WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)
 Born at Stratford –upon-Avon as the son of
John Shakespeare and Mary Arden.
 He is often called England’s national poet and
the “Bard of Avon”.
 Shakespeare was probably educated at the
King’s New School in Stratford, a grammar
school
 House in which Shakespeare born
 In 1582 at the age of 18 he married Anne
Hathaway his senior by eight years.
 He fled the town for London in order to
escape punishment for deer poaching
in king’s forest.
 In London he got involved in the Elizabethan
theatre, starting from the very bottom of the
and climbing up step by step to actor, dramatist
and finally shareholder in Lord Chamberlain’s
Men.
 Shakespeare’s career as dramatist was
within
the period of Renaissance in Britain.
 His early plays were histories and
comedies.
 The whole sweep of English history from the
days of Richard 2nd to the times of Henry
7th
was condensed into four play sequences.
 The first sequence consisting of the three
parts
 The second sequence deals with the history of
England in the days before Henry 6th.
 These plays are Richard 1st, Henry4 part 1 and
2 and Henry 5th.
 Shakespeare’s comedies were festive comedies
which represented a vigorous and energetic
society.
