United States Entry Into World War I
Commendable or Contempible: The United States entry into World War I
37,466,904. This is the total number of casualties during World War 1. The United States accounted
for 323,018 of those deaths. Almost 40 million deaths could have been avoided without World War 1.
So was the damage caused by World War 1 worth it? Was it beneficial for the United States to enter
the Great War. Yes, it was. The benefits accompanied with America entering the Great War largely
outweigh the detriments that the war brought. The United States should enter the Great War because
the war will benefit the United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful
military, and the end of the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women ... Show more

In the early twentieth century, before the war began, the role of women was already changing
drastically. Women were working more, gaining a better education and having fewer children. Then,
during the war, women played a crucial role in aiding the war efforts. One way women assisted in the
war was moving into jobs that were previously vacated by men who were drafted into the war. Women
also assisted in munitions factories. These are factories that make war materials. Women could have
sewed uniforms or helped make weapons. These factories were the number one employer for women
during 1918. After the introduction of conscription in 1916 women began to work in jobs that were
traditional reserved for men. Employment rates for women during World War I went up from 23.6%
(1914) to 46.7% (1918). Because the population of women in America benefited the war efforts
greatly, in 1918, the women s suffrage amendment was passed in senate with the necessary 2/3 votes.
America s involvement in the Great War led directly to the passing of the 19th amendment, granting
women the right to vote.
It is now clear that the United States should enter the Great War because the war will benefit the
United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful military, and the end of
the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women to vote. The minimal

Sarasota County Real Estate Case Study
On January 16, 2009, the Sarasota County Board of County Commission granted approval of a
rezoning from Open Use Rural, 1 unit/10 acres (OUR) to Residential Estate, 1 unit/2acres with a
binding site plan named Boleyn Lake Estates. The original project was approved for the development
of 25 lots consisting of single family homes. This approved project was designed in accordance with
the Sarasota County Conservation Subdivision zoning regulations. As the major objective originally
and currently for this Conservation Subdivision is to reduce land impacts while embracing the natural
systems for the subject property.
Therefore, on behalf of our clients, Sam Rodgers Homes, Incorporated, the intentions for pursuing this
rezoning petition is to obtain proper zoning that will allow development of a conservation subdivision.
The subject site is comprised of five adjoining parcels (PID ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Sarasota County Zoning Code.
The proposed amendment will be an increase from the previously approved plans by 54 lots. This
increase has minimal impacts while providing additional housing opportunities to the residents of
Sarasota County. The current proposed Conservation Subdivision density was determined by
avoidance of developing 60% of the land. In studying the surrounding land uses the proposal is
consistent and will not adversely impact adjoining properties. As found, to the north, Open Use

Persuasive Essay On Prostitution
Unicef recently reported that an estimated 1.8 million children enter the sex trade each year. Some are
in the United States, but the worst abuses take place in countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh,
Nepal, and Cambodia (Kristoff), but while saving some life outside is very diverse, some girls go on
to be very successful while others return to the life of prostitution.
Rescue efforts that are effective in removing children permanently from sexual slavery involve under
cover investigation, and people who are willing to risk their lives. Rescue efforts involve great risk on
the part of the rescuer. One of the risks the raids are being up against the police while being a
government agent in a way, some police officers are bribed by the owners of the young girls to keep
quiet. Kristoff lists that police officers are taking bribes. In the book Sold by Nicholas Kristoff he lists
Shahanna and Lakshmi having a conversation about police, saying Policeman are supposed to stop
people like Mumtaz from selling girls, she says. But she gives this one money each week and he looks
the other way (Kristoff). The girls are having a conversation about police corruption and how Mumtaz
keeps them away. Mumtaz bribes the policeman into being quiet about the illegal selling of girls to
keep her safe, this creates a risk for rescuers because they don t know who they can trust. The police
are armed and can be dangerous since they are corrupt. Another reason rescuing the girls is risky is
because the rescuers must go undercover in the process of organizing these raids on the brothels is the
gathering of information and evidence from the undercover agent going into the brothel, especially
being in constant danger of a pimp catching, and killing him, while being inside the brothel, the article
Raiding a Brothel in India said International Justice Mission, a Washington based aid group that fights
human trafficking, had spotted Chutki while prowling undercover looking for prostituted children
(Kristoff). The undercover agents are in danger when being inside the brothels gathering intel. The
agents remain anonymous in reports to protect them for future purposes.
Another challenge rescuers face is that even after they

Introduces her four major concerns illustrated in Silas Marner namely village life.
Within the very first paragraph on the book, Gorge Elliot introduces her four major concerns
illustrated in Silas Marner namely village life (of the late 18th century), superstition and belief,
alienation and historical change (in this case specifically that caused by industrial revolution and the
ending of the Napoleonic Wars). These concerns are closely woven together in the story (and in some
cases real life) as can once again be seen in this opening two paragraphs and often can be looked at in
relation to one another.
Village life was probably Gorge Elliot s primary focus when writing the novel and her anthropological
investigations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another thing these country folk are distrustful of are things outside their realm of knowledge, which
is fairly small. Anything which they do not comprehend or have not experienced, such as the weavers
and their trade, is at once dangerous and suspicious. Associated with this is the concept of continuity
that is something very important to the village folk. It is thus that something which is new or which
roots are unknown is regarded with suspicion. As the paragraph says how was a man to be explained
unless you at least knew somebody who knew his father or mother?
This brings is to the theme of superstition. As mentioned above the country folk are very much
suspicious of things they do not understand. Since they are unable to rationally and logically
comprehend the nature of such things, they start formulating superstitions regarding these things. This
is why the shepherd, though he had good reason to believe that the bag held nothing but flaxen thread,
or else the long rolls of strong linen spun from that thread, was not quite sure this trade of
waving...could be carried on entirely without the help of the Evil One. Natural human inclination is to
create irrational beliefs, usually linked to the supernatural, about things that are mysterious and
unknown. Further examples of this can be seen further on in the novel, when, for example, myth is

The Simpsons as a Sitcom Essay
The Simpsons as a Sitcom
The Simpsons is an example of an American sitcom. A sitcom is situation comedy, which is when the
same setting and same characters appear in every episode. Examples of sitcoms are programs such as
The Crosby Show and more recent sitcoms such as Friends . Sitcoms surfaced in the 1950 s in
America showing the ideal family. Slowly sitcoms started to show the reality of life and dealt with
social issues such as divorce and unemployment. Sitcoms have become very popular because people
could relate to the program and sitcoms show problems, which happen in every day life in a light
hearted way. These are some of the reasons why The Simpsons is very successful and ... Show more

Maggie is shown as an ordinary baby who sucks on a dummy. She fits the stereotypical role of a baby.
In the opening credits authority figures such as the police are made fun out and are shown as lazy and
bad at their jobs this creates humour in the programme.
Narrative structure is used very often in The Simpsons. Narrative structure is the way in which a story
is organised. Narrative usually consists of five stages. These are orientation, complication, resolution,
evaluation and re orientation. This system is used in The Simpsons to create humour and also let the
audience know what to expect. A good example of this structure is shown in one Simpson s episode
called Roasting on an open fire. It starts of or orientates when the family are at a school production for
Christmas setting the scene and letting the audience know that it has something to do with Christmas.
Then comes the complication when Bart gets a tattoo and they have to use all their Christmas money
to get it removed. Also Homer doesn t get his Christmas bonus. To resolve this Homer gets another job
as father Christmas but doesn t get enough money. He bets it on a dog and loses everything. Bart and

The Representation of Gender in Bond s Films Goldeneye and Goldfinger
There are two films in particular that I have chosen to look at that show how the representation of
gender in Bond movies has changed throughout the years. These two films are Goldeneye and
Goldfinger.
There are many reasons that the representation of gender has changed between these two films. The
most obvious being a change in society. The two films were made thirty one years apart. Women are
now accepted as being something more that just producing babies and being there to be slept with.
Between the Bond films Licensed to Kill and Goldeneye a lot of changes in characters were made.
This is due to a lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This demonstrates exactly how women s roles have changed.
We see Bond as a hero from the start of both Goldeneye and Goldfinger the difference being that in
the earlier film, Bond used the woman, who he is kissing as a shield to save himself from being shot.
This shows that he has a higher opinion of himself and complete disregard for women. It shows how
women are represented as being disposable.
In the later film Goldeneye Bond puts Natalias life first, when the train is about to blow up. This
shows how representation of gender has changed from the earlier film. Bond now sees Natalia as an
equal and wants to ensure that she is safe before himself.
Another example of how in the earlier films women were seen to be sex objects is when Bond is
talking to a pretty blond woman, but as soon as Felix comes arrives Bond slaps the woman on the
bottom and send her on her way declaring that she is no longer required because its mans talk.
In Goldfinger women are there for amusement, a trophy figure. Goldfinger himself demonstrates this
himself by paying Gill to be seen with him.
Goldeneye shows how women are more equal. Zenia Onatopp shows how women are being
represented. When racing with Bond she is equally as good. She challenges him and is very assertive.
Zenia is represented in the same way as the men from Goldfinger. (The men are all sat

The Character Quoyle in Annie Proulx s The Shipping News...
The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure Sven Goran Eriksson. Success is an achievement in
life which most people would be appreciative towards, but failure is looked upon in a disgraceful
manner. People in society tend to face many challenges that occur in their daily lives. Some of these
challenges can affect their lives dramatically in a positive or negative way. If one decides not to
surmount their challenges they will suffer within themselves for a long period of time. Having
confidence within is considered the greatest way to overcome suffering in life. In the novel, The
Shipping News, by Annie Proulx, Quoyle deals with many difficult challenges along his life journey
by suffering from bad childhood experiences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quoyle, the main character in the novel, had a rough childhood which was one of the main reasons
towards his low confidence level. Quoyle would always get pushed around and walked on which is
just like the meaning of his name, Quoyle is a rope that is always tangled together and usually on the
floor where people step all over it, which is very similar to Quoyle as a character because his life is
also tangled and confusing and he too gets walked all over and pushed around by others. A quote that
illustrates how Quoyle felt about his childhood would be, ?This gave me an uneasy feeling, the feeling
of standing on a playground watching others play games whose rules I didn?t know.? (Proulx, 63) This
demonstrates that even as an adult Quoyle had bad memories as a child that is locked into his mind.
Quoyle?s physical appearance has been a great embarrassment for him because he feels as if he is ?
ugly? because of his ?monstrous chin? as he calls it and it is shown in the novel that Quoyle hates his
chin as well, ?Quoyle put his hand over his chin.? (Proulx, 20) This is one of the constant actions
Quoyle does which shows that he is unhappy with his outer appearance. As a child Quoyle has always
been isolated, he would always get teased, picked on and pushed around by other and most of the time
it would be his brother and father. One of the main reasons he disliked his family was because

Freshman Convocation Going in to tonight I did not know what to expect. I had already read Mr.

knowledge today s student s have. From being a primarily white college, to having a very diverse class

Effects Of Bilingualism On Divergent Thinking Of Adults
Effects of Bilingualism on Divergent Thinking of Adults
Introduction Literature Review
Since the early 20th century numerous studies, in psychology as well as linguistics, have been
conducted on the effects of bilingualism on cognitive abilities (Saer, 1923; Smith, 1923; Gowan
Torrance, 1965). Until the 1960s there was some consensus among experts about the detrimental effect
of bilingualism on cognitive development. However, after the publication of Peal and Lambert s
article on the relation of bilingualism to intelligence, most of these theories were discredited due to
methodological flaws (Peal Lambert, 1962). A majority of the studies conducted before this period did
not take into consideration the differences in age, gender, culture, second language proficiency and
socio economic status between the monolingual and bilingual participants. Research conducted
thereafter has found largely positive effects of bilingualism on cognitive functions (Landry, 1974;
Holtzman, 1980). Recent research in the field has focused on understanding the relationship between
bilingualism and specific aspects of cognition, such as inhibitory control, creativity and metalinguistic
awareness, as opposed to the earlier studies which tried to associate bilingualism with intelligence.
Even though, most studies have found a positive correlation between bilingual proficiency and
cognitive benefits, there is still much debate in this area of research (Leikin, 2012). In 1992,

Pros And Cons Of Rotator Cuff Surgery
Rotator Cuff Surgery
Your rotator cuff consists of four muscles in your shoulder that allows you to move your arm away
from your body. These muscles have tendons, which connect them to the head of your upper arm bone
or humerus. When a tear occurs in these muscles, you will experience extreme pain on motion. A
rotator cuff tear is also extremely painful at night. If left untreated, it may result in arm weakness.
Rotator cuff surgery may be required to repair re attach torn tendons to the shoulder. This may be
followed by rotator cuff exercises after surgery to promote further healing and return of function.

Two weeks before the surgery, you may have to stop taking some medicines that can interfere with
blood clotting such as aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen. You will also have to see a doctor to evaluate
your medical condition if you have any health problems such as diabetes or heart disease. Other
factors that may affect your surgery are your smoking habits and alcohol intake, which you must avoid
before surgery. Tell your doctor if you have any acute illness such as flu or fever before surgery.
On the day of surgery, avoid eating or drinking anything six to 12 hours before the operation. Just take
a small sip of water to ingest any medication you are asked to take. Go to the hospital early so you

Basketball Identity
What is an identity, an interest or a talent that defines me in an essential way? As a little kid who s
only thought was to have fun, all I cared about at first was playing video games and watching
cartoons, but that wasn t my interest as it became boring to me. Needing something new in my life,
one day, my cousins came over to my house asking if they could watch something on the TV, I said
sure, so they turned on the TV and put on a documentary. At first, I was disinterested and wanted to go
back to my usual habits, but I stayed and watched, I realized that the documentary contained the
answer to my question and that answer was basketball as it became an identity that defined me in an
essential way because it changed how I felt, how I thought, and how I lived. Out of all the things in
the world, basketball became my guidance, it spoke to me in a way where it wasn t just an interest, but
a window of discovering who I am, what I love, and what I want to become. In that window of time I
would watch every basketball game and practice my skills as a player. Watching NBA players give
their hearts out to the game of basketball brought me joy as well as the confidence and determination
to play and improve my skills to be just like them. My favorite player was Kobe Bryant because he
would play every game at the highest level he could play at and he had a killer work ethic that a
person would only dream of having. I would set an alarm at 10 a.m. to wake up and start practicing

Assisted Suicide Speech
Some people think that assisted suicide should be legal and some people think it should not be legal.
This issue is serious because if the Supreme Court does change the law and make it legal then people
will use assisted suicide as an excuse to get help in ending their lives. Our views as a society have not
changed because we still think killing someone is murder and when someone is killed we think that
person should be put in jail. So if society thinks people should not commit murder then what is the
difference between murder and assisted suicide? There isn t one. Yes when someone requests assisted
suicide they want to their lives to end but that should not give us the right to go around and kill anyone
who wants to die. Committing murder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If Canadians know that it is against the law to assist in someone s suicide why do they do it anyway?
If the law is changed then more people will go and assist someone in killing themselves. If a person
wants to kill themselves then they are obviously in a bad state of mind. Section 7 of the Charter is
supposed to make everyone feel secure. So instead of letting that person commit suicide we should
protect that person and get that person help, whether it be getting them some sort of therapy or getting
that person medication to keep them feeling better for that period of time. Many Canadians are
charged for helping someone ill or someone they love die. Marielle Houlle, for example, is a lady that
was sentenced to get three years probation by a Quebec court in 2004 because she helped her 36 year
old son, who was in pain from multiple sclerosis, end his life (CBC, 2014). Another one of my

The Benefits of the Atkins Diet Essay
The Benefits of the Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet has been attacked in recent years and been accused of being a fad diet that does not
successfully cause weight loss and is the causes of health problems. The most criticized area of the
Atkins diet is the seemingly unlimited amount of fat and meat that is allowed within the diet. This
unconventional method of weight loss is the center of the animosity towards the Atkins diet. Though
this diet may not be the best method of weight loss for all dieters, it is beneficial and extremely
efficient for others. The Atkins diet is the best choice for dieters looking to lose a few superficial
pounds quickly because dieters on the Atkins diet lose more weight within 3 6 months and do not ...

The high fat content of the diet has caused many opponents of the Atkins diet to jump to the
conclusion that it must cause heart disease. This has been found to be completely untrue. In fact,
research from the New England Journal of Medicine found that several heart disease indicators
actually improved for those on the Atkins diet. They found an increase in serum triglyceride levels and
serum HDL (the good cholesterol) that was greater than those on the low fat diets. They also found
that both diets saw similar decreases in LDL (the bad cholesterol). Therefore, those on the Atkins diet
had a higher increase in good cholesterol that benefits the heart and the same amount of reduction in
bad cholesterol as the low fat diet. Though it would seem intuitively correct to assume that a diet that
is high in fat would cause heart disease, studies have proven that the Atkins diet is actually beneficial
to the heart.
In addition to being beneficial to the heart, the Atkins diet is very successful in losing weight
compared to low fat diets. Several studies have found that after six months those on the low
carbohydrate diets (like the Atkins diet) lost 3.9 kilograms (8.6 pounds) more weight than the low fat
diet group. However, these same studies found that after the participants were on the diets for twelve
months, there was no significant difference in the amount of weight that was lost. This supports the
idea that the Atkins diet is better for

The British Industrial Revolution
During the Britain Industrial Revolution, being a member of the working class got marked with
different challenges. The days in the factories seemed elongated. The workers in the factories had to
toil among the great machinery that got used to producing goods (Levack et al., 2011). The
productions arose from the rural household industry and the handcraft industry from where most good
got produced before industrialisation. The members of the working class experienced immediate

Some factories, like the cotton trade, were very strenuous for workers due to the long periods of
labour. The nature of the job performed in these sites produced a lot of heat and steam engines
increasing the intensity of the heat. The areas where the machinery got installed was not protected by
fencing, and workers could easily reach the moving parts of the machines when undertaking their
duties. The children who worked in these factories were forced to move in between this machinery
and were put in a great deal of danger where most of the got several injuries and death rates were high
in the factories (More, 2013). Also, most workers worked for more than twelve hours a day in the hot
and physically exhausting environment. The exhaustion made most of the workers slow, and this even
worsens the situation in handling machines and made the working place more dangerous. The upper

War Of The Worlds Analysis
The War of the Worlds (1953) is science fiction, but shot in pseudo documentary style using real
military footage interlaced with the Martian invasion force that is destroying all the majors cites
around the world. The display of the uniquely, non saucer shapes of the strange Martian ships on the
rampage, alarming news broadcast, and images of panic stricken public fleeing for very lives, only
adds to the desperate battle for humanity on a global scale, and a sense of utter realism and terror.
Every shot is conveying a message and emotion, even at the end of the film, the doom laden finale in a
disintegrating church, all very efficiently handled by director Byron Haskin (Schneider 58), implies
that all hope is lost, the end of the world is at hand, and hundreds seek refuge in churches, praying for

The Civil Service And Performance System
According to Thomson (2006), considerations of performance and merit are important in the civil
service (496). The contemporary civil service cultivated an ethic of civil service pursuant where the
servants were expected to act by their subjective responsibilities (Thompson, 2006, 498). In
Thompson s (2006) view, deinstitutionalization is happening in the civil service institution (500).
Thompson (2006) speaks of civil service reforms about performance and merit. In his argument, the
discussions of the civil service reforms have been dominated by managerial rhetoric (Thompson,
2006, 501). Additionally, he argues that in the current system, performance and merit are not
considered keenly as high performers are compensated the same way as poor performers (Thompson,
2006, 496). To provide a solution to this problem, systems have been proposed to reward performers
and to promote good governance in the public sector.
Thompson (2006) argues that the performance system should work in line with the merit ideals (496).
However, the performance system that has been put in place has created a noticeable bias against
disregarding hierarchical authority in ways that undermine merit ideals. The pay for performance
system gives the supervisors greater ability to influence the amount of the annual pay increases their
juniors receive (Thompson, 2006, 498). Therefore, Thompson (2006) suggests that in civil service,
merit and performance are related. However, in the current system, the

Exploring and Unraveling Autism Essay
Autism Spectrum Disorder, known as ASD, is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders,

common and severe form of ASD. Other less severe conditions along the spectrum include Asperger s

altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize. It is not completely understood as to

In 1943, an Austrian American psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Kanner was one of the first to specialize in child
psychology and was credited with recognizing autism as its own unique mental disorder. Kanner
discussed his research based on a group of eleven children who all displayed similar conditions such
as social interaction difficulties, difficulty processing and adapting to changes, particularly good
memory, and exceeding sensitivity to sounds and other stimulants. Kanner used the term autism to
describe the main characteristics that all of the children he studied displayed little to no interest in
socializing with others. Lastly, Dr. Hans Asperger, a scientist and pediatrician in the late 1900 s, also
contributed research and multiple studies on children with autism. Dr. Asperger is best known in the
history of autism for defining Asperger s Syndrome. Asperger s Syndrome is a less severe condition

autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of cognitive development. For many years,
autism was rare, occurring in just five children per 100,000 live births. However, according to the

Cialdini s Six Weapons Of Influence
In Social Psychology, there are six principles of compliance that describe the tactics people use to
persuade or influence others. Also referred to as Cialdini s six weapons of influence, these six
approaches include reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, friendship/liking,
authority, and scarcity. Of course, one can find examples of these persuasive techniques in everyday
life situations. However, if there is a single location where one can find examples of these principles
occurring at the same time, it would be at farmer s market. This past Sunday, I visited the Chattanooga

Naturally, since I love hot sauce, I agreed that all the sauces were delicious. Since I agreed to tasting
each sample and giving positive feedback I made it seem as though I was committed to the position
that supported the notion that each sauce was excellent. That would have made it more likely for me to

had me agree to a small request (sampling hot sauce), and then presented me with a larger request

Scarcity The next vendor I stopped at was selling dog collars and leashes. I ended up buying a faux

thought it was cool. However, as I was about to put to it back, the vendor came up to me and told me

History of a Nursing in El Paso
The second Texas institution opened by the Daughters of Charity was in El Paso, a frontier town of
only a few thousand residents, when three Daughters of Charity arrived on February 3, 1892. The day
the history of nursing in El Paso will always look back to.(TSHAonline.org) These ladies saw a vision

center to go too, and formed our medical programs and helped lay a foundation to grow on. With the

Between Serpents Of Paradise By Edward Abbey And Thinking...
The difference between Serpents of Paradise by Edward Abbey and Thinking Like a Mountain by
Aldo Leopold is specifically that one essay focuses more on the hunting aspect of life. Both essays
seem to care about the environment. In Abbey s essay he tries to figure out how to avoid killing the
snake; he needed to stay calm and move it without getting bit. In Leopold s essay he killed a wolf to
save the deer population; allowing him to hunt more deer. Each essay was written with great
description, yet showing one author cared more about the animal and its environment over the other.
In both Leopold and Abbey essays they wanted to alter their environment, but only Abbey succeeded
due to Abbey having the correct knowledge when it came to his environment. The authors have two
clearly different environments and describes them in diverse ways. Abbey writes about his
surroundings as a bright, clear, calm April morning. He changed his description in the afternoon as the
wind begins to blow, raising dust and sand in funnel shaped twisters that spin across that desert briefly,
like dancers, and then collapse elements under stress (52). While Leopold writes about his experience
with on a mountain as a deep chesty ball echoes from rimrock to rimrock, rolls down the mountain,
and fades into the far blackness of the night (49). People, in general, care more about the environment
as it comes to their careers. Abbey and Leopold have careers which has involved them in their specific

order to humanize her and her decisions. By portraying both opposing sides from each of their own
viewpoint, we are able to understand that neither side is inherently good or inherently bad. This essay
will discuss Potter s outcomes to analyze the social effects of Princess Mononoke on its audience.

Loss of Innocence in Sarah´s Key
Loss of Innocence A child is known for having innocence, and bad experiences strip kids of it. In
Sarah s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay, experiences cause a loss of innocence due to loss of freedom, loss
of hope, and loss of family. Freedom is a right that allows humans to live life to the fullest. In society
when a child has no basic rights of freedom, it causes them to grow up and lose their innocence. In
Sarah s Key, Sirka describes how she feels at the camp: The girl noticed a handful of people watching
them through the barbed wire.... The girl felt like she had become someone else. Someone hard, and
rude, and wild. Sometimes she fought with the older children, the ones who tried to grab the old stale
bread she had found. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She screamed the swearwords in her mind....he would not find her. Never bastards, dirty bastards. (
Rosnay129 130) Sirka has to hide from the Germans under the potatoes , because she knows that they
are coming for her . The thought of the Germans get[ting] her is causing her to use all the swearwords
her mother ha[s] forbidden her ever to use . Going against her mom by using words such as bastards is
an example of how she no longer is innocent. She is disobeying her authorities, by using language that
is not kid friendly. Sirka is no longer the sweet daughter, she has lost her naïve personality, changing
to a ruthless girl with a bad mouth. Lastly, is when Sirka hears rumors of the children getting
separated from the adults: There were rumors, rumors going around the camp. The parents were going
to be sent east, to work....She repeated the conversation to her mother. She said no... They couldn t
separate the children from the parents. In that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away, the girl would
have believed her mother.... But in this harsh new world, the girl felt she had grown up. She felt older
than her mother. (Rosnay 70 71) Sirka no longer lives in that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away
. She currently is kept in a camp, and may be split up from her parents. She no longer has a choice if
she wants to be with her parents, as the French are seperat[ing] the children from the parents . In this
harsh new world Sirka

Madoff Ponzi Scheme And Whistleblowers
Madoff Ponzi Scheme and Whistleblowers Due diligence is A comprehensive appraisal of a business
undertaken by a prospective buyer, especially to establish its assets and liabilities and evaluate its
commercial potential. (Oxford Dictionaries). Every investor and self respecting business should do
their homework before trusting any other business with their money. Fairfield Greenwich Group
claimed a loss of $7 billion that has vaporized with Bernie Madoff (Blodget, H., April 1, 2009). The
Fairfield Greenwich assured their e clients that they did their due diligence by thoroughly researched
Madoff by learning about their managers, operational practices, staff, and infrastructure. The group
also said that they have higher standards and sorting process than any other average consulting firm
(Blodget). However, FGG were also supposed to analyze Madoff s trading records. Apparently, they
did not do their proper due diligence because Madoff did not have trading records; thus, it was
impossible to replicate and analyze those essential documents. In addition, FGG needed to at least,
monitor his activities for a couple of months to see what kind of results he is getting. The group is
being sued by Massachusetts regulators for not doing due diligence that they claimed they did,
misleading their clients, and investing more than a half of their assets into Madoff s firm (Henriques,
D.B., April 1, 2009). The whistleblower Harry Markopolos alerted the SEC three times to the

Charleston s Water Pollution
Going to the beach is always a fun way to spend an afternoon, but how would people feel if the next
time they tried to catch a wave they were hit with plastic bottles and styrofoam. Charleston is such a
beautiful city but, the harbor is overcome with pollution. This Pollution travels to the oceans and to
the shores of South Carolina s beaches. The water is affecting Charleston s harbor but household
water, local businesses, and marine life in the area. Water pollution should not be looked over and
needs to be taken care of before it gets worse. More and more ways are being discovered to help treat
water pollution around the world, but what needs to happen is to stop the pollution. Around the world
water pollution is a definite obstacle; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The litter has put the animals at such high risk of danger that most of these species are now
endangered. Some ways the animals are harmed are suffocating on plastic bags, getting trapped in
bottle holders, or being poisoned by the toxins in some litter.
These fish becoming poisoned by the toxins can carry disease and end up on your plate. Local seafood
restaurants or grocery stores cannot tell if the fish they serve to you has been affected by the hazardous
pollution. The fishermen that catch the fish locally cannot see a difference between the diseased fish
and normal ones either so the pollution in the community deposits into the harbor can come right
back. The local population also drinks the water that has been filtered and sometimes contains
dangerous minerals. This water runs through showers and faucets in homes that people use every day.
These reasons all concern the local community and they should because water pollution is a serious
problem and if people do not take action immediately than Charleston s water could become a
wasteland instead of a fun afternoon. Most people believe that the pollution is too much for them to
handle, but there are multiple ways everyone can get involved and help out the community. Dozens of
volunteers filled burlap sacks with frayed rope, empty liquor bottles, flattened drink cups, and
fragmented pieces of plastic that were pulled from the marsh (Elmore 1). These people volunteered to
help the community by picking up trash at

The Importance Of Photosynthesis In Plants
Photosynthesis in plants is one of the most important chemical reactions on the planet. Photosynthesis
is a chemical reaction necessary to sustain all forms of life. Only plants, and some very specialized
animals, called autotrophs are able to turn sunlight into usable chemical energy. Autotrophs turn
inorganic molecules into complex organic molecules through solar or chemical energy. Autotrophs
also have the capacity to store energy, such as carbon compounds which can be passed to other
organisms that consume them. Plants are the base of the flow of energy and therefore a primary
producer.(Miller and Levine, 2014) Other organisms can break down the carbon compounds
consumed through plants and release it through respiration to be used again by plants. This is known
as the carbon cycle. But what makes this happen? In an indoor or laboratory setting, what types of
artificial light can be most efficiently used as a substitute for sunlight?
Plants provide the basis for most food chains. Even the energy consumer came from plants at one
point. Photosynthesis is used to store nutrients and other carbon compounds in plants that are also vital
for many other organisms. Photosynthesis mainly occurs in two stages, the light stage, and the dark
stage. These take place in photosystems I and II. These hold chlorophyll molecules and, when
chlorophyll is struck by a photo of light, an electron becomes energized and water molecules bind. (
Updegraff, 2017). Water is split into hydrogen and

Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought
David Wolkoff
English 9CP/Western Civ.
Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss
April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought
The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of
property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This
idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way
of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era
philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different
from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more
than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th
century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of
democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from these
ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly
into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of John Locke
and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it today would not
exist.
The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas that
existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are

The United States accounted for 323,018 of those deaths. Almost 40 million deaths could have been avoided without World War 1. So was the damage caused by World War 1 worth it? Was it beneficial for the United States to enter the Great War. Yes, it was. The benefits accompanied with America entering the Great War largely outweigh the detriments that the war brought. The United States should enter the Great War because the war will benefit the United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful military, and the end of the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early twentieth century, before the war began, the role of women was already changing drastically. Women were working more, gaining a better education and having fewer children. Then, during the war, women played a crucial role in aiding the war efforts. One way women assisted in the war was moving into jobs that were previously vacated by men who were drafted into the war. Women also assisted in munitions factories. These are factories that make war materials. Women could have sewed uniforms or helped make weapons. These factories were the number one employer for women during 1918. After the introduction of conscription in 1916 women began to work in jobs that were traditional reserved for men. Employment rates for women during World War I went up from 23.6% (1914) to 46.7% (1918). Because the population of women in America benefited the war efforts greatly, in 1918, the women s suffrage amendment was passed in senate with the necessary 2/3 votes. America s involvement in the Great War led directly to the passing of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote. It is now clear that the United States should enter the Great War because the war will benefit the United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful military, and the end of the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women to vote. The original project was approved for the development of 25 lots consisting of single family homes. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Prostitution Unicef recently reported that an estimated 1.8 million children enter the sex trade each year. Some are in the United States, but the worst abuses take place in countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Cambodia (Kristoff), but while saving some life outside is very diverse, some girls go on to be very successful while others return to the life of prostitution. Rescue efforts that are effective in removing children permanently from sexual slavery involve under cover investigation, and people who are willing to risk their lives. Rescue efforts involve great risk on the part of the rescuer. One of the risks the raids are being up against the police while being a government agent in a way, some police officers are bribed by the owners of the young girls to keep quiet. Kristoff lists that police officers are taking bribes. In the book Sold by Nicholas Kristoff he lists Shahanna and Lakshmi having a conversation about police, saying Policeman are supposed to stop people like Mumtaz from selling girls, she says. But she gives this one money each week and he looks the other way (Kristoff). The girls are having a conversation about police corruption and how Mumtaz keeps them away. Mumtaz bribes the policeman into being quiet about the illegal selling of girls to keep her safe, this creates a risk for rescuers because they don t know who they can trust. The police are armed and can be dangerous since they are corrupt. Another reason rescuing the girls is risky is because the rescuers must go undercover in the process of organizing these raids on the brothels is the gathering of information and evidence from the undercover agent going into the brothel, especially being in constant danger of a pimp catching, and killing him, while being inside the brothel, the article Raiding a Brothel in India said International Justice Mission, a Washington based aid group that fights human trafficking, had spotted Chutki while prowling undercover looking for prostituted children (Kristoff). The undercover agents are in danger when being inside the brothels gathering intel. The agents remain anonymous in reports to protect them for future purposes. Within the very first paragraph on the book, Gorge Elliot introduces her four major concerns illustrated in Silas Marner namely village life (of the late 18th century), superstition and belief, alienation and historical change (in this case specifically that caused by industrial revolution and the ending of the Napoleonic Wars). These concerns are closely woven together in the story (and in some cases real life) as can once again be seen in this opening two paragraphs and often can be looked at in relation to one another. Village life was probably Gorge Elliot s primary focus when writing the novel and her anthropological investigations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another thing these country folk are distrustful of are things outside their realm of knowledge, which is fairly small. Anything which they do not comprehend or have not experienced, such as the weavers and their trade, is at once dangerous and suspicious. Associated with this is the concept of continuity that is something very important to the village folk. It is thus that something which is new or which roots are unknown is regarded with suspicion. As the paragraph says how was a man to be explained unless you at least knew somebody who knew his father or mother? This brings is to the theme of superstition. As mentioned above the country folk are very much suspicious of things they do not understand. Since they are unable to rationally and logically comprehend the nature of such things, they start formulating superstitions regarding these things. This is why the shepherd, though he had good reason to believe that the bag held nothing but flaxen thread, or else the long rolls of strong linen spun from that thread, was not quite sure this trade of waving...could be carried on entirely without the help of the Evil One. Natural human inclination is to create irrational beliefs, usually linked to the supernatural, about things that are mysterious and unknown. The Representation of Gender in Bond s Films Goldeneye and Goldfinger There are two films in particular that I have chosen to look at that show how the representation of gender in Bond movies has changed throughout the years. These two films are Goldeneye and Goldfinger. There are many reasons that the representation of gender has changed between these two films. The most obvious being a change in society. The two films were made thirty one years apart. Women are now accepted as being something more that just producing babies and being there to be slept with. Between the Bond films Licensed to Kill and Goldeneye a lot of changes in characters were made. This is due to a lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This demonstrates exactly how women s roles have changed. We see Bond as a hero from the start of both Goldeneye and Goldfinger the difference being that in the earlier film, Bond used the woman, who he is kissing as a shield to save himself from being shot. This shows that he has a higher opinion of himself and complete disregard for women. It shows how women are represented as being disposable. In the later film Goldeneye Bond puts Natalias life first, when the train is about to blow up. This shows how representation of gender has changed from the earlier film. Bond now sees Natalia as an equal and wants to ensure that she is safe before himself. Another example of how in the earlier films women were seen to be sex objects is when Bond is talking to a pretty blond woman, but as soon as Felix comes arrives Bond slaps the woman on the bottom and send her on her way declaring that she is no longer required because its mans talk. In Goldfinger women are there for amusement, a trophy figure. Goldfinger himself demonstrates this himself by paying Gill to be seen with him. Goldeneye shows how women are more equal. Zenia Onatopp shows how women are being represented. When racing with Bond she is equally as good. She challenges him and is very assertive. If one decides not to surmount their challenges they will suffer within themselves for a long period of time. Having confidence within is considered the greatest way to overcome suffering in life. Quoyle would always get pushed around and walked on which is just like the meaning of his name, Quoyle is a rope that is always tangled together and usually on the floor where people step all over it, which is very similar to Quoyle as a character because his life is also tangled and confusing and he too gets walked all over and pushed around by others. A quote that illustrates how Quoyle felt about his childhood would be, ?This gave me an uneasy feeling, the feeling of standing on a playground watching others play games whose rules I didn?t know.? Quoyle?s physical appearance has been a great embarrassment for him because he feels as if he is ? ugly? because of his ?monstrous chin? as he calls it and it is shown in the novel that Quoyle hates his chin as well, ?Quoyle put his hand over his chin.? Effects Of Bilingualism On Divergent Thinking Of Adults Effects of Bilingualism on Divergent Thinking of Adults Introduction Literature Review Since the early 20th century numerous studies, in psychology as well as linguistics, have been conducted on the effects of bilingualism on cognitive abilities (Saer, 1923; Smith, 1923; Gowan Torrance, 1965). Until the 1960s there was some consensus among experts about the detrimental effect of bilingualism on cognitive development. However, after the publication of Peal and Lambert s article on the relation of bilingualism to intelligence, most of these theories were discredited due to methodological flaws (Peal Lambert, 1962). A majority of the studies conducted before this period did not take into consideration the differences in age, gender, culture, second language proficiency and socio economic status between the monolingual and bilingual participants. Research conducted thereafter has found largely positive effects of bilingualism on cognitive functions (Landry, 1974; Holtzman, 1980). Recent research in the field has focused on understanding the relationship between bilingualism and specific aspects of cognition, such as inhibitory control, creativity and metalinguistic awareness, as opposed to the earlier studies which tried to associate bilingualism with intelligence. Even though, most studies have found a positive correlation between bilingual proficiency and cognitive benefits, there is still much debate in this area of research (Leikin, 2012). As a little kid who s only thought was to have fun, all I cared about at first was playing video games and watching cartoons, but that wasn t my interest as it became boring to me. Needing something new in my life, one day, my cousins came over to my house asking if they could watch something on the TV, I said sure, so they turned on the TV and put on a documentary. At first, I was disinterested and wanted to go back to my usual habits, but I stayed and watched, I realized that the documentary contained the answer to my question and that answer was basketball as it became an identity that defined me in an essential way because it changed how I felt, how I thought, and how I lived. This issue is serious because if the Supreme Court does change the law and make it legal then people will use assisted suicide as an excuse to get help in ending their lives. Our views as a society have not changed because we still think killing someone is murder and when someone is killed we think that person should be put in jail. So if society thinks people should not commit murder then what is the difference between murder and assisted suicide? There isn t one. Yes when someone requests assisted suicide they want to their lives to end but that should not give us the right to go around and kill anyone who wants to die. Committing murder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Canadians know that it is against the law to assist in someone s suicide why do they do it anyway? If the law is changed then more people will go and assist someone in killing themselves. If a person wants to kill themselves then they are obviously in a bad state of mind. Section 7 of the Charter is supposed to make everyone feel secure. So instead of letting that person commit suicide we should protect that person and get that person help, whether it be getting them some sort of therapy or getting that person medication to keep them feeling better for that period of time. Many Canadians are charged for helping someone ill or someone they love die. Marielle Houlle, for example, is a lady that was sentenced to get three years probation by a Quebec court in 2004 because she helped her 36 year old son, who was in pain from multiple sclerosis, end his life (CBC, 2014). Another one of my concerns with assisted suicide is that some people might use it as a cover up for killing another person. If a person shoots someone and ends another their life that person can serve up to 14 years in prison. Yet this lady only gets 3 years probation for ending her sons life. This was a controversial decision as it was not considered fair by many people. The law should just stay the same and anyone who kills someone else should get an appropriate ... This unconventional method of weight loss is the center of the animosity towards the Atkins diet. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The high fat content of the diet has caused many opponents of the Atkins diet to jump to the conclusion that it must cause heart disease. This has been found to be completely untrue. In fact, research from the New England Journal of Medicine found that several heart disease indicators actually improved for those on the Atkins diet. They found an increase in serum triglyceride levels and serum HDL (the good cholesterol) that was greater than those on the low fat diets. They also found that both diets saw similar decreases in LDL (the bad cholesterol). Therefore, those on the Atkins diet had a higher increase in good cholesterol that benefits the heart and the same amount of reduction in bad cholesterol as the low fat diet. Though it would seem intuitively correct to assume that a diet that is high in fat would cause heart disease, studies have proven that the Atkins diet is actually beneficial to the heart. In addition to being beneficial to the heart, the Atkins diet is very successful in losing weight compared to low fat diets. Several studies have found that after six months those on the low carbohydrate diets (like the Atkins diet) lost 3.9 kilograms (8.6 pounds) more weight than the low fat diet group. • 29. The Civil Service And Performance System According to Thomson (2006), considerations of performance and merit are important in the civil service (496). The contemporary civil service cultivated an ethic of civil service pursuant where the servants were expected to act by their subjective responsibilities (Thompson, 2006, 498). In Thompson s (2006) view, deinstitutionalization is happening in the civil service institution (500). Thompson (2006) speaks of civil service reforms about performance and merit. In his argument, the discussions of the civil service reforms have been dominated by managerial rhetoric (Thompson, 2006, 501). Additionally, he argues that in the current system, performance and merit are not considered keenly as high performers are compensated the same way as poor performers (Thompson, 2006, 496). To provide a solution to this problem, systems have been proposed to reward performers and to promote good governance in the public sector. Thompson (2006) argues that the performance system should work in line with the merit ideals (496). However, the performance system that has been put in place has created a noticeable bias against disregarding hierarchical authority in ways that undermine merit ideals. The pay for performance system gives the supervisors greater ability to influence the amount of the annual pay increases their juniors receive (Thompson, 2006, 498). In Sarah s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay, experiences cause a loss of innocence due to loss of freedom, loss of hope, and loss of family. Freedom is a right that allows humans to live life to the fullest. In society when a child has no basic rights of freedom, it causes them to grow up and lose their innocence. In Sarah s Key, Sirka describes how she feels at the camp: The girl noticed a handful of people watching them through the barbed wire.... The girl felt like she had become someone else. Someone hard, and rude, and wild. Sometimes she fought with the older children, the ones who tried to grab the old stale bread she had found. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sirka is no longer the sweet daughter, she has lost her naïve personality, changing to a ruthless girl with a bad mouth. Lastly, is when Sirka hears rumors of the children getting separated from the adults: There were rumors, rumors going around the camp. The parents were going to be sent east, to work....She repeated the conversation to her mother. She said no... They couldn t separate the children from the parents. In that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away, the girl would have believed her mother.... But in this harsh new world, the girl felt she had grown up. She felt older than her mother. • 44. Madoff Ponzi Scheme And Whistleblowers Madoff Ponzi Scheme and Whistleblowers Due diligence is A comprehensive appraisal of a business undertaken by a prospective buyer, especially to establish its assets and liabilities and evaluate its commercial potential. (Oxford Dictionaries). Every investor and self respecting business should do their homework before trusting any other business with their money. Fairfield Greenwich Group claimed a loss of $7 billion that has vaporized with Bernie Madoff (Blodget, H., April 1, 2009). The Fairfield Greenwich assured their e clients that they did their due diligence by thoroughly researched Madoff by learning about their managers, operational practices, staff, and infrastructure. The group also said that they have higher standards and sorting process than any other average consulting firm (Blodget). However, FGG were also supposed to analyze Madoff s trading records. Apparently, they did not do their proper due diligence because Madoff did not have trading records; thus, it was impossible to replicate and analyze those essential documents. In addition, FGG needed to at least, monitor his activities for a couple of months to see what kind of results he is getting. The group is being sued by Massachusetts regulators for not doing due diligence that they claimed they did, misleading their clients, and investing more than a half of their assets into Madoff s firm (Henriques, D.B., April 1, 2009). Charleston is such a beautiful city but, the harbor is overcome with pollution. This Pollution travels to the oceans and to the shores of South Carolina s beaches. The water is affecting Charleston s harbor but household water, local businesses, and marine life in the area. Water pollution should not be looked over and needs to be taken care of before it gets worse. More and more ways are being discovered to help treat water pollution around the world, but what needs to happen is to stop the pollution. Around the world water pollution is a definite obstacle; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The litter has put the animals at such high risk of danger that most of these species are now endangered. Some ways the animals are harmed are suffocating on plastic bags, getting trapped in bottle holders, or being poisoned by the toxins in some litter. These fish becoming poisoned by the toxins can carry disease and end up on your plate. Local seafood restaurants or grocery stores cannot tell if the fish they serve to you has been affected by the hazardous pollution. The fishermen that catch the fish locally cannot see a difference between the diseased fish and normal ones either so the pollution in the community deposits into the harbor can come right back. The local population also drinks the water that has been filtered and sometimes contains dangerous minerals. This water runs through showers and faucets in homes that people use every day. These reasons all concern the local community and they should because water pollution is a serious problem and if people do not take action immediately than Charleston s water could become a wasteland instead of a fun afternoon. Most people believe that the pollution is too much for them to handle, but there are multiple ways everyone can get involved and help out the community. Dozens of volunteers filled burlap sacks with frayed rope, empty liquor bottles, flattened drink cups, and fragmented pieces of plastic that were pulled from the marsh (Elmore 1). • 46. The Importance Of Photosynthesis In Plants Photosynthesis in plants is one of the most important chemical reactions on the planet. Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction necessary to sustain all forms of life. Only plants, and some very specialized animals, called autotrophs are able to turn sunlight into usable chemical energy. Autotrophs turn inorganic molecules into complex organic molecules through solar or chemical energy. Autotrophs also have the capacity to store energy, such as carbon compounds which can be passed to other organisms that consume them. Plants are the base of the flow of energy and therefore a primary producer.(Miller and Levine, 2014) Other organisms can break down the carbon compounds consumed through plants and release it through respiration to be used again by plants. This is known as the carbon cycle. But what makes this happen? In an indoor or laboratory setting, what types of artificial light can be most efficiently used as a substitute for sunlight? Plants provide the basis for most food chains. Even the energy consumer came from plants at one point. Photosynthesis is used to store nutrients and other carbon compounds in plants that are also vital for many other organisms. Photosynthesis mainly occurs in two stages, the light stage, and the dark stage. These take place in photosystems I and II. These hold chlorophyll molecules and, when chlorophyll is struck by a photo of light, an electron becomes energized and water molecules bind. ( Updegraff, 2017). Water is split into hydrogen and ... • 47. Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought David Wolkoff English 9CP/Western Civ. Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from these ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of John Locke and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it today would not exist. The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas that existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are ...
