William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He married Anne Hathaway at age 18 and had three children, but also fled to London where he began his career in theater. Shakespeare wrote comedies, histories, tragedies and sonnets over his career. Some of his most famous plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. He was a shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain's Men theatrical company and helped establish the Globe Theatre in London. Shakespeare died in 1616 and is considered one of the greatest English writers in history.
