Blue Jays Case Study
The Toronto Blue Jays recent success, shown in large by the team s first playoff berth in
22 years, has boosted ticket prices at an exponential rate. Through the use of economic concepts and
the book Cocktail Party Economics, the change in prices can be explained further in depth.
While any Blue Jays enthusiast could tell that the price boost is due to the increase in the team s
popularity, one with a working knowledge of economics could explain that the price increase is a
factor of scarcity, demand equilibrium.
Scarcity, simply put, is the underlying reason why economics and markets exist: the fact that there
is not enough of a good for everyone who wants one to have one. In Cocktail Party
Economics, the author gives an example of having 10 stones that 20 different ... Show more content

There is a limited number of seats in a stadium, and thus there is a limit to the number of tickets to
sell, resulting in only the most dedicated and faithful fans paying large prices to see the playoff
games.
After the Jays improved performance in the regular season and the increased popularity of the
team, it would be easy to simply say that playoff tickets are in higher demand. However, we must
turn to economics to explain why demand has increased. Demand refers to how much of a good
the market will buy at any given price. For this reason, it is important to understand that price
changes, whether they be increasing or decreasing, do not change demand В they change the
quantity demanded. During the first half of the baseball season, the Blue Jays had a worse record
and were not expected to be in the playoff team for that simple reason that they rarely sold out
their games, despite the tickets being at a lower price point than present. However, today tickets
sell out mere hours after being put to market as consumer preferences changed in favour of the
team. Cocktail Party Economics gives the example of grocery stores stocking products with

The Management Functions Of Planning
This discussion board forum address three important concepts learn in this week s study using
assigned reading and peer reviewed journals. The three concepts discussed are: The Management
Functions of Planning, The Management Functions of Controlling and The Management Functions
of Organizing. The managementfunctions of planning is a crucial function of management as it is
setting goals for specific results and determining how to achieve those results Satterlee (2013).
There are many aspects that impact planning within an organization such as it gives organization
direction; decreases uncertainty; ensures progress toward a goal; allows organization to take
corrective actions if progress is not in alignment with the goal; failing to plan is planning to fail.
The basic planning process determines how to achieve the company objectives as managers take
the objectives and work backward by preparing a strategy and how to implement that particular
goal. According to Satterlee (2013) there are six formal steps that should be taken: 1) situational
analysis, 2) generation of alternative goals and plans, 3) evaluation of goals and plans, 4) selection
of goals and plan, 5) implementation of the chosen goals and plans, and 6) monitoring and
controlling of the goals and plans. Situational analysis determines what the current conditions are
and the capabilities in order to ascertain the plausibility of future plans and strategies. One type of
situational analysis is to evaluate

The September Crisis Of Canada
The October Crisis was a series of events trigged by the kidnapping of two government officials
during October of 1970 in the province of Quebec. The kidnappings of British Trade
Commissioner James Cross and Quebec Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte were the pinnacle of all
terrorist activity led by the Front de LibГ©ration du Quebec(FLQ). The FLQ was a radical
separatist group who strived for Quebec s independence from the rest of Canada. The
circumstances ultimately culminated in the only peacetime use of the War Measures Act in
Canadian history, invoked by Governor General of Canada Roland Michener at the direction of
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The use of the War Measures Act had been requested by the Premier
of Quebec, Robert... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The invocation of the War Measures Act was also widely supported throughout Quebec and
Canada, with eighty six percent of Quebec s population and eighty eight percent of Canadians
agreeing with the use of the War Measures Act in a poll by the Gallup company. Furthermore, the
detainment of individuals and suspension of civil liberties under the War Measures Act is justified
because close to ninety percent of those arrested were released soon after, and members of authority
executed the arrests non violently with the well being of the individuals as their top priority.
Trudeau s imposition of the War Measures Act was crucial considering that the FLQ presented the
most serious threat of domestic terrorism in Canadian history. Although the events leading up to the
October Crisis were relatively slow paced, it was the increase in the severity of FLQ crimes that
led the SГ»retГ© du Quebec to call on Canada s federal government to implement the War
Measures Act. The FLQ, claiming independence or death , was responsible for half of the
domestic terrorism events in Canada between 1960 and 1985. It had claimed its first victim on
21 April 1963 after the bombing of a military office in Montreal the first of over two hundred
bombings between 1963 and 1970, and the first of eight deaths associated with the FLQ. This
allowed the group to repute itself as a legitimate terrorist threat that directly jeopardized the lives of
civilians. The members of the FLQ were a

Africentric Alternative School Case Study
The expression separate but equal, is the philosophy in which was the foundation of racial
segregation in the late 19th and 20th centuries and is commonly referred to the Brown v. Board of
Education case. Separate but equal is the process of granting all citizens of the state the same rights
and freedoms but finding ways around the law that would allow racial discrimination to be applied
in all situations. However, separate but equalis not always a problematic circumstance, as the
Africentric Alternative School located in Toronto Ontario is an institution that was developed in

Irish Music
Celtic Irish Music
Name
Institutional Affiliation
Celtic music is a broad group of music genres that have emerged from the native folk music
traditions of people of Western Europe, such as the Irish. Throughout history, Ireland has been
associated with music. Irish music history dates back over 2000 years when the Celts arrived in
Ireland. Irish clerics are known for writing some of the earliest folk songs. One of the twelve
disciples of Ireland, St Columcille (521 5797 AD), described that the clerics of Ireland had the
ability to sing like birds . Irish music has remained vibrant in this 21st century having gained global
recognition. This is unlike most European countries that have lost their native folk songs. ... Show

Before the 17th century, harpists were professional musicians and the use harps was at its height. At
the time, Ireland was ruled by Chieftains, who also employed the use of harps in Irish songs. Irish
tradition was steady and secure. However, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, Ireland was
invaded forced the Chieftains to flee the country. The Irish music tradition suffered a massive blow
as harp playing was not considered as a profession anymore. The professional harpists became
known as travelling harpists. Decades after the Chieftains fled Ireland after the first invasion,
Ireland was colonized by the British. The British government introduced laws aimed at crushing the
Irish culture and introducing the British culture. There was a penal law that forbade any cultural
activities. These laws saw the significant suppression of the growth of Irish culture.
In the 1840 s, Ireland suffered a great famine. This led to the death of more than one million
people, subsequently, most of the Irish tradition died with them. The famine also saw a significant
migration of people over the world in a desperate measure to stay alive. This led to a devastating
factor in the Irish traditional music. However, a good dead came out of this emigration. When the
Irish fled the famine and settled elsewhere, they introduce the Irish music in that new place. The
traditional Irish music network grew especially in places like USA and Australia. The music

The Role Of Modern Nationalism And The Middle East
In this essay I will be discussing the role of modern nationalism and how this ideology affected the
transition from colonial rule to independence in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as the
problems that plagued them since 1945, and how these different nations have solved them. I will be
specifically concentrating on the nations of India, Algeria, and Iran. In the wake of World War Two,
the power of Asian nationalism was irrepressible. Many new nations emerged all throughout this
massive continent. Even though these various nations are different in many ways the way in which
they came together hold true. Everywhere Asian nationalists rallied their people against colonialism
and imperialism brought on by the various countries... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this was a problem, it was fairly brief. Since India gained their independence, the
country has faced many problems. These problems include ethnic and religious conflict, poverty
and overpopulation. These problems have been attempted to be solved by the Indian
democracy. For example, The prime minister, Indira Gandhi (1966 77 1980 84) embarked on the
green revolution this increased agricultural yields for India s eight hundred million people. This
solved problems of poverty for a short period of time, this is because India has one of the fastest
growing populations in the world. Gandhi realized this and took stringent action by calling for a
state of emergency form 1975 77. During this time period she imposed very repressive birth
control policies, even involuntary sterilization. Over eight million people were sterilized in an
effort to control the overpopulation problem. This was not the end of India s problems though, in
1980 the religious divide proved to be a deadly one. Gandhi took it upon herself to fix the
problem, ordering the army to attack a sacred temple which harbored Sikh extremists. She did this
all because this particular religion wanted more autonomy in the Punjab region of India. A short
time later she was assassinated by two of her

Religious Belief And Practice Everyday Life
Religion
In every culture there seems be a creation myth the story of how the world and everything on it
came to be. Religion and the rituals surrounding them are found in every culture in the world.
Examples that are familiar to many Christians in the United States are attending churches, praying
before a meal or in a time of grief, and baptisms for infants shortly after they are born. Religion
serves many functions in society, and attempts to answer some of life s big questions, such as:
Who am I? How was the Universe created? Why am I here? What happens when I die? The role of
religious belief and practice everyday life can affect us in ways we may not even realize until we
dig a little deeper below the surface.
In Life in Riverside, the Sanos begin their search for a suitable home by touring several
apartments in the area. Many of the questions are geared to determine the trust worthiness of the
Sanos: Where do you work? Where are you from? What church do you go to? The last questions
throws the couple off guard and they are unsure of how to answer the question fearing that saying
they do not attend a Christian church will label them as dishonest or immoral people. They write of
the experience (25):
We found this question not only strange but also awkward to answer. In asking ourselves why we
found this questions to be so awkward, we decide that it is probably due to the way Japanese view
religion. Asked their religious affiliation, most Japanese would answer

Socratic Wisdom
Socratic Wisdom In the Apology, the oracle at Delphi stated that Socrates was the wisest man of
his time (Plato 21a). Socrates, however, [was] very conscious that [he was] not wise at all ,
which would not make him the wisest man of his time (21b). Certainly, not both the oracle and
Socrates could be simultaneously correct in their individual beliefs; thus, the oracle and Socrates
must have had differing definitions of wisdom. What, then, is wisdom? Many people believe
wisdom denotes having extensive knowledge about various things. A person often gains this
knowledge through time and experience, hence why elderly people are viewed as wise. We shall
refer to this form of wisdom as wisdom through knowledge alone. So too, many... Show more

When one says that this elderly person has wisdom from various life experiences, he/she is not
saying that the elderly person knows much about books and their profession. Instead, one would
be speaking about the elderly person s vast knowledge about what is important in life due to
their multitude of experiences. While the elderly person may not be completely wise in the
most encompassing form of wisdom, the elderly person does appear to have a more expansive
understanding of what is important in life. Simply knowing what matters in life, however, does
not satisfy the ultimate form of wisdom, for the wise must know why these things matter in life.
That is, a truly wise person must have insight beyond the theoretical, into the practical. Beyond
this, a wise person, in this view, must also know how to achieve what matters most, and, in
knowing so, do what matters most. I say this because a truly wise person would be able to act
upon what they know to be the most important thing in life. It is wiser for a person to act than to
merely conceptualize what is most essential in life. This, I believe, is what Socrates viewed
wisdom as in Plato s Apology. While it can be inferred that Socrates viewed wisdom as humility,
knowledge, and self knowledge through his examinations of the politicians, poets, and craftsmen,
this is not Socrates complete view of wisdom. The more comprehensive view Socrates held of
wisdom lies in his belief

Scarlet Letter Ambiguity
In The Scarlet Letter, sin and guilt represent the theme of morality throughout the entire novel. The
scarlet letter A is the main representation of the protagonist assumed moral ineptitude. Yet there is a
certain amount of vagueness that occurs at her initial appearance that leaves the reader a bit
confused. Nathanial Hawthorne produces a marvelous piece of ambiguity that allows the reader to
question their own idea of how morality is defined. While he works the theme of morality into all
of the characters in the novel, the three main characters Hester Prynne, Chillingworth, and
Dimmesdale are the main focus if the idea of morality in the novel.
Hester Prynne is an adulteress; this is a fact made by an assumption by the reader of the symbol red
letter A on her breast. The first moral question does she deserve this sort of humiliating punishment?
Without more information on the nature of the crime, the absolute answer in the light of the true
human condition would be yes. Nathanial Hawthorne ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His moral character is easily defined when he sets into action his dark, evil plan to torment
Hester and torture Dimmesdale. His moral character is not as harshly judged because the reader
might view him as the victim. His wife has had a baby with another man and her character of
morality has been called into question by Chillingworth. Here the action of his own moral code is
called into question by the two people he tortures, Dimmesdale and Hester. Dimmesdale exclaims to
Hester: We are not, Hester, the worst sinners in the world. There is one worse than even the polluted
priest! That old man s revenge has been blacker than my sin. He has violated, in cold blood, the
sanctity of a human heart (170) and his words shows that Hawthorne continued to circumvent the
moral code throughout the novel by having the characters themselves place the judgment of
immorality on each

Essay The Closing Down Of Summer
Simple recipes by Madeleine Thien, and The Closing Down of Summer by Allister MacLeod both
focus on the struggles the characters undergo due to cultural gaps, or being away from home from
work, creating the sense of isolation or alienation within their families. The impression of isolation
found in the text is generated from the situational behaviours found in the actions, thoughts, or
exchange of language in the characters. For Macleod focuses on how his protagonist uses ancestral
rituals to find individual fulfillment on the account of his work occupation deteriorating his
connection with family. Whereas Thiens story demonstrates how the uses of ritualistic behaviour

This effect is demonstrated through the protagonist s dislocation of being a father, and husband.
The narrator s perspective of being a parent has deteriorated, resulting in his perception that he s
merely become a financial lifeline for his children and spouse. Yet this allows them to live life
in comfort, and not undergo what he must. The protagonist s desire to fulfill the role of a father
has become an unattainable concept due to the incapability to express his emotional or mental
struggles. Macleods protagonist at face first is resilient too the challenges of his isolated work
life. Yet the deep desire to express himself to another has become forgotten. This is understood
due being surrounded by other workers who have also forgotten to express themselves, making
self expression a forgotten skill. If the need for communication in the workplace arises, it is done
with a nod, grunt or reading of familiar lips . In which Macleod narrator literally forgets how to

Alborum Plumae Research Paper
Early yesterday morning, a previously undiscovered species was found above the snowline in the
Mount Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales. The discovery was made by a the well
known biologist, Dr. Ella Beard, who upon curiosity of observing the snow fixed abnormally firmly
to tree branches, climbed the tree and discovered these small feathered creatures perfectly disguised
as cumulated snow.
The creature, now known scientifically as Alborum Plumae, hides perfectly as snow lumps on tree
branches. It is believed to spend the majority of time in a stationary position, only using its wings
for flight from predators.
Many of the Alborum Plumae traits are easily comparable to birds. They has a thick layer of down
insulation, allowing them to retain warmth while sedentary, zygodactyly feet for gripping branches,
pneumatic bones to aid in flight, huddling behavior for retaining warmth, and wings for escaping
predators. It is not completely bird like however, as it has sharp incisors for eating hard nuts found
in gum trees in surrounding areas, and has four legs. It has not yet been confirmed which class this
animal belongs to. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

visibility. The only other observed behavior to date is in flight, when threatened directly by
predators. In these circumstances, the whole group (known as a storm) take flight simultaneously
and fly to safety. This was only observed by Dr. Ella Beard when she disturbed

also helps workers gain energy to start an objective by staying motivated. An you may either

will help improve the workplace because, it will gain more money towards your paycheck and

In the text it states that workers must be focused to be effective. but yet again it says workers must
get a break to recharge themselves to increase more high productivity in the company. Finally,
workers gain enough energy and motivation to start and finish an objective. I have witnessed it
with my own eyes by seeing people usually waking up on the wrong side of the bed and just dont
feel the need to work, and thats many men I have work with when in construction. But when
there is a length in the time you work from, many men and woman will have the sense of
encouragment to do what needs to be done, instead people usually working an eight hour shift
would not even have any type of grit in themselves. for example in the text it says, Most people
do their best thinking in late mornings and afternoon. This is partly due to biologic cycles of
energy and motivation. In conclusion, I believe that a six hour workday would be more effective
for workers and employees, but most importantly the company itself. Heres why, it will help
improve the workplace, help workers become more focused in their work, and also help the
workers gain more energy and motivation to start and finish an objective. So rather then the
following, I believe that the six hour workday should be something in consiteration for future and

Laura Mullvey Male Gaze Essay
Male Gaze Theory Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey is a british feminist film theorist who coined the idea of the Male Gaze ; the male
gaze is essentially the way in which the visual arts, such as film and television are structured
around the male viewer, that is, that producers assume that the viewer is male. The theory
describes the way that media depicts women in terms of what men see. Mulvey also upholds the
belief that we live in a patriarchal society in which men set the vast majority of rules and
construct the views of the ideal visions, roles and male dominance over women, This is backed up
by the fact that only about 16% of media creators are female. Mulvey believed that women were
the bearers of meaning and not the makers of meaning. Within the male gaze theory, There are 3
parts of the male gaze:
Men looking at women
Men tend to look at women s curves, this is the idea that men tend to look at other parts of a
women s bodies and not their eyes. Which is why the camera in films also focus on other parts of
the women s bodies.
Women looking at themselves

An Off Season Analysis
The author s main point of this essay was that we get so caught up in our lives that there is
barely any downtime to just be. She talks about how they signed her daughter up for soccer in the
fall thinking it would be a one season thing but then they started talking about winter league.
When she was walking her daughter play in the winter league, she thought that we need breaks or
an off season to regroup and get our bodies together. Even the best of the best in their sports or
careers take downtime to ensure that they don t burn out. The author talks about the importance of
an off season, to ensure that we have the chance to experience life at its fullest. This article spoke

Dialectical Behavior Therapy
BSHS/311
Introduction
Cognitive behavior therapy includes many types of therapy and can be applied in a variety of
circumstances. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is most commonly known for use on clients
with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, DBT is becoming more popular and often
used when working with adolescents. Some adolescents participate in nonsuicidal self injury
(NSSI). Counselors find DBT is an effective therapy to help youth acquire the coping skills needed
to stop NSSI. A review of DBT, and adolescents suffering with NSSI will better help one to
understand why this technique is beneficial. NonSuicidal Self Injury
NSSI is defined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The goal for the counselor is to show an understanding of the self harming behavior while
conveying acceptance and validating the adolescents thoughts and actions (Choate, 2012). The
counselor shows acceptance; however, the goal is to create change. Although the counselor
balances acceptance and change, the counselor continually challenges the client to alter any
negative behavior hindering one s life quality. Ultimately the thought is that acceptance and
validation will facilitate self change while change will facilitate self acceptance. If the adolescent is
reluctant to change the harmful behavior, the counselor may spend more sessions building trust and
showing validation before attempting change. Additionally, a client may find it difficult to trust the
counselor is the client believes the counselor will report NSSI episodes to the adolescents parents. A
balance must be created between client trust, parental rights, and confidentiality. With a proper
balance allowing the youth comfort, yet abiding by regulations, an adolescent will be able to build
the relationship required to develop change (Choate, 2012). Assessments should be conducted
during the initial interviews with the client. These initial evaluations are either conducted
informally with an interview or formally with a structured interview and self report tool. The DBT
model allows the counselor to integrate assessment results into four DBT target treatment areas.

Training Conference For My Assessment
Self Assessment 4
I ve recently been doing training for work and used the training conference for my assessment.
During the training session, it was very apparent when the trainer answered a question in an
irrelevant manner and although she spoke in an upbeat manner, her responses could sometimes
sound impersonal and ambiguous. Since she spoke in the same friendly tone throughout, it was
very hard to read her actual feelings during it. I found that when I needed to ask a question, I
would wait and see if someone else had the same question first and depending on how she was
answering things, I typically did not bother. Once I could tell her true emotions on certain subjects
by the different cues and responses that she gave, I began to ... Show more content on

Snow House Descriptive Writing
My eyes flutter open lazily, as my slumber is interrupted by bright light, streaming through the
window. Slowly I swing my legs over the edge of my bed, toes searching for the soft carpet.
Standing on weary legs, I peer through the window to find a crisp white layer covering the grass.
The sun is gleaming brightly onto the newly fallen snow, causing a nearly blinding shimmer.
Heading toward the stairs my nose detects the sweet scent of a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls. My
sluggish steps become lively as I bound down the stairs into the aromatic kitchen. Studying the
kitchen my eyes rest on the clock which reads 8:30. Guess what honey! It s a snow day! My mother

more layers. She tightly wraps a scarf around my neck and face making it arduous to breathe.
My mom takes a soft pink hat and tugs it snugly onto my head, over my ears. She hands me my

older brother Jackson yells, Wait for me! I roll my eyes and slump uncomfortably onto the steps

Finally we open the oak door and step foot into the first snow of the year. The frigid air hits my

Understanding Hate Crime Statutes And Building Towards A...
The topic of hate crime is so controversial because there can be different perspectives on the whole
issue, which can eventually cause a massive huge debate on the entire matter. In Ben Gillis article
called Understanding Hate Crime Statutes and Building Towards a Better System in Texas, the
author separates his points in a way that can give the reader a better way of understanding the Hate
Crimelaws and the effects of it. Gillis s way of dissecting the article is extremely effective due to
the fact that not only he explains what exactly a hate crime is in its basic form but he also
explains hate crime in its entirety, and he also shows how some states adapt to the whole issue.

Now any one can take a jab at what they think a hate crime is but in the article Understanding
Hate Crime Statutes and Building Towards a Better System in Texas the author supports us with
his definition of a what is a hate crime a hate crime, at its basic level is an attack upon the person
or property of an individual motivated by hatred of a characteristic of that person, such as race,
religion, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity (Gillis 199). Now that the definition gives us
clarity on what exactly labeled onto what exactly is considered a hate crime. For example, did
you know that if someone vandalizes a synagogue and they write something offensive to the
Followers of that particular religion that will be considered a hate crime because of the person
is motivated by hatred towards the Followers (Gillis 199). You may have your own perspective
on a particular group but if you so happen to put your hands on the person to harm them because
of your belief it becomes a hate crime. In its basic form of what is a hate crime Gillis uses the
definition so that the reader aware hate crime criteria. Let us take another article for example, In
opening of Jesse Larner s article Hate Crime/Thought Crime he alluded to a situation where two
Caucasian men decided to go and attack two African American with the intent to do some
serious harm to them. There were no knowledge as to what was motivated them to do so. One
thing for sure according to Larner, Sean Riley Caught up to one of the victims and remorselessly
told her I m going to kill you, you black bitch . Without a doubt it is extremely obvious that hatred
of a specific race was the driving force behind the gruesome actions posed by the two men
especially Mr. Sean Riley. There s no way that the 1st amendment of the United States correlate with

Analysis Of In Praise Of Fast Food
All aspects of fast food have been criticized significantly, especially since the health food trend
craze came around. An argument by culinary Luddites that is often thrown around is that our
ancestors never had the access to these options and lived a much happier natural lifestyle. Rachel
Laudan brought these points to the forefront to be critiqued in her writing In Praise of Fast Food.
Rachel Laudan brings the argument that individuals have always participated in the consumption
of convenience based foods, the goal in growing and producing food has always been to alter
produce to make it more convenient as well as better tasting. Fast food is not as new of an
invention as many believe it to be. Modern mainstream media outlets have pushed the belief that
processing food has been the worst thing for the well being of the human body. Rachel Laudan
makes some very solid points in the fast food debate that should be noted.
It is commonly believed that fresh and natural is the correct dietary plan above all else. To start
out, Rachel Laudan brings up the concept that going back to the way of our ancestors may not
be what individuals need in the modern world. Rachel Laudan questions the idea that the people
of the past lived a much healthier lifestyle than the current population finds acceptable by giving
the reader mental imagery about how the people of the past truly were living and how
undesirable that life was. Consequently, Rachel Laudan backs up her beliefs by arguing about
the benefits of the healthy natural eating of the people of the past Natural was unreliable. Fresh
milk soured; eggs went rotten. Everywhere seasons of plenty were followed by seasons of
hunger. Natural was also usually indigestible. Grains, which supplied 50 to 90 percent of calories
in most societies, have to be threshed ground, and cooked to make them edible (Faigley 271).
Rachel Laudan seems to be arguing that life for the people of the past was not something to create
a lifestyle around. In conclusion, the lifestyle of the past was a difficult one based on uncertainty
due to the dependency of the crops to thrive.
Next, Rachel Laudan argues the point that the processing of food is not a product of recent
invention, every society

Analysis Of Dirtwork In EuripidesThe Bacchae

Dirtwork in Euripides The Bacchae
The Bacchae represent the irrational aspects of religion, and this is neither simply reverent or
irreverent toward religion. The play, The Bacchae can easily be interpreted as a cautionary tale
about the dangers of neglecting worship or as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing too
much trust in human rationality. If the play s main intent was to describe the dangers of neglecting
worship or to describe the dangers of relying heavily of human rationality, then Bacchae would not
be portrayed negatively. I will argue that these interpretations, while true to some degree, are
oversimplifications of the message that Euripides conveys, and that a stronger interpretation is that
the play is commentary on the human struggle to harmonize our desire to individuate and our
desire to unify. The play describes the conflict between Pentheus need to define boundaries and the
Bacchae s desire to eliminate boundaries. Pentheus and the
Bacchae show what occurs when one desire overpowers the other. The conflict between
Pentheus and the Bacchae is an external representation of the internal conflict between the two
needs, that we observe in characters like Pentheus.
The Bacchae represent an irrational aspect of religion because they are portrayed as victims of
groupthink. The Bacchae do not think for themselves, and reject the idea of thinking for
themselves. This is shown here when the Bacchae chorus sings, A tongue

The Cultural Impact Of Globalization
Global Progress In an age in which people, business, and organizations can communicate even
while residing on different sides of the world, globalization has played a major role in the
progress of today s global society. As globalization continues to extend its reach to different parts of
the world in different ways, it is clear that it has left a positive mark on the world both culturally and
economically while improving international relationships. One of the most prominent ways in
which globalizationhas improved society is through cultural integration. As globalization
increases, the spread of works, ideas, and beliefs from different cultures extends its reach to new
parts of the world. As more people from different areas are able to become familiar with each
others beliefs and cultures, people around the world become more accepting of integration.
Therefore, as people migrate to different countries they are better able to become part of society
without having to feel ostracized. Simultaneously, international relationships between different
countries become stronger as there is more interaction between them. For example, when
European traveler Marco Polo visited China, he brought back Chinese artifacts and wrote a book
to explain to fellow Europeans the beliefs and ideas that the people from this foreign country had.
As a result, as the people of these two areas of the world became more familiar with each other,
and there was an increase in both trade and migration

The Army of the British East India Company Essay
Chapter 4: The Army of the British East India Company
The army of the British East India Company in the Bengal Presidency, prior to the Sepoy
Rebellion of 1857 1858, was based heavily on native models in keeping with the limited goal of
the Company in India: to make profits, but avoid upsetting the traditional order as much as
possible. Robert Clive and Warren Hastings were the fathers of the Honorable Company s army in
India prior to 1857, but they in turn based their policies on the armies of the Nawab of Awadh and
the Benares Raj. The resulting Company army was composed largely of high caste Hindus and
Muslim peasants, and the Company catered to their religious sensitivities and preferences.

longstanding British recruitment patterns. Clive and Hastings based their recruiting practices on
were the armies of the Nawab of Awadh and the Benares Raj; both had adopted the same
recruiting practices, and the Benares Raj recruited high caste Hindus in an effort to identify itself
as a Hindu Raj. The practice of recruiting peasants into native armies was pioneered by Shuja ud

composed of so called gentlemen troopers, cavalrymen which had formed a strong connection with
the educated elite in Awadh.4 An alliance between the militaryforces and educated elite of Awadh

Upon reading the whole of this article (Appendix A) I found it very interesting and thought
provoking not only because this software development was so new, having only been released on
12th February
2001, but also because it was originally developed at Brunel
University and is being marketed by a local company in Leeds.
This new piece of software called Fotino allows ISP s to control the adverts which appear on a
web page. The software allows them to overlay advertising banners on any page on the net with
adverts sold by, and controlled by them. It was developed from the idea that ISP s hold more
personal information about their customers and can therefore target the advertising much more
successfully. (A printout of the

The V 6 engine is aptly suited for this vehicle. It is the same engine FCA uses to power such
models as the Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Dodge Charger. No boosting is necessary

How would the Pacifica perform with a full payload and pushing the minivan to its 3,600 pound

Symbols And Symbols Of Icons
Iconography is the traditional or conventional images or symbols associated with a subject and
especially a religious or legendary subject (Iconography). Icons are used in all religions to
represent and commemorate religious figures and symbols that are held with great honor within
the religion. Icons are used to represent some sacred personage, such as a saint or an angel or
Christ (The Definition of Icons). Icons are typically written on wood and honored as sacred
(Goldammer). Not only is the writing itself seen as sacred but the whole practice of creating these
icons is a religious event. There are three main types of religious icons: portrait icons, group icons,
and landscape icons referring the the objects in the writings.
There are rules associated with iconography that have to be followed in order for the image to be
viewed as an icon. Before the artist starts writing the icon, they are supposed to fast and pray so
that they are in a clear, undisturbed state of mind. The artist needs to quiet one s spirit, which is
done through the praying and fasting. The quieting one s spirit is a way to open up and let God
in so he can do the work. The artist is instructed not to sign the writing as it is supposed to come

Eardrum Rupture Research Paper
Eardrum Rupture, Adult
An eardrum rupture is a hole (perforation) in the eardrum. The eardrum is a thin, round tissue
inside of the ear that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. The eardrum is also called the
tympanic membrane. It transfers sound vibrations through small bones in the middle ear to the
hearing nerve in the inner ear. It also protects the middle ear from germs. An eardrum rupture can
cause pain and hearing loss.
CAUSES
Eardrum rupture results from a sudden injury (trauma). This may be caused by:
Inserting a thin, sharp object into the ear canal.
Getting a blow to the side of the head, especially with an open hand.
Having a sudden increase in pressure against the eardrum, such as from an explosion or a ... Show

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of this condition include:
Sudden pain at the time of the injury.
Ringing in the ear or dizziness after the injury.
Bleeding from the ear.
DIAGNOSIS
This condition is diagnosed based on your symptoms and medical history as well as a physical
exam. Your health care provider can usually see a perforation using an ear scope (otoscope). You
may have other tests, such as having a hearing test (audiogram) to check for hearing loss.
TREATMENT
Typically, the eardrum will heal on its own within a few weeks. If your eardrum does not heal,
your health care provider may recommend a procedure to place a patch over your eardrum or
surgery to repair your eardrum.
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Keep your ear dry. This is very important. Follow your health care provider s instructions on how
to keep your ear dry. These may include wearing waterproof earplugs when bathing or swimming.
Take over the counter and prescription medicines only as told by your child s health care provider.
Keep all your child s follow up visits as told by your health care provider. This is important.

The Contributions Of Atlas In The King Of The Titans
Due to the lose with the war against Zeus, he was punished for the rest of his lifetime. The
punishment was rather simple, but cruel in a matter. He was the one who challenged the gods and
failed. Atlas was punished for his wrongdoing, he is mentioned in many tales and myths, and he has
a well known family. Atlasis a Titan who represents the figure that holds the heavens upon his
shoulders. He was the leader of the Titans when they went to war with Zeus, but after they were
defeated his fate was to bear on his back forever, the cruel strength of the crushing world, and the
vault of the sky. Upon his shoulders the great pillar, that holds apart the earth and the heaven,, A
load not easy to be borne. The importance of Atlas in Greek Mythologywas that he was the leader of
the Titans, he was the one who challenged the God Zeus. However after his defeat in the battle, his
new purpose to the Mythology was to bear the punishment of holding the heavens upon his shoulder
forever. Atlas and his brother Menoetius sided with the Titans against the other Olympians and
when the Titans were eventually defeated many of them were confined to Tartarus including Atlas s
brother. However Atlas had a different fate, and Zeus punished Atlas to hold the heavens on his
shoulders to prevent the earth from resuming its joints with the heavens. He was Atlas Telamon, or
enduring Atlas, a name embodying his daily struggle and punishment. Gaia and Uranus gave birth
to many children and among them

Geographic Differences Between Canada And The United States
Although they bear some superficial similarities, the differences between America and Canada are
striking. There are many differences between Canada and the United States such as ethnicity,
geography, population, politics, and many more. Of all the differences the focus of this paper will
be geography. Geographical differences can be seen through the land of the United Statesand
Canada.
The geographical land known as the United States was not formed in a day. It took many years to
formulate into what is seen today. For example, the Appalachian Mountains were formed when
two plates collided together causing a buckling in the Earth s crust. They now form a boundary of
the east coast to the remainder of the country. On the west coast, one can find the Rockies which
were formed by the westward shift of the North American tectonic plate and its collision with the
Pacific tectonic plate causing folding forces. The Rockies actually connect the United States to
Canada. Another example of the different geographical aspects of Canada and the United States is
the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon was created over many years by erosion from the Colorado
River.

The Cordillera is located on the western portion of Canada near Alaska. The Niagara Falls,
another beautiful geographical difference between Canada and the United States were formed
simply by large torrents of water that were released from the melting ice, draining into what is
now the Niagara River. Niagara Falls is located in both the United States and Canada, but there
is a big difference in the scenery depending on which side one is viewing from. The water fell
over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, a cliff at what is now Lewiston, New York. The force of
the water wore away the rock layers and Niagara Falls moved upstream, eventually reaching its

Allen Ginsberg s America Essay
Allen Ginsberg s America
Through a careful interpretation of A Defense of Poetry by Percy Bysshe Shelley and Democratic
Vistas by Walt Whitman, one can gain a holistic sense of poetry, what it is and what it does, that
can be applied to literary texts of all times. One can better understand Allen Ginsberg s America
through an examination of the aforementioned texts as well. The literary merit of the poem is best
recognized through Walt Whitman s Democratic Vistas, although Percy Bysshe Shelleys A Defense
of Poetry also contributes some very critical parallels to the poem and its characteristics.
Ginsberg s America was written in 1956, a time when beatniks and beat poetry were popular. The
poem is indeed a reflection of the beat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So these poems are a series of experiments with the formal organization of the long line... I realized
at the time that Whitman s form had rarely been further explored... (636). Therefore Allen Ginsberg
went on to attempt this form that so inspired him and it is of no coincidence that Ginsberg s style is
often analogous with Whitman s.
With reference to Ginsberg s emulation of Walt Whitman s content, the Norton Anthology,
Postmodern American Poetry, states that, Ginsberg proposed a return to the immediacy,
egalitarianism and visionary ambitions of Blake and Whitman. (130). His poem America caters
toward themes of democracy, something Whitman s poetry also does. Yet unlike Whitman,
Ginsberg takes a more questioning stance on America and does not use his poem to praise the
nation.
The anthology also notes that, Walt Whitman had called for large conscious American Persons .
Ginsberg responded by writing himself large on the American landscape while retaining an
appealing modesty. (130). Allen Ginsberg not only responded to Whitman s call but also to his six
line poem America with one of his own.
Walt Whitman s call for large conscious American Persons appeared in essence in his
unconventional essay, Democratic Vistas. In this essay, Whitman invites such attempts as Ginsberg
s through the statement, Never was anything more wanted than, to day,

Mexican-American Studies Textbook Analysis
Within America, each state is responsible for the operation of public schools and rules addressing
curriculum, teaching methods, and learning materials; the process Texas has implemented to adopt
new school textbooks is illustrated in the three articles, Publisher Defends Controversial Mexican

These articles, in particular, focus on problems with Mexican American Heritage, a proposed
Mexican American textbook for schools in Texas. They each express similar information over this

The Perception Of The Human Eye
Introduction
According to the dictionary, a sensation is the operation or function of the senses; perception or
awareness of stimuli through the senses, while a perception is the act or faculty of perceiving, or
apprehending by means of thesenses or of the mind; cognition; understanding. The eye is defined as
white membrane that contains an opening for light to get to the retina. The eye is developed in a
way that it receives physical stimuli like light and send it to the brain as an electrical signal that is
responsible for interpreting signals as images (Goldstein, Humphreys, Shiffrar, Yost, and Wiley,
2005). Among the animals, human vision is regarded as the most sophisticated. The three primary
layers of the eye include choroid, retina, and cornea. Furthermore, the human eye is responsible for
the complex color perception that is initiated and instigated by cones in the retina and complicated
by the integrating impulse in the brain.
The process of sight
All the vision is based upon the perception of the electromagnetic rays. These beams then pass
through cornea as light and get into the eye through the pupil. The pupil performs the function of a
gatekeeper because it allows less or much light to enter to enable an individual to see an image
clearly (Goldstein, 2010). Iris is the pigmented area, which is around the pupil, and it acts as a
sphincter. Furthermore, iris has two layers that are responsible for changing the quantity of light
that enters the eye (Goldstein,

The Preprocessing Phase Of Speaker Recognition Systems
The preprocessing phase in speaker recognition systems is used to give subsequent stages (features
extraction, modeling, and features matching) an intensification efficiency. Therefore, the system
performance is improved regarding classification rate and computing time. In this chapter, we
define the most important step in the pre processing and we followed by analyzing the reason of
chosen algorithms and its impressions in a Speaker Identification System (SIS).
2.1Pre processing Structure gCommonly the pre processing includes the sampling step, windowing,
and a denoising step. At the end of the preprocessing, the compressed and filtered speech frames
are forwarded to the feature extraction stage. The broad preprocessing pipeline is shown ... Show

A study of Sanderson al [23] have exposed that a combination of feature vector size and a chosen
sampling frequency has a direct impact on system performance. Figure 4, present a wave file
sampled at f = 16 kHz.
2.1.2Windowing Frame Blocking
A term of quasi stationary describes a slow variation in a given domain. In speech analysis,
features of an observed segment of a signal with a period Ts=(5 100 ms) could fairly be stationary.
The information in a speech signal is could be represented by short term amplitude spectrum
representation. The framing procedure is multiplying the speech wave with a windowing function.
The signal is weighted in the time domain (convolution) and divided into a sequence of partial
signals in the specter domain. By doing so, we improve time information of every partial signal.
In speech processing, There are various windowing functions, each with different shapes and
different characteristics. The form of the window function is not a critical factor. Usually, some soft
window like the Von Hann, rectangular, hanning or hamming window [24] are used to decrease
incoherence of the speech signal at the boundaries of each frame segment.
In this work, a Hamming window is used and given by:
2.1.3Silence Background Noise Removal (Endpoint Detection):
Depending on the purposes of the speech processing technique, preprocessing could include Noise
Removal, Endpoint Detection, Pre emphasis, Framing, Windowing, etc.

Essay on The Influence of Black Slave Culture on Early...
The Influence of Black Slave Culture on Early America
The Black slaves of colonial America brought their own culture from Africa to the new land.
Despite their persecution, the slave culture has contributed greatly to the development of America s
own music, dance, art, and clothing.
Music
It is understandable that when Africans were torn from their homes and families, lashed into
submission , and forced into lifelong slave labor, they would be, on the most part, resentful and
angry. Various forms of expression, clandestine yet lucent, developed out of these feelings. One
such form was music. Native
African music consisted mainly of wind and string melodies punctuated by hand clapping,
xylophones, and drum beats. Along those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus Africans were rather resistant to the preaching of Christian ministers when they came to
America. The Christian ideas they did absorb, however, were indoctrinated into their lives with the
addition of culture such as gospel music (see Music).
Later, a minister of mainly of African American congregations would use distinctly Black preaching
methods, as when he begins to employ numerous stock phrases and ideas, and, Midway in the
message the preacher begins to chant his words rhythmically.
Art
17th century Africans had art forms that would be considered advanced even today. Most of their
expression was religious in nature. But when they were brought to the New World, В…[slaves]
could not do this because Protestants had always frowned upon religious imagery in the church as
being worldly. Thus, there was little opportunity for the slave to express his creativity in graphic
and plastic art for the church as he had done in Africa where religion and art were inseparable.
Moreover, the slave was afforded few opportunities to carve on his own or his master s time. This
repression of the slave s creativity doubtlessly impeded the development of an African American art
standard. Although slaves could be trained in the practical arts, such as typesetting or furniture
making , they could really not fully express themselves until released from the bonds

Difference Between The Rich Get Rich And The Poor Get Poorer
The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Essentially this is the view that Marx and Engels had
on social economic status. There is a polarization of classes, in that there is a division of groups,
the rich and the poor. However not much has changed today. The rich help the rich, and the poor in
a sense also help the rich, but no one seems to care to help the poor. Even in times of natural
catastrophes the poor undoubtedly suffer the most with little help from anyone. The state only
helps the ruling class and protects big corporations.
Even with decades of warning of the possible flooding that could happen from the after math of
Hurricane Harvey, corporations chose to ignore all warnings and took no action to prepare if a
natural disaster were to happen. Marx and Engels would see that their theories are still relevant
today. There is still a social and economic inequality between classes. The poor and marginalized
suffer the most. Marx and Engels propose that the class in control of the material production
also controls the mental production The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling
ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time I ts ruling
intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has
control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking,
the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it (Marx, 172). Those in
the top class are in charge and ruling everyone else. They re the ones who have a say and the
power over others.
The corporations not only ignored the warnings for the flood they also fought against having to take
any precautions in case the natural disaster did happen. The flood itself could not have been
prevented, but the amount of damage and the people harmed could have been kept at a minimal.
Marx stresses that the economic production, the base, is what shapes the prevailing ideas, the
superstructure, and this economic structure is what drives society.
The rich take everything they can from the poor and are nowhere in sight when they are in need of
help. They state the reason people are poor is because of their own

The Acidic Environment Around Us
The environment around us is certainly acidic. Even though people often think the air around us
is neutral, the atmosphere naturally contains acidic oxides of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur that
can harm our environment greatly. These oxides can be produced naturally and industrially.
Sulfur dioxide is produced when organic matter decomposes and forms hydrogen sulphide
which then oxidises to the oxide: 2H2S (g) + 3O2 (g) 2SO2 (g) + 2H2O. The natural sources of
sulfur dioxide are in volcanic gases, bushfires, sulfur rich geothermal hot springs releasing gases
and the decomposition of organic matter. The industrial sources of sulfur dioxide such as in
processing and burning of fossil fuels and extracting metals from sulfur rich ores such as smelting
of galena for lead: 2PbS (s) + 3O2 (g) 2PbO (s) + 2SO2
Nitric oxide is another oxide in the atmosphere that is formed when nitrogen and oxygen react due
to high temperatures of lightning: N2 (g) + O2 (g) 2NO (g). Other sources of nitric oxide from
industrial sources include the combustion of fossil fuels both in cars and in power stations. The
nitrogen in the air reacts with oxygen in the hot engines. Another oxide that occurs in the
atmosphere is nitrogen dioxide which is produced after nitric oxide is produced by lightning and
reacts with the oxygen in the air: (2NO (g) + O2 (g) NO2 (g)), it is also released in large volumes
in the atmosphere by power stations. Nitrous oxide is an oxide that occurs on root nodules of legume

  • 2. Blue Jays Case Study The Toronto Blue Jays recent success, shown in large by the team s first playoff berth in 22 years, has boosted ticket prices at an exponential rate. Through the use of economic concepts and the book Cocktail Party Economics, the change in prices can be explained further in depth. While any Blue Jays enthusiast could tell that the price boost is due to the increase in the team s popularity, one with a working knowledge of economics could explain that the price increase is a factor of scarcity, demand equilibrium. Scarcity, simply put, is the underlying reason why economics and markets exist: the fact that there is not enough of a good for everyone who wants one to have one. In Cocktail Party Economics, the author gives an example of having 10 stones that 20 different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a limited number of seats in a stadium, and thus there is a limit to the number of tickets to sell, resulting in only the most dedicated and faithful fans paying large prices to see the playoff games. After the Jays improved performance in the regular season and the increased popularity of the team, it would be easy to simply say that playoff tickets are in higher demand. However, we must turn to economics to explain why demand has increased. Demand refers to how much of a good the market will buy at any given price. For this reason, it is important to understand that price changes, whether they be increasing or decreasing, do not change demand В they change the quantity demanded. During the first half of the baseball season, the Blue Jays had a worse record and were not expected to be in the playoff team for that simple reason that they rarely sold out their games, despite the tickets being at a lower price point than present. However, today tickets sell out mere hours after being put to market as consumer preferences changed in favour of the team. Cocktail Party Economics gives the example of grocery stores stocking products with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Management Functions Of Planning This discussion board forum address three important concepts learn in this week s study using assigned reading and peer reviewed journals. The three concepts discussed are: The Management Functions of Planning, The Management Functions of Controlling and The Management Functions of Organizing. The managementfunctions of planning is a crucial function of management as it is setting goals for specific results and determining how to achieve those results Satterlee (2013). There are many aspects that impact planning within an organization such as it gives organization direction; decreases uncertainty; ensures progress toward a goal; allows organization to take corrective actions if progress is not in alignment with the goal; failing to plan is planning to fail. The basic planning process determines how to achieve the company objectives as managers take the objectives and work backward by preparing a strategy and how to implement that particular goal. According to Satterlee (2013) there are six formal steps that should be taken: 1) situational analysis, 2) generation of alternative goals and plans, 3) evaluation of goals and plans, 4) selection of goals and plan, 5) implementation of the chosen goals and plans, and 6) monitoring and controlling of the goals and plans. Situational analysis determines what the current conditions are and the capabilities in order to ascertain the plausibility of future plans and strategies. One type of situational analysis is to evaluate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The September Crisis Of Canada The October Crisis was a series of events trigged by the kidnapping of two government officials during October of 1970 in the province of Quebec. The kidnappings of British Trade Commissioner James Cross and Quebec Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte were the pinnacle of all terrorist activity led by the Front de LibГ©ration du Quebec(FLQ). The FLQ was a radical separatist group who strived for Quebec s independence from the rest of Canada. The circumstances ultimately culminated in the only peacetime use of the War Measures Act in Canadian history, invoked by Governor General of Canada Roland Michener at the direction of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The use of the War Measures Act had been requested by the Premier of Quebec, Robert... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The invocation of the War Measures Act was also widely supported throughout Quebec and Canada, with eighty six percent of Quebec s population and eighty eight percent of Canadians agreeing with the use of the War Measures Act in a poll by the Gallup company. Furthermore, the detainment of individuals and suspension of civil liberties under the War Measures Act is justified because close to ninety percent of those arrested were released soon after, and members of authority executed the arrests non violently with the well being of the individuals as their top priority. Trudeau s imposition of the War Measures Act was crucial considering that the FLQ presented the most serious threat of domestic terrorism in Canadian history. Although the events leading up to the October Crisis were relatively slow paced, it was the increase in the severity of FLQ crimes that led the SГ»retГ© du Quebec to call on Canada s federal government to implement the War Measures Act. The FLQ, claiming independence or death , was responsible for half of the domestic terrorism events in Canada between 1960 and 1985. It had claimed its first victim on 21 April 1963 after the bombing of a military office in Montreal the first of over two hundred bombings between 1963 and 1970, and the first of eight deaths associated with the FLQ. This allowed the group to repute itself as a legitimate terrorist threat that directly jeopardized the lives of civilians. The members of the FLQ were a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Role Of Modern Nationalism And The Middle East In this essay I will be discussing the role of modern nationalism and how this ideology affected the transition from colonial rule to independence in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as the problems that plagued them since 1945, and how these different nations have solved them. I will be specifically concentrating on the nations of India, Algeria, and Iran. In the wake of World War Two, the power of Asian nationalism was irrepressible. Many new nations emerged all throughout this massive continent. Even though these various nations are different in many ways the way in which they came together hold true. Everywhere Asian nationalists rallied their people against colonialism and imperialism brought on by the various countries... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this was a problem, it was fairly brief. Since India gained their independence, the country has faced many problems. These problems include ethnic and religious conflict, poverty and overpopulation. These problems have been attempted to be solved by the Indian democracy. For example, The prime minister, Indira Gandhi (1966 77 1980 84) embarked on the green revolution this increased agricultural yields for India s eight hundred million people. This solved problems of poverty for a short period of time, this is because India has one of the fastest growing populations in the world. Gandhi realized this and took stringent action by calling for a state of emergency form 1975 77. During this time period she imposed very repressive birth control policies, even involuntary sterilization. Over eight million people were sterilized in an effort to control the overpopulation problem. This was not the end of India s problems though, in 1980 the religious divide proved to be a deadly one. Gandhi took it upon herself to fix the problem, ordering the army to attack a sacred temple which harbored Sikh extremists. She did this all because this particular religion wanted more autonomy in the Punjab region of India. A short time later she was assassinated by two of her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Religious Belief And Practice Everyday Life Religion In every culture there seems be a creation myth the story of how the world and everything on it came to be. Religion and the rituals surrounding them are found in every culture in the world. Examples that are familiar to many Christians in the United States are attending churches, praying before a meal or in a time of grief, and baptisms for infants shortly after they are born. Religion serves many functions in society, and attempts to answer some of life s big questions, such as: Who am I? How was the Universe created? Why am I here? What happens when I die? The role of religious belief and practice everyday life can affect us in ways we may not even realize until we dig a little deeper below the surface. In Life in Riverside, the Sanos begin their search for a suitable home by touring several apartments in the area. Many of the questions are geared to determine the trust worthiness of the Sanos: Where do you work? Where are you from? What church do you go to? The last questions throws the couple off guard and they are unsure of how to answer the question fearing that saying they do not attend a Christian church will label them as dishonest or immoral people. They write of the experience (25): We found this question not only strange but also awkward to answer. In asking ourselves why we found this questions to be so awkward, we decide that it is probably due to the way Japanese view religion. Asked their religious affiliation, most Japanese would answer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Socratic Wisdom Socratic Wisdom In the Apology, the oracle at Delphi stated that Socrates was the wisest man of his time (Plato 21a). Socrates, however, [was] very conscious that [he was] not wise at all , which would not make him the wisest man of his time (21b). Certainly, not both the oracle and Socrates could be simultaneously correct in their individual beliefs; thus, the oracle and Socrates must have had differing definitions of wisdom. What, then, is wisdom? Many people believe wisdom denotes having extensive knowledge about various things. A person often gains this knowledge through time and experience, hence why elderly people are viewed as wise. We shall refer to this form of wisdom as wisdom through knowledge alone. So too, many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When one says that this elderly person has wisdom from various life experiences, he/she is not saying that the elderly person knows much about books and their profession. Instead, one would be speaking about the elderly person s vast knowledge about what is important in life due to their multitude of experiences. While the elderly person may not be completely wise in the most encompassing form of wisdom, the elderly person does appear to have a more expansive understanding of what is important in life. Simply knowing what matters in life, however, does not satisfy the ultimate form of wisdom, for the wise must know why these things matter in life. That is, a truly wise person must have insight beyond the theoretical, into the practical. Beyond this, a wise person, in this view, must also know how to achieve what matters most, and, in knowing so, do what matters most. I say this because a truly wise person would be able to act upon what they know to be the most important thing in life. It is wiser for a person to act than to merely conceptualize what is most essential in life. This, I believe, is what Socrates viewed wisdom as in Plato s Apology. While it can be inferred that Socrates viewed wisdom as humility, knowledge, and self knowledge through his examinations of the politicians, poets, and craftsmen, this is not Socrates complete view of wisdom. The more comprehensive view Socrates held of wisdom lies in his belief ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Scarlet Letter Ambiguity In The Scarlet Letter, sin and guilt represent the theme of morality throughout the entire novel. The scarlet letter A is the main representation of the protagonist assumed moral ineptitude. Yet there is a certain amount of vagueness that occurs at her initial appearance that leaves the reader a bit confused. Nathanial Hawthorne produces a marvelous piece of ambiguity that allows the reader to question their own idea of how morality is defined. While he works the theme of morality into all of the characters in the novel, the three main characters Hester Prynne, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale are the main focus if the idea of morality in the novel. Hester Prynne is an adulteress; this is a fact made by an assumption by the reader of the symbol red letter A on her breast. The first moral question does she deserve this sort of humiliating punishment? Without more information on the nature of the crime, the absolute answer in the light of the true human condition would be yes. Nathanial Hawthorne ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is one worse than even the polluted priest! That old man s revenge has been blacker than my sin. Essay The Closing Down Of Summer Simple recipes by Madeleine Thien, and The Closing Down of Summer by Allister MacLeod both focus on the struggles the characters undergo due to cultural gaps, or being away from home from work, creating the sense of isolation or alienation within their families. The impression of isolation found in the text is generated from the situational behaviours found in the actions, thoughts, or exchange of language in the characters. The discovery was made by a the well known biologist, Dr. Ella Beard, who upon curiosity of observing the snow fixed abnormally firmly to tree branches, climbed the tree and discovered these small feathered creatures perfectly disguised as cumulated snow. The creature, now known scientifically as Alborum Plumae, hides perfectly as snow lumps on tree branches. It is believed to spend the majority of time in a stationary position, only using its wings for flight from predators. Many of the Alborum Plumae traits are easily comparable to birds. They has a thick layer of down insulation, allowing them to retain warmth while sedentary, zygodactyly feet for gripping branches, pneumatic bones to aid in flight, huddling behavior for retaining warmth, and wings for escaping predators. But when there is a length in the time you work from, many men and woman will have the sense of encouragment to do what needs to be done, instead people usually working an eight hour shift would not even have any type of grit in themselves. for example in the text it says, Most people do their best thinking in late mornings and afternoon. This is partly due to biologic cycles of energy and motivation. In conclusion, I believe that a six hour workday would be more effective for workers and employees, but most importantly the company itself. Laura Mullvey Male Gaze Essay Male Gaze Theory Laura Mulvey Laura Mulvey is a british feminist film theorist who coined the idea of the Male Gaze ; the male gaze is essentially the way in which the visual arts, such as film and television are structured around the male viewer, that is, that producers assume that the viewer is male. The theory describes the way that media depicts women in terms of what men see. Mulvey also upholds the belief that we live in a patriarchal society in which men set the vast majority of rules and construct the views of the ideal visions, roles and male dominance over women, This is backed up by the fact that only about 16% of media creators are female. Mulvey believed that women were the bearers of meaning and not the makers of meaning. Within the male gaze theory, There are 3 parts of the male gaze: Men looking at women Men tend to look at women s curves, this is the idea that men tend to look at other parts of a women s bodies and not their eyes. Which is why the camera in films also focus on other parts of the women s bodies. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal for the counselor is to show an understanding of the self harming behavior while conveying acceptance and validating the adolescents thoughts and actions (Choate, 2012). The counselor shows acceptance; however, the goal is to create change. Although the counselor balances acceptance and change, the counselor continually challenges the client to alter any negative behavior hindering one s life quality. Ultimately the thought is that acceptance and validation will facilitate self change while change will facilitate self acceptance. If the adolescent is reluctant to change the harmful behavior, the counselor may spend more sessions building trust and showing validation before attempting change. Additionally, a client may find it difficult to trust the counselor is the client believes the counselor will report NSSI episodes to the adolescents parents. A balance must be created between client trust, parental rights, and confidentiality. With a proper balance allowing the youth comfort, yet abiding by regulations, an adolescent will be able to build the relationship required to develop change (Choate, 2012). Assessments should be conducted during the initial interviews with the client. These initial evaluations are either conducted informally with an interview or formally with a structured interview and self report tool. The DBT model allows the counselor to integrate assessment results into four DBT target treatment areas. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An argument by culinary Luddites that is often thrown around is that our ancestors never had the access to these options and lived a much happier natural lifestyle. Rachel Laudan brought these points to the forefront to be critiqued in her writing In Praise of Fast Food. Rachel Laudan brings the argument that individuals have always participated in the consumption of convenience based foods, the goal in growing and producing food has always been to alter produce to make it more convenient as well as better tasting. Fast food is not as new of an invention as many believe it to be. Modern mainstream media outlets have pushed the belief that processing food has been the worst thing for the well being of the human body. Rachel Laudan makes some very solid points in the fast food debate that should be noted. It is commonly believed that fresh and natural is the correct dietary plan above all else. To start out, Rachel Laudan brings up the concept that going back to the way of our ancestors may not be what individuals need in the modern world. Rachel Laudan questions the idea that the people of the past lived a much healthier lifestyle than the current population finds acceptable by giving the reader mental imagery about how the people of the past truly were living and how undesirable that life was. Consequently, Rachel Laudan backs up her beliefs by arguing about the benefits of the healthy natural eating of the people of the past Natural was unreliable. Fresh milk soured; eggs went rotten. Everywhere seasons of plenty were followed by seasons of hunger. Natural was also usually indigestible. Grains, which supplied 50 to 90 percent of calories in most societies, have to be threshed ground, and cooked to make them edible (Faigley 271). Rachel Laudan seems to be arguing that life for the people of the past was not something to create a lifestyle around. • 29. Analysis Of Dirtwork In EuripidesThe Bacchae 3218 Dirtwork in Euripides The Bacchae The Bacchae represent the irrational aspects of religion, and this is neither simply reverent or irreverent toward religion. The play, The Bacchae can easily be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the dangers of neglecting worship or as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing too much trust in human rationality. If the play s main intent was to describe the dangers of neglecting worship or to describe the dangers of relying heavily of human rationality, then Bacchae would not be portrayed negatively. I will argue that these interpretations, while true to some degree, are oversimplifications of the message that Euripides conveys, and that a stronger interpretation is that the play is commentary on the human struggle to harmonize our desire to individuate and our desire to unify. The play describes the conflict between Pentheus need to define boundaries and the Bacchae s desire to eliminate boundaries. Pentheus and the Bacchae show what occurs when one desire overpowers the other. The conflict between Pentheus and the Bacchae is an external representation of the internal conflict between the two needs, that we observe in characters like Pentheus. The Bacchae represent an irrational aspect of religion because they are portrayed as victims of groupthink. The Bacchae do not think for themselves, and reject the idea of thinking for themselves. • 31. The Cultural Impact Of Globalization Global Progress In an age in which people, business, and organizations can communicate even while residing on different sides of the world, globalization has played a major role in the progress of today s global society. As globalization continues to extend its reach to different parts of the world in different ways, it is clear that it has left a positive mark on the world both culturally and economically while improving international relationships. One of the most prominent ways in which globalizationhas improved society is through cultural integration. As globalization increases, the spread of works, ideas, and beliefs from different cultures extends its reach to new parts of the world. As more people from different areas are able to become familiar with each others beliefs and cultures, people around the world become more accepting of integration. Therefore, as people migrate to different countries they are better able to become part of society without having to feel ostracized. Simultaneously, international relationships between different countries become stronger as there is more interaction between them. The practice of recruiting peasants into native armies was pioneered by Shuja ud daula, Nawab of Awadh, in 1764. Previously, the army of the Nawabs of Awadh had been composed of so called gentlemen troopers, cavalrymen which had formed a strong connection with the educated elite in Awadh.4 An alliance between the militaryforces and educated elite of Awadh worried Shuja, and he undertook to recruit peasants as infantrymen, mainly Hindus from the Rajput zamadaris of Awadh.5 It was hoped that by recruiting peasants, the power of the cavalrymen would eventually be greatly reduced or eliminated entirely. Icons are used in all religions to represent and commemorate religious figures and symbols that are held with great honor within the religion. Icons are used to represent some sacred personage, such as a saint or an angel or Christ (The Definition of Icons). Icons are typically written on wood and honored as sacred (Goldammer). Not only is the writing itself seen as sacred but the whole practice of creating these icons is a religious event. There are three main types of religious icons: portrait icons, group icons, and landscape icons referring the the objects in the writings. There are rules associated with iconography that have to be followed in order for the image to be viewed as an icon. Before the artist starts writing the icon, they are supposed to fast and pray so that they are in a clear, undisturbed state of mind. The artist needs to quiet one s spirit, which is done through the praying and fasting. The quieting one s spirit is a way to open up and let God in so he can do the work. The artist is instructed not to sign the writing as it is supposed to come from God therefore, there is no credit that needs to be given. Another rule is that icons are referred to as written instead of painted or drawn . Describing them as written emphasizes the important spiritual role that these icons possess. ... The Perception Of The Human Eye Introduction According to the dictionary, a sensation is the operation or function of the senses; perception or awareness of stimuli through the senses, while a perception is the act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending by means of thesenses or of the mind; cognition; understanding. The eye is defined as white membrane that contains an opening for light to get to the retina. The eye is developed in a way that it receives physical stimuli like light and send it to the brain as an electrical signal that is responsible for interpreting signals as images (Goldstein, Humphreys, Shiffrar, Yost, and Wiley, 2005). Among the animals, human vision is regarded as the most sophisticated. The three primary layers of the eye include choroid, retina, and cornea. Furthermore, the human eye is responsible for the complex color perception that is initiated and instigated by cones in the retina and complicated by the integrating impulse in the brain. The process of sight All the vision is based upon the perception of the electromagnetic rays. These beams then pass through cornea as light and get into the eye through the pupil. The pupil performs the function of a gatekeeper because it allows less or much light to enter to enable an individual to see an image clearly (Goldstein, 2010). Iris is the pigmented area, which is around the pupil, and it acts as a sphincter. In speech analysis, features of an observed segment of a signal with a period Ts=(5 100 ms) could fairly be stationary. • 50. Difference Between The Rich Get Rich And The Poor Get Poorer The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Essentially this is the view that Marx and Engels had on social economic status. There is a polarization of classes, in that there is a division of groups, the rich and the poor. However not much has changed today. The rich help the rich, and the poor in a sense also help the rich, but no one seems to care to help the poor. Even in times of natural catastrophes the poor undoubtedly suffer the most with little help from anyone. The state only helps the ruling class and protects big corporations. Even with decades of warning of the possible flooding that could happen from the after math of Hurricane Harvey, corporations chose to ignore all warnings and took no action to prepare if a natural disaster were to happen. Marx and Engels would see that their theories are still relevant today. There is still a social and economic inequality between classes. The poor and marginalized suffer the most. Marx and Engels propose that the class in control of the material production also controls the mental production The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time I ts ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking, the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it (Marx, 172). Those in the top class are in charge and ruling everyone else. They re the ones who have a say and the power over others. The corporations not only ignored the warnings for the flood they also fought against having to take any precautions in case the natural disaster did happen. The flood itself could not have been prevented, but the amount of damage and the people harmed could have been kept at a minimal. Marx stresses that the economic production, the base, is what shapes the prevailing ideas, the superstructure, and this economic structure is what drives society. Even though people often think the air around us is neutral, the atmosphere naturally contains acidic oxides of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur that can harm our environment greatly. Sulfur dioxide is produced when organic matter decomposes and forms hydrogen sulphide which then oxidises to the oxide: 2H2S (g) + 3O2 (g) 2SO2 (g) + 2H2O. The natural sources of sulfur dioxide are in volcanic gases, bushfires, sulfur rich geothermal hot springs releasing gases and the decomposition of organic matter. Biology Study Guide Biology Qs 2 (a) (i) A = HUMAN LIVER (ii) B = HUMAN RED BLOOD CELLS (iii) C = MOSQUITO INTESTINE (iv) D = MOSQUITO SALIVARY GLAND 2 (b) Adult flatworm releases egg: INSIDE HUMAN HOST Egg hatches to become miracidium larva: FREE LIVING IN FRESH WATER Miracidium larva becomes a cercaria larva: INSIDE SNAIL HOST Cercaria larva develops into an adult flatworm: INSIDE HUMAN HOST 2 (c) The plasmodium parasite would be most susceptible to human antibodies between the moment of initial infection and the arrival of the larvae in the liver, as it travels through the bloodstream in the form of sporozytes. Here the parasite is fully exposed, not ensconced in liver cells or red blood cells as during later phases of its development. Though the lower numbers of parasites at this stage would trigger less of an antibody response, this lower plasmodium population would also be more effectively countered by the human body s natural defenses. 2 (d) i. 1. Multiple or even hermaphroditic reproductive organs to increase reproductive chances 2. Morphological flattening to ease remaining on/travelling in a host organism ii. Plasmodium: 1. The ability to seek out the human liver, which might provide essential fatty acids the plasmodium parasite cannot produce on its own, is one important adaptation of this organism. 2. The sporozyte phase of the plasmodium life cycle, which provides a great deal of morphological (i.e. directly physical and not necessarily chemical) protection for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
