Improvements in information technology related technologies are encouraging and enabling greater use of public transportation and they are enabling new forms of transportation systems that have lower carbon emissions and use less resources. Improvements in information-related technologies such as mobile phones and GPS encourage greater use of public buses, bicycle sharing systems, and trains. These same improvements are making autonomous vehicles economically feasible and roads dedicated to them. Roads dedicated to them can reduce congestion, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce accidents and costs related to them. In combination with public transportation, autonomous vehicles can reduce the need for private vehicles and thus parking spaces. Similar types of improvements in power electronics are reducing the cost and improving the performance of charging stations and thus enable more rapid recharging with a denser number of charging stations. This rapid and more frequent recharging can overcome the existing bottleneck of lower battery storage densities and slow improvements in these storage densities. Overall, improvements in information technology are making possible new forms of sustainable systems that have a much higher chance of becoming economically feasible than more commonly discussed solutions such as hybrid vehicles and wind turbines.
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are advanced applications which, without embodying intelligence as such, aim to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management and enable various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks.
Although ITS may refer to all modes of transport, EU Directive 2010/40/EU of 7 July 2010 on the framework for the deployment of intelligent transport systems in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other modes of transport defines ITS as systems in which information and communication technologies are applied in the field of road transport, including infrastructure, vehicles and users, and in traffic management and mobility management, as well as for interfaces with other modes of transport.

Conceptions of GIS: implications for information literacyMaryam Nazari
According to Nazari's contextual methodological model emerged from her PhD study, people's conceptions and experiences of a subject/discipline in some real-life contexts, e.g. when learning or teaching the subject, plays a key role in uncovering the competencies learners need to effectively learn the subject and transfer their knowledge to their workplace.
In this presentation, Nazari presents four conceptions of GIS (Geographic Information Science/Systems) as conceived or experienced by a group of GIS educators and students in a joint ODL GIS programme, delivering in the UK and US.
Drawing on the conceptions, she highlights their implications for information literacy in the context of the programme, using and reflecting on the SCONUL model.

A growing number of utilities are calling for reform or abolition of net metering. They call it a “free ride” to use utility wires and not pay for the service. IREC, along with other non-profits and the solar industry, know net metering can be fair and balanced. It provides benefits that outweigh utility costs in most cases, particularly by deferring new utility construction. It's a hot button topic. A rundown of what's happening in key states, including a deeper analysis of the issue and insight into how to achieve a fair valuation of all of net metering's benefits, was covered by Jason to standing-room crowds

» Requires that all public charging stations which
require payment accept a simple credit card
transaction or provide access with a phone call.
» Requires pricing transparency so that drivers
know costs associated with particular charging
stations.
» Goal is to ensure that the entire public charge
infrastructure—much of which is funded at least
in part by public money—is available to anyone in
need of a charge.

26. Install System
Determine
recharging site(s)
Closer to existing electric utility
equipment is cheaper, adding
new circuits and conduit can
increase capital costs
significantly
Review traffic, pedestrian
flow, parking requirements, and
ADA compliance issues
Consider such safety, proper
and sufficient lighting, potential
shelter from weather, general
personal/ property security, and
signage
Determine additional retrofit
needs, including landscaping
Estimate electrical
load at site(s)
Determine whether to use Level
1 or 2 charging or other
Obtain charger requirements
from vehicle and charger
suppliers
Determine the appropriate
number of EVSE units
Consider expectations for
future expansion now, taking
into account the facility’s
electrical capacity
Contact EVSE
suppliers
Confirm charging
needs, types, and costs. A

Buy equipment that takes
advantage of the total time
employees are parked to
minimize your equipment and
utility costs
Contact Utility
Assess existing electricity supply
- is it adequate?
If no, determine necessary
electrical service upgrades
Review metering requirements
and elective options
Consider using load
management equipment.
Contact pertinent
permitting agencies
and obtain all
pertinent building
and use permits.
Identify special local
fire, construction, environment
al, or building requirements
Obtain all applications
Determine additional
permitting costs
Determine site plan
