6. What Is College?
College is any educational program beyond high school. It
includes:
Trade Schools (Beauty Schools, some Industrial Programs.
Offer diplomas)
Community Colleges (2-year programs that offer diplomas,
certificates and associates degrees.)
4-year Colleges (bachelor degree)
Universities (bachelor, Master and Doctoral programs.
Whichever post-secondary school is right for you, prepare
yourself now. Most jobs you are preparing for will require
education beyond high school.
7. Resources Are Available to ALL Students:
Regardless of financial circumstances, all
students have options to afford college:
Scholarships (money provided by the college or other organizations to help students pay for
tuition, housing and board. Does not need to be paid back).
Most scholarships are competitive and based on academic achievements-but not all. School activities,
community activities and other criteria maybe required as well.
State of Nebraska offers the Susan Buffet Scholarship to students with financial need that have a 2.5
GPA. The scholarship renews every year for up to five years at a four-year college or up to three
years at a two-year college; OR until graduation with a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first. It is
a competitive scholarship that requires and essay and letters of recommendation. This scholarship
will pay up to $8,000 a year for students to attend college. Several JCC students have been
recipients.
Regents Scholarships: A competitive scholarship available to students that have at least a 30 on the
ACT and rank in the top 25 percent of their graduating class. The University of Nebraska system also
offers a Regents Scholarship to residents of Nebraska. It is given to outstanding students who are
incoming freshmen and covers all tuition and fees for up to 135 credit hours or the completion of a
bachelor’s degree.
8. The Money Is There…Prepare Yourself to
Earn It.
Grants (money provided to students based on financial need from the state or
government. Does not need to be paid back.)
Nebraska Opportunity Grant (NOG) is a grant available to Nebraska residents who have
financial need. It provides tuition assistance to in-state colleges.
Nebraska Pell Grant: designed for low-income undergraduate students. The grant
amount depends on several factors including the student’s financial need, the cost of
education and status as either a part-time or full-time student. The maximum grant
amount is $5,550.
College Bound Nebraska Tuition Assistance Program: Students who are Nebraska
residents and are eligible for the Pell Grant can receive financial aid assistance
that will cover all remaining costs of tuition at a university within the University
of Nebraska system. This includes those enrolled at the University of Nebraska-
Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Nebraska-Kearney and the
University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Loans (money students may borrow at a reduced interest rate to pay for college
expenses. Does need to be paid back to institution providing the loan.)
