Can you imagine being able to light your tap water on fire? Water is a critical
source used in all areas to support our ways of life. The use of water ranges from
basic household need to creating energy. Water is essential for all living things to
survive, yet we have companies polluting it. Fracking is causing water pollution for
underground and groundwater, both surface water and aquifer water.
So what is fracking? According to Manuel, fracking is a procedure used in extraction
of natural gas and oil, which may pollute both ground and surface water. The
procedure consists of fluids being injected into the bore hole and causes cracks in
the formation rocks (Gordalla). During the drilling process, the injection of more
than one million gallons of water, sand, and chemicals at a high pressure into
horizontally drilled wells as far as 10,000 feet below the surface ground. The
pressurized mixtures causes the rock layer to crack. These cracks are called
fissures. The fissures are held open by the sand particles so that the natural gas from
the shale can flow up the well (Manuel). Fracking contains chemicals designed to
increase flow rates, dissolve sediments, kill bacteria, control temperatures, or prevent

The most important theme in this book is Alienation, or isolating himself from the
society to protect himself. Life has been harsh with Holden, and Holden feels
Trapped on the other side Isolating himself in a way makes him believe that he is
better than everybody else, and also to show that he is no phony, that he is unique.
Because of this isolation, he never has this human love or human interaction. All his
problems are kept to him, and he uses nobody to talk to and let them out. He never
tries to get to the root of his problems and work them out, but instead he isolates

Even though me and my grandpa are over one thousand miles apart, we keep a good
relationship. Every week we call each other and our conversations are just as good as
if he were right there. Me and my grandpa have always been close. My grandpa who
I like to call Poppy is one of the best people I have in my life. Me and him treasure
the time we have together. We love to cook and basically do everything we can
together whenever possible. He is in my life just as much as any other member of

According to the Shaper, Grendel was the dark side...in effect. The terrible race God
cursed (51). From his very upbringing, Grendel was cursed, set apart from the rest of
nature. This isolation became evident throughout the novel as it seemed both humans
and nature were against him. In the novel Grendel by John Gardner, the theme of
nature fighting what is unnatural is supported by the motifs of animals, snakes, and
trees. The prevalence of nature s clash with that which is unnatural is evident in the
reoccurring images of animals throughout the novel. Gardner emphasizes nature s
resistance to Grendel as [a bull] snorted through this nose and pawed more deeply,
spattering grass and black earth at his sharp rear hooves...I watched him loll his

Sacajawea is a well known American Indian woman. Her expedition with explorers
Lewis and Clark was extraordinary. She was born in Tendoy, Idaho around 1788. She
was a member of the Lemhi Shoshone tribe. At this time, the American territory
ended at the Mississippi River. One year after the Louisiana Purchase, President
Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on an expedition that left from St. Louis,
Missouri, traveling through the US Northwest, to the Pacific Ocean (History).
Children in the Shoshone tribe were valued and seen as important members of the
tribe. The children were educated and thought to become great individuals on day.
In 1800, Sacajawea along with other Shoshone women were kidnapped by the
Hidatsa tribe. Sacajawea and the other women were hauled from the Shoshone
tribe in present day Idaho to the Hidatsa tribe in present day North Dakota. It was
when she reached the Hidatsa village when Sacajawea was sold to a fur trader
named Toussaint Charbonneau as a slave. It wasn t until later when Sacajawea

In the October of 2015, oil prices have dropped to their lowest since 2008 and
Canada has lost over 35,000 jobs, and the value of the loonie has dropped to a mere
77 cents compared to the U.S. Dollar. As Canada desperately clings onto the failing
economy, it turns its attention to The Keystone Pipelines. The Keystone XL (KXL)
pipeline was an idea proposed in 2008 by the TransCanada energy company, to
deliver 830,000 barrels of oil each day beginning in Hardisty, Alberta, and extending
south to Steele City, Nebraska. TransCanada claims to bring more jobs, energy
security, and benefit to the Canadian and American economy. Yet, President Obama
denied the proposal in 2015. Although it was a huge disappointment to Canada, the
decision to deny permission for further construction of the pipeline was the right one.
