Character Sketch Of Tolstoy
2 Tolstoy s Character. Tolstoy was a multi dimensional man. In his long career he had been a teacher
and educational theorist, a philosopher and social critic, a successful farmer and paterfamilias, a
soldier, and a prophet. Above all, however, he was a great artist, and it is on his fiction that his fame at
present rests. The literary career of this great writer of the Russian land (as his contemporary Turgenev
called him) may be divided into three parts: the early period of literary apprenticeship (1851 63), the
period of the great novels (1863 77), and the later period of preoccupation with the message of his
religious teaching (1878 1910). The works of the early period may be regarded as the school in which
Tolstoy taught himself to write. He isolated the themes and developed the literary ... Show more

His account focuses heavily on both sides tactical successes and failures from maneuvers in battle to
how they handled occupied territory. Before the French surrender, Pierre s brush with execution
becomes a cutting satire of French bureaucracy, which functions so badly that Pierre is nearly
executed simply because a general was interrupted while he was deciding Pierre s sentence. However,
the Russians also become objects of Tolstoy s critique. He depicts disorganization and a lack of
professionalism on both sides. The French failures are not limited to their ineffective bureaucracy.
Since the battle of Borodino and the looting of Moscow, Tolstoy writes, the French army had borne
within itself, as it were, the chemical conditions of its decomposition Napoleon and his generals seem
to have good intentions they order their men not to loot and treat the Russians they meet respectfully.
However, the privation and lack of discipline in the French army means that the foot soldiers eagerly
and violently loot Moscow at their first

Essay on cultrual cultural deprivation the hispanic...
Cultural Deprivation: The Hispanic Challenge nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Why do some groups not
succeed in academic settings? One theory brought up in Understanding inequality suggests that the
gap in the socioeconomic status drives the inequalities in the school system. The low and working
class have less time and income to intervene with schooling. This means they have less time to meet
with teachers, hire tutors, and provide continuous transportation. Therefore the lower class can t
possibly compete with the middle and upper classes. Angela Valenzuela gives the accounts of some
Hispanic students experiences in school. These students feel that it is the inferior nature of the schools
in the US that contribute to the low success ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Huntington, unlike previous immigrants, Hispanics wish to retain a dual culture. This
presents them with the culture clash of two varying views on culture as well as education. There are
several factors that have made this culture of immigrants assimilations so much different than the past
immigrants that America has so fondly welcomed with open arms. These include contiguity, scale
illegality regional concentration, persistence and historical presence. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The
fact that the US shares such a large boarder with Mexico is enhanced by the great economic
differences on each side. The income gap between the United States and Mexico is the largest between
any two contiguous countries in the world (Huntington). The incentive to immigrate is obvious, and
allows Latinos to remain in contact with their family and friends while making a living in the US.
Because the passage between these boarders is so accessible, it has lead to immigration on a grand
scale. The persistence of Hispanics in migrating has lead to having Mexicans account for nearly half
of all immigration to the US and has changed Mexican s standing from the minority to the majority in
many areas. This regional concentration has slowed assimilation because dispersal is essential for this
to take place. An example of regional concentration slowing this process down to almost a halt is in

Amores Perros Essay
Amores Perros is a film that exploits the economy and the people of Mexico City to display the
animalistic side of the human nature and means of survival. The skillful usage of three different social
and economic standings in the movie creates an image of Mexico for many who have not experienced
or understand Mexican society. Displaying survival in Mexico City is compared to love and passion.
Octavio, a teenager, lives in a working class family who tries to survive under horrid situations. He
attempts to make a clean living by entering his brother s dog in local fights. He undertakes the role to
become a caregiver and sole provider for the family. Valeria displays the typical high class, but she
,like the dogs, must sell her body for survival. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In intimate scenes between Octavio and Susana, his brother s wife, crammed shots of them is reflected
on mirrors. These scenes show the true nature of human s impulse for pleasure and passion. Humans
are impulsive because they seek pleasure for themselves, no matter who, or what they effect. Octavio
willingly seeks pleasure from the girlfriend of his brother. Octavio attempts to survive, by means of
sacrificing an animal. He does this to provide for his needs of security and aid for Susana. In Valeria s
case, Daniel fuels his passion by leaving his family to have an affair with her. Valeria and Daniel
become consumed by their passion and love. Daniel commits actions against his wife because he
wants to become rich through Valeria. Valeria is treated like Octavio treats his own canine. Valeria is
only needed when she can benefit and earn money for Daniel. El Chivo displays his lack of
connection to this impulsive and reckless world, yet he li commits actions against humanity. He is a
professional hitman for a local policeman. He uses his status to isolate himself from the impulsiveness
of Mexican society. The characters display the animalistic and impulsive passion that are shared

Native American Healing Traditions Could Supplement Modern...
Many traditional Native medicines and healing practices were discouraged with the advent of Western
medicine, but now there is a movement to return to traditional ways (Zubek, 1994, p. 1924). Modern
Western medicine treats the symptoms to cure a diseased state when the body is out of homeostasis.
Native American healing traditions do this as well with herbs and plants suited to the purpose. These
Native healing traditions also include sacred rituals, chants, and purification rites to help bring the
spirit and mind of the afflicted back into balance. In effect, treating the whole person, not only the
disease. A blending of these two healing practices could bring about better prognoses for today s
patients. The purpose of this paper is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The findings of this survey showed that 73.6% agreed with the use of traditional medicines for health
maintenance, 79.2% agreed for benign illness, such as colds or sprained ankles, and 90.3% agreed for
palliative care (Zubek, 1994, p. 1926). Where they disagreed the most was with the use of traditional
healing in the intensive care units, only 16.9% agreed with the use of this treatment for serious illness,
such as cardiac or respiratory compromise, whether in the hospital (21.2% agreed) or as outpatients
(26.4% agreed). Nearly half (48.6%) agreed with using traditional medicines for chronic illnesses,
such as non insulin dependent diabetes or Parkinson s disease (Zubek, 1994, p. 1926). One instance
where physicians were unwilling to allow their patients to use Native medicine was while the patient
is in the hospital, because the physician could be held legally responsible for any treatment
administered while admitted under their care. There is also the problem of differentiating between
legitimate Native healing practitioners and those who would take advantage of anyone not aware of
the proper rituals and techniques that need to be performed (Zubek, 1994, p. 1929). This could be
overcome by having a formalized licensing organization such as is used by Western practitioners (i.e.
American Society of Clinical Pathology [ASCP]). That poses another problem though, as to whether
traditionalists would be willing to have such an organization.

Hatshepsut s Accomplishments
For over 22 years, the most powerful man in all of ancient Egypt was, in fact, a woman. That woman
was Pharaoh Hatshepsut, one of the first female pharaohs in Egypt s long history. During her reign she
built great monuments both in Egypt and Nubia. Egypt also thrived while she ruled, proving that she
was a strong and powerful leader even though she was a woman instead of a man. Hatshepsut was an
amazing woman who had some incredible accomplishments.
Rising to Power
One of Hatshepsut s greatest accomplishments was simply becoming pharaoh as a woman. Since her
birth, Hatshepsut had always had some power. Her parents were Thutmose I and his main wife,
Ahmose, so she was part of the royal family (Ross). Then, she was married to her half brother,

Great Lakes Water Quality Essay
Water quality in the Great Lakes is something that has been a criticall issue in the Great Lakes Region
for a number of years. Water quality can be anything that affects the benefits humans derives from
water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is possible. Many
invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the
Great Lakes. The ecosystem and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion.
I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the Great Lakes is to prevent the
problem from happening before it already has.
Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes
in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100
inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel from European
waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes.
The invading species began to attach itself to almost every solid thing in the Great Lakes. These can
stick to boats, damage structures such as docks and piers, and they can clog water intake pipes, which
are used for drinking and industrial use. Invasive species like the zebra ... Show more content on

Therefore, in my opinion, the best approaches for dealing with the invasive species is to create
effective mechanisms to prevent their introduction in the first place before it happens, create
monitoring systems for detecting new infestations and we need to move rapidly to eradicate newly
detected invaders. Once invasive species become established and spread, it can be extraordinarily
difficult and costly to control or get rid of them all

Who is to say that we won t have a future like this. Dystopian fiction is likely to be part of our future,
whether it is the literature or parts of the government being adopted.
Some parts of our future that dystopian fiction can have on us could be our literature. Many people

Rise Of American Feudalism
Feudalism was the predominant way of life before capitalism. During the feudal era, everyone lived
life according to the privileges and obligations that were associated with their social standing. The
interest of everyone one the manor was to please a higher lord s: vassals sought to pay their debts and
lords would provide residents of the manor with the means of subsistence in exchange for their labor.
On a manor, there was no currency; all obligations were paid in kind or were done to repay someone
else for their service. In a capitalist society, the goal of the individual is to acquire as much wealth for
himself. He is only interested in gaining money for his interest as opposed to paying obligatory debts
like in feudalism. After the change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the rise of capitalism and the spread of money into rural areas, vassals began to commodity their
labor, and lords began to commodity their land. Commodifying land and labor allowed lords and
vassals to receive more cash on a regular basis, yet the payments they received were still not steady
and constant. As more vassals and lords commodified land and labor, land and labor soon became
regarded as commodities. In feudalism, labor was seen as a relationship between the laborer and the
lord, or the person receiving the labor. With the spread of monetization, however, the concept of
abstract labor was introduced: a laborer could now sell his capacity/power and ability to do labor and
the purchaser would be the owner of anything that the laborer produced (i.e. if someone buys someone
s capacity to cook a meal, the meal that the laborer produces with the boot capacity belongs to the
buyer). This new way of understanding labor soon became widespread and labor feudal perceptions of
labor were abandoned; labor had become a commodity, part of a capitalist economy. Moreover, land
was now thought of as a commodity that could be bought and sold, unlike in feudalism where it was
only seen as a lease from a higher lord that could be exploited but never owned. Perceptions of
property also changed; property, or the amount of tangible goods someone had in their possession,

Cardiac Muscle Structure
Structure The cardiac muscle is only found in the heart. This muscle had one nucleus and is an
involuntary striated muscle. Cardiac muscle also contains intercalated disc, which acts as a junction
between the two muscle cells in order to communicate. Also, the cell contains no motor nerve
terminals. The extracellular calcium ions and the cells of the heart act as a stimulus allowing it to
contract via electrical impulse. The cardiomyocytes/ myocardiocyteal muscle cells and the one
nucleus makes up the cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscles are the muscles that are under the control of
the somatic nervous system (voluntary) and are striated. Also they have many nuclei and are triggered
into motion via electrical impulses from the motor neuron terminals connected to the muscle fibres.
These motor neurons are coordinated by the central nervous system and are networked. A bundle of
collagen fibres known as tendons is usually attached to bones of the muscle. The muscle is made up of
individual components known as myocytes. These are made up of myofibers.
Role The main role of the cardiac muscle is to keep the heart beating. The muscle has a large number
of mitochondria and numerous myoglobins because the muscle is different to other muscle cells as it
never gets tired and it is to provide a good blood supply. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lack Of Success Between 1815 And 1848
Italian Nationalism s lack of success between 1815 and 1848 stemmed from four important reasons,
the main factor for lack of success was the Austrian Empire but was however not the only factor.
Other factors preventing Italian nationalism were, lack of national identity, divisions amongst the
nationalists and the church.
During 1815 and 1848 the Austrian rule within the Italian peninsula was brutal and repressive. The
Italian language had been banned in public life. Signs, law courts, newspapers and schools all had to
be in German the language of the Austrians, throughout regions directly ruled by Austria there was
also a network of spies and informers listening to peoples business to imprison suspected Italian
nationalists some of which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pope feared Italian nationalism as he didn t want to lose control over the states of the church and
also the money the church created through taxation and pilgrms. The pope also opposed Italian
Nationalism as he felt sympathetic towards the Habsburgs and the Bourbons as they were the rulers of
southern Italy and the two most powerful royal families in Europe and he did not wish to weaken them
by supporting Italian Nationalism. The pope feared what he called a civil war the Austrian Habsburgs,
Spanish Bourbons and Italian Nationalists all followed the Catholic religion, the pope would not
condone a Nationalist Revolution in which Catholics killed Catholics. furthermore the pope was a
very conservative individual, therefore feared new ideas and social change such as liberalism and
socialism. the pope feared that Italian nationalism would lead to the church being persecuted like it
had been in the French revolution and because of this the Catholic church in Italy threatened to ex
communicate any Catholic found to be a member of any Nationalist organisations, these factors
throughout the church also contributed to the lack of Italian nationalist

Even though the speaker points the man of moderation as the most pernicious enemy, his name (an

means not bad but not good. In my opinion the Roarer is the most dangerous, because he is very
confident about what he thinks and says, even though his statements are just a result of his ideals and
beliefs and not facts. He analyzes the situation and then makes an assumption. And the least harmful
would be the man of moderation for the facts mentioned above.

Background In 1866 Wilham Ebstein first described the cardiac defects associated with Ebsteins s
Anomaly. Ebstein was a doctor born in Prussia in 1836 who received his medical degree from Berlin
in 1859. A 19 year old patient who presented with shortness of breath and palpitations was not able to
withstand his insufficient tricuspid valve. Wilham s autopsy of the young man indicated an enlarged
and fenestrated anterior tricuspid leaflet; the posterior and septal leaflets were hypoplastic, thickened
and adherent to the right ventricle, an enlarged right atrium, and a patent foramen ovale (Swiss
Medical Weekly, 2005). Although Ebstein portrayed the first case it was not until 1927 that Alfred
Arnstein suggested the name Ebstein s Anomaly for these defects. Ten years later in 1937 Yates and
Sharpiro confirmed a case of Ebstein s Anomaly with radiographic and electrocardiographic data
(Riaz, 2013). In the past this anomaly was typically diagnosed during an autopsy, now
echocardiography is the standard for diagnosis. Once patients could be diagnosed with Ebstein s while
they were still alive, a group of symptoms was eventually composed.

Slavery In The Old South
This historical analysis will define the argument put forth by James Oakes (1998) about the misguided
view of slavery as a paternalistic system of economics in the Old South. The paternalistic/honorific
view of slavery is incorrect because of the underlying system of capitalism, which allowed
slaveholders to exploit, commercialize, and commoditize slaves for profit. More so, Oakes (1998)
shows how the industrial Northern was simply a different form of capitalism that often cooperated
with the agrarian South in exploiting slaves as a method of low cost labor. Machine technology
allowed northerner manufacturers to exploit low wage laborers in industry, yet the South relied
heavily on the exploitation of slaves for agrarian production. Oakes ... Show more content on

The only conflict between the two capitalist systems was the outdated methods of human labor that
the South relied upon to compete with the increasingly industrialized methods of farming that the
north was using as they expanded into western territories. Oakes (1998) defines the capitalist system
as the driving force for economic conflicts between these two regions of the United States: Having
repudiated the suggestion that all poor people in America ought to be enslaved, conservatives argued
instead that slavery, as practiced in the South, represented the fulfillment of destiny (Oakes, 1998, p.
215). This economic view of low cost labor defines how Oakes (1998) understands the underlying
profitability of a capitalistic system, which temporarily sustained a cooperative relationship between
the North and South. The difference between these two societies was the method in which low cost
labor could be exploited through wage slavery in the North and outright slavery in the South. The
roots of capitalism are also found in the willingness of colonial slaveholders to join the American
Revolution because it would free them from the exploitative bonds of British capitalism that hindered
their ascension to greater wealth as land owners and slave holders: Colonial slaveholders had
enthusiastically joined the Revolution against Britain: most saw no conflict between its libertarian
principles and the perpetuation of slavery (Oakes, 1998, p.241). These are important aspects of the
underlying profitability of slavery in the capitalistic system of economics, which often overrode the
principles in favor of gaining access to low cost slave labor during the antebellum era. In this manner,
the capitalistic

The Mariah Carey Christmas Special 2014
The concert that I have selected for my review is the Mariah Carey Christmas special 2014. The
concert took place on December 16 at the beacon theater in New York City and it lasted for
approximately an hour. The concert opened with a performance by a ballerina with classical music.
Then followed by the entrance of Mariah Carey, who was at the center of the stage. The visual of the
concert I have to say personally was amazing and impressive, it had a big Christmas tree in the back
and background with the stars and snowflakes hang from the ceilings, very Christmas like to me. Her
band was dressed in white; she had backup singers and a choir right behind her. She began her concert
with the famous Hark! The Herald Angels Sing / Gloria, personally I was moved by the way she sang
that song, it was moving, it provokes many emotions to me, however this is a song that has a lot of
high notes and it was very hard to hear her voice because she was not able to sing it the way she did.
Although she did not preform this song like she used to, I have to admit that it made me cry a little, it
such a beautiful song and even though she made have sang it under peach, I appreciated her voice and
she was still able to make the song her and put a lot of emotions to it. She seemed to be singing under
notes in other songs that she performed as well. The rhythm was very smooth and the melody was on
point, she was able to hit with a soft approach the lower pitches, however when it came to the high

mind alone (pg.20, Sire). The author states that it is from the heart that all one s thoughts and actions
proceed. The basis of the introduction of Sire s book is answering the seven basic questions of
worldview, including what is prime reality the really real? what is the nature of external reality, that is,
the world around us? what is a human being? what happens to a person after death? Why is it possible
to know anything at all? And finally, how do we know what is right and wrong? (pg.22). Also, the
author asserts that by being able to answer some or many of the seven worldview questions that an
individual has, then people can form their own worldviews for themselves. Sire discusses nine
different worldviews by answering those seven questions, explaining them and depicting what each
worldview system believes and does not. Thus, Sire closes the introduction of the book with two
questions, Which is your universe? And Which are the universes next door? (pg. 24 Sire). A Universe
Charged with The Grandeur of God (Christian Theism): Sire begins chapter one discussing

RAPPING ABOUT RAP Essay
Rap music is on its way to becoming one of the most popular forms of music on the market today.
Although rap has only been popular for the last 15 years, it can be traced back to the days of slavery
and even further to the tribes of Africa. Rap is used now as it was used for the past few centuries, as a
form of communication. This music has been a way for the young African American s to speak out
about their lives and the struggles they go through. Like rock n roll and other forms of music that
achieve national attention, rap is being blamed for corrupting our youth. There is a new type of rap
music out called quot;Gangster Rap quot;. This form of rap music is not the same and should not be

Another link from African music to Rap is in the sounds that are used. It is said that quot;Grand
Wizard quot; invented quot;scratching quot; while practicing at home (Greenberg 15), however Andrei
Strobert, a Brooklyn based scholar, musician and artist was quoted in an article by Harry Allen about
the roots of rap music, quot; The scratch that you hear in hip hop is similar to the African sekere quot;.
She goes on to explain, quot;A sekere is a big gourd with beads around it quot;. She also noted that
many of the sounds rappers use in her studio are from the Imo tribe of Nigeria (80).
There are many comparisons between rap and African music but one comparison you don t hear about
too often is the influence by Puerto Ricans living in New York at the time rap started popping up. Juan
Flores brings up this comparison in his article,
quot;Recital of decimals and aguinaldos in the Puerto Rican folk tradition involved methods of
improvisation and alternation much like those typical of rap performances, while the tongue twisting
(trabalengua) style of some plena singing is an even more direct antecedent. More important, perhaps,
just as with doo wop and rhumba, there is a fascinating quot;fit quot; between Puerto Rican quot;clave
quot; and characteristic rap rhythms quot;(583).
Puerto Rican s also played a big part in the influence of break dancing, a big part of

The Disaster Management Stages Of Disaster
Disasters are categorized as natural, man made, or a combination of the two. For this paper, I will
identify a natural or man made disaster that are currently brandishing in the world and are providing
news headlines or happening within my very community. I will describe the various characteristics of
the disaster chosen and apply the disaster management stages.
Current Natural or Man Made Disaster
The current natural disaster I will be discussing pertains to the flooding in Houston, Texas. The initial
flooding occurred on April 18, 2016 afflicting nine counties in and around Houston, placing them in a
state of disaster. Seven lives have been taken as a result of the immense flooding. 1,000 homes have
been flooded, as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Preventability measures are taken to prepare for disasters that are known risk for happening. Although
not all disastrous events can be prevented initially, steps can be taken to reduce the impact and after
effects when they do occur. For instance, with the Houston flood, numerous reservoirs were
constructed to help control some overflow of some 67 billion gallons of water. Imminence coincides
with predictability in most cases and also helps the planning of prevention and control when it can be
implemented. Weather forecasters can be detrimental when it comes to predicting a flood as this can
predict expected rainfall duration and amounts. The scope and number of casualties is usually tallied
during and after a disastrous event as the baseline is always zero prior to the event happening. This
specific criteria represents the number of people displaced, injured or killed per event happening.
Intensity is typically measured before an event to help garner some sort of ability to prepare for an
expected incoming crisis. Intensity can also be measured during a disaster to help foretell fatality rates
and also overall damage incurrence.
Application of Disaster Management Stages
Prevention, preparation and planning, responsiveness, and recovery are all the stages of managing a
disaster. Prevention is the first stage in disaster management. This stage occurs before a disaster takes
place and identifies possible risks.

Speech On Lasik Surgery
Good Morning everyone I am in front of you to discuss my topic which is in titled Lasik Surgery but
before that I have a quote here which fit on my topic, We have hearing aids in order to fix our ear. We
have lasik surgery in order to fix our eyes, People... you can t fix stupid! by Ron White . So let me
start, what comes into your mind when you hear the word lasik? So basically lasik means an eye
correct vision which needs a laser to reshape the inner cornea. There are three types of eye conditions,
the nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism. So first let us know the nearsighted or (myopia), basically
means that people who are nearsighted they can t clearly see a text or a thing that is too far from them
and they need to move closer in that certain area, nearsighted people usually experiencing blur vision
when they are far well they can read it but then the text itself will turn into a blur one. It can be a
common cause of having a blur vision. So here is a sample picture of myopia. The second is farsighted
or (hyperopia), basically means that people who are farsighted they are unable to see things clearly
they can see it but it needs to have a good distance most of them usually imagine or foresight on what
will happen on the things that has been shown in front they can clearly see it because they are ... Show

Generic And Name Brand Drugs
While recent advancements in modern medicine have turned it into a field of competition between
generic and name brand drugs, these drugs show very slight differences in ability while they have a
large difference in price. The FDA is in charge of overseeing the creation of these generic and name
brand drugs. Too much diversity in their results is unacceptable to FDA so they keep a close watch on
the makeup and effectiveness of the drugs and how they impact the human body. Along with the
differences in their chemical makeups shown by the results of each drug there are the social issues that
accompany the name brand and marketed drugs vs. the generic drugs which are never advertised and
only sold. The idea that and almost identical product ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of those companies were under another company called boots who, up until 1986, held the patent
rights to ibuprofen. After 1986 many generic brand labels began to produce ibuprofen. The rise in
generic ibuprofen completely shut out all but one of the name brand producers of ibuprofen as shown
by the disappearance of Nuprin. Generic drugs have destroyed the market for name brand drugs by
being cheaper and just as efficient When a generic drug product is approved, it has met rigorous
standards established by the FDA with respect to identity, strength, quality, purity, and potency.
However, some variability can and does occur during manufacturing, for both brand name and generic
drugs. When a drug, generic or brand name, is mass produced, very small variations in purity, size,
strength, and other parameters are permitted. FDA limits how much variability is acceptable (FDA).
This lack in difference of quality has allowed generic drugs to out sell many name brand drugs since
people understand that what they are buying are practically the same thing so why would they buy
anything more expensive. Generic manufacturers are able to sell their products for lower prices
because they are not required to repeat the costly clinical trials of new drugs and generally do not pay
for costly advertising, marketing, and promotion. In addition, multiple generic companies are often
approved to market a single product; this creates competition in the market place,

Taking a Look at Best Buy
Synopsis
When one envisions an electronic company, Best Buy generally comes to mind. It is just like Nike or
Coca Cola. Founded in 1966, this company was formally known as Sound of Music (Hoffman, 2010,
p.24 2). It was mainly a retailer of audio components. However, in the early 1980s, Best Buy began to
add additional products. It was not uncommon for the next 30 years for more products to be added as
technology advanced. In 1983, the company changed its name to Best Buy Co. and operated as a
superstore (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). The entire look of this company was changing drastically. This
would include the sales staff as well. Originally, the staff had worked on a commission based salary.
However, in 1989, this structure was eliminated and sales associates transformed into educators that
assisted customers in learning about the products offered in the stores (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2).
Basically, the customer took control and the employees were there as guidance. The idea of having
control in buying electronics became more common as the technology developed. In order to let the
consumer have more control, the company expanded further by developing and releasing
BestBuy.com. This website was launched in 2000 to give customers a choice between visiting a
physical store and purchasing products online (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2).

Honda Pilot Commercial Analysis Essay
The Sing A Long
In the 2012 Honda Pilot commercial, the viewer will automatically notice that this car is a total family
based car. In the commercial a family of eight is shown traveling on what seemed to be a very long
and exhausting car ride, heading to a vacation spot of some sort. With six kids in the back, the viewer
wouldn t imagine a quiet car ride, luckily the teen in the back row of the car changed that. The boy
started making a beat with his mouth that was very familiar to not just him but to his sister as well,
who continued to make another beat with him that was not just familiar to them, but to there whole
family. Once everyone in the car had figured out the song, one of the daughters sitting by the window

The setting in the commercial is very important because the Honda Pilot was made for bigger families
that like to travel. The setting in this commercial was on a road in what looked like the middle of
nowhere. There were tons of dirt hills as they drove past that almost look like mountains Which could
be one of the reason why the windows were down in the Honda Pilot. In the Honda Pilot not just the
driver and the passenger side window roll down, but the back middle roll down as well. With
mountains being there, it helps the Pilot show off that feature which can partly convince the buyer to
purchase the Honda. The viewer will also notice the dullness of colors being used in the commercial.
When watching the commercial the viewer will notice that the mountains, and the sky outside of the
Honda Pilot are a very dull yellow and brown color. The point of that is to show how boring life is
outside of the Pilot. The dullness of the colors outside of the vehicle make the vehicle come off as a
shiny new item that the viewer needs for his/her family, but the colors on the inside play a big role to
the commercial as well. The interior of the Honda Pilot can be described as soft and plush material, as
well as smooth and warm. The Honda Pilot was made for families so the impotence of how well the
interior was contrasted with the outside of the car was very

Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education
Ward, 2005); President Obama s defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012
(Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act
(ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government s support for gifted education has
been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA), which guarantees all children between the ages of three and twenty one with specifically
identified disabilities a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment in
conformance with an Individualized Education Program (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by
federal government is severely lacking (Brown, 2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act
(2015) is encouraging for gifted education as it promotes professional development to support high
ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data
publicly available, and advocates for research and the distribution of research that supports best
practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those
who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities,
which is to support Initiatives [that] develop and scale up models serving students who are
underrepresented in gifted and talented programs (USDOE, 2017).
Nomination and Confirmatory Practices
In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman
(2013) identified nine gifted identification methods she found through reviewing 103 articles. These
methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher,
parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of
evidence (i.e. Performance Based Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there
appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of giftedness often
align more with the latter than the former. The fact that there are blurred lines between these terms
might explain why there has been an overreliance on IQ

Manipulation Of Power In George Orwell s 1984 By George...
Manipulation of the Mind After capturing Winston Smith for thought crime, O Brien describes real
power as tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your
choosing (Orwell 266). By this he explains that true power is being able to choose what people minds
think. In George Orwell s novel, 1984, Winston, a Ministry of Truth worker who hates the Party,
slowly starts to disobey the Party rules such as having freedom of thought and individuality. He
entrusts a Party member, O Brien, with his secret for the hatred of the Party. O Brien reveals that he is

Orwell also demonstrates that the government can manipulate people, as they grow older. He shows
that children learn to think a certain way, as they are educated. For instance, Parsons, a man who
strongly supports Big Brother, is turned into the Thought Police when his own daughter convicts him
of saying Down with Big Brother in his sleep (Orwell 233). This demonstrates that the education
children receive manipulates their minds into thinking the way the government wants. Parsons
daughter learned to turn in people who did not support Big Brother even if it was a family member.
The Party also uses the Ministry of Truth to manipulate its population with skewed history. Winston s
job is to change records of history so people only know the history that the government wants them to
know. Through these lies, the government is able to control people s thoughts and how they think.
Orwell shows that people have lost their thoughts without even noticing since they have been taught to
always think like so. He uses this to demonstrate that if man [does] not become aware of the assaults
on his personal freedom, he will lose his right of thought (Bossche). Therefore, Orwell establishes that
the government can be too powerful when they manipulate people without anyone noticing. Not only
does Orwell show that the government controls its subjects mentally but they also do physically. When
convicted of Thought Crime, these criminals endure

Gendered Societal Expectations of Appearance and Their Effects Upon the Individual
It has long been generally accepted that we as humans are influenced greatly by the things that
surround our everyday lives. These things can include friends, family, co workers, the media and even
society as a whole. The society in which people live can play a huge role in how they view themselves
and how they view others. Over the years researchers have come up with many theories as to how and
why society has such a large influence on people. Now a days there are appearance prescriptions for
everything in our society. It is not good to be too fat, but it is not good to be too skinny either. The way

This study suggests that body dissatisfaction may mediate the relationship between overweight and
depression (Chaiton, 2009). It goes on to suggest that the relationship found between obesity and
depression is differentiated by gender because of the difference in societal expectations placed on
women and men (Chaiton, 2009). The study concluded that females experience body dissatisfaction
almost solely when they believe they are overweight, whereas both males who believe that they are
under or overweight experience body dissatisfaction which can in all cases lead to some level of
depression (Chaiton, 2009).
As the aforementioned study showed societal expectations concerning appearance can, and often do,
affect men just as much as they do women (Chaiton, 2009). Our society pushes men to be big,
muscular and manly. To certain degree the more muscular a man is the more attractive he generally is
within society. A study from an international journal regarding social behavior and personality
concluded that the attractiveness of a man is more important in determining social desirability than the
age of the man in question (Perlini, 2001). Comparatively the results of these two studies add up to
say that the attractiveness of a man is one of the main factors in determining societal desirability and
one of the biggest factors in being attractive is being muscular or strong. This puts a lot of pressure on
males to be concerned

Lolita Analysis
Vladimir Nabokov s novel Lolita was first published in France 1955, after being rejected by four
publishers whom feared they would be incarcerated. However, it s understandable why the story of a
young pubescent girl, being groomed by her paedophilic step father and then engaging in a sexual
relationship whilst embarking on a journey across America, didn t sit well with many people, therefore
was then banned from 1956 1959, for its obscenity and pornographic content in France, United
Kingdom, Argentina, South Africa, USA and New Zealand. The book has also been described as
highbrow pornography and absolutely disgusting . But why is the book deemed so obscene and
disgusting?
Instead of using the book as a moral compass and convicting and condemning the deep rooted
corruption that lurks within Humbert Humbert as a paedophile, the reader is assaulted and softened by
the power of appeal . In other words, the reader is strangely and obscenely seduced to identify and
indulge in their own desires, but by no means specifically perversion, to then cloud the reader s
judgement of whether Humbert is guilty or not. Surely for the reader to then condemn him, they would
be condemning themselves too? Nabokov himself states that I[he] is neither a writer or a reader of
didactic fiction. Lolita has no moral tow... fiction affords me to enter... aesthetic bliss . The power of
appeal is where the true obscenity lies; between the reader and the narrator of Humbert. Regardless of

This depressing state makes the reader understand the world of darkness they live in, indicating no
light or happiness lives there. The reader also understands that something horrible must have
happened to the world they live in. Darkness is commonly associated with death which can occur from
destruction through fire, civilisation collapsing and destruction of those by other humans. This
particular darkness in the reader s opinion can be associated with post apocalyptic events. The theme
of dystopian is defined in the novel through the unpleasant new world that our future is considered to
be bound to. Other techniques that have been used in McCarthy s novel include descriptive language.
Descriptive language has been included in the text to create a clearer image of the surrounding settings
of the novel. No sound but the wind in the bare and blackened trees. This indicates the new world the
novel is set in has been under some destruction. This destruction may have been caused possibly by a
nuclear war or some horrific event. McCarthy has successively been able to use the language feature
throughout his novel, in particular synonyms and descriptive language, to engage the reader and
convince them that the genre of the novel is post apocalyptic dystopia.

Kendra Randall Jolivet s Study
Kendra Randall Jolivet s study was a study that involved the impact that divorce has on teenagers
from the ages of thirteen to eighteen. Today divorce is looked at as another chance to happiness.
During the 1950s, divorce was based on what a spouse did wrong. The spouse had to prove the other
spouse of being guilty of committing a marital offense. There was a strong belief at the time that
children from broken homes were at the risk of school failure, delinquency, and psychological
disorders (Jolivet, 2009). As divorce has become more common,
THE WAY DIVORCE IMPACTS CHILDREN 5 legislation changed and decided that the spouse no
longer had to be at fault. In 2009, the GordonPoll Youth Survey gathered opinions on divorce from a
child s perspective. The survey asked over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children of these parents do not want to be blamed for anything. Students say that growing up
without your mom or dad in the picture changes your whole outlook on life. Researchers found that
children are hurt when their parents do not tell them the truth about things. When parents do not keep
their child updated on things that are going on in the house, this could make the child feel like they are
not respected. In the GordonPoll Youth Survey, the children say they just need to know that the
divorce was not their fault. A Parental alienation is the creation of one relationship between a child
and one parent, to the exclusion of the other parent typical indicator of this would be a child who does
not wish to have contact with the target parent and expresses negative feelings towards that parent
with no real reason why. There are four forms of parental alienation: mild, moderate, overt, and
severe. Mild alienation occurs when a child feels significant discomfort

Post Cold War Dbq Essay
Following WWII and during the Cold War, there was a sense of instability in Europe. To counteract
this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism
that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal.
Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during
the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into
zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. For these reasons and many more, certain
officials wanted to create a better sense of unity in Europe. In 1957, with the Treaty of Rome, the
European Economic Committee (EEC) was formed. Officials ... Show more content on

Britain in the years after 1950 was especially concerned at what joining the EEC would bring. The
British finance minister Harold Macmillan worried that by joining they would damage their internal
commerce system even if they were gaining new outside trading opportunities (Document 7). As
finance minister, he was likely thinking purely money and not acknowledging the other factors
associated with unification. The EEC did not seem to be the perfect fit but staying out of it would put
out the impression of isolation. Britain wanted a way of associating with this initiative in Europe in
such a way as to benefit us all . Those in Britain did not appear to make a concrete decision; over 30
years after Macmillan issued his statement Margaret Thatcher voiced a similar opinion. In 1988,
England had joined the EEC 15 years earlier but there were still topics of unanimity England was
unsure about. In this case, Thatcher was concerned that the Single European Act which seeked a single
currency and market would take away the uniqueness of each individual country. Thatcher believed
that Europe would benefit from being more united and with a greater sense of common purpose, but it
must be in a way which preserves the different traditions, parliamentary powers, and a sense of pride
in one s culture (Document

Taking a Look at Joe Flacco
A professional sport is a sport in which the players get paid to play and gets drafted from either
college or high school. A professional sport is that player s job and they are the best of the best, like
Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens Quarterback (NFL)). Joe Flacco was born Joseph Vincent Joe Flacco in
Audubon, New Jersey on January 16, 1985. He was born to Karen and Steve Flacco and is of Irish and
Italian descent. He played football, baseball and basketball at Audubon High School and was the
starting quarterback. Flacco was listed as No. 39 among quarterback prospects in the class of 2003.
Flacco s college career started in Pittsburgh where he was redshirted for a team that went 8 5. In 2004,
he became the backup quarterback that limited his playing time behind starter Tyler Palko. He only
played in three games against Ohio, Nebraska, and South Florida. He finished the season with one
completion for 11 yards. At Delaware Flacco saw his first full time action in the 2006 season. He
threw for 2,783 yards, and 18 touchdowns with 10 interceptions and Delaware struggled to a 5 6
record. They missed the FCS Playoffs. In the 2007 season he led his team to an 8 3 regular season
record and had 4,263 yards, 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Flacco set 20 school records during
his career at Delaware. In early September 2009, a 20 by 30 foot poster of Flacco was added to the
Delaware Stadium. While at Delaware, Flacco was negative about his chances to play in the

The Membrane And Its Effects On Human Development
It is generally accepted that resting CaMKIIβ bundles and stabilizes actin cytoskeleton. Transient
activation of CaMKIIβ relaxes cytoskeleton, promotes actin polymerization and CaMKIIβ
recruitment, and favors cytoskeleton growth. This model has been shown in both synaptogenesis
(Okamoto et al., 2007) and OL maturation (Waggener et al., 2013). Based on this theory, we proposed
that prolonged CaMKIIβ activation by NMDA R mediated Ca2+ influx leads to destabilization of
actin cytoskeleton and membrane disintegration in mature OLs. Although our experiments
unambiguously showed that NMDA R activation results in CaMKIIβ activation, direct proof that links
CaMKIIβ activation and membrane reduction are lacking. All the existing CaMKIIβ inhibitors ...

As mentioned in chapter 5, a repeated measure experiment using OLs from CaMKIIβA303R mice will
be the best way to investigate this question. The CaMKIIβA303R mutant retains its ability to bundle F
actin, but loses its Ca2+/CaM binding capacity. Based on our proposed model, Tat induced [Ca2+]i
increase should have no effect on OL membrane area since Ca2+/CaM can not bind and activate
CaMKIIβA303R, and promotes its release from actin cytoskeleton.
Most of our experiments are done in mice cells. Since HIV is a human disease, we used an hBrnAgg
model to try to verify our finding in human cells. We thought that the hBrnAgg model serves our
experiments best because 1) it mimics the in vivo environment with the presence of all major CNS cell
types, 2) myelination has been observed in the model by other investigators, thus fulfill the needs of
studying effect of HIV/Tat on both OLs and myelin, and 3) the hBrnAgg model can be maintained for
a long period of time (up to 60 days), made it a good model to study long term effect of HIV/Tat.
Our immunostaining experiments suggested that there are far less OLs in the aggregates than we
expected. Under EM, plenty of synaptic structures, both symmetric and asymmetric, were observed in
the hBrnAgg. However, cells with typical mature OL characteristics, including dark cytoplasm and
nucleus, elongated, thin strands of endoplasmic reticulum; numerous mitochondria, and stacks of
Golgi apparatus, were rarely

The Demon Lover By Elizabeth Bowen
Appearances Can Be Deceiving Mrs. Drover, the protagonist in the short story, The Demon Lover by
Elizabeth Bowen, finds herself haphazardly scrambling out of her abandoned townhome in London
and scampering into a taxi in need of refuge, only to find her worst nightmare waiting for her. The taxi
at the denouement of the short story represents Mrs. Drover s escape from the dark memories of the
old house. As soon as she feels sheltered from the house, the taxi whips around and zooms away as
she is left beating helplessly on the doors trying to escape. As Mrs. Dovers delightful and safehaven of

Drover s fate was not going to end well. The setting clouds, already piling up ink dark (Bowen 1206)
gives us the feeling that something dark, mysterious, or dangerous is awaiting in the distance. As she
enters the house dead air came out to meet her. (Bowen 1106), and there was small fragments of light
lingering in through the shuttered up windows. There was a bruise on the wall from the door handle
banging against the wall with too much force, and claw marks (Bowen 1208) left from when the piano
was moved away. The dark feeling was slightly exhausted and the outcome looked like it would
brighten when the rain had stopped; the sidewalks steamily shone. (Bowen 1211). The final detail was
driver and passenger, not six inches between them, remained for an eternity eye to eye. (Bowen 1212)
gives you the illusion that she knows the driver, that over the long haul of the story takes her out into
the forsaken streets. Mansfield also presents the overall emotion that Rosemary is insincere about her
charity to Ms. Smith. The first fragment of evidence is presented when she meets Ms. Smith and
thinks How extraordinary! (Mansfield 1107), and that to Rosemary it all seems like an adventure and
something out of a book. Rosemary continues to imagine telling all of her friends I just simply took
her home with me! (Mansfield 1107). Once Ms. Smith is in the home, Rosemary re dresses her so that

The Key Human Resource Management
Human resource management is the organizational function of planning for human resource needs,
recruitment, compensation, selection, development, evaluation, and handling of grievances and labor
relations (Singh, 2016, p. 362). The key human resource competencies as outlined by the Healthcare
Leadership Alliance (HLA) include: communication and relationship management; leadership;
professionalism; knowledge of the healthcare environment and business skills. The healthcare
leadership alliance consists of the following organizations: American College of Healthcare
Executives (ACHE); American College of Physician Executives (ACPE); American Organization of
Nurse Executives (AONE); Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA); Healthcare
Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS); Medical Group Management Association
(MGMA) and its educational affiliate, the American College of Medical Practice Executives
(ACMPE). Communication and relationship management: a long term care administrator should have
the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers, be able to

Grace Paley Father
Grace Paley is an American writer and poet that is best known for her short stories that portray the
everyday life of ordinary people. The short stories that are to be analyzed are Samuel, Mother, and A
Conversation with my Father. The common component shared between these three stories is the
history of everyday life and how individuals deal with it. Grace Paley lived through some of the world
s most historic events, and watched society and the people around her gradually change as she got
older. Paley has been able to study and observe the everyday lives of men and woman for many years
and successfully exemplifies this in her writing. The purpose of this author study is to understand what
influenced Grace Paley to write these stories and what message she wanted to get across to all of her
readers. The purpose is also to fully comprehend her stories and to see how they could be related to
her own life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She grew up speaking Yiddish, Russian, and English and was the youngest of three. Paley began
writing when she was in her teens and was heavily influenced by W. H. Auden, who she also studied
poetry with. After college she then became an outspoken activist that supported feminism, anti war,
and anti nuclear demonstrations and became very involved with her local politics. It would be a world
without militarism and racism and greed and where women don t have to fight for their place in the
world (Paley). Paley believed in world peace and wanted everyone to be treated equally. Paley had a
long and fulfilling life and saw what the world was really capable of and she wanted to change it for
the better. She also understood that the lives of people were something worth writing about because

Trove Character Analysis
How to properly build a character in Trove
Have you ever asked a player on Trove what their power rank is and was astonished by their answer?
Then this is how they got where they are and what you will need to get your character or character up
to the desired level.
The first thing you need to do when it comes to becoming a top Trovain player is to look at what gives
the power to you as the player. There are three big things that make up your characters. The first one is
the level of the character. Having a max level thirty character is one of the first things you need. The
second is to keep your eye on your mastery, each level you add to your mastery you get power rank
added to all your characters. Thus, bringing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another key factor you will notice as you are leveling up your character is you are unlocking gem
slots. This is key to the power rank portion of Trove, and that s why you need to be level 30 because
by doing so you will have unlocked all gem slots and allow you to insert the maximum number of
gems onto that character.
After talking about leveling and gems a little I will go in a little deeper in the matter. To make sure you
can get into the desired portals as you level. Your face, hat, and weapon you should be changing out
with the items you pick up from dungeons if it will give you more power rank. Your end gear type will
be called Stellar gear but you will end up having to buy that from another player using the in game
currency but that will be needed later. So, in the mean time you will focus on what gear you can find
at the end of dungeons. This is also applied to the gems you will get from opening the gem boxes you
receive for completing dungeons. You want to equip the highest power ranked gem which is
commonly received after opening seventy gem boxes.
The prime goal of you leveling and stick on gear is to reach ten thousand power rank and be level
thirty. You should be able to do such by leveling the radiant gems up to level fifteen that you will find
in Uber eight world. Once you get into Uber nine world with your ten thousand power rank then you
will need to change your game play a little on what gems you will equip

New Right Movement In The 1980 s
The 1980 s
The 80 s as it was referred, was an era that reconstructed the traditional outlook of
Global Society, Economics, and Politics. For many in the United States, this embrace of change
was welcomed with open arms, in hopes to sever any connections to the Reformed and
unconventional movements of the radical 60 s and 70 s. With the end of Jimmy Carter s
Presidential Rule, this was a symbolic close to the chapter of a troubled time. We will now
journey through this decade in details, expounding on the uprising of the NEW RIGHT
movement, The Successful but yet Impacted presence of the Regan Term, and The Glorified
Birth of MODERN POPULAR CULTURE.

buy more and invest more. This was to create the trickle Down Effect ultimately resulting in
the rebuild of the American economy. Because of this Economical idea, the United States
experienced multiple Highs and Lows, starting from the recession of 1982, resulting in a stock
market crash in 1987. Regan s Economical Viewpoints are still recognized today. Many believe
that if you do cut taxes for the rich, it will allow them to spend more in which will funds the
pockets of the middle class. Whilst assisting in the revival of the American economy, Regan like
his predecessors, focused on the stop of the spread on communism as well as the Thawing of
the Cold war. The Regan Administration believed that the United States should financially and

Explain Why Did The North Win The Civil War
Why did the North win the Civil War?
One of the most important event in the history of the United States is the war of the North and South
of 1861 1865, the Civil War. The main causes of the war lay in the field of economics. In the North, in
the period preceding the war, a powerful industry and a banking sector were created. The open slave
trade and slavery did not bring such fabulous profits as the exploitation of thousands and thousands of
free people in terrible conditions. The northern clans needed millions of new workers for their
enterprises. And slaves in agriculture could replace thousands of agricultural machines, increasing
profitability.

The Differences Between China And Western Europe
Imagine living in America and it not being well America. There would be different ways of
agriculture. Different languages. Different religious beliefs. Having a different way of living in
society, economically and politically. Everything would be different if China would have went about
and conquered Western Europe during the 14 1500 s.
There are many things in history that can mark the milestone differences between China and Western
Europe. No one really knows when Chinese culture really began, however Chinese civilization began
near the Yellow River (Huang He) becoming North China, and Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) indicating
South China. The first Dynasty, the Xia (Hsia) Dynasty began in about 2070 or 2205 BCE. Historians
have found proof of the wheel first being used in China during this time showing urban culture did
exist. The Shang Dynasty followed introducing the first Chinese Government. A lot of the basic
Chinese culture was introduced during the Zhou (Chou) Dynasty such as the Mandate of Heaven.
China contains a lot of history throughout the years. There were battles between the states, many new
emperors and leaders, as well as new technologies. All of which brought three great Chinese
philosophies; Daoism, Confucianism, and Legalism. It wasn t until about 581 CE that China was
reunifies under the leader, Sui Wendi. Wendi linked North and South China together by the Grand
Canal. It was during the Song Dynasty, in 960 CE, that China promoted better tools. The

  • 2. Character Sketch Of Tolstoy 2 Tolstoy s Character. Tolstoy was a multi dimensional man. In his long career he had been a teacher and educational theorist, a philosopher and social critic, a successful farmer and paterfamilias, a soldier, and a prophet. Above all, however, he was a great artist, and it is on his fiction that his fame at present rests. The literary career of this great writer of the Russian land (as his contemporary Turgenev called him) may be divided into three parts: the early period of literary apprenticeship (1851 63), the period of the great novels (1863 77), and the later period of preoccupation with the message of his religious teaching (1878 1910). The works of the early period may be regarded as the school in which Tolstoy taught himself to write. He isolated the themes and developed the literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His account focuses heavily on both sides tactical successes and failures from maneuvers in battle to how they handled occupied territory. Before the French surrender, Pierre s brush with execution becomes a cutting satire of French bureaucracy, which functions so badly that Pierre is nearly executed simply because a general was interrupted while he was deciding Pierre s sentence. However, the Russians also become objects of Tolstoy s critique. He depicts disorganization and a lack of professionalism on both sides. The French failures are not limited to their ineffective bureaucracy. Since the battle of Borodino and the looting of Moscow, Tolstoy writes, the French army had borne within itself, as it were, the chemical conditions of its decomposition Napoleon and his generals seem to have good intentions they order their men not to loot and treat the Russians they meet respectfully. However, the privation and lack of discipline in the French army means that the foot soldiers eagerly and violently loot Moscow at their first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on cultrual cultural deprivation the hispanic... Cultural Deprivation: The Hispanic Challenge nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Why do some groups not succeed in academic settings? One theory brought up in Understanding inequality suggests that the gap in the socioeconomic status drives the inequalities in the school system. The low and working class have less time and income to intervene with schooling. This means they have less time to meet with teachers, hire tutors, and provide continuous transportation. Therefore the lower class can t possibly compete with the middle and upper classes. Angela Valenzuela gives the accounts of some Hispanic students experiences in school. These students feel that it is the inferior nature of the schools in the US that contribute to the low success ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Huntington, unlike previous immigrants, Hispanics wish to retain a dual culture. This presents them with the culture clash of two varying views on culture as well as education. There are several factors that have made this culture of immigrants assimilations so much different than the past immigrants that America has so fondly welcomed with open arms. These include contiguity, scale illegality regional concentration, persistence and historical presence. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The fact that the US shares such a large boarder with Mexico is enhanced by the great economic differences on each side. The income gap between the United States and Mexico is the largest between any two contiguous countries in the world (Huntington). The incentive to immigrate is obvious, and allows Latinos to remain in contact with their family and friends while making a living in the US. Because the passage between these boarders is so accessible, it has lead to immigration on a grand scale. The persistence of Hispanics in migrating has lead to having Mexicans account for nearly half of all immigration to the US and has changed Mexican s standing from the minority to the majority in many areas. This regional concentration has slowed assimilation because dispersal is essential for this to take place. An example of regional concentration slowing this process down to almost a halt is in Miami in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Amores Perros Essay Amores Perros is a film that exploits the economy and the people of Mexico City to display the animalistic side of the human nature and means of survival. The skillful usage of three different social and economic standings in the movie creates an image of Mexico for many who have not experienced or understand Mexican society. Many traditional Native medicines and healing practices were discouraged with the advent of Western medicine, but now there is a movement to return to traditional ways (Zubek, 1994, p. 1924). Modern Western medicine treats the symptoms to cure a diseased state when the body is out of homeostasis. Native American healing traditions do this as well with herbs and plants suited to the purpose. These Native healing traditions also include sacred rituals, chants, and purification rites to help bring the spirit and mind of the afflicted back into balance. Where they disagreed the most was with the use of traditional healing in the intensive care units, only 16.9% agreed with the use of this treatment for serious illness, such as cardiac or respiratory compromise, whether in the hospital (21.2% agreed) or as outpatients (26.4% agreed). Nearly half (48.6%) agreed with using traditional medicines for chronic illnesses, such as non insulin dependent diabetes or Parkinson s disease (Zubek, 1994, p. 1926). One instance where physicians were unwilling to allow their patients to use Native medicine was while the patient is in the hospital, because the physician could be held legally responsible for any treatment administered while admitted under their care. There is also the problem of differentiating between legitimate Native healing practitioners and those who would take advantage of anyone not aware of the proper rituals and techniques that need to be performed (Zubek, 1994, p. 1929). This could be overcome by having a formalized licensing organization such as is used by Western practitioners (i.e. American Society of Clinical Pathology [ASCP]). • 7. Great Lakes Water Quality Essay Water quality in the Great Lakes is something that has been a criticall issue in the Great Lakes Region for a number of years. Water quality can be anything that affects the benefits humans derives from water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is possible. Many invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the Great Lakes. The ecosystem and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion. I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the Great Lakes is to prevent the problem from happening before it already has. Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100 inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel from European waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes. The invading species began to attach itself to almost every solid thing in the Great Lakes. These can stick to boats, damage structures such as docks and piers, and they can clog water intake pipes, which are used for drinking and industrial use. Invasive species like the zebra ... • 9. Rise Of American Feudalism Feudalism was the predominant way of life before capitalism. During the feudal era, everyone lived life according to the privileges and obligations that were associated with their social standing. The interest of everyone one the manor was to please a higher lord s: vassals sought to pay their debts and lords would provide residents of the manor with the means of subsistence in exchange for their labor. On a manor, there was no currency; all obligations were paid in kind or were done to repay someone else for their service. With the rise of capitalism and the spread of money into rural areas, vassals began to commodity their labor, and lords began to commodity their land. Commodifying land and labor allowed lords and vassals to receive more cash on a regular basis, yet the payments they received were still not steady and constant. As more vassals and lords commodified land and labor, land and labor soon became regarded as commodities. In feudalism, labor was seen as a relationship between the laborer and the lord, or the person receiving the labor. With the spread of monetization, however, the concept of abstract labor was introduced: a laborer could now sell his capacity/power and ability to do labor and the purchaser would be the owner of anything that the laborer produced (i.e. if someone buys someone s capacity to cook a meal, the meal that the laborer produces with the boot capacity belongs to the buyer). This new way of understanding labor soon became widespread and labor feudal perceptions of labor were abandoned; labor had become a commodity, part of a capitalist economy. Moreover, land was now thought of as a commodity that could be bought and sold, unlike in feudalism where it was only seen as a lease from a higher lord that could be exploited but never owned. • 10. Cardiac Muscle Structure Structure The cardiac muscle is only found in the heart. This muscle had one nucleus and is an involuntary striated muscle. Cardiac muscle also contains intercalated disc, which acts as a junction between the two muscle cells in order to communicate. Also, the cell contains no motor nerve terminals. The extracellular calcium ions and the cells of the heart act as a stimulus allowing it to contract via electrical impulse. The cardiomyocytes/ myocardiocyteal muscle cells and the one nucleus makes up the cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscles are the muscles that are under the control of the somatic nervous system (voluntary) and are striated. Also they have many nuclei and are triggered into motion via electrical impulses from the motor neuron terminals connected to the muscle fibres. These motor neurons are coordinated by the central nervous system and are networked. A bundle of collagen fibres known as tendons is usually attached to bones of the muscle. The muscle is made up of individual components known as myocytes. These are made up of myofibers. Role The main role of the cardiac muscle is to keep the heart beating. The muscle has a large number of mitochondria and numerous myoglobins because the muscle is different to other muscle cells as it never gets tired and it is to provide a good blood supply. ... • 18. Slavery In The Old South This historical analysis will define the argument put forth by James Oakes (1998) about the misguided view of slavery as a paternalistic system of economics in the Old South. The paternalistic/honorific view of slavery is incorrect because of the underlying system of capitalism, which allowed slaveholders to exploit, commercialize, and commoditize slaves for profit. More so, Oakes (1998) shows how the industrial Northern was simply a different form of capitalism that often cooperated with the agrarian South in exploiting slaves as a method of low cost labor. Machine technology allowed northerner manufacturers to exploit low wage laborers in industry, yet the South relied heavily on the exploitation of slaves for agrarian production. Oakes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only conflict between the two capitalist systems was the outdated methods of human labor that the South relied upon to compete with the increasingly industrialized methods of farming that the north was using as they expanded into western territories. Oakes (1998) defines the capitalist system as the driving force for economic conflicts between these two regions of the United States: Having repudiated the suggestion that all poor people in America ought to be enslaved, conservatives argued instead that slavery, as practiced in the South, represented the fulfillment of destiny (Oakes, 1998, p. 215). This economic view of low cost labor defines how Oakes (1998) understands the underlying profitability of a capitalistic system, which temporarily sustained a cooperative relationship between the North and South. The difference between these two societies was the method in which low cost labor could be exploited through wage slavery in the North and outright slavery in the South. The roots of capitalism are also found in the willingness of colonial slaveholders to join the American Revolution because it would free them from the exploitative bonds of British capitalism that hindered their ascension to greater wealth as land owners and slave holders: Colonial slaveholders had enthusiastically joined the Revolution against Britain: most saw no conflict between its libertarian principles and the perpetuation of slavery (Oakes, 1998, p.241). These are important aspects of the underlying profitability of slavery in the capitalistic system of economics, which often overrode the principles in favor of gaining access to low cost slave labor during the antebellum era. • 20. A World Of Difference In James Sire s The Universe Next Door A World of Difference (Introduction): In the book The Universe Next Door written by James Sire begins with a brief explanation of what a Worldview is. As stated in the book by Sire, The essence of a worldview lies deep in the inner recesses of the human self. A Worldview involves the mind, but it is first of all a commitment, a matter of the soul. It is spiritual orientation more than it is a matter of mind alone (pg.20, Sire). The author states that it is from the heart that all one s thoughts and actions proceed. The basis of the introduction of Sire s book is answering the seven basic questions of worldview, including what is prime reality the really real? what is the nature of external reality, that is, the world around us? what is a human being? what happens to a person after death? • 21. RAPPING ABOUT RAP Essay Rap music is on its way to becoming one of the most popular forms of music on the market today. Although rap has only been popular for the last 15 years, it can be traced back to the days of slavery and even further to the tribes of Africa. Rap is used now as it was used for the past few centuries, as a form of communication. This music has been a way for the young African American s to speak out about their lives and the struggles they go through. Like rock n roll and other forms of music that achieve national attention, rap is being blamed for corrupting our youth. There is a new type of rap music out called quot;Gangster Rap quot;. It is said that quot;Grand Wizard quot; invented quot;scratching quot; while practicing at home (Greenberg 15), however Andrei Strobert, a Brooklyn based scholar, musician and artist was quoted in an article by Harry Allen about the roots of rap music, quot; The scratch that you hear in hip hop is similar to the African sekere quot;. She goes on to explain, quot;A sekere is a big gourd with beads around it quot;. She also noted that many of the sounds rappers use in her studio are from the Imo tribe of Nigeria (80). There are many comparisons between rap and African music but one comparison you don t hear about too often is the influence by Puerto Ricans living in New York at the time rap started popping up. Juan Flores brings up this comparison in his article, quot;Recital of decimals and aguinaldos in the Puerto Rican folk tradition involved methods of improvisation and alternation much like those typical of rap performances, while the tongue twisting (trabalengua) style of some plena singing is an even more direct antecedent. More important, perhaps, just as with doo wop and rhumba, there is a fascinating quot;fit quot; between Puerto Rican quot;clave quot; and characteristic rap rhythms quot;(583). For this paper, I will identify a natural or man made disaster that are currently brandishing in the world and are providing news headlines or happening within my very community. Current Natural or Man Made Disaster The current natural disaster I will be discussing pertains to the flooding in Houston, Texas. Preventability measures are taken to prepare for disasters that are known risk for happening. Although not all disastrous events can be prevented initially, steps can be taken to reduce the impact and after effects when they do occur. For instance, with the Houston flood, numerous reservoirs were constructed to help control some overflow of some 67 billion gallons of water. Imminence coincides with predictability in most cases and also helps the planning of prevention and control when it can be implemented. Weather forecasters can be detrimental when it comes to predicting a flood as this can predict expected rainfall duration and amounts. The scope and number of casualties is usually tallied during and after a disastrous event as the baseline is always zero prior to the event happening. This specific criteria represents the number of people displaced, injured or killed per event happening. Intensity is typically measured before an event to help garner some sort of ability to prepare for an expected incoming crisis. Intensity can also be measured during a disaster to help foretell fatality rates and also overall damage incurrence. Application of Disaster Management Stages Prevention, preparation and planning, responsiveness, and recovery are all the stages of managing a disaster. Prevention is the first stage in disaster management. This stage occurs before a disaster takes place and identifies possible risks. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We have lasik surgery in order to fix our eyes, People... you can t fix stupid! by Ron White . So let me start, what comes into your mind when you hear the word lasik? So basically lasik means an eye correct vision which needs a laser to reshape the inner cornea. There are three types of eye conditions, the nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism. Too much diversity in their results is unacceptable to FDA so they keep a close watch on the makeup and effectiveness of the drugs and how they impact the human body. Both of those companies were under another company called boots who, up until 1986, held the patent rights to ibuprofen. After 1986 many generic brand labels began to produce ibuprofen. The rise in generic ibuprofen completely shut out all but one of the name brand producers of ibuprofen as shown by the disappearance of Nuprin. Generic drugs have destroyed the market for name brand drugs by being cheaper and just as efficient When a generic drug product is approved, it has met rigorous standards established by the FDA with respect to identity, strength, quality, purity, and potency. However, some variability can and does occur during manufacturing, for both brand name and generic drugs. When a drug, generic or brand name, is mass produced, very small variations in purity, size, strength, and other parameters are permitted. FDA limits how much variability is acceptable (FDA). This lack in difference of quality has allowed generic drugs to out sell many name brand drugs since people understand that what they are buying are practically the same thing so why would they buy anything more expensive. Generic manufacturers are able to sell their products for lower prices because they are not required to repeat the costly clinical trials of new drugs and generally do not pay for costly advertising, marketing, and promotion. In addition, multiple generic companies are often approved to market a single product; this creates competition in the market place, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Founded in 1966, this company was formally known as Sound of Music (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). It was mainly a retailer of audio components. However, in the early 1980s, Best Buy began to add additional products. It was not uncommon for the next 30 years for more products to be added as technology advanced. In 1983, the company changed its name to Best Buy Co. and operated as a superstore (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). The entire look of this company was changing drastically. This would include the sales staff as well. Originally, the staff had worked on a commission based salary. However, in 1989, this structure was eliminated and sales associates transformed into educators that assisted customers in learning about the products offered in the stores (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). Basically, the customer took control and the employees were there as guidance. The idea of having control in buying electronics became more common as the technology developed. In order to let the consumer have more control, the company expanded further by developing and releasing BestBuy.com. This website was launched in 2000 to give customers a choice between visiting a physical store and purchasing products online (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). The year 2000 was a great year for Best Buy. • 29. Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education Ward, 2005); President Obama s defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012 (Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government s support for gifted education has been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which guarantees all children between the ages of three and twenty one with specifically identified disabilities a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment in conformance with an Individualized Education Program (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by federal government is severely lacking (Brown, 2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act (2015) is encouraging for gifted education as it promotes professional development to support high ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data publicly available, and advocates for research and the distribution of research that supports best practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities, which is to support Initiatives [that] develop and scale up models serving students who are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs (USDOE, 2017). Nomination and Confirmatory Practices In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman (2013) identified nine gifted identification methods she found through reviewing 103 articles. These methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher, parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of evidence (i.e. Performance Based Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of giftedness often align more with the latter than the former. For instance, Parsons, a man who strongly supports Big Brother, is turned into the Thought Police when his own daughter convicts him of saying Down with Big Brother in his sleep (Orwell 233). This demonstrates that the education children receive manipulates their minds into thinking the way the government wants. Parsons daughter learned to turn in people who did not support Big Brother even if it was a family member. The Party also uses the Ministry of Truth to manipulate its population with skewed history. Winston s job is to change records of history so people only know the history that the government wants them to know. Through these lies, the government is able to control people s thoughts and how they think. Orwell shows that people have lost their thoughts without even noticing since they have been taught to always think like so. He uses this to demonstrate that if man [does] not become aware of the assaults on his personal freedom, he will lose his right of thought (Bossche). There was a strong belief at the time that children from broken homes were at the risk of school failure, delinquency, and psychological disorders (Jolivet, 2009). As divorce has become more common, THE WAY DIVORCE IMPACTS CHILDREN 5 legislation changed and decided that the spouse no longer had to be at fault. • 40. Post Cold War Dbq Essay Following WWII and during the Cold War, there was a sense of instability in Europe. To counteract this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal. Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. For these reasons and many more, certain officials wanted to create a better sense of unity in Europe. In 1957, with the Treaty of Rome, the European Economic Committee (EEC) was formed. Officials ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Britain in the years after 1950 was especially concerned at what joining the EEC would bring. The British finance minister Harold Macmillan worried that by joining they would damage their internal commerce system even if they were gaining new outside trading opportunities (Document 7). As finance minister, he was likely thinking purely money and not acknowledging the other factors associated with unification. The EEC did not seem to be the perfect fit but staying out of it would put out the impression of isolation. Britain wanted a way of associating with this initiative in Europe in such a way as to benefit us all . Those in Britain did not appear to make a concrete decision; over 30 years after Macmillan issued his statement Margaret Thatcher voiced a similar opinion. In 1988, England had joined the EEC 15 years earlier but there were still topics of unanimity England was unsure about. In this case, Thatcher was concerned that the Single European Act which seeked a single currency and market would take away the uniqueness of each individual country. Thatcher believed that Europe would benefit from being more united and with a greater sense of common purpose, but it must be in a way which preserves the different traditions, parliamentary powers, and a sense of pride in one s culture (Document ... • 43. The Membrane And Its Effects On Human Development It is generally accepted that resting CaMKIIβ bundles and stabilizes actin cytoskeleton. Transient activation of CaMKIIβ relaxes cytoskeleton, promotes actin polymerization and CaMKIIβ recruitment, and favors cytoskeleton growth. This model has been shown in both synaptogenesis (Okamoto et al., 2007) and OL maturation (Waggener et al., 2013). Based on this theory, we proposed that prolonged CaMKIIβ activation by NMDA R mediated Ca2+ influx leads to destabilization of actin cytoskeleton and membrane disintegration in mature OLs. Although our experiments unambiguously showed that NMDA R activation results in CaMKIIβ activation, direct proof that links CaMKIIβ activation and membrane reduction are lacking. All the existing CaMKIIβ inhibitors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned in chapter 5, a repeated measure experiment using OLs from CaMKIIβA303R mice will be the best way to investigate this question. The CaMKIIβA303R mutant retains its ability to bundle F actin, but loses its Ca2+/CaM binding capacity. Based on our proposed model, Tat induced [Ca2+]i increase should have no effect on OL membrane area since Ca2+/CaM can not bind and activate CaMKIIβA303R, and promotes its release from actin cytoskeleton. Most of our experiments are done in mice cells. Since HIV is a human disease, we used an hBrnAgg model to try to verify our finding in human cells. We thought that the hBrnAgg model serves our experiments best because 1) it mimics the in vivo environment with the presence of all major CNS cell types, 2) myelination has been observed in the model by other investigators, thus fulfill the needs of studying effect of HIV/Tat on both OLs and myelin, and 3) the hBrnAgg model can be maintained for a long period of time (up to 60 days), made it a good model to study long term effect of HIV/Tat. Our immunostaining experiments suggested that there are far less OLs in the aggregates than we expected. Under EM, plenty of synaptic structures, both symmetric and asymmetric, were observed in the hBrnAgg. However, cells with typical mature OL characteristics, including dark cytoplasm and nucleus, elongated, thin strands of endoplasmic reticulum; numerous mitochondria, and stacks of Golgi apparatus, were rarely ...
