a thirty year old father whose wife had been subjected to a terrible illness. He
loved her so much that he would perform any task she wished for him to do for her. however as time
passes, she had passed away and his devoted heart for her rendered him to not be with any woman
other than his wife. Love, a powerful word and action is often described to be something in which you
devote your feelings and emotion to something or someone with full intent, however Love in
Antigone, a tragic play, written by Sophocles reciprocates this idea in a completely new way. A theme
that Sophocles writes throughout Antigone could possibly be the idea of loyalty to the city versus
family, and he often grazes upon the origin on many of the themes, providing sufficient amount of
details that could be used to support them. However, a possible main occuring theme of Antigone is
that Love is unconquerable. This theme surfaces in many ways throughout the play, specifically, in the
idea of Love overpowering every aspect that the Greeks and Athenians believed to be impenetrable. In
the midst of the conflict between Creon and Haemon, Creon strongly dislikes and neglected Haemon s
point of view because he believes that he had been corrupted by a woman. Haemon is accused of
being held captive by Antigone and his love for her recognized [him as] the slave of a woman,
referring to the love that Antigone possesses, overpowering Haemon (Sophocles 769). Sophocles

Themes In Snowpiercer
Bong Joon ho s 2013 science fiction film, Snowpiercer, based in a graphic novel of the same name,
offers a look into a frozen future where the last of mankind lives on an evermoving locomotive. It s a
contemporary film focused around the theme of classism in society, driven by metaphors for where we
are and where we are going. With an almost mashup of Orwell meeting the 99%, the story focuses on
the inhabitants of the suppressed population of the train s tail section, led by Chris Evans Curtis,
revolting against the forward living. The film s narrative in relation to its theme is the focal point of
the film and it s main driving force. By using a linear narrative, Joon ho allows the story to move
forward as the characters move towards the front of train. With each decision Curtis makes, the
blocking of his movements is always in a forward motion. He is always looking forward because he
has a definite purpose and only second guesses in a scene (the only scene) where he looks forward and
backward toward two separate outcomes of one decision as the camera follows his head movement in

tell if it s the way he meant the character to be portrayed and that s just Evan s natural charismatic
nature showing through but it adds a layer to the character that makes his decisions and emotions seem
more concrete. The rest of the cast does a great job of carrying out action beats in relation to the

Your company is going through a merger After a merger, it s not uncommon for a company to lay off a

purpose of joining two or more companies to achieve greater efficiencies of scale and productivity.
Back in 2005 when Procter Gamble announced that it would buy Gillette for $57 billion, 6,000 people

Sexuality And Selection Research Paper
Sexuality Selection
In order to create the next generation of a population, survival is not enough. Individuals must also

Darwin stated that sexual selection worked mainly in two ways: COMBAT OR DISPLAY, the first
process is about members of the same sex fighting one another to attract the other sex attention; the
second process, which is called display, is about members of one sex, choosing members from the
other sex.
Combat leads to larger and stronger males, males that outstand from the rest of the population. This

Worn Cameras And The Police Department
ody worn Camera in the Police Department
Xing Huang
Overview of the Policy Issue
Recently, using advanced technologies in law enforcement agencies is becoming a current trend,
because the police accountability has been a hot topic among the general public. It s a relatively
difficult choice for some police executives to decide whether to implement the policy of using the
body worn cameras. The main idea to using the advanced technologies in law enforcement agencies is
to help investigate crimes and communicate with the public. Body worn cameras are considered as
one of the most popular solutions proposed to deal with the racial inequalities and inappropriate use of
force among police. At the meantime, using body worn cameras can also help the police department to
avoid the false claims against the police force as well.
However, policy makers should consider the policy related issues, such as privacy and trust issue,
implementation issue and other factors. The privacy and trust issue leads to some key questions about
the nature of the problem of body worn cameras, for example when is appropriate for officer to record,
should notifications given to whom is being recorded, how to ensure the compliance, who has the
access to the records, and how long will the footage be retained. The implementation issue involves
with financial cost, community relationships, and internal department affairs. Even though some states

Taking a Look at Customs Valuation
Customs Valuation
What is Customs Valuation? Customs valuation can be defined as process to value to a good or service
for the purposes of import or export. Basically, it will involve tariff concessions, implementing trade
policy and others. For our information, this systems has been used a thousand of years ago among
different cultures, and was been proven by evidence in the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty.
Further, the first recorded custom tariff was from 336 in Palmyra, an oasis city in the Syrian Desert.
But, since 20th century, this system has been strength by existence of Agreement on Implementation
of Article VII of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.
In India, customs valuation is a compulsory process that needs to handle. As stated, when an import
consignment arrive in India they need to clear the customs barrier which is their goods will be analyze
in terms of value and a suitable import tariff imposed. The parties that responsible to this process are
the importer or agent which is they need to pay the duty before the goods are cleared by the customs.
Further, tariff is a schedule of duties and it also known as the duty or tax imposed by a country and the
duty or tax within the tariff schedule. Basically, a tax will imposed when the goods cross the border
between two countries.
Besides, export and import are levied either at specific rates or on ad valorem basis. For case of ad

knew was that Carrot would be able to continue pretending he was a superhero, but I never could
again.
Today, I am able to articulate the difference I perceived between myself and Carrot. That difference
was based on the luxury of unlimited aspirations. This luxury allows a white child in America to
believe that this is his land. And in his land he is taught that limitations are set only by his own work
ethic. If he gives life his best shot, the system that distributes the spoils of life will reward him. This is
called the American Dream.

The Debate Of Economics Between Bentham And Aristotle
A Debate of Economics Between Bentham and Aristotle
With all the many issues facing our country today it is difficult to pin down exactly what the biggest
issue is, so instead of picking the biggest issue I decided to pick the issue that has affected people the
most in this country as well as other countries which would be economics. When it comes to
economics the biggest issue facing our country is that we no longer produce what we need to keep up
with our economic system, so what if the philosophers that created the ideas and basic principles so
long ago were around now, and furthermore, what if they were running for the two thousand sixteen
presidential election? In the following I will present a debate between the famous philosophers
Bentham and Aristotle in regards to the current economic system.
Moderator:
First question of the debate: How would you, as US president restore the production of goods to
improve our economic system?
Aristotle s Response
As someone who believes in economic equality I believe that economic scarcity is an inevitable aspect
of human nature that being said, the action we must take as a country to improve is looking at
economic actions as a opportunity to use goods only as an essential for life. To conclude my answer to
this question I believe that as long as goods and services are used to have helpful uses to people it is
essential to our economy because if we are putting money into goods that are useless it s a waste of
money, and

Why Are There Aliens In Area 51
Are there Aliens in Area 51? Many conspiracy theorists believe there are. Area 51 persists of a low
secured United States Air Force base. Many people would assume that they would have it secured
with electric fences and all kinds of security measures but there is not. There are few security
measures that the government uses, but the ones they use are top of the line equipment to ensure
people stay out. The sensors that they use for the borders of the base can detect if the object near is an
animal or a human being. People have said that they keep aliens and alien aircraft s inside the base.
The security is low at the base, but it is being watched during all hours of the day. Some people
believe that the government has sensors spread out throughout ... Show more content on

Many people think that it s aliens, but many people believe that those are not believable enough for
them. They come up with other conspiracy theories of their own and talk about them. One of the more
colorful rumors insists the infamous 1947 Roswell crash was actually a Soviet aircraft piloted by
mutated midgets and the wreckage remains on the grounds of Area 51. (Blitz, 25 April 2018) This was
a crash that happened in the part of Nevada that contained Area 51. That is not all other people
believe, some even think other conspiracy theories happened to take place inside of the buildings at
Area 51. Some even believe that the U.S. government filmed the 1969 moon landing in one of the
base s hangars. (Blitz, 25 April 2018) So, aliens are not the only thing that people believe in inside of
Area 51. It is crazy to think that people spend their lives and all their money on trying to find out what
is inside of Area

How Did The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire occurred on the 25 March 1911. In the Asch building, on the
eighth, ninth, and tenth floor there were around 500 workers present. To avoid theft all the doors on
the floors was locked, except one.The door that was unlocked happened to be surrounded by fire so
there was no escape. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris.
These factories specialized in making women s blouses. Women that worked there were mainly
European and Jewish immigrants that were trying to make some money. Since they made that decision

Problem and Significance
In the human brain, most of our memory is stored and controlled by a part of the brain located in the
center that is called the hippocampus. The hippocampus is crucial because it is in charge of short term

The memory of a human and animals is very complex and are not perfect recordings of the past and as
such, there are idiosyncrasies with it. Sometimes when people or animals try to remember something

them to reassess who they are and what they value. These changes can surface due to transitions faced

  • 2. The Shah s Adaptation And Endorsement Of Islam Throughout the history of present day Iran it has been contested whether the Shi i ulama or the Shah are the logical leaders of the community. It is true that the ulama have gained control of Iran, and that Islam changed much in Iran, but in some respects continuity from the past was far stronger than the new concepts (Frye 36) due to the fact that the power of the Shah remained for hundreds of years after the introduction of Islam. The Iranian people have a long history of traditions and culture and even when Islam spread throughout the country it was adapted to include some of the Iranian traditions. The most significant example of this is the Shah s adaptation and endorsement of Islam. The long history, tradition, and the decline of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The office of the Shah has had such an impact that one may find in the literature and in the art of Iran evidence for a powerful and continuing charisma of kingship, even through great upheavals and changes in the history of the land (Frye 36). The Shahs in pre Islamic Persia established legitimacy by charisma and by being a religious leader because the people believed Ahura Mazda confers on the king charisma and special wisdom. The king s duty was to enforce the law, social order, and righteousness, however if social unrest occurred, it was a sign that the dynasty had lost divine favor. The Iranian theory of kingship lasted for a long periods of time because the Shahs who ruled were charismatic and successful at establishing legitimacy, and if not they were able to be disposed of by the religious priests and nobles. The Shahs in post Islamic Iran needed to learn to establish legitimacy in a region where the people were disposing of Zoroastrian beliefs and converting to the Shī a ideology of Islam. The Shah that managed to merge traditional role of a Shah and the religious aspects of Islam was Shāh Ismāʿil. This Shah needed to establish his legitimacy and did so in two important and relevant ways. First, Shāh Ismāʿil used the the ancient Persian concept of kingship which was expressed in the concept of the king being the shadow of God on Earth because he believed that he was divine and had the right to rule because of ... Using a Digitech QM 1589 (see figure one) three studies were measured in order to successfully account for characteristic behaviours and differentiate between ambient noise levels. These studies where assessed under A and C weightings and in fast and slow settings. • 4. Daoism And Confucianism Essay Daoism, Confucianism, Shintoism There are many religions that originated in Asia. These religions that we are focusing on include Daoism, Confucianism, and Shintoism. The religions of Daoism and Confucianism mainly originated in China, but like most religions, have now spread all throughout Asia to many different cultures. Shintoism on the other hand, originated in Japan and like the other two has also spread all throughout Asia. In this essay I will briefly discuss a few of the main points of each of these religions and ways of life. The first religion I will talk about is Daoism. Daoism seems to go pretty hand in hand with Confucianism, both originating in China, but they obviously have a few differences too. Daoism worships The Dao. Just like many other religions, their main person they worship isn t actually a specific person but more so of a spiritual figure of worship. Daoism is a more relaxed religion compared to Confucianism. The Daoist outlook is a very positive and accepting and joyful way of life. Daoism also focuses a lot on the unknown and the metaphysical parts of life. This is a big difference that distinguishes it from Confucianism, who does not value that as much. They do still accept the metaphysical but do not necessarily value it or consider it of much importance. Daoism is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Colet quickened Erasmus thought to be a primitive theologian, one who would expound scripture but not in a argumentative way of scholastics but in the manner of Jerome and the other Church Fathers, the ones who lived in an age when men still understood and practiced the classical art of rhetoric. The impassioned Colet brought him to lecture on the Old Testament at Oxford, but the more paranoid he was made him not ready even more. He went back to the Continent with a Latin copy of St. Paul s Epistles and the conviction that ancient theology required mastery of Greek. By 1502 Erasmus had already settled in the university town of Leuven which is now in Belgium and was reading Origen and St. Paul Greek. Erasmus urged leaders to inject into the vitals, the teachings of Christ by studying and meditating on the scriptures using a spiritual interpretation. He sailed for England in 1505 trying to find support for his studies, he then found an opportunity to travel to Italy instead. • 7. Fashion Marketing And Its Impact On Consumer s Design... The concept of marketing is the action or business of bringing or sending a product or commodity to the market. (Oxford English Dictionary) Fashion Marketing differs from the marketing of other goods because of the uniqueness of the merchandise. According to the Parson s School of Design, fashion marketing is the process of analyzing, developing, and marketing current fashion trends into sales strategies. (IJMBT) In fashion marketing, consumers are the creators by virtue of their adoption and rejection of new trends and styles. Furthermore, fashion is integral to the construction and communication of one s social identity, helping to define the class, ethnicity, class, age, and the gender of the wearer as a reflection of individuality. Fashion marketers must position products based on consumer s design preference. Fashion advertisements have their own stylistic modes and spheres of production and consumption, involving the interrelationship of word and image among other things. • 9. The Effects Of Using Math Cooperative Learning Groups On A... Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using math cooperative learning groups on a second grade class at Cypress Cove Elementary School during the academic year of 2016 2017. This chapter focuses on conceptual understanding and the effectiveness of cooperative learning groups in math as well as the influence of group processing on achievement. Making Connections in Math Cognitive development occurs when students use their current knowledge of a subject s concepts and procedures to learn new material. Math is no different. Students use what they already know as a foundation for learning new math skills. Teachers who understand this aspect of cognitive development and know how to build on what their students already have learned are effective educators (Sidney Alibali, 2015). In a study of fifth and sixth graders being taught division by fractions, Sidney et al. (2015), found that students drew on their past knowledge to understand new problems. Students used their prior knowledge to activate the transfer of the new information. The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Using differentiated instruction helps build existing knowledge and activates prior knowledge. Once students have gained a deeper level of understanding, using cooperative learning groups is beneficial because it enhances academic achievement, student attitudes, and student retention (Hsiung, 2012). Cooperative learning also provides a natural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Life Cycle of a Plant, Dominant and Recessive Traits Paragraph One: Description of the life cycle of a plant from seed to seed (information about the seed, germination, growth, development, flower, pollination, fruit, seed; information is accurate) The life cycle of a plant from seed to seed is not that complicated, it consists of a few steps. This all starts with a seed. The first step is for the seed to germinate and turn into a seedling. Once the seedling is formed, it will then grow into an adult plant with petals. These petals will then sprout to flowers, which will produce fruits. The flowers will go to a process of fertilization called pollination, that s when the pollen is moved from anthers to stigmas. Since the pollen contains sperm and it is passed on to the ovules in the ovary, the sperm moves down to an ovule, which contains eggs. Fertilization then happens when the sperm fuses with the egg in the ovule. The petals and stamens then fall away creating a fruit. These fruits contain seeds, and once the plant has died, the seeds will fall to the ground and repeat this cycle. So to summarize, the seed goes through a process called germination and forms into a seedling, which then grows roots and forms true leaves. This plant continues to grow until flowers are formed. The next step is a process called pollination and fertilization, which then forms a fruit. The fruit will release the seeds and the process repeats. • 11. The Reality Of Television Programs Today s television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over fifty years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in today s world. Because of today s TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look like. Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being parents. The hit comedy Modern Family has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. As Greg Graffin wrote in his article Anarchy in the Tenth Grade It is also a shining example of how easy it is to follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality which only motivates me to keep fighting for originality. • 14. The Game Of Baseball Was Invented By Abner Doubleday Essay The game of baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday, in 1839 177 years ago from today. Baseball has been, and is still today, known as America s favorite pastime; additionally, due to its extensive history and partaking it monumental events, it can as well serve as a great topic to use in a story or poem. Poet Dale Ritterbusch, uses the game of baseball along with metaphors in his poem as a vehicle to write about a more substantial subject in poetry, the Vietnam War. His poem, Behind the Plate , can be simply over looked to one as just a poem about an overweight catcher; nonetheless, when closely examined, it has a deeper meaning. Authors Michael Cocchiarale and Scott Emmert, both agree with the statement that baseball is a great outlet for further analysis of a more important subject: Writers have seen sports, particularly baseball, as a useful vehicle for cultural and epistemological analysis (Cocchiarale). The poem, Behind the Plate , starts off with the line: Always the dumbest and fattest kid played catcher (Ritterbusch, Behind ); however, Dale Ritterbusch chose to start this poem with that statement for a reason it sets a tone for the rest of the poem to have a certain meaning. The fat catcher is known to specifically represent America in the Vietnam War; the catcher is fat because, well, in history catchers in baseball are often overweight. The first step that was implemented was the one child policy also known as; pinyin. Pinyin is the one child limitation on the majority of families that live in the People s Republic of China. It is enacted under the official family planing policy. It limits the number of children marries urban couples to have to one. The Chinese government has given an official statement saying that roughly to 35 to 40 percent of the Chinese population falls under the one child rule. The higher ups in the government bureaucracy who mostly live in Macau and some parts of Hong Kong are not affected by this policy as well. The policy was brought up by the government in 1978 but, was officially enacted to first born children in 1979. Like today, China was dealing with many social, economic, and environmental problems. Pinyin was a response to alleviate these problems. Chinese authorities claimed that pinyin has prevented around 250 to 300 million births from the time of its implementation in 1979 to the year 2010(SOURE CITATION). There was a thought among the British public that as long as the economy was growing, eventually prosperity would filter down to the lower classes. Victorian notions were rapidly becoming out of date and viewed as wrong, not only economically, but morally as well. In London and York, studies showed that a third of people lived in poverty as a direct result of simply not having a large enough income to cover their basic needs, while thousands more lived in poverty due to inadequate education to manage there finances. If a person doesn t handle the loss well it can ruin everything, tearing their life apart. On the opposite end of that a death could just be a small set back in life before moving forward. The grief is too much for some to bear; they go mad, unable to operate without this person in their life. It all depends on how a person reacts to the loss, in the case of Hamlet from Shakespeare s tragedy Hamlet, he was entirely consumed by grief. This is where Hamlet takes the turn from bad to worse. Because he never let go of his father s death Hamlet is a dead man walking, but now he has a drive for revenge that keeps him moving. It becomes Hamlet s purpose in life. When the ghost visits him again, the ghost tell him Do not forget this visitation Is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose (3.4.112 113). This is especially interesting because unlike the first appearance of the ghost where everyone around could see him, this time only Hamlet could see the ghost. There are two possibilities with this, the first being that the ghost only appeared to Hamlet. This offers very little and would simply mean the ghost worries that Hamlet is forgetting his mission, but the second choice is far more entertaining. The other possibility is that this appearance of the ghost is a figment of Hamlet s crazed mind. General formulas for the coefficient on beta and it standard error are derived, which show that the outcomes of cross sectional tests have no causal relation to the pricing models. If a test refutes a model, this could be because the model is misspecified or because poor proxies for true expected returns and betas are used. Simulation and calibration results suggest that realized returns are a much poorer proxy than estimated betas are. The noise in realized returns typically inflates the estimated standard error, with drastic effects on the statistical power. Inferences based on ex ante returns are more powerful but suffer from a serious size problem. JEL: G12, C31, C52. I. Introduction One should hardly have to tell to financial economists that the noise in the data they use is critically important: garbage in, garbage out. And yet the information surprises in returns are the neglected child in the house of empirical finance, a neglect described by Elton (1999, p.1218) in the following terms: When I first entered the profession, anyone using realized returns as expected returns made the argument that in the long run we should get what we expect. Even this weak defense is no longer used and researchers generally treat realized returns as expected returns in their tests without any qualifications. In this paper, I shall argue that the information surprises in returns, along ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is always being posed in the light of the Dark Ages or Middle Ages, of which the name already suggests the cloud of insignificance it is surrounded by according to many intellectuals. However, before we can distinguish this superior Renaissance philosophy from earlier philosophy, it needs to be established that medieval and Renaissance philosophy do relate to each other and are part of a continuous process of increasing intellectual insights into the world and all its phenomena (Copenhaver and Schmitt, 1992). Both medieval and Renaissance philosophy looked at heritage from their ancestors, and it is not true that medieval philosophy completely disregarded the ancients (Copenhaver and Schmitt, 1992). Rather, they treated the past differently, focusing on ancient philosophy being a companion to theology and the word of God. There were various important developments responsible for the different approach Renaissance philosophy took and its spread throughout Europe, but the most important one can be said to be the introduction of the printing press by Gutenberg in 1440 (Eisenstein, 1980). This development provided a rapid increase of availability of texts to intellectuals and (Eisenstein, 1980). This technological development, along with the rediscovery and recovery of ancient philosophical works in the late Middle Ages were responsible for the rise of Renaissance philosophy and the renewed interest in classical writings which would later become the basis of Renaissance philosophy (Stump, 1982; Copenhaver and Schmitt, ... They had abundant amounts of money, as well as bragging rights to do as they please. One of the most prominent themes in The Great Gatsby is the social class conflicts in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this through rich versus poor conflicts, as well as through Old Money versus New Money conflicts. In this novel, rich are treated significantly different from the poor. The first time the reader really sees this conflict is when Daisy makes fun of their butler. As if spreading gossip, Daisy bluntly asks, Do you want to hear about the butler (Fitzgerald pg17)? On the other end of things Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the Valley of Ashes hates her life at the gas station , and wants more for her life than a man who only faked his wealth to be with her (Sam January 17, 2013). Because of this mishap, Myrtle strives to be with the prosperous Tom Buchanan throughout the book, but no man would step down in class just to be with a woman at the social status that Myrtle is at. As a result of the social status difference, Myrtle has no right to speak about Daisy because she is so far below her. This issue becomes present at the end of chapter 3 when Myrtle, out of spite and ignorance, begins to shout Daisy s name. Tom is the most dominant character throughout the novel, and with one swift upward motion broke her nose with his open hand (Fitzgerald pg41). We preach about how precious individuality is, but intentionally or not, we often strive to become identical to the perceptions of perfection in society. As a matter of fact, mannequins are often perceived as a universal image of perfection due to their figures, the various on trend outfits they display, and sometimes even the human like faces painted onto them. As young children, whenever we go shopping with our parents we would stumble across displays that would showcase little boys and girls with cool , new outfits and toys and we would attempt to convince our parents to buy them. With impression, you experience things such as hearing, seeing, and feeling first hand, instead of just thinking about them. For example, an impression can be used to describe a man who is in fit of anger , and a man who is thinking about anger, but not actually in a fit of anger would be considered to be a thought. A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as being less vivacious than impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or imagination, thus causing them to be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex ideas, and according to Hume these ideas are the things that influence our imagination. He claims that complex ideas are combined into one big idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use the memories we have of the color gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the two into a single image of a golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of the supremely good and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his goodness to the goodness of a human beings. Hume claims that we can only have knowledge of things that we have experienced before. Since a blind man can t see, his knowledge of the colors will be very limited. The only way ... Salinger utilizes the function of secondary characters to expose the correlation between the contrasting ideas of idealism and cynicism. The three minor characters of Esmé, her brother Charles, and Corporal Z all play different but necessary roles in the mental and emotional development of the main character, Sergeant X. While the characters of Esmé and Charles represent the best traits of humanity, their lifestyles contrast that of Corporal Z, a pessimistic and rude war veteran. After Salinger sets a standard of ideal human nature through the two siblings and their interaction with Sergeant X, he purposefully introduces Corporal Z into the story to help demonstrate the differences between the personalities of idealistic and cynical people; in doing so, Salinger reveals relationships between youthful innocence and idealism, as well as arrogance and cynicism. Esmé s commendable traits, such as her compassion and sophistication, reflect her perfection in the eyes of Sergeant X. Love, a powerful word and action is often described to be something in which you devote your feelings and emotion to something or someone with full intent, however Love in Antigone, a tragic play, written by Sophocles reciprocates this idea in a completely new way. A theme that Sophocles writes throughout Antigone could possibly be the idea of loyalty to the city versus family, and he often grazes upon the origin on many of the themes, providing sufficient amount of details that could be used to support them. However, a possible main occuring theme of Antigone is that Love is unconquerable. This theme surfaces in many ways throughout the play, specifically, in the idea of Love overpowering every aspect that the Greeks and Athenians believed to be impenetrable. In the midst of the conflict between Creon and Haemon, Creon strongly dislikes and neglected Haemon s point of view because he believes that he had been corrupted by a woman.
